Filming of the Power Rangers movie wrapped in downtown Kamloops this week. City staff reached out to peers in Vancouver for insight in how to accommodate such events.

While there were a few hurdles business owners had to overcome, Kamloops Central Business Improvement Association general manager Gay Pooler believes the majority of business owners downtown were supportive of the event, which she said brought an estimated $300,000 into the city.

When the City of Kamloops agreed to allow a film crew to transform its downtown into Angel Grove, Calif., staff looked to some outside help.

“I’ve never been involved in any filming of this scope, so I reached out to the City of Vancouver film office and sought their advice to learn about the best way to work with a production company,” business and client services manager Tammy Robertson said.

“They guided us through this.”

The Power Rangers shoot, which moves into other parts of the region after wrapping downtown, is among the first of its kind for Kamloops, Robertson said.

While the city doesn’t have specific policies for filming, it treated the production as it does other groups requesting road closures, she said, noting traffic engineers dealt with it as they would parades or other downtown events.

Emergency services and transit representatives were also involved in negotiations.

“We reached out to say, ‘How can we do this?’ Then we worked to reduce the impact with the production company as much as possible,” Robertson said.

She said the company behind the shoot paid closure permit fees and had a deposit with the city throughout filming to cover any expenses to city hall arising from filming.

Gay Pooler, general manager of the Kamloops Central Business Improvement Association, said the company also covered costs her organization incurred during filming, such as assigning Customer Care and Patrol (CAP) team members to act as a gobetween for businesses and the film crew during the shoot.

She said she feels the company did a good job of minimizing disruptions to merchants.

“Even when they’d say, ‘This block is closed to cars all day for filming,’ the second they were done, they’d open it back up,” she said.

Pooler believes the majority of business owners downtown were willing to accommodate the shoot.

“Even some of the people who are impacted directly because they’re at ground zero of filming, they’re like, ‘Hey, this is exciting,’” she said.

Between crews staying in Kamloops hotels, money spent hiring extras and other spending downtown, Pooler expects Power Rangers will be worth about $300,000 to the city.

Vicci Weller, film commissioner for the Thompson-Nicola region, said several businesses also earned shooting fees, including the Plaza Hotel, where some footage was shot out of hotel room windows, and Jade Garden restaurant, which had its interior transformed into a soda shop.

However, the filming hasn’t been universally beloved in the downtown core.

Carol Schweitzer of Dr. Love and Hemp City in the 500-block of Victoria Street feels she wasn’t given enough advance notice to re-schedule deliveries that were disrupted by street closures.

Schweitzer, who lives above her business, said she was also unable to leave her home during filming and thinks the city should have specifically notified residents in the area about the disruption.

“I want to be responsible,” she said, adding she already works to plan around other closures downtown for festivals and events.

“I don’t think I was sent enough communication.”

Robertson said the city chose to advertise the closures through social media and print and radio ads, as well as on sign boards throughout the city. She said the city began notification about a month before filming began, noting downtown residents weren’t the subject of special targeting.

“I respect that not everyone might know, but I think we did try to reach out as best as we could,” she said.

Robertson said were there to be another shoot downtown, however, she would like to find a way to emphasize how quickly closures can come and go during a shoot.

Pooler said her organization also sent out email messages and hand-delivered notifications, starting one month before filming.

Earlier notification wasn’t possible, she said, because discussions with the film company were confidential in the early stages.

B.C.’s health minister says he came away from a marijuana summit in New York City this week even more convinced pending legalization must protect young people and address public safety.

Terry Lake attended the April 18 and April 19 Cannabis Science and Policy Summit, where his daughter Stephanie, a PhD student, was a presenter.

(He paid his own airfare and hotel, while billing government for conference fees.)

In addition to the personal reason, Lake said with the legalization plan by the federal Liberal government, he wanted to know more about experiences in

U.S. states, including Washington and Colorado.

Canada’s health minister, Jane Philpott, said Wednesday the federal government will introduce legislation to legalize marijuana in spring next year. Depending on how that legislation is crafted, the provinces may have to come up with their own regulations, including on point of sale.

Lake said the message was reinforced by neurologists and psychiatrists at the conference that “marijuana can have really aggressive impacts on the developing brain.”

He wants to see any legislation make it much tougher for teens to obtain marijuana.

Informally, he said he’s been told by young people that under today’s

laws, it’s much easier for students to obtain pot than alcohol.

The Trudeau government maintains one of the reasons it is legalizing the drug is to better regulate it, including keeping it out of the hands of children.

Lake said another takeaway for him is a statistic that 80 per cent of marijuana is consumed by 20 per cent of people, something he said has productivity

and workplace-safety implications.

The B.C. Liberal government has appointed B.C.’s medical health officer, Dr. Perry Kendall, as a representative on a federal panel to study legalization.

A coalition of the BC Government Employees’ Union and private liquor store owners is lobbying to be the legal retailer of marijuana in this province, but Lake noted Kendall opposes co-selling alcohol and marijuana.

Lake said there may be a role for medical marijuana to take the place of opioids in pain management. He said he’s eager to see rules that will replace today’s “Wild West” of unregulated marijuana dispensaries that cannot accurately tell consumers what is in their product.

Motorists are urged to use the Halston Bridge to avoid delays as traffic patterns will be modified for Boogie.

Access to Mission Flats Road will be maintained via Summit Drive for the duration of the event. A detour will also be provided to Mission Flats Road via Overlanders Bridge to Leigh Road to Tranquille Roa and back over the bridge.

Fort Avenue, Larch Avenue and Baker Street will be closed to all traffic from Fortune Drive between the hours of 8 a.m. and noon, while all other local road access will be maintained throughout the event.

Residents of York Avenue, Kemano Street and Patricia Avenue will be temporarily delayed between 9:30 a.m. and 11 a.m.

Boogie participants can show their race bibs to bus drivers and receive free rides on local transit on race day.

The sad truth is that the most common words I hear from the motorists that collide with my motorcycle clients are: I didn’t see him.

tanding amid a barren forest of poles laid out in a grid and topped by cables, Joey Bedard interrupts a tour of his farm to take a call.

It’s Sanjay, from India. He wants hops, the cones used for centuries both to preserve beer and give it complex taste.

Sanjay is in luck: Bedard has hops. This year, from his warehouse at High Country Cold Storage nearby, Bedard estimates he will sell more than $2 million worth of the flowering plant from Hops Canada, his partnership with the Tk’emlups Indian Band.

The hops, in pelletized form, are sourced from seven countries and, in turn, resold all over the world. Customers are in South Africa, Spain and Chile and elsewhere.

“We’re trying to get into Poland,” said the 27-yearold entrepreneur who lasted two weeks in university

after graduating high school in Ontario before quitting to form a series of companies that led to his latest venture.

Hops Canada, a brokerage company that buys and resells hops, is paying the operating bills down on the farm — a field that features what Bedard calls a “million-dollar view, literally” — an investment in irrigation, equipment and labour.

The view is 220 acres of poles and wire beside the North Thompson River across from Westsyde.

Beneath them are 390,000 hop plants — making it the largest hop farm in

Hop varieties in the ground include Cascade, Chinook, Zeus, Fuggle, Centennial, Goldings, Mount Hood, Newport.

Canada and rivalling some of those in Washington state and Hallertau, Germany, the largest hop-producing regions in the world.

The company planted 65 acres beginning in March last year and planted the remaining 155 acres this spring.

According to a study written last year for the provincial and federal agriculture ministries, the demand for hops is exploding, lit by the seemingly limitless growth of craft beer.

Jan Zeschky, a beer writer for the Province newspaper, tallied 130 craft breweries in B.C. if the 28 scheduled in

2016 open their doors.

Many of those brewers will produce IPAs, hopheavy beers that are driving much of the growth.

So far, however, Bedard said B.C. brewers have not been in the forefront of customers of his brokerage. That may change when Hops Canada begins producing an estimated $2.5 to $3.5 million worth of hops by the time the plants reach peak production in three years.

HOPPING AROUND

Bedard has the soul of a farmer, the voice of a salesman and the energy of a

squirrel. While he grew up in a farming area in Ontario, his business experience is in contracting to build remote camps in Northern Alberta for the oil patch, as well as remote fishing camps on B.C.’s West Coast.

He created and sold a number of companies before starting Hops Canada.

He sold two-thirds of Hops Canada, which he started last year, to Tk’emlups Indian Band.

The band, in turn, provided capital to develop the farm.

With a two-year-old at home, Bedard said he

wanted to get away from remote locations and find a business base.

His original plan was to open a craft brewery, but the market is flooded with new entrants. That led him into interest in supplying those brewers.

Howard Campbell, a TIB councillor responsible for economic development, said the band sees a longterm revenue stream as well as permanent and seasonal jobs. Right now, the company employs about 10 people year-round, with another 15 to 20 seasonally.

The next phase of development for Hops Canada will see installation of a processing facility.

While hops can be sold fresh-picked, the vast majority are sold either dried or pelletized.

Pelletization is the preferred form for brewers, but equipment needed to grind hops and reconstitute them is expensive and the process painstaking: If they are overheated in the process, they

lose the essential oils and aromas prized by brewers.

“That’s the next phase,” Campbell said. “We will be doing a pelletizer.”

GROWTH AND BIG PLANS

Bedard is well aware of the history of hop growing in this province.

Hops are aggressive, growing 20 feet tall in a season.

Like any commodity, supply will eventually catch up with demand.

Bedard believes hop growers who will flourish in this province will have to be

large to provide economies of scale. Based on demand, Hops Canada can develop hundreds more acres on reserve lands.

The 220 acres now being utilized was fallow and has no history of agricultural production other than hay.

The company also wants to develop its own hop varieties through a selective breeding program. Some of the most highly sought after hops in the world are commercially licensed and protected, something Hops Canada wants to attempt here.

“That way, when all goes to hell in the market, they [brewers] still need that hop we can grow,” Bedard said.

It is also working with a commercial arm of Thompson Rivers University to provide chemical analysis of hops demanded by many craft brewers developing award-winning ales.

While the farm is tucked away and not visible from the valley bottom, those interested can taste it for themselves by tipping back an IPA at Noble Pig, which utilized the first year’s production of hops.

More than eighty years ago, Californian Harry Ord planted hops in North Kamloops — the beginning of what would become an agricultural staple here for decades.

Kamloops was one of the major hop-growing regions of B.C., alongside the major centre in Chilliwack.

A story in the Kamloops Sentinel from 1936 mentions “work continues at the experimental hop garden on the Tranquille Road . . . ” A kiln for drying hops, called an oast, was installed.

“The crop will be small but it is necessary to cure it this year to determine its quality, as a poor quality product is not worth marketing,” the Sentinel story said.

Ord was the first to establish hop gardens in Kamloops, according to records at Kamloops Museum & Archives.

Before coming here, he developed hop farms in Chilliwack.

But in 1952, Ord’s farm, called Kamloops Hop Gardens, closed.

Millions of motorists drove by the hop farm in East Kamloops, owned by Molson Brewery, in the 1960s and ‘70s. Remnants of the production facility near the South Thompson River is visible from the Trans-Canada Highway.

The great leap backward

.C. NDP Leader John Horgan distanced himself as best as he could from the federal party’s decision to dump moderate leader Thomas Mulcair and spend the next couple of years debating the far-left crackpottery known as the Leap Manifesto.

“It’s a document that I don’t embrace personally,” Horgan told reporters at the legislature.

“I believe there are elements in the document that make sense and there are elements that make no sense in British Columbia.

“So, we won’t be proceeding under any Leap Manifesto in the next 12 months under my leadership.”

Horgan didn’t specify what part of the manifesto he likes.

Presumably it’s not the part about tearing up Canada’s freetrade agreements, converting food production to local agrarian collectives or unilaterally dismantling our energy industry and replacing it with communityowned windmills and solar panels.

It can’t be the demand to stop all pipelines, because while the B.C. NDP doesn’t like oil, Horgan is in favour of natural-gas exports to Asia. In general, that is. He’s now on record with the federal regulator that he’s against the Petronas-led Pacific Northwest LNG project with a terminal at Prince Rupert.

The Leap Manifesto is the brainchild of anti-capitalist Toronto author Naomi Klein, with support from Greenpeace and the Sierra Club. Its campus-

VICTORIA radical cluelessness is perhaps best summed up by the format, which consists of 15 “demands.”

Here’s demand No. 6: “We want high-speed rail powered by just renewables and affordable public transit to unite every community in this country — in place of more cars, pipelines and exploding trains that endanger and divide us.”

This demand effectively declares all of rural Canada irrelevant. By even considering it, the NDP risks doing the same.

Here’s No. 11: “We must expand those sectors that are already low-carbon: caregiving, teaching, social work, the arts and public-interest media.”

And how will “we” pay all these state-funded ballerinas and bloggers? Financial-transaction taxes, increased resource royalties (until resource industries are killed off), a progressive carbon tax and that old standby from the Occupy tent, higher taxes on corporations and the wealthy.

It’s hard to tell now, but the NDP was created to give political power to industrial workers.

Horgan was asked if the party’s effort to win back industrial workers could be hampered by this potential lurch to the urban left.

“The difference between my hardhat and the premier’s hardhat is that my hardhat has union labels on it and hers doesn’t,” Horgan replied.

As this statement was being made, the B.C. and Yukon Building Trades Council was meeting in Victoria. Its president, Tom Sigurdson, would use that event to host B.C. Liberal cabinet ministers and blast Horgan for opposing Pacific Northwest LNG. In the 2013 election, thenNDP leader Adrian Dix made a mid-campaign decision to come out against the Trans-Mountain pipeline expansion. Since then, the NDP has opposed construction of the Site C dam on the Peace River. Horgan is in favour of hydroelectric power, you understand — just not this project at this time.

Perhaps the most stunning thing about the federal NDP’s fling with the Leap Manifesto was that it was staged in Edmonton.

It came as a direct rejection of Alberta Premier Rachel Notley, who faces the grim reality of an oil and gas slump.

Notley has promised a carbon tax and the end of coal-fired power generation, moves that no NDP government has proposed, much less implemented. Her own pretending-to-be-green party ignored and betrayed her.

Editor: I am so tired of the drivel that comes out of the mouth of Coun, Donovan Cavers (‘KGHM drives into PR ditch,’ April 19) and some other opponents of KGHM’s plan to build the Ajax mine south of the city.

They have so much negativity in their minds that they are unwilling to allow the process to go through the proper channels.

Their propaganda machine is impressive and is meant to scare uninformed citizens.

Come on, Kamloops, let’s support this project. It will be good for our

economy and employment picture.

For heavens sake, there are already two mines on our city borders.

New Gold runs New Afton west of Kamloops. The former Afton operation was at one time an open-pit mine and the mining site is where KGHM Ajax wants to build.

The former mine operated for a number of years with no ill effects to our community.

Instead, it contributed to prosperity.

Most people do not even know the mine was there.

I am so disappointed with this council. Imagine going to Quebec to look at open-pit mines when we have two right here, along with one that was here for years, but is now shut down.

What a waste of money.

If Cavers wants to complain about something, he should look at the pulp mill as Ajax will be much cleaner.

Let’s listen to the facts instead of the-sky-is-falling propaganda.

SHOULD NOT HAVE RUFF TIMES IN PARKS Editor: I am a pet lover.

I grew up in a farming community in Saskatchewan and we always had dogs, cats, rabbits, etc.

I live in Gleneagles and love to walk every day.

Nearby is a school, which is a wonderful place to take an early-

morning walk. There is a path above the property and the grounds are parklike. There are three signs posting that no dogs are allowed on the property.

On two occasions, I was met with an aggressive dog not on a leash in this nondog area.

At times, there are dog feces on the field (on

which children play soccer on the weekends and week nights) and dog feces on the path above the grounds.

My most recent encounter was with an 80-pound dog running at me aggressively while the owner was smiling and saying her dog wouldn’t hurt me.

She finally got her dog under control after I yelled that I was afraid of dogs (I am afraid of unruly dogs) and asked her to get her dog under control. It took her some time to get her dog to listen to her.

Please, dog owners, respect “non-dog” parks.

TRU board chair urges conversation DALE BASS

Government and society in general are demanding a higher level of accountability from the post-secondary community, said the chairman of TRU’s board of governors, the body that has a legislated responsibility to direct the institution and set its policies.

Paul Dagg suspects that’s one of the reasons faculty at Thompson Rivers University have expressed a lack of confidence in their administration.

There are 745 faculty members at TRU.

Of those, 363 took part in the vote, with 294 (81 per cent) voting in favour of a non-confidence motion.

Dagg said the vote taken by the TRU Faculty Association requires respect and action.

“The vote is important because a significant percentage of faculty expressed concerns,” Dagg said, He said the board he chairs will take some time to allow administration to work on improving internal communications.

However, he said faculty needs to understand the provincial government in particular

demands accountability for what it funds.

He said that requirement may also be driving similar non-confidence votes that have been held at universities across the country.

“We have to be respectful of the constraints government imposes,” he said.

With the decline in the number of highschool graduates, particularly in Western provinces, universities have to pay attention to that and work to recruit, retain and provide the best educational experience possible for its students, Dagg said.

TRU has robust processes in place for communication between faculty and administration, he said.

Eleven of the 20 budget committee members, for example, are faculty, while 22 of 43 voting members of the senate are faculty members.

Dagg called on TRUFA to not use the media to bring forward grievances “before engaging with any governing bodies to address the issues at hand.”

While 49 per cent of eligible faculty members voted, TRUFA president Tom Friedman said more than 300 of that total membership is

made up of contract employees who might not be as interested in expressing a viewpoint on ongoing issues at the institution.

Dagg said he was saddened specific administrators had been named in the vote, including president Alan Shaver, provost Christine BovisCnossen, vice-presidents finance Matt Milovick and advancement Christopher Seguin and associate vice-president academic Donna Petrie.

“Leadership is tough,” Dagg said.

“And we have to give them space to do that.”

FILE YOUR TAXES Low-income B.C. seniors may miss out on important benefits if they don’t file an income tax form, according to B.C.’s seniors’ advocate.

With the April tax deadline approaching, Elizabeth Mackenzie has reminded seniors that 13,000 B.C. residents were found in a national survey to have missed out on the Guaranteed Income Supplement for as much as seven years.

Once identified, seniors received retroactive payments from Ottawa.

“GIS is a key support for the lowest income seniors,” Mackenzie said. “These are seniors living on $17,300 annually or less; however, to receive this GIS, you must file an income tax return.”

Volunteer income tax clinics hosted by community agencies in B.C. offer free tax preparation. A list of free tax preparation services is available on the Canada Revenue Agency website or by calling 1-877-952-3181.

McLeod seeking Calgary feedback on assisted man banned death legislation from B.C. COURT

Kamloops-ThompsonCariboo Conservative MP Cathy McLeod will hold small roundtable meetings next week on Canada’s proposed bill on assisted dying in a bid to gather feedback before it is debated.

The Liberal party introduced Bill C-14, Medical Assistance in Dying, to comply with a Supreme Court of Canada decision dating from the previous Conservative government.

After the court came down with the order for government to pass a bill, ruling the current prohibition unconstitutional, McLeod sent a letter to every household in the riding to garner opinion.

“I had a really significant response, over 70 per cent of people saying we should go on a direction as per the Supreme Court,” McLeod said.

She also summed up ideas she heard and submitted those to the House of Commons committee studying creation of a bill.

Those included ways to protect vulnerable people.

MPs were given a technical briefing on the new bill.

In her meetings with small groups of constituents at her office, McLeod will reproduce that technical briefing before entering discussions and talking about some ideas for amendments.

Among those is a way for medical personnel to opt out of providing assistance to die.

The bill proposes allowing

medical assistance in dying only for those people who have a grievous and terminal medical condition.

It would not allow the practice for children nor for people with mental illness alone.

Patients can also not give prior informed consent, meaning they would have to be mentally competent at the time.

McLeod is still looking for constituents for the small roundtable discussions, which will take place in her constituency office.

“My office had a lot of calls,” she said. “It looks like next week will be focused on this.”

The Supreme Court gave the government until June 6 to pass legislation.

A Calgary man accused of committing sex crimes against a Kamloops teenager last summer has been released on bail, but ordered to stay out of B.C. Cory Richard Swain is accused of touching a person under 16 for a sexual purpose and sexual assault.

Both charges relate to a single victim and the crimes are alleged to have taken place on Canada Day 2015 in Kamloops.

Swain was granted bail in Kamloops provincial court on Wednesday, but ordered to put up a $2,000 deposit and stay out of B.C. except for court appearances.

He is due back in court on May 26.

Royal Inland Hospital saw an unusually high number of fentanyl-related overdoses yesterday, with two treated and released and two admitted to hospital.

Kamloops-North Thompson MLA Terry Lake, who is also the province’s health minister, said he contacted the media to get the word out quickly because of the number of people involved.

He said he didn’t know if all were found together or came from different parts of the city or the timeline

other than they all occurred during the morning.

The overdoses follow a warning in March after one man died and several others were taken to Royal Inland Hospital following a rash of overdoses on one day.

The man died in a parkade at Second Avenue and Victoria Street, where two other men were taken to hospital. Later in the day on Mounties were called to three additional overdoses.

Heroin and fentanyl were suspected.

For Bobby Jo Kowalski, BC Angel Dresses is part of healing.

Having had four miscarriages, she knows the trauma of pregnancy complications that lead to leaving the hospital without a baby.

“This is something I do to honour my lost babies,” Kowalski told KTW in a phone interview from Saskatchewan.

Kowalski is part of a team expanding a program that sees used dresses transformed into tiny outfits for babies who die in the hospital.

A group of volunteers collects old bridesmaids and wedding dresses, repurposes them into “angel dresses” — which are not always dresses — and offers them to hospitals to give to grieving families at no cost.

Kowalski said families are often offered a blanket or towel when they meet their deceased baby.

It’s not enough, she said, noting clothing helps validate a child’s existence.

“You’re not going to make

everything be sunshine and roses,” Kowalski said. “But to have that validation . . . that validation of this is real and you had a child that died.”

The program has already taken shape across the country and Kowalski said the next goal is to have it in every hospital across the province.

It’s already in place in Vancouver’s B.C. Children’s Hospital, in Campbell River and in Williams Lake.

For Kamloops, it starts with volunteer seamstresses Kowalski is calling upon to come forward and get the program off the ground in the River City.

From there, dress collectors are needed to pick up donations.

As for the dresses?

In Kowalski’s experience, once the program is operating, “they just appear.”

“The stories that sometimes come with these dresses,” she said.

“Some of these are so, so old, these dresses. We’ll get people saying, ‘This was my grandma’s dress and I know she lost a baby.’”

Angel dresses are for boys and girls and come in many sizes

— for babies so small they can only fit a pocket-like wrap to dresses and outfits that tie in the back to prevent disruption of tiny, delicate bones.

“We make dresses for angels,” Kowalski said.

The group has also become a support network to those who grieve because many who lend a hand, like Kowalski, do so to honour their own lost babies.

“If you’ve never been through loss, it’s difficult to know what to say or what not to say,” Kowalski said.

“When you’ve been through it, you have an idea what that person is feeling.”

Kowalski still feels the loss of her four babies.

“Do I still have moments?

Absolutely.”

“Do I still find myself short of breath when I see a mom nursing a newborn when that should be me? Absolutely.”

“This is what I do for mine.”

hris Balison calls it the Blue Jays Effect — the belief that Toronto’s magical run to the 2015 American League Conference Series has spurred the Kamloops Minor Baseball Association’s dramatic increase in enrolment for 2016.

Fifty-five teams with more than 550 players — one of the largest contingents ever for KMBA — will take over McArthur Island this weekend, with the 51st season of the minor baseball association getting underway tomorrow morning.

“Last year we had 48 teams,” said Balison, the president of the KMBA. “We’re at, I think, 561 kids this year and we see a lot of kids brand new to baseball this year.”

Tomorrow’s festivities will begin at 9 a.m. with more than 700 players, officials and volunteers parading into Norbrock Stadium for the association’s opening ceremony.

Games will follow, with the first pitches thrown out at 10:30 a.m.

All 55 of KMBA’s teams will host home games on McArthur Island throughout the weekend.

The recent growth of baseball in Kamloops has been staggering and it started well before the Blue Jays made their return to Major League Baseball’s playoffs for the first time in more than two decades.

Registration is up more than 25 per cent since Balison took over as president of the association three years ago — enrolment has grown more than seven

per cent since last year alone.

Retention levels have also been on the rise for the two seasons KMBA has tracked the statistic.

“What I’ve been calling the Blue Jays Effect — being successful last year — certainly helped in the younger divisions with kids trying baseball for the first time, but we also see kids sticking with it,” Balison said.

“I think baseball is really healthy in Kamloops.”

Unrelated to minor baseball but an indicator of that health, the

Tournament Capital will see a senior men’s baseball league get off the ground this season, too.

The upstart league, governed by the Kamloops Senior Men’s Baseball Society, is aiming to get play underway in May and is hoping to field four teams of 15 players for games on Monday nights.

Teams won’t travel and the league won’t compete with the Kamloops Sun Devils senior men’s baseball team. Instead, it will give players graduating from the KMBA and

the Thompson Rivers WolfPack — as well as parents and other players who can’t work a commitment to a team like the Sun Devils — a place to play.

“We’re trying to get those guys to stay playing baseball and that really does, and will, help baseball as a whole in Kamloops,” said league president Will Devick.

“If we can keep those guys involved, just to be involved in KIBT [the Kamloops International Baseball Tournament] and the other societies that are baseball-related, we’ll have that pool of people to access.”

The sunny ways of the Kamloops Minor Baseball Association haven’t extended to the Kamloops Minor Fastball Association.

KMFA president Deb Epp said the association is down about 25 registrants from 2015.

“It has slowly been going down for years and years, as many of the boys have turned to baseball and soccer, some of the girls are playing soccer,” she said.

The KMFA enters 2016 with 125 players.

Epp said fastball has lost about half its registrants in both the learn to play (fiveto 10-year-olds) and under-19 divisions.

Only one boys’ team will play this season and even it is struggling. The KMFA was forced to combine two age groups, with ages ranging from 13 to 16 years old — and still only managed nine players.

The health of the game in Kamloops is in decline, Epp said.

KMFA registration remains open until April 30 for both learn to play, as well as for the boys’ lone team. Contact Epp at president@kamloopsminorfastball.com.

There are two separate B.C. Golf Zone 2 Junior Tour events — tomorrow at KGCC and Sunday at Rivershore — and those who play both rounds are eligible to win the eighth annual Kamloops City Junior Golf Championships, with the best combined scores earning titles in their respective divisions.

The events are the fifth and sixth, respectively, on the Zone 2 tour schedule and at each stop golfers amass Golf Tech Order of Merit points, used at season’s end to help determine the team that goes to provincials.

The tour has three age divisions, bantam (14-and-under), juvenile (15 and 16) and junior (17 and 18).

Junior golf championships taking over local fairways this weekend

Jack Croucher has been chairman of the Kamloops City Junior Golf program for 10 years and, while it’s encouraging to see young talent such as

Cousineau and Niles, the picture as a whole is not as pretty.

“It’s been declining substantially for a few years,” Croucher said.

“There is a lot of effort going into growing the game, but there’s so

much for kids to do in Kamloops.

“It’s just not on the priority list for kids.

Things like hockey and soccer, they run yearround now. Those kids will play golf, but they won’t join a club.”

Croucher said the decision to piggyback the Kamloops junior championships onto the Zone 2 tour tournaments starting in 2015 was due to a lack of numbers in previous years.

“We attempted to go to the schools and invited school classes to the course, but it hasn’t really resulted in a huge increase overall,” Croucher said.

“At Rivershore, where I am, we’re pretty healthy. We have about 45 kids in our junior program, which is quite a bit larger than other clubs.

“There are maybe 15 or 20 at KGCC. About the same for the Dunes. Maybe a dozen at Sun Rivers. Very few at Eaglepoint. Virtually none at Tobiano. Mount Paul does summer camps.”

There are plans to run a four-event Kamloops Junior Golf Tour in July and August, with stops at Mount Paul Golf Course, Pineridge Golf Course, KGCC and Rivershore.

Eric Breitkreuz, chairman of the Zone 2 junior tour, said numbers are up slightly this year, with about 80 players patrolling fairways on the regional circuit.

It costs $35 to join the tour and another $35 to play in each event.

The two-day tour championship will be held at Gallagher’s Canyon Golf and Country Club in

Kelowna on June 4 and June 5, following stops at Vernon Golf and Country Club on April 30, Kelowna Golf and Country Club on May 1, Spallumcheen Golf and Country Club in Vernon on May 7, Kelowna Springs Golf Club on May 8, Salmon Arm Golf Club on May 14 and Talking Rock Golf Course in Chase on May 15.

Tee-off this weekend at KGCC and Rivershore is slated for noon both days. There are about 40 golfers signed up to play.

PGA Tour player Roger Sloan, a Merritt product, spent time on the Zone 2 Tour, as did MacDermott, and Niles is aiming to one day snare a golf scholarship, using the regional circuit to cut his teeth.

“It’s a no-brainer to host a tournament,” MacDermott said.

“That’s how I got my start. Anything we can do to contribute to the game and get more kids playing, we’re in.

“Hopefully, it turns around in Kamloops.”

The suspect took a couple of DVDs and a pair of head phones then left the store without making any attempt to pay for the items.

Broncos schedule released

The schedule has been released for the Kamloops Broncos’ 2016 B.C. Football Conference season.

The junior football team will kick off on July 23, on the road to face the Langley Rams.

Early on Monday, April 11th between 2:05 and 2:30 am, a female suspect was caught on video surveillance inside the Century Glass business on Victoria St. This suspect had forced open a window on the west side of the building, once inside, the suspect searched through the entire store.

The only things take were some food items and a very small amount of cash.

The photo is not of great quality but is some knew her she could be easily identified. The suspect is described as a Caucasian female, mid 30’s, dark hair that was pulled back in a pony tail and was wearing a light coloured jacket with a hood on it.

McGregor not done fighting pulled from UFC 200 because of the dispute over promotional appearances. White said McGregor was refusing to travel to Las Vegas for promotions ahead of another UFC card this weekend.

McGregor wrote he’s still ready to fight at UFC 200.

“I’m doing what I need for me now. It is time to be selfish with my training again. It is the only way,’’ he said. “I feel the $400 million I have generated for the company in my last three events, all inside 8 months, is enough to get me this slight leeway.’’

McGregor said UFC denied a request for a decreased promotional push and he wrote he would still be willing to attend a scheduled press conference in New York.

“I did not shut down all media requests. I simply wanted a slight adjustment,’’ he said.

UFC said president Dana White would not comment until a scheduled press conference today in Las Vegas.

McGregor’s coach, John Kavanagh, tweeted yesterday his fighter “rose again.’’

The mixed martial arts superstar is simply fed up with the grueling promotional demands that come with being a pay-per-view star. The 27-year-old fighter known for his over the top personality said “I can not dance for you this time.’’

McGregor posted on Facebook yesterday that he needed to focus on himself and not the massive hype that accompanies his megafights.

“I have become lost in the game of promotion and forgot about the art of fighting,’’ McGregor said in the nearly 650-word statement also posted to Twitter, instantly drawing thousands of shares, retweets and comments from fans.

“For USADA and for the UFC and my contract stipulations — I AM NOT RETIRED,’’ McGregor said. McGregor, at times profane and critical of

interviews he saw as pointless, said the “many distractions’’ led to errors in preparing for his last fight, specifically with cardio and weight.

McGregor has been training for a rematch against Nate Diaz at UFC 200 in July. He lost to Diaz in March, ending a 15-fight winning streak in which he surprised many fans by fighting 25 pounds above his usual weight of 145 pounds, where he holds a title belt. The rematch was set to be fought at 170 pounds.

McGregor stirred fans this week with a tweet saying he had decided to retire young.

That prompted UFC President Dana White to respond by saying McGregor had been

McGregor, who sits alongside Ronda Rousey as the UFC’s biggest pay-per-view stars, is still the featherweight champion.

McGregor added to his aura when he knocked out Aldo in 13 seconds at UFC 194 in December.

UFC fighter Eddie Alvarez wrote on Twitter that McGregor had “good insight on how an empire rises and then falls.’’

Alvarez said McGregor’s stand sets a precedent for future stars if UFC caves to his demands.

The 64-yearold, who pitched in the major leagues from 1972 to 1994, also told ESPN that Washington’s Bryce Harper “doesn’t know squat about the game . . . no respect for it.’’

“I think to the extent that you believe, and I actually do, that Bryce Harper is a spokesman for this generation, I suspect

that you will see more exuberance from our players on the field,’’ Manfred said yesterday during a meeting with the Associated Press sports editors.

“I think it’s a good thing. I think that to the extent that you’re trying to market to a younger audience, our younger players taking control of the definition of those unwritten rules is a lot better than some guy who’s 67 years saying I did it that way and you ought do it the same way.’’

Obituaries & In Memoriam Mickey Hunter Caldwell 1939 – 2016

On November 12, 1939 in the wild and untamed state of New Mexico, Mickey Hunter Caldwell was born to Ernest and Mildred Caldwell, being the youngest of four children. He grew up in the car business as the Chevrolet Oldsmobile dealership which was owned by his father.

In 1960, Mickey and Bettee immigrated to British Columbia in 1971 and together, with partners, bought Roche Lake Fishing Camp. They built a new lodge, opened a restaurant and introduced the first New Mexican food to British Columbians. The restaurant became well known and over the years customers became life long friends.

The resort at Roche Lake was sold and the Caldwell family, with yet another child fondly referred to as the “fall crop”, moved to Kamloops. Mickey’s next 30 years were spent in the restaurant business.

Mickey had a kind heart, generous nature and an amusing sense of humour. His utmost love was for his family and the wonderful people who worked and played with him in the restaurants, on the drag strip and at Roche and Sheridan Lakes abundantly enriched his life. His passions were for Chevy’s and fast cars, fly fishing, good food and at the end of the day ---a glass of fine red wine.

Mickey is survived by his wife Bettee, his children Stacy Ritchey Darcy (Joe Cerny), Michael (Rosalie Dewey), and Chelsye (Reid Tindall), his brother William K. Caldwell (Maxine) of New Mexico, grandchildren Alexandra Ritchey, Mickenzie Ritchey-Keller and Sophia Ritchey, Mateo Dewey, Devin and Sierra Caldwell, Kysia and Finn Tindall and friend of 60 years, Helen Emmons Jackson. He will be missed by numerous nieces and nephews, in-laws and out-laws. Mickey was predeceased by his brother Lincoln and sister Burdette. Footprints One night a man had a dream.

He dreamed he was walking along the beach with the Lord. Across the sky flashed scenes from his life. For each scene, he noticed two set of footprints in the sand: one belonging to him, and the other to the Lord.

When the last scene of his life flashed before him, he looked back at the footprints in the sand. He noticed that many times along the path of his life there was only one set of footprints.

He also noticed that it happened at the very lowest and saddest times in his life.

This really bothered him and he questioned the Lord about it. “Lord, you said that once I decided to followed you, you’d walk with me all the way.

But I have noticed that during the most troublesome times of life, there is only one set of footprints. I don’t understand why, when I needed you most, you would leave me.”

The Lord replied, “My precious, precious child, I love you and I would never leave you. During your times of trial and suffering, when you saw only one set of footprints, it was then that I carried you.”

Obituaries & In Memoriam Richard Engemoen Mr. Richard Engemoen passed away peacefully with his family and girlfriend Mitch by his side at home on April 16th, 2016.

Rick will be sadly missed by his daughter Kayla Lynn Engemoen, father Vern Engemoen, brother Randy (Sue) Engemoen and sister Shari Engemoen as well as nieces Kirsty (Kyle) Brewer, Shauna (Cam) Fenton, Kasha Bliss and Jayden, Kellynn and Hayden. Rick was predeceased by his mother Mavis Engemoen in 2000. Rick left behind many great friends that were with him for many years!

Rick was born on June 3rd, 1961 in Vancouver, BC and moved to Kamloops at an early age.

Rick grew up in the family business (Highlander Restaurant) until starting at the Pulp Mill and worked there for 20 years. At Domtar he found his happy place operating large equipment in the Chip Yard. Rick enjoyed time spent out on the lake in his boat and spending time with family and friends!

Roy is fondly remembered by his children Sandra (Chris), Gordon (Brenda), Pamela (Ken), as well as seven grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren.

Roy was born in Drewsteignton, Devon, England January 7, 1925 and moved to Canada with his family when he was only 2 years old. He spent his younger years growing up on a ranch in the foothills of Alberta just north of Lundbrick. The family moved to BC in 1937.

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Allen William Turnbull on April 17, 2016 at the Royal Inland Hospital of heart disease.

He proudly served his country during World War II with 122 Marine Squadron as a seaman on “G” MTB type boats both on patrol and in Air-Sea rescues. He maintained his membership in the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 52 after the war and recently received recognition for being a member for 70 continuous years.

Allen was born in Port Arthur, Ont. (Thunder Bay, Ont.) on April 8, 1929.

Roy married Alice in Mission, BC in 1949 then moved to Kamloops, where he was employed

by CP Rail until his retirement in 1985.

He is survived by his loving wife Shirley, daughters Brenda (Scott), Lorna (Phil), his two grandsons Kody and Brenden and a greatgranddaughter Solara.

He loved his family dearly including all the time he got to play and fish with his grandchildren.

Even as he struggled with dementia in his final years the sight or sound of a young child always brought a big smile to his face.

He was an accomplished guitar player and fiddler player. He played for many dance halls in his day.

He worked for Van Kam Freightways for 23 years.

Roy lived most of life in Kamloops on his property located down the Old Hudson Bay Trail, in the area know as Dufferin. He served his community as a Regional Director, an Alderman of Dufferin and then Mayor of Dufferin. He was also on the Mayors Advisory Committee when Dufferin amalgamated with the City of Kamloops in 1973.

Before moving to Kamloops Seniors Village he always maintained a big garden and liked working in his yard with his many fruit trees. Roy will be missed by all who knew him, for his kind helping hand, his genuine sense of humor, always being ready with a joke to tell and that piece of candy he would hand out at the end of the talk.

The family would like to thank all those involved in Roy’s life at Kamloops Seniors Village for their kind and concerning care they provided our Dad in the final years of his life.

It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Richard (Rick) Chesley Dunbar on Saturday, April 16th, 2016 at Royal Inland Hospital, Kamloops, BC surrounded by his loving family.

Rick was born in Prince George, BC to Frank and the late Trudy Dunbar on December 16th, 1948.

Survived by loving wife Laurie, daughters Tusha, Tarja (Craig), grandchildren Shaye, Brody, Jase, Ryly. Father Frank (age 97), siblings Marilynn, Carol (Randi) and Ron (Flo), brother-in-law Howard (Bonnie), sister-in-law Janice (Jim) and many nieces and nephews; mother-in-law Florence Hebner (Irwin) and father-inlaw Warren Wager. Rick will be sadly missed by his many friends as well as his favourite pets – Scooby,Tika and Shia.

The family extends it’s sincerest gratitude to Dr. Jill Calder, the ALS Society and the ALS family whose love and support was vital to Rick’s ability to carry on. Rick so appreciated the respect, professionalism, humour and kindness shown to him and Laurie on a daily basis by his caregivers.

Stephen Douglas Gittus February 17, 1910 - April 7, 2016

Born in Montreal, Stephen grew up in Calgary and Vancouver.

He joined the Canadian Armed Forces in 1942 serving in the Artillery as an Instructor with postings in Cardiff Wales, El Paso Texas, Korea and several military posts across Canada.

He retired as a Major from Valcartier, Quebec and he and his wife Iris settled in Sorrento, BC. He is survived by his two daughters Mary Jean Jacobson (Dale) and Stephanie Chrumka (Paul), seven grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren and his nephew Thomas Oldfield (Marilyn).

Stephen was predeceased by his sisters Dorothy McDonald (Hugh) and Edith Oldfield (Fred) and his wives Iris Costello, Elsie May Jorgenson and Mildred Battison.

During his long life, Stephen excelled in sports from football to curling. He enjoyed photography, boating on the Shuswap, studying Spanish, gardening and especially travelling by car, freighter or cruise ship.

He travelled around the world five times and took his last cruise when he turned 101.

His family wish to thank the incredible staff at Berwick and BRIO for their great care.

A farewell reception in memory of Stephen will be held at a later date.

Shirley Hutchinson born August 14, 1922 in New Westminster to William Colquhoun and Edith Fawcett, passed away at 93 years quietly in her sleep the morning of Saturday, April 16, 2016. She is now again with her husband Fred.

It is with profound sadness we announce the sudden passing of Barb Byette, of natural causes at the home she shared with her mother.

Sometime late Saturday, April 16, 2016 (or early Sunday, April 17, 2016) the angels came, and left us with wonderful memories.

She left her daughter Barb Byette, grandsons Jason (Dalyce) and Jack (Kirsten), great-granddaughter Sadie, step-great-grandchildren Brayden and Hannah. Her sister Joyce (Arn) Armstrong and sister-in-law Betty Humphries, many nieces and nephews shall cherish the wonderful memories of this fine lady, as well as those in Australia, England and Scotland. Predeceased by parents, brother George (Nell), in-laws of the Frolek, Giles and Hutchinson families.

Barbara Joyce was born April 7, 1946 at R.I.H, Kamloops, to Fred Hutchinson and Shirley Colquhoun. She was raised in the Beresford and Knutsford area, later the family of three moved to Springhill Dr. to be closer to school. She grew up in this area with her buddy Marilynne Piller and they shared many antics together, life was good.

Shirley came to the Kamloops area during the great depression as a mother’s helper, returned to New Westminster for a short time to work in a bakery, then back to the Kamloops area. In 1944 she started out married life as a dryland farmer’s wife, carrying water from the well, cooking for the threshing team, making butter, raising turkeys and eventually raising her daughter, sometimes being snowbound for weeks at a time, all of this within 12 miles south of Kamloops.

Barb leaves her sons Jason (Dalyce) and Jack (Kirsten), granddaughter Sadie, step-grandchildren Brayden and Hannah, her maternal aunt Joyce (Arn) Armstrong and paternal aunt Betty Humphries.

She also leaves many loving cousins of the Humphries, Hutchinson, Frolek, Giles and Armstrong families, relatives in Scotland and England and Derek (Jo) and children Jake, Georgia and Arjay of Australia.

It was a welcome move from the farm closer to the Kamloops for this city bred lass, and her days were full of caring for her niece Chris and home duties. When Barb’s schooling was finished, Shirley was offered a position with Woodwards’ grocery department as a “price checker”.

She graduated from KSS, was secretary at NorKam for School District #24, worked in Calgary, travelled to Australia, settled in Victoria where she worked for lawyers, became a good friend of Annie and had her sons. We were elated when she brought the boys home to Kamloops. She worked with Frances Barnett, later rejoining School District #24 and serving as secretary at Valleyview She enjoyed sewing and hand crafts, flower arranging, lawn and alley bowling, dancing, singing and Sahali high schools. She took up travelling, with her Mom, sometimes with one of us lucky ones, and socializing. She loved going for drives, especially to the Beresford, Knutsford and Long Lake to wonderful places, taking many pictures and returning with great stories. Many winter evenings areas. She was always up for a game of cards, or a cup’a. She travelled to many different places. were spent at Blazer Hockey games, with her Mom, sons and friends. She caught the family history She encouraged her niece Edith to pursue family history, long before online access was available. fever and was a very active member of the Kamloops Family History Society. She loved to read, and always had an interest in where the next book store was, she painted when she was younger Shirley had a long and varied life, a good life. Always a loving smile, and a welcome hello to all. We and took a course in carving wood. Everything Barb did, she did full throttle, volunteering with shall all miss her, but are so grateful she was so long in our lives. the “Cattle Drive”, and after Barb and Shirley’s move to Mayfair in July 2014 she threw herself into helping out with the front desk and organizing many things to do with the Mayfair community and residence.

We thank our Lord for the many memories that will be shared among the ranching families, former Woodward, Gillespie & Co., School District #24 employees, neighbours and friends.

Annie Wyrcimaga We are saddened to announce the death of Annie Wyrcimaga (nee Klochko) on April 20, 2016 at Overlander Extended Care Hospital. Annie is survived by her daughters Muriel Botham and Dorothy (Nino) Stroppa, grandchildren Carlin Favell, Nicola (Dan) Laidlaw, John Stroppa, Tony (Michelle) Stroppa, Tim (Toni) Botham, and great-grandchildren Ben, Maxine, Jocelyn, Moira, Maxwell, Jay, Ellie and Giannamaria. Annie Klochko was born on December 12, 1919 in Malonton, Manitoba on a homesteader farm to Ukrainian immigrants. In 1938, at age 18, she married John Wyrcimaga in Malonton, then soon after Annie and John travelled by CNR to Kamloops to make their new life. Their first daughter Muriel, was born in 1939, just 2 weeks before the outbreak of World War II. Their second daughter Dorothy, was born in 1942. Annie and John bought a double lot on McKenzie Avenue in North Kamloops in 1939 for $300, where they built their own home and where Annie lived continuously for over 60 years. Annie and John owned a number of North Shore businesses including Annie’s Grocery, John’s Menswear and Anne’s Tourist Inn, she also kept a large number of chickens in their yard for selling eggs. She also held jobs at the Royal City Tomato Cannery and Scott’s Motor Inn, and was known for riding her bicycle around the North Shore.

Annie was universally known to her family and friends as “Baba”, which is Ukrainian for grandmother. She loved to play cards (bridge, canasta, cribbage and King Pedro), knit, garden and spend time with her family including hosting a regular Sunday night family dinner for many many years.

She was very proud of her family and was always extremely supportive of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

The family would like to thank the caring staff at Overlander Extended Care Hospital and Dr. Mavis Holman for their many years of loving support and care of our Baba. A small memorial service will be held at a later date.

Pop superstar Prince dies at his Minnesota home THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

CHANHASSEN, Minn. — Pop superstar Prince, widely acclaimed as one of the most inventive musicians of his era with hits including Little Red Corvette, Let’s Go Crazy and When Doves Cry, was found dead at his home on yesterday in suburban Minneapolis, according to his publicist. He was 57.

His publicist, Yvette NoelSchure, told The Associated Press that the music icon died at his home in Chanhassen.

No details were immediately released.

VANCOUVER — Support from two nearby schools helped to convince Vancouver city officials to allow a nearly 20-year-old medical marijuana shop to remain in operation.

In a release, the BC Compassion Club Society says members of the board of variance voted unanimously to allow the society to stay open at its Commercial Drive location on Vancouver’s east side.

Duffy cleared on all counts in expense scandal STEPHANIE LEVITZ

OTTAWA — The oncetowering case against Sen. Mike Duffy collapsed utterly Thursday as a judge cleared the man at the centre of the long-running Senate expense scandal — and delivered a scathing indictment of the “ruthless’’ tactics of the Prime Minister’s Office under Stephen Harper.

Duffy celebrated with hugs from friends and hearty handshakes with his lawyers after Ontario Court Justice Charles Vaillancourt spent the better part of the day burnishing the controversial senator’s long-tarnished reputation.

Duffy left the court without speaking to reporters but his counsel, Donald Bayne, called it “a resounding acquittal.’’

“I would say that Sen. Duffy has been subjected for the last two and half, three years, to more public humiliation than probably any Canadian in history,’’ said Bayne.

When it came to the political operatives around the former

prime minister, notably Harper’s former chief of staff Nigel Wright, Vaillancourt did not mince words.

“Was Nigel Wright actually ordering senior members of the Senate around as if they were mere pawns on a chess board?’’ Vaillancourt asked.

“Were those same senior members of the Senate meekly acquiescing to Mr. Wright’s orders? Were those same senior members of the Senate robotically marching to recite their scripted lines?

“Did Nigel Wright really direct the senator to approach a senior member of an accounting firm that was conducting an independent audit of the Senate to get a peek at the report or part of the report prior to its release to appropriate Senate authorities or to influence that report in any way?

“Does the reading of these emails give the impression that Sen. Duffy was going to do as he was told or face the consequences?’’

After 62 days of hearings, Vaillancourt’s long-awaited decision was a systematic dismantling of the Crown’s case, starting with a raft of charges stemming from his travel expense claims and his residency declaration — an issue of direct relevance to Duffy’s eligibility to represent P.E.I. He dismissed eight charges related specifically to Duffy’s arrangements with friend Gerald Donohue, as well as a former intern and a makeup

artist and his personal trainer. Those charges are connected to some $65,000 in contracts Duffy arranged with companies owned by Donohue to pay for various services to other individuals.

“The circumstances of this case are a far cry from the usual fraud/ breach of trust playbook,’’ Vaillancourt said of the Donohue arrangements.

“I was not presented

with evidence suggesting expensive wining and dining, lavish living or pricey gambling junkets, or secret financial hideaways.

“Now, fraud and breach of trust can occur outside the aforementioned examples; however, the thrust of all of Sen. Duffy’s perceived misadventures was focused on Senate business.’’

Vaillancourt — who did not explicitly state why he was dismissing some charges and finding Duffy not guilty on others — described the senator as a “credible witness’’ and cast doubt on the Crown’s allegations.

“This case provided me with ample opportunity to assess the credibility of Sen.

Duffy,’’ he said. “He was on the stand for many hours; at the end of the day, I find that Sen. Duffy is an overall credible witness.’’

He declared Duffy to have shown no criminal or “sinister’’ intent — save perhaps for some opportunism — in filing his expense claims.

“Sen. Duffy believed reasonably . . . that all of the travel encompassed by counts three to 20 were properly expensed as parliamentary functions.’’

As he dismissed the charges related to Duffy’s travel claims, Vaillancourt said at one point that “the Crown has not established the guilt of the accused beyond a reasonable doubt.’’

Vaillancourt said

Duffy “did not ignore the gathering storm around his appointment,’’ but rather “sought out reassurance about those issues and was assured that he has no valid concerns.’’

He said Duffy “honestly and reasonably believed and relied on the advice he received regarding his appointment and his primary residence, and he acted upon it.’’

It was a long-awaited finale to a stubborn political drama that dispatched Wright as chief of staff, staggered the Conservative re-election campaign, embarrassed and diminished the Senate and laid bare the inner workings of a notoriously guarded and secretive government.

Researchers have suggested when Macbeth was first presented, Shakespeare knew it would be popular because, in the early 1600s there was a demand for new entertainment. Witches tended to attract theatregoers and the ruler of the time, King James I, had written a book on demonic rites of witches.

South Kamloops teacher Rhonda Diaper has always wanted to direct a Shakespearean play, choosing Macbeth because it’s one of her favourites and the plot resonates with today’s world.

“It’s timely because of the theme of greed in politics,” she said, “and how people will do anything to gain and retain power.”

It’s also a cautionary theme.

“Be careful what you wish for,” Diaper said, pointing to Lady Macbeth urging her

husband to kill the king and then losing her mind from the guilt.

The students have modified the script somewhat, choosing to present the major scenes and link them with a narrative they have written. Diaper estimates the play, with intermission, will last about two hours.

The cast has students from grades 8 through 12 with one shared with Westsyde secondary, which is presenting The Diary of Anne Frank. Watch for a story on that play in another edition of Kamloops This Week.

South Kamloops’ art department has prepared visual images that will also help move the audience through the classic story of ambition, treachery and betrayal.

It’s anticipated interest will be high because, had this First Folio not been published in 1623, the world might never have read the 18,301 words that make up what many superstitions theatrical people call The Scottish Play by William Shakespeare.

Tomorrow, theatre companies around the world will honour the iconic playwright on the 400th anniversary of his death by presenting a variety of his most important works.

In Kamloops, students at South Kamloops secondary will present Macbeth at Sagebrush Theatre.

While it’s believed the first production of Macbeth happened in either 1605 or 1606, at that time, Shakespeare didn’t publish his plays.

He would write one, it would be cast and presented and he moved on to the next work. It wasn’t until the 1620s he started to publish the works.

ohn Gilliatt has a busy weekend ahead of him.

He and his bandmates are driving up from the Coast this morning to lead workshops from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. with the school district’s best jazz students.

They’ll be back at St. Andrews on the Square tomorrow for more workshops, a performance by the students — one that is open to the public — from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. and then they’ll be getting ready for the fifth annual Music in the Round at Thompson Rivers University.

The award-winning musician said he discovered music when he was about nine years old and his parents bought a $10 guitar for him.

“I never put it down,” he said.

Four decades later, he’s toured the world sharing his love of rumba flamenco and Latin jazz, a passion that has seen him win Best Instrumental Acoustic Guitar Performance in the Music West Star Frets competition in 1995, Vancouver’s Unplugged Competition in 1996 and in 1997 was a finalist in Vancouver’s Global StarQuest.

In 1999, he released his first independent instrumental CD, Freedom, following it up with Peace in 2002, an album nominated for the West Coast Music Awards Best Instrumental Release in 2002.

His latest release, Beyond Boundaries, takes his music into

Opening for the band is local musicians Mo Jazz, composed of Graham Kay on tenor saxophone, Ray Nyuli on guitar, Grant Porter on piano, Buddy Rogers on drums and Ken Sell on bass.

The fundraiser at the Barber Centre on campus benefits the university and the Kamloops Interior Summer School of Music (KISSM), who share in the proceeds.

TRU uses the money for arts awards, said Colleen McLean, an events co-ordinator on campus.

Last year, the event saw $6,730 raised after costs were paid, of which $3,500 went to KISSM. The year before, the net proceeds were $4,854 and $3,000 went to KISSM. Kim Mangan, executive director of the music school, said it’s a good fit sharing the proceeds with the university because many of the students who attend the summer session come from TRU. KISSM uses the money in student awards to enable budding musicians who might not be able to afford the program

to attend.

Last year, she said, about 20 were sponsored through the Music in the Round proceeds.

Registration began for the summer session earlier this year and has been well ahead of last year’s attendance.

Mangan anticipates this year, the 38th for the program, will see a record number of students; her goal is 250.

Musicians who have taken part in past events like the venue, McLean said, and, with attendance kept to about 180 people, it becomes “an intimate affair.”

Tickets are $50, which includes wine and beer samplers courtesy of Harper’s Trail winery and Red Collar brewery, canapes and a chance to bid on silent-auction items.

Mangan is also moving forward with a new KISSM project, Whole Note, an initiative she says is designed to address arts at the grassroots level, supporting youth and music education and, eventually, expanding the educational opportunities with KISSM beyond the summer school.

She’s looking for partners and hopes to launch it in the fall, “investing in youth and showing parents the value of music,” Mangan said.

Gilliatt’s also a big believer in bringing youth and musical instruction together and he’s keen to work with the district’s music students.

Another production by Other Theatre Company The Other Theatre Company, which made its introduction to the city with January’s presentation of Cherry Docs, is going from skin-head Nazi murders to a lighter fare with its next production of Noel and Cole, a dinner and cabaret show on April 30.

Written by Tom Kerr, the script brings together the songs, quips and quotes of Noel Coward and Cole Porter.

Kerr, founding artistic director of Western Canada Theatre, has cast local actors and singers in the production, including Jedd Macmillan, Cameron Snee Terry Roth, Julie Harland and, leading the cast, Tina Moore.

Former John Peterson secondary theatre teacher Sheda Peterson is assisting and Dolores Kirkwood, who worked with WCT in 1978 as choreographer for Oliver is helping with staging the musical numbers; Bill Brown will be on

the keyboards.

“This mix of talent, this mix of different ages and stages of professional development, this kind of meaningful engagement and mentoring of emerging talent is the core of what The Other Theatre Company is about,” said Glenn Cairns, artistic director of the company.

If God exists, why are there natural disasters?

O

f late, the number of earthquakes and related loss of lives has been bone-nerving and heart-chilling.

Last week, backto-back earthquakes in Japan and Ecuador, in two disparate continents, resulted in deaths and property damages, with numbers still climbing.

I wish I could distance myself from the accompanying questions raised by such natural disasters on such a gigantic scale.

In some ways, it is easier for me to address human needs than to process such disasters theologically — to find reasons for mass death and suffering.

As the death tolls rise, questions gnaw at my soul: Why all this meaningless madness?

Is God telling us something?

On one hand, I wish I knew the final and definite answers. But that requires me to be God himself.

sibility, I can propose tentative responses with scriptural and circumstantial warrants.

The causes for unexplainable natural disasters are complicated since the perpetrators seem invisible and the purposes incomprehensible, unlike manmade disasters wherein we can identify someone or group to blame.

The Bible speaks about God’s judgment on sin through natural disasters.

The flood was related to human sin, as was the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah.

God’s righteousness in combination with his mercy and goodness calls for judging

The most radical event in early Earth history was humankind’s fall away from God. The mother-ofall-disasters put Earth under God’s curse.

Humanity lost immediate existential relationship to him in the Garden of Eden.

This Earth is not heaven and often feels like hell.

It is groaning, grunting and growling in futility. Our blue planet is still paying for humankind’s original departure from the creator.

That feature at fall alone comes close to the best biblical explanations for natural cataclysms.

Yet, death’s randomness remains.

Why do disasters seem so arbitrary and haphazard?

Why are “good” people affected as much as “bad” ones? And why are “bad” people spared?

The question of randomness brings us to the demonic factor in executing natural disasters.

Natural disasters are not “acts of God,” like the insurance industry would have us believe, often by the extent of their fury. They could just as easily be “acts of Satan.”

We can underestimate Satan’s power, but anything he does is under the determinative control of God. God’s common grace keeps Earth from complete destruction.

The triumph of Jesus over all the principalities and powers at the cross (Colossians 2:15) prevents it from obliteration.

Satan, through natural disasters and other activities, attempts to tear into the Earth.

Humanity’s only eternal security and earthly sustenance at the present is God. One day, after sin refills God’s nostrils and he removes his people, this Earth will destruct.

A newly formed community group opposing the Ajax mine is taking to two wheels to get its message out about the proposed copper and gold mine south of Aberdeen.

Kamloops Code Blue will host a bike ride along Goose Lake Road Sunday, May 1.

And, according to some comments on the Support Ajax Mine Facebook page, mine opponents may have company.

“I think we should all slap a “SUPPORT AJAX MINE” on our

tailgates, drive up there and dust them out,” one commenter posted.

Another added: “Sounds like a great route for a quad ride or dirt bike ride. Wonder if the antis are against them joining in?”

Organizer Richard Boyce said the goal of the event is being held to raise awareness about the impacts of the project, now under environmental review by the federal and provincial governments.

“It’s in the area where Ajax is going to be and you’re no longer going to have access to once the mine is up and operational,” he said.

It appears property owners in Upper Clearwater will have the opportunity to vote on the future of funding for the Upper Clearwater Community Hall.

At issue is the fact a grant-in-aid derived from property taxes is being used to prop up a privately owned hall that some residents say is not publicly available — to the tune of $5,000 annually.

Surveyed earlier this year, a majority of residents in the area voted in favour of the Thompson-Nicola Regional District conducting a public-assent process that could see the elimination of the grant-in-aid service that provides money annually to hall owner Upper Clearwater Farmers’ Institute for operation of

the facility.

The question — “Would you like the Upper Clearwater Community Hall grant-in-aid service to be eliminated?” — resulted in 30 property owners responding yes and 27 voting no.

Seventy-seven surveys were sent out and 57 were returned before the April 15 deadline, a response rate of 74 per cent.

Given the results of the survey, which are non-binding, TNRD director Carol Schaffer is expected to ask the TNRD board at its April 28 meeting to authorize the public-assent process through formal petition.

Issues surrounding the community hall first came to the TNRD’s attention in January, when a delegation representing the Upper Clearwater Farmers’ Institute gave a presentation at the board’s

regular meeting.

Another delegation, representing members of the Upper Clearwater community and represented

by Shane McGrath, detailed a tumultuous history between the institute and property owners in the area.

McGrath requested the board begin a new public-assent process, saying the 2004 process, which originally established the grant-in-aid service, had created a deep rift in the community, causing relationships in the area to become increasingly acrimonious.

Prior to the issue coming to the TNRD board, an FOI request by residents of Upper Clearwater revealed the 2004 process was flawed and included a major privacy breach.

Schaffer, who represents Area A (Wells Gray Country), which includes Upper

Clearwater, painted a picture of a tenuous relationship between the institute and community members when she spoke at TNRD’s January meeting.

Dating back to 2014, she received reports of voter intimidation at institute meetings, fears for safety by hall users, as well as vandalism to vehicles on site.

Nick Frost, who spoke on behalf of the Upper Clearwater Farmers Institute in January, said the hall is open to anyone who wishes to use it and that it may cease to operate without the yearly infusion of tax money.

About $92,000 in gas-tax revenue has been spent on renovations to the hall.

The $5,000 grant-inaid equates to a tax of about $40 per year for the average-assessed property in the Upper Clearwater community.

Job-related deaths commemorated Family, friends, workers, employers and labour councils will commemorate those who died because of their job on Thursday, April 28.

More than 25 ceremonies are being held throughout B.C. in honour of the annual Day of Mourning, which was created by The Canadian Labour Congress in the 1980s.

Canada was the first country to honour those killed as a result of their job and today the day is celebrated around the world.

In 2015, there were 122 work-related deaths in the province, 72 of which were caused by occupational disease primarily from exposure to asbestos.

Fifty deaths were caused by traumatic injuries.

In the Thompson-Nicola Regional District, there were two-work related deaths.

In Kamloops, the Day of Mourning will be held at St. Andrew’s on the Square, 159 Seymour St., at 6 p.m.

Presentations will include: Jim Waldie of the Kamloops and District Labour Council, Doug Bates, manager of client service for WorkSafeBC, and Mark Johnson, who was injured as a young worker.

Myth 2 – Atheism requires faith

Atheism does not require faith.

Faith is belief that is disproportionate to the best currently available evidence.

There is no reasonable evidence to suggest supernatural gods exist and there is a lot of reasonable evidence to suggest humans invented idea of supernatural gods.

Myth 3 – Atheists can’t disprove god

There is no onus of proof on atheists to disprove god.

The onus of proof is on a person who is making an assertion to justify that assertion.

Most atheists simply live on the basis they have no sufficient reason to believe god exists, in the same way most religious people live their lives on the basis they have no sufficient reason to believe gods worshipped by other religions exist.

However, if an atheist asserts there are no gods and asserts there is no personal intervening god with whom humans can have relationships, that atheist can reasonably argue such an assertion is proportionate to the best currently available evidence.

Myth 4 – We need religion for morality

Religion influences morality, but we do not need religion for morality.

And religion can influence morality in

good and bad ways.

The Christian Bible includes good moral ideas, such as love thy neighbour as thyself and the story of the good samaritan.

It also contains bad moral ideas, such as you should stone a man to death for gathering sticks on the Sabbath or stone a woman to death for not being a virgin on her wedding night.

The Qur’an includes good moral ideas, such as being good to the poor and not having compulsion in religion.

It also contains bad moral ideas, such as a man can beat his wife in certain circumstances, a woman’s inheritance and testimony being half a man’s, and you should cut off the hands of thieves.

However, religious people address these differences, the very fact they notice the difference shows they are applying their own morality to their religious texts, not getting their morality from their religious texts.

Religion enables people to do both morally good things and morally bad things, while believing they are doing morally good things.

Myth 5 – We need religion for cultural values

Religion influences cultural values, but we do not need religion

for cultural values.

And religion can influence cultural values in both good and bad ways.

The World Values Surveys, the largest ever cross-national survey of social change, has been conducted in several waves since 1990, in more than 80 countries spanning all six inhabited continents, by a network of social scientists at leading universities around the world.

It has found poverty and wealth, and religion and secularism, are the main factors influencing cultural values around the world.

The influence of poverty and wealth can be measured on a scale of individuals moving from survival values to self-expression values.

The influence of religion and secularism can be measured on a scale of societies moving from traditional religious values to secular-rational values.

Personal survival values are highest in Africa and ex-communist countries, and personal self-expression values are highest in Protestant Europe and English-speaking countries.

B

oth hands are clasped around his chubby belly and between his wide-spread legs is an impressive body part that would delight any demi-God. Although early artisans once removed this appendage, today his entire image stands visibly intact and is even minted on a special coin.

Tangaroa, the Maori guardian of the ocean, is a well-known deity of the Cook Islands and is one of the first carved artifacts we encounter during our recent Rarotonga experience.

The Cook Islands are sprinkled over 2 million kilometers of the South Pacific, and though just west of Tahiti and south of Hawaii, they are idyllically removed from any commercialized bustle. Rarotonga is the queen bee of them all, and during our visit we discover how her roots entwine with present day treasures.

The award-winning cultural village sprawls over the lush inland property just seven kilometers from the island’s vibrant hub of Avarua, and beneath Polynesian-style amphitheatres, knowledgeable natives reveal historical tid-bits.

Lara, a brown eyed beauty, wearing a full-faced smile and fragapani behind one ear, begins our journey back in time.

“Nobody’s really sure where our ancestors originated from, but we do know that this little fellow was the

fisherman’s God for good luck,” she shares, while proudly cradling the wellendowed Tangoroa.

We discover that the first recorded sight of a Cook Island was by Alvaro de Mendana, a Spanish chap, way back in 1595.

Exploration in the area remained dormant until 1773, when the famed Captain James Cook came along, and although this well-known explorer never set foot on Rarotonga, the entire chain adopted his name.

“Raro” was actually discovered by Fletcher Christian, a first mate mutineer, soon after Captain Bligh and his boys were sent adrift following the infamous mutiny.

Lara wraps up the condensed Cook history lesson by sharing the spiritual movement that took place in the 1820’s.

“Polynesian missionaries successfully transformed the population of angry cannibals to Christians,” she informs, “and all in less than a year’s time.” Now that’s conversion!

Sunday remains a day of rest, and church continues to be a cornerstone in Cook Island culture today.

Although there are varied denominations, 70 percent of the population attends Presbyterian services.

And as we had discovered the day before, a visit to one of these Sabbath sanctuaries is well worth the visit.

Initially the set-up appeared pretty much apropos.

From a pedestal platform the Reverend delivered the sermon and although I couldn’t decipher a word of the Maori message, I

perked right up when he instructed, “We’ll now sing a traditional hymn.”

There wasn’t a song book in sight, but it was obvious the regulars knew every word by heart.

One male voice took the lead, then a few more joined in, and before long the congregation was bringing down the roof in a capella harmony.

Soulful togetherness oozes beyond the hallowed halls of the whitewashed limestone chapels.

Rarotonga time is like being in slow-mo.

There’s no rush hour,

fast food chains, or big box stores. Billowy palms line sandy shores and canopy the 32 kilometers of grey asphalt that rings this South Pacific gem.

A secondary road bisects the lush tropical interior and is flanked by humble cyclone-proof cinderblock homes and flourishing crops.

“Taro, arrowroot and coconut are our primary staples,” we’re informed by James, a gregarious guide, who mans the final station of our cultural tour.

Nenqayni is a residential alcohol and drug treatment centre providing holistic healing to First Nations and Inuit youth and families in a safe and secure environment. Our Mobile Treatment Program extends therapeutic services to communities in our area. Please visit our website for further information.

Qualified applicants for the Counsellor position should have a solid grounding in and experience with youth and adult addictions treatment and the ability to deliver one-on-one or group counselling and therapeutic educational workshops.

Relevant post-secondary education or equivalent combination of education and experience is required.

Salary range is $18.00 to $30.00 per hour depending on education and experience. Relocation assistance may be available.

Preferably, the successful candidates will be of aboriginal descent and must obtain a Class 4 driver’s licence within the 3 month probationary period. The Class 4 licence and reliable transportation to and from Nenqayni are required.
