Court documents are shedding new light on a daylight shooting that shut down traffic on Saturday near the campus of Thompson Rivers University. Derek John Muirhead is facing charges of attempted murder, discharging a firearm, possessing a firearm while prohibited, assault with a weapon and a raft of other weapons-related offences, including possession of a prohibited firearm with ammunition, a conviction for which carries a mandatory three-year prison sentence. The charges stem from an incident in the 700-block of McGill Road just after 11 a.m. on DEREK MUIRHEAD Saturday. The 29-year-old is in custody and will return to Kamloops provincial court tomorrow. The court documents identify Michael Boyer as the victim of the shooting, but the extent of his injuries have not been made public. The documents allege Muirhead “with intent to endanger the life of Michael Boyer did discharge a pistol at Michael Boyer.” The pistol is identified in the documents as a Ruger 9-mm.
