Report calls for lower speed limit of 30 km/h ANDREA KLASSEN

Urban areas should have a default speed limit of 30 km/h to protect pedestrians and cyclists from fatal collisions, Provincial Health Officer Perry Kendall recommends in a new report.

Safer roads and vehicles have reduced fatalities for vehicle occupants by almost 80 per cent in the past 40 years, but the death rate for pedestrians has remained stubbornly high and cyclist fatalities have gone up as more people take to bikes in urban areas, the report says.

Kendall said when a pedestrian is struck by a car travelling 50 km/h, the chances of survival are only 20 per cent.

When the vehicle speed is reduced to 30 km/h, a pedestrian has about a 90 per cent chance of surviving a direct impact.

The current default speed limit for streets in B.C. is 50 km/h — and that includes urban streets where vehicles may be parked on both sides and drivers have little time to see a pedestrian stepping out. Currently, municipalities have to post signs to establish a lower limit for any selected street.

Todd Stone said the province will study Kendall’s report, but has already put the brakes on at least two of the recommendations — including lower standard speed limits.

“There will be no movement on this as there isn’t a really strong ask and endorsement on this from local governments,” Stone, MLA for Kamloops-South Thompson, told media yesterday, noting a similar motion put to the Union of B.C. Municipalities in 2013 was voted down by the province’s mayors and councillors. That motion called for speeds to be reduced to 40 km/hr.

Liam Baker, assistant transportation engineer with the City of Kamloops, said if the province were to lower speed limits, it would take more than posting new signs to get drivers to comply with the change.

“The traffic-engineering world manages speed limits by considering the three Es: engineering, enforcement and education,” he said.

“We don’t find that arbitrarily lowering speed limits without changing the configurations or the geometry of the road does much to slow down motorists.”

That can include narrowing the roadway at pedestrian crossings so drivers feel they’re

more constricted, Baker said, which can help reduce speeds without requiring a major police presence.

The report also recommends the province consider returning to photo radar speed enforcement, which Stone said the province has no interest in doing, calling the program a failure and a poor use of police time.

Kendall suggests the program was a success, with daytime crashes decreasing by 25 per cent during its first year and rising again once the program was cancelled.

“I think it’s very important not to look at any one measure in isolation and point to that one measure as the reason crashes have gone done in a particular time or gone up in a particular time,” Stone said when questioned about Kendall’s findings, suggesting new driving policies and road improvements were as responsible for a decrease in collisions.

The report also recommends extending the mandatory zero blood-alcohol content for new drivers to the age of 25.

The report finds speed, impairment and distraction are the top contributing factors in police reports of fatal motor vehicle crashes.

Controversy and freedom of thought are integral to Thompson Rivers University and will remain so even as the institution implements a moderating system on internal emails in the faculty of arts, according to a senior administrator.

While there are concerns moderating emails will impinge on academic freedom and freedom of speech, TRU vice-president advancement Christopher Seguin said the impetus comes from concerns from within the arts faculty expressed to administration about cyberbullying. TRU Faculty Association president Tom Friedman said a flurry of emails have been exchanged among the faculty members — of which he is one — and their union expressing concerns about the moderation, vanished and rejected emails, who is doing the moderating and what guidelines are in place.

Geography and environmental-sciences professor Michael Mehta has seen internal emails he has sent not arrive onto the list for up to three days, Friedman said.

Earlier this week, an email reposting a Globe and Mail article by political science instructor Derek Cook was rejected as inappropriate. The article reported on the B.C. Liberal Party using private gatherings with big ticket prices as fundraisers, citing a dinner hosted

by Simon Fraser University chancellor Anne Giardini where 10 guests paid $10,00 each to dine with the premier.

Seguin said that was the result of the volume of emails being moderated — each is being reviewed — and the system only allowing for approval or rejection.

An additional option to advise the sender the contents are being reviewed by a moderator is being added and he anticipates the majority of emails will be released to go on to the internal list. He emphasized the decision was made after a concern about cyberbullying was brought to the university’s attention, noting a meeting today with the faculty will address use of personal social media, online bullying and the university’s police on a respectful workplace and harassment.

Friedman said any attempts to regulate how faculty use their personal online media profiles is “inappropriate and an over-reach.” He said that, while the system the arts faculty uses is owned by the employer, the university has had a long history of allowing it to be open and not moderated.

Friedman said the delays or vanished emails were first noticed after the union and administration settled its protracted labour dispute. Faculty exchanged emails complaining about course evaluations, something agreed upon last year during bargaining and presented as a way for students to provide input faculty can use to improve their teaching.

It became an issue when some of the evaluations were completed and results sent to the deans, rather than instructors.

Seguin, however, said there was no link to any internal email discussion on the evaluation system, reiterating moderation was put into place due to a concern about bullying.

Under the Motor Vehicle Act, cyclists are vehicle operators and have the same rights and responsibilities as motorists. When motorists and cyclists follow the same rules, the roads become safer and more predictable for everyone.

Cyclists: • Obey all traffic control devices, including traffic lights and stop signs.

• Use recognized hand signals to indicate stops and turns.

• Don’t ride on the sidewalk, or in a crosswalk.

• Wear a helmet.

• Always ride on the ride hand side of the road, traveling with traffic.

• Be visible. Wear brightly colored or reflective clothing and after dark, use a front white head light and a rear red reflector/tail light on your bike.

• Be aware of the traffic around you.

Motorists: • Scan for cyclists on roadways and at intersections.

• Reduce your speed when approaching cyclists. Don’t blast your horn – you could startle them and cause a crash.

• When following cyclists, don’t tailgate and be prepared to stop quickly.

• When passing a cyclist, do so slowly and leave at least one metre of passing space between your vehicle and the cyclist. Check over your shoulder before returning to your lane.

• Watch for approaching cyclists before opening your car door.

• Children on bicycles are unpredictable – expect the unexpected, and slow down.

It is recommended limiting grave embellishments to fresh cut flowers only during the turf maintenance season. Fire Hydrant Flow Testing From now until May 15, Kamloops Fire and Rescue will be Flow Testing the City's fire hydrants to ensure they are operating properly and have adequate flow. The testing is done to comply with Fire Underwriter requirements. The program will run 7 days a week from 9 am to 8 pm.

During flow testing, poor water pressure and/or high turbidity levels may result. This situation is temporary and may last for up to four hours. If turbidity is detected, you are advised to run a cold water tap and avoid doing laundry until the turbidity clears up.

Despite serious questions from government regulators and scientists, the project manager for KGHM Ajax said yesterday he is confident the proposed mine can meet its air-quality claims.

Two outside scientific reports, as well as provincial and federal officials, have questioned models and assumptions used by the mining company in its airquality predictions.

Health Canada has asked the corporation to remove a statement in its application that the proposed open-pit mine won’t affect air quality in the city, saying it is “not valid.”

But KGHM Ajax’s Clyde Gillespie is adamant the operation will suppress 90 per cent of dust on haul roads.

“We will. There’s many things we can do,” he said. “That’s how we’ll operate.”

Gillespie said the application does not detail precise methods it will use to reduce dust from haul roads.

It is that dust that can travel northbound into Aberdeen through prevailing winds.

Those techniques and commitments can include: • regular watering; • use of chemical dust suppressants; • use of clay in the topmost six or seven centimetres; • adjusting or minimizing use of haul roads on windy days or unusually dry conditions.

While comments from government also question dust suppression on the tailings beach, Gillespie said, by design, it will be a wet slurry.

If the mine is closed for a period, it can be topped by a dust suppressant.

The federal review is on pause to give time for the company to respond to the concerns.

Gillespie said the comments and pause are a normal part of the back-and-forth of the process.

Health Canada reviewers called the proposed 90 per cent dust suppression “unreasonably high” and “unrealistic.”

However, Gillespie said the number is not only realistic, but “done everyday.

“In my experience it’s common to use 90 per cent and achieve it, he said, calling it “the norm.”

The company will also do modelling at lower suppression levels and that data will be publicly available.

What’s in a name?

Plenty when it comes to deciding the name of a school.

On Monday, Kamloops-Thompson school board trustees will again be asked to decide what name to give to the school on McGill Road.

Now home to Beattie School of the Arts elemen-

tary classes, it will become the school for the student body and teaching staff of Stuart Wood elementary in September, when the downtown school is closed. The Beattie elementary students will be joining their secondary students to create a kindergarten to Grade 12 school in the former site of John Peterson secondary.

At risk is the heritage of the six Beattie sisters, all teachers in Kamloops,

and that of Stuart Wood, the first teacher at the school that now bears his name.

On Feb. 15, trustees passed a motion to rename Beattie elementary McGill elementary, a decision that follows board policy to name new schools after the districts in which they are found.

Two weeks later, retired teacher Sheila Park asked the board to reconsider and keep the

existing names. Trustees referred her request to a committee to review and, in doing so, realized the original motion had actually renamed Stuart Wood as McGill elementary, so the matter was brought back to trustees to rescind the motion.

Trustees also received a recommendation from superintendent Karl deBruijn that they consider creating a new policy to deal with renaming existing school facilities.

Under BC’s Family Law Act, where a parent wants to relocate with a child or children, and the move would affect the current child custody and access arrangement, written notice must be given to the other parent.

The other parent then has a period of time to oppose the relocation by filing an application.

The court may make an order either permitting or prohibiting the move. For the Court to approve of such a move, the parent desiring to relocate with the children must show that the move is in good faith, that it serves the best interests of the children, and that all options for keeping the existing custody and access arrangement have been explored.

TUNKWA LAKE ROAD — Rick Edwards calls him “The Kid.” The Kid is tattooed, has a buzz cut and carries a relentless smile atop his athletic physique.

At just 20 years old, the Kid — Zach Moore — is already climbing the ranks at VisionQuest Society’s year-old facility a few kilometres south of Logan Lake.

He’s a monitor at the drug-recovery centre that houses 34 men, all of them older and some with as much time spent in jail as he has been alive.

Edwards, the director of the society’s facilities, said Moore commands respect from clients at the recovery centre as he does room checks and keeps tabs on others, particularly those who just arrived.

“He’s got that thug background,” Edwards said with a laugh.

Roy McLaughlan, another councillor who has made it through his own addiction problems, acknowledges VisionQuest doesn’t know the criminal history of those sent here by judges as an alternative to jail.

“We have to take them at face value,” he said. “When they tell us what they’re charged with, that’s all we know.”

There is no alert to those with a history as sexual predators.

Edwards acknowledges RCMP are called for those on a court order who bolt — what he says are rare instances of problems.

An RCMP media spokesman declined to detail the volume or types of calls handled by the threemember Logan Lake detachment, saying that information should come from VisionQuest. The society did not have statistics available.

ASK Wellness executive director Bob Hughes said he has “huge respect” for VisionQuest because the society has taken on the former High Valley Camp on a threadbare budget.

There is already a shortage of drug-treatment centres in the province. Hughes said those established often put in place hurdles that require, for example, five to 10 outpatient treatment sessions

before admittance or have review boards for entering — “all these obstacles to getting people in.”

But, Hughes said, as the facility develops over time, he expects more rigorous intake procedures.

If potential clients are sent to the facility and refuse to sign a release of their criminal record, they can be turned away.

A potential risk, for example, is a sexual predator housed alongside a young man with a brain injury who is vulnerable.

“You’ve got to know that information,” Hughes said. “They’ll tighten up as they grow.”

Hughes said some people in Kamloops struggling with addiction need to be caught “almost at the right hour” to have the willingness to change. They can quickly be taken to VisionQuest the same day. He also predicted the Interior Health Authority may become involved with psychiatric outreach services, further buttressing programming.

READING, WRITING AND RECOVERY

While Logan Lake’s mayor would rather see VisionQuest move away, she said the community needs to build better reporting and information sharing with RCMP and the society.

“I think we’re definitely at higher risk than in the past,” Smith said. “It’s not as though they’re escorted . . . I don’t think you want to be complacent.”

VisionQuest’s Edwards has worked to build connections in

Logan Lake, using services of volunteers to improve clients’ lives and pay the small town back at the same time. Clients shovel snow for those housebound in winter, for example.

On the other side, it was a retired teacher who taught The Kid to read and write while at VisionQuest. Moore, who said his convictions are for drug trafficking, entered VisionQuest four months ago weighing 118 pounds.

Today he’s a trim 172. He first tried drugs at 14, graduating to heroin at 16. He finished Grade 8 without the ability to read or write.

“It was a huge confidence boost for me,” Moore said of his newfound ability. “It made me realize I can do something.”

By court order, Moore will be at VisionQuest for at least a year.

When he’s ready to graduate, he will be sent to a second-stage recovery house in the Lower Mainland to integrate back into society. His goal is to become a counsellor.

While nearly every client who comes to VisionQuest has landed in jail due to their addictions, not all come here by court order.

Michael Zander was introduced to the wreckage of crystal methamphetamine at 53 years old and is trying to clean up.

He was brought here by ASK Wellness, asked to graduate clean before he will be provided social housing in Kamloops.

Without it “you’re homeless and back on the street,” said the former forestry worker.

“I probably wouldn’t make it.”

HOT: Canada’s national winter game in Kamloops is so hot the ice might just start melting.

The Women’s World Hockey Championship is entering the playoff phase this weekend, the Kamloops Blazers are looking to grab a 3-2 series lead in Kelowna tonight (with Game 6 set for Sandman Centre tomorrow night) and the Kamloops Vibe senior women’s squad is beginning its quest for the Western Shield Championship.

NOT: Wage parity, or lack thereof, among soccer players — and other athletes.

Five female players from the World Cupchampion U.S. national team have accused the U.S. Soccer Federation of wage discrimination, noting they are being paid four times less than their male counterparts on the national team.

They have filed an action with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.

The complaint comes on the heels of last month’s controversy in tennis, when the tournament director of the BNP Paribas Open in California said women players — who earn less than their male counterparts at the same tourneys — ride the coattails of men.

athy McLeod has been getting criticized by some KTW readers for daring to suggest voters have a say on the system in which they cast ballots.

The Kamloops-ThompsonCariboo Conservative MP has sent surveys to her constituents, asking their opinion on whether Justin Trudeau’s Liberals should hold a referendum before changing the first-past-the-post electoral system.

In last year’s federal election campaign, the Liberals, New Democrats and Greens all vowed to change the electoral system if they formed government.

The Conservatives did not.

During the election campaign, the Liberals promised to abolish the first-past-the-post system in which candidates and parties are often elected without achieving a true 50-per-cent-plus-one majority.

But the Liberals did not commit to a referendum on the issue. Instead, the party promised to “convene an allparty Parliamentary committee to review a wide variety of reforms, such as ranked ballots, proportional representation, mandatory voting and online voting.”

The Liberals have said they will introduce legislation to enact electoral reform within 18 months of forming government, which gives them until about this time next year to fulfil this significant campaign promise.

That the Liberals did not include a referendum in the plans should not preclude McLeod and others from opining the voters’ voice should be part of the process.

MUSINGS If the goal is to suddenly upend a system of electing MPs that has been in place for generations, one could argue those most affected — voters — should have a say in the matter.

Aside from the call for a national vote, critics have also noted the Liberals (or any party holding a majority in Ottawa) stand to benefit from an electoral system change.

Trudeau’s preference — ranked ballots — would have given the Liberals even more seats in the October election, according to a post-election poll by Abacus Data.

B.C. is no stranger to electoral systems other than first-past-thepost, which is easiest to understand, but does not truly represent the global voting will of the electorate.

In 2005, a complex system called BC-STV (single-transferable vote) was put to referendum and it was approved by voters in a landslide — with 58 per cent in favour.

The problem? Then-premier Gordon Campbell’s B.C. Liberal government placed the threshold at an unfair 60 per cent.

It made no sense: Politicians

could be sent to Victoria with 30 or 40 per cent of the vote, yet the very system through which they are elected required an astounding 60 per cent approval.

That referendum was designed to fail, as was a second vote in 2009, which meekly perished amid a tepid 39 per cent approval margin.

And let’s not forget the mighty B.C. Social Credit Party (which, today, is essentially the B.C. Liberals) came to power precisely due to the single-transferable ballot.

The legendary W.A.C. Bennett did some backroom work prior to the 1952 election to convince the coalition Liberal/Conservative government to use the singletransferable ballot.

The system saw voters rank candidates in order of preference, with their second-place choices coming into play if no candidate garnered 50 per cent support.

Thus the Socreds rode to a narrow victory over the CCF (predecessor to the NDP) largely due to their second-choice status among voters initially loyal to the other three parties.

Once the Socreds slipped into power via the arduous process of calculating the preferential votes (it took more than a month to finalize the count), the decision was made to revert to first-pastthe-post system — and Social Credit ruled for 36 of the next 39 years.

It will be interesting to see how we vote as a nation in 2019, but don’t be surprised if we are back to first-past-the-post by 2023. editor@kamloopsthisweek.com Twitter: @ChrisJFoulds

CLEAN UP AFTER CANINES IN KENNA

ACCENTS SHOW BRAVERY Editor: I recently stood in line behind a couple at Tim Hortons who tapped their toes incessantly while a young man, clearly struggling to express himself in a language not his own, took orders at the till.

The couple made unwarranted comments about how no one could understand anything he said and how “people who come here should learn English.”

Like a thousand other international students attracted to TRU

for its comparatively lower fees, we leave behind family, friends and the comfort of home to travel, young and inexperienced, alone and sometimes afraid, to broaden our horizons for the betterment of our families and ourselves.

So, before you mock someone’s lack of English, put yourself in their shoes and ask yourself if you know what a foreign accent really is.

It is a sign of bravery.

Editor: How do our First Nations people feel about Canada bringing in the large numbers of immigrants to our country?

The Liberal government has informed us that 25,000 Syrian Muslims have already arrived and 300,000 more will be admitted to Canada starting in 2016, with the majority of them being Muslims.

It is my understanding these matters are being decided by the government with no input from anyone else, including natives.

Billions of dollars are being spent and many are asking if this

money could be better spent on advancing First Nations concerns and assisting needy Canadians who are already Canadian citizens?

Where is all this money coming from to bring them here, house them, feed them, provide medical services and provide money until they find employment in Canada?

Given Canada’s recent downturn in the economy, finding employment may take a lot longer than first thought and most do not speak our languages.

Our health-care system is already burdened to the limit, yet

we insist on bringing in more immigrants.

Politicians have little to worry about as Canadians are forced to pay them huge salaries, benefits and pensions.

Canadian aboriginal people have demanded they be included in matters affecting their culture, way of life and beliefs.

Why is it we have not heard from our First Nations throughout the Southern Interior and Thompson-Nicola areas on these important issues facing all Canadians?

Editor: Spring is in the air, grass is getting green and the sun is out, but not all is well walking through Kenna Cartwright Park.

It’s a great park for dog walkers — lots of trails and dirt roads. However, every year it starts again, just like last year and the year before.

People are out and dogs do their business. Some people pick it up and dispose of it properly — others do not.

I just have one question for those who bag the doggy doo doos, tie the bag in a knot and leave it beside the trail.

Who do you think picks up the bag and carries your dog’s mess out to dispose of it properly in a garbage can?

Signage at the park entrance is clear what is expected of those using the park: Carry out what you bring in —dog droppings included.

What is baffling to me is why people even bother picking up and bagging feces if they are going to leave it in plastic in the park? You are adding more pollutants to the environment than if you just left it where it dropped.

Just because Kenna is a city park doesn’t mean grounds keepers are running around picking and cleaning up.

Perhaps the city should change the rules and remove the convenient free doggy bags?

At least nature would take its own course.

“I can’t think of any other examples of this type of thing,” he said.

“I heard one time a zoo somewhere in Russia painted a black bear white to look like a polar bear, but that’s the closest thing I can think of.

“Honestly, in my 12 years of work as IKID’s lead investigator, this is the first time I’ve had to investigate anything.”

Calls to the BC Wildlife Park were not returned as of KTW press time.

The IKID investigation is ongoing.

According to the report, the hairs tested positive for spray paint and a DNA test confirmed they are from a brown bear tracked at one point by conservation officers in the area of Juniper Ridge.

“While undercover, I could smell a strong odour of paint when in Clover’s presence,” Paddington states in the report. “There were also dozens of empty cans of white spray paint in the garbage can in the staff lunch room.”

From a mental standpoint, Kelowna’s 20-year-old netminder has reason to believe in himself, as he bounced back from a shaky performance in the Blazers’ thrilling 5-4 comeback victory in Game 2 on Saturday with a shutout on Tuesday.

His teammates could give him a lift by making something happen on the power play, which dropped to a dismal 0-for-17 this series after it was unable to connect on two opportunities on Wednesday.

“Connor is playing very well five-on-five or on the penalty kill,” said Blazers’ head coach Don Hay, whose team had the league’s fourth best penalty kill in the regular season. “He’s been outstanding for us in the net.

The Blazers’ power play was clicking at 34 per cent from Feb. 8 onward in the regular season, but they are 0-for8 with the man advantage in the last two games, a statistic they would like to improve on tonight.

Expect Matt Revel, Gage Quinney and Collin Shirley to see plenty of ice, as that unit — paired together after Kamloops was shutout on Tuesday — was formidable on Wednesday and combined to register eight points.

“Sometimes, when you make that change, it really gets guys excited,” Hay said on Wednesday. “We weren’t able to create much last night, so we wanted to make a change.”

With the IIHF World Women’s Championship in town, Kamloops hockey fans have been forced to choose where they spend

their money and it showed when an announced crowd of 3,907 showed up to Sandman Centre two nights ago.

“There was a lot of empty seats in here again today,” Ingram said.

“We want to see those filled up.”

Game time is 7 p.m. tomorrow at Sandman Centre.

Brodan Salmond relieved Herringer in Game 4 and was not at fault on the one goal he allowed on 10 shots, but Kelowna is expected to go back to Herringer tonight.

Shirley was asked for comment on the opposing goalie’s mental state and what his team might do to exploit him.

“You say you go to the grocery store for groceries, well, you go to the net for goals and that’s the mindset right now,” Shirley said.

“But we have the two-hour rule, where you forget about the game and you move on, so we’ve got to expect him to be on his game come Friday and we’ve got to be ready to do the same things we did tonight.”

New option for aspiring local b-ball players Basketball players in Kamloops will be given an opportunity to seek outstanding competition this spring and summer.

Performance Hoops, run by coach Aiden Sargent in concert with the TRU WolfPack men’s basketball program, will send elite boys’ teams to between seven and nine tournaments in Seattle, Bellevue, Kamloops and the Lower Mainland.

The program is for boys in Grades 7 through 10.

“Whenever I see local kids unfairly get cut from Team British Columbia, I feel for them,” Sargent said.

“After a player gets cut, there has historically been no option to still train and play elite basketball in our area. We are offering youth players an opportunity to play a similar schedule as Team B.C. without having to go to Vancouver to do it.”

Tryouts will be held on April 5, April 6, April 7 and April 9 at Sa-Hali secondary. It costs $20.

“It’s funny looking at the photo because he looks so young,” she said. “Obviously, I didn’t know him back then. I think it’s pretty neat for him to be back here.”

The now 39-yearold Reid played for the Blazers in 1995-1996, suiting up for 24 games in the Kamloops crease and amassing a 14-7-1 record. He played just one junior season for the Blazers and did stints in the American Hockey League, Central Hockey League, East Coast Hockey League and Europe after leaving the WHL. The native of Grande Prairie, Alta., is in the Sandman Centre stands this week, looking after the couple’s six-month-old son, Calder.

The pair was among the more than 5,000 fans in the stands earlier this week as the Canadians took on the United States to open group play at the world championship.

“I think he slept the whole game, but he’s here,” a smiling Mikkelson said

of Calder, whom the couple named with the help of a national Twitter contest.

“It’s pretty incredible to be back on this team and have a six-monthold son,” the 31-yearold defender said.

“I was sitting in my hotel room the night before we played the Americans and just was thinking about how special this is for us, for our family.”

Mikkelson has had a decorated hockey career for the Maple Leaf, patrolling the blue line in the 2010 and 2014 Winter Olympic Games — in which Canada won gold — and suiting up for five world championship squads. She has also represented Canada at the 4 Nations Cup and in the under-22 Air Canada Cup. Hockey has always been a shared passion for Mikkelson and her husband, who is also the coach of her Canadian Women’s Hockey League team — the Calgary Inferno — which won the Clarkson Cup as league champions in 20152016.

“It’s business as usual for us,” Mikkelson said of her husband doubling as her coach.

“We’ve always been really good at establishing what those boundaries are. It’s no different now. I have a lot of respect for him as a coach and he has respect for me as a player and that’s what we are at the rink — player and coach. And, when we go home, it’s husband and wife.”

Mikkelson said seeing her husband’s name on the wall of Canada’s dressing room has reminded her why she plays, to just go out and have fun on the ice.

In the event she has a tough night, like Monday’s 3-1 loss to the Americans on Canadian soil, she always has Calder at home.

“Honestly, I’m just happy to be here and happy to do whatever I can to help the team win,” she said.

“But to be able to go up after a game and to be able to hold my son, I don’t think there’s any feeling better than that.”

Josh Donaldson would announce his presence loudly each morning by blaring tunes from the Bluetooth speaker at his locker. Later, the reigning American League MVP would take the music with him to workouts and batting practice, where he’d offer tips and talk hitting with rookies and veterans alike.

Donaldson, the Blue Jays’ all-star third baseman, set the tone from the moment he arrived at camp this spring. The team is counting on him, and other veterans, to maintain the rare clubhouse chemistry that was a big part of Toronto’s breakout 2015 season.

“I don’t think that happens everywhere, where a team’s superstar is so willing to help,’’ said second baseman Ryan Goins, who’s added a leg kick in his approach at the plate to mimic Donaldson’s.

“JD, [Jose] Bautista, Tulo [Troy Tulowitzki], Eddie [Edwin Encarnacion], they’re all like that.

“The proof of it is in the pudding last year. You could feel something special in how we acted with each other. Everyone felt like the person next to them had their back.’’

For the first time since 1994, the Blue Jays open play as defending AL East champions.

While their post-season ended earlier than they wanted it to — they lost in six games to Kansas City in the AL Championship Series — the core of that group is returning for 2016, and they’re closer than ever.

Donaldson has had a lot to do with that, continually fostering clubhouse chemistry by making everyone feel welcome.

He began one of his first days in camp by tossing a football around with newcomer Domonic Brown.

Later he was spotted with Brown in the batting cages hours after workouts had ceased for the day.

“It was pretty impressive,’’ manager John Gibbons said. “I hadn’t seen anything like it before. One thing they do is they really help coach each other, and that’s the ideal situation.

“You don’t get that too often.’’

Toronto’s core players saw each other frequently during the offseason. They met in Vegas for a UFC fight and convened at Bautista’s for a onesie-themed Super Bowl party.

Some even reported to Dunedin months early to train together.

Donaldson said he’s a “big believer’’ in the chemistry the team has developed.

“Some people are for it, some say it’s a non-factor, but if you could have seen our clubhouse from the beginning of last season to the end of it, you would definitely understand,’’ he said.

“You have teams that just show up to the ballpark and you have teams where guys look forward to showing up and being around the guys.

“When you have that, when you have 25 guys on the same page, now it becomes fun and you start having success. The guys we have now and the ones we had last year, it’s a special group.’’

“I’m excited to be back with the boys and cause a little trouble,’’ he added.

Even players who weren’t part of last season’s team agree.

Canadian left-hander and former Minnesota Twin Scott Diamond, who signed a minor-league deal in November, was amazed at how quickly he felt included.

“I thought the Twins always had a tight knit group but it’s not even comparable to this,’’ said Diamond, who’s since been relegated to minor league camp.

“Usually there’s separation between pitchers and position players and you don’t see that at all here.

That’s the basis for a great team chemistry and they’ve got it.’’

Toronto opens the season Sunday in Tampa Bay with right-hander Marcus Stroman on the mound.

The 24-year-old has made it clear he intends to fill the role of the staff ace left vacant when trade-deadline acquisition David Price signed a free-agent deal with Boston in the off-season.

Rounding out the rotation is R.A. Dickey, J.A. Happ and Aaron Sanchez, who beat out Gavin Floyd, Jesse Chavez and Drew Hutchison for the contested fifth spot. Marco Estrada (back) will start the year on the disabled list.

The Blue Jays finished 2015 with 93 wins, their most since the 1993 World Series championship season, to win the AL East and break a 22-year playoff drought.

SENSELESS THEFT On Friday, March 25th at approximately 9:20 am, a truly senseless theft took place when someone stole and adult size tricycle.

The owner of the tricycle has trouble getting around but still likes to get out of house. The victim had peddled to a convenience store on the 1800 block of Tranquille Rd., the tricycle was left outside and the owner went into the store for less than 5 minutes.

A witnessed noted a First Nations male age 19, with short dark hair and wearing dark clothing, riding away with the tricycle. The tricycle is described as black, with silver trim and a basket on the front, the tricycle can be easily identified by the owner.

SUSPICIOUS VEHICLE SEEN NEAR BREAK ENTER On Tuesday, March 29th at approximately 8:30 am, a suspicious vehicle was seen in the area of a residential break and enter on the 5300 block of Sunset Drive.

The thieves broke into the house, searched most of the rooms and made off with a laptop, coins and jewelry. A suspicious vehicle

was seen in the area but was not reported to the police until later.

This vehicle is described as Black Dodge pickup truck, year of the vehicle appeared to be around the year 2000, with an extended cab. A Caucasian male in his mid 20’s with a stocky build and a beard was driving the truck.

There was a female in the vehicle

These daytime break and enters are occurring throughout the City of Kamloops. The latest break and enter took place on the 800 block of McArthur drive during the day of Tuesday, March 22nd.

The suspects forced their way into the home and searched through the entire residence.

These thieves took their time in the home and stole 2 TVs, hand tools and numerous DVDs. No vehicle was seen during the theft but there is a very good possibility a vehicle was used to transport all the property.

Most of time these criminals will knock on the front door if no one is home, they will go around

but there was no description for her. Unfortunately, there was no licence plate obtained for the vehicle.

ROBERT (BOB) H. NAGEL September 23, 1939 – March 20, 2016 An avid mountain biker, skier and outdoorsman, Bob passed away peacefully on March 20, 2016 at Kamloops Hospice House after a hard fought battle with cancer.

Born in Konstanz, Germany he later lived in Australia for four years before arriving in Canada in April 1965.

Bob leaves behind his loving spouse and constant companion of many years Kathy Hoch, as well as children Rod Nagel (Jennifer) of South Surrey, Bryan Hoch of Kamloops and Carrie Hoch of Kamloops. Also left to cherish his memory are his precious grandchildren Taylor, Raina, Mahalia and Kai. “We love you forever Grandpa”. Surviving him also is nephew Rudi Nagel (Andrea) of Konstanz, Germany as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Predeceased by his parents Albert and Rosa Nagel as well as by brothers Anton, Arnold and Fritz all of Germany.

Bob worked in Kitimat and Gold River before moving to Kamloops in 1973 to work as a pipefitter for Weyerhaeuser Pulp Mill. He retired in 2001 to pursue his love of skiing and mountain biking.

Many hundreds of days were spent pounding the moguls of Todd Mountain now Sun Peaks, always on the hunt for powder. After retirement he mastered cross country skiing as well.

Bob also raced his mountain bike recreationally, mostly Stake Lake Stomps and the Blue River Mountain Bike Festivals, winning gold once but always motivating the younger bikers to try harder.

Numerous vacations by only Bob and Kathy were spent canoeing or backpacking into the wilderness. Notably twice canoeing the Bowron Lake circuit of 116 km and several times paddling the expanse of Murtle Lake in Wells Grey, accessed only by portage. Always exploring, very long day hikes were done all over our beautiful province. Several multiday backpacking trips into the alpine jewel of Spruce Lake Wilderness Park are treasured immensely. Bob’s children and grandchildren have taken up his love of skiing, riding and hiking, just as it should be.

Be One with Nature Forevermore. The Mountains and Trails are calling.

“Love Always Remembers” Bob requested no formal service. The family will scatter his ashes in a private ceremony.

Thank you to the compassionate knowledgeable caregivers at Marjorie Willoughby-Snowden Memorial Hospice House for making his last month one of comfort and dignity. Also, thank you to Dr. Barnard and to everyone at the Kamloops Cancer Clinic.

ROBERT EPP Mr. Robert (Bob) Epp passed away at Royal Inland Hospital March 27, 2016, after a courageous fight with cancer.

He is survived by his loving wife Joan, daughter Tracey, sons Darrell and Bradley, and granddaughter Lillian, brothers Jack (and Elizabeth), Delmar (and Betty) and many other nieces and nephews.

He is predeceased by sister Joyce, father John and mother Martha.

Bob was born in Loon Lake, Saskatchewan and left for Victoria, BC to join the navy when he was eighteen. After the navy, Bob trained to be an appliance repairman, worked in Victoria for a few years, then was convinced by his best friend to move to Kamloops. He arrived in Kamloops in 1964 and soon thereafter met his wife-to-be at a square dance. They married in 1966 and spent fifty happy years in Kamloops – playing slo-pitch, camping, golfing, curling, playing cards, hiking and getting together with family.

His Celebration of Life will be held in the lounge of the Kamloops Curling Club, 700 Victoria St. at 1:00 PM on Saturday, April 2nd. Pastor Zacharie Jean will be officiating.

Birgitta was born on July 22, 1935 in Enköping, Sweden. Birgitta (and Len) moved to San Diego, California in 1960 after travelling throughout the United States as Swedish journalists.

They moved to Kamloops in 1969, later settling in Monte Lake.

Birgitta supported her husband’s endeavours working as an administrative assistant and when her children were older she was employed as a gardener for the school district. Her horticultural skills and interest made her well suited to the position.

In the later years of Birgitta’s life she was a determined foe of Parkinson’s disease.

He is survived by Chizuko his loving wife of 53 years, and his two children Alan (Alison) and Elaine. He is also survived by his younger brother Iwao, who lives in Japan. He was predeceased by two older brothers Shunji and Hideo.

Frank was born in Port Essington, BC. His family moved to Japan in 1946 after the war, but he returned to Canada in 1953 and resided in Kamloops for over 50 years.

August 29, 1947 - March 29, 2016 It is with heavy hearts that we announce Judy Kerr passed away peacefully on the afternoon of March 29th.

Judy is survived by the love of her life, her husband of 40 years Ed Kerr. She is also survived by her son Mark McVittie (Cecile) and daughter Melanie Barnes (Gareth). Diane Elizabeth Gibson It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Diane Elizabeth Gibson of Kamloops, on March 21st, 2016 at 77 years of age. Diane is survived by her loving husband Cec Gibson, children Barry Gibson and Karen Bodner, grandchildren Jodi (Aiden), Jaylene (Chandler), Jaryn (Russ) and Jordan. She will also be lovingly remembered by her great-grandchildren Kayah and Rowan.

Diane spent her life supporting and teaching others. Through her roles as a teacher, ceramist, coach and volunteer, she touched countless lives.

For those of us blessed with her presence and love in our lives, we knew without a doubt that she would always be there. Her compassion extended though her role within the Church community, Soroptomists Club and to her friends and family. Her zest for life was contagious, and as we face our days without her, we will pull from our time with her and live in her memory.

A Memorial Service for Diane will take place at 2:00 pm, on Saturday, April 23rd, 2016, at Christ Community Church on 8th Street, Kamloops, with Chaplain Clint Heigh officiating.

TORONTO — The United Church has decided to proceed with an unprecedented review that could lead to the defrocking of an ordained minister who believes in neither God nor the Bible.

In a brief one-page decision this week, a judicial committee of the church dismissed an appeal by Gretta Vosper to halt the planned review.

“After fully and thoroughly considering all submissions by the appellant and respondent, the executive of the judicial committee decided that the appeal did not meet the grounds for an appeal,’’ the ruling states.

Among other things, the committee said the ruling initiating the hearing of Vosper’s fitness to lead her east-end congregation came after full and complete consideration. The committee also held, without elaborating, that the decision accorded with the rules of natural justice.

In an interview yesterday, Vosper told The Canadian Press that she was “incredibly disappointed’’ by the appeal decision.

“Every pastoral relationship in the United Church of Canada will be affected by this ruling,’’

Vosper said. “Now a court of the church can intervene in that relationship — and terminate it.’’

Vosper, 57, who was ordained in 1993 and joined her West Hill congregation in 1997, has for years made no bones about her beliefs, which include rejecting the notion of an interventionist, supernatural being on which much church doctrine is based.

“I don’t believe in . . . the god called God,’’ Vosper said last year. “Using the word gets in the way of sharing what I want to share.’’

Matters came to a head after she wrote an open letter to the church’s spiritual leader following the Charlie Hebdo massacre in Paris, pointing out belief in God can motivate bad things.

The initial ruling to review her status came last May from Nora Sanders, general secretary of the church’s general council. Essentially, Sanders said, the review should determine whether the minister was being faithful to her ordination vows, which included affirming a belief in “God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit.’’

It’s not clear when the review led by a panel will take place. So far, however, Vosper’s congregation is standing firmly behind her.

It is with great sadness that the family of Jack Frank McEvoy announces his passing after a brief illness on Monday December 7th, 2015 at the age of 82.

Jack was born on September 24th, 1933 and was predeceased by his loving wife of more than 50 years Melody and is survived by his children Charles, Robert, Amber, Trish and Cathie. Jack will also be fondly remembered by his grandchildren Adam, Kayden, Emily and Peighton and great-grand daughter Zoey.

Jack was predeceased by both his parents Thomas and Rose McEvoy and brothers Jimmy, Louie, Kenny, Ronnie, Donnie, Charlie and Jerry, and is survived by siblings Dave (Rose), Patty (Barbra), Edward (Jeanette), Dennis, Marsha (Ron) and Grace (Brian).

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, April 9th, 2016 at 1:00 pm at the Odd Fellows Hall at 423 Tranquille Road, Kamloops, B.C.

In their effort to head off the review, Vosper’s lawyers had filed 10 volumes of materials comprising 1,687 pages by way of appeal of Sanders’ ruling, resulting in this week’s one-page judicial committee decision.

One of the lawyers, Julian Falconer, said he was dismayed by the terse decision rejecting the appeal.

“This was an opportunity for the United Church of Canada to showcase its reputation for fairness and openness by holding a full hearing of the appeal on its merits,’’ Falconer said in a statement. “It is an opportunity lost.’’

Rev. David Allen, executive secretary of the Toronto Conference, did not respond to a request for comment.

He has previously said he took concerns about Vosper to the church’s executive, which decided it wanted to investigate whether she had gone too far.

Lowe’s takeover of Rona approved ROSS MAROWITS

MONTREAL — Rona shareholders have overwhelmingly approved a $3.2-billion friendly takeover offer from U.S. home renovation chain Lowe’s.

More than 99.9 per cent of votes cast, representing 70.22 per cent of Rona’s 106.9 million common shares, supported the deal, first announced nearly two months ago.

The transaction pays Rona shareholders $24 cash per common share — about double what the stock was worth prior to the offer.

However, preferred shareholders, who were offered just $20 a share, $5 less than the original purchase price, rejected the offer.

Only a quarter of the votes cast, representing 44 per cent of the 6.9 million

preferred shares, backed the transaction.

Still, the negative vote by the small group of investors won’t affect completion of the deal.

The preferred shares will continue to be listed for trading on the Toronto Stock Exchange as a subsidiary of Lowe’s.

The transaction is expected to close by the end of May following approval by Investment Canada and the Competition Bureau.

Rona chairman Robert Chevrier said he was relieved shareholders endorsed the deal.

But he said it was unfortunate one of Quebec’s largest companies had to look for strategic alternatives to compete with Home Depot in an oversaturated Canadian home renovation retail sector.

Representatives of the shareholder rights group MEDAC said they hope the

federal agencies will place conditions to ensure Lowe’s lives up to its commitments to preserve the corporate headquarters in Quebec, keep most jobs and continue the company’s engagement with suppliers.

Outgoing Rona CEO Robert Sawyer believes Lowe’s will preserve the Rona and Reno-Depot brands in Quebec.

“Outside of Quebec it’s another ball game, probably the big box stores will be eventually merged [into the Lowe’s brand],’’ he told reporters.

Lowe’s has said it is aiming to double the operating profitability of the combined Canadian company over five years after identifying more than $1 billion in opportunities.

These included adding appliances to Rona stores, extending Lowe’s private label and e-commerce capabilities and leveraging its supplier relationships and enhanced scale.

revere the amber fluid and was excited when my dearest Ally and I had the opportunity to visit San Diego and see if it really has a claim to be the Craft Beer Capital of North America.

The first evening we visited the Draft Restaurant in surf-side Mission Beach.

Our server, Matteo, waved his arms and said, “Of course, no question that San Diego is tops in beer.

We have over 100 breweries, microbreweries and brew pubs in this county. Many are eclectic.”

Then he confronted us with a mind-boggling choice.

Draft offered 100 local beers, with 69 served from a long line of taps.

But we couldn’t help wonder: With that many taps, how can the servers possibly find the right one?

We tested Matteo by ordering Cali Creamin, a vanilla cream ale by Mother Earth Brewing Company and Devotion Belgian Blonde Ale by Lost Abbey Brewing Company and timed his response.

Happily, our requested ales were back in short order and they were superb.

Sporting a moustache of foam Ally smiled and we clinked glasses.

“I don’t usually like ale, but this is great,” she said.

“I can taste why craft beer has become so popular.”

We were in heaven sampling ales, porters, classic lagers and IPAs. To get further insight into the fast-growing beer craze the next day, we sought out the Stone Brewing Co., which was awarded “all-time top brewery on planet earth” by Beer Advocate magazine in 2013.

Many credit it for leading San Diego’s beer charge.

We entered their World Bistro and Gardens in Escondido, just north of the city, where you can sit inside next to the tanks and piping where their beer is made or outside in the sunshine and warmth for which this city is famous, surrounded by an immense garden.

We decided to further our research on the patio over a pint of Stone Pale Ale, their flagship beer, and an Oaked Arrogant Bastard Ale. We also tested their kitchen. Ally bit into coconut green curry salmon and mussels while I tried the chef’s specialty, Portuguese sausage and kale rigatoni.

Yummy.

“A big part of the brewery’s success comes from their own farm where they grow hops for the beer and food for the restaurant.

Everything’s organic,” our server Kim said.

Happily rubbing my tummy, I asked about their most unusual beer.

“We have several experimentals like Stone Coffee Milk Stout, a bittersweet, creamy, coffee-laced stout,” responded Kim. “But my favourite is the Grapefruit Slam IPA, a double India pale ale utilizing grapefruit peel.”

I was impressed, not only by the outstanding beers but also by the solar panels covering the roof.

“Another reason for Stone’s success is our guardian, a gargoyle, who wards off the evil spirits of beer, namely, cheap ingredients, pasteurization and chemical additives,” Kim said.

The next evening, we entered the Yard House in the historic Gaslamp Quarter with the goal of verifying their boast of having the largest selection of draft beer in the world.

Our eyes widened as we saw their transparent keg room, which was crammed with 600 barrels containing 4,000 gallons of beer and 130 tap handles.

Wow. We were enthralled and realized we faced a mammoth challenge.

The server, Charlotte, described a range of brews including classic lagers and obscure ales and stouts

served in authentic goblets, pints and half-yard glasses.

We settled for a row of glasses filled with attractive fluids of different colours, foaminess and clarity.

Sipping contentedly, we felt like we were in an art gallery because the walls were alive with many attractive paintings.

We sampled from the menu, which offered an array of trendy cuisine.

Toasting the Yard House and its unusual keg room, we realized good research isn’t really that difficult; it just requires perseverance.

Over the next few days we visited several more breweries, but on our last day admitted we were simply outnumbered.

San Diego is definitely a champion of craft beer.

We promised to return, perhaps during Beer Week in early November.

So much work remains — I want to sample them all.

Others on the list include: A wine-barrel aged English Brown Ale by Twisted Manzanita Ales and Spirits, a Habenero Sculpin (very hot) IPA at Ballast Point Brewing Company, a Peanut Butter Milk Stout at the Belching Beaver Brewing Co. and much more.

im Moorhead knows not everyone will get as personal with the machines as he did last year.

The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) volunteer did not hesitate to climb into the back of a hearse during the inaugural Meet a Machine fundraiser event on the Kamloopa Powwow Grounds.

“I tell you, it was like an epiphany,” Moorhead told KTW. “It was like I had been there, done

that, and I’m good for another 40 years.”

Businesses will once again lend out heavyduty machines for the

day, allowing people the opportunity to interact with them or simply learn more by quizzing volunteers.

More than 50 different machines will be on hand and it’s tailored for kids, who can hop aboard a fire truck, ride a scissor lift or take in the bouncy castle and get their face painted during the entertainment portion of the event.

Organized by the local chapter of the JDRF, the event raises money for the national office to invest in research into things like improved insulin pumps and artificial pancreases for those

with Type 1 diabetes.

Moorhead’s grandson has the disease and it’s why he and other family members got involved.

He helped drum up the idea for Meet a Machine based on a similar event in New Brunswick.

“We decided to see how Kamloopsians would accept it,” Moorhead said.

He never thought it could draw more than 3,000 people and raise $8,500 in its first year.

“It went way beyond

our expectations,” Moorhead said.

“We couldn’t believe the support.”

Many of last year’s machines will be returning, along with new ones, and Moorhead is looking forward to one new addition from Richmond Steel.

“We’ll have some car crushing going on,” he said.

Added to the entertainment lineup, the 501st Legion is sending Star Wars characters for the day.

If there is one feline trait that even the most dedicated cat-lover deplores, it is their tendency to catch and kill birds and other wildlife. The best current estimate of the number of birds killed by domesticated and feral cats in Canada is 150 to 250 million birds per year! Mortality is highest in the spring, when the death of an adult bird may lead to starvation for all the nestlings it is feeding.

As Canada’s wild bird population is estimated to be in decline (about 12% over the past 40 years), cat predation is a huge concern for people who love wild birds and value their contribution to natural ecosystems.

Not all outdoor cats are hunters. One study showed that cats eating household scraps were four times more likely to kill and eat mice, compared to cats being fed commercial pet foods. However even the best fed cat may kill birds if their hunting instinct is strong.

Often the owner is unaware of the cat’s behaviour because the cat consumes the prey rather than bringing it home. Predation is not good for the cat, either: in the Kamloops area, cats that consume wild birds and mammals are often infected with tapeworms and may be exposed to infectious diseases such as

toxoplasmosis and salmonellosis.

How can predatory behaviour be controlled?

The most effective solution, obviously, is to keep the cat indoors or securely housed in an outdoor enclosure. For cats with free access to the outdoors, a number of devices are available that appear to reduce the cat’s success as a predator. The simplest, of course, is a collar with a bell – this has been shown to reduce predation by an average of 30%.

More sophisticated and effective solutions can be found on-line. One example is the “Birdsbesafe”, a 2-inch ring of brightly coloured cotton fabric that attaches to a nylon quick release collar and reduces bird kills by up to 87%. This collar is easily detected by birds, who have excellent colour vision. Which leads to our next topic - can cats see colours?

e often think of healthy eating as an all or none situation.

Many of us feel that in order to eat healthy, we have to eat a salad every day and avoid all treats. When we don’t accomplish that, we feel like guilty.

I’d like to suggest we rethink that.

I was recently at a friend’s home celebrating her birthday.

Someone at the party mentioned they were trying to eat healthy, but they had failed that day because of the cake, chips and drinks.

It got me thinking — healthy eating is much more than eating only nutritious food.

Enjoying treats on special occasions, eating a couple pieces of chocolate after a meal or going out for a burger and fries once in a while can all be part of healthy eating.

Treats are OK as long as we focus on eating fruits and vegetables, whole grains, dairy and plant-based proteins like lentils, seeds and nuts most of the time.

Having a good relationship with food and enjoying all food, even those no-so-nutritious snacks, can set us up for a lifetime of healthy eating. This mindset allows us to not feel guilty when eating treats and it can keep us on track with healthy eating.

We are bombarded by so many messages on social media about what foods to eat for certain health benefits.

The truth is all food provides health benefits.

The piece of cake I ate at the birthday celebration was good for my sense of well-being and social connectedness.

I enjoyed eating that small piece of cake with friends as we talked, laughed and enjoyed each other’s company.

And, of course, chocolate cheesecake tasted really good, too. (It was the real deal — made with real cheese and real chocolate.)

Many desserts and recipes use alternative ingredients to make them seem healthier, but the reality is date-loaded, cashew cream-filled, carobsoaked cake is really not any healthier than the real deal.

Sometimes we all need a reminder of what healthy eating really is.

Registered dietitians are able to help by working with people to determine what works best for each one.

And, yes, that might include having a small treat every day.

hether you’re at Riverside Park or the TCC, whether you have kids registered in sports programs or after school programs, whether you know a seniors organization or a brain injury organization that needs a little help, you’ll always find Rotarians close at hand—Rotarians at Work!

While Rotarians prefer to work in the community without much fanfare, they’re incredibly busy helping out in all sorts of areas—and everything they do is volunteer.

Rotarians do this without any overhead costs—yes, Rotary’s administration costs are covered by the membership.

For several years now, the five Kamloops Rotary clubs have collaborated to collect over 100,000 pounds of food for the Food Bank.

They spearhead two food drives each year, one in the spring and one in the fall. Rotarians drive all over Kamloops picking up the yellow bags that the wonderful people of Kamloops fill with groceries and leave on their doorsteps.

Before they begin their day, the Rotarians make a donation that pays for their breakfast (with the money going to a worthwhile organization: the Lions Club). Then they drive their own vehicles on their own time—and they always do it with great big smiles on their faces. Rotary clubs across the country are looking at ways to adopt this program. It’s just another example of Rotarians at Work.

Each Rotary club has its own special projects. While there isn’t room to include all the projects in this article, here’s a quick snapshot. The West Club is heavily involved with the Power Start program in several schools. Most school mornings you’ll find these Rotary club members driving kids to school and serving them breakfast. The Downtown Club is involved in developing youth skills, and that includes the Rotary Youth Speaks Competition.

The Aurora Club is renowned for their fantastic Spaghetti Western fundraiser, and the North Club is involved in the eradication of polio and promotion of literacy with the Little Free Library project.

Kamloops Rotary Daybreak holds two major fundraisers each year: Crabfest and Ribfest. At the former, Kamloops residents purchase tickets for a night of serious eating and rollicking fundraising. Last year Daybreak raised more than $30,000. As with all Rotary fundraisers, every aspect of the event, from planning, scheduling, selling tickets, finding the elusive crab, to ensuring everything

We’re certain you know all about Ribfest— it’s Kamloops’ most popular public event and the main fundraising event for Daybreak Rotary. Ribfest requires yearlong planning: from booking the Ribbers (who hire local youth for the event) to working out all the logistics—including things you may never consider. Some of the “headaches” include where to get dumpsters, fencing, licences, and security; preparing for and running the beer garden; organizing the raffle; finding sponsorship; ensuring the literally hundreds of bottles of water, beer, and wine, along with corn, watermelon, and even toys for the fishing pond are delivered to vendors; recruiting and organizing food vendors and, of course, the enormous task of removing the garbage and recycling from the park. And, on the day after the event, Rotary volunteers spend literally hours returning the entire park to its preevent condition.

Of course this says nothing about the thousands of hours of volunteer work expended by the club throughout the year and by community-minded people who come out for the weekend. Not only is this event free to the public—including the amazing and hugely popular Family Fun Zone, but like all Rotary fundraisers, 100% of all profits go back into the community. Truly, another example of Rotarians at Work.

So the next time you hear the words, Rotarians at Work, you’ll have a better understanding of the amazing fundraising role these dedicated volunteers play in our community. And all of the funds raised by Rotarians at Work go right back into the community to enrich the quality of life of everyone who lives here.

Easter in the park The Vintage Car Club of Canada’s Kamloops chapter took their rides for a spin during the 46th annual Easter Parade on Sunday.

The parade, open to anyone driving a 1991 or older stock vehicle, started at the Dunes at Kamloops Golf Course with dozens of vintage cars parading down Westsyde Road to Eighth Street, along Tranquille Road, across Overlanders Bridge, then through downtown and winding up at Riverside Park in the early afternoon.

What about Easter Saturday?

W

e’ve just been through another Easter season.

Oceans of ink have been spilled about Good Friday and Easter Sunday and rightly so.

But it is very rare we hear anything about Easter Saturday.

Just exactly what was Jesus doing between his death on the cross on Friday afternoon and his resurrection on Easter Sunday morning?

The Apostles’ Creed, the comprehensive statement of faith shared by most branches of Christianity, states Jesus “was crucified, died and was buried; he descended into hell; on the third day he rose again from the dead.”

Some versions say “he descended to the dead.”

But the clear intent of the phrase is to declare Jesus died as

There is very little in the Bible about Easter Saturday and what is there is subject to considerable difference of opinion in the various Christian traditions.

The first letter of St. Peter says, “Christ . . . went and preached to the spirits in prison, who disobeyed long ago when God waited patiently in the days of

Noah while the ark was being built.”

A few verses later, Peter writes, “the gospel was preached also to the dead . . . so that in their spiritual existence they may live as God lives.”

These two verses appear to make two very important distinctions among those who were recipients of Jesus’ preaching on Easter Saturday.

The first verse suggests in one group were the scoffers, who in Noah’s time ridiculed him for insisting God was going to destroy the earth in a great flood as punishment for their rampant immorality.

In other words, Jesus is declaring in no uncertain terms Noah was right, and their rejection of his message of redemption resulted in their destruction.

The message, by implication, is the

same for our own time.

Those who reject the gospel message, and the redeeming sacrifice of Christ, will share the same fate as those benighted spirits of Noah’s day.

This passage also suggests that after we die, we will have a conscious existence (i.e. able to listen to a message of God).

The great tragedy of unbelief is the souls of the departed will experience a conscious eternity, forever separated from God. That is not what God wants, however.

He doesn’t want anyone to perish without his love and grace and offers it freely to all who will believe.

The second verse from Peter has huge significance.

Scripture teaches that Jesus is “the way, the truth and the life, and no one comes to the father except through him.”

That appears to be very “excluding.”

Over the centuries, people have rightly asked — what about people who have never heard of Jesus, what about children who die in infancy, what about all the millions who existed before Jesus was ever born?

Will a just God condemn those in their ignorance?

I think the logical answer must be a resounding no.

The reason is contained in Peter’s short verse, “so that in their spiritual existence they may live as God lives.”

There have been righteous men and women in all the ages of mankind — Job and Enoch are two biblical examples.

And in Romans, Paul says since creation, god has made himself known to all people, so they are “without excuse.”

The Book of

Revelation says of Jesus, “You were slain, and with your blood you purchased for God those from every tribe and tongue, people and nation.”

There is no people group, no nation and no language which will be unrepresented in the kingdom of heaven.

The righteous, innocent and young of every nation and people who have ever lived on earth, will all receive the gift of salvation.

That is what Jesus was doing on Easter Saturday — preaching the Gospel, the Good News, to those righteous people who had already passed into the realm of the dead.

He likely preached their holy living did not go unnoticed by the creator and that he had come to take them home to their eternal reward.

It was the final act of his messianic mission.

He promised not

one of his flock would be lost and this is him fulfilling that promise.

This dual message is one that will be repeated on Judgment Day. To one group — the scoffers, the defiant, the unrepentant, the evil and every type of sinner — will come a sentence of judgment.

To another group, believers of every tongue and nation and people, especially those who died martyr’s deaths because of their belief, will come a message of salvation and the promise of paradise.
