Thompson Rivers University is taking steps to establish an engineering program that would allow students to graduate here and become eligible for a professional designation, rather than being forced to transfer to another university.

Tom Dickinson, the university’s dean of science, said while plans remain in the early stages, he is confident an engineering program in software, electrical and computer engineering could start within three years.

“We’ve been working for about a year to make it happen,” he said.

“In September, we really started ramping it up.”

Four years ago, university president Alan Shaver said publicly he was interested in creating an engineering school at TRU. The university has traditionally been home to a first-year transfer program that allows students to take a single year at the McGill Road campus before transferring to a degreegranting program at UBC, SFU or UVic. Last year, it extended it to allow some students to take two years at TRU before transferring to the UVic. That second-year program allowed the university to hire several professional engineers to teach, an increase in capacity that can be

used toward the four-year degree-granting program.

If it happens, it would be the most significant development at TRU since its law school opened in 2011.

The major difference, however, is law students pay the full cost of their education, currently more than $18,000 a year.

The engineering program is proposed to fall in line with other undergraduate programs at the university, thus requiring $3.8 million a year from the B.C. Liberal government to subsidize the cost.

That equals nearly $14,000 a year for each student.

Dickinson said university administrators have met MLAs and officials within the provincial government to begin lobbying for the funding.

“I can say [Health Minister and KamloopsNorth Thompson MLA] Terry Lake and I have had a series of conversations with the minister, Andrew Wilkinson, and impressed on him the importance of this program for Kamloops and British Columbia,” said Kamloops-South Thompson MLA Todd Stone, who is also the province’s transportation minister.

“My understanding is it’s making its way through the ministry,” Stone said. “I’ll continue to advocate for it.”

Stone, a technology entrepreneur before joining the legislature in 2013, said he has

seen firsthand the shortage of engineers in the Interior.

In the past 30 years, an estimated 500 students have transferred out of the first-year program at TRU. “Very few of them have come back,” Stone said.

A labour report released last year recommended establishment of a full engineering program in Kamloops due to current and forecast shortages of the occupation.

Danny Rink is the entrepreneur on an advisory committee to the program.

The chief operating officer of iTel Networks Inc. said there is a growing technology sector in Kamloops that needs engineers in computing, software and electrical.

“The program is of interest to us because it’s around software and electrical engineering, which Kamloops has a huge need for . . .

Finding talent is a real struggle,” he said.

In addition to lobbying for funding, the university will continue to design its program in consultation with other universities and professional engineering representatives.

Dickinson said an advantage, in addition to the entry program already in place, is the existence of a computer-science degree, as well as expertise in the trades and technology program.

Both of those will dovetail with an engineering degree program, he said.

While not as intense as last summer, this year's road construction season will include a number of major road construction projects, several of which will get started over the next few months.

KGHM Ajax gets more time to answer questions ANDREA KLASSEN

KGHM Ajax will receive more time to respond to public comments and questions about its environmental application for its proposed copper and gold mine south of Kamloops.

The B.C. Environmental Assessment Office (BCEAO) said Wednesday it will pause its 180-day review of the mine’s impacts at day 107. The BCEAO has not set a deadline by which the mining company must respond to public submissions.

“The timeline suspension will remain in place pending completion of required deliverables,” a Ministry of Environment spokesman said.

Review of KGHM Ajax’s environmental assessment will continue during the pause, while the BCEAO’s working group of First

Nations, city and government representatives will continue to meet.

Earlier this week, KGHM announced it was asking for more time to answer more than 2,000 public submissions, citing time spent at an ongoing First Nations-led panel review at the Tk’emlups Indian Band as one reason for the delay.

Kamloops city council announced Tuesday it will also postpone its final deliberations on Ajax until the company responds to more than 800 questions from the city reviewer, SLR Consulting.

KGHM Ajax spokesman Robert Koopmans said many of the community comments forwarded by the BCEAO require multipart responses, noting a comment from SLR Consulting contained 800 questions.

The company is also responding to comments from the BCEAO’s technical

working group, as well as about 353 comments submitted by the Tk’emlups and Skeetchestn Indian bands.

Koopmans said KGHM has answered about 70 per cent of the technical working group’s questions so far.

“In the coming days, the company will work with the BC Environmental Assessment Office to establish new timelines for submission of integrated answers to all the questions and comments received from the wide range of stakeholders, working group members and the public,” Koopmans said.

In a letter to the company dated April 26, project assessment manager Tracy James said the BCEAO is not asking KGHM to prepare memos in response to public submissions related to aboriginal rights and title or the regulatory process surrounding

the mine.

As part of its response, however, KGHM must write memos that summarize other issues identified by the public, with a response for each topic area — such as air quality or economics.

James said each individual memo should include: • plain-language summaries of each of the key issues raised within that topic area; • Ajax’s responses to each of these issues, providing specific references to where the issue is discussed in the application and, if any aspect of the comment is not covered in the application, clarifying how the issue raised has or will be addressed through the EA or subsequent permitting processes; • where necessary, a clear description of how the memo topic may relate to other memos; and • appendices containing all public comments

“Everyone seems to have a

different take on it,” she said.

“What you said today is not what I heard, but you could be speaking to a different group of people.”

Kurzak said council should support the proposed mine if it can be operated safely, arguing it will provide well-paying jobs.

“We are a resource town,” Kurzak said. “We were from the start and continue to be today.”

From bad to worse: slashed, then jailed He was found on the street after midnight, suffering a slash wound to his face.

A few hours later, he was booked into Kamloops RCMP cells.

Cpl. Jodie Shelkie said Mounties were called to the area of 12th Street on the North Shore at 12:15 a.m. yesterday, where they found a 30-year-old man with a three- to four-inch slash wound across his cheek.

“The man was unco-operative with police and declined to say how he had received his

community so far, and its plans for future consultation if the mine is approved.

“EAO acknowledges that we received a large

injury,” Shelkie said.

The man was taken to Royal Inland Hospital to receive stitches and released.

Unrelated to this event, Shelkie said, it was found the slashing victim had a warrant for his arrest.

After being released from RIH, he was arrested for failing to comply with conditions and held in custody.

The collaborative was created to get all providers working together and to ensure physicians are aware of the wealth of programs to which they can refer patients.

t one time, agencies and professionals who work in the child and youth mental-health field didn’t interact much with each other.

That’s changed in recent years, said Jocelyn Campbell, a counsellor who works in the field.

However, it doesn’t mean there’s an awareness of the many services being provided, so Campbell and many others hopped aboard a bus this week for a tour in recognition of National Child and Youth Mental Health Week, which ends on Sunday.

for treatment, stuck in emergency rooms that simply added to their stress.

Their situations were too often being discussed by ER doc-

The tour bus drove by another 23 agency locations, with information shared about each.

At the John Tod site, the group split into two, each touring one side of the shared facility.

Janis Arner, director of family services for the Y, took her group through, explaining the many services offered, from speech to Mother Goose to childminding.

That service has been particularly helpful, Arner said, because parents with children are more likely to access services if there is some qualified child care they can also use.

At the youth shelter, Nicole Arnold and Krista Gallant talked about the resources available there.

The shelter is a relatively new venture and many in the group had questions about it.

Sze said the format she and her colleagues in the field created for the Thompson region in 2013 has spread to 63 other

Among the goals were to provide rapid continuous quality health-care, timely access to integrated services and supports.

Sze said another goal is to provide “a warm handover” to the adult mental-health system when youth turn 19, “so people are not lost.”

More than 2,000 people — from youth to parents to the RCMP to clinicians — are now involved in some way with the collaborative.

HOT: Canadian nerdiness as the long-form census made its return this week.

Axed under the Conservatives in 2010, the national survey is back under the new Liberal government — and its arrival was heralded by an impressive social-media celebration.

About 15-million households will receive the census in the mail, with about 25 per cent getting the long-form document.

How do we know Canadians are data geeks? The website where the census can be completed online crashed due to overwhelming demand.

A robust census is essential in planning in every area of the country when it comes to education, health care, housing and all matter of infrastructure. The return of the long-form census is a good idea.

I

f Hollywood North is ever ready to make a major motion picture about the behind-the-scenes political action on this province’s mining industry, Bill Murray should be cast as the lead.

They can call it Groundhog Day 2 based on the fact a report from the auditor general this week slamming the provincial government for poor compliance and enforcement measures in the industry sounds like a familiar echo of a report released five years ago by the same office.

The name of today’s auditor general is Carol Bellringer. The name of the auditor general in 2011 was John Doyle.

They both found the B.C. Liberal government and the salient departments and ministries it oversees — in July 2011 under Premier Christy Clark and Mines Minister Rich Coleman and today under Clark and Mines Minister Bill Bennett — to be seriously neglectful when it comes to ensuring mining operations are complying with the rules and woefully inadequate when it comes to enforcing said rules.

Here is what Bellringer had to say in her audit of compliance and enforcement in the mining sector, released this week: “We concluded that the Ministry of Energy and Mines’ compliance and enforcement activities of the mining sector are inadequate to protect the province from significant environmental risks.

“We found almost every one of our expectations for a robust compliance and enforcement program within the MEM

MUSINGS (Ministry of Energy and Mines) and the MoE (Ministry of Environment) were not met. We found major gaps in resources, planning and tools,” Bellringer wrote.

“As a result, monitoring and inspections of mines were inadequate to ensure mine operators complied with requirements. The ministries have not publicly disclosed the limitations with their compliance and enforcement programs, increasing environmental risks and government’s ability to protect the environment.”

Here’s what Doyle wrote five years ago in his report on the B.C. Environmental Assessment Office (BCEAO): “Adequate monitoring and enforcement of certified projects is not occurring and follow-up evaluations are not being conducted.

We also found that information currently being provided to the public is not sufficient to ensure accountability.

“When an environmental assessment certificate is issued, the conditions and commitments surrounding its issue should be

measurable and enforceable so staff can monitor the project for compliance with the certificate conditions.

“Because this does not happen consistently, the Environmental Assessment Office cannot assure British Columbians that the conditions and commitments stated in the environmental assessment certificate are being met.”

Doyle’s report of 2011 included several recommendations and a vow by the BCEAO to improve, including a decision to appoint a director of strategy and quality assurance to improve oversight.

Bellringer’s report of this week included several recommendations and vow by the Ministry of Energy and Mines to appoint a new deputy chief inspector of mines for compliance and enforcement to oversee and implement improved compliance and enforcement.

Audits are done on a regular basis, with the purpose to improve whatever it is being audited.

In these cases, two audits a half-decade apart were nothing less than scathing.

And they are naturally a hotter topic in these parts in the wake of the Mt. Polley mine tailings-pond disaster and the ongoing controversy concerning the proposed Ajax mine south of the city.

Based on history seemingly repeating itself, the public should be rightfully concerned that yet another damning mining-related audit could be arriving circa 2021, with similar criticisms, recommendations and pledges to do better. editor@kamloopsthisweek.com

I was coming into town and felt my car shaking.

I stopped and discovered three of five wheel nuts only finger tight.

A really nice young fellow stopped and helped me out.

I hope something really good happens to this guy, He deserves it because he was genuinely nice. I wish I had his name. He was driving a white truck with a company logo on the door (which I didn’t get).

Editor: I can’t thank Volkswagen Kamloops enough for the amazing service I received.

I moved from Edmonton about a year ago and needed a new vehicle.

Typically, I know a friend or family member that I’ve trusted selling a vehicle and have never been to a dealership as I’ve heard negative stories.

Since I didn’t really know anyone in town, I found looking for a reliable vehicle daunting.

A new friend mentioned VW would be a great place for a naïve and gull-

ible person like myself to receive honest and reliable information, so I nervously checked it out.

who I met briefly as he overheard my little story and introduced himself.

He took the time to speak with me on a genuine level and had me go on a few test drives with his hilarious and knowledgeable son, Mike.

I was in and out with a vehicle that I can afford and love to drive.

I recommend anyone looking for a new or used vehicle to check VW first, especially if you’re worried about getting hosed.

And, if that dust comes from the Mission Flats area, how will anything coming from Ajax be expected to make the necessary turn to come from the south instead of from the west?

On another note, I see Coun. Donovan Cavers has appointed himself an expert realtor. That’s a neat trick since realtors I know had to take training on the subject — and most of them can hardly be called expert. Did Cavers forget some mine workers might like a short commute to work?

It all started with an email.

Mary Jordan had an idea, inspired by something she had discovered, and wanted to share it with other friends.

The Rarebirds housing cooperative was getting ready to fly.

Two years later, the residents of the West Battle Street home opened it to people who helped the idea become reality as they celebrated two years of communal living in the three-storey building.

Jordan, a retired counsellor, sent her email to many of her friends and a few of them responded with interest in developing the co-op.

There were some side flights as the project progressed, Jordan said, as the group first wanted to find an existing home and renovate it, a plan more in keeping with their goal of sustainability.

There were too many problems, she said, from unknown renovation surprises that might lurk to who would get the larger bedroom and who would be relegated to smaller ones — and how that worked with the goal of sharing the house equally.

In the end, the group decided to build what became a threestorey, 4,000-square-foot home overlooking Guerin Creek.

The group shares most of the

living space — each individual or couple has their own spacious bedroom — and all of the costs of running the house.

There’s room for 12 people if each of the bedrooms houses a couple, said Dan Hines, who lives there with his wife Robyn. Right now, there are seven residents.

With large windows on the north and east sides of the structure, the views are impressive, although there’s been an issue with flickers flying at the house, trying to peck their way into the structure. In the centre is what could be an elevator shaft should the need for accessibility become a priority.

For now, the shaft has been converted into three storage areas.

Twenty-seven solar panels provide electricity — up to seven kilowatts at their peak performance, enough to not only power the home, but to sell excess back to BC Hydro.

Hines said the panels are so efficient that their heating costs are nil. Three panels on the garage heat the 120-gallon hot-water system, which has two 80-gallon electric-powered tanks as seldomused backups.

Hines said the downtown location was chosen because of its proximity to public transit, the Kamloops Farmers’ Market and stores in the core area.

people, said Sandi Ceccon, a group committed to sustainability, protecting the environment and finding ways to efficiently house people.

They take turns preparing dinners, while making their own breakfasts and lunches. They share the open common area, but have about 400 square feet of space to call their own.

There are always projects on the go as the house develops, Hines said. Right now, the group is discussing what to do with the front yard space and whether to add a deck to the backyard.

Plots are being prepared for vegetable gardens. There’s a large cold room in the basement where canned goods and other foods are stored.

During the tour, there was discussion of other similar projects that might come to fruition. There are a couple of ideas being discussed in the Interior and the proponents have looked to Rarebirds for inspiration.

Part of that is because of the concept of sharing one big house.

Hines said a recent visit to the Lower Mainland included a stop at a new co-op housing unit that is essentially 31 separate units around a central green space.

“That’s one way of doing it,” he said. “But we like this one.”

Dandelions (from the French phrase dent-de-lion, which means lion’s tooth) are edible — and can be turned into wine.

Don’t blame bylaw for dandelions lions in several city parks from Dallas to downtown.

Hoffman said a few of those calls come into the city every year as well, but have started sooner because of the early warm weather in 2016.

“Like any perennial, they have a time of year where they’re flowering and there’s a big flush of them that come out,” she said.

“And they’re still there for the rest of the year, but the big flush of flowering that everybody sees and the little puffball cotton seed-heads for the most part aren’t as noticeable the rest of the year.”

While Kamloops city council passed a law last year banning the use of cosmetic pesticides on residential properties and restricting the city’s pesticide use, Hoffman said the prohibition hasn’t had an effect on parks operations yet.

What little spraying does occur wouldn’t take place until June.

The ban makes it illegal to spray shrubs, flowers and grass, but doesn’t

If you are noticing dandelions in some Kamloops parks, it is not the result of the city’s new pesticide bylaw.

Karla Hoffman, integrated pest management co-ordinator for the city, said it’s been years since parks workers sprayed or otherwise went after the yellow flowers in parks.

At the direction of city council after it passed its cosmetic-pesticide bylaw, only sports fields are now sprayed with pesticides — and even then, Hoffman said, it’s a last resort.

“For the most part, it’s just we have a high tolerance [for weeds] for those areas, for a lot of reasons,” she said.

“There’s a lot of concerns about having pesticides around a spot where children are playing. There really hasn’t been much call to do a pesticide application in those areas.”

impact fruit trees, vegetable gardens or hard surfaces like driveways.

Nor does it affect the city’s sports fields or commercial properties.

Hoffman said rather than spray weeds, the city focuses on watering and cutting its grass in ways that promote a stronger root base, helping it elbow out dandelions.

She said if homeowners are concerned about dandelion seeds landing in their grass, they can try using a natural product like corn gluten meal on their lawns.

“When the dandelion seeds are out there, if they put that kind of alternative pesticide down, it prevents those seeds from germinating,” Hoffman said, though she cautions it can also prevent grass seeds from rooting as well if a homeowner is trying to fill in bald spots at the same time.

The city also plans in May to release information to help residents care for their yards without pesticides, Hoffman said.

f Massimo Rizzo was a touch late for class at Burnaby Central secondary yesterday morning, give the kid a break.

“I was in the kitchen and we were almost going to be late for school and I told my sister, ‘I just want to keep watching,’ said Rizzo, picked 15th overall by the Kamloops Blazers at yesterday’s WHL Bantam Draft, which began at 7:30 a.m.

“My mom was stressing out at work. My dad and sister were in the kitchen with me. Then my

name got called. We were all just so happy. We were all celebrating.

“Then I left for school right away.”

The 15th overall pick was actually the 14th overall pick, as the Portland Winterhawks were once again forced to forfeit their first-round selection (ninth overall) for violating player-benefit rules in 2012.

For the second straight year, the Blazers used their first pick to take a forward.

Rizzo, 5-foot-10 and 165 pounds, is highly skilled, has great hands and an ability to light the lamp. He darted up Kamloops’ draft board with heroics at the bantam AAA Western Canadian Championship in Okotoks in April.

With 2:36 remaining in the third period, Rizzo scored his second goal of the game, a scintillating short-handed marker that lifted BWC to a 3-2 victory over the Rocky Mountain Raiders in the gold-medal game.

“That just really put it over the top for us, seeing him at the Westerns elevate his game to another level,” Recchi said. “He was the leader of his team, in terms of points, and the bigger the game, the bigger he played.

That’s what we like.”

When it was time for the Blazers to pick in Round 2, the best remaining player on their draft board was also a forward, so they took him.

If there’s a time for the Thompson Rivers WolfPack to go on a run, this weekend is it.

The Pack will play their final regular-season contests on Saturday and Sunday in Kelowna to face the Okanagan College Coyotes and the Vancouver Island Baseball Institute Mariners in Canadian College Baseball Conference action.

Not only is the weekend in Kelowna important from a practical standpoint — the Wolves can finish as high as second place, playing their last four games on the very field the CCBC Championship will take place — but also in terms of the mindset the Kamloops club will have entering the playoffs.

“It’s huge for us — we want to be going into the championship, going into Thursday on a high note,” manager Ray Chadwick told KTW. “To win four games on a weekend would be a really high note for us because we haven’t done it all year.”

The WolfPack have been mired by inconsistency in 2016.

The club climbed as high as three games above .500 near the midseason mark, but quickly fell back to even.

spring, splitting four of its six weekends. Only once has the club won a four-game series which, for catcher Evan Douglas, had been the norm throughout his four-year career.

“Really, probably inconsistency with pitching and defence and sometimes the bats not being awake — that’s pretty much it,” Douglas said, asked what has been holding the Wolves back.

“Hopefully, now, we can put it all together.”

In Calgary last weekend, Thompson Rivers had perhaps its best opportunity to sweep a weekend, taking on the Coyotes, whom the Wolves have dominated this season, and the leagueworst Calgary Dinos.

But the Dinos won the first two games of the weekend, putting Thompson Rivers in a hole.

The Pack came back even with wins against Okanagan College to salvage the series.

“We put ourselves in a situation where we could have easily done it, with a hit here or a play here. It was disappointing,” Chadwick said.

“We had a couple of bad breaks and twice we didn’t execute with a runner at third base.

Then, we had a couple times where they had some guys make some game-saving plays that would have made a difference.”

the final opportunity. Thompson Rivers is 5-1 this season against Okanagan College and 4-2 against VIBI. On the hill for one game this weekend will be the Pack’s most unexpected weapon: pitcher Tyler Hodder.

“It’s funny because I was just talking about that,” Chadwick said when asked about his young hurler’s success.

Hodder leads the CCBC in wins (six) and ERA (1.84).

“We went into the season with him being a first base, DH, arm out of the bullpen when we needed it and, with all of the injuries and his success, he ends up being our ace at this point, leading the league in wins and ERA.” Chadwick is hoping the rest of the WolfPack follow Hodder’s lead over the next few days. Most of the club is now healthy and, with just a handful of games left in the 2016 campaign, appears to be peaking at the right time.

Thompson Rivers’ next four games could go a long way in forecasting the chances of a return to the CCBC winner’s circle for the first time since 2009.

“It’s definitely nice to go into playoffs there with some momentum, [with] everyone feeling confident and the team just rolling,” Douglas said.

“It would be huge for us to get that this weekend.”

“Connor knows the draft is just the beginning of the process,” said Scott Zary, whose glee could be heard over the phone line.

“He knows there’s lots of work ahead, but he’s excited.

“There’s not going to be no issue for a kid like Connor to play for Don Hay.” Zary had 44 goals and 81 points in 30 games with the bantam AA Saskatoon Outlaws in 2015-2016.

Neither Rizzo nor Zary are big-body forwards and Kamloops went small with its first pick last year in Jackson Shepard, a 5-foot-7 and 150pound forward.

“They have big hearts and they’re competitive guys,” Recchi said. “We’re not concerned. If you start concerning yourself with size, you get into a little bit of trouble.”

The blue line was addressed in rounds three and four.

Kamloops took defenceman Quinn Schmiemann of the Notre Dame Hounds with the 59th overall pick in Round 3.

The 5-foot-11, 165-pound rearguard had eight goals and 22 points in 38 games with the Hounds last season.

In Round 4, with the 84th overall pick, Kamloops went with a bigger defenceman in Jimmy Darby, a 6-foot1, 200-pound blue liner who played last season with North Shore Winter Club.

“With Schmiemann, he’s a player that moves the puck well, a real intelligent player with a real good stick and a good skater,” Recchi said.

“Darby is a big, steady guy with a hammer of a shot from the point.”

The Blazers picked twice in Round 5, nabbing a pair of Sask Valley Vipers forwards — 5-foot-8, 140-pound Kyrell Sopotyk and 5-foot-7, 130-pound Jerzy Orchard, who finished first and second, respectively, in Vipers’ scoring last season.

With the first overall pick in the 2016 WHL Bantam Draft, the Kootenay Ice picked forward Peyton Krebs of the Okotoks-based Rocky Mountain Raiders.

The Vancouver Giants traded the second overall pick, their third-round selection (50th overall) and seventh-round pick (147th) in 2016 to the Saskatoon Blades for their third overall, second-round (36th) and sixth-round picks (113th) in 2016, and seventh-round pick in 2017.

With the second overall pick, the Blades nabbed forward Kirby Dach of the Fort Saskatchewan Rangers.

He had 14 goals and 35 points last season.

Vancouver used the third overall pick to select defenceman Bowen Byram of Cranbrook. Byram tallied 22 goals and 37 assists in 34 games for the Lethbridge Golden Hawks last season.

The Swift Current Broncos stayed in Saskatchewan with the fourth overall selection, taking forward Logan Barlage of the Humboldt Broncos.

Barlage had 60 goals and 125 points with the Broncos last season.

With the fifth overall pick, the Medicine Hat Tigers took Langley product Josh Williams, a forward.

The sixth overall pick was used by the

Tri-City Americans to select Sasha Mutala, a forward who played last season with BWC. With the seventh overall pick, the Edmonton Oil Kings selected defenceman Matthew Robertson of the Sherwood Park Flyers.

Luke Toporowski, from Bettendorf, Iowa, was the first player from the U.S. picked in the 2016 draft. The Spokane Chiefs chose the forward eighth overall.

The Portland Winterhawks were forced to forfeit the ninth overall pick for violationg player-benefit regulations in 2012.

Prince George, with the 10th overall pick, selected goaltender Taylor Gauthier of the Calgary Bisons.

The Red Deer Rebels traded the 11th overall pick to the Kelowna Rockets in exchange for their first-round (19th overall) and thirdround (48th overall) picks.

Kelowna used the 11th overall pick to take defenceman Kaedan Korczak of the midget AAA Yorkton Maulers.

Among the top 10 picks were six forwards, three defencemen and one goalie. Five of the top 10 are from Alberta, two are from Saskatchewan, two are from B.C. and one is from the U.S. Xavier Cannon was the only Kamloops product drafted.

The goaltender was selected in the ninth round by the Americans.

Kamloops takes centre-stage as TOFC battles Lower Mainland Kamloops’ Yvonne Manwaring had a strong weekend in action with the Thompson Okanagan Football Club (TOFC), scoring twice and adding an assist as her club went 1-1 in play against the Fraser Valley and Fusion FC. The 2001 club won 3-2 against Fraser Valley, but lost 3-1 against Fusion.

Mya Onyango also had an assist, while Piper Conner and Molly McLeod were strong in TOFC’s backfield.

Undefeated boys

The 2001 TOFC boys posted a win and a tie on the weekend, dominating Fraser Valley 7-1 but played to a 1-1 draw against Fusion FC. Stu Klenner scored one of TOFC’s markers, assisted by Adam Calne, also of Kamloops.

Assist to Grether

Kamloops defender Ainsley Grether posted two assists in action with the TOFC’s 2000 girls on the weekend.

The 2000s played to a 2-1 loss against Fraser Valley and a 2-2 tie against Fusion FC.

Tough weekend

The Kamloops contingent of Jonathan Rinaldi, Domenico Comita, Carson Pyle and Matthew Hanks had a tough weekend, playing to a pair of

losses with the TOFC’s 2002 boys.

TOFC lost both matches, failing to score a goal. Fusion FC walked away with a 1-0 victory, while Fraser Valley posted a 5-0 win.

Sophia Seibel scored two goals and added an assist as TOFC’s 2002 girls posted a 4-1 victory against Fraser Valley on the weekend. Kiana Onyango also had an assist.

The girls fell in their second match of the weekend, 1-0 against Fusion FC.

Mixed results

Playing to a 5-1 loss to Fusion FC and a 1-1 tie against Fraser Valley, the TOFC’s 2003 boys had an up and down weekend on the soccer pitch.

Ben Jacoby, Connor Dueck and Wil Calne, all of Kamloops, took to the field for TOFC.

MIKE BARTRAM MEMORIAL THIS WEEKEND The Kamloops Youth Soccer Association will play host to its first major tournament this weekend, with the annual Mike Bartram Memorial Youth Soccer Tournament beginning tomorrow.

The tournament runs through to Monday, May 9.

Fifty youth teams from Kamloops will play in boys’ and girls’ action on McArthur Island, with clubs ranging from under-13 to U18.

Play begins at 9 a.m. tomorrow. On Sunday, finals and consolation-round games are also scheduled from 9 a.m. onward. There is one game scheduled for Monday.

The tournament is named for one of the KYSA’s

most dedicated former volunteers, who died in the year 2000.

Bartram was a player, coach, referee and advocate for the women’s game.

“It is a privilege for the KYSA to once again honour the memory of one of our organization’s pioneers,” KYSA president Graham Cope said.

“There is no question that soccer in Kamloops would not be as strong and vibrant as it is today had Mike not given so much time and effort to our organization during his lifetime.

“KYSA was very lucky to have had his leadership, vision and knowledge during the years he lived in Kamloops.”

Jennings signs extension with Leos THE CANADIAN PRESS

SURREY — The B.C. Lions have locked up quarterback Jonathon Jennings through the 2018 season.

The CFL club announced the contract extension yesterday, avoiding what could have been an awkward situation when training camp gets underway in Kamloops later this month.

Jennings rocketed up the depth chart to the No. 1 job last season after veterans Travis Lulay and John Beck went down with injuries.

The 23-year-old out of Saginaw Valley State finished with a 3-3 record in six regularseason starts, completing 66 per cent of his passes for 2,004 yards with 15 touchdowns against 10 interceptions before getting injured in the Lions’ playoff loss to the Calgary Stampeders.

But Jennings still had two years left on his rookie contract heading into the 2016 campaign, a deal that would have paid him a fraction of what starting quarterbacks make in the CFL. “The commitment that the B.C. Lions have

made to Jonathon with this extension allows him to come to training camp and focus on football,’’ Lions head coach and general manager Wally Buono said in a statement.

“We owe it to our fans to put an exciting product on the field and having Jonathon sign an extension assures that moving forward.’’

Lulay remains on the roster along with fellow quarterbacks Greg McGhee, who dressed for 10 games last season, and Keith Price, who was signed in the off-season from the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

MANCHESTER, England — Leicester’s players are getting ready for another big party — and this time the fans are invited.

Images of the Leicester squad celebrating its unlikely Premier League title triumph in Jamie Vardy’s house on Monday night were posted on social media and went global.

Wes Morgan, Leicester’s captain, was filmed being spun around the kitchen floor while jubilant teammates danced around him, savoring one of the greatest-ever sporting stories.

Morgan will have the honour of lifting the Premier League trophy tomorrow in front of more than 30,000 fans at Leicester’s atmospheric King Power Stadium.

Add Morgan’s name to the likes of Manchester United’s Roy Keane, Arsenal’s Tony Adams and Manchester City’s Vincent Kompany, some of the other inspirational captains to have got their hands on English soccer’s biggest prize.

The Leicester story is rich with feel-good tales, notably Vardy’s rise from playing non-league soccer to being English champion in the space of five years. Morgan’s back-story is also one to gladden the heart, too.

Leicester will be presented with the trophy after tomorrow’s match against Everton, which will be as much a celebration as a game of football.

“I’m just going to try and hold back the tears,’’ Morgan said.``I think it’s going to be very emotional.

It’s the biggest moment of my life. I can’t wait to lift the trophy and get my hands on it.’’

There’s another treat for Leicester fans on tomorrow: Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli will sing before the game, honouring a commitment he gave to Ranieri in a conversation six weeks ago if Leicester went on to win the Premier League.

Leicester, a 5,000-1 longshot for the title at the start of the season, has achieved the unthinkable with two games still to play. For many other teams in the Premier League, there’s still plenty at stake.

THIEF CAUGHT ON CAMERA A lone male entered the Independent Grocery Store at the Northills Mall on Tranquille Rd. and began to wonder around the store.

This suspicious activity caught the eye of the Loss Prevention officer for the store who followed the suspect for a period of time. The officer stopped for a brief moment to observe another customer and when he went back to the original suspect, the male grabbed some food items and fled the store without making any attempt to pay for them.

The male was caught on the security camera and is described as a Caucasian male, early 30’s, with dark coloured hair and had a light coloured earing in his left ear.

WHO DOES THIS BIKE BELONG TO? The RCMP were on patrol in the downtown area of the City, when two people were seen with a two seater bike. The two people were arrested on another matter, when questioned about the bike they said they found it. At this point the bike has not been reported stolen or missing. This is somewhat of a unique bicycle and is described as a red tandem two seater, with

black seats and black handle bars and is set up with gears. Someone must know who owns this unique bicycle.

Bob Hartley watched bosses come and go three times as coach of the Calgary Flames.

He will need one more general manager to believe in him to stay in the NHL. Fired Tuesday by the Flames, Hartley is itching to get back at it — and he’s not alone. The Anaheim Ducks’ last two coaches, Bruce Boudreau and Randy Carlyle, are also in the mix for vacancies.

“Right now, the coaching carousel is spinning out of control,’’ Hartley said.

“It’s the time of the year. So obviously there’s lots of jobs, there’s lots of names and there’s going to be lots of speculations.’’

The Flames, Ducks, Minnesota Wild and Ottawa Senators all have openings.

All four teams have different expectations for next season and beyond and different requirements for their next head coach.

At 18, Don proudly served Canada during World War ll and continued serving in the Canadian Forces, stationed throughout various bases in Western Canada, until returning to civilian life in 1970. He had a second career with Northwood Pulp Ltd. in Prince George, retiring September 1, 1985.

Don met and married his lovely wife of 62 years Viola, in 1953 in Suffield, Alberta. Don and Vi kept very busy raising seven children; Karen, Brenda, Gerald, Wayne (deceased 1981) Ken, Alan (deceased 1974) and Darren. Spending their summer holidays at the family property located near Kelly Lake was always the highlight of the year.

Don and Vi started their retirement in Canoe, BC settling in Kamloops in 1991 where Vi currently resides. Don and Vi spent the summers living at Kelly Lake along with Don’s siblings Gene (Zee), Ted (Jo) and Gladys (Ray).

Kelly Lake was a special place for Don and all those who visited, full of memories of learning, laughter and love. Throughout his life Don kept all who met him entertained with stories of the military in which he remembered every last detail.

Don led a simple and fulfilling life. He instilled his hard work ethics, honesty and integrity into his children and all those he touched.

Throughout his retirement every morning after breakfast his routine consisted of reading the local rag, word scramble or crossword puzzles. Continually reading throughout the day, with always more than one book on the go, kept his mind as sharp as a tack. He loved his happy hour with a glass of his homemade red wine.

He ended the evening reading for an hour before turning in for the night He is survived by his loving wife Vi, children Karen (Chuck), Brenda (Brian), Gerald (Debbie), Ken (Elizabeth) and Darren (Leanne), grandchildren Jody, Stacey (Paul), Jennifer, Jeffrey (Trina), Patrick (Delena), Shane, Terence (Jenelle), Jaime (Chad), Tyler (Melody), Jeremy, Aleksandr and Tatiana great-grandchildren Elliot, Aidan, Sarah, Alexis, Ava, Evan, Matt, Brilyn, Kaylie and Elise.

Kevin McKenna Newman passed away suddenly at the Ashcroft Hospital on Saturday, April 30, 2016 at the age of 84 years.

Kevin is survived by Frances, his loving wife of 56 years, their children Patrick (Patty) Newman of Cache Creek, and Lorraine (Sean) Donaghy of Kamloops, grandchildren Kali (Patrick) Pilon, Adam Newman, Austin Hoffman and Alexandra Hoffman as well as his brother Paul (Cathy) Newman and sister-in-law Sonia Newman. He is also survived by his inlaws Barbara (Gordon) Jacobs and Marie McDonald and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents Alice and Edward Newman, his sister Joan, and his brother Carl.

As a geologist, geoscientist (P. Eng) he spent all of his professional career in the mining industry doing drilling exploration for mineral deposits. He had a great fondness for nature, living and working in Northern Quebec, New Brunswick, Newfoundland, the Northwest Territories and finishing his career as the chief geologist with Teck Cominco at Highland Valley. He loved fishing, and tying flies, as well as being in his garden. In his working years he was credited for having founded a gem called Gaspeite in northern Quebec.

In recent times Kevin took pride in working with his hands and began hand crafting silver and gemstone jewelry. He and Frances have been active for many years in St. Gerard’s Catholic Church.

A memorial mass for Kevin will be held at

11:00 am on Saturday, May 7

from St. Gerard’s Catholic Church 512 Brink Street, Ashcroft.

A reception will follow in the Parish Hall.

Margaret MacLeod Margaret MacLeod was born in 1925 and raised in Lestock, Saskatchewan, one of 14 brothers and sisters.

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Douglas Ivan Clark on April 30, 2016 at the age of 84 with his family by his side. Douglas left this world on his 64th Wedding Anniversary to join his bride Betty Ilene Clark who passed away June 2015. Doug missed her terribly.

She met her future husband Allan V. MacLeod in Regina and they married in 1949 in Kamloops, BC. Marg and Al raised three children in Kamloops, where Marg worked in a number of positions, finally retiring as a long-term employee of the Workers Compensation Board. After retirement Marg and Al settled in Chilliwack, BC. Margaret was a generous, kind and unconditionally loving Mother. We will always remember her thoughtfulness, her warmth, her sense of decency and dignity and her great strength.

More than anything, she valued hard work, education, laughter and her family.

Marg was predeceased by her husband Allan V. and her eldest daughter Vaughan Lind. She is survived by her son Allan Jr., her daughter Kathryn, her granddaughter Christine Lind and her sisters Helen, Elsie, Grace and Ronnie.

A Graveside Service will take place on May 20th, 2016 at Pleasant St. Cemetery in Kamloops, followed by A Celebration of Life.

Suzanne Amy Dechert (nee Willett), 57, peacefully passed away on April 30, 2016 with her husband at her side at the Royal Inland Hospital in Kamloops, BC after a brief battle with cancer.

She was born January 14, 1959 in Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec.

She graduated from École Secondaire Népisiguit (1977) in Bathurst, NB and enjoyed a 25 year career at Brunswick Mines.

Suzanne was the beloved wife to Christopher Dechert; devoted mother to son Gregg Roberts and doting grandmother to Caleb Roberts.

Suzanne lived life to the fullest; travelling the world and living abroad; experiencing different cultures and creating life-long friendships along the way. She enjoyed simple pleasures; countless walks with her beloved dog; dinners with friends; taking a drive to view the natural beauty that surrounded her. She was a remarkable person that impacted so many.

Gone too soon but her memory will be treasured forever.

She is survived by her mother and father Grant and Georgette Willett; her brothers Mathieu, Arthur, Gary, Marc, Michael and Allan Willett and her sister Sacha Willett.

Douglas was born on November 21, 1931 in Melfort, Saskatchewan to John Clark and Marion (nee Harborne). Doug’s Dad passed when Doug was an infant and he and his sister were raised by his Mom around Beatty, Saskatchewan.

Doug was an entrepreneur and tried his hand at many things, moving his family often. Their moves included Quesnel and 100 Mile House in BC. One of the family’s greatest memories was of the White Rose Restaurant, Shell Gas Station and garage that was a family affair in Melfort, Saskatchewan. The boys, some in their teens at this time, loved the garage where they fostered a love of cars working with their Dad. The restaurant was a fun and happy gathering place for friends in the community. Many antics played out there, and great friendships were formed over Mom’s great food.

Doug and Betty followed their boys back to Quesnel, BC in 1973 where Doug started working for Ernst Forrest Products which later became TOLKO lumber. Doug retired there after 23 years in his final position as shipping foreman. Doug and Betty travelled some as was their dream for a few years, and lived in Cache Creek, eventually settling in Kamloops in their twilight years, where they were close to their children. Doug and Betty enjoyed their gardening, cooking, canning and their family and friends. Poor health kept them closer to home during their later years.

Doug leaves to mourn his sister Jean Ward and her family of Hudson Bay, Saskatchewan, his sons Dale Clark (Debbie) and Evan Clark (Elenore), twin son Doug Clark (Cheryl), twin daughter Deborah Sallenback (David) and son David Clark (Barb), grandchildren Joe Clark (Rhonda), Angela Curle (Noah), Tanya Hawkes (Ross), Shane Lovell (Lonni), Darcy Lovell, Terry Clark (Krystal), Ashley Ayers (Joe), Erin O’Reilly (Michael), Tim Clark (Shay), Candace Palk (John), Amanda Sallenback, Devin Clark (Alison) and Kory Clark, sixteen great-grandchildren and many other family and friends.

Dad, we will miss you every day, we love you!

Our beloved Maggie passed away peacefully on March 16, 2016. Maggie (Toots to her family) was predeceased by her father and mother Winnifred and Alexander Bissett, brother George, sisters Betty, Billie and Jean, nephew Glenn and niece Beverly. Maggie will be greatly missed by Don, her nieces and nephews Gary, Patsy, David, Diane, Maureen, Craig, Michele and Louise.

Maggie was a loyal Sweet Adeline for 20 years. She also sang with the Silver Bells and Silver Follies for many years. Maggie was a gifted vocalist and loved to share this gift with others. Karaoke was a great love of hers and she would perform for friends and volunteer at Seniors Homes to the delight of all. Maggie had the voice of an angel.

Maggie lived a full life and we will all miss her immensely. Many thanks to the doctors, nurses and staff on 5 North at Royal Inland Hospital who made her final days happy ones. The heavens have welcomed a beautiful new angel to join their heavenly choir.

Crews scramble as Fort McMurray fire grows THE CANADIAN PRESS

FORT MCMURRAY — A wildfire that has devastated parts of Fort McMurray has exploded in size and officials say they are water bombing the city to keep it from being overwhelmed by flames.

Officials could not update the number of structures burned — at 1,600 as of yesterday — saying crews have not had time.

“This is an extreme fire event,’’ Chad Morrison of Alberta Forestry told reporters at a briefing in Edmonton yesterday.

“Our first priority, obviously, was the community and the homes as well as the critical infrastructure.’’

Morrison said they had 22 water bombers and were bringing in more, including four from Quebec.

“But let me be clear: air tankers are not going to stop this fire.

“It [the fire] is going to continue to push through these dry conditions until we actually get some significant rain.’’

The fire, which had been menacing Fort McMurray since the weekend, rode a rapid shift in winds Tuesday afternoon to cut through the city on an east-west axis, cutting the main road and sending 80,000 residents fleeing in polar opposite directions under a mandatory evacuation order.

Aided by high winds, scorching heat and low humidity, the fire grew from 75 square kilometres Tuesday to 100 square kilometres on Wednesday, but by yesterday, it was almost nine times that — at 850 square kilometres.

Help Fort Mac Kamloops Ford Lincoln has joined the long list of people, agencies and companies stepping up to help those in Fort McMurray whose lives have been turned upside-down due to the wildfire that forced the city’s 80,000 residents to evacuate.

The dealership at 904 Halston Ave. on the North Shore has an F-150 in its showroom into which it is piling donations from the public.

Kamloops residents can stop by the dealership and donate non-perishable foods, water, blankets, medical supplies, baby supplies, pet food/supplies and clothing, all of which be shipped to Alberta to help those in need.

The fire remained wrapped around the west and southern edges of the city.

If the city was the face of a clock, the fire surrounded it from the number four to 11.

Evacuees began their second full day out of their homes.

About 25,000 remained in oilfield work camps north of Fort McMurray while the rest had moved south to stay in hotels, campgrounds, with friends, or in designated areas in Edmonton and as far south as Calgary.

Premier Rachel Notley said the province was exploring “a broad range of supports’’ for evacuees and expected to roll out initial aid plans soon.

“To those people who have been displaced from their homes, I want you to know that we have your back. You will be supported,’’ said Notley.

The government said they would begin moving out some of

the 25,000 evacuees in the work camps north of Fort McMurray so they can get more social supports in the south.

There is only one road through Fort McMurray, Highway 63, and the fire in the community has cut off those who fled to the north.

Scott Long, with the Alberta Emergency Management Agency, said they would move out the most vulnerable — about 8,000 or so — by air.

After that, gas trucks will be sent north to make sure every car and truck has a full tank before they are led down the highway, through Fort McMurray to the south.

Fort McMurray, the oilsands capital, is 435 kilometres northeast of Edmonton, with few roads in or out.

Officials say there were about 300 firefighters in Fort McMurray, 200 of whom were within the city keeping structures safe.

The military is on standby but has not been called in except for helicopter support to rescue stranded residents, 15 of whom were reported to have been helped out on Wednesday.

The fire has proven to be as capricious as it has been hellacious, leveraging 70 km/h winds Tuesday to level neighbourhoods in the south and southwest, transforming homes that once housed families into smoky wastelands of concrete, rebar and ash. Crews have managed to save critical infrastructure, like the downtown, hospital and water treatment plant.

forced the operations centre to bounce around over the last 48 hours, relocating from the city limits to Anzac, south of the city, and back to Fort McMurray.

Officials say they have yet to determine what caused the fire in the first place.

There have been no

reports of fire-related deaths or injuries, although two people died in a head-on car crash on one of the secondary evacuation routes south of Fort McMurray on Wednesday.

Boil water and air advisories are in place for Fort McMurray and the surrounding area.

Crews received a small break in the weather yesterday, with temperatures expected to fall to 16 C. However, the low humidity and high winds expected to keep the situation fluid and dangerous.

“I expect this fire to continue to grow,’’ said Morrison.

Door to door mail delivery up for debate with review THE CANADIAN PRESS

OTTAWA — Canadians could find themselves with door-to-door mail delivery again at the end of what the government says will be a sweeping review of every business line at Canada Post.

The federal government unveiled yesterday a four-member panel to look at the future of the Crown corporation, including whether the national carrier should get back into banking.

Privatization of Canada Post — in

whole or in part — is not on the table, said Public Services Minister Judy Foote.

She said changes will have to carry a reasonable cost, with the goal of making Canada Post self-sustaining.

Seniors groups and advocates for the disabled cried foul when Canada Post announced a controversial plan to phase out home mail delivery and switch millions of Canadians to community mailboxes as part of cost-saving measures.

During the elec-

tion campaign, Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau pledged to restore door-to-door delivery.

Once in power, he temporarily halted the move to community boxes already underway.

“Home delivery, yes.

Home delivery in what format in terms of time is another question,’’ Foote said when asked about the campaign promise.

“I don’t think we specified in terms of home delivery being seven days a week or five days a week. We need to hear from

Canadians what it is they need and Canadians are responsible and I think they will understand that it has to be at a reasonable cost.’’

NDP MP Erin Weir said the Liberals were clear on the campaign trail they were going to restore home mail delivery and now appear to be backing away from that pledge.

“To most Canadians, that would mean to reestablish the existing service,’’ Weir said.

“So, it’s quite strange for the minister to muse about two days a week or three days a week because, at this point, the Liberals aren’t restoring home mail delivery for any number of days per week.’’

The panel will provide a report by the end of summer, with final recommendations to be made before year’s end, Foote said. The cost of the exercise is $2 million.

In a statement, Canada Post said it would help “determine the best path forward given the ongoing challenges faced by the postal system.’’

The union representing more than 50,000 postal workers in the country said the review was a historic opportunity to reinvent Canada Post.

The postal union has been pushing the banking option as a way for Canada Post to make money and held rallies yesterday in cities as part of that push.

The postal service ditched its financial offerings in 1968, but the Canadian Union of Postal Workers argues re-introducing banking at the agency’s more than 6,500 outlets could generate revenue that’s been lost as fewer people send letters.

Foote said the union will have a voice in the review. The union and Canada Post are in the midst of negotiations on a new collective agreement with a work disruption possible by the summer if the two sides can’t agree on out a new contract.

its next scheduled increase in the minimum wage to 40 cents, bringing it to $10.85 per hour on Sept. 15.

Premier Christy Clark said Wednesday the increase is above the consumer price index formula increase of 10 cents, to share economic growth and “create a fairer, more just society.”

Another 30 cent boost to the formula is scheduled for September 2017.

Assuming the cost of living formula adds 10 cents, the minimum wage would be $11.25, which Clark said will

NDP labour critic Shane Simpson said this year’s increase brings B.C.’s minimum wage to seventh place among Canadian provinces, tied with Yukon.

“What the premier did today was a response to being embarrassed by the fact that we were last,” Simpson said.

Clark acknowledged the formula has seen B.C.’s rate fall behind.

The B.C. formula discounts the minimum wage by $1.25 for restaurant and pub servers to reflect the income they receive from tips.

The B.C. Federation of Labour has been campaigning for a $15 minimum wage. It has estimated that based on the B.C. formula, it would take until 2034 to reach that level.

Simpson said the minimum wage will be an issue in the 2017 election and the NDP will propose a wage higher than what Clark and Jobs

Minister Shirley Bond announced.

“I don’t necessarily want $15,” Simpson said. “What I want is an understanding of what it takes for somebody on minimum wage to be able to have a modest standard of living.”

Clark also announced an additional $2.88 million in training programs to respond to labour shortages. Most of the federal-provincial program will go towards job training up to $15,000 for employers who hire an unemployed person.

Free Comic Book Day returns for its 15th year on Saturday, with hopes of drawing new readers into comic book stores across North America.

The annual promotional release sees comicbook companies provide comics to be handed out for free at stores, with a wide variety of titles featured and specially created for the event.

High Octane Comics in downtown Kamloops is one of the many stores in which readers will be

thumbing through fresh ink.

The origins of comics hails back to the 1930s.

A Hollywood film will make its debut on the biggest screen in the North Okanagan on June 2.

A special premiere for Blackway will be held at the Starlight Drive-In in Enderby.

“We want people in the area the film was shot to come,” said Rick Dugdale, president of Enderby Entertainment, named after his hometown.

Only ticket-holders will have access to the private event and the site can hold 300 cars (and as many people as can fit in those vehicles).

Dugdale isn’t sure if any of the stars will be at the premiere.

“We are still working on that. Our actors will be doing press for the movie, so on that day, we are doing Good Morning America,” he said.

“We are juggling star availability.”

The drive-in was an obvious choice for the premiere, Dugdale said, because it will provide a lot of nostalgia.

“No one can think of a premiere at a drive-in occurring for years.”

f you love your stomach, drive it to Leavenworth and don’t stop until you reach the Kingfisher Restaurant at Sleeping Lady Resort.

We’d come for a taste of Little Bavaria, fascinated by the story of the Little Town That Could.

Back in the late 1950s, after its logging industry slowed down considerably, Leavenworth was facing near extinction.

Its future as one of America’s many ghost towns looked inevitable until the 1960s, when community leaders initiated a plan of action: Leavenworth would be reinvented as a Bavarian hamlet that would attract tourists as much for its craggy mountains and sparkling Wenatchee River rapids as for its cutesy theme.

Enacting the ambitious Bavarian idea involved renovating the downtown buildings so their architecture mimicked oldworld Germany, creating a series of Bavarian themed festivals and persuading retailers to refocus their business on tourism with a distinctly Bavarian theme.

Some 50 years later, as we strolled around the downtown core on a hot summer evening, that theme was ubiquitous.

Every store from Subway to Starbucks featured similar Bavarian design, while restaurants offered schnitzel, bratwurst, sauerkraut and thick, buttery pretzels.

As it happened, we couldn’t be tempted even remotely.

Earlier that day, we’d checked into the Sleeping Lady Resort, just a few minutes away on Icicle Road, and that evening had tasted the culinary genius of its chef, Joshua Holmes at the Kingfisher Restaurant.

The buffet meal he prepared forever redefined buffet dining in my mind, with amazing gourmet inventions like fiddlehead fern salad, melt-in-your-

mouth halibut with peach-basil vinaigrette and roasted tofu steak with soba noodles.

It was utterly, utterly divine — a feast of organic, sustainable, local fare and an unforgettable night for our tastebuds.

Sleeping Lady is a special place. Its family-style cabins are set in a grove of tall trees and each one feels like a self-contained, private home-away-fromhome.

We gratefully plunged into the saltwater pool to rid ourselves of the stickiness of 32 C heat and then headed to the air-conditioned Kids’ Barn for a round of table tennis and foosball.

The resort was fully booked but thanks to its ample acreage and smart layout of accommodation, we felt like we had the place to ourselves.

On Leavenworth’s main street, retailers have followed the Bavarian theme in their architecture, decor and inventory. Gift shops, bratwurst joints and beer gardens bustle with activity.

As dusk settled, we explored the organic garden and, grateful for the deliberate absence of a TV, sat outside our cabin watching the wind rustle through the treetops.

We agreed — it was a magical place.

My son and I checked in for a whitewater adventure on the Wenatchee River with Osprey Rafting the next day.

By July, the whitewater has lost much of its ferocity but, nevertheless, it was a fun day on the river during which we repeatedly plunged in when the water turned calm and were hauled back

inside the boat as we approached the rapids.

Around us, granite mountain slopes soared into the sky, swallows dipped in and out of the water and a couple of ospreys watched from their nests.

Later that day, we ambled lazily around downtown Leavenworth, tasting pretzels and poking our heads into gift shops.

We stopped at Munchen Haus for a Bavarian sausage and a cold beer courtesy of Icicle Brewing Company, loving the genial atmosphere of the outdoor eatery.

Then we headed to the Ski Hill Amphitheatre for a performance of Into the Woods by Leavenworth’s Summer Theatre.

The venue was spectacular: the stage and seating area surrounded by tall pine trees and the sun casting a final ray of sunshine on the distant mountains.

The voices of Leavenworth’s talented youth filled the air, young people who had grown up in this Little Bavaria and never knew their town in the days before, when its future had once looked so terribly bleak.

No one cares that in this Bavaria there’s not a single German accent.

The theme alone, and the town’s wholehearted commitment to it, is enough to entice folks from far and wide, enchant them with Leavenworth’s natural beauty and send them home with sausage in their bellies and memories of a great weekend away.

arcy Franklin is celebrating the 10-year anniversary of Meranti Developments with five Keystone Awards.

The custom home builder, based primarily out of Sun Peaks Resort, raked in the awards at the Canadian Home Builders’ Association’s annual Keystone Home Builders Awards of Excellence earlier this year, winning in five categories — more than any other builder.

There was a hint of déjà vu at the gala for Franklin, owner of Meranti Developments — the company won six golds and several silvers at the 2013 awards.

“It’s always nice to be recognized. The industry is competitive and there are lots of great companies out there,” Franklin said.

In 2016, Meranti won Keystone awards for best single-family detached home — in both the 2,000 to 2,499 square-foot and the $1,500,000 or more categories — as well as awards for building efficiency, best kitchen design project of $30,000 or more and best customer service by a CHBA Central Interior member.

Meranti has worked with Revelstoke Mountain Resort since 2008 and is still the area’s preferred home builder. It was also the preferred builder for Tobiano Resort before its receivership sale.

Sun Peaks has always been the base of operations for Franklin and his wife, who are also raising their family in Kamloops’ nearby resort municipality.

The company has also built a handful of homes in the River City, though Franklin said it has never been a strong focus.

What has been a focus in the last decade, though, is building a company culture based on team and family.

“I am blessed to work with a team of employees, trades and suppliers that look at every project individually and do what is best for our clients,” Franklin said.

Making the most out of motherhood

A

few years ago, when actor Halle Berry announced she was going to have a baby at age 46, Hollywood did not evoke much element of surprise.

At an age when many women experience raising grandkids, the desire for motherhood on Berry’s part surpassed risks associated with giving birth late in life.

The biblical record of the unusual conception of Sarah, the wife of Abraham, and the subsequent birth of Isaac at Sarah’s ripe old age of 90, owes its origin to divine intervention as was Isaac’s subsequent preservation to head up a long line of Jewish patriarchs in fulfillment of the prophetic history.

After a significant comeback from despair to dignity, Sarah died at age 127 without recourse to our equivalent of retirement benefits.

Even in our own days, mothers all over the world endure long hours, undefined pay and guilt-ridden retirement years of what has been called the “second-oldest profession” of motherhood.

In 1914, when Anna Jarvis succeeded in

instituting an annual day dedicated to honour mothers, jubilant public received the declaration in simple ceremonies in the U.S. The official Canadian counterpart of the celebrations, on the second Sundays of every year, began on the following year.

Like with many other noble ideas, the day has reached a landmark in commercial exploitation, with billions of dollars spent on flowers, cards, chocolates and trinkets.

Jarvis’ desire to remember a mother’s hard work for and devotion to family through a simple gift of a white carnation and a letter seems to have been long over-

taken by retailers.

More than the dawn-to-midnight energy expended on housework, the spiritual value of women’s work has been given little credence in Western society.

Men are still seen as more capable of philosophical reflection, while women are tied to earth in the messy physical work of childbearing and child-raising.

But mothering is not only about folding hands and closing eyes.

As the daily life of a mother is more physical and immediate, so is her experience of God. Changing a hundred diapers each week cultivates endurance.

Crankiness can nurture quick forgiveness, exhaustion calls for humility and community.

But, best of all, babies themselves provide unlimited chances to live in gratitude and joy.

Practical conventional discipleship, when they are able, prepares mothers to simply “practise the presence of God” (cf.

Brother Lawrence) in seasons of life filled with disorder.

A Benedictine rule describes its purpose as “seeking the grace of God with the help of many brothers.”

As women with children, mothers’ spirituality looks little like that of a monk, but they seek

the same grace.

They do it with the help of their two-, three-, four- or 11-year-olds.

And though their spiritual lives are somewhat impoverished for some years, they still feel rich.

They can see a spiritual director, read the Bible, enjoy solitude again as soon as they get the chance.

But for some years, they may have to practice spiritual undisciplines.

Let the prayers of many in Christian churches this Mother’s Day be: “Lord, you brought these mothers in our church. We pray you would bless them for the many ways they have been blessings to

their families and us.

“Surround them with the love of those who care so much for them.

“Help them to see the many ways they have touched their families and the many hearts who are blessed by their lives and labours.

“In all our prayers for them, we always ‘pray with joy . . . being confident of this, that he who began a good work in them will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus” (Philippians 1:4,6).
