Camping Ride, fish at recreation campsites near Kamloops Recreation sites are located throughout B.C.’s natural forests.

These rustic campsites offer a more rugged camping experience, with natural-landscape spots, dirt roads and, often, networks of backcountry trails.

Unlike provincial parks, many recreation sites don’t have fees, though some do.

Fees vary up to $15 per night.

All sites are first come, first served and can’t be reserved.

The Crown-land sites have few facilities, limited to picnic tables and pit toilets.

They also have a strict user-cleanup policy — if you packed it in, you pack it out — so all campers can enjoy the spot when they arrive.

Campers can stay for 14 consecutive days.

Campfire bans come into effect every year, early in the summer.

Make sure you are up to speed on any bans by checking online at bcwildfire.ca.

To report a forest fire, call 1-800-663-5555.

Access to the sites are often via unpaved service roads and are sometimes restricted to four-wheel drive, high-clearance vehicles, though most can be accessed with two-wheeldrive.

The roads are not always well-signed, so do your research prior to heading out.

recreation sites suited for outdoor adventurers, all accessible via two-wheel drive.

Bleeker Lake

This recreation site, used primarily by fishermen, is located partway down Bleeker Lake on the north side.

There are five maintained campsites with tables and toilets on site.

It’s located just outside the Roche Lake Provincial Park boundary.

Access from Highway 5A between Kamloops and Merritt, and then approximately seven kilometres along the Roche Lake Road.

Turn left onto Bleeker Lake Forest Service Road and travel for approximately two kilometres to the recreation site.

Campbell Lake

First-come firstserved recreation site on the southwest side of Campbell Lake with camping, boating and fishing.

The area is another popular fishing destination and the boat launch is suitable for small trailered boats.

There are 31 sites and a $12 fee for camping, applicable April 29 to Oct. 3.

Tables and toilets on site.

Located southeast of Barnhartvale, access to the

site is off Highway 1, east of Kamloops.

From Barnhartvale Road, turn onto Robins Range Road.

At the intersection of Robins Range Road and Campbell Range Road keep travelling along the Campbell Range Road.

Turn onto the Scuitto Lake Forest Service Road — the Campbell Lake recreation site is approximately 18.6 kilometres from this turn off.

Continue driving past Scuitto Lake (turn left at intersection with Scuitto Lake Branch 6 road). The road parallels Scuitto Lake and then branches out to another intersection once past Scuitto Lake.

Take a right to travel over a cattleguard and follow the Scuitto Lake Forest Service Road until the next intersection.

Taking a left brings you to the entrance of the Campbell Lake recreation site.

Dairy Lake West

A popular trolling and fly-fishing spot, this site features four spots on the 25-hectare Dairy Lake.

It’s one of two sites on the lake, but the only one that can be accessed via two-wheel drive.

A boat launch is accessible and the site has tables and toilets.

Access road is located south from Highway 1, eight kilometres west of the Highway 5 and

Highway 1 interchange, off Greenstone Mountain Road.

Dardanelles Lake

A user-maintained recreation site is located on the north east side of Dardanelles Lake, a popular fly-fishing destination.

The four-campsite location features a boat launch and is outfitted with tables and toilets. The area is also suited for motorized trail bike riding.

The site is located east of Stump Lake off Highway 5A and is accessed either from Dardnelles Forest Service Road, a branch off the Peter Hope Forest Service Road or via a series of forest service roads east of the north end of Stump Lake.

Access is off the Dairy Lake Forest Service Road.

Edith Lake

Edith Lake’s close proximity to Kamloops makes it a popular destination.

The lake is accessible via three boat launches.

There are 12 camp spots in addition to day-use facilities. Campsite fee is $12.

Duffy Lake

The Duffy Lake recreation site is located on the stocked rainbow trout lake, a popular spot for fishers and motorized trail bike users.

A wide network of trails can be accessed from the area.

There are 52 maintained sites, a boat launch, tables and toilets. Camping fee is $12, applicable May to October.

The site is located south of Cherry Creek on Greenstone Mountain.

Isobel Lake

There are 19 maintained campsites at Isobel Lake, a popular biking and canoeing destination.

The site is part of the Isobel Lake Interpretive Forest.

Isobel Lake is stocked with trout, though fishing is most popular in the fall.

Off-road vehicles are not permitted within the boundaries of the recreation site or along the Isobel Lake interpretive trail and the Eagle-Eye Lookout trail.

There is a $12 camping fee, effective May through October.

The site has a boat launch, tables and toilets.

Located north of Kamloops, access to the site is off the Lac du Bois forest service road.

On the north side of the road will be a short access road that leads to the Pass Lake recreation site.

Pass Lake

Pendleton Creek

The scenic Pass Lake is a popular destination for fly fishers due to the rapid growth of fish.

There are 13 maintained campsites at the recreation site, where there is a $12 camping fee, effective May through October.

The site has a boat launch, tables and toilets.

From Kamloops, travel through Batchelor Heights to the beginning of the Lac du Bois forest service road. Travel on the road for approximately 16 kilometres.

The recreation site at Pendleton Creek caters to ATV users, with a network of trails leading to various areas around the site, with five maintained campsites.

There is a $10 camp fee on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, effective May 20 to Sept.

The site has toilets, but no tables.

The open spaces are suited for groupstyle camping.

The site is located

west of Kamloops, near the community of Cherry Creek.

If leaving from Kamloops, travel west along the TransCanada Highway toward Savona.

Turn off the highway onto Selby Road, which becomes Greenstone Road, and travel for two kilometres.

Turn right onto the Duffy Lake forest service road and travel for another kilometer.

The site is on the left side of the road.

Camping Book early for access to in-demand parks The BC Parks online reservation system, Discover Camping, opened March 15.

Individual campsites in many provincial parks can be booked up to three months in advance through the Discover Camping website, or via the call centre.

In 2015, more than 158,000 reservations were made through Discover Camping — an increase of nearly 19 per cent from 2014.

Remember to check out new inventory for the 2016 camping season. Campsites can be booked in Dry Gulch, Inland Lake and Okanagan Falls provincial parks.

There are also

reservable campsites at Ruckle Provincial Park, as well as two brandnew group camping sites at Syringa and Kootenay Lake provincial parks.

Two small, rustic trapper’s cabins in Wells Gray Provincial Park are also available to reserve for the first time this year.

Groups can also now secure their favourite picnic shelters at Summit Lake, Ten Mile Lake, Lac La Hache and Green Lake provincial parks.

Discover Camping displays the availability, layout and amenities at 122 campgrounds — showcasing more than 5,800 campsites — throughout B.C.

Campers can also book their vacation destinations through their smartphones.

Approximately half of all BC Parks camping opportunities still remain on a first-come, first-served basis.

To continue to

maintain service levels and provide new recreational opportunities at B.C. provincial parks for a growing number of visitors, the provincial government is raising some camping fees as of March 15.

The changes affect approximately half of the provincial parks across B.C. where fees are charged for various forms of camping.

These changes support enhanced facilities and services at parks across the province, so visitors continue to enjoy the best experience possible in B.C.’s beautiful parks.

The majority of affected parks will see only a $1 or $2 per night increase.

In some parks, fees will be decreased or eliminated altogether.

For example, several camping and backcountry sites in the Kootenay region, such as at Arrow Lakes Provincial Park, will no longer have fees.

An additional $410,000 is expected to be generated this year for B.C.’s protected areas systems.

All of the revenue from increased fees will be put back into operating and maintaining the parks system.

Parking remains free in all provincial parks.

Off roading Go off the grid: 4x4 and back-country riding Kamloops is a fourwheel-drive paradise.

Four-by-four users in the area congregate on a Facebook page called Kamloops 4x4, which has more that 3,000 members.

The forum offers a place for users to learn about their truck, organize off-roading runs and maybe even reach out for help when in a pinch up the mountain.

The group also has a buy-and-sell aspect.

Members are aiming to establish Kamloops 4x4 as a land-user group that might be able to talk to government to determine where it’s legal and safe to wheel, and offer guidance on how to curb garbage dumping

and illegal wheeling.

“We try to get people to go toward the tread lightly side of four-byfouring, just because the way things are going right now, if we can try to keep people on the trails and out of the mud, it will make four-by-fouring look a little more friendly to people who don’t know anything about it,” said Charlie Denbigh.

The group tries to do three major runs per year and occasional day runs. The group also organizes clean-ups in areas of the backcountry that see a lot of dumping.

There is a cleanup planned for April 24 in Batchelor Heights.

Back-country riding

Cruising along old logging roads or checking out multiple trails, topped off with a picnic lunch, is a great way to see the back country of the region.

It’s recommended to check with the Kamloops Visitor Centre first for information on where to ride as they can offer suggested riding areas

suitable for specific skill levels and are legal to ride.

Where to ride

• Batchelor Heights: This is a designated riding area outside the Lac Du Bois Provincial Park boundaries.

Watch for signs designating restricted areas. Access via Batchelor Heights/Lac du Bois Road. Maps are available at the BC Parks website.

• Greenstone Mountain: Located 15 minutes west of Kamloops on the Trans Canada Highway. Ride a variety of terrain for the beginner through to expert.

Trails are singletrack in tree-lined

areas. Access via Greenstone Mountain Road in Cherry Creek.

• Inks Lake: Located 10 minutes south of Kamloops at the Inks Lake exit off the Coquihalla Highway.

Terrain varies from easy to challenging.

• Whispering Pines Raceway: Located 40 minutes north of Kamloops along Westsyde Road.

The motocross track is open Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and weekends for public use from noon to 8 p.m.

Visitors can purchase individual seasons passes, family passes or day passes at RTR Performance.

Register your rig In order to use or operative an offroad vehicle on Crown land, owners must register their vehicle and clearly display the ICBC number plate or sticker.

The $48 registration fee is a onetime and user-pay. Owners are only required to register their vehicle once.

Off-road vehicles include snowmobiles, all-terrain vehicles, off-road motorcycles, side-by-sides (rhino, argo, razors) and dual-purpose vehicles such as jeeps and trucks.

On the road Safely tow your boat, trailer or off-road vehicles Active adults and busy families understand that one perk to owning a pickup truck or an SUV is the ability to tow items behind the vehicle.

Many of these trucks already come equipped with trailer hitches that make it possible to tow boats, RVs, snowmobiles and more.

But safe and successful towing requires knowledge of the basics of hitching a trailer and some special rules of the road.

The following are a few safety tips for drivers unaccustomed to towing.

• Know your vehicle’s tow weight capacity.

The owner’s manual will list the maximum weight a vehicle can

tow safely, but this is just a simplified estimation of data.

To tow successfully, it’s important to know your vehicle’s gross combined weight rating, or GCWR. This includes the vehicle itself, its passengers and cargo, as well as the trailer and the trailer’s cargo.

More passengers on board reduces the amount of weight you can pull.

Another weight factor is the tongue weight, or how much of the trailer’s weight rests on the hitch, which should be around 10 per cent of the trailer’s weight.

This helps reduce trailer sway and can improve steering.

• Practice proper

weight distribution: Distribute the weight of the item being towed to make towing smoother and safer.

The cargo’s centre of gravity should be low and most of the weight should be toward the front.

Weight on either side also should be even.

These steps will help prevent the trailer from fishtailing or

flipping over.

• Use the right hitch equipment: Adjust the hitch so the trailer being towed is relatively level to your vehicle when attached.

Connect lights to your trailer through the hitch system so brake lights and other indicators work properly.

Make sure the hitch ball is the right size for your trailer; otherwise

the trailer might disconnect during towing.

Use a pin and safety chains to keep the trailer secure.

• Check if extra brakes are required: Many places require a separate braking system on towed vehicles with a loaded weight in excess of 1,000 pounds.

Newer trucks may have a built-in controller for brakes or you

may need to have a system installed.

Experts from Popular Mechanics advise using a trailer brake-output system that matches the trailer brake output to the tow vehicle’s deceleration.

• Slow down and drive more cautiously: A vehicle towing a trailer will not maneuver the same way as a vehicle without a trailer attached.

Give yourself a greater cushion of space between other vehicles.

It may take longer for you to brake because of the added weight.

Get used to using sideview mirrors because the trailer may block your rearview.

Larger, extended

sideview mirrors may help you feel more comfortable and safe.

Make wide turns so the trailer will clear curbs and not tip over.

• Avoid backing up: Unless you’re experienced with driving large rigs, you may find reversing with a trailer very challenging.

Limit situations that require backing up.

Park in pull-through parking spots when possible.

On the trails Explore the outdoors on foot Road, cross the train tracks and parking is on the right-hand side of the road.

Dewdrop Trail: 5.7 kilometre linear trail.

• Spectacular views overlooking Kamloops Lake and the underlying valley.

• Directions: Approximately 25 minutes from downtown Kamloops.

Take Tranquille Road west, turn left onto Red Lake Road.

At approximately the four-kilometre mark (at the switchback) on Red Lake Road turn left onto Frederick Road.

The parking area is about 700 meters down the road (second pullout to the right).

Look for signs at the parking area.

Cinnamon Ridge Trail: 4.25 kilometre trail.

• Features hoodoos.

• Ascends up a ridge and part way up Mara hill.

• Directions: Approximately 15 minutes from downtown Kamloops.

Follow Tranquille Road to the west, turn right on Ord Road.

Cross the train tracks and park at the end of Ord Road.

Cinnamon Ridge Hoodoos

If hoodoos make you happy then a hike through Cinnamon Ridge is just what the doctor ordered.

Kamloops is ancient volcano country and Cinnamon Ridge, part of the Lac du Bois Grasslands Protected Area, is made up of volcanic rocks that erupted about 50 million years ago.

Not only will hikers encounter some amazing hoodoos and a fantastic view, they can expect to see an assortment of plants including cactus, sagebrush, pine trees and assorted grasses. Hikers could also see a variety of birds, California Bighorn Sheep and maybe even a mountain lion.

There are three trails located past Tranquille Road as you head out to Kamloops Lake: Mara Trail, Dewdrop Trail and Cinnamon Ridge Trail.

Mara Trail: 3.5 kilometre loop trail.

• Overlooks Kamloops Lake and Thompson River.

• Directions: Approximately 15 minutes from downtown Kamloops.

Follow Tranquille Road to the west, turn right onto Red Lake

Crazy Creek Falls and Suspension Bridge

If you happen to be driving through the Eagle’s Pass near Revelstoke, you may want to make a pit stop at Crazy Creek.

This waterfall is part of 138 hectares of trust land that was once the community of Taft.

From the late 1800s up to 1918, this community, which consisted of 20 houses, a church/ school house, several large rooming houses, a supply store, CP train station and hotel, was established around a large sawmill.

During its heyday, this mill and logging camps employed hundreds of men. Logs from the upper reaches of Crazy Creek Valley were hauled down to the mill on a logging railway.

This sawmill was powered by water piped down from the above falls through a 14 inch wood stave pipeline.

Up to 150 pounds of pressure turned the waterwheel which drove the large band saw.

Some of the old building foundations and parts of the pipeline are still visible today and are being developed with the help of funds raised from the suspension bridge and falls.

For those who want to stay a bit longer, you are in luck.

The falls are part of the Crazy Creek Resort, a 165-acre year-round resort also featuring three hot pools and a cool plunge pool as two kilometres of frontage on the Eagle River.

Directions: Crazy Creek Resort is located at 6162 Trans-Canada Highway 1 Malakwa, B.C. west of Revelstoke.

On the road Do this and save at the pump this summer You might call it the best kept eco-driving secret of all — using fresh air while driving in the city instead of air conditioning to keep you cool.

Aside from giving you a nice, cool blast of fresh air while you drive, driving with the windows down, or with your sunroof open, is easier on fuel compared to using air conditioning.

In fact, air conditioning can increase fuel consumption by as much as 20 per cent.

Even with the low price of fuel these days, who wants to spend an extra and unnecessary 20 per cent?

The Office of Energy Efficiency at Natural Resources Canada has compiled these tips for cooling off without turning on the A/C: • Chill out and turn it off: Consider whether you really need the A/C for cooling.

If not, turn it off.

• Hit the re-circulation button: Recirculated air uses less energy because you’re only cooling the air already in your vehicle, not bringing in warmer outside air to be cooled.

• Let the air flow: Try using the flowthrough ventilation when you’re on the

highway and open your windows and sunroof while driving in the city.

• Be cool and don’t over air-condition: Adjust your thermostat settings the way you do at home.

Aim to be comfortable not cold.

• Find a little shade: Park your vehicle in the shade as it will requires less cooling from the A/C at startup.

If you can’t find a shaded area, use window shades to lower the heat intake of your vehicle when it’s parked.

Also, never use the A/C on startup.

Instead, open the windows for the first few

minutes and allow the hot air to escape.

• Be a knowledgeable buyer: Be sure to ask if a vehicle has an A/C system with an “econo” mode or smart controls that help reduce fuel consumption.

Choose the fuelefficient option

With the low cost of fuel these days, many drivers may be getting lured into a false sense of security where the price of driving is concerned.

Although it may cost you less to fill up now, you may be tempted to lock in to purchasing an inefficient vehicle that you may get stuck with

when gas prices are high.

Or, you may be making more frequent trips to the pump because subconsciously you may be practicing gasguzzling driving habits because you know the price of gas is low right now.

The Office of Energy Efficiency for Vehicles at Natural Resources Canada has produced some important facts about the real cost of driving, regardless of price: • Fuel is one your biggest annual operating expenses.

• The fuel consumption ratings listed in the annual NRCan Fuel Consumption

Guide range from 4.6 L/100 km for city driving for a compact hybrid, to 23.9 L/100 km for a large van.

• Although these vehicles serve different purposes, they do show how significantly fuel consumption can vary.

• At $1.09/L, driving 20,000 km a year can cost from $1,003 to $5,210 in fuel, depending on the vehicle you buy.

Additionally, carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions of 2.1 to 11 tonnes will be generated, based on the CO2 emissions factor of 2.3 kg/L of gasoline.

If saving money is important to you, especially in the long-

term, choosing a fuelefficient vehicle is a great up-front investment.
