Now the planning begins According to The Knot 2015 Real Weddings Study, the average American wedding cost $32,641 last year, excluding honeymoon expenses. That’s an increase of more than $1,400 from the year prior.

Couples did not figure to fare much better in Canada when tying the knot in 2015. According to the Annual Reader Survey from the Canada-based online wedding resource Weddingbells, couples expected to pay slightly less than $31,000 for their weddings.

But with a little ingenuity and a hands-on approach, couples can have a wedding that is inexpensive and memorable at the same time. Prompt planning can go a long way.

Making all of the components of a wedding come together seemlessly requires a well-organized bride and groom and the cooperation of professional wedding vendors who understand their unique roles.

Vendors, including florists, transportation companies, musicians and dressmakers are essential to a successful wedding. Competent wedding vendors will remove much of the worry and work from a couple’s shoulders.

Research, planning and verifying references are some ways to ensure your vendors make your wedding day that much more enjoyable.

• Word-of-mouth advertisement is a great way to find quality wedding vendors who will help make your dream wedding a reality. Seek recommendations from trusted friends and family members. If you attend a wedding and find the flowers or the music particularly well done, ask for the name of the florist or band.

• If budget allows, work with a wedding planner. They will have an extensive list of wedding vendors you can contact. A wedding planner wants the job to get done right and efficiently, and many wedding planners have already vetted and verified certain vendors as quality workers.

• Always ask for references and don’t ignore them. Talk with couples who used the vendors’ services in the past and ask the questions that are most important to your decision-making process. If a vendor fails to provide references, this should raise suspicions about the person’s reliability.

• Deposits should be a fraction of the total price. Avoid wedding vendors who insist on hefty deposits. A deposit is a good-faith agreement to hold the date of the wedding, and it should be a small percentage of the overall cost of the services.

• Do not pay balances too far in advance. Good vendors realize couples will not want to pay the tally until they have received the products or services they signed up for. The exception may be a caterer or reception site that needs the funds to order food and beverages a few weeks in advance.

• Contracts are your friends. Every agreement should be in writing. You have a better chance of fighting for a refund or restitution in court when you have a contract in writing.

Shabby chic, elegant themes lead wedding trends in 2016 It’s out with the old and in with the new this year.

Rustic or vintage wedding themes are on the outs and classic elegance is in, said Candace Reid, owner of First Comes Love Gowns & Events.

Lately gold tones and blush are on trend and wedding decor incorporates the use of different textures. Shades of champagne, nude, dove grey and copper, white flowers and classic linens are also popular choices in recent years.

Canadian magazine Weddingbells highlighted powder pink and blue as colours of the year. Hand-lettering and modern calligraphy are being incorporated as often as possible. For something a little outside the box, mid-century modern decor is experiencing a resurgence, says the magazine.

Do-it-yourself selfie stations with personalized backdrops and wedding hashtags continue to be a popular trend. Reid said photo booths are a hot rental item, available through First Comes Love.

Games for the bride and groom are still incorporated, but games for guests are another feature couples are choosing to include.

In order to secure desired vendors, couples should start planning a year in advance.

Couples should allow ample time to peruse venues in order to book their preferred location, especially if they plan to wed during the high season from July to September. In Kamloops, Colombo Lodge and Quaaout Lodge are popular wedding venues, Reid said.

Brides can order gowns, at the latest, nine months in advance, she added. Any later, there is a chance the dress will not be ready in time.

Lace wedding gowns have been trending for a few years and remain a popular choice among brides. Any style with a low, open back or cutouts are on trend, Reid said.

Coloured wedding dresses or underlays, possibly in blush, are also in style. According to Weddingbells, short wedding dresses are a trend amongst major designers in 2016 for a non-traditional choice.

Decor-wise, Chiavari chairs are replacing traditionally covered banquet chairs, Reid said. They are just one of the many items available to rent through First Comes Love, which has a full inventory of classic bridal decor, from ceiling drapery to centerpieces to linens and backdrops.

Most event-planning companies will take care of set up and take down. Reid said brides are most interested in those services, as they don’t want to worry about those laborious, tedious tasks on the morning of their big day.

However, planners will take care of as much or as little as needed. From the decor to the food, they have the resources to plan the entire day. They can help find the perfect venue, caterer, photographer and much more.

Staff can also be on hand the day of the wedding to make sure everything is taken care of and things run smoothly.

Finding the perfect wedding photographer can be easy breezy if you follow a few simple guidelines.

Listen to your friends’ and family’s recommendations for a photographer, but remember that, ultimately, you should choose someone whose photos resonate with you and, more importantly, who you feel comfortable with.

If you fall in love with someone’s work and they aren’t available for your wedding date, consider rearranging your date.

Remember, your memories will fade, but amazing photos will keep them alive forever, so if you want that amazing photographer who takes ridiculously awesome photos, rearrange and make it happen.

Trust me, if you rearrange your date to book a photographer who you love, that photographer is going to go many extra miles to make your wedding pictures the best pictures ever.

Nothing makes us feel more flattered than when people really love us and our work.

Also, think about your overall budget and don’t put a cap on your photography budget until you meet with some photographers.

People often walk away from the shooter of their dreams because they believe they can’t afford it when it’s actually easy to rearrange priorities in your budget

Meet with photographers in person, or through Skype or FaceTime, before you choose one. Personality is everything. Imagine hiring a photographer for an entire day, never speaking to them beforehand then finding out your personalities clash and you’re stuck with them all day? Ouch!

Lastly, once you decide to hire someone, make sure they have a valid business license, liability insurance and a good contract that covers both sides — should anything go wrong — and outlines exactly what is expected of both parties. Peace of mind goes a long way toward making your big day the best it can be.
