• Taste of Downtown, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.: The Taste of Downtown is one of downtown Kamloops’ most popular events.

Many city centre restaurants serve up samples, available to customers who have purchased a special passport helping guide them to each location they want to try.

A series of coincidences are what led Eden Cheung to street theatre.

“How does anybody get into anything?” said the stunt artist/magician, who will bring his act to the Merchants’ Market Friday.

“It’s a combination of stuff for me. I had an interest in street performing.

“There’s a big festival in Edmonton, where I grew up. I remember being there when I was 14 and thought it was just the coolest thing.

“There’s a bit of freedom that speaks to me.”

Cheung now resides in Vancouver and has been performing full time for nine years — the same length of time it took him to perfect the stunt he will bring to Kamloops this week.

The finale, Cheung said, will feature him breaking a cigarette in half with a whip

while balancing a top a ladder nine feet in the air.

He’s been performing the act for three years, but creating it took at least five years of practise — and the idea came to him long before that.

But is a good trick the key to keeping street audiences entertained?

“I think that’s the big secret, isn’t it?” Cheung said.

“I know some very talented circus artists and talented musicians who show up thinking it’s going to be easy and then they realize nobody wants to sit around and listen to them play or watch them perform.”

For Cheung, the “psychology of crowds” plays a big part — knowing what to say, how to present a professional act and

how to adapt when an interruption steers the show off the rails.

“To me, the beauty of street theatre is that everything is different every time,” Cheung said.

“Once you have your show figured out and you know what works. . . you have to be able to come off the rails and then catch back up to where the show is supposed to be.”

Cheung said many entertainers use street performing as a platform to bigger and better things — stage shows, Cirque du Soleil-type aspirations.

“But for me, this is kind of all I’ve ever — this is the top for me,” he said.

“I love it.”

Although Gray lives in Kamloops, he doesn’t often get the opportunity to perform in his hometown, spending much of his year on the road entertaining at conventions, conferences and trade shows.

“It will be nice to sleep in my own bed after this gig,” he said.

Gray has been

performing for 25 years, getting his start in comedy clubs at just 12 years old.

His act includes up-close and personal mini-shows reminiscent of the old-time carnival barker, he said.

At Gray’s Magic Tent, audiences will witness magic, feats of danger, mind-reading and a demonstration of the three shell game.

performing several of his routines for more than 20 years.

Those include his cowboy card act — described as Western-theme magic with rope, cards and a cowboy boot — and the regurgitated balloon poodle, which is exactly what it sounds

like, he said.

“My act is constantly morphing into different manifestations of comedy, music, magic, sight gags, stunts, audience participation and special effects,” Gray said.

“I might learn a new bit in an afternoon, but it might take a year or

more before it blossoms into a great routine and finds its perfect place in the show.”
