ina Murphy wouldn’t want sadness, tears or anything the least bit solemn to happen in Westsyde this week.

Instead, she would want cotton candy and popcorn — two of her favourite foods — laughing, dancing and fun.

If she could, she would insist there be a trampoline, too, because sometimes a kid just needs to bounce and bounce and bounce.

So, from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday, June 14, Westsyde Fellowship Church will be the scene of one happening carnival with a bouncy castle and carnival games — and the community invited to remember a little girl who never let cancer stop her from living life.

“She had a bit of a swagger,” mom Sarah said of the child they named Krystina.

“There was always a hello coming your way.”

Dad Mike describes the youngest of three sisters — older siblings are Samantha and Rebecca — as always “go, go, go.”

“Nothing held her down,” he said. “With all of the treatments, she always had a smile on her face.”

Krystina faced plenty of challenges to that upbeat character.

She was diagnosed at 3 1/3 months with trilateral retinoblastoma — can-

cer tumours in her eye and brain — and, during her eight years of life, was diagnosed with four unique forms of cancer.

Sarah said doctors have told the family their daughter’s genetic makeup was unique, with a mutation of the part of her body’s code that controls tumour growth constantly in the on position.

“She had a predisposition for it,” Sarah said of her daughter’s cancers.

“And they told us no one else with her history has lived as long as she did.”

Life for her was ongoing treatments to battle the disease, a reality that never failed to make her angry — but not because she was headed for another lengthy stay in a hospital.

“She’d get mad if she had to miss school,” Sarah said. “School was huge to her. A big part of her being angry was missing out on school.”

Krystina’s outgoing personality made her a well-known student at David Thompson elementary, almost from the day she started kindergarten there.

“We’d be walking to school and people would by saying ‘Hi Tina’,” said Mike. “I’d be like ‘We got to get to school, Tina. Who are all these people?’ and she’d just be smiling and saying hi.

“She was riding her bike one day and a truck slowed down and someone yelled out ‘Hi Tina.’

I asked her who that was and she just smiled and said ‘I don’t know.’

Tina Murphy died at Canuck Place in Vancouver on May 31.

She will be remembered this weekend with a carnival.

“And then she’d just keep smiling.”

Sarah said her daughter’s attitude always seemed based around a belief that she didn’t have time to feel sorry for herself, even as she was treated, appeared to be doing better, then had a relapse in 2009 with another brain tumour, later having treatment for an eye tumour that couldn’t be controlled.

Last August, the Murphys were told Krystina had a terminal brain tumour.

On May 31, she died at

Canuck Place, a children’s hospice in Vancouver, from complications following surgery.

It was three weeks after her eighth birthday, which this year fell on Mother’s Day. On Sunday, from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m., the church will be the site of a remembrance of the little girl who would head out to the trampoline and bounce, rain or shine, tired or energized.

Then the party begins.

A letter was sent home from Krystina’s school

inviting that community to join in the celebration of her life.

That community is just one of the many that have supported the family the last eight years, from the Westsyde community to Mike’s friends at his former job at the Kamloops Regional Correctional Centre to Kamloops itself.

“We’re hoping people who don’t want to come to the celebration will come to the carnival,” Sarah said.

“Have fun because she would want us to.”

Other trails lead over and through the natural silt bluffs offering sweeping views of the South Thompson Valley, and one trail leads to a newly built gazebo overlooking the wetlands. Weekly Traffic Update Overlanders Bridge The Fortune Drive overpass and Tranquille Road exit ramp is now re-opened to traffic.

A web cam will be installed on Fortune Drive at Leigh Road.

Columbia Street A minimum of two lanes (one each direction) will be open at all times, with three lanes open at night.

The construction window is 7 am - 5 pm, Monday to Saturday. There may be some night work as needed.

The pedestrian crossing on Columbia Street at 5th Avenue has been permanently removed. A full signal will be installed at this location as part of the project.

The south sidewalk on Columbia Street between 3rd and 6th Avenue is currently closed to all pedestrian traffic. Pedestrians are advised to use the north sidewalk and to use the crosswalk at 4th Avenue to access the south side businesses, or the crosswalk at 3rd Avenue to access the hospital.

Trucker fined for #KAMMUTE fatal Coq’ crash Tranquille overpass re-opens CAM FORTEMS

A “responsible and experienced” professional driver gave a tearful apology in Kamloops court Thursday for an accident that killed one half of a couple and left the other irrevocably disabled.

Scott McLeod pleaded guilty under the Motor Vehicle Act to driving at speed excessive for the conditions. The big rig he was driving in March 2014 on the Coquihalla went into a slide and jackknifed, causing it to hurtle across the median and into a car travelling the other way.

Rescue crews pulled Gayle Ashforth dead from the wreckage. Her

husband of 60 years, Blake, received debilitating injuries.

Crown lawyer Adrienne Murphy said the couple were active and healthy. Blake now requires nursing care.

Murphy said McLeod was driving northbound on an empty load to pick up hog fuel from the Nicola Valley. The road was icy but most motorists, including McLeod, failed to notice.

He was driving 105km/h — the maximum under a speed governor installed by owner Ledcor.

“The two key facts are the road was icy and the Ledcor truck was empty,” Murphy said.

McLeod said he’s driven the Coquihalla daily for three years.

McLeod gave a tearful apology in court to the Ashforth family.

“I know my words will do little to ease the pain and suffering,” he said.

The father of three was off work for three months afterword and required counselling.

Provincial court judge Len Marchand agreed with a joint submission by Crown and defence asking for a fine in the range of $1,500 to $2,000, opting for the latter.

He called McLeod a “responsible, experienced professional driver who misjudged conditions.”

“I hope the family can find it in their hearts to accept the apology as part of their healing process,” he said.

Diabetes walk Sunday The Telus Walk to Cure Diabetes is aiming to raise $130,000 locally for type 1 diabetes research.

The walk, which will take place at the B.C. Wildlife Park on Sunday, is the 21st edition of the event.

Hosted by Telus and JDRF, the event has a fundraising goal of $7.4 million across the nation.

About 45,000 people across 70 cities will walk alongside the type 1

diabetes community.

Registration for the one-kilometre walk in Kamloops begins at 8 a.m. at the Wildlife Park, with the opening ceremonies beginning at 10 a.m. Closing ceremonies will bring the event to an end at 11:45 a.m.

Drivers coming from the south shore once again have easy access to the south end of Tranquille Road.

After about four weeks of rehabilitation work the Fortune Drive overpass opened to traffic on Thursday morning.

The city pledged to keep the overpass closed for no more than a month, but ran into a slight setback at the end of the work as several days of continuous heavy rain prevented its contractor from pouring concrete.

The work is part of the ongoing $10-million Overlander Bridge rehabilitation. Workers stripped away asphalt from the overpass, repaired the concrete underneath and repaved the structure, and are carrying out a similar process on the western lanes of the bridge deck.

Work on those lanes is expected to continue until early July, when the contractor will switch its focus to the eastern traffic lanes.

Repairs of the sidewalk on the west side of the

bridge are also expected to wrap up around that time.

Church bells toll for missing and murdered women St. Paul’s Cathedral rings bell 1,181 times in calling for a royal commission investigation ADAM WILLIAMS

ith each pull of the bell rope at St. Paul’s Cathedral, Mary Garmin remembered her sister, Rosemarie Roper.

“I think she’s probably smiling up there somewhere, my sister,” Garmin said through tears.

Roper was killed in 1967, found dead in a dump after leaving home to attend a school dance.

It was for women like Roper that the bells atop St. Paul’s Cathedral rang 1,181 times on Wednesday afternoon.

They joined the bells of Anglican churches across the country, as witness to the need for a royal commission to investigate the deaths and disappearances of as many aboriginal women across Canada since 1980.

The event was a part of the Anglican Church’s 22 days of prayer and renewal, an initiative marking the end of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, which

addressed the troubled legacy of Indian Residential Schools in Canada.

It was also another step in an attempt to reconcile on behalf of the church, which worked with the federal government for almost a century in residential schools.

According to bishop Barbara Andrews, the event had two goals.

“One, that we let the public know an important story and our role to be a part of finding out about the history of our First Nations people and the need for us to stand with them,” she said.

Mary Garmin is a residential school survivor.

She was the first to ring the church bell on Wednesday at St. Paul’s Anglican church.

The ceremony will take place again on Wednesday at 2 p.m.

CBSA ‘judge, jury and executioner’ for sad robber TIM PETRUK STAFF REPORTER tim@kamloopsthisweek.com

Feroz Buksh has lived in Canada for nearly 35 years, having moved from his native Fiji at 11. He has three Canadian children and has been a contributing member of society.

He had no criminal record until last September when, through tears, he held up a North Kamloops convenience store because he was hungry for chicken in the depths of a drug binge.

The 45-year-old’s future is now in the hands of a lone Canadian Border Services Agency officer tasked with deciding whether Buksh should stay here or be shipped back to Fiji.

On Sept. 19, Buksh tried to pay for food and cigarettes at Tranquille Market with a pre-paid Visa. When it was declined, he said he had a gun and demanded cash. He began to cry, telling the clerk he was in the midst of a divorce and planned to use the money to pay overdue bills.

Buksh put the stolen items in his bag, but it broke as he left the store, its contents spilling out. He was arrested a short time later, found hiding in a friend’s closet.

Buksh pleaded guilty, apologized in court and was handed an 18-month jail sentence.

In jail, Buksh has taken part in rehabilitation and job training, and he is looking forward to rejoining the work force if and when he is released back onto Canadian soil, according to submissions made by his lawyer.

Buksh’s uncertainty is due to a relatively recent change to Canada’s immigration laws.

The law states any permanent resident sentenced to a jail term longer than six months is not entitled to appeal rights before the Immigration Appeal Division.

Previously, a foreign national would had to have been sentenced to a federal prison term — two or more years — to lose that right.

Because of the changes to the law, Buksh’s only hope to stay in Canada is to convince a CBSA officer not to recommend deportation.

“Previously, the Immigration Appeal Division [IAD] would have a hearing and determine whether to remove an individual from Canada or allow a second chance considering all the circumstances, including the best interests of any children, the length of residence, the extent of criminal history, et cetera,” said Aris Daghighian, Buksh’s immigration lawyer.

“The IAD could also issue a conditional stay of removal, which would put the person on conditions, much

like probation, for a number of years that, if complied with, would allow them reprieve from deportation.”

So, Daghighian has been busy filing submissions to the CBSA officer, trying to convince him to allow Buksh to stay in Canada on humanitarian and compassionate grounds.

“Instead of a hearing, this simply allows Mr. Buksh and counsel to send the officer a long set of submissions asking that he please not remove Mr. Buksh,” Daghighian said.

“It is a paper-based process with no hearing or opportunity to hear from witnesses, like his wife and children.”

Daghighian said the system is far from perfect, noting the CBSA officer does not have any probation-like options on the table.

“Most importantly, a CBSA officer is not a neutral arbiter like the Immigration Board, insofar as an officer’s primary responsibility is ensuring the enforcement of immigration laws,” he said, using the analogy of trying to convince a police officer not to arrest someone because he’s otherwise a good person.

“It’s not likely an RCMP officer would have much sympathy or agree not to enforce his duties. That’s why the ultimate decision on criminal conviction and sentencing is left to the courts.

“As the saying goes, the CBSA is now judge, jury and executioner, which is never a just situation.”

Daghighian said Buksh, given the fact he’s a first-time, non-violent offender, is getting the short end of the stick.

“Mr. Buksh’s case is a prime example of why the system has been altered for the worse,” he said.

“The argument is not that all criminals should be given a second chance before removal. Rather, simply, that they should be afforded a fair hearing where the board takes all of the circumstances into consideration before deporting them.”

The submissions Daghighian submitted on Buksh’s behalf describe him as “among the most sympathetic clients our office has ever come across.”

The documents include details of Buksh’s background, his family life, case law and references to United Nations declarations, as well as letters from family and friends describing Buksh’s character.

Daghighian said he’s not sure what will happen to Buksh.

“We’ll wait and see what the CBSA officer’s decision will be in this case,” he said.

“We have hope, but we’re not overly optimistic.”

WILFUL DAMAGE AT SUN PEAKES Sometime during the night of Saturday June 6th, someone threw a large rock into the front window of the Sundance Liquor Store at Sun Peakes. The inside pane of glass was smashed out but the outside pane was still intact, the interesting part was there was no other attempt to gain access to the building. This is a case of senseless vandalism, the owner has no idea why his business was targeted as he is very involved with the community. At this point this is the only business that was damaged, there has been other cases in the past but they were taken care of.

Sun Peakes is a great place to live, work and is a tourist destination, the residents of Sun Peakes and tourist do not need this type of crime in the area.

PROWLER SEEN AT RESIDENCE Early on Saturday morning the owner of a home on Graymede Dr. in the Aberdeen area was woken up by the neighbour’s dogs barking.

The owner went to investigate and saw a male standing on his patio looking through a screen door, the home owner yelled at the suspect and male fled out the back gate.

Unfortunately the home owner did not get a good look at the male,

except to say he was Caucasian and about 6 feet tall wearing dark clothing. The intentions of this suspect was unknown if he was going to break into the house or just look around, one way or the other he was committing a criminal offence.

windows can be left open for the cool night air but these suspects are looking for an opportunity take your property.

ATVS STOLEN FROM A COMPOUND On Thursday June 4th at approximately 1:15 pm, a lone male suspected entered the Super Save Gas on Summit Dr., the male produced a utility knife and demanded cash. A small amount of cash was handed over and the male fled the store. The suspect is described as a tall thin, Caucasian

male, mid 30’s, wearing a hooded poncho and blue Nike call cap with white Nike swoosh on the front and back. There is some indication the male, changed his clothes after the robbery and was seen in white shorts and a white T shirt. The police service dog was call to the scene but was unable to

complete the track of the suspect due to the number of people in the immediate area. This is a very busy area and someone may have seen this suspect fleeing from the store or even changing his clothes.

THE HOT AND NOT OF THE WEEK Kamloops This Week looks at the stories of the week — the good, the bad and all in-between:

HOT: The Fortune Drive Overpass.

Businesses on the southernmost end of the Tranquille Market are likely breathing a sigh of relief. After a closure of more than four weeks, drivers can once again use the Fortune Drive overpass to access the area easily from the Overlanders Bridge.

That’s good news for restaurants in the area in particular, which North Shore Business Improvement Association general manager Steven Puhallo told KTW have seen sales decline by 50 per cent or more as the closure chased away lunch and breakfast crowds.

NOT: Racism.

Kamloops has blazed some trails when it comes to race — we were home to both the first mayor of Chinese descent in North America and the province’s first black alderman — but this last week wasn’t the Tournament Capital’s proudest.

On Sunday, an anonymous tagger spray painted a racial slur on an Aberdeen retaining wall near the home of a young black family. And, on Facebook, a debate’s been waging as to whether a Kamloops man’s use of the term “Timmigrants” to describe employees at the North Shore Tim Hortons is funny or insensitive — with many responders chuckling over the term and a few suggesting they’ll adopt it themselves.

For future reference, here’s an easy way to tell whether your clever wordplay is all in good fun, or hurtful: check to see how those it refers to react.

In the case of the Tim Hortons employees, Ilenna Kovacs, the woman who kicked off the social media conversations, should make the answer pretty clear.

“Their faces dropped,” she told CBC Kamloops yesterday morning.

Perfect penning of the past

H

e penned what many consider the greatest headline ever written and, this week, Vincent Musetto was honoured as the esteemed New York Times published a tribute following his death at the age of 74.

Musetto was an editor at the New York Post — the Oscar to Felix in the journalism world — in 1983 when he created the headline to serve as a kicker to all headlines: Headless Body In Topless Bar. As Times reporter Margalit Fox described in her well-written ode to Musetto: “The crime behind the headline was lurid even by tabloid standards. On April 13, 1983, Charles Dingle, drinking in a tavern in the Jamaica section of Queens, argued with the owner, Herbert Cummings, and shot him to death. He then took several women hostage, raping one and forcing another, in an apparent bid to confound the police, to cut off Mr. Cummings’s head.

Apprehended the next day, Mr. Dingle was convicted and sentenced to 25 years to life.

Denied parole several times, he died in the Wende Correctional Facility near Buffalo in 2012.”

As Fox noted, the headline outlived the actual crime in the memory of newspaper readers.

When he wrote that headline, Musetto was an anonymous desker, a guy in the

MUSINGS newsroom who toiled anonymously in the shadows of the star reporters, a guy who wrote headlines and did some editing.

Today, in newspapers large and small, there is not the financial luxury to employ newsroom staffers to focus on such specialties.

Today, with the Internet siphoning advertising revenue and many newspapers fighting hard to remain alive, a guy like Musetto would need to be writing headlines, penning stories, proofing pages, banging out briefs, typesetting letters, rushing out to take a photo, laying out pages, uploading stories to the website, updating the newspaper’s Facebook page, shooting and uploading video to the website, sending out tweets on a timely basis, answering calls in the newsroom, responding to emails from readers, greeting visitors at the front desk — and maybe delivering papers on the way to work and selling an ad or two

on the way home.

The reality is the newspaper business that Musetto knew in 1983 would be unrecognizable to him today in any paper, be it Kamloops This Week, the Globe and Mail or his scrappy old New York Post.

This is why it is a delight to sit back and take in a beauty of a landmark headline like Headless Body In Topless Bar — and to read the background in the New York Times’ tribute.

It evokes a time when information had a slower, more methodical flow, when the newspaper, the top-of-thehour radio newscast and the six o’clock TV news were the Holy Trinity of current events — when getting the story right was always more important than simply getting it first.

It demanded patience and it delivered depth.

It existed in an era that afforded enough time and care to practise a craft as particular and precise as writing headlines.

I’d like to think Musetto is looking down (or up, considering he was at the New York Post) and creating everlasting headlines from the carnage that comprises this crazy world.

ACTION AGAINST CLIMATE CHANGE STARTS HERE Editor: Twenty years ago I couldn’t possibly count the honeybees in our garden.

Anyone can see that is no longer the case.

Alarming research definitely points at the misuse and overuse of pesticides as the main culprits and shows pollinator decline is being driven by a combination of parasite infestation, the lack of wild flowers and pesticides.

If pesticides do not out and out kill the pollinators, they cause other problems concerning foraging and navigation behaviours, inability to store nectar, interference with winterization abilities, etc.

I must breath a heavy sigh when I see people writing about the apocalypse that will happen if the city bans pesticides.

This notion that the town will be taken over by weeds is absurd at best.

People only need to look at Ontario to see how a pesticide ban won’t lead to the end of the world for our lawns.

Ontario has the strictest laws in Canada regarding pesticides and the province has not been taken over by weeds since it was brought in in 2009.

Letter writers have said sports would be unplayable in Kamloops should there be dandelions on our fields.

I wonder how many athletes in Toronto will be swallowed up in the weeds during the Pan-Am games?

Many other municipalities are considering pesticide bans and a recent poll by the Canadian Cancer Society found a clear majority of B.C. residents support a province-wide ban.

The city will survive if it enacts this bylaw and it can look to other municipalities to see how to properly bring in this change.

Hopefully council will not give in to the doomsday fear mongering brought on by the opponents.

OVERLANDERS BRIDGE PROJECT POORLY MANAGED Editor: The Overlanders traffic pattern management scheme, traffic stanchions grid layout and traffic guidance by on-site traffic controllers are the weakest and poorest I have witnessed in years during a bridge construction project.

The “courtesy” of alternating traffic from two lanes to one from Fortune Drive North and Tranquille Road are expected to meld right at the bridge

entrance instead of two blocks before.

Inside-lane drivers cut in well in front of left lane patient drivers.

Worse, traffic from Summit Road West is backed for one to two miles during rush hour and is forced to “speed merge” into traffic from Lansdowne Street, which has right of way.

Clearly this intersection requires alternating courtesy merging.

An attempt at courtesy merging is provided by a posted sign “Turn Right on Red Light” to the general confusion of drivers attempting to create courtesy merging only to be honked at from speeding Landsdowne drivers believing they have right of way.

No traffic controller monitors provide guidance at this critical intersection.

The resulting traffic backing up on Summit Road almost to

Thompson Rivers University.

Lastly, what appears to be poorly-trained traffic controllers on site, simply stand still with “Slow” signage providing no management of “courtesy merging” traffic control patterning which should be put into effect immediately at the two key traffic confluences.

Motel robber sought The knock at the door wasn’t housekeeping.

Kamloops RCMP are investigating a robbery that took place at the Best Western hotel on Columbia Street West yesterday morning.

Mounties received a call reporting a robbery in progress at about 7 a.m. on Thursday. When the victim answered the knock at his hotel room door, he was reportedly met by two females and a male, armed with a baseball bat.

The victim was not injured during the incident. The investigation is ongoing.

Racist graffiti spray-painted on a retaining wall in Aberdeen may lead to charges of public incitement of hatred.

“I can confirm that we are investigating,” RCMP Cpl. Cheryl Bush told KTW. “The investigation will consist of attempts to locate who is responsible.

“There is the possibility that a person could face charges of public incitement of hatred, Sec. 319 of the Criminal Code, if the elements of the offence are proven.

“If it does not meet those elements of offence, it would fall under mischief.

“It is still under investigation.”

The graffiti — the word “nigger” was spray-painted in bold blue lettering on a block retaining wall in a townhouse development on Aberdeen Drive — was reported

Bill White lives in downtown Kamloops and learned of the racist tag while reading Tuesday’s edition of KTW. It incensed him to the point he has offered $250 to start a reward fund to catch those responsible for spray-painting the offensive word.

“It completely upset me,” White said. “I’m amazed that someone with that kind of attitude knows how to spell words.”

Parishioners joined with others impacted by Canadian residential schools in the event.

“I’m just so happy to see everybody come out to acknowledge it and take ownership of it, that these things have happened and that they’re willing to change,” said Shirley Henderson.

Henderson, of Dawson City, Yukon, had aunts and uncles enrolled in the residential school system.

And, while he didn’t have any direct connection to the school system, parishioner Duncan MacRae rung the St. Paul’s bell about 40 times when he spoke to KTW. “I recall, as a youth on the prairies, the role of the aborigi-

nal schools was still very much a part of our every day life there,” said MacRae, who grew up in Regina.

“Nobody thought too much about it, but then, we didn’t understand what the schools were about at the time.”

Every April 6 — the day Rosemarie was killed — Mary remembers her sister.

Sometimes, she goes to the Thompson River and says a prayer for her. She includes a prayer for all the other missing and murdered women out there.

“I don’t think I’d change anything because I think, the way the world’s going, I think my sister’s in a better place,” Garmin said.

“It’s like April 6 all over again.

“It’s an emotional day.”

hey feed off the cheers and jeers from the crowd, family members and friends exhilarated, incensed by the fury below, played out before them on burnt-orange floor.

Remarks hurled from the bleachers, not always onside.

Goals, assists and saves are later boasted about over drinks across the street at Frick and Frack — statistics sure to be forgotten when they’re dead and gone, but meaningful to them, at least for a night.

What an occasion it was five years ago, the championship victory, one glorious season among seven others that ended in defeat.

Those blistering-hot nights at Memorial Arena, they denote summer in their minds.

And, those road trips. Say no more.

For the longest-tenured Kamloops Rattlers, the brotherhood of senior lacrosse is part of their lives — one they’re in danger of losing.

“We’re a ways away from folding but, if it keeps going on this downward spiral, who knows,” said Rattlers’ president and captain Mark Jurista, who founded the team in 2008.

“For the last eight years and even before that, we’ve always had lacrosse and we make it a part of our life.

“Most of us are getting up there in age and we hope that we can get another 10 years out of it.”

If the Rattlers can’t find more players, they might fold and, if they do, so will the league, given there are only three teams — Kamloops, the Kelowna Raiders and Armstrong Shamrocks — in the Thompson Okanagan Senior Lacrosse League (TOSLL).

Numbers problems have become a common theme in Kamloops lacrosse over the last few years, with a lack of players nearly forcing the junior B Kamloops Venom to go extinct and the junior B Rattlers having already gone the way of the dodo.

It makes sense that a dearth of graduating juniors would lead to a depleted senior team, but Jurista said that is not the only reason for his squad’s dilemma.

“Even when there was two teams, one year there were 12 graduating players between the two teams and only one player played senior,” said Jurista, a 31-year-old NorKam secondary graduate.

“Something is going on. There is a broken relationship with us and the juniors.”

Jurista is well aware many graduating juniors leave town to continue their lacrosse careers, attend school and work, but he believes there is a contingent of players sitting out for other reasons.

“I know a lot of guys are burnt out or they haven’t played for a while and are discouraged about getting back into it,” Jurista said.

“If they came out to practices and games, it’s not like junior. It’s more casual and it’s more relaxed, in terms of commitment. We need more of those bodies out.”

The TOSLL has a reputation for being a Wild West, rough-and-tumble league, which might also be keeping younger players away.

“There was a bit of an ugly take on the league because it was a lot of bigger guys and there was a lot of fighting, but it has cleaned up a lot and there is more of that mutual respect among teams and players,” said Jurista, whose wife, Cassy, recently gave birth to their daughter, Ainsley.

“Everybody’s got to go to work the next

day. Everyone has families to support.”

On Friday, the Rattlers brought only 10 runners to Kelowna and were throttled 19-7 by the Raiders, who had 18 runners.

Jurista was forced to forfeit a game for the first time in seven years last season when the Rattlers couldn’t muster enough runners to take on the Raiders.

“If we have to do that again, I don’t know if it’s worth it to have a team,” the captain said. “It’s just not enough bodies.

“We need some younger guys, maybe some of the guys who aren’t into it anymore, to come out for half or three-quarters of the games, or make every other practice and game.”

The Rattlers are also willing to welcome those new to the sport, rookies such as Kevin Ross, who caught on with the team this season.

Kamloops, which won its only league title in 2010, has been without a coach for four years, when John Aldred vacated the position after a four-year run.

Current junior players wishing to toil with the Rattlers are also welcome. Call-ups were pivotal to the Rattlers’ only championship victory five years ago.

There is still time to hop on board this season, with the 1-5 Rattlers aiming to rebound in their four remaining regularseason tilts before the playoffs.

Kamloops is in action tonight against hometown Armstrong, with its next home game scheduled for June 19 at Memorial.

Game time is 8 p.m.

For longtime Rattlers such as Jurista, A.J. Lockwood, Nathan Akins, Lee Black, Mike Smith, Nathan and JJ Woldum, along with the brothers McIntosh, Russ, Gavin and Curtis, losing the team would be a painful body blow.

Many of them played junior together, went their separate ways, then returned to form the men’s team, one they’re trying to keep off life support.

“We think it’s a great game and we all love to play it,” Jurista said.

“We don’t want to be forced to retire early.”

Local club win June Classic Invitational swim meet

KAMLOOPS SWIMS TO 30 GOLD MEDALS, 36 SILVER MEDALS AND 24 BRONZE MEDALS The Kamloops Classics Swimming club won the 2015 June Classic Invitational Swim Meet at the Canada Games Aquatic Centre, pulling in 90 medals at the 23rd annual event.

The Classics won 30 gold medals, 36 silver medals and 24 bronze medals.

A total of 25 teams and 440 swimmers competed in the event, representing British Columbia, Alberta, Yukon and Northwest Territories.

Lauren Prokopetz set three new club records at the meet, capturing gold in the 100-metre and 200m breaststrokes and silver in the 50m breaststroke.

She qualified for the 2015 Canadian Age Group Swimming Championships in Quebec City this summer based on her performance at the June Classic.

Sarah Koopmans, Kiana Smart and Ashley Bagabuyo also set club records at the meet.

Koopmans qualified for the 15-and-under Western Canadian Championships next year as well, touching the wall in the 50m

butterfly in 30.40 seconds.

Competing in 15-and-over girls, Eloise Ladyman captured gold in the 50m, 100m and 200m backstrokes at the meet.

Michael Dagasso, who competed in 12-and-under boys, won gold in the 50m, 100m and 200m breaststrokes, and silver in the 50m, 100m and 200m freestyle events.

Ryley McRae also won three gold medals, touching the wall first in the 50m and 100m butterfly and the 100m freestyle, and silver medals in the 50m freestyle and 200m butterfly.

Josh Ogilvie won a bronze medal in the 15-and-over boys, while qualifying for the AAA Provincial Swimming Championships in Victoria later this year.

Schedules released for WolfPack soccer ADAM WILLIAMS

The schedule for the 2015 Canada West soccer season is out and, on the women’s side of the ball, it’s slightly different than Thompson Rivers University expected.

The WolfPack women will get the season underway a week earlier than most of the competition, and a week earlier than expected, in Winnipeg to face the Manitoba Bisons and the Winnipeg Wesmen on Sept. 4 and Sept. 5.

The following weekend, the first full

weekend of action in the Canada West, TRU will again be on the road, facing off against divisional rivals in the Alberta Pandas of Edmonton and the UNBC Timberwolves of Prince George.

The WolfPack’s home-opener will be played on Sept. 26, four weeks into the season, against the Victoria Vikes.

The six-game road trip to start the season will be the Pack’s longest, while a fivegame homestand will close out the season as TRU’s longest stretch of games in the Tournament Capital.

The women will be

off with a bye weekend the week of Oct. 2.

The regular season is set to wrap up on Oct. 25, with TRU closing out its schedule against UNBC. On Oct. 31, the regional playoffs — featuring the top six teams in both the Pacific and Prairie regions — will get underway. The highest seed advancing from the regional playoffs to the Canada West’s Select Six, the association’s championship, will receive a bye directly to the semifinal of the tournament, while the remaining teams will

play in a quarter-final matchup.

The Select Six tournamnet will open on Nov. 5, and will be hosted by the highest seeded Prairie team remaining in play.

The Canadian Interuniversity Sport National Championship will begin on Nov. 12, hosted by the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds.

On the men’s side, TRU will get its season underway on the

weekend of Sept. 12, at home to the Trinity Western University Spartans and the University of the Fraser Valley Cascades.

The club’s only bye week will come on the weekend of Sept. 18.

The WolfPack men will be on the road for a season-long five games from Sept. 25 to Oct. 9 and will be at home for five consecutive games from Oct. 10 until the season wraps up on Oct. 25.

TRU will play host to last year’s Canada West bronze medal-winning UBC Thunderbirds on Oct. 17.

The men’s soccer playoffs will begin on Oct. 31, with teams from the Prairie and Pacific Conferences crossing over in the first round of play.

The Canada West Final Four will be hosted by the highest remaining Pacific Conference team on Nov. 7 and Nov. 8.

The CIS National Championship will be played at York University from Nov. 12 to Nov. 15.

The men’s and women’s teams will both be on the road to face the UBC-Okanagan Heat on Oct. 9. It will be the only time this season the teams are on the road together.

Both teams will be at Hillside Stadium for games on Oct. 10, Oct. 17 and Oct. 18, as well as Oct. 24 and Oct. 25.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Police escorts guided American Pharoah and his entourage back home to Churchill Downs on Sunday, hours after his stunningly smooth run into Triple Crown history.

Now, his victory lap begins.

At the headquarters of American horse racing, Churchill Downs’ famous twin spires are displaying Zayat Stables’ turquoise and gold colours all week to celebrate the first Triple Crown in 37 years.

The Kentucky Derby museum quickly updated a display to reflect the historic achievement, and American Pharoah’s name was added in gold letters in the paddock with 11 previous champions.

The horse left Belmont and flew back home to a crowd that cheered as he walked toward trainer Bob Baffert’s Barn 33. He seemed to drink the attention in as he strolled out of the van and walked around the barn before media and an adoring gathering of camera-clicking fans. His return was shown over the jumbo screen overlooking the storied track.

Tomorrow American Pharoah will take his public parade lap at the track before the Stephen Foster Handicap.

Churchill Downs spokesman John Asher believes that American Pharoah’s achievement will have set in with the public and he hopes they will help the horse celebrate.

“I think (people) are excited now. People get enchanted by a special horse, and there’s no question this horse is special.’’

Assistant trainer Jimmy Barnes said the plane ride back was pretty calm for the horse. American Pharoah will be walked for the next few days, per his normal post-race training schedule.

“It was a pretty easy flight,’’ Barnes added.

Baffert’s barn was recently updated with a plaque reflecting his prized colt’s Kentucky Derby win here last month that sparked expectations of ending a generations-long Triple Crown drought.

American Pharoah delivered victories of seven and five-and-a-half lengths in the Preakness and Belmont, respectively, igniting a huge sense of relief after decades of disappointment.

After so many years of waiting, plans are still coming together for how Kentucky might ultimately celebrate its new racing king.

TAMPA, Fla. — When Jonathan Quick was a brick wall for the Los Angeles Kings in 2012, the Conn Smythe Trophy was undoubtedly his. The same went for the Boston Bruins’ Tim Thomas in 2011.

“Thomas was outstanding,’’ said Rick Bowness, an assistant coach for the 2011 Vancouver Canucks. “It was an automatic.’’

Now Bowness is an associate coach with the Tampa Bay Lightning and there’s no automatic Conn Smythe winner in this Stanley Cup final against the Chicago Blackhawks.

Goaltenders aren’t among the frontrunners, and each team’s top scorers have been held down in the series.

Victor Hedman and Duncan Keith have been the most dominant players, and this will likely be the first year a defenceman wins the Conn Smythe since Scott Niedermayer in 2007.

Only four have won it in the past 20 seasons.

“A lot of it has to do if you’re scoring

goals or if you’re contributing offensively or you’re a goaltender and you’re preventing goals, I think people see you in a different way,’’ 2002 Conn Smythe winner Nicklas Lidstrom said in a phone interview from Sweden. “When you’re defending, you might end up preventing a goal by making a good defensive play.

“But goal-scorers or setting up goals, I think you get more recognition than what defence does.’’

Like Hedman and Keith, Niedermayer, Lidstrom, Scott Stevens and Brian Leetch had to be disproportionate difference-makers to win it. Drew Doughty of the Los Angeles Kings probably had the best case since Niedermayer a year ago, but “Mr. Game 7’’ Justin Williams got the Conn Smythe.

With the Cup final tied at two going into Game 5 tomorrow night, Jonathan Toews is still a strong candidate if the Blackhawks win and Tyler Johnson if the Lightning win.

But, Keith and Hedman have been so good it would almost be an upset if neither won.

 Obituaries & In Memoriam  MARIA MARITA (RIA) KERSSENS August 28, 1938 - May 26, 2015 Maria Marita (Ria) Kerssens died peacefully on May 26th, 2015 in West Kelowna at age 76 with her family by her side. Ria was predeceased by her devoted husband Jack, her parents, two brothers, and three sisters. She is survived

by Tina (Harry), Elsie (Bernie), John (Robyn), Margaret (Pete), eleven grandchildren, two brothers and five sisters.

Born in Holland on August 28th, 1938, Ria emigrated to Canada with her family, settling in Salmon Arm where she met her true love, Jack. They were married for 59 years. She was a woman of strong faith, being a devout Catholic and an active member of the Sacred Heart Cathedral for 47 years. Ria was a loving, generous, hardworking woman who put her heart into everything.

Her greatest accomplishments being her family and home. She was a homemaker for many years, a talented seamstress, and an incredible knitter who especially loved knitting for her cherished grandchildren. She was a loyal and dedicated employee at Sears for 27 years.

Ria became a resident of The Village of Smith Creek in West Kelowna in March of 2014. Her family extends their deepest gratitude to the staff and volunteers for her excellent care.

She touched the hearts of many and was well loved in return. We thank Tina Horsthuis, her sister, for her unwavering love and support.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Sacred Heart Cathedral in Kamloops on June 20th, 2015 at 2:00 pm. Prayers will be held June 19th, 2015 at 7:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Alzheimer’s Society of BC, located 543 Battle St, Kamloops, BC, V2C 2M1.

John was born March 15, 1920 at the family farm near Galahad, Alberta and passed away peacefully at his Kamloops home on June 6, 2015.

John and his wife Mary moved from Alberta to North Kamloops in 1945 where they lived until 1952 when they moved to an acreage in Brocklehurst.

Their children were born in Kamloops and spent the majority of their lives in the Brocklehurst home.

John started work on the farm at Tranquille, moved to the Powerhouse, went back to school, worked his way up and retired as Chief Stationary Engineer at the Powerhouse.

He was coach for the boy’s softball team, a Cub Scout leader and was on the committee that brought Norbrock Stadium to McArthur Island Park. He was also an active member of both Oddfellows Tatnai Lodge #9 and Oddfellows Excelsior Rebekah Lodge #23. He dearly loved golfing as well as curling and bowling.

John was predeceased by his wife Mary in 2005 and was the last survivor of six children.

He is survived by his children, Edna Fliegar, Howie (Judy) Peterson, Joanne (Walter) Worsfold as well as former sons-in-law Robert Fliegar and Spencer Colman (Mary-Ellen), grandchildren Aaron (Tanya) Fliegar, Diana (Chuck) Cattermole, Jennifer (James) Auclair, Bradley Peterson, Kirk Colman and Kimberly (Kyle Colman), great-grandchildren Tyler and Andrea Fliegar, Frankie and Jaxon Bruno, Seth and Aaron Cattermole, Devyn and Ivy Auclair and Colton Worsfold. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews as well as close and long time family and friends.

A huge thank you to Interior Health for all their help and support including the nurses and the respite girls which allowed us to keep Dad at home. Thank you so much!

Beautiful Sayings in Kamloops churches

E

very Sunday, sermons ring out from the pulpits of Kamloops churches.

Pastors, ministers and priests explain the scriptures and make it real and applicable to modern life.

But, the most famous sermon of all was the Sermon on the Mount, delivered by Jesus of Nazareth.

Scholars have declared it to be the essence of Christian theology, a set of ethics that has guided the great thinkers and leaders of the Christian faith for centuries.

The sermon’s opening statements are called the Beatitudes.

The word comes from the Latin word for happiness, but because of their power and wisdom, they could be called the Beautiful Sayings.

Beatitudes and we’ll look at four: 1. Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Many of the Beatitudes are counterintuitive, in that they run counter to conventional wisdom.

The first is a typical example. How is it that the poor in spirit qualify for the richest reward — heaven?

What Jesus is saying is those who are painfully aware of their sinful nature and unworthiness are the most

likely to see the gift of heaven.

It is their innate sense of humility and, correspondingly, their gratitude to God for their salvation, that grants them a place in heaven.

By contrast, Jesus spoke harshly about self-righteous hypocrites who are going to be surprised when they are denied admission to heaven.

2. Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.

Keep in mind Jesus’ audience consisted primarily of the poor, who were well-acquainted with suffering, loss and premature death in their families.

We all long to be comforted in times of despair and grief.

Here is a promise from the King of kings that comfort in times of mourning is assured.

Part of that assurance is the gift of eternal life and the

prospect of seeing one’s loved ones again in paradise.

For many, one of the great gifts of religious faith is the comfort they receive in times of great grief.

3. Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.

I once saw a bumper sticker that said, “The meek will inherit the earth (if you don’t mind).”

This is a counterintuitive statement but, once you peel back layers of meaning, it makes sense.

The original Greek word is prautes and one of its secular uses was to describe a welltrained horse — in other words, “broken” yet still powerful and useful as it responds obediently to its master’s commands (think of the Lippizaner stallions).

That is how a Christian must be: Meek (humbly obedi-

ent) to the Lord’s directions, yet courageous, forthright and useful in delivering the message of God. But, what about the “inherit the earth” part?

This can be seen in three ways. The book of Revelation recounts the ultimate destruction of Satan and all evildoers. Those who remain (the meek) will inhabit a “New Jerusalem”. He who overcomes will inherit all this, and I will be his God and he will be my son.

The second possible meaning comes from research done by William Strawbridge and his colleagues (American Journal of Public Health, 87(6), June 1997: 957-61) which compared frequent attendance at religious services and mortality in a welldesigned longitudinal study over 28 years with 5,286 people

in Alameda County, California.

The results showed those who were actively engaged in religious practice were 36 per cent less likely to die during the study period than those who were infrequent or non-attenders of religious services.

In other words, the “meek” are inheriting the earth because they are living longer.

The third reason the meek will inherit the earth is that religiously observant people have more children than secular people.

Vancouver Sun religion writer Douglas Todd recently noted that mostly Catholic Latinos have an average of 2.75 children, while non-religious whites average 1.66 children.

4. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. Theologian Karl

Rohmer once said, “A mystic is someone whose life is ruled by thirst.”

Despite the concerted scorn of atheists and pervasive apathy of “don’t care-ists”, there are still many people who are desperately thirsty for transcendent meaning in their lives.

This is a realm only religious belief can fill, and to our collective dismay, a large number of disaffected young men are slaking their thirst in radical Islam.

The sad irony is that instead of righteousness, they seem to be thirsting for murder, rape and mayhem.

It is people like Mother Teresa and Albert Schweitzer, however, whose thirst for righteousness led them on a path of selfless service in honour to God. God guarantees that those who seek him, will find him.

Whether it is because they are more economical, more convenient or just fun to ride, people are trading in four wheels for two and hitting the road on a motorcycle.

Between 2001 and 2009, the number of motorcycle riders on B.C. streets and highways nearly doubled from 49,000 to about 94,000.

With such an increase in riders comes and increase in the number of motorcycle-related injuries and fatalities.

Fifty-eight percent of all crashes involving motorcycles are the fault of the motorcyclist.

Inexperience is the primary factor in most crashes. New motorcyclists in the 16- to 25-age group are the most at-risk, with a fatality rate 13 times higher than older riders.

Allan Lamb, executive director of the BCAA Traffic Safety Foundation is pleased to see the provincial government moving toward stricter safety laws similar to European models, where new riders are restricted to less powerful motorcycles while learning. Lamb is pleased with the incoming helmet law requiring all drivers and passengers to wear a helmet that meets certified safetyindustry standards.

There are more middle-aged riders taking to the roads, too. Often referred to as “rubies” (rich urban bikers), these riders may have never ridden a motorcycle before, ride infrequently or it has been a long time since they were on a bike.

Lamb suggests middle-age riders take an annual refresher course

every spring and consider looking into appropriate insurance for their motorcycle usage.

The BCAA Traffic Safety Foundation offers tips for staying safe on a motorcycle: • Make eye contact — make sure the other driver or rider sees you.

• Pay attention — pay attention to the signals of other drivers and make your intention clear.

• Watch for left turning vehicles at intersections.

• Be aware of hazardous road conditions — wet roads, sand, gravel, potholes and other hazards may cause a motorcycle to fall.

• Pay attention to posted speeds and watch the road ahead — reduce speed on curves and watch for oncoming vehicles. Many crashes happen when a rider overshoots the road or crosses the centre line.

• Wear protective clothing — wear clothing designed for riders that is “armoured” bright and reflective.

• Wear a helmet — Helmets are mandatory in B.C. and, in crashes, helmets prevent 67 percent of head injuries and prevent 29 percent of deaths. Make sure your helmet meets current safety standards.

• Never drive a car or a motorcycle while impaired — Driving is impaired when the ability to do so is affected by any substance or condition changing the mood or perception of reality of the driver. Alcohol or drugs, illicit or prescription and even fatigue and stress will impair your driving. A combination of any or all of these things can be deadly.

A former cannabis club head baker at the centre of a Supreme Court of Canada ruling is both thrilled and relieved after the high court struck down limits on what constitutes legally acceptable medical marijuana products.

The court ruled unanimously yesterday that medical marijuana can be legally consumed in a range of ways, from cannabis-infused cookies and brownies to cooking oils and teas.

“I think across the country there will be a lot more smiles and a lot less pain,’’ said Owen Smith with the Victoria Cannabis Buyers Club, whose 2009 arrest was the focus of the decision.

Smith was charged after police found hundreds of pot cookies and cannabis-infused

olive and grapeseed oils in his Victoria apartment. He was acquitted at trial and won an appeal.

The outpouring of gratitude since the ruling was handed down has been overwhelming, said Smith.

He received a phone call from a mother who used cannabis-infused oil to treat her daughter’s epilepsy.

“She was just overjoyed and in tears about the decision,’’ he said. “It’s been emotional, that’s for sure.’’

Not only was it a unanimous 7-0 ruling, but the court made a point of attributing the written decision to the entire court — something the justices do when they want to underline a finding.

It was yet another rebuke of the Harper government’s tough-on-crime agenda.

Until now, federal regulations stipulated authorized

users of physician-prescribed cannabis could only consume dried marijuana.

But, limiting medical consumption to dried pot infringes on liberty protections under the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, the court said.

“The prohibition of nondried forms of medical marijuana limits liberty and security of the person in a manner that is arbitrary and hence is not in accord with the principles of fundamental justice,’’ said the written judgement.

The initial trial judge in Smith’s case gave the federal government a year to change the laws around cannabis extracts, but the court said yesterday its ruling takes effect immediately.

Cheryl Rose, whose daughter Hayley takes cannabis for a severe form of epilepsy, said the 22-year-old’s seizures have dropped dramatically.

Under the previous law, Hayley had to take 15 capsules of dried cannabis daily. Now, she will only have to take one concentrated capsule made with oil.

“Without having extracts available for her, I don’t think we’d be able to keep it up. It’s way too much for a person to consume,’’ she said. “She’s finally going to fully have her life back.’’

The decision was the latest in a series of rulings by the high court against the Harper government on a variety of issues, including unanimously rejecting the ban on providing doctor-assisted death to mentally competent patients.

Cuba, in July 2004 — said in a telephone interview he was unaware he was on the U.S. list.

He has flown to other destinations in Europe and beyond, but this was the first time he planned a trans-Atlantic flight.

Benchellali was to attend a conference on peace and another on the phenomenon of radicalization of Western youth who have headed by the thousands to Syria.

Also during her undergrad Lisa earned 1st place in the 2011 TRU Undergraduate Student Research and Innovation Conference for her research on the Economic Effects of Climate Change and in 2009 she was on the TRU Dean’s List.

Lisa joined ECO directly out of law school and is a member of the Kamloops Bar Association, Canadian Bar Association, Women’s Law Forum, Trial Lawyers Association and the Criminal lawyers Association. Lisa was a courtworker with the Elizabeth Fry Society and has volunteered for a number of community events including BC Wildlife Park special events and the Kamloops International Baseball Tournament. Danielle Mathieson Pederson hopes she won’t need Kickstarter for her next book.

While the Kamloops author has seen others use the online crowdfunding platform to repeatedly help pay for things like editing, printing and promoting of their works, it’s intended to be a onetime source of income to get the ball rolling, she told KTW. “The goal is to not have to [use Kickstarter],” she said in a phone interview.

Instead, Mathieson Pederson hopes her first book, Lasera - Book 1: The Mer Archives, will fund her second book, which is expected to be finished next summer, and lead to a sustainable series of youngadult novels.

“Ideally, that’s the way it would go,” she said.

It was a bit of a battle going the Kickstarter route. Her first campaign, which began in October, failed after raising only $1,500. However, Mathieson Pederson started a second campaign which raised $6,125 and funded the project.

“I reached out a little bit more to my network,” she said.

Now, eight months after starting the first campaign — seven years after the characters first popped into her head — Mathieson Pederson is looking forward to launching the book today at the Tournament Capital Centre.

“I’m so excited that all of these people who I have been talking to about this book get a chance to read it now,” she said.

The TCC is a fitting location for the event, being the setting of her young-adult novel.

The fantasy-fiction story follows a 17-yearold girl who is saved from drowning by a merman named Wyn at the Kamloops recreational facility.

The 236-page book will be for sale at the book launch, which takes place 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. at 910 McGill Rd. The event, on the mezzanine at the pool, includes a book read-

ing and a scene from the book acted out in the pool.

“We’ll be doing it while everyone is swimming and enjoying the water,” Mathieson Pederson said.

Admission is free.

I

remember the first music I ever bought.

Some will shake their heads while remembering LPs or eight-tracks but, for me, it was a CD. It was the first Spice Girls album, Spice, and I was an elementary student excited to play Wannabe on my boombox.

Truth be told, I wanted the cassette version of the album — like my friend Emma had at the time — but mom said it would be worth spending extra money on the CD because, after all, you could record it onto tapes.

Fast forward a couple of years and I remember the first time I saw Napster.

Friends from school showed me how to download music before burning my first CD. Mariah Carey’s Always Be My Baby and TLC’s Unpretty were among the first tracks and I labelled it with black marker: “Jessica’s CD” or something like that.

Back home, however, the same process proved difficult on my family’s older computer, being mostly limited to playing games like Chips Challenge or Age of Empires at best.

I spent hours watching the per cent sign of the status bar increase by even the slightest in the peer-to-peer music-sharing program — all just to listen to Vengaboys on my own terms.

It was worth the wait, though.

Not only was the music free, it was more personalized and convenient.

a disc that wasn’t Big Shiny Tunes and come up with your own names for the mixes — I think “Boy Beats”, a CD chock full of boy band music, also somehow eventually made it into my collection.

This was a new wave of music consumption.

While musicians and artists will cringe remembering this time, thinking back to it all, downloading music illegally didn’t feel wrong.

Perhaps it was because it was so easy.

It was secretive, from the privacy of your own computer screen.

It could be justified with a little ignorance because it supposedly impacted some distant rich and famous person.

There was the argument that nobody wants to spend $20 on an album when they only liked one song.

And, most of all, everyone was doing it.

It became socially acceptable to steal art.

I remember a phase in my teenage years when I tried to go back to paying for music — but, while it eased my conscience, Death From Above 1979 and H.I.M. cases only took up space and collected dust.

The cultural shift is likely to blame for

dying music stores and I feel bad for contributing to their demise.

But, today things are looking up for the music industry.

I have been using the online music streaming program Spotify for the better part of a year.

Downloading the free trial on a whim, I learned it is easy to find, store and play music from multiple devices.

It’s better than listening to Spice on a ghetto blaster and better than Jessica’s CD, though I do love belting out Mariah from time to time.

Having recently upgraded my Spotify account to the premium version — a monthly subscription without the ads, which allows you to take the music offline — I am once again paying for music.

And, on Wednesday, the company announced on its blog that more than 20-million subscribers too are paying for the service.

The numbers talk, and Apple revealed earlier this week it is going to try and compete with its new Apple Music.

Two decades later, it has come full circle — technology has caught up with listener demands.

Taylor Swift doesn’t agree, but she needs to Shake It Off because down the road, I’m guessing I’ll remember the first music subscription I ever bought.

Mission begins summer campaign

The New Life Mission is reminding Kamloopsians the marginalized still need help even when the mercury is rising.

Regan Wilson, manager at the mission’s outeach centre at 181 West Victoria St., said the agency has started its summer fundraising campaign, Care for Kamloops, to help continue providing food, support and healthcare services.

Q: What was seeping through the cracks along the highway between Halston and Mt. Paul Way last week?

Several Kamloops residents are wondering what was seeping onto Highway 5 last week.

It has since been fixed, as shown here.

A: The Ministry of Transportation was sealing cracks along Highway 5 on May 31, when the weather took a turn for the worse.

Heavy rain the following day meant they could no longer work.

“The Ministry became aware of the failing product on Wednesday and instructed the contractor to remove and

replace the sealant from the highway at the expense of the contractor,” said Sonia Lowe, in an email statement from the ministry.

Work continues and is expected to be completed in coming weeks.

“Lab testing is currently underway to determine the cause of the failure,” Lowe said.

Healthy food for family camping trips this summer

W

ith summer upon us, the itch to get outdoors becomes difficult to ignore.

Our family likes to make time each summer for a few camping trips and, since we have a toddler, I like to ensure our food is organized.

I plan simple meals and prepare food before we go, trying to use certain foods in multiple meals and snacks, such as cheese, yogurt and bread, to save space in the cooler.

Of course, we also pack less healthy snacks for around the fire, whether it’s making s’mores or passing around a bag of chips.

But, like at home, I think it is important most of our food be nutritious.

Here are some foods often found in our camping cooler:

Celebrate Donkey Days on June 20 Last year’s Donkey Days in Turtle Valley attracted people from Kamloops, Vernon, Kelowna and the Shuswap.

Support for long-ears (as donkey lovers call them) also came from Nova Scotia and Newfoundland.

This year, the Turtle Valley Donkey Refuge has opted to host smaller events and more visiting days. Founder Shirley Mainprize has been rescuing donkeys for 16 years and the refuge has been open to the public since 2007.

he tiny Vietnamese village of My Hoi is not on any tourist map.

Nor is it on the typical tourist itinerary.

Fortunately, however, it’s on mine.

Located 130 kilometres south of Ho Chi Minh City in Tien Giang Province, My Hoi is a poverty stricken town of 8,000 people.

A fellow Canadian friend invited me to join the group of 30 volunteers consisting primarily of Ho Chi Minh doctors and a few Canadians.

Rural villages surrounding My Hoi have also been informed we are here to help.

They work like well-oiled machines. I can see it’s not their first time doing this.

Sick villagers stream in, eagerly hoping to be treated. I feel the optimistic energy of the crowd. Fragile elderly ladies approach me, inquiring where to go for

medical treatment.

I gently take them by the arm and lead them to a line-up for the doctors.

After a brief exchange of smiles, I resume my spot with the volunteers who are bagging gifts.

A family of six Vietnamese doctors are donating their time and the much-needed medicine to help the villagers. They are truly making it a family affair by including their own children who assist by sorting the medicine into individual bags. Children from the local villages are also not forgotten as they run around playing with their new toys.

I watch as one examines a 72-year-old woman.

His serious expression says everything.

“I’m sorry,” he says, “but you are very ill.”

The woman smiles.

“Doctor, I know I’m dying. But I am so happy today. This is the first time in my life I have had the opportunity to be examined by a doctor,” she says.

As I leave the area to watch the distribution of gifts, tears well up in my eyes.

My Canadian friends are handing out gift bags and one friend whispers to me, “This is very sad; we only have 200 bags to distribute, so only the neediest are going to receive the food and blankets.”

She, too, is deeply moved by the experience.

The Kamloops Chamber of Commerce and TD Business Excellence Awards is proud to be celebrating our 29th Anniversary in 2015.

Long considered to be the premiere business event of the year, the Business Excellence Awards are a high profile, prestigious accomplishment for Kamloops businesses. Each year nominations are collected from the middle of May through to the end of June. From there, all nominees are contacted and requested to submit a detailed nomination form which is reviewed by the judges to narrow the field to three finalists in each category. Finalists are formally announced at a ceremony in September. Judges will then interview each of the finalists to determine the winner which is announced at a Gala affair in November. Our judging panel varies for each category and generally consists of a past winner, an award sponsor and someone knowledgeable in the field or category.
