A Kamloops physician is praising a Health Canada decision to make Naloxone available without a prescription and the B.C. government’s decision to make it available through pharmacies immediately.

Dr. Ian Mitchell, who is involved with a program that has seen Naloxone kits in the emergency room at Royal Inland Hospital, as well as at other health centres, called the move progressive.

Naloxone can be used to reverse an opioid overdose and, with very

little training, anyone can learn how to use it.

The Health Canada announcement noted it had received more than 130 responses — each one in favour of the change — when it began a consultation period to decide if it should keep the drug on the prescriptiondrug list.

Mitchell said the response saw Health Canada expedite its decision.

While provinces need to make regulatory changes to enact the delisting, B.C. Provincial Health Officer Perry Kendall said the province’s College of Pharmacists moved immediately “to make the necessary chang-

es so that more British Columbians can access this life-saving drug.”

Mitchell said “this means that instead of requiring each individual to visit a physician to get a kit of their own, these kits can be purchased by institutions — ranging from recovery centres to stadiums to schools.

“It also makes it much easier to make this life saving medication available to police and fire services,” he said.

Last week, however, the Chicago Tribune reported at least three pharmaceutical companies have been increasing the price that accompanies the kits by up to 1,000 per cent.

Kamloops Mounties are warning drug users about a bad batch of dope in the Tournament Capital that has resulted in a spike in overdoses — one of them fatal — this week.

“That’s what we’re saying,” RCMP Staff Sgt. Robert Daly told KTW. “If you’ve purchased street drugs, don’t do them.”

On Wednesday afternoon, police were called to a parking garage at Second Avenue and Victoria Street where a 41-year-old man had died.

Two other men were taken to hospital.

Later in the day on Wednesday, Daly said, Mounties were called to three additional overdoses.

“Police investigation at two of these scenes have confirmed the overdose occurred after an intravenous injection of heroin,” he said.

Daly said he couldn’t say whether intravenous heroin was involved in all of Wednesday’s overdoses and that investigators are looking into whether fentanyl is also involved.

“We’re considering all drugs, but fentanyl is in that batch,” he said.

Fire Hydrant Flow Testing From now until May 15, Kamloops Fire and Rescue will be Flow Testing the City's fire hydrants to ensure they are operating properly and have adequate flow. The testing is done to comply with Fire Underwriter requirements. The program will run 7 days a week from 9 am to 8 pm.

MP calls for Ottawa to protect private property CAM FORTEMS

The federal Liberal government should be credited for defending against a First Nations lawsuit targeting lands owned by Ajax mine proponent KGHM, according to KamloopsThompson-Cariboo (Conservative) MP Cathy McLeod.

However, she added, the Liberals should have used stronger language to protect private-property interests.

McLeod responded to the filing of a state-

ment of defence by the federal government to a civil claim

by Stk’emlupsemc te Secwepemc Nation(SNS), a joint body of the Tk’emlups and Skeetchestn Indian bands.

The bands are staking a claim to Ajax mine land, located on private property, as well as a vast area that includes the City of Kamloops.

That area includes property on which households sit.

“I’m glad they filed and will defend the case,” said McLeod,

who earlier this month pressed the government during question period in the House of Commons.

Ottawa sought several extensions for filing a defence following

the election of the new Liberal government.

The federal government states the latest claim conflicts and overlaps with two other earlier claims, that SNS doesn’t represent all Secwepemc people and that SNS failed to name all private-property owners in the city in its lawsuit.

“We put considerable pressure on having the government make a decision on this,” McLeod said.

McLeod, the Conservative aboriginal-affairs critic, said it

is widely recognized the best way to deal with claims is outside court, but she believes Ottawa should more aggressively defend claims on

private property.

The SNS suit is unique for its claim on private property, rather than restricting demands to Crown land.

“There’s nothing that clearly states the position of the government that private property is not on the table,” McLeod said.

DO I NEED A WRITTEN CONTRACT? There was a time where a handshake was as good as any contract.

Still today, a written contract is not necessarily better than a verbal agreement, but a verbal one may be vague, misunderstood or incomplete.

Kamloops-ThompsonCariboo MP Cathy McLeod said she knew fellow Conservative Jim Hillyer as a colleague and family man, but learned more about his life after he died.

Hillyer, a 41-year-old MP from Alberta, died in his office after returning to Ottawa this week following surgery to treat an infection in his leg.

He was found in his office on Wednesday morning.

“It’s interesting when someone dies and people pay tribute that you learn so much,” McLeod said.

“There were many things I didn’t know.”

Among them were Hillyer’s reputation as an accomplished

violin player and singer.

“I knew him as a family man who was passionate about his community,” McLeod said, adding she is shocked at his passing.

Interim Conservative leader Rona Ambrose wiped away tears as she rose in the House on Wednesday, referring to Hillyer as a colleague and friend with a goofy sense of humour who used his determination to champion causes including cancer advocacy and justice system reform.

“When you talked to Jim, it was like talking to a neighbour,” she said. “It was clear he loved his life, he loved his wife, he loved his community and he loved his job.’’

Ambrose described him as a dedicated husband and father and a man of strong faith and

conviction.

A bouquet of red roses sat on his desk in the chamber Wednesday as leaders rose to pay tribute.

Among those who admitted to not knowing him well was Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who Hillyer once called “Pierre Trudeau’s pompous parliamentary prince.’’

Trudeau said there is a lesson to be learned from Hillyer’s death — that MPs should spend more time getting to know one another.

Hillyer was first elected to the House of Commons in 2011 in Lethbridge.

Hillyer was a cancer survivor and had a bone marrow transplant in 2003.

He leaves a wife and four children.

he al-Mohammed family has experienced the quintessential Canadian reality — mom Reem spent hours in the ER with her baby, wondering what was causing the delay.

Having fled the horrors of their homeland of Syria and seeing Canada as a big, strong, welcoming developed country, she was surprised when she took Yaman, 20 months, to Royal Inland Hospital because he had a high fever and chest congestion.

The youngest of her three children, he has other significant health issues and, like any other mom, Reem was worried about her sick baby.

Speaking through friend and interpreter Ali Al-Saeed, Reem said she thought there would be more doctors in Canada, but is learning how the system works.

Her husband Khaled is also waiting to see a specialist to treat a

leg injury he received when the family was living in a tiny place in Lebanon, having fled the fighting at home.

Daughter Ineam, 10, has had another typical Canadian experience, one that was much more positive.

She has gone skiing at Harper Mountain and, she proclaimed, she’s excellent at it — and loves it.

She wants to do more — go swimming, for example — but having only been in Kamloops since Dec. 31, she and her family are still dealing with culture shock on top of the trauma they’ve lived through as they watched their homeland tear itself apart.

They miss Syria, Reem said, a sentiment Khaled echoed.

It’s their home, but

it’s one they don’t think they’ll be returning to for a long time, if ever.

There is more family still there and in Lebanon. Khaled’s mother is in Syria, but she is safe, he said.

His sister and brotherin-law, however, were killed during the fighting and no one knows where their three children, ages five, 11 and 12, are now.

Reem’s father died before the current conflict began, but her mother is in Syria.

A sister and brother are in Lebanon, but life there is not easy, she said. The Lebanese people don’t want the Syrians there and violence continues.

During the two years they lived in Lebanon, they rarely left the place where they were staying.

When they did, their children were bullied, so Reem, again in mother mode, wouldn’t let them go out. The older two children were not allowed to go to school, so sevenyear-old Mustafa arrived in Kamloops never having been in a classroom.

Now he loves it.

Reem said he keeps getting up at 6 a.m. and wants to get to school right away.

Mustafa said he loves learning, really likes his teacher “and Canada is great.”

The family is living in a small suite near Kamloops Airport, a location that makes it difficult for them to get together with other Muslim families who live in Kamloops, including many other refugees who have arrived in recent months.

Reem said that’s one of the hardest things for the family and she’s hoping they can find another place to live, one that, if not closer to their growing community, is at least on

a better bus route to make it easier for them to come together.

She’s also struggling with the language.

While Khaled is learning English through Kamloops Immigrant Services, she isn’t comfortable yet going out for classes. She would not go without Yaman, she said, but fears he would make it difficult for her to pay attention to the class.

For Canadians, a situation like that would be solved by having dad, an older sibling or a babysitter step in, but that’s not the culture from which the al-Mohammed family comes.

The father is the protector, the person who does the shopping and earns the living, while the mother takes care of the family and home.

Both said they’re starting to learn how Canada is different in that family dynamic, but Reem and Khaled said they’re also struggling with it, Reem in particular.

Volunteers from Refugees and Friends Together (RAFT), the Kamloops organization that has sponsored many refugees through the years, go with her in the mornings as she walks Mustafa and Ineam to school, with Yaman in a stroller.

It’s taken some time, RAFT member Heidi Coleman said, for Reem to feel comfortable with that basic Canadian reality.

But, Reem said with a laugh, she’s getting better at doing things she would never have done in Syria.

Although she loves skiing, Ineam said she isn’t too fond of winter.

She also loves school and friends she has made and wishes her mother wouldn’t worry so much about her.

She has a career in

mind — she wants to be an artist, perhaps a photographer.

Mustafa also knows what he’d like to do when he grows up.

He wants to join the Canadian army and help defend our airports.

Reem also knows what she wants in her future — peace.

Since they walked into their new world in the late afternoon of Dec. 31, the alMohammed family has had a strong group of volunteers supporting them.

Refugees and Friends Together (RAFT) has sponsored many refugees through the years, finding homes for them, providing translators when needed, getting them to appointments — helping them adapt.

Yesterday, when KTW visited the family in their North Shore home, volunteer Heidi Coleman came along.

Coleman does what she can, particularly on weekends, to support the work RAFT and the city’s Islamic Association does to help the new arrivals navigate what is a foreign language and culture.

When asked why she does it, Coleman has a blunt answer: “I don’t know how people are not doing this.”

She spoke of her own immigrant family arriving in Montreal and faced with making a home. It was easier for them, she said, because the Quebec city already had a large Jewish community — but it still had its challenges.

Her family’s story is what saw her find time during a trip to Vancouver to look for some specific spices the family wanted because they find Canadian food much different than their food.

But it’s also why Coleman told the family to stop buying pizzas in boxes and showed them how to make their own.

On Saturday, April 2, the Kamloops Islamic Association, with support from the TRU Faculty Association’s equity committee, is holding a fundraiser dinner at Our Lady of Perpetual Help parish centre, 635 Tranquille Rd. The menu includes butter chicken, naan, samosa, chicken pasta, rice, salads and desserts.

A mother was in the park with her daughter when a vehicle with a lone male inside stopped at the park and began watching her young daughter playing. As the mother and daughter left the park the vehicle appeared to follow the two for a short period before driving off.

The vehicle is described as a new, silver, four-door car with tinted windows and a BC licence plate beginning with the letter V. The male is described as a Caucasian male in his mid-30s, with a long beard, tanned skin and wearing a black ball cap.

The police would like to remind parents to talk to their children about stranger awareness and report any incidents.

TWO HOMES BROKEN INTO On Saturday, March 19, two homes in two different locations in the city were broken into. In both cases, the patio doors were forced open.

The first break-and-enter took place on 1300 block of Ord Road, where a rear patio door was forced open and the suspects took personal identification. The stolen identification has been recorded by police.

The second break-and-enter occurred at a residence on the 1500 block of Summit Drive. Once again, a rear patio door was forced open.

The suspect searched the entire home, but it is unknown what was taken at this point as the owners are away.

In most break-and-enters a suspect will knock on the front door of the home in the daytime.

If no one answers, they will go to the back of the house to avoid detection and force open the door.

Do not become a victim to these criminals — report any suspicious activity to the police.

SUSPECT CAUGHT ON CAMERA On the morning of Tuesday, March 15, at approximately 8:15 a.m., a lone male entered the McGill Student Housing Office and took a couple of items. The male entered while staff were occupied with another matter, and took a wallet and cell before departing the office. The suspect was caught on the surveillance camera and is described as a Caucasian male in his mid20s, with short dark hair. He was wearing a dark hoodie with a red star on the back, jeans, white Nike runners and was carrying

a black back pack over his shoulder.

This is a good reminder to be aware of who is in the building, whether you are in the student housing office or any facility, and question people who do not seem to belong there. If you are not satisfied with an answer, contact the security for the building or the police. They will attend to determine who this person is.

HOT: The debate that continues to rage following yesterday’s verdict in the Jian Ghomeshi trial.

The former CBC Radio host was acquitted on charges of sexually assaulting three women, with the judge reserving harsh criticism for the complainants and their testimony.

There were the expected protests outside the Toronto courthouse and various notations that an acquittal does not necessarily mean the incidents did not occur as the women claimed they did.

What is clear is Ghomeshi’s defence made mincemeat out of the Crown’s case.

The former Q host is back in court in June on another charge of sexual assault.

NOT: What appears to be a particularly deadly dose of heroin on the streets of Kamloops.

Police and paramedics were called to the downtown core on Wednesday afternoon to treat three men who had apparently overdosed. A 41-year-old man died and two others were treated at Royal Inland Hospital.

Later that night, there were three more calls for overdoses, with all three people treated and released from hospital. At least two of those three calls involved intravenous use of heroin.

All users need to heed this warning and ensure they know what it is they are taking.

Power Rangers will be shooting here next month, while Maze Runner has been filming in Cache Creek and casting is underway for a movie based on Indian Horse, a book by local author Richard Wagamese.

Magical moments await

I

n early 2010, the Olympic Torch arrived in Kamloops.

It was paraded through Hillside Stadium as thousands of people packed the facility on a cold — but not too cold — night.

I brought my kids to the event.

They were then 11 and eight and a bit interested in finding out what all the excitement was about.

As we stood on the frozen turf, helping form two long lines between which various dignitaries ran and walked with the torch, the magnitude of the moment suddenly hit my pre-teen daughter.

As Sen. Nancy Green Raine jogged by and my daughter managed to touch the magical lit torch, my daughter turned to me and positively squealed: “This is the greatest night of the life!”

That moment on that night in a small city in the Interior of B.C. was, for her, like being at the Olympics.

It was the spectacle of the celebration, the vibe that was palpable to all who gathered, that soaked into her young mind, convincing her this was a big deal.

My son was equally impressed, but more so with seeing an NHL legend like Mark Recchi only a few feet away.

It was only one stop among many as the Olympic Torch made its way to Vancouver, where it would like the cauldron to start the 2010 Olympic Winter Games.

But for kids like mine — and, I suspect, for kids like them throughout that stadium that night — a simple stop on an

MUSINGS Olympic journey that is done every two years was monumental.

That wonderful night six years ago was brought to mind as Kamloops prepares to welcome the world in the form of the best eight women’s hockey teams on the planet.

And it could be this event, the 2016 World Women’s Hockey Championship, that affects Kamloops kids as much as that Torch relay touched the hearts of my offspring.

Those who were in Sandman Centre (then known as Interior Savings Centre) two years ago for the final of the 4 Nations Cup between Canada and the United States experienced a moment that will stay with them forever when Brianne Jenner scored the shootout winner to give Canada the title.

The celebration on the ice and in the stands was as robust as any Stanley Cup or Olympian revelry.

• Meanwhile, for those of a certain vintage, another hockey event next week will bring back memories of the halcyon days

of the city’s beloved Kamloops Blazers.

Because of the women’s world hockey tourney — and fans should thank the tournament for creating this gem — the Blazers will return to Memorial Arena on Tuesday night for Game 3 of the opening-round playoff series against the Kelowna Rockets.

As of this writing, the game is likely sold out — and rightly so.

The old barn on Victoria Street is where the Blazers laid the foundation of excellence before moving into the new Riverside Coliseum (as it was known in the era before naming rights).

In fact, the last time the Blazers took to the ice in Memorial for a Western Hockey League game, it was a momentous contest.

It was May 5, 1992, Game 7 of the Western Hockey League championship series between Kamloops and Saskatoon.

The winner moves on to the Memorial Cup tourney in Seattle; the loser goes home.

The Blazers coasted to an 8-0 win and went on to win the 1992 Memorial Cup, the first of three national titles in four years.

It could be a fine omen for this suddenly hot team, which begins its series against the Rockets tonight in Kelowna.

If you can get a ticket to Tuesday’s game, do so.

STONE: DISABILITY ASSISTANCE HAS INCREASED Editor: Since the release of the recent provincial budget, there has been significant misunderstanding about our government’s support for persons with disabilities and, specifically, as related to their transportation needs.

Despite the budget containing $170-million in new funding to increase assistance rates for all persons with disabilities, this has somehow been described as everything from a bus-pass clawback, to taking away assistance, to an example of government giving with one hand and taking away with the other.

Nothing could be further from the truth.

The rationale for this new funding was our government’s decision to address the reality that, currently, not all persons with disabilities are treated fairly across B.C. with respect to supporting their transportation needs.

Let’s take a closer look at the three different levels of transportation support currently provided to persons with disabilities.

Under the current system, 20,000 persons with disabilities receive a special transportation subsidy, which is paid annually and equates to $66 per month.

These individuals will continue to receive this support. They will also receive an additional $11 per month beginning Sept. 1.

A second group of 35,000 people currently receives a $52 monthly benefit in the form of a subsidized bus pass.

For all of these individuals who wish to continue to receive this subsidized bus pass, they will be able to do so — and they will also receive an additional $25 per month beginning Sept. 1.

(Note there is also an administration fee of $45 per year, which continues to apply.)

A third group of 45,000 people currently

receives nothing to assist them in their transportation needs (including no special transportation subsidy and no subsidized bus pass).

To correct this unfairness, these individuals will receive an additional $77 per month as of Sept. 1.

At the end of the day, all persons with disabilities will receive the same assistance levels and have the choice as to how to best meet their unique transportation needs.

Admittedly, this has been poorly communicated by government, though it remains a fact government is increasing assistance for persons with disabilities by $170 million.

While there is more to do, this should not be couched as anything other than the positive news that it is.

manufacturing.

Yet Bombardier intends to build an aircraft that has no buyers due to its high cost.

Now the company is laying off Canadian workers in favour of manufacturing the aircraft using cheaper offshore plants, such as those located in China.

Therein lies the problem with manufacturing in Canada — it is just too expensive compared to global competition.

Now compare Bombardier with the KGHM-Ajax project.

Where Bombardier can use offshore manufacturing, KGHM needs to operate its mining production locally as the mineral deposit cannot be moved.

Where the taxpayer is expected to support Bombardier with public dollars, KGHM is not asking for any taxpayer money to start its production of metals.

Where Bombardier

cannot compete with global pricing for the product it is trying to sell, Ajax will produce metals for sale to a growing world demand with set pricing.

And the biggest difference: Where Ajax is required to go through stringent review that includes economic and social impact, Bombardier was provided $1 billion of taxpayers’ money without any consultation or review.

We need resourceextraction projects to go ahead in order to have a healthy and balanced economy.

That requires allowing at least some projects to proceed.

We need to defend ourselves from attacks by those who have personal agendas and think that none, including Ajax, should ever be permitted.

The 2015 IIHF Women’s World Championship isn’t far from the mind of anyone in the Team Canada locker room.

Facing off against the United States in the goldmedal game for the 16th time in the championship’s 16 years, Canada suffered a heartbreaking defeat, losing 7-5 to the Americans and settling for their fifth silver medal in the last six tournaments.

The Maple Leaf’s last gold medal was slowly becoming a distant

memory, won in the 2012 in championship in Burlington, Vt. Skating in Penticton for pre-tournament action, Canadians who were in Malmö last year still feel the sting of the loss. Those who weren’t still want to avenge it.

“I think, definitely, it’s in the back of our minds that we want to reclaim the world championship and that’s definitely a goal,” Canadian defenceman Tara Watchorn told KTW. She — along with 16 of her 23 of her teammates in Kamloops — was in Malmö for the loss to the Americans.

“But at the same time, every year the team’s a little different and some of the rookies now have a lot of experience coming in and we’re really starting to gel. So I think we just want to keep that going and keep improving as a team. We feel good about Kamloops and hopefully it all comes together in the end.”

Canada will play its final pre-tournament game tomorrow, a 6 p.m. contest against Sweden at Sandman Centre.

Fans of the tournament won’t have to wait long before the goldmedal grudge match,

with Canada and the United States opening preliminary play against one another at Sandman Centre on Monday at 7:30 p.m.

The tournament hosts have brought an experienced lineup to Kamloops.

Sixteen players were in the Tournament Capital for the 4 Nations Cup in 2014, a tournament in which Canada defeated the United States in a shootout to repeat as champions at the annual tournament — considered the third-most prestigious behind the Olympics and the world championship — which

also includes teams from Sweden and Finland.

Thirteen members of the 2016 world championship squad won gold at the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia and only two players in Kamloops are making their debuts at worlds.

“We’re looking fast,” said goaltender Emerance Maschmeyer, whose brother, Bronson, played three seasons for the Kamloops Blazers.

She and veteran teammate Charline Labonté are expected to carry the bulk of the load between the pipes in Kamloops.

Peter Soberlak carefully reminds listeners throughout the interview he is but a small part of the Kamloops Blazers’ second-half about-face.

He’s just one of those tiny cogs that help the big wheel turn.

The team’s mental-performance coach speaks about collective efficacy and the gratification he found in watching a fragile 0-6 group fight itself out of the WHL basement and into the playoffs.

Sitting behind his desk at Thompson Rivers University, where he is the chairman of the physical-education department, Soberlak calmly lays out reasons why the Blazers, while not playofftested, should be able to handle the heat.

“There are times when the pressure is on, but I think we’ve shown we can handle those situations,” said Soberlak, who has a bachelor’s degree in psychology from UBC and a master’s degree in sport and exercise psychology from Queen’s University.

“Three months ago, we were sitting on the edge of our seats thinking, ‘When’s it coming?’ Now, I don’t feel that when I watch

them,” Soberlak continued.

“Connor [Ingram] is solid. We trust him. We rely on him and the players in front of him have understood that if you do the simple things right, we’ll come out ahead in those situations.”

Soberlak, 46, acknowledges he sometimes speaks in cliches — play the game the right way, one shift at a time, stick with the game plan — and explains there is no way around it, especially when talking about a Don Hay-coached team.

“The cliches are true and it’s taken a while for the players to buy into that plan, that it’s a team game and you have to work together to get those results,” said Soberlak, a Kamloops product and former Blazer.

“I played for Don when I was 12 and 13 years old and in my first year in the [WHL].

“He sets the bar high for everybody. Don challenges players. He’s

assertive with them. He wants the best for them. He cares about them and makes them better people and better hockey players.

I respect that.

“It’s taken time and some of the guys have had a bit of a tough adjustment to understand that, but they know now and I can see it and I can sense it when I talk to the group. They respect him and they want to work for him now.”

Soberlak credited Ingram and leaders such as Matt Needham, Ryan Rehill and Nick Chyzowski for their part in the culture change.

“Losing becomes easy when you get into a pattern,” Soberlak said. “It’s been a real pleasure to be a small part of this and watch the growth.

“I mean, just look at the sacrifice of Needham. I saw him trying to block shots with his head.”

They care for each other. They believe in each other. They understand the goal, but they don’t focus on it. They think only of the next task at hand.

Soberlak hammered those points home, but said hiccups are inevitable and when off nights happen, coaches and players need to avoid panic and instead return to fundamentals.

As for the Kelowna Rockets and Game 1 of the Western Conference quarter-final tonight at Prospera Place, he said the Blazers can rely on what they’ve already accomplished to find mental zen in what’s sure to be a raucous building.

“I think we’re over the hump, in terms of that Kelowna perspective of we can’t beat them,” said Soberlak, who won a Memorial Cup with the Swift Current Broncos in 1989. “We had a hard time winning those tough games and beating those tough teams. I think that era is gone.

“It’s crunch time. Can we pull this out? Can we work together and do it? We proved it time and time again — we manage to find ways to win. It comes from collective efficacy, that belief in each other and the culture that the coaches have created.”

Soberlak did similar mentalperformance work with the Rockets before Hay asked him to join the Blazers in time for the 2014-2015 season.

From the crushing disappointment of falling two points shy of the playoffs in 2014-2015 to providing a steady voice throughout this roller-coaster ride of a campaign, Soberlak has earned

his keep, gaining the players’ trust by helping them through dark patches.

“It took us a little while [to warm up to Peter], but he came in religiously and was talking to us quite a bit,” Blazers’ forward Collin Shirley said.

“When we were down after losing to Edmonton on Hockey Day in Canada, he came in and had a good talk with us about the simple things and why we’re here.

“Having him hammer those things into our head about being prepared and making sure we’re ready to go is good. We’ve just got to listen.”

Soberlak will be watching closely this weekend and throughout the playoff drive.

“It’s been a journey and I’m so proud of the guys for sticking with it,” he said. “I think the sky is the limit toward the end of this year.”

WolfPack spring into baseball action ADAM WILLIAMS

The Thompson Rivers WolfPack has always been able to hit — that’s not expected to change with the 2016 Canadian College Baseball Conference (CCBC) season.

But what is expected to change is the demographic of the roster taking to the field at Norbrock Stadium this weekend.

Twenty-one rookies will don the black and orange this spring and will be joined by 13 returning players, just four of whom factored into the Pack’s every day roster last season.

“This year, a little bit of a rebuild year for us,” outfielder Ethan Mohan said. “We’ve got a lot of fresh faces, rookies coming in this year, just learning about the program and seeing what we’re all about.

“Now, we’re finally clicking and rolling as a team toward the end of our spring training, so getting excited for opening day.”

The club will play host to Kelowna’s Okanagan College Coyotes and Lethbridge’s Prairie Baseball Academy Dawgs on Saturday and Sunday.

Game times at Norbrock Stadium are noon and 6 p.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Sunday.

The WolfPack finished its pre-season action at 9-18 last weekend and was 17-12 in its fall exhibition campaign.

But, young or not, the Pack still hope to be contending for a league title this May. “We’ll be competitive, as always,” head coach Ray Chadwick said.

“We’ve gotten better from the fall, to the spring, to the start of spring, to Sunday. So I look at us getting better — with as young a crew as we have — getting better as we go along. Hopefully, come mid-May, we’ll be gelled together even more.”

Chadwick expects his club’s strength to again be at the dish the season, which he hopes will aid a young pitching staff, which may, at times, struggle due to inexperience.

Thompson Rivers finished first in hits (274) RBIs (158) and triples (16) and second in runs (183) and home runs (seven) last season.

Mohan led the league in batting average (.413) and triples (nine), while starting catcher

Evan Douglas was among the team’s leaders in average (.344) and RBI (22) and was error-free behind the plate, tying him for the best fielding-percentage in the conference.

“We’re going to be a pretty scrappy bunch,” Douglas told KTW. “We don’t have a lot of guys who can hit for a lot of power, so we’re going to have to string a lot of hits together, throw the ball well. We don’t have a lot of overpowering arms, so everyone has got to play and do their job basically.”

Defensively, the Wolves will utilize different lineups, with their strongest alignment taking on right-handed pitching.

The future should be bright with a wealth of young talent, Chadwick said, but as their 9-18 pre-season record showed, there may be some growing pains for a young Pack, faced with opposition rosters that are expected to be more long in the tooth.

“I expect us to be at the top of the league like every year — I expect nothing else with that,” Douglas said.

“Hopefully we carry that into playoffs and take home a championship.”

Connor Dolson and the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology Ooks won the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) men’s basketball championship with a 79-74 victory over the Humber Hawks of Toronto at Keyano College in Fort McMurray.

Dolson led the Ooks with 17 points in the final and was named a CCAA second-team all-star.

Two Thompson Rivers University students were honoured by Premier Christy Clark on Monday at the Premier’s Awards for Aboriginal Youth Excellence in Sport.

given to six men and six women, recognize the athletic accomplishments of aboriginal youth, as well as their commitment to their communities and future aspirations.

Matthew Hans, who hails from Kamloops, was recognized for his lacrosse career.

The 19-year-old played goaltender for the Kamloops Venom of the Thompson Okanagan Junior Lacrosse League and also backstopped the Squamish Nation at the Under-19 World Lacrosse Challenge in 2015.

Samantha Horth, meanwhile, came to TRU from Surrey and was recognized for volleyball. The 19-year-old is an outside hitter for the WolfPack women’s volleyball team, which made a return to the playoffs in the 2015-2016 season.

Healthy schedule

The Kamloops Triathlon Club has a busy few weeks ahead, starting with the Dallas Duathlon on April 10.

Brown settles for silver

Corryn Brown brought home silver from the 2016 CIS/ Curling Canada University Championship.

The Thompson Rivers University skip, who was joined in the Kelowna event by third Erin Pincott, second Samantha Fisher and lead Ashley Nordin, fell 5-4 to the University of Alberta’s Kelsey Rocque in Wednesday’s gold-medal final.

The game went to extra ends with the score tied 4-4, but Thompson Rivers gave up a steal of one to Alberta, surrendering the victory.

WolfPack dole out athletic awards Josh Wolfram and Iuliia Pakhomenko were named the TRU Sports Task Force Male and Female Athletes of the Year last night, accepting the awards at the annual WolfPack awards banquet in the Campus Activity Centre.

Wolfram, a fifth-year forward, was one of the best basketball players in Canada in 2015-2016 and led the Wolves to a Canada West silver medal and their first appearance at the CIS national championship.

The Dr. Roger H. Barnsley Scholar Athlete of the Year award was given to women’s basketball player Taiysa Worsfold and men’s swimmer Jagdeesh Uppal.

Worsfold was a four-time academic all-Canadian during her tenure at TRU and is expected to make it five straight when the awards are released this year.

Uppal, meanwhile, is a strong student and was also recognized

with the Canada West Community Athlete Volunteer Award earlier this year for his work at Royal Inland Hospital.

The Cliff Neufeld Leadership Award was given to women’s crosscountry runner Alesha Miller and men’s volleyball player Graham Stoliker. Both players were heavily involved in community service initiatives.

Athletics director Ken Olynyk recognized Reese Pribilsky of the men’s basketball team and Katie Woo of the

women’s volleyball team, both graduating players, with his Directors Award, based on their community involvement and dedication to WolfPack programs.

Men’s basketball forward Volodymyr Iegorov was named the Newcomer of the Year, becoming the first male athlete to win the award.

“The team is really skilled,” Maschmeyer continued. “There’s a lot of experience on the team and there’s also some new faces. I think it’s a good mix.

We’re starting to mesh really well.”

The world championship’s A Pool includes the top four teams from the 2015 championship — Canada, the United States, Finland and Russia — while the B Pool includes the bottom three teams — Sweden, Switzerland and Japan — and the newly promoted Czech Republic, which has only played in the tournament’s elite division once before (2013).

Canada last won gold on home soil in 2007, when the tournament was played in Winnipeg and Selkirk, Man., and the Red and White defeated the U.S. 5-1 in the gold-medal game. Only Labonté and forwards Meghan Agosta and Hayley Wichenheiser are holdovers from that roster.

“This is my third world championship and it’s my first one on home soil and I’m beyond excited,” Watchorn said.

“The crowds are amazing, the hype and atmosphere around the rink — it’s unexplainable. I’m just really excited to get going and to experience it.”

Maschmeyer, too, was anxious to start her first world championship in Canada when she spoke with KTW. But, maybe more exciting is the opportunity to replace last year’s silver medal with this year’s gold.

“We haven’t openly stated it, but we can feel it,” the goaltender said of Canada’s 2015 loss to the Americans.

“It leaves a chip on our shoulders and gives us motivation to get gold this year.

You don’t want any [other] country to win, but we don’t want the U.S. to win for sure.

“We’re planning on taking the gold.”

PHILADELPHIA — Let some of the other top seeds lose and blow up NCAA Tournament brackets.

A safer wager these days is betting all the cheese curds on Wisconsin to make a deep run in March.

The Badgers (22-12) are as much a staple of the tournament this time of year — and that first weekend in April — as any traditional blue-blood program.

Wisconsin is two wins away in the East Regional from becoming the first program since UCLA (2006-2008) to make three straight Final Fours.

The magnitude of such a feat hasn’t been lost on the seventhseeded Badgers.

“We didn’t have anybody in our locker room that had gone through ups and downs,’’ coach Greg Gard said. “You were 66-12 in the last two years. Two Final Fours, 66-12. That’s not the normal college basketball athlete’s experience. They’ll

usually have to go through some form of adversity.’’

Notre Dame (23-11) is standing in Wisconsin’s way and ready to throw some adversity at the Badgers tonight at Philadelphia’s Wells Fargo Center.

The football school found some of its hoops mojo last season when it at last reached the Elite Eight under coach Mike Brey.

The sixth-seeded Irish enjoyed playing a spot in the Final Four so much, they are back again, trying to take the next step.

Expect a close one: Notre Dame won its first two tourney games by seven points and one point and Wisconsin has wins by four and three points.

CLEVELAND — Back before he rocketed into the NFL as a freakish touchdown-maker, before the knee injury and his downfall in Washington, Robert Griffin III was convinced he’d play for the Browns.

During pre-draft workouts in Arizona, Griffin and his agent were set for Cleveland to be his home.

“We were ready then,’’ Griffin said, “and we are more than ready now.’’

Four long, trying years later, Griffin has a chance to revive a career that once seemed unstoppable.

No longer viewed as one of football’s brightest and flashiest players but rather a reclamation project, Griffin signed a twoyear, $15.75 million contract yesterday with the Browns, a team on

a perpetual mission to find a franchise quarterback.

RG3 is beginning his second act.

Griffin hasn’t been the same since his dazzling rookie season in Washington in 2012, when the former Heisman Trophy winner — possessed with a rocket arm, a tailback’s speed and endless swagger — took the league by storm.

However, his next three seasons were curtailed by injury and clouded by controversy and the 26-year-old found himself without a team when the Redskins released him March 7.

The Browns, who tried unsuccessfully to trade so they could draft him in 2012, are giving him another shot.

“I’m just excited to come in and compete,’’ Griffin said. “Nothing’s ever been given to me in my life, so I just want

to go out and compete with the guys and grow with this team. I feel like that’s all I’m really focused on. I cherish the opportunity to get another chance to play this beautiful game.’’

He’s been given no promises by the Browns, who have the No. 2 overall pick in this year’s draft and are expected to take a quarterback — presumably California’s Jared Goff or North Dakota State’s Carson Wentz.

The Browns recently released troubled quarterback Johnny Manziel, once considered the team’s saviour.

Griffin spent last season watching from the sideline, where he learned more about life than anything he could find in a playbook. He set out to restore his name — and image — with the hope there would be a next chance.

Lawrence Aeichele, 94, passed away peacefully November 11, 2015 with his sister Pearl and brother-in-law Marcel Greffard by his side. He will be sadly missed by sister’s Irene, Jean, Pearl and many nieces and nephews.

Lawrence was born in Yorkton, Saskatchewan and moved to BC with his family in 1939. He worked for the CPR for many years until he became a custodian with the Kamloops School Board and eventually retired in Kamloops.

Lawrence touched many lives and gave encouragement and kindness to anyone who needed it. He never failed to tell his family that he loved them.

Bradley James Gardner November 6, 1957 - March 10, 2016 We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of our beloved Bradley James Gardner on Thursday, March 10, 2016 at the age of 58. He passed away quietly, surrounded by family at Vancouver General Hospital after a four year long battle with lymphoma.

He is survived by his wife of 25 years Paula, his sons Jackson and Noah, as well as his brother Bob and his sister Beth (Maurice). He also leaves behind cousins, his aunt, nieces and nephews and his in-laws. He was predeceased by his father Norman in 2006 and his mother Isabel in 2008.

Brad was a loving husband and father, as well as a loyal friend and an all-around kind and gentle soul. He will be deeply missed for his humour and resourcefulness, as well as his calm and friendly nature.

Truly a thinking man, Brad was always happy to use his knowledge and many skills to help anyone with any problem they may have had.

Although he only lived a short 58 years, from frequent heli-skiing, to scuba and sky diving in his younger years, or embarking on trips such as travelling through the Mongolian desert in his later years, Brad truly lived life to the fullest.

That said, his favourite place to be was at home with his family and cats Ozzie and Flash.

Always a dedicated Denver Broncos fan, Brad was overjoyed to see his team win the 2016 Super Bowl from his hospital bed in Vancouver.

The family would like to thank the hospital staff at VGH, as well as the staff at the Jean C. Barber Cancer Lodge, and the nurses on the 8th floor of Royal Inland Hospital for their care and support.

Ask DRAKE Brian passed away at the Royal Inland Hospital peacefully on Friday, March 18th, at the age of 84, with his wife and loved ones at his side.

He was born in 1932 in Morecambe, U.K., the youngest of six children, and educated in Blackpool.

As a young man he was trained as a master butcher and joined the army at age 18 in the RASC. He was deployed to Malaya where his unit did the furthest penetration into the Malayan jungle. He was lucky to survive and on returning to civilian life in Britain he wanted a better opportunity for himself and his wife.

Kamloops offered many work opportunities and he worked in the meat department at Woodward’s for 11 years and then pursued other business opportunities for the rest of his working life. He enjoyed many activities in Kamloops such as skiing at Todd Mountain with Jim McConkie, volunteering with riding groups, raising and training horses on a small farm, and playing golf at his favourite course, Rivershore.

Brian was happily married for 62 years and is survived by his wife Joan. A private Celebration of Life will be held in his memory in the near future.

John (Jack) Ernest Hamilton April 1, 1933 - March 16, 2016 On March 16, 2016, Jack passed away peacefully at home with his family. He had spent his entire life on Campbell Range where he acquired his first ranch with his wife Pat. They raised two children Joe and Cathy. Jack also leaves behind Cathy’s husband Duight and their two children Christy and Tori, who Jack affectionately called “the Muskrats”; his two sisters Margaret and Doreen (Art); brothers-in-law Graham (Darrell) and Ken (Sue), and numerous nieces and nephews.

Jack and Pat had a rewarding life on the ranch and even through retirement, Jack still enjoyed watching over cattle which came to the ranch to graze from spring to fall. During his retirement, Jack enjoyed a new passion, aviation. He built a helicopter and plane and then went on to own two more planes.

Jack made many lifelong friends through ranching and aviation as well as his guiding business. Until the day of his passing, he enjoyed a lifestyle where he lived on his terms. Jack will be missed deeply and the void he has left although large will be filled with our loving and happy memories.

For this is not good-bye but so long until we meet you in Heaven.

As requested, there will be no formal service, but the family will be holding a Celebration of Life later this spring.

There will be no funeral as per Jack’s request.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in memory of Brad to the Canadian Cancer Society.

Bob Harrison 1944 – 2016

Robert Donnie (Bob) Harrison passed away suddenly at his residence in Pritchard, BC in the early hours of Saturday, March 12, 2016 at the age of 72 years.

An overflowing group of family and friends gathered in the Pritchard Community Hall on Sunday, March 20th at 11:00 a.m. for a Celebration of Life Service with close friend Mike Pagdin presiding. His daughters Lynnette and Sheryl shared the eulogy, with a tribute by granddaughter Charli. Music was led by Liz and Corey Webber. The community hall ladies group served the beef on a bun provided by family followed by refreshments kindly supplied by local church members and friends for the Reception that followed.

A true pioneer of Pritchard, as his great-grandparents settled on the Ranch in 1905. Bob loved farming, his cattle, friends and most of all his family. Bob was born in Kamloops, BC on February 29, 1944, making his life joy living and ranching on the family homestead. Part of his career included various trucking, with real passion working in the hay season, and with related equipment.

Predeceased by his grandparents Ellen and William Harrison, parents Eileen and Bob Harrison, brother and sister-in-law Ken and Shirley Harrison.

Beloved husband of Barb, father of Lynnette (Marc) Kies and Sheryl (Nathan) Wurtz. Bob also had five grandchildren that he loved dearly - Emma, Danieka, Jakob, Charli and Greta; also sisters Roberta (Wil) Hartman of Surrey, Susan (Doug) Inkster of Chase, brother Allan (Jean) Harrrison of Kamloops, many nieces and nephews, and a host of longtime friends.

Power of Christ’s resurrection

I

thank God for the resurrection of Jesus Christ and what it means to a secular world.

The Bible clearly declares that one day all people will be resurrected (1 Corinthians 15:22).

Psalm 16, written

by King David, is a mystery psalm whose full explanation is found only in the New Testament.

One of the lines in it reads: “You will not leave my soul in sheol, nor will you allow your Holy One to see corruption.”

But David’s body did decay in the end.

What then did he mean by those words?

There’s something puzzling about it when we read it in the context of David’s life.

In Acts 2, the mystery unfolds.

On the day of Pentecost, when the Church was born, Apostle Peter quoted from David’s psalm and revealed its mystery in Acts 2:25-28.

There, Peter quoted the psalm in his explanation to the crowd in Jerusalem about the death and resurrection of Jesus, which had taken place just a few weeks earlier.

In verses 29 to 32, he explained the mystery of the psalm and cleared it up.

Psalm 16 is speaking not of the death and the potential resurrection of King David but of the Messiah himself.

This psalm is referring not to David but to the Son of David, Jesus Christ.

Apostle Paul also knew about the power of resurrection (Philippians 3:10).

In the same chapter he continues: “Our citizenship is in heaven, from which also we eagerly wait for a Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ (vs. 20,21).”

Our hope in the power of resurrection is based on the lord alone.

Whoever believes in him, though he dies, will live forever.

It is fascinating David would say the goodness of his life is nothing apart from the lord.

When one puts his trust in the living lord, it is not based on his goodness or performance.

You may think you have done good things in life — and maybe you have — but it’s not your goodness that saves you (Ps.34:8; 100:5).

I am always concerned when I run into a Christian who does not like another Christian.

I wonder if he has thought about the problem of seeing the other person in eternity.

I have never seen a day in which people need stability like they do today.

More people are going for help and counsel than ever before.

People are depressed, defeated and discouraged in record numbers — we are after something and we don’t know what it is.

There are two things upon which this stability is based: God’s constant presence and his mighty power.

David wrote: “I have set the lord always before me.”

Some of us might try to run away from God or hide from him, thinking he does not exist.

But, according to the Bible, he is as close to us as our right hand.

In those dark moments, when we don’t know up from down and all hell is breaking loose, the lord is always at our right hand.

Stability is based not only on God’s constant presence, but upon his power to sustain us when we can’t take another step.

David wrote: “Because he is at my right hand, I shall not be moved.”

By this, he means he will not be shaken to the point of falling.

The Bible describes at least three qualities true of genuine joy: Joy is an inward excitement over what God is able to do; Joy is an outward expression of confidence; Joy is a satisfying experience nothing in life can replace.

When Socrates was on his death bed, one of his disciples asked him: “Shall we live again?”

He replied, “I don’t know. I hope we will, but I simply do not know.”

Real peace is found

only when we know what’s going to happen to us when we die (2 Cor. 5:6-9).

When we read that, do our hearts express the same kind of confidence?

Are you confident that when you die, you will be with the Lord?

The power of resurrection brings a wonderful peace to our hearts.

I love to visit funeral homes. They fascinate me. The furniture is always dignified and sombre. The colours used are always muted and the morticians look serious.

In contrast to such gloomy scenes comes David’s wonderful promise: “You will not leave my soul in the grave. But many of the funerals emphasize the dead person is still in the body.”

If Jesus was not raised from the dead, I would have no desire to attend church services or preach.

Paul said it as it is: “If Jesus did not rise from the dead, you are yet in your sins.”

But, Jesus is alive.

Every lord’s day is special because it commemorates the resurrection of Jesus.

Because he lives, we also will live.

Protestors flock to courthouse with message in wake of verdict : ‘Women find Ghomeshi guilty’ THE CANADIAN PRESS

TORONTO — Jian Ghomeshi was acquitted yesterday on all charges of sexual assault and choking following a trial that sparked an emotional nationwide debate on how the justice system treats abuse complainants as well as raucous courthouse protests over the verdict.

Justice William Horkins said he was unable to rely on the testimony from the three Ghomeshi complainants, describing their memories of alleged abuse at the hands of the former CBC broadcaster as “shifting’’ and suggesting their evidence at times strayed into outright lies.

All he had to go on, not unusual in sexualassault cases, was the complainants’ credibility, which Horkins denounced without mincing words.

“What is troubling is not the lack of clarity, but the shifting facts from one telling to the next,’’ Horkins said at one point during his hour-long decision.

“In cross-examination, the value of her evidence suffered irreparable damage,’’ he said at another point, referring to one complainant’s testimony.

Horkins stressed the presumption of innocence in criminal cases is “not a favour or charity’’ and conviction requires proof “beyond

reasonable doubt.’’

Nonetheless his verdict incensed some groups who predicted it would deter women from coming forward about sexual abuse.

Ghomeshi, 48, who faces a separate sexual assault trial in June, showed little emotion at the verdict, but family members and supporters broke into broad smiles.

He then left the courthouse without commenting, but his sister said the ordeal had been extremely painful for the family.

“Jian is not a symbol to us, but a beloved brother and son,’’ Jila Ghomeshi said. “Our hardest burden has been our feeling of helplessness as we have watched him endure a punishment that was not only prior to a verdict but prior to any semblance of due process for well over a year.’’

Dozens of women chanting, “We believe survivors!’’ gathered outside the courthouse in frigid conditions, denouncing the verdict

and what they called the unfair treatment of victims of sexual assault by the justice system.

As prosecutor Michael Callaghan told a throng of media the Crown would take time to consider the judgment, a topless woman jumped in front of him yelling “Ghomeshi guilty!’’

Written on her back were the words: “Women find Ghomeshi guilty.’’

Police tackled her to the ground, handcuffed her and took her back inside the courthouse as she struggled and kicked the door.

The one-time host of the CBC radio show Q, who did not testify, had pleaded not guilty to four counts of sexual assault and one count of overcoming resistance by choking involving three women.

All three testified they were in a romantic encounter with him when he briefly turned violent in incidents dating back to 2002 and 2003.

In his ruling, Horkins took pains to stress the acquittal was not the same as saying definitively the events never happened. As is common in such cases, he said, there was “no smoking gun’’ and all he had to go on was the testimony of the three complainants.

However, he concluded, they lied, had been manipulative and hid pertinent information about the flirta-

tious and at times intimate contact they had with him following the alleged assaults. While he did not fault them for their “imperfect’’ memories, he stressed their “suppression’’ of evidence and “deceptions’’ under oath made it difficult to trust them.

“The act of suppression of the truth will be as damaging to their credibility as a direct lie under oath,’’ Horkins said.

In addition, he said, the case showed the need for vigilance about the false assumption sex-assault complainants are “always truthful.’’

Lawyer Jacob Jesin, who spoke for one of the complainants, read a statement on behalf of his client in which she thanked her supporters. The trial, she said, allowed her to face Ghomeshi and tell her story publicly for the first time.

“I always understood that a conviction would be difficult,’’ she said in the statement.

“The story may not have passed the high legal test for proof [but] it remains my position that the evidence of the substantive issues is truthful.’’

Deb Singh, who works at a Toronto rape-crisis centre, called the acquittal disappointing but not surprising.

“This is not the first time the judge has used rape myths to get perpetrators off,’’ Singh said outside court.

NO APPEAL ON PATIENT POT RULING THE CANADIAN PRESS

OTTAWA — Health Minister Jane Philpott said the federal government will not appeal a Federal Court decision which struck down a ban on medicinal marijuana patients growing their own pot.

Philpott said the government respects the February decision.

She also says the government will move to address medicinal marijuana regulations in response to the concerns of the court.

Government upholds decision allowing medical marijuana patients to grow own weed In his decision, Judge Michael Phelan suspended the ruling for six months to allow Ottawa to rewrite the law.

The regulations were first introduced in 2013 and required patients to buy can-

nabis from licensed producers instead of growing their own.

The Federal Court ruled after four British Columbia residents challenged the Harper-era legislation, arguing it violated their charter rights.

“The justice system in itself has not taken any real measures to create new ways of gathering evidence for the purpose of ending sexual violence in our communities.’’

Speaking to TV station CP24, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said he considered the issue of violence against women “very important’’ and would be looking at ways to encourage victims to come forward.

“These are the kinds of discussions we need to be having as a society that values equality and respect for women,’’ Trudeau said.

At trial, the systematic dismantling of the complainants’ testimony by defence lawyer Marie Henein was often dramatic.

In particular, Henein was able to produce emails and photographs that put the lie to their statements that they had no or only fleeting contact with Ghomeshi after the alleged assaults.

For example, one of them sent him friendly emails and a bikini photo — something she never told police or prosecutors.

Actress Lucy DeCoutere, the only complainant who can be named, sent him an email hours after the alleged assault to say she wanted to have sex with him and another letter days later that ended with the words: “I love your hands.’’

TORONTO — Legal experts and women’s groups say the verdict in the Jian Ghomeshi sex assault trial shines a spotlight on everything that’s wrong with the system designed to find justice in such cases.

They say that Justice William Horkins had little choice but to acquit the former CBC star on all charges, since testimony from all three witnesses was effectively destroyed in court.

University of Toronto law professor Brenda Cossman says witnesses are held to unrealistic standards to prove their cases in the current court system.

Nicole Pietsch of the Ontario Coalition of Rape Crisis Centres agrees, saying society needs to keep re-evaluating its preconceived notions of what’s acceptable in a sex assault case.

Amanda Dale of the Barbara Schlifer Commemorative clinic say she’s optimistic that advocates will see the verdict as further reason to fight for changes to the justice system.

Glasgow, N.S., was originally charged with attempted murder but pleaded guilty to aggravated assault.

Clifford had admitted saying to his daughter: “I wish you would . . . die already.’’

He also told police he had been thinking about stabbing her.

One psychologist told the court that Clifford’s mental illness appears to be linked

to his career with the Canadian Armed Forces.

Nova Scotia provincial court Judge Del Atwood said the 45-year-old had experienced a tragic life after he left the military.

He was later diagnosed with PTSD, a major depressive disorder and a panic disorder associated with agoraphobia — the irrational fear of

crowded spaces.

“His years in military service were very tough,’’ Atwood said in his decision.

“Mr. Clifford’s civilian life has been very unhappy, and it affected his family profoundly.’’

Clifford and his wife separated in April 2013, the judge said.

Court heard Clifford and his daughter were smoking marijuana

on Nov. 30, 2014, when an argument ensued.

Clifford later told police he pushed her off a chair, placed his hands around her throat and tried to choke her to death.

When he thought she was dead, he called 911 and told police he was sure he had killed the teen.

The girl has since fully recovered

from the attack.

The judge said there were several mitigating factors in the case, including Clifford’s lack of a criminal record, his honourable discharge from the military, his cooperation with police and a pre-sentence report that indicated his actions were out of character.

As well, a psychologist assessed Clifford as

a low risk to reoffend in a violent way.

However, the judge said that attacking someone under the age of 18 was an aggravating factor.

Both the Crown and defence recommended a four-year sentence, which the judge accepted, saying Clifford would receive 90 days credit for time already served.

OTTAWA — Elizabeth May spent more than any other federal party leader to secure her seat in last October’s election.

Financial reports filed with Elections Canada show the Green leader spent almost $230,000 to win her B.C. riding of Saanich-Gulf Islands.

The party kicked in $220,000 to pay for May’s campaign;

she was the only Green candidate to win a seat in the Oct. 19 vote.

Justin Trudeau, who led his Liberals to victory, spent just over $183,000 to hang onto his Montreal riding of Papineau.

His riding association contributed $175,000 to Trudeau’s campaign while the Liberal party kicked in almost $33,000.

Stephen Harper, whose Conservative government

was defeated, spent just over $117,000 to easily win his Calgary Heritage riding.

NDP Leader Tom Mulcair spent the least: less than $105,000 to hold his Montreal riding of Outremont.

The totals for each leader include expenses that were subject to campaign spending limits plus other reportable expenses which fell outside the cap.

eigh Kakaty’s batteries are recharged, thanks to an extended period off the road and at home with his family.

That’s a good thing, he said, because his band, Pop Evil, is heading out again for another tour, one that sees it stop in Kamloops on Sunday for a show at CJ’s Night Club.

Kakaty has come a long way from the days he thought he’d be playing for the L.A. Lakers. A basketball player, that was his true passion.

“But I can’t do what Kobe Bryant can,” he said.

er with high-school friends back in 2001.

They jammed together in his basement and landed a management deal five years later. Since 2007, the group has done almost 300 shows a year.

This tour to promote the latest release, Up, will also see the band out well into the summer, either travelling on its own or sharing the stage with Disturbed and Rob Zombie. The Kamloops show includes The Vidos, a Vancouverbased indie-punk

band, and Torontobased alt-rock band Smashing Satellites.

Although born in Michigan, Kakaty has strong Canadian roots, courtesy of his mother, who was born in Ontario.

For a while, the family called Kingston home and Kakaty has citizenship in both countries.

His family has always been supportive, Kakaty said, although there were times when he’s sure they were wondering when he’d give up music and pick a more

predictable career.

“My brother’s a lawyer, so they got their lawyer in the family,” he said.

But then they started seeing the band’s success.

“It became like, ‘Wow, this is amazing,’” he said.

While he writes the lyrics for the songs, bandmates Chaci Rio, Dave Grahs, Matt DiRito and Nick Fuelling all weigh in at some point to create the polished final version, to create the magic. There’s always pressure writing songs, Kakaty said, and he feels he’s become better at it through the years.

He’s had to learn how to separate time when the band is touring or when he’s back home in northern Michigan to focus on writing.

“If you don’t, you

lose your mind,” he said.

Footsteps (Go Higher) is the one song that made a big difference for the band.

Kakaty said the success changed their demeanour.

“It’s fun now,” he said.

The first single from Up hit No. 1 on Billboard’s mainstream rock chart and, last month, it landed at No. 8 on Billboard’s Canadian Rock chart.

While the first four albums were composed of older works, Kakaty insisted on new songs for Up — and it confirmed something for him.

“This is who we are as people. We understand our audience . . . There’s no looking back, no worries.”

And it’s something Kakaty plans to do “till the music dries up in my soul.”

“Ahh! After 10,000 years, I’m free! It’s time to conquer Earth!”

And, with those words, the Power Rangers phenomenon was born on Aug. 28, 1993.

While the TV show only lasted for three years, the brand has endured — and now arrives in Kamloops as shooting continues on the latest theatrical instalment of the band of super-powered high school students.

Kamloops will become Angel Grove, Calif., for the film, the fictional town where the Rangers lived.

Playing the superteens are R.J. Cyler as Billy/Blue Ranger, Naomi Scott as

Kimberly/Pink Ranger, Ludi Lin as Zack/ Black Ranger, Becky Gomez as Trini/ Yellow Ranger and Dacre Montgomery as Jason/Red Ranger.

Elizabeth Banks takes on the role of Rita Repulsa, the villain freed after all those centuries, an evil humanoid alien witch who has conquered many words but failed to take over Earth.

The brand is based on the Japanese show Kyoryu Sentai Zyuranger and was originally called the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers.

Robin Smith, chair of the ThompsonNicola Film Commission (TNFC), said the Kamloops area normally attracts

films that want open vistas or winding roads but, this year, there are more production companies looking to film in our city streets and in smaller community businesses.

Locations are being identified in consultation with the city, the Kamloops Downtown Business Improvement Association, Tk’emlups te Secwepemc council, local ministries, organizations and merchants.

TNFC film commissioner Vicci Weller said there will be opportunities for people to watch the action.

“I think it will be a lot of fun,” she said.

Q: Why are concrete power poles in Kamloops being changed to wood?

A: Switching concrete hydro poles out for wooden ones might seem like a step backward, but it’s not.

The transition is slowly taking place across B.C., including a number of streets in and around Kamloops.

“Concrete poles, they’ve been around a long time — since the ‘70s,” BC Hydro community relations manager Dag Sharman told KTW. “We identified a potential safety issue with the concrete poles and that’s why they’re being replaced.”

Highland Powerlines is the contractor BC Hydro has hired to switch out a number of concrete

poles in the Kamloops area, and project manager Rob Oleksyn said the issue has to do with the steel reenforcement inside the concrete.

“There’s an electrolysis issue they’re having,” he said.

“The concrete is a conductor because it’s got steel inside.

“It’s causing the bolts to fail. It’s actually deteriorating the galvanized bolt inside the concrete pole.”

Oleksyn said a worst-case scenario would likely see a downed line, but Sharman said no issues have been reported and the switch back to wood is a precautionary measure.

At one point, Sharman said, there were 10,000 concrete hydro poles in B.C. — 500 of those in Kamloops — mostly in the Lower Mainland and on Vancouver Island. There are 7,000 concrete poles remaining and the project, with an estimated cost upwards of $40-million, is slated to be complete in 2022.

Concrete poles were supposed to have had a lifespan of 80 to 100 years. Sharman said wooden poles generally require maintenance after 20 years.

he Rideau Canal, flowing between Kingston and Ottawa, was built as a defensible waterway after the war of 1812.

Although never needed for this purpose, it has continued to operate since 1832.

Thanks to 47 locks, boats can navigate the varying water elevations by floating up when the tubs are filled and dropping down when they’re emptied.

And, beyond every park-like station, are unique vistas: birdloving wetlands, sliverthin canals — some etched out of limestone, others embraced

by Canadian Shield.

It’s truly an aquatic route of untarnished beauty. But, if you’re more of an earth-lover than a water-baby, fear not.

RV-ing the Rideau can be equally rewarding. Highway 401, also known as MacDonald Cartier Freeway, is a main thoroughfare that spans the canal.

Branching away from this artery are capillary-like country roads that take RVers to Rideau riches.

All you have to do is pack, gas up and go.

Northern Section

Ottawa, Hartwells and Hog’s Back locks are located within Canada’s capital.

Here, you can take in nearby culture or pedal the path connecting these three scenic settings.

Although steamships once plied these waters, Ottawa’s international jets are now taking off just three kilometres away.

If you feel like shacking up with a little comfort, the riverside Monterey Inn overlooking this station will meet your needs.

And Heritage House shares the Rideau’s past — the struggles

From here, keep hugging Highway 34 for a little longer.

The pretty town of Perth is just up the road. Green space embraces its 200-yearold storefronts and rimming one edge is the Tay Canal, a treebordered tributary flowing into Lower Rideau Lake.

Aside from the occasional detour, Highway 15 connects the remaining eight stations (total of 15 locks).

If you’re an angler, you’ll want to catch Newboro — or at least one of its largemouth bass. Though now laidback, life here wasn’t always so.

anadians spend roughly 2,000 hours a year on the job, with few plans for filling that free time in retirement.

An RBC survey of working Canadians ages 50-plus found three quarters are unsure what they will do when they retire.

Keep your schedule busy and body active with the city’s many programs specifically for those 55-plus or take up any one of the adult cooking, gardening or music lessons.

We’ve rounded up a few:

Learn wine pairing

Release your inner sommelier with a wine-pairing class.

Sip, taste and discuss under the direction of a certified instructor.

The class will run from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at South Kamloops secondary on May 26 for red wine pairing and June 9 for white wine pairing.

Fit to line dance

For those with a love for music and dancing, attend this morning class for an hour of instructor-led line dancing.

Learn and practise every Friday.

The class runs Fridays from April 8 to May 6 and from May 20 to June 17, from 11:15 a.m. to noon at the TCC. Cost is $22.50.

Gentle touch yoga

Pickleball has been gaining popularity amongst seniors in Kamloops for a several years and, with warm weather on the horizon, outdoor courts will soon be packed with players.

Learn what the sport is all about at beginner pickleball classes running Thursdays from April 7 to June 9 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Juniper Ridge elementary.

It teaches the basic skills, techniques and rules of the game.

FOR BOOMERS What you need to know about retiring with RRIFs Making the financial transition to post-working life can be confusing – here are some pointers veryone should be familiar with the registered retirement savings plan, but as you get closer to your post-working life, there’s another registered account you need to get to know: the registered retirement income fund.

At 72, you’re no longer allowed to invest in an RRSP. In fact, you must — by government regulation — withdraw money from it.

Essentially, an RRSP converts into a RRIF, which then becomes the account you remove your money from.

For many retirees, the switch to a RRIF can be confusing.

David Ablett, direc-

tor of tax and estate planning at Investors Group, shares his advice on the benefits of a RRIF and what you need to know to make it work best for you:

Sixty-five is the magical age

While you have to convert your RRSP into a RRIF before Jan. 1 of the year you turn 72, you can make that transition at any age.

Many people wait until they are 65 to do so. At that point, you can take advantage of the pension income tax credit and pension income-splitting.

That means if you are required to take out, say, $10,000 from your RRIF in a given year, you could, if it were tax-advantageous, transfer half

of it to your spouse’s income.

Understand the ins and outs

As with an RRSP, the money in your RRIF still grows taxfree, but you are no longer allowed to put new money in.

You now have to make regular withdrawals at an increasing rate.

There is a minimum amount you have to remove but there is no maximum.

However, you will have to pay tax, based on your marginal tax rate, on whatever you take out.

“If you take a large amount from your RRIF, you could be exposing yourself to a clawback of your old age security payments,” Ablett said.

Use your TFSA for extra cash

If you are required to withdraw more money from your RRIF than you need, then take advantage of your tax-free savings account (TFSA).

You’ll have to pay taxes on the amount that is withdrawn from your RRIF, but then the money can continue to grow taxfree in the TFSA.
