ALLEN DOUGLAS PHOTOS/KTW Nancy Klassen and her two children managed to escape a fast-spreading fire in her Westsyde mobile home on Sunday, but the home was destroyed. A Mother’s Day gift — a candle — ignited a curtain in the Warren’s Mobile Home Park trailer.

It was a present with unintended consequences. A Westsyde mom is out of a home after the candles her two children gave her for Mother’s Day led to their trailer burning on Sunday afternoon. Assistant Fire Chief Dave McMahon said Kamloops Fire Rescue (KFR) firefighters were called to the Klassen fam-

ily’s home in the Warren’s Mobile Home Park on Westsyde Road at about 1 p.m. While crews put out the fire quickly and were able to keep it from spreading to surrounding buildings, the trailer itself was unsalvageable and will have to be torn down. “Unfortunately, the very nature of the construction of a mobile home — usually unless you’re there right at the point of ignition, they’re pretty much lost,” McMahon said. An RCMP investigator has testified in a child-pornography trial that she viewed images of unclothed girls she estimated were between eight and 15 years of age. Those images were taken from discs the Crown alleges belonged to a retired schoolteacher who hid them beneath his floor. Jerry Waselenkoff, 66, is charged with a single count of possession of child pornography. His trial resumed yesterday in B.C. Supreme Court in Kamloops. RCMP Cpl. Kerry Blades estimated about 75 per cent of the discs seized contained child pornography. Examples noted in court included six videos of girls ranging in age from 8 to 15 years. The images were commonly focused on vaginal areas. Blades also noted the brand of the discs — Smartbuy — was unusual and something investigators had not seen before. What appeared to be serial numbers on a vacation photo disc found in Waselenkoff’s apartment and Smartbuy discs containing child pornography found by the contractor were close in sequence. RCMP Const. Stephen Merrick testified he was called in 2012 to the McGill Road apartment directly below Waselenkoff’s by a man doing electrical work. The man, who lived in the unit, earlier testified he found three CD cases in a ceiling area directly below Waselenkoff’s apartment and near a register vent above. He viewed some of the discs and decided to call police. Merrick said he reached in above the hole cut in the ceiling and found another wallet of discs. He seized all of them. The neighbour earlier testified Waselenkoff confronted him, telling him he was worried about his reputation and had suicidal thoughts after the discs were found. The trial is expected to continue this week.
