Kamloops is an outdoor person’s haven. For the hiker, biker or runner, there’s a spot for everyone to find their pace. The rugged landscape provides a plethora of hiking trails for beginners and those who want to be challenged. Peterson Creek Park includes a range of trail difficulties and several entrances, including downtown. Kenna Cartwright Park offers outstanding views of Kamloops through both forested areas and grassland terrain. Other locations include Cinnamon Ridge Hoodoos, Embleton Mountain, Isobel Lake Interpretive Trail, Lac Du Bois, Mara Mountain, Pinantan Lake Mountain Ascent Park, Paul Lake Provincial Park and McConnell Lake Provincial Park. Paddle to and then hike Copper Island on Shuswap Lake with Unique Adventure Tours. Launch

inflatable boats from Shuswap Provincial Park and begin the three-hour round-trip. Located 25 minutes south of Kamloops, Stake Lake has 45 kilometres of marked trails that are great for family rides. Inks Lake is a popular dirt-biking area and is suitable for more-experienced riders. There are hundreds of kilometres of trails, from single-track trails to hill climbs. For mountain biking, Stake Lake Trails is a popular, grassy, doubletrack destination and suitable for beginner to intermediate riders. The Kamloops Bike Ranch and Sun Peaks Resort Bike Park are also renowned mountain-biking areas. Get to Stake Lake: Take Exit 366 from Highway 1/ Highway 5 in Kamloops and follow Lac Le Jeune Road south. Park near Stake Lake. Trails are to your right. Experience downtown

The Kamloops Central Business Improvement Association’s (KCBIA) Festival of Experiences is all about finding everything Downtown Kamloops has to offer any day of the year. The focus is on publicspace programming and encouraging downtown businesses to bring themselves outside by doing live demonstrations, hosting classes and bringing any number of interactive activities to the streets of the downtown core.

For those seeking music, there are myriad places to regularly hear some of the best local performers, as well as those travelling through the city, including the Blue Grotto, Commodore Grand Cafe and Lounge, Turner’s Music Studio, The Art We Are, Plaza Heritage Hotel, Cactus Jack’s Saloon and The Grind. Looking for art? Downtown is bookended by two major art venues — Kamloops Art Gallery at the east end and the Old Courthouse Cultural Centre at the west end. There’s also Hampton Gallery on Fourth Avenue, with a different featured artist monthly and there is a continuous display of works for sale and exhibi-

tions at The Art We Are on Victoria Street. During the summer, the streets themselves become an entertainment venue as the KCBIA hosts various events. The Merchants Market, running July 22 to July 25, will turn Victoria Street into arts central, with dancers, musicians and theatrical groups performing, plus blocks of sidewalk sales. It boasts the best shopping days of the summer. The Merchants Market features the most requested downtown event, the Taste of Downtown, on July 23. With the purchase of a $10 passport, patrons can visit downtown eateries for featured samples. And, in July and August, musicians from the area also take the streetside stage to perform for Live at Lunch from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesdays through Sundays.

JOIN THE FUN AT RIVERSIDE PARK

athy Sinclair is always amazed at the multitude of people who celebrate Canada Day in Riverside Park. The July 1 celebration, going on 40 years, draws 40,000 people and marks the largest arts event in Kamloops. Art in the Park brings a full day of arts exhibitions and sales, demos and performances.

More than 90 artist vendors are set to display their work at this year’s festivities — from pottery and fashion to jewelry and art. “It’s an amazing day for our artists,” said Sinclair, executive director of the Kamloops Arts Council. “It’s always a lot of fun.” This year the council is creating more of a festival atmosphere with unplugged performances by musicians and theatre artists throughout the park.

The Kamloops Arts Council will also do a raffle and give away prizes on site. Sheila Munro of Dropping Form Design, who specializes in Victorian-inspired leatherwork and fashion, is bringing her designs to Art in the Park for the sixth year in a row. “I think it’s one of the best events for artists who live in Kamloops,” she said. “I plan on attending for many

years to come.” New this year is the Oh Canada! art exhibition, which opened Sunday, June 28 and will culminate at Art in the Park. The multi-day visual arts exhibit will focus on the themes of Canada’s history, culture and identity, “whether that’s multiculturalism or a nature scene or just something Canada means to them,” Sinclair said. The city’s Canada Day fes-

enry Small loves the local music

scene. He sees it as growing, vibrant and alive — but just not necessarily at Music in the Park. “The thing is the demographic for Music in the Park is five to 95 and some bands, some really great bands, just won’t work for that demographic,” Small said of the annual summer of music he creates every year. “It’s not personal, it’s about satisfying the demographic.” It’s why, for example, he has always booked tribute bands, musicians he readily admits he used to look down on during his own music career. “But they’re the ones that always sell out,” Small said. “They’re the ones people want to hear so I’ve changed my attitude toward them because it’s about people enjoying the music.” Even before the schedule was perfected — there were some last-minute cancellations, leaving some dates to be filled — Small was happy with the program he spent the past many months putting together. “I was looking at it and there are a lot of female performers this year,” he said. “I didn’t do it consciously but there are a lot of talented women emerging now.” Experience has shown him Music in the Park needs a vari-

ety of musical genres beyond pop and tribute bands. This year, he said, Small is particularly delighted to have booked a Latin American band as well as a reggae band “from the islands.” This year, he’s also having to do programming for more special nights — longtime sponsor B.C. Lottery Corporation is celebrating its 30th anniversary while Ribfest and B.C. Living Arts’ Hijacked festival return — and that requires some specific music requests. For the lottery corporation, Small said, the theme will be disco while Hijacked will focus on Canadian music. Ribfest attendees will be entertained by a series of tribute bands. There will be plenty of local talent on the schedule but Small always works at bringing in other acts, performers who are looking for a new audience and whose music can appeal to the generations of Kamloopsians who head down to Riverside Park every night. He’s also got Friday nights booked for McDonald Park and said he thinks this year’s version on the North Shore is the best he’s done for that venue. It all kicks off on July 1 with the Canada Day celebrations and Art in the Park. After that daylong event, Music in the Park occupies the Rotary Bandshell there every night starting at 7 p.m.
