JUST BEEN IN AN ACCIDENT? WHAT TO DO AFTER A CRASH STEP ONE: If anyone’s injured, call 911.

Move the vehicles off the road if it’s safe to do so. Avoid discussing who’s at fault for the crash.

STEP TWO: Get details.* Record the following for all the vehicles and drivers involved in the crash: • Driver’s name, driver’s licence number, province/ state and contact info. • Licence plate and year, make and model of vehicle. • Insurance details if the vehicle isn’t from B.C. * You may also need to provide this information to the police.

FULLY CHARGED

Not everyone can afford to drive green in an electric vehicle, but for those that can, Kamloops has started building the infrastructure.

The city is home to five fastcharging stations and 13 Level 2 EV charging stations.

There are four fast-charging stations at the Kamloops Visitor Centre and one at the Tournament Capital Centre.

Fast chargers charge to 80 per cent in 30 minutes.

There is one Level 2 charger at the Visitor Centre, eight at Thompson Rivers University, one at Hotel 540, one at Kal Tire on Mount Paul Way, one at the Holiday Inn on the North Shore and one at River City Nissan.

Level 2 EV charges take four to five hours to supply a full charge.

The chargers at the Visitor Centre and at TRU were funded partly by the provincial government through the Community Charging Infrastructure fund, a $4,000 contribution for each station. It only costs the city $2 to fully charge a vehicle.

The city reviewed whether or not to charge a fee to the users but decided to hold off as a way to encourage people to invest in electric vehicles.

Glen Cheetham, energy management co-ordinator with the City of Kamloops said most of these charges are used by tourists. The city has no gauge on on how many electric vehicles are on the road in Kamloops, but Cheetham said residents are most likely charging at home.

The fast charger at the TCC has seen approximately 300 sessions, 2,198 kilowatt hours of electricity provided in two years.

“It’s a growing infrastructure. The demand is growing as well,” Cheetham said.

“We are encouraging people to try out new technology. Fifty per cent of our greenhouse gas emissions here in town are coming from vehicles.

Even if we get a few hundred people switching to an electric vehicle in town, that is a huge benefit because those vehicles are producing zero emissions.”

Tourism Kamloops is looking at leveraging the infrastructure and develop tourism packages around electric vehicles as a way to promote the area as an EV-friendly place to visit.

4X4 GROUP IS REVVING UP Kamloops is a four-wheel-drive paradise. Four-by-four users in the area congregate on a Facebook page called Kamloops 4x4, which has more that 1,900 members.

The forum offers a place for users to learn about their truck, organize offroading runs and maybe even reach out for help when in a pinch up the mountain. The group also has a buyand-sell aspect. Members are currently working on turning the group into a non-profit and establish itself as a land-user group that might be able to converse with government to determine where it’s legal and safe to 4-wheel, and offer guidance on how to curb garbage dumping and illegal wheeling.

“We try to get people to go towards the tread lightly side of four-byfouring, just because, the way things are going right now, if we can try to keep people on the trails and out of the mud, it will make four-by-fouring look a little more friendly to people who don’t know anything about it,”

said group president Charlie Denbigh.

“We live in a four-wheel-drive paradise. There’s rock, mud and trails all over the place. There are so many logging roads and trails around you can go from Kamloops to 100 Mile House without touching pavement.”

While there hasn’t been any organized runs yet this year, Denbigh said they try to do at least three major runs per year and occasional day runs.

The group also organizes clean-ups in areas of the backcountry that see a lot of dumping. Last year a clean-up in Batchelor Heights attracted over 100 trucks.

“The four-wheel-drive community is just people who want to be outside,” Denbigh said. “We don’t want to spend our time outside around other people’s garbage so we go out there and we clean it up.”

Register your off-road vehicles by June 1 Safe and responsible use of B.C.’s backcountry got a boost last fall, with the launch of the registra on system for offroad vehicles, as well as increases to safe access for highway crossings for recrea onal off road vehicles.

To provide plenty of no ce and allow for a smooth transi on, the new registra on system has been voluntary for opera on on Crown land, but will become mandatory on June 1, 2015. The combined cost of the number plate and registra on fee is $48.

Off-road vehicles operated solely on private property do not require registra on or a number plate.

Since November 2014, off-road vehicle owners can obtain a one- me registra on for off-road vehicles that is integrated within the pre-exis ng structure of ICBC’s motor vehicle registry. This has reduced implementa on costs and allows off road vehicle owners to register at any of the 900plus ICBC insurance brokers in the province.

These changes, made possible by the passing of the Off-Road Vehicle Act on March 24, 2014, support the Province’s Off Road Vehicle Management Framework. The framework helps Bri sh Columbians get out and enjoy the beauty of the province’s

backcountry and ensure off-road vehicles, including snowmobiles, are driven in a safe and environmentally responsible manner.

In addi on, changes to the Motor Vehicle Act regula ons that came into effec ve on Nov. 17, 2014, allow off-road vehicle operators greater access to highways, including the ability to: • Cross a highway without having to obtain an opera on permit if the crossing is controlled by a stop sign or traffic light.

• Cross a highway where local police authorize through an opera on permit.

• Load or unload in a parking lot without an opera on permit.

• Obtain an opera on permit with an extended term of up to two years.

To date, the Off-Road Vehicle Management Framework has been implemented in stages. Future regula ons will follow that will flesh out ORV rules of opera on, safety standards, penal es and condi ons of use for a wide range of modern ORVs, including snowmobiles, all-terrain vehicles or “quads”, dirt bikes and side-by-sides (e.g., Rhinos and Argos).

CAMPING MIGHT COST YOU A LITTLE MORE THIS YEAR  FEES HAVE BEEN RAISED To maintain high service levels in B.C. provincial parks for an increasing number of visitors, the province raised camping fees as of March 15, 2015.

While the fee schedule varies, the vast majority of provincial campsites will see a $2 per night increase, while others will see slightly larger increase in price, to a maximum of $5 per night. The last system-wide increase was in 2010.

This increase comes a er years of investment delivering capital projects aimed at a rac ng young families, offering new recrea on opportuni es and increasing a endance in provincial parks. Over the past five years, BC Parks has invested approximately $60 million in park facili es, and has approximately $700 million of investment in infrastructure that requires maintenance.

Fee increases are nominal to ensure camping remains affordable for families and visitors enjoying B.C.’s world class parks system — one of the largest protected areas systems in the world.

The most expensive campsite in the region, at $32 a night, is at Herald on Shuswap Lake. That is slightly less than the top rate in B.C. of $35 a night.

The cost of camping at Juniper Beach on the Thompson River near Savona rises to $32 a night, while Lac Le Jeune, one of the province’s most popular campsites and just 15 minutes south of Kamloops, is $23.

Rates for backcountry camping and use of sanista ons remain at $5, and fees for mooring buoys, picnic shelters and group camping are unchanged. Parking fees for day-use lots, a failed experiment from 10 years ago, are not being reintroduced.

Your truck box — Spray-on vs. drop-in liners Ever wondered about the importance of protecting your truck box? There are usually two options to choose from: Spray-on bed liner or a plastic drop-in bed liner. Today, we would like to discuss the importance of applying a spray-on liner for your truck box compared to a plastic drop-in liner.

The biggest difference between the two is a spray-on bed liner is permanent.

Since the product is permanent, everything that needs to be covered should be covered. A spray-on liner adheres to the truck box, whereas a drop-in liner doesn’t.

A plastic drop-in liner will vibrate and, over time, wear the paint away, allowing for rust and damage. With the adhesion of the spray-on liner, there will be no rubbing of paint, water getting through or rusting. A spray-on liner also won’t take up space, allowing you full use of your box.

The most common issue when comparing the two is traction. A spray-on liner is textured to allow for greater, non-slip traction. A plastic drop-in liner tends to be very slippery and if water or snow is added, it makes it even more of a hazard.

Spray-on liners don’t just stop at the box. The spray can be applied almost anywhere and depending on the product, it can be colour matched, too. Fishing families are getting additional opportunity to pass down their knowledge to the next generation, with the announcement of regulatory amendments to the Wildlife Act confirmed earlier this year

by Forests Lands and Natural Resource Operations Minister Steve Thomson.

In support of mentoring young anglers, the province has amended the regulations for age-restricted waters by making them available to anglers of all ages, provided they accompany a youth under the age of 16 or a disabled angler who is actively angling.

Many of the waters that are subject to this new regulation — now referred to as “youth-
