Two violations noted in worker’s death CAM FORTEMS

A worker killed 15 months ago should not have been alone when he was pinned while unloading a tire weighing more than 1,800 pounds.

The conclusion comes from a WorkSafeBC investigation into the Jan. 27, 2015, death of 36-year-old Nicklas Jay Kristen Taylor.

The report into the death of the foreman at Fountain Tire’s retread facility in Dallas was made publicly available this week.

“Assigning the foreman to work alone, while unloading tires from trailers, was a contributing factor in this workplace accident,” the WorkSafeBC report states.

The report outlines events of the morning of Taylor’s death.

He was called in early because the shipper/ receiver could not work that day.

Taylor arrived at 5 a.m. and began unloading semi-trailer full of industrial tires, some of them standing six feet high and weighing more than 1,800 pounds (816 kilograms).

The company has a forklift available with a special loader, but Taylor stopped using it at one point.

tires were “awkward” to load with the forklift.

Sitting outside waiting for the trailer to be unloaded was the truck driver, who did not see Taylor being pinned by the toppled tire that was loaded vertically in the trailer.

“The unloading of the OTR (off-road-tire) was done by the foreman alone,” the report states.

“At the time of the incident, Fountain Tire did not have any written safe work procedures related to unloading of tires from trailers.”

Fountain Tire spokesman Jamie Bliss said yesterday the corporation has instituted company-wide changes since the tragic death of Taylor.

Changes include workers not being alone when handling tires over a certain size.

“There were procedures shared with the rest of the organization,” Bliss said.

While the report found there were no written procedures regarding handing of the tires, Bliss said there was an “understanding, but not documented.”

“We put more controls on our workingalone procedures,” he said.

The WorkSafeBC investigator could not determine whether Taylor rolled the tire toward the back of the trailer, when it tipped and trapped him, or whether it inadvertently rolled due to the slope of the trailer.

WorkSafeBC determined the company violated two regulations: failure to provide written procedures for unloading oversized tires and failure to do a risk assessment for staff assigned to work alone.

Bliss said the agency has not received notice from WorkSafeBC regarding penalties for the infractions.

Taylor was one of two workers in Kamloops killed on the job last year.

Notes Fire Hydrant Flow Testing From now until May 15, Kamloops Fire and Rescue will be Flow Testing the City's fire hydrants to ensure they are operating properly and have adequate flow. Dallas Barnhartvale Nature Park Dallas Barnhartvale Nature Park is one of the City’s newest nature parks, boasting a variety of different ecosystems supporting a rich diversity of natural plant communities and wildlife species.

Often described as “cattle country,” it is a land of rolling hills and valleys covered by dry grasslands and open forests. There are over 6kms of trails leading through the shaded Interior Douglas Fir stands dominated by Douglas-fir trees of all ages and sizes. In the hotter and drier areas, grasslands and open ponderosa pine forest predominate with extensive grassland communities, commonly called the “upper grasslands,” occurring. Bluebunch wheatgrass, junegrass, and fescues are prominent grasses in these areas.

Other trails lead over and through the natural silt bluffs offering sweeping views of the South Thompson Valley, and one trail leads to a newly built gazebo overlooking the wetlands. This series of 5 ponds was constructed in 2014 by a group of volunteers who work diligently to ensure native species of vegetation, aquatic insects, invertebrates and wildlife are establishing in and around the wetlands.

The nature park trails also join up with the Dallas Barnhartvale horse and hiker trail preservation society (DBHHTPS) trails, almost tripling the number of trails available for hiking, biking and horseback riding in the area. While exploring the trails, watch for the showy daisy, nodding onions, the Mariposa Lily, and many other native plant species all blooming during the month of June.

Check out the activity guide for our nature hikes through the parks in June , as well, keep an eye on our kiosks for our speakers series happening in all the parks this July and August.

Toddler dies in accident The BC Coroners Service is investigating the death of a toddler near Kamloops earlier this month.

The death is believed to have been an accident involving a vehicle.

RCMP Cpl. Jodi Shelkie confirmed there was a death of a young child near Red Lake, but said details are

not being released out of respect to the family.

The BC Coroners Service is investigating and spokeswoman Barb McLintock said there may be information to release today.

Red Lake is a small community 45 kilometres northwest of Kamloops.

Sweeping changes to the way RCMP detachments can utilize volunteer auxiliary constables have not yet had much of an impact for Kamloops Mounties, police say.

“So far, the only thing that’s changed for the auxiliary program is that operational ride-alongs have been removed,” Kamloops RCMP Cpl. Jodi Shelkie told KTW. “The program is still under national review as to how, or if, the duty matrix and uniform will change.”

Earlier this year, the national police force put a stop to ridealongs and firearms training for auxiliary constables.

The changes were made following a year-long safety review into the auxiliary program after an auxiliary constable was shot, alongside a regular officer, at a casino in Alberta in 2015.

Auxiliary constables — Kamloops has about 30 of them — are unarmed and work on a volunteer basis.

They are required to volunteer 160 hours each year.

In Kamloops, auxiliary constables are most visible at Kamloops Blazer games and other large-scale events, helping to direct traffic and control crowds.

Shelkie said those duties have not changed, but could in the future as RCMP brass continue to examine the role of an auxiliary.

“It would be premature to comment on what it means to the Kamloops detachment until we know how the program might be changed,” she said.

“Once we hear what future changes there might be, we’ll be in a better place to respond.”

The Crown will call 29 witnesses and present more than 13 hours of video evidence at the preliminary inquiry of a Kamloops man accused of murdering a 49-yearold man at a Valleyview motel in January.

Gordon Camille appeared in Kamloops provincial court on Thursday as lawyers

discussed the twoweek hearing, which is expected to take place in October or November.

The 65-year-old was charged with seconddegree murder after Dennis Adolph was found dead at the 4 Seasons Motel on Jan. 26.

Details of the allegations against Camille, who is being held in custody, have not been made public.

Adolph’s death was the second homicide of 2016 in Kamloops.

Eric Charlie is charged with seconddegree murder in connection to the Jan. 22 death of John Southwell, 30, who was killed during an altercation outside a Tranquille Road sushi restaurant.

Charlie, 32, is in custody and is due back in court on Tuesday, May 2.

A project to digitize and make available online more than 100 years of the region’s history has made a breakthrough, allowing it rights to what was for a century the dominant newspaper in Kamloops — the Sentinel.

Through its

NewsHound website, the TNRD library has made available online searchable versions of Kamloops This Week and the former Kamloops Daily News.

Dates on each vary, but include some editions of KTW from the early 1990s and Daily News editions from 2001 to its final edition in January 2014.

Completing those newspaper archives is the current goal, but the larger project of providing a complete history of Kamloops is now also possible.

Director of libraries Marc Saunders said the project was stymied in its effort to make available the Kamloops Sentinel and predecessor Inland Sentinel when rightsholders the Thomson family appeared uninterested in sharing.

Administrators first went through Thomson Newspaper Co.’s successor, Thomson-Reuters, without success.

It then turned Woodbridge Co., a private company controlled by the Thompson Co. Saunders said an archivist with Woodbridge advised the digitization project to look more closely at its own records.

“He kept saying, ‘Have you looked at everything?’”

“As they closed, they wanted to dispose of items they had: old papers, microfilm and a lot of photos,” Saunders said.

“They wanted to find a responsible way of dealing with it. They had no way to keep it . . . They assigned all the rights to the Kamloops Museum and Archives.

We didn’t know that.”

That has cleared the way for a century

The BIG Little Science Centre is looking for a new home — again.

While there’s no rush, the society that runs the centre has been told its current location in the former Happyvale elementary building is where School District 73 could put a French immersion school on the North Shore.

Happyvale is in Brocklehurst, at 655 Holt St., and is the fourth in a series of science centre sites.

Daily News editions now available through Newshound, Saunders said the focus is completing the Kamloops This Week back to its founding in 1988.

The project will then return to Daily News editions from its conversion to a daily publication in the 1980s.

That work is expected to take several years.

Then work will begin on the Sentinel editions.

“It’s enormous,” Saunders said of the task. “It will take quite a few years to do it and do it right.”

While organizers are thrilled to have rights to the Sentinel,

Retail space is too expensive for the centre, a registered charity that funds itself through donations, grants and some sales. It has two staff members: one full-time and one part-time.

The centre charges admission ranging from $3 for children ages six to 15 to $15 for a family.

An annual membership of $60 for a family or $45 for an individual includes free admission for the year.

Once complete, the digital archive of newspapers from the region will offer researchers an easy way to search on any topic using keywords.

It can be done from home and will replace the crude index card and microfilm process now in place.

The project is being funded by the Irving K. Barber Learning Centre at UBC with a $15,000 annual grant.

That is matched by the TNRD library, Thompson Rivers University and Kamloops Museum and Archives.

Microfilm images in some cases were taken by shining a lightbulb in the middle of the paper — so the middle of each image is legible while the corners are dark.

This will also cause problems for optical character recognition needed for keyword searches.

NewsHound is also looking for smaller publications that closed in all the towns in the region. It has obtained 200 images of the Chase Tribune from 1912, for example.

While the project is long-term, Saunders said its completion will have lasting benefits.

“We tend to be so focused on today.

“Digitization, if we do it right, will literally be here for centuries,” he said.

“In 500 or 600 years, people will be able to read newspapers from this region that they wouldn’t if we didn’t take this initiative.”

Adding a school isn’t likely to happen as long as the provincial government continues to mandate cuts to administration costs in districts, he said, noting a new school would add such costs.

Stewart said the need to move has the society looking for stability, a location it can afford and with the space for the many science exhibits, experiments, workshops and presentations it offers every year.

He said SD73 has always helped the centre relocate and offers it a reasonable lease.

But, Stewart added, it’s time “to find that permanency.”

Accused in poaching case cite delay by Crown TIM PETRUK

A First Nations couple who claimed they are being “persecuted for being Indian” after being charged with poaching offences have asked a judge to throw out their charges because of excessive delay caused by the Crown.

Jay Coutts and Farrah Palmer are facing one count each of trafficking in wildlife.

Coutts is charged with an additional count of hunting during prohibited hours.

At previous court appearances, the pair

said they intended to fight the charges on the grounds they violate their rights as natives.

In an interview outside court following an earlier appearance, Coutts told KTW he made a living selling meat — something he believes he has the right to do.

They were charged in June 2014 and had their first court appearance later that month. After a number of pre-trial hearings, a trial date was set for Sept. 24, 2015.

Coutts and Palmer were not represented by a lawyer.

They showed up for trial intending to rep-

resent themselves and were handed last-minute disclosure from the Crown.

Defence lawyer Greg Thompson, who was retained by the couple to make a constitutional argument based on delay, appeared in Kamloops Law Courts yesterday.

“On Sept. 24, the trial was set to be heard,” he said. “The accused were acting as self-represented litigants. They were handed two binders of 146 pages of Crown disclosure. This was the day of the trial.”

The trial was adjourned and Coutts and Palmer

retained a lawyer.

Of the 22 months that have passed since the charges were laid, Thompson said, 18 months and two weeks of those delays fall at the hands of the Crown and institutional delay.

Thompson asked that the charges be thrown out.

The Crown case against Coutts and Palmer has been described in court as a straightforward one.

Conservation officers went undercover and caught the couple selling meat, the Crown alleges.

Should a registered sex offender who admitted to sexting with a 15-year-old co-worker at a Kamloops pizza shop when he was 22 be allowed to become a lawyer?

According to the Law Society of B.C., no — at least not yet.

The Law Society released yesterday its decision on the application of the 29-yearold former Thompson Rivers University student.

At the request of the applicant, he is not named in the decision.

He applied to the Law Society in October 2014 to become an articled student — one of the last steps for law students before they become lawyers.

Because of a number of issues in his past, including a criminal record, a hearing was held last May in front of a Law Society panel.

The panel heard the applicant enrolled in undergrad studies at Thompson Rivers University in 2009.

Also that year, he was employed as a delivery driver for a Kamloops pizza shop.

He became involved in a

flirtatious relationship with a 15-year-old co-worker and they eventually became involved, to a limited extent, romantically.

The panel heard the two exchanged racy text messages and the applicant pressured the teen to send him nude photos. She sent pictures of herself in various states of undress.

The panel described the texts as disturbing.

“They are explicit and profane and would reflect very poor judgement even if they were sent to someone much older than a 15-year-old girl,” the panel stated.

The girl’s mother found the texts and called police.

The applicant turned himself in to Kamloops RCMP in September 2009 and spent the night in jail.

In 2011, he pleaded guilty to luring and was later handed a one-year conditional sentence and ordered to register as a sex offender for a decade — a term that expires in 2022.

The applicant found himself in hot water again in November 2014, while a law student at the University of B.C. At a law school event, the panel heard, he threw an alco-

holic drink at a female student who had insulted his appearance. He was banned from future law school events.

The following month, police busted him behind the wheel of a car-share vehicle after consuming seven to nine drinks.

He was given an automatic 90-day driving ban.

Kamloops lawyer and former provincial court judge Bill Sundhu wrote a character reference for the applicant.

The two met when the applicant volunteered on Sundhu’s campaign as a New Democrat candidate in Kamloops-Thompson-Cariboo during last fall’s federal election.

Sundhu shared his own experiences, having “messed up” himself, the panel heard.

In 2006, while Sundhu was a provincial court judge, he was arrested in Vancouver and spent a night in the drunk tank.

He later stepped down from the bench and stopped drinking.

In his letter, Sundhu called the applicant’s alcohol and marijuana use “problematic” and “not a good idea.”

The panel said the applicant can re-apply in 2017.

Fras said a fourmonth delay in late 2014 and early 2015 was caused by the accused.

In that case, a judge

adjourned the matter to allow Coutts and Palmer to seek legal advice.

The number of overdose deaths this year in the province and in the city will easily set records and it seems no amount of warnings from the police, press and medical authorities will stop the carnage.

The drug has also featured prominently in the Kamloops Law Courts this week during what is believed to be the first sentencing hearing of a person dealing the drug.

NOT: The reaction from the B.C. Liberal Party to news of just how much extra money Premier Christy Clark receives via taxpayer-funded donations to the party, on top of her near-$200,000 salary.

True, it is not news the premier receives money donated to the party, but the eyebrow-raising amount ($50K) is indeed newsworthy.

Rather than reply with the “this is the way it has always been done” mantra, it would be heartening to hear one government MLA concede what most taxpayers feel: that tax-deductible donations should not be used to top up an already-generous salary.

Perhaps that same MLA can add that paying thousands of dollars to meet the premier is about as unseemly as politics gets.

Where the truth isn’t mined

I

n war, they say, the first casualty is truth.

In the ongoing battle over Ajax, there are dozens of virtual bodies littering cyberspace, many courtesy of the Facebook page called Support Ajax Mine.

To be clear, the page is the creation of those who support the proposed copper and gold mine south of Aberdeen and has no official link to KGHM Ajax.

And that is an advantageous caveat for the company since the Support Ajax Mine Facebook page is populated by a great swath of people who consider facts to be an afterthought to intelligent conversation and whose comments often serve to promote Kamloops as a redneck town housing a mindset void of a single progressive thought.

If one is to visit the page, one will find plenty of posts supporting Ajax combined with crass comments that would be right at home at a Donald Trump rally — plenty of invective with precious little research and facts.

To be fair, there are anti-Ajax groups that disseminate hyperbole that disturbs me.

No, I don’t believe the sky will fall and all doctors will vanish if the mine is approved. And, no, KGHM is not the worst polluter in Europe (the company declined to give emissions information to an activist group and was, therefore, arbitrarily placed at the bottom of the list).

I live closer than most to the mine site (within two kilometres) and still remain undecided on the project and not overly concerned about the effects of Ajax if it does get approved.

But the approach to the debate

MUSINGS taken by pro- and anti-Ajax forces is jarring: for the most part, antiAjaxers will debate scientific studies and discuss quality of life and a concern for the health of their families, while pro-Ajaxers will belittle such data and promise to drive a 4X4 up the backside of any Ajax opponent within driving distance of the nearest gravel pit.

A current post on the Support Ajax Mine Facebook page illustrates the mindset and reveals the ignorance of some who contribute to the online noise.

News Kamloops, an online news blog, published details of a bike ride this weekend in Knutsford organized by an anti-Ajax group. We published the same, as did various other Kamloops media, considering it is, at the least, a community-information notice.

Innocuous? Of course — unless you are a Support Ajax Mine Facebook page devotee.

A sample of the responses: • “I think we should all slap a Support Ajax Mine on our tailgates, drive up there and dust them out.”

• “I will phone Kamloops News to stop delivering their biased crap

to my door and take it to those that they support!!!”

• “The mine is going to happen regardless of what the leaf-licking tree huggers do.”

• “Stop buying products advertised in their paper, and tell the advertisers why.”

Having an opinion is one thing; having an opinion based on facts is another.

And, since the moderator of Support Ajax Mine chose the cowardice of anonymity when conversing with me as I attempted to explain to the Stop Ajax Mine group the basic details of the media landscape in the city, allow me to use this space to do so: News Kamloops is not a newspaper; therefore, there is nothing being delivered to doorsteps, nor are there products advertised in its “paper.” There is but one newspaper in this city — this one — and we remain one of the only media outlets to be neither for nor against the proposed mine.

KTW has not taken a stance on Ajax because, quite frankly, to state with certainty whether the mine will be good or bad for Kamloops amid so much conflicting and complex information at this research stage would be foolish.

News Kamloops has an editor who opposes the mine, regardless of what the findings may be. Radio NL has a news director who supports the mine, regardless of what the findings may be.

It would be wonderful to wake up one day and find some semblance of maturity and knowledge on cyberspace pages such as Stop Ajax Mine.

A good start would be for the commenters to correctly identify the news organization they detest for simply reporting news.

ARE NOT THE BEST WAY TO HELP LOCAL REFUGEES Editor: Re: KTW’s April 25 story about refugee bus passes (‘Cavers wants council to give nod to free bus passes to refugees’): I’d like to understand his thoughts on how this would be fair to the other users of transit.

I have lost my licence because of a disability and my use of transit is just simply to get from Point A to point B. Cavers said: “A lot of people feel like we’re giving away bus passes, but it’s just allowing them to use buses that are already travelling. It’s not forgoing revenue because they would be trying to get around some other way, like walking.”

According to this logic, people who cannot obtain a driver’s licence due to medical reasons, like myself, or financial hardship should also qualify for a free bus pass.

Without it, I would be trying to get around some other way like walking.

I’m not against helping refugees, and I think the fact council is actually considering Kamloops citizens as people and not just numbers (anonymous taxpayers without the real challenges of day-to-day living) is a step in the right direction.

But, we have to help them in a way that it is fair to all. Singling them out for free bus passes for his reason is not fair.

Again, despite the consideration for (some) real people who may need assistance, it’s another sign of how council is irresponsible with tax dollars (the cost would be $51,000 per year, and Kamloops’ taxpayers would likely foot the bill).

Next election, people need to take into consideration the candidates that have this city’s financial position as a priority — not spending tax dollars they say they don’t have, for only a select group of people.

As for Bennett, all you have to do is

look at his response to the Mt. Polley mine tailings-pond disaster to see where his loyalties lie.

I do not believe anyone deserves respect simply because of the office they hold.

They need to earn it and no member of this party has earned mine for their actions speak louder than their words.

The B.C. Liberal Party seems to be the best that money can buy.

BUTT OUT, STINKY SMOKERS Editor: As I leave my place of work and look for a relaxing spot to have my lunch, I choose a cement picnic table in Riverside Park.

I know it will not be “clean”.

There may be footprints. There may be dust. There may be bird poop.

I can deal with that. What I cannot deal with, though, and what makes me sick to my stomach is that smokers have chosen to crush their filthy scum-

MONARCHS COME EACH SPRING Editor: On a recent trip to Kamloops, I noticed a front page headline ‘Luring the Monarch.’

Local naturalist Frank Ritcey suggests Kamloops is the northern limit of the monarch’s habitat.

For 25 years or so, I have noted the

arrival of these butterflies coincide with the bloom of lilacs in our area, and have a number of photographs to show it.

Council nixes free transit request ANDREA KLASSEN

A request to give refugees in Kamloops free bus passes for one year has once again failed to get to the debate stage at city council.

Paul Lagace, executive director of Kamloops Immigrant Services, had asked council to

provide passes for about 50 refugees who have arrived or will land in the Tournament Capital this year. Lagace said because refugees receive a limited level of financial assistance from the government, transit travel can be unaffordable.

The letter first landed on council’s agenda in mid-April, but councillors chose to receive it for information — essentially

bypassing the request.

Coun. Donovan Cavers, who had told KTW the lack of debate was likely an accident, attempted to bring the letter up for reconsideration at council’s Tuesday meeting, but did not secure enough votes to launch a debate.

Only Cavers and Coun. Denis Walsh voted to revisit the buspass issue.

1. Mow High Leaving grass 5 – 7.5 cm (2-3”) tall, shades the roots and helps prevent evaporation.

Grass grows deeper and stronger roots that can overpower weeds. Avoid cutting off more than 1/3 of the grass height.

2. Grasscycle Leave grass clippings on the lawn when mowing. Eliminate bagging and raking and reduce watering and fertilizing.

3. Water Properly Water deeply, but infrequently. This means watering 1 - 2 days per week, but when you do, give your grass about 2.5 cm (1") of water. As with mowing high, this also produces deeper stronger roots and helps the grass withstand dry periods.

As the provincial government moves to address sexual assaults on university campuses, Thompson Rivers University is taking its own action.

Recommendations from a task force set up last summer to address the issue are expected to be ready sometime next month, said Christine Adam, dean of students at TRU. An interim protocol was put into place last July after a student went public, saying the university didn’t respond adequately when she reported being assaulted.

The task force was told to work on four tasks: develop a

sexual-assault policy and review other policies and procedures that address sexual assault and/ or sexual harassment; enhance current sexual-assault prevention education programming; develop clear reporting and response protocols; and develop communication plans for the three tasks.

TRU consulted with the Kamloops Sexual Assault Counselling Centre as it made the moves to develop a firm policy.

This week, Victoria introduced legislation requiring public post-secondary institutions to create sexual-misconduct policies within one year of the bill becoming law.

The policies are to be

reviewed in consultation with students at least once every three years, although the Minister of Advanced Education can also order reviews.

The president of the university must also report annually on the policy to the board of governors.

“Post-secondary students throughout British Columbia welcome today’s legislation as a necessary first step to protect students,” said Sacha Fabry, chairperson of the Alliance of B.C. Students on Wednesday.

“Sexualized violence on campuses is a growing problem and requires the entire sector to work together to tackle the issue, in consultation with students and survivors of sexual violence.”

Some can ride the bus gratis Non-profit groups looking to secure a small number of bus passes for their events will no longer have to come to Kamloops city council.

At its Tuesday meeting, council agreed to adopt new policy allowing staff to waive or discount bus fares for community groups under certain conditions.

ment and engineering services Marvin Kwiatkowski said the policy will allow staff

to waive transit fees for free community events or to help volunteers attend events.

Groups who receive free bus services must recognize Kamloops Transit as a sponsor and the additional passengers must be able to be accommodated within the city’s current bus schedule.

In cases where events don’t meet those conditions, Kwiatkowski said event organizers can still come to council to ask for free transit.

Other practices that will encourage a healthy lawn: Dethatching – Aerating – Topdressing – Overseeding - Fertilizing Consider mixing White Clover in with your lawn to out-compete weeds as well as reduce water and fertilizer needs.

Try corn gluten meal to manage weeds. It is an organic fertilizer that prevents the germination of seeds, however, it does not control existing weeds.

There have been things to like about the Thompson Rivers WolfPack, 20 games into the Canadian College Baseball Conference season.

The team has hit, as it seemingly always does.

Catcher Evan Douglas leads the league in batting average, hitting .411, while outfielder Ethan Mohan leads in RBIs with 24. Four of the top five long-ball hitters in the CCBC all hail from Kamloops, with Mohan leading the club’s charge with a pair.

The Pack — which is admittedly young, boasting 21 freshmen on its 34-man roster— hasn’t been derailed by inexperience, playing to a 10-10 record two-thirds of the way through the season, good for third place in the CCBC

entering this weekend’s action.

But there are cringe-worthy parts to Thompson Rivers’ statline, too.

The Wolves have yet to sweep a weekend, winning three-of-four contests only once.

They’ve won lopsidedly, topping the leagueleading Prairie Baseball Academy Dawgs 18-2, for example, only to lose to the lowly Calgary Dinos, the CCBC’s worst team, 13-8 and 16-1 the following weekend.

And, as often as the defence has been solid, it has been porous.

“We’ve been pretty consistent at the plate — we’ve got Evan Douglas leading the league in hitting and we’ve got Ethan Mohan leading the league in RBIs — but it has a lot to do with a lot of runs being scored,” WolfPack head coach Ray Chadwick said.

Chadwick and company are hoping to put together a more consistent stretch this weekend in Calgary, facing the Dinos, as well as the Okanagan College Coyotes.

Thompson Rivers is 3-1 against the Coyotes so far this season, but 0-2 against the Dinos.

The weekend marks the second-to-last of the regular season.

The CCBC Championship will be in Kelowna from May 11 to May 14.

The Wolves hope to see the return of a pair of injured pitchers this weekend — righthanders Dillon Ferguson and Regan Gillis — both of whom normally slot in at the top of the rotation.

SPORTS Blazers crack best alltime list The WHL released numbers four through eight on its list of the top 50 players in league history yesterday and two former Kamloops Blazers were named.

Defenceman Scott Niedermayer chimes in at No. 5 and forward Jarome Iginla is No. 7.

Niedermayer finished his WHL career by winning his second league title and capturing the first Memorial Cup in Blazers’ history in 1992.

Iginla amassed 236 points in 183 career regular-season WHL games and was also a point-per-game player in the post-season.

As part of the WHL’s 50th-season celebrations, a panel of historians selected the top 125 players in WHL history in September.

Seattle, which has lost only one of its 13 playoff games this year, now awaits the winner of the Eastern Conference showdown between the Brandon Wheat Kings and the Red Deer Rebels.

The Wheat Kings and Rebels will be in action tonight in Red Deer for Game 5 of the series. Brandon, which fell to Kelowna in the 2015 WHL Championship, leads the series 3-1.

Bantam Riverdogs hunting first victory The bantam AAA Riverdogs went 0-4 on the opening weekend of their regular season, losing a pair of league games against Cloverdale on McArthur Island, before travelling to the Coast for a pair of losses against Cowichan Valley.

The Riverdogs were home to Cloverdale following the Kamloops Minor Baseball Association’s opening ceremonies, but lost 5-4 (in extra innings) and 5-2.

Pool prowess leads to podium

Sutherland heading south Kamloops Classic Swimming club member Makena Sutherland has accepted an athletic scholarship to swim for the New Mexico State Aggies in Las Cruces, N.M. Sutherland’s university athletic career will begin in September.

The Aggies are an all-female team competing in the Western Athletic Conference of the NCAA’s Division 1.

Sutherland has been admitted to the NMSU Honours College and will be studying mechanical engineering.

She will graduate from South

Kamloops secondary this spring.

The Classics swimmer is the third from the Kamloops club to sign an athletic scholarship in recent months. In November, Colin Gilbert committed to the University of Denver Pioneers and Megan Dalke signed on with the UBC Thunderbirds.

The Kamloops Classic Swimming club put together a solid performance at the club’s Spring Madness Meet on the weekend, which included athletes ages 10 and under.

All 11 Classics swimmers in attendance hit the podium in at least one event.

Nine-year-old Sienna Angove led the way with five firstplace finishes, touching the wall first in the 200-metre individual medley, 50m freestyle, 100m butterfly, 100m breaststroke and 200m backstroke. Eight-yearold Lily Eckerman, meanwhile, topped the podium in four events — the 50m freestyle, 100m backstroke, 100m freestyle and 100m breaststroke.

In other nine-yearold action, Claire Bagabuyo was first in

the 50m breaststroke and second in the 50m freestyle, while Jacob Heer was first in the 50m backstroke, second in the 50m breaststroke and third in the 100m freestyle. Ryder Litke finished first in the 50m freestyle, the 100m backstroke, the 200m breaststroke and the 400m freestyle, with his 400m time a AA provincial time standard.

Parker Cameron posted a AAA provincial time standard in the 400m freestyle, one of a number of standard times for the swimmer this season, and swam to first-place finishes in the 100m backstroke, 100m breaststroke, 200m breaststroke and 400m freestyle, and a

second-place finish in the 200m IM. Reid McCauley was first in the 200m freestyle, third in the 50m butterfly and also had a second-place finish, while Finn Vukusic was first in the 200m IM, 50m butterfly, 100m freestyle, 100m breaststroke and second in the 50m freestyle.

Vukusic also achieved a regional time standard in the 200 IM. In 10-year-old action, Shaelyn Christie was first in the 100m breaststroke and third in both the 200m IM and 50m freestyle.

Justine Etherington was second in the 100m breaststroke and third in the 100m freestyle.

Kate McCullagh finished first in the 50m freestyle, second in the 100m freestyle and third in the 100m backstroke.

Preds ready for Shark attack

ANAHEIM — The Nashville Predators’ celebration of a landmark moment in franchise history consisted of a few minutes of excitement in the Honda Center dressing room with a 14-year-old Nelly song blaring in the background.

By outlasting the Anaheim Ducks in a 2-1 victory on Wednesday night, the Predators won a playoff round for only the third time ever. Facing Game 7 pressure for the first time, they bent and scrambled, but never broke.

Their reward was the chance to go right back to work on their Stanley Cup quest.

“I think that’s all you can ask for, is another chance to start Game 1 in San Jose and work from there,’’ Predators forward James Neal said.

“No guy wanted to be done playing hockey. We had a belief in this room that we could win this series, and we did.’’

The Predators will visit the Shark Tank tonight for Game 1 of the second round, getting another highscoring California power. San Jose routed the Los Angeles Kings in five games.

Puck-drop is slated for 7:30 p.m.

Yet the Predators found a road resilience they’ll want to replicate at the Shark Tank. After Colin Wilson and Paul Gaustad scored in the first period, Pekka Rinne made it stand up with ample help from his defence.

Rinne made 36 saves for the wildcard Predators, who rallied from a 3-2 series deficit and ousted the Pacific Division champion Ducks with a workmanlike road victory. With a few big saves by Rinne and just enough fortunate bounces, Nashville earned just the third playoff series win in team history — the first since 2012, and the second over Anaheim.

“It means a lot, and it shows a lot of character,’’ Rinne said. “As a group, we can learn from this series. It’s a really good team we played against, and there’s a lot of good things we can take from this series. Moving forward, I think we’re a better team already.’’

The Ducks had numerous late chances to tie it while largely dominating the final two periods, outshooting Nashville 28-10. But a redirected shot clanked off Rinne’s post in the third, and nothing went in during a frantic final minute, leaving the Ducks with a mountain of frustration and the Predators with a cathartic escape.

“They had some chances and a lot of shots, but I still thought that

we defended really hard,’’ Rinne said.

“We didn’t give them second chances, and I was able to see most of the pucks. We had to play defence, and they played a strong game tonight, but we did an excellent job.’’

The Predators handled the pressure splendidly. Only six players had even appeared in a seventh game with other teams, but they were already looking forward to their return to Nashville next week.

“It’s nice to get to the second round,’’ Wilson said. “I think our fans have been waiting for it, and we want to keep moving on.’’

The Ducks’ recent Game 7 failures followed similar scripts that all started with an early goal by the visitors: Detroit, Los Angeles and Chicago all scored in the opening 4 1/2 minutes.

The Sharks present their own challenges with Joe Pavelski, Joe Thornton and Patrick Marleau, but the Predators will be rolling up the California coast with confidence.

“It’s a big step,’’ said coach Peter Laviolette, who improved to 5-1 in Game 7s. “If you can’t take this one step, you can’t take any more steps.’’

The St. Louis Blues and Dallas Stars begin their best-of-seven Western Conference semifinal series tonight.

THEFT FROM CAR WASH This a good reminder to all Car Wash owners that thieves have found a way to take the coins from change machine that is used to at the car wash.

On Monday, April 25th, the Tk’emlups’ car wash was a victim of this style of theft. The suspect would go to change machine, then by “fishing” would take the original bill back but still get the coins in return. The suspect had taken $80.00 in coins before a store employee heard the change machine was continuously working. The employee went out and noted a First Nations male leaving the area and got into an older 2001 Red Buick Regal and drove off. The owner of this vehicle has not been located as of yet.

Be aware of this vehicle and watch for any suspicious people hanging around the car wash and especially near the change machine.

VANDALISM TO SCHOOLS Over the past couple of months there have been numerous cases of vandalism to schools, from broken windows and graffiti to minor thefts.

The latest case of vandalism took place sometime overnight on Thursday, April 21st at the Norkam trade centre. The suspects used a cutting torch to cut a lock off

of one of the storage containers, there was nothing taken from the container. There was no other damage to the school or any of the school property. The police need your help to reduce vandalism to the schools. If you see people at the schools late at night call the police immediately they will attend and determine why the

The latest theft from an RV took place between April 1st and April 19th. A travel trailer had been parked on Mission Flats Road, the owners had checked it on April 1st and were beginning to restock the items from the pervious year.

The suspects forced open a door, once inside the suspects took a

black and red Honda generator, a Sony TV and a set of sockets that were marked, “Made in Australia”.

The suspects would have needed a vehicle to transport all the items from the travel trailer.

Obituaries & In Memoriam Margaret (Maggie) Merluk May 12, 1932 - March 16, 2016

Our beloved Maggie passed away peacefully on March 16, 2016. Maggie (Toots to her family) was predeceased by her father and mother Winnifred and Alexander Bissett, brother George, sisters Betty, Billie and Jean, nephew Glenn and niece Beverly. Maggie will be greatly missed by Don, her nieces and nephews Gary, Patsy, David, Diane, Maureen, Craig, Michele and Louise.

Maggie was a loyal Sweet Adeline for 20 years. She also sang with the Silver Bells and Silver Follies for many years. Maggie was a gifted vocalist and loved to share this gift with others. Karaoke was a great love of hers and she would perform for friends and volunteer at Seniors Homes to the delight of all. Maggie had the voice of an angel.

Maggie lived a full life and we will all miss her immensely. Many thanks to the doctors, nurses and staff on 5 North at Royal Inland Hospital who made her final days happy ones. The heavens have welcomed a beautiful new angel to join their heavenly choir.

In her 87th year, following a very brief illness, our Mom passed away peacefully at Surrey Memorial Hospital surrounded by her loving family. Predeceased by her husband Paul Mahara in 2004, she will be dearly missed by her seven children, Kenneth (Lynn Jarvis), Dawn, Dale, Star (Martin Gerstmar), Mark (Andrea), Paula (Mark Solari) and Patrick (Christina); her six grandchildren that she never tired of talking about, John-Paul (Maggie Ollek) and Rheanne Lancaster, David and Dana Solari, and Natalie and Liam Mahara; her siblings, David and Ruby Gagné and Madaline Kennedy; her many nieces and nephews; her friends; and her second “family”, the residents and staff of the Kiwanis Care Centre in New Westminster.

Gwyn was born and raised in Kamloops, BC, the third of nine children. She had a happy childhood - swimming in the Thompson River, helping care for her younger siblings, and later, attending dances with her older sister where Gwyn was usually the belle of the ball. After high school she completed a commercial certificate and worked as a secretary until she was old enough to enter Royal Inland Hospital School of Nursing. An excellent nursing student, she graduated in May 1951 with her RN. It was during her training that she took care of a handsome young patient named Paul, who won her heart and so began a long and successful marriage. Gwyn was committed to the nursing profession, working as a TB Control nurse at the Willow Chest Centre in Vancouver

Samantha was born on March 3, 2010 into a large blended family; she has always been surrounded by lots of love. Our Super Sam had many passions in her life, which included playing with her friends and sisters, as well as riding horses, playing superheroes and princesses, and building lego. In July 2014, Samantha was diagnosed with aggressive leukemia.

In two years, she went through 13 rounds of aggressive chemotherapy, radiation and a bone marrow transplant. She faced every challenge with bravery and grace. In our hearts, cancer did not win this battle. Sam lived her life with passion. She embraced every moment of joy and happiness, even when she was faced with the biggest battles in her life. Samantha touched the lives of many people.

Mom was a constant reader, a skilled cribbage player, and a great sports fan. She loved to watch hockey, golf, curling and tennis on TV. She was an avid golfer, first as a member of the Bellingham Golf and Country Club, and later, the Richmond Country Club where she was part of a women’s team, the “Belle Hers”. Mom and Dad also travelled many times to play on courses in a variety of sunny locations in the USA. Over the years she won many tournaments and enjoyed reminding people that she had more trophies than her husband.

The family wishes to thank the professional and caring staff at Surrey Memorial Hospital who provided exemplary care to her and to us, especially the nurses on 3-South Surgical Pod 2 who kept her comfortable to the end. Douglas Brian Byres On April 16, 2016, two months after his 80th birthday, Douglas Brian Byres died at Royal Inland Hospital, Kamloops, BC after a brief illness. Doug is survived by his wife of nearly 59 years Eva, daughters Nicole and Brianna, son Ron, and grandchildren Nicholas, Alex, Max, Hannah and Sophia.

Doug spent most of his working life teaching math and science in Trail, Prince George, Dawson Creek, Kamloops and Macau. He had many interests over the years including skiing, fishing, golfing, hunting, swimming and flying small aircraft. Doug’s many friends and family will miss his laughter and jokes. Doug was a happy man, who adored his family. He said that his wife, children and grandchildren were the best things that had ever happened to him.

Obituaries & In Memoriam Christine Patricia Metzner (nee Thwaites) 1940 - 2016 Christine passed away unexpectedly in her sleep in the early morning hours of Monday, April 4, 2016.

She is predeceased by her husband Melvin, son Ashley, Mum Nelly, sister Enid, inlaws Erika and Glenn, and great-grandson Axel. She is survived by her partner of 16 years Dale Monks, his four children, her children Christopher (Beth) and Jennifer (Joe), fifteen grandchildren, one great-grandchild, five sisters, extended family and dear friends.

Christine sailed to Canada from England in 1957 where she met and married Melvin. They moved to Kamloops in 1977, where she co-owned/ran Fat Mel’s Pandas Pizza and Fat Mel’s Does Italian.

She enjoyed gardening, sewing and crocheting, was passionate about cooking and loved traveling, with frequent trips to the Hawaiian Islands, and in their later years, “trucking” across North America with Dale.

We fondly remember Christine for her spunk and no-nonsense attitude.

We miss her deeply.

Margaret Doris Davy With great sadness Margaret Doris Davy passed away peacefully in Kamloops on April 22, 2016 at the Gemstone Retirement Home at the age of 82. She was surrounded by family in her final moments.

Mom is survived by her sons Darrel (Signe) of Kamloops, Graham (Marg) of Mission, and Ken of Camrose, Alberta. She is also survived by numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Mom was born on June 9, 1933. Her most enjoyable job was working at the Dairy Queen for many years until her retirement.

Mom had infectious smile, a gentle demeanor and a heart of gold. She was loved by everybody! Her grandchildren, her flower garden and her little silver car were some of her most favorite things.

A special thanks to the staff at Ponderosa Lodge and Gemstone Retirement Home for their loving care of Mom. A special thank you to Sharon for her compassionate care for Mom. There will be no service as per Mom’s request.

The beautiful lavender fields in heaven have a new admirer as Carolyn passed away peacefully on April 13th, 2016 after a very brief battle with cancer.

She is survived by her brother John (Carrie), sister Sharon (Bernie). Her daughters Katherine (Laurence), Allison and son Micheal, grandchildren Valentine (Jess), Matthew, Sydney and Bailey, nieces Amy and Christine (Barry), nephews Curtis (Gillian), Tyler, Emerson and Evan, great-niece Kayleigh and great-nephew Morgan and great-grandchildren Angel, Alexander, Madison and Marley.

Carolyn taught elementary children for a number of years in Surrey and also in many other districts. She spoke very fondly of all her former students and their antics. She was also featured in the magazine National Geographic during her time teaching in the Yukon.

As a lover of history, she enjoyed collecting antiques and finding out the amazing stories behind some of her greatest finds. She always had a tidbit of information to share about her newest acquisition.

Over the years she enjoyed traveling to many destinations. Among her favorites were Hawaii and Paris. For years after her trip to Paris, she talked of longing for a fresh croissant and coffee while people watching at some quaint little cafes.

Her life contained many companions; the fur kind! She had an affinity for animals. She was a great lover of her dogs over the years. From tough, spunky Scotties and Westies to her final companion Billy the Boston Terrier.

Carolyn will forever be in our hearts and minds, she taught us all a great many lessons. She will be greatly missed by her many friends and family members.

Olivia was born in Milk River, Alberta moving to Chase Creek in 1946. Olivia worked in Edmonton and then moved to Kamloops to be with her father when he became ill, remaining here for the last years of her life. She spent many years volunteering at the Overlander Hospital where she spent her final couple of years.

She was a beautiful lady, a joy and inspiration to all who knew her. She will always be remembered by her beautiful smile and her caring and helpful attitude toward those she met. She was a firm believer in volunteering and charitable acts, sponsoring a child from World Vision.

Olivia is predeceased by her parents Harold and Dorothy Grey and her sister Beth Pryhitko, her brother-in-law Ray Deleeuw and her great niece Rosanne Deleeuw.

Allan Moritz Sr. of Kamloops, BC passed away on April 25th, 2016 at 89 years of age. He is survived by his loving soul mate, fishing partner and wife Helen of 62 years, as well as his children Patti Moritz, Shelley Kimberly, Elaine Dawson, Allan Moritz Jr. and his beloved dog Jaydee all of Kamloops, BC, grandchildren Ryan, Niki, Paige, Brienne, Celestine, Clarissa and Elijah and great-grandchildren Andrew, Alex, Paige, Rowan and Samaya.

He also leaves to cherish his memory a brother Dennis Moritz and a sister Pearl Rieger.

Allan was predeceased by his grandchildren Stephanie, Whitney and Daniel.

He grew up on the family farm and as a young man worked briefly in Ontario before moving to BC and started as a heavy duty equipment operator. Allan later returned to mining and ran the first load of oar through the crusher at Bethlehem, which was the first mine to start at Highland Valley. He was the then a dump supervisor at Lornex, while building Moritz’s Cabins in Cache Creek.

Allan began placer mining, during which time he, his son and Dave Dawson found the Lost Yellow Line Tunnel, which is now a family secret. Allan worked at Blackdome until his retirement. Allan kept his family fed from fishing, hunting, gardening, making sausage and sauerkraut. He was a mechanic, carpenter, butcher, musician and a family man. Allan had a special gift with animals and nature since he was a young man.

He lived a long full life and will be missed and forever loved by all his family.

Gray is also an avid photographer and volunteers at a senior volunteer level with the Canadian National Institute for the Blind, which has been instrumental in helping him cope with legal blindness since birth.

Coincidentally, Gray and spouse Kathie were married at St. Paul’s 29 years ago as her parents were longtime residents in the city and the cathedral parish.

Delta deal — but Bombardier still wants aid THE CANADIAN PRESS

MIRABEL, Que. — Bombardier received a major boost yesterday after Delta Air Lines agreed to buy up to 125 CSeries planes, a blockbuster deal that would be the largest for the troubled passenger jet program.

But Alain Bellemare, CEO of the Montrealbased aerospace manufacturer, was quick to dismiss any suggestion the agreement could diminish the need for federal assistance, saying he remains hopeful Ottawa will come through with its US$1billion request.

“We would welcome the participation of the federal government to add financial flexibility to what we’re doing in terms of the CSeries, but also our ability to keep investing in aerospace in the future, right here in Canada,’’ Bellemare said.

Delta has placed a firm order for 75 CS100 aircraft with options for an additional 50 more.

Based on the list price, the firm order is valued at approximately US$5.6 billion, Bombardier said.

Delivery of the aircraft to Delta, one of the largest airlines in the world, is expected to begin in 2018.

“This is a big win,’’ Bombardier CEO Alain Bellemare said earlier during a conference call with investors.

Ed Bastian, Delta’s incoming CEO, said Quebec’s support of US$1 billion to the CSeries program was essential in his company’s decision to purchase the planes.

“It gave us a lot of confidence to be able to step forward and make the decision,’’ he said.

“The last thing you want to do is take a financial risk around a big investment that we’re making as a company, not just the manufacturer is making.’’

Bombardier has been at the centre of political controversy in recent months and it’s banking on the success of its CSeries planes to revive its flagging fortunes.

Earlier this year, the company announced it was cutting 7,000 jobs

over two years, including roughly 3,000 in Canada, months after the Quebec government pledged public money for the aircraft manufacturer.

The federal Liberals are considering a request for another US$1 billion in funding for one of Canada’s biggest global competitors.

Bombardier employs more than 70,000 people around the world and exports roughly 95 per cent of its products.

The governments of Quebec and Ontario, both provinces where Bombardier has an extensive presence, have urged Ottawa to

provide financial assistance.

Bombardier has also earned the wrath of Toronto’s public transit system, which has seen its order for more than 200 streetcars encounter numerous delays.

Bellemare conceded that he is disappointed with the performance of Bombardier’s railway division, especially with the Toronto Transit Commission order. But he said he is confident Bombardier will resolve the problem.

“It’s not about the quality of the products,’’ he said.

“It’s about the challenges we have on the manufacturing side and

we will address them.’’

The CSeries is Bombardier’s new generation of aircraft for commercial airlines and has been in development for more than a decade as an alternative to smaller models of passenger jets built by rivals Boeing and Airbus, two companies that also receive hefty state support.

The aircraft is about two years behind schedule and at least US$2 billion over budget.

The Delta order came as Bombardier, which keeps its books in U.S. dollars, reported a first-quarter loss attributable to share-

holders of US$161 million or seven cents per share.

That compared with a profit attributable to shareholders of US$98 million or five cents per share a year ago.

Revenue for the quarter fell to US$3.14 billion compared with nearly US$4.4 billion in the first three months of 2015.

The Quebec government’s first of two payments to Bombardier has been postponed due to unspecified issues including liquidity, according to Premier Philippe Couillard.

In reporting its results yesterday, Bombardier said with

the investment by the Quebec government, it has enough cash to turn itself around, but additional money would increase its flexibility.

“We consider that these resources will enable the development of new products to enhance our competitiveness and support our growth; will allow the payment of dividends, if and when declared by the board of directors; and will enable us to meet all other expected financial requirements in the foreseeable future,’’ the company said in its earnings report.

Bellemare declined to answer when asked

why taxpayers should pay for the restoration of Bombardier dividends, which were suspended last year.

Bombardier has signed other deals in recent months to sell the planes, including a letter of intent in February where Air Canada would buy 45 CSeries jets, with an option to purchase up to 30 more of the aircraft.

Swiss International Air Lines is scheduled to be the first carrier to put the plane into commercial service in July.

Bombardier will hold its annual general meeting today.

PUBLIC HAS BEEF WITH EARLS OVER OUTSOURCING THE CANADIAN PRESS

VANCOUVER — A decision by Earls restaurants to ditch Alberta beef in favour of hormone-free U.S. meat has prompted a swift backlash from cattle ranchers and online threats to boycott the Canadian chain.

The company announced this week it would become the “first restaurant chain in North America’’ to serve only beef with the U.S.-based Certified Humane designation, raised without the use of antibiotics, steroids or added hormones.

“Earls has been working toward this humane designation for some time as part of the company’s overall commitment to conscious sourcing,’’ the Vancouver-based chain said in a statement.

Certified Humane is run by U.S. organization Humane Farm Animal Care and is not connected to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, which has its own requirements for food labelling, humane handling and slaughter.

Earls said animals on Certified Humane ranches are “treated

with care, respect and dignity from birth to pasture,’’ while Certified Humane abattoirs are designed by animal-behaviour expert Temple Grandin, who specializes in “calm, low-stress environments.’’

The announcement incited anger on social media, with Opposition Wildrose party Leader Brian Jean and federal Conservative MP Jason Kenney jumping into the fray on Twitter.

Scores of social media users threatened to boycott the chain.

Earls said on its website it has always

used Canadian beef for its hamburgers and steaks, two of its biggest-selling items.

But as its commitment to “conscious sourcing’’ grew, it started searching for a Canadian supplier of Certified Humane beef.

“However, after months of trying, we were unable to source a federally-inspected, Certified Humane producer that could consistently meet our large supply needs,’’ the chain said.

Dave Solverson of the Canadian Cattlemen’s Association said there is no equiva-

lent certification in Canada, but there are many humane producers of beef in Alberta and the restaurant’s implication that growth hormones are inhumane is “misleading marketing.’’

He said growth hormones allow ranchers to raise leaner cows and produce more sustainable beef. Fewer acres of land are required because cows convert food into muscle more efficiently and are ready to be slaughtered at a younger age.

“It’s perfectly safe and I think there’s a humane reason to use it,’’ he said. “It’s so much better for the environment.’’

Solverson said he only uses antibiotics on his ranch when animals get sick. Beef cattle standards posted on the Certified Humane also allow antibiotics to be used to treat diseases at the direction of a veterinarian.

Solverson said he’s disappointed in the restaurant’s decision but doesn’t think it will impact the Alberta beef industry too badly because Canadian consumers trust local ranchers.

“There’s a high level of trust that we’re producing a wholesome product,’’ he said.

“I think [Earls’] sales might be negatively affected because

people possibly will boycott them.’’

The restaurant chain did not immediately respond to a request for comment, but it has been replying to angry customers on Twitter with a promise to revisit the issue when a Canadian supplier can meet its criteria and large demand.

The chain’s website says Earls has 64 restaurants, most of them in Western Canada.

Kenney, the MP for Calgary Midnapore and former National Defence Minister, tweeted to Earls that Canadian beef is produced humanely.

“It’s locally sourced, and employs thousands of Canadians,’’ he wrote on Thursday.

Earls responded, “We aren’t saying it isn’t produced humanely, supply meeting our criteria in Canada just isn’t available at this time.’’

NEW LAW TO STOP CASHING IN ON CRIME THE CANADIAN PRESS

VICTORIA — Serial killer Robert Pickton and other notorious criminals in B.C. will no longer be able to profit from their crimes.

Public Safety Minister Mike Morris says proposed legislation prevents murderers and others convicted of serious crimes from making money through books and ROBERT PICKTON: other memorabilia.

He says that if the law B.C. murderer published a book earlier this year. is passed, the province would be allowed to take revenue earned from publications by criminals and distribute it to victims and their families.

The legislation was prompted by the publication earlier this year of a book reportedly written

by Pickton, a move that drew condemnation from Premier Christy Clark and the federal public safety minister.

The 144-page book titled Pickton: In His Own Words was briefly listed for sale on the Amazon website.

Morris says the proposed law will apply to criminals convicted of serious or violent crimes, including murder, sexual offences, child exploitation, kidnapping, drug trafficking and trafficking in persons.

N.S. makes play for China THE CANADIAN PRESS

HALIFAX — Capitalizing on export opportunities represented by China’s burgeoning middle class is one of the keys to growing Nova Scotia’s economy, says Premier Stephen McNeil.

McNeil announced a new strategy yesterday aimed at increasing the province’s access to the world’s second largest economy.

He said there are no export or job targets included in what amounts to a broad expression of the province’s intent to increase trade.

“I think the potential is limitless,’’ said McNeil. “As we see the growth of the middle class in China there is a hunger for highquality product and we have high quality product.’’

China is currently Nova Scotia’s second largest trad-

ing partner after the U.S., with provincial exports totalling $420 million in 2015. The figure lags well behind U.S. exports at $3.75 billion, but is an increase of more than 50 per cent over 2014.

Seafood exports, particularly live lobster, have led the way, growing from $14 million in 2009 to $208 million in 2015.

The strategy puts the province’s focus on its competitive strengths in areas such as seafood, education, IT and tourism.

It identifies a need to strengthen relationships within the Chinese business community and to support Nova Scotia businesses which already have access to China’s market.

The province says it will also seek to generate more formal agreements similar to a memorandum of understanding signed with China’s education ministry in 2007 and like the recently signed ocean tech agreement

between Dalhouise University and Shandong University.

Kevin Lynch, vice chairman of BMO Financial Group, said a concerted effort is needed by business and government to continue to push into the Chinese market.

“It’s a lot easier to go as a broad-based business community. I think this [strategy] is basically saying it’s time for the whole business community to actually take on board China.’’

Lynch said China is open to new relationships and Nova Scotia is well poised to take advantage of that attitude.

McNeil believes one-on-one meetings are important to open the way for provincial businesses to conclude future deals.

He said his office is planning a trip to China in early September. It would be McNeil’s third trade mission to the country since being elected in 2013.

The third-annual

Shelter Voices survey from the Canadian Network of Women’s Shelters and Transition Houses suggests eight of 10 women’s shelters in the country have taken in a woman from a neighbouring province in the last year.

The group found

Anti-Flag waving finger at ‘fluff’ JESSICA KLYMCHUK

rt for art’s sake never interested Pat Thetic.

Growing up in Pittsburgh, where the collars were blue and the culture was working class, he learned art needed to inspire change to have value.

“Everything had to get work done,” the Anti-Flag drummer said.

“Music that was political and talking about change and doing something more than just the fluff of music was interesting to us, coming from Pittsburgh. Music without any passion, without that element to it, it’s not interesting to me.”

KTW caught up with Thetic as he was sorting through old pictures from the band’s early days.

To say Anti-Flag’s music is political would be an understatement.

In its 20 years, the four-member band’s activism has focused on anti-war messages, class struggle and human rights.

The punk-rock group publicly supports Greenpeace, PETA and Amnesty International.

It performed at Occupy Wall Street and its albums were pulled from many shelves when it opposed the war in Iraq following the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorists attacks.

The name AntiFlag came about in the early 1990s when the U.S. was invading Kuwait and Iraq and

politicians were doing what Thetic called “wearing the flag” and, at times, hiding behind it.

“They stood in front of the flag and said complete bullshit and lies that we had to follow along with and we felt as though that was problematic,” he said. “Just because you stood in front of the flag did not mean that we had to listen to everything you had to say.”

The band has been criticized for being anti-American, but Thetic said the message has always been about not following blindly, no matter where you live.

“Early on, when we travelled around, people in Canada were like, “Yeah, we hate the U.S., too,’” he said.

“Well, that’s not what we’re trying to get

at. We’re trying to say each of our cultures has this thing we want to stand up against.

Now I think people get that a little more.”

Crossing the border to the north also influenced their ideologies.

Seeing how similar Canada was to the U.S., they came to realize where you were born influences how you are treated, Thetic said.

And, while the Syrian refugee crisis and Donald Trump’s Mexican wall are timely examples, such “bigotry” has existed since the beginning of time, he said. It’s just aimed at different immigrant groups.

“Anti-Flag talking about these issues today is important, but these issues have been going on forever and they need to be talked about because there’s

always somebody trying to use this fear to gain power for themselves,” Thetic said.

He’s concerned about the American election because of what he called an “undercurrent of hatred” flowing through the Republican party coming to the surface.

But Thetic is proud the U.S. Supreme Court legalized gay marriage last year and praised Canada’s move to pull fighter jets

from combat in Iraq and Syria and our new prime minister.

“You just elected Justin Trudeau. He may be shitty six months from now, but we’re in the honeymoon period still,” Thetic said.

“We love Canada.

Every time we go, we think ‘Why aren’t we here more often?’ because it’s the good elements of American culture, but not all the shitty bullshit you have to deal with in the American culture.”

Anti-Flag has been neglecting Western Canada.

It’s been a decade since they toured west of Ontario, but most of this spring’s tour stops are in B.C. and Alberta — Kamloops, Vancouver, Whistler, Victoria, Banff, Edmonton and Calgary. Thetic insisted the band’s absence was due to distance.

“Those mountains are pretty big and our truck is not very solid these days,” he said.

For their return, Anti-Flag will be celebrating earlier records with the set list and honouring some anniversaries, but Thetic said they also plan to play songs from their newest album, American Spring, released last year.

ennis Hayes tried several times to finish the song.

It was important to him, but it was also difficult to complete.

“I just couldn’t finish,” he said of Your Love Always Brings Me Home, the song he finally finished to honour his sister, Kristine Zawaduk, who died in October 2013.

The South Kamloops secondary teacher said he knew what the spirit of the song should be and, every few months, he’d go into his

home studio and try to finish it.

The difficulty he faced came from the shared story the siblings had, one that saw their parents divorce when they were young, their father die when Hayes was 16 and Kristine was 11, that soared when his sister “married the love of her life” after high school, only to see her husband die in a 1993 skiing accident. Kristine was 26 and the mother of an infant and a toddler.

“She made the best of it,” Hayes said, and continued with her life, “not afraid to say what needed to be said and standing up for what is right.”

In August of 2013, Zawaduk was diagnosed

with brain cancer. Surgery followed, the tumour was removed and life continued, but Hayes suspects his sister knew she was terminal and didn’t want to burden her family with that pain.

“She fought a short, courageous battle,” he said. “She fought that good fight.”

Formerly a member of Blackdog Blue, Hayes turned to his music to find a way to honour his sister and, when the song was finally finished this year, he shared it on social media. Many encouraged him to enter it in the CBC Radio’s Searchlight contest, which he did, although the song did not make it to the regional finals.

work — even though, he said with a laugh, it had to be his voice “because I couldn’t find the Mellencamp or Freddie Mercury plug-in on my computer.”

Not winning the Searchlight competition doesn’t matter to him. He wants to keep learning and stepping outside of his comfort zone.

“It’s all about taking risks,” he said.

Hayes sees his music as a way to do that, to share a piece of himself through the words and melodies.

“I always try to take from people qualities that make me a better man, a better husband, a better father, a better friend,” Hayes said.

ASK A FELINE SPECIALIST FEEDING YOUR CAT – ARE TREATS OK?

Yes, treats are okay - provided they meet two conditions.

The first condition is that the treat should be a healthy food. Commercial treats such as Temptations are well accepted by many cats and can provide protein, vitamins, and other nutrients.

Check the label: the best commercial treats have a crude protein level of at least 30%. Cats can also safely consume small amounts of human foods such as cooked chicken, cheese, canned salmon, or fruits such as canteloupe. If your cat has a health condition such as a food allergy or kidney disease, check with your veterinarian on the type of treat that your cat can safely consume.

The second condition is that treats should not exceed 10% of your cat’s diet.

The majority of a cat’s diet should be a high quality, balanced cat food. As the average size adult cat requires only 200 to 300 calories per day, this means that only 20 to 30 calories should come from treats. One exception to this rule is a seriously ill cat that will eat only treats: better to eat treats than to starve !

Provided these 2 conditions are met, treats can be a fun and even beneficial

addition to your cat’s diet. Treats can be used as a reward when trying to train your cat to do an activity, such as allowing you to trim its nails. Some treats offer health benefits such as helping to prevent tartar accummulation on your cat’s teeth. Treats can also be a good dietary supplement in thin, elderly cats. Recent studies have shown that as cats age, their protein and fat digestion become less efficient and they may require 20 to 30% more calories than when they were younger, even though their activity level is decreased.

And finally, treats can be dispensed through a device such as a SlimCat ball or Egg-Cersizer, providing entertainment and exercise as well as a tasty treat. This is particularly important for cats living indoors, who enjoy using their predatory instincts to “hunt” the treats.

Green expo tomorrow The City of Kamloops’ inaugural Green Living Expo will be held tomorrow at Sandman Centre.

This free public event, which will run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., will focus on the promotion of environmental, social and economic sustainability in the community.

Exhibitors will showcase a variety of green living topics, from composting and solar energy to affordable eco-friendly products and services from local businesses.

There will be a pop-up farmers’ market and organizations promoting local food. Visitors can get their hands dirty in a demonstration garden led by

the Thompson Shuswap Master Gardeners. Makerspace will have their bicycle-powered blender in action and will demonstrate how to replace a broken mobile device screen.

In addition, a speaker series will take centre stage, featuring a range of topics, including how to grow your own organic fruit and vegetables and renewable energy solutions for on- and off-grid sites.

Want to test drive an electric car? There will be a Nissan Leaf and Tesla at the expo, along with an EV 101 presentation to answer questions.

I

nterior Health Authority is reminding parents and caregivers to make sure their children’s immunizations are up to date.

This timely reminder comes as pertussis cases continue to occur in several IHA communities.

Pertussis, also known as whooping cough, is a serious infection of the lungs and throat.

Pertussis can affect individuals of any age; however, its effects are most severe among infants who are too young to be fully immunized.

“Pertussis starts with symptoms similar to the common cold — a runny nose, sore throat and a mild fever. It then progresses to a cough that can become severe.

“In some cases, the cough may include the classic whooping sound and it may be accompanied by gasping, gagging, shortness of breath and vomiting,” said Dr. Silvina Mema, Medical Health Officer with IHA. “Young infants are at highest risk of complications, which include pneumonia, seizures, brain damage and even death.”

Immunization is the best way to prevent the spread of pertussis.

The vaccine is part of B.C.’s routine childhood immunization schedule.

A complete series consists of three doses of pertussis vaccine at two, four and six months followed by boosters at 18 months and at four to six years of age (kindergarten).

Because immunity to pertussis from childhood vaccines wanes over time, it is also recommended that a booster is given at 14 to 16 years of age (Grade 9).

“The BC Immunization Schedule is based on scientific evidence. It has been developed to protect children from getting diseases at the times when they are most at risk,” adds Dr. Mema.

“Because of this it is very important that children are up to date with their immunizations.”

Nick Robinson, a father of two boys believes strongly that getting his children immunized is an important part of being a parent and a community member.

“I believe everyone has a role to play to protect the community from vaccine preventable diseases and outbreaks,” Robinson said.

“I think there is a tendency for people to question immunization because they think the natural ways are safer but that’s not always the case.

Polio is natural, death from measles is natural — any risks from vaccinations are tiny by

comparison. As parents, we have paid close attention to the evidence; for us, it was a no-brainer to give our kids all the recommended vaccines on time.”

High immunization rates are the key to preventing diseases like pertussis from affecting our communities.

When most people are vaccinated for a disease, it makes it harder for the disease to spread from person to person.

This is known as “herd immunity”, which helps ensure those who are most vulnerable to diseases are protected.

In IHA, 68 per cent of children are fully up to date with all the recommended immunizations by two years of age.

Climate change is not incremental — it could spike

I

f you spend a lot of time talking to scientists about climate change, there’s one word you’ll hear time and time again, yet it’s hardly ever mentioned in the public discussion of climate change.

The word is “non-linear”.

Most people think of global warming as an incremental thing. It may be inexorable, but it’s also predictable.

Alas, most people are wrong.

The climate is a very complex system — and complex systems can change in non-linear ways.

In other words, you cannot count on the average global temperature rising steadily and slowly as we pump more and more greenhouse gases into the atmosphere.

It may do that, but there may also be a sudden jump in the average global temperature that lands you in a world of hurt.

That may be happening now.

“We are moving into uncharted territory with frightening speed,” said Michel Jarraud, secretarygeneral of the World Meteorological Organization, last November.

He was referring to the fact the warming is now accelerating in an unprecedented way.

2014 was the hottest year ever — until 2015 beat it by a wide margin. 2016 may beat that record by an even wider margin.

It was the hottest January ever, then the average global temperature in February was a full fifth of a degree Celsius higher than January.

That was a huge jump, since the average global temperature is an average of all the temperatures over the seas and the land in both the summer hemisphere and the winter hemisphere.

It is normally a very stable figure, changing no more than a

WATCH few hundredths of a degree from year to year.

But March was not only hotter than February — it was hotter by an even wider margin than February was over January.

Indeed, each of the past 11 months has beaten the highest previously recorded average temperature for that month.

Some people try to explain this all away by blaming it on El Nino, a periodical rise in the ocean surface temperature in the eastern Pacific that moves the rainfall patterns around worldwide, causing droughts here and floods there.

But El Nino is a local rise in temperature.

It does not normally affect the average global temperature much.

El Nino had not even begun when 2014 beat all the records for average global temperature.

It was a powerful influence on weather patterns for all of 2015, but climate scientists estimate it was responsible for only 10 per cent of the

record warming in that year. 2015 would still have been hotter than 2014 even if we subtracted the El Nino effect.

And it was far hotter than the last big El Nino year, 1997.

As for the frightening acceleration in the warming in the past three months, that has no precedent in any El Nino year or indeed in any previous year.

It could be some random short-term fluctuation in average global temperature, but coming on top of the record warming of 2014 and 2015, it feels a lot more like part of a trend.

Could this be nonlinear change, an abrupt and irreversible change in the climate?

Yes. If it is, how far will it go before it stabilizes again at some higher average global temperature?

Nobody knows.

Last year, the average global temperature reached one full degree Celsius higher than the pre-industrial average.

That is halfway to the plus-two degree level all the world’s governments have agreed we must never exceed, but at least we got to plus-one slowly, over a period of two centuries.

The plus-two threshold matters because, at that point, the warming we have already caused will trigger natural feedbacks we cannot control: the loss of Arctic sea ice, the melting of the permafrost and immense releases of

carbon dioxide from the warming oceans.

After plus-two, we will no longer be able to stop the warming by ending our own greenhouse-gas emissions.

Even at the global climate summit in Paris in December, there was still hope we might avoid triggering the feedbacks because the historic rate of warming would still give us about 25 years to work on cutting our emissions before we reach plus-two.

But if the current non-linear surge in warming persists, we could have covered half the remaining distance and reached plus 1.5 degrees by the end of this year.

Obviously, most scientists will not go this far in public, but they are very worried.

As Prof. Stefan Rahmstorf of the Potsdam Institute of Climate Impact Research told The Guardian recently: “We are in a kind of climate emergency now.”

I’m not a scientist, but 10 years ago, I spent almost a year interviewing almost all the world’s leading climate scientists for a book I was writing.

I learned all of our calculations for dealing with climate change could suddenly be swept aside by a non-linear event — and this could be it.

bove the shoreline of a sheltered cove stands a row of totems.

They lean, crumbling with age, but with still discernible details.

Carved more than 100 years ago, their faces stare out to sea and their symbolism reaches across the ages in a mystical way.

After decades of talking about visiting Haida Gwaii, Gary and I finally stand at the poles of one of the most sacred sites in the islands — SGaang Gwaay Llnagaay.

We have but a short week for exploring some of the natural and cultural treasures on this remote archipelago off the northern coast of B.C. The morning of our SGang Gwaay expedition dawns clear and calm — perfect for the 90-minute float plane ride south, over lushly forested islands surrounded by brilliant blue waters, to Rose Harbour.

After donning survival suits, we have a half-hour bouncy zodiac ride to SGang Gwaay, or Anthony Island.

It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and home to one of the best examples of a traditional coastal First Nations village.

Haida Gwaii Climbing to the top of Tow Hill is a must-do when visiting Haida Gwaii, off the northern coast of B.C. The island, a two-hour flight from Vancouver, is home to totem poles carved more than 100 years ago.

IF YOU GO The Haida have lived on Haida Gwaii since the end of the last Ice Age and their heritage dates back at least 12,000 years. Haida Gwaii is a two-hour flight from Vancouver. There are airports in Sandspit and Massett.

BC Ferries sails from Prince Rupert to Queen Charlotte City and the trip takes six to eight hours. Car rentals and accommodations are limited, so book in advance.

We meet Ken, one of many Haida Watchmen who act as guardians at the ancient sites during the summer.

He relates the legends of the animal, human and mythic figures while we wander amongst the mortuary and memorial poles of the village.

dignitary upon their passing and held bent wood boxes with their remains. It is said their spirit stays with the pole until it falls.

Many moss-covered mounds hint at poles reclaimed by the forest.

I stand on the beach imagining how attractive the village must have looked so long ago.

The row of mortuary poles fronted a line of cedar houses, each

with a frontal pole; all backed by the verdant forest.

We learn more about the ancient ways of life at the Haida Heritage Centre at Kay Llnagaay in Skidegate.

Each of the monumental poles set along the beach represents one of six ancestral southern villages.

Figures inspired by the natural and spirit worlds are carved on the cedar logs and the tops soar almost to the clouds.

In the carving shed lie partly finished poles and huge, traditional Haida canoes.

The rich smell of cedar pervades the air.

Most are memorial poles and many are worn and weathered.

We now identify common figures such as eagle, raven, bear and the mythic thunderbird.

Eagles galore perch in trees and on poles, stoically silent while ravens harass them with swooping dives and raucous calls.

Not far from Port Clements, we walk through the quiet, moss-draped forest and view the felled Golden Spruce tree.

The tree was revered by islanders and is the stuff of legends for the Haida. It was much mourned when it was cut down as a protest against logging.

There is not much to see of the dead tree, but the living ones along the winding path are humongous and filter the sunlight.

It feels like we are walking in fairy tale woods.

Our cultural experiences continue at a traditional Haida dinner at Keenawaii’s Kitchen. We sit family style at a long table by windows overlooking the water.

Appetizers include Sguu (dried seaweed), dried K’aaw (herring eggs on kelp) and Gilgii (dried salmon) artistically served on a scallop shell.

Almost everything Roberta serves is either caught, foraged or grown on Haida Gwaii.

The tangy wild

cranberry sauce is made from the berries she painstakingly picked one by one.

Young helpers from the village serve up crab, salad, salmon, venison, vegetables and dessert.

The evening concludes with some haunting traditional Haida songs, accompanied solely by a drum.

Fancy feasting calls for walking and the expansive beaches like the ones we see from the viewpoints on Tow Hill beckon.

While walking near the Tlell River on East Beach, one of the longest beaches in North America, we meet a local who says he often has this strand all to himself.

From where we stand, we cannot see anyone else but spy the far distant tip of Rose Spit. We could walk there along the beach but from here it would take at least four days.

As a parting gift, he hands me a handful of agates he collected on his walk.

For these and all our experiences this week, I say, “Haaw’a, Haida Gwaii.”
