SECOND PERIOD OUTBURST LIFTS CANADA TO VICTORY OVER RUSSIANS Canada last surrendered a preliminary round goal to Russia in the 2012 IIHF Women’s World Championship in Burlington, Vt. The goal didn’t much matter — Canada went on to win the preliminary round matchup 14-1.

History nearly repeated itself at Sandman Centre.

Canada rallied from a 1-0 first-period deficit to defeat

the Russians 8-1 in their second game in as many nights in Kamloops on Tuesday.

The victory came on the back of a second period that saw the Canadians find the net five times in the span of 4:40, erasing Russia’s lead and chasing starting netminder Anna Prugova from the crease in front of a ecstatic crowd of 4,453 fans.

DAY 3|MARCH 31, 2016 “We just needed to get that first goal,” said Canadian forward Rebecca Johnston, who got the scoring starting 40 seconds into the second period.

“We had a lot of good chances in the first period so I think going into that second period, we weren’t down on ourselves.

We knew we just had to just keep getting shots on net.”

The tournament hosts will return to action at Sandman Centre today, facing off against Finland in their final preliminary round game Puck drop is 7:30 p.m.

Johnston’s shorthanded goal seemed to open the floodgates for the Canadians in the second period. Halli Krzyzaniak scored her first of two goals a little more than two minutes later and Jennifer Wakefield added a third Canadian marker on a breakaway, despite being hauled down by a Russian defender in the process.

Wakefield’s goal signalled the end of Prugova’s night — she was replaced by Maria Sorokina, whose fortunes didn’t get any better.

Just seconds into her appearance, Sorokina surrendered a pair of goals to Meaghan Mikkelson, both markers just 38 seconds apart. All told, the Russian lead had evaporated in a span of 4:40 in the second period and Canada led 5-1.

Krzyzaniak’s second goal came with Canada on the power play in the waning moments of the second frame.

“Definitely the fastest two goals of my career,” Mikkelson said with a laugh.

The defenceman nearly made it three, stymied on a penalty-shot opportunity — after the game she wasn’t sure she had ever taken a penalty shot before — after a Russian defender closed her hand on the puck in the crease.

5 “The goals were going to come,” she continued.

“We had a lot of good chances in the first so we knew we just had to stay on them and put the puck in the back of the net.”

With the game already well in hand, Marie-Philip Poulin scored her first goal of tournament play, shorthanded, to start the third period and Emily Clark added Canada’s eighth goal with time winding down in the contest.

“We’re happy that we had a couple chances,” Poulin said after the victory.

What was expected to be Canada’s top scoring line of Poulin, Meghan Agosta and Natalie Spooner has combined for just a goal and two assists so far this tournament.

“Happy with our line,” Poulin continued. “I think we got the puck on net and hopefully it’s going to get going in the next game.”

Johnston and her linemate Brianne Jenner both finished the night with four points.

Despite the rout at Sandman Centre, it’s not all roses for Canada through two games in Kamloops. The team played shorthanded eight times on Tuesday night against the Russians and was on the penalty kill six times against the Americans on Monday.

The penalty kill has surrendered just one goal so far this tournament — a plus — but Canadian head coach Laura Schuler said she’d rather see her team on the power play.

“We addressed that again in the locker-room,” she said post-game.

“We’ve got to keep our feet moving. We can’t take slashing penalties, reaching penalties, holding penalties.

We’ve got to skate and move our feet.”

•F innish goaltender Meeri Raisanen was outstanding on Tuesday, stopping 49 of 51 shots in a 2-1 loss to the United States. The onegoal margin stood in stark contrast to the numbers on the shot clock: 51-7 in favour of the Americans.

CZECHS PULL OFF FIRST UPSET OF TOURNEY The 2016 IIHF Women’s World Hockey Championship in Kamloops has recorded the first upset of the tourney as the Czech Republic defeated Switzerland on Tuesday afternoon by a score of 3-1.

Tereza Vanisova scored twice for the Czechs in the first three minutes of the second period. Switzerland’s Alina Müller pulled her team to within a goal at the seven-minute mark,

but a third-period goal by the Czech Republic’s Samantha Kolowratova sealed the victory.

Klara Peslarova earned the win in net for the Czechs, turning aside 22 of 23 shots.

Florence Schelling was between the pipes for Switzerland and stopped 14 of 17 shots.

Both teams are now 1-1. The Swiss will finish their preliminary round

Finland opened the scoring five minutes into the game on a goal by Michelle Karvinen, but the U.S. replied with a late first-period tally by Hilary Knight and a second-period marker by Jocelyne Lamoureux-Davidson.

Jessie Vetter had a quiet night in net for the U.S. en route to notching the win.

The U.S. is now 2-0 and Finland is 1-1. The United States plays Russia today, while Finland faces Canada.

•S weden outshot Japan 35-16 on Tuesday as Sara Grahn recorded a shutout in a 2-0 victory.

Pernilla Winberg and Emma Eliasson scored for the Swedes, with Japanese goalie Nana Fujimoto being peppered by shots.

Sweden is now 2-0 and will end preliminary play with a game today against Switzerland. Japan is 0-2 and faces the Czech Republic today.

LUNCH BUFFET After winning a bronze medal in the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi, Russia, the Swiss will be gunning for a medal at the 2016 IIHF Women’s World Championship in Kamloops.

Switzerland has one bronze medal to its credit at the world championship, won at the 2012 event in Burlington, Vt. The Swiss have played for bronze one other time, falling to the to the Finns in the 2008 world championship in Harbin, China.

The bronze medal at the 2014 Olympics was a banner moment for Swiss hockey — the program is ranked No. 4 in the world — and the nation will be looking to rebound after finishing sixth in the 2015 world championship in Malmö, Sweden.

The nation has played to a victory against Japan and a loss against the Czech Republic thus far in Kamloops and will face Sweden in tonight’s action.

If there’s a player that has the potential to make the Swiss dangerous in Kamloops, it is goaltender Florence Schelling. The 27-year-old native of Zürich plays her club hockey in Sweden’s professional league and had a tournament-best .940 save percentage in the Malmö world championship last year.

Schelling was named Most Valuable Player at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games despite Switzerland finishing without a win in group play. She was exceptional in playoff action, making 41 saves to shut out Russia in a quarter-final matchup and turning aside 45 of 48 shots in a semifinal loss to Canada.

The pinnacle of Schelling’s Games was a 28-save performance against Sweden in the bronze-medal showdown to help capture Switzerland’s first medal in Olympic women’s hockey.

Alina Müller is a player to watch amongst the Swiss forward group. At just 15 years old, she was the youngest player in the 2014 Sochi Games and plays an intense, gritty game.

Müller was an all-star at the 2016 IIHF World Women’s U18 Championship in St. Catharines, Ont. earlier this year, finishing her five-game tournament with seven goals and two assists. She is now just 18.

RISE OF PROFESSIONAL HOCKEY LEAGUES A BOON TO WOMEN’S GAME Much has been made of the growth of women’s hockey on the international stage at the 2016 IIHF Women’s World Championship in Kamloops.

But what might more important to the future of the women’s game is the emergence of professional hockey for female players in North America.

Both Canada and the United States now boast leagues for their elite talent — the Canadian Women’s Hockey League (CWHL) north of the border and the National Women’s Hockey League (NWHL) to the south — and female players in North America are reaping the benefits of playing year-round hockey against other elite talents.

“I think for me, graduating last year and having this year in the CWHL, it has been growing,” said Canadian captain Marie-Philip Poulin, who plays her club hockey for the Les Canadiennes de Montréal of the CWHL. Poulin finished the 2015-2016 season as the league’s leading scorer with 46 points, including 23 goals, in 22 games.

She won the Jayna Hefford Memorial Trophy as the player who reflected the best of the CWHL and was voted most valuable player.

“We don’t get paid and we love the game and we’re doing it because we love it,” Poulin said. “We’re doing it for the next generation, to push.”

The CWHL was formed in 2007. Five teams — Boston Blades, Brampton Thunder, Calgary Inferno, Toronto Furies and Poulin’s Canadiennes — compete for the Clarkson Cup each spring.

The NWHL was formed in 2015 and just completed its first season with four teams — Buffalo Beauts, Boston Pride, New York Riveters and Connecticut Whale — vying for the Isobel Cup. The prominence of the leagues has been growing. They went head to head in an outdoor game as part of the NHL’s Winter Classic festivities in December, with the Canadiennes and the Pride playing to a 1-1 draw. Media attention has started to come.

And the leagues take centre stage at events like the world championship. Eighteen of Canada’s players are in the CWHL

and, south of the border, 10 members of the U.S.’s world championship roster play in the NWHL. “We’ve always dabbled in that senior league on our side of the border,” Melody Davidson, Canada’s general manager of national women’s team programs, told KTW. “Now, with viable leagues on both sides, the next step is how do we make one North American league that’s compatible for everybody?”

Davidson likened the emergence of the NWHL and CWHL as similar to that of the WHA and NHL, professional hockey leagues that went head to head in the men’s game in the 1970s. Eventually, the WHA merged with the NHL, creating the foundation for what would become the world’s premier hockey league.

It’s an evolution Davidson feels is also inevitable in the women’s game.

“It has to be, in my opinion, it has to be,” she said. “We don’t have enough depth to run two really good products on both sides, with eight or 10 or 12 teams. We need to build that together. It will come. The same as it happened with the WHA and the NHL and how the men’s side all grew and evolved.

That’s just where we’re at.”

The biggest difference between the two leagues is pay — NWHL players are paid, while CWHLers aren’t. Income is expected to be on the horizon in Canada, but it’s anyone’s guess as to when.

Still, the players play. Canada’s women view the CWHL as a platform from which to promote the game and improve the situation for the next generation.

Sure, they want to be paid, but that’s secondary to the larger goal of growing women’s hockey.

“You watch the world championships and there’s a hype around worlds and Olympics, but we’re all playing in these leagues in the non-Olympic years,” said Canadian defenceman Tara Watchorn, who plays her CWHL hockey for the Calgary Inferno, the defending league champions.

“If people start to realize that more, you’re going to get more hype around the CWHL and NWHL games, knowing that all those players, that’s where we are.”

When Meaghan Mikkelson first walked into the Kamloops Blazers’ dressing room — Team Canada’s digs for the duration of the 2016 IIHF Women’s World Hockey Championship — she was greeted by a familiar face.

Not her Canadian teammates, the coaching staff or the trainers, but a photograph of her husband, former Kamloops Blazers’ goaltender Scott Reid.

“I think it’s cool for him to be back here, where he played, watching me play,” Mikkelson told KTW earlier this week.

“It’s funny looking at the photo because he looks so young,” she said. “Obviously, I didn’t know him back then. I think it’s pretty neat for him to be back here.”

The now 39-year-old Reid played for the Blazers in 19951996, suiting up for 24 games in the Kamloops crease and amassing a 14-7-1 record. He played just one junior season for the Blazers and did stints in the American Hockey League, Central Hockey League, East Coast Hockey League and Europe after leaving the WHL. The native of Grande Prairie, Alta., is in the Sandman Centre stands this week, looking after the couple’s six-month-old son, Calder.

The pair was among the more than 5,000 fans in the stands earlier this week as the Canadians took on the United States to open group play at the world championship.

“I think he slept the whole game, but he’s here,” a smiling Mikkelson said of Calder, whom the couple named with the help of a national Twitter contest.

“It’s pretty incredible to be back on this team and have a sixmonth-old son,” the 31-year-old defender said. “I was sitting in my hotel room the night before we

played the Americans and just was thinking about how special this is for us, for our family.”

Mikkelson has had a decorated hockey career for the Maple Leaf, patrolling the blue line in the 2010 and 2014 Winter Olympic Games — in which Canada won gold — and suiting up for five world championship squads. She has also represented Canada at the 4 Nations Cup and in the under-22 Air Canada Cup. Hockey has always been a shared passion for Mikkelson and her husband, who is also the coach of her Canadian Women’s Hockey League team — the Calgary Inferno — which won the Clarkson Cup as league champions in 2015-2016.

“It’s business as usual for us,” Mikkelson said of her husband doubling as her coach.

“We’ve always been really good at establishing what those boundaries are. It’s no different now. I have a lot of respect for him as a coach and he has respect for me as a player and that’s what we are at the rink — player and coach. And, when we go home, it’s husband and wife.”

Mikkelson said seeing her husband’s name on the wall of Canada’s dressing room has reminded her why she plays, to just go out and just have fun on the ice.

In the event she has a tough night, like Monday’s 3-1 loss to the Americans on Canadian soil, she always has Calder at home.

“Honestly, I’m just happy to be here and happy to do whatever I can to help the team win,” she said.

“But to be able to go up after a game and to be able to hold my son, I don’t think there’s any feeling better than that.”
