PUPPY PROTECTION

We all want to keep our furry friends safe and sound, so consider stopping by the BC SPCA Kamloops Spay Neuter Clinic and BC Pet Registry for free microchip implantation and registration for your pets. “This wildfire season served as a heartbreaking reminder of how quickly pets can become separated from their families, and how difficult it can be to reunite them when they don’t have identification,” says Kahlee Demers, Senior Manager of Animal Triage and Flow with the BC SPCA. Approximately 85% of stray cats and 40% of stray dogs could not be returned to their homes in 2025 often due to a lack of permanent identification. The event will run from 1–4 p.m. on Sept. 25 at 2816 Tranquille Road.

Council fowards land application without endorsement Sean Brady: Reporter news@kamloopschronicle.com

Kamloops city council has agreed to forward an application to the Agricultural Land Commission to remove a 30-hectare parcel of land in Sahali, but it will do so without endorsing the application. The decision was made following a Sept. 1 public hearing that spanned more than four hours, with most in attendance opposed to developing the land at 2105 Tremerton Dr. The property is located behind McGowan Park elementary school and next to Gambles Pond and is entirely within the Agricultural Land Reserve (ALR). The application will follow two unsuccessful attempts to sever the land from the ALR. In 2006, the owner applied to have 48 ha removed and was denied. Another application in 2024, this time including other owners of adjacent land, was also denied. Lands under the Agricultural Land Commission Act are regulated, with restrictions on building size, subdivision, removal of soil

and more. Any land use bylaws implemented by the city must be endorsed by the commission. Since the 1970s, applications by the city or its residents have excluded about 1,500 hectares of land from the ALR, but 95 percent of that was all before the year 2000, and only 85 hectares have been excluded since that year, according to a city report. Much of the concern from residents at the hearing was over Gambles Pond, which is currently dry from ongoing drought conditions. Many of those speaking were in favour of finding a way to return water to the pond. “We need to preserve the green space. ... Grow Kamloops. I’m all for it, but we need green space, as well,” said Robert Ferris, a nearby resident, who said he has watched wildlife move through the area for nearly 35 years. Another resident said the pond has been a boon to his mental health and may have even saved his life during times of stress. Minutes from the public hearing will accompany the city’s application to the ALC. Following a successful motion from Coun. Margot Middleton to remove any mention of

council supporting the application, council passed the resolution 7-1, with only Mayor Reid Hamer-Jackson opposed. “Because of the mechanisms the ALR has put forth, that applications can only go through a local government, that puts the burden on us to either support or not support, and I’d like to see this be more neutral,” Middleton said. Coun. Neustaeter agreed, saying that council isn’t qualified to support the exclusion, as far as she was concerned. “It’s why the ALC exists. Their expertise in this area is invaluable and to position council ahead of that seems illogical to me,” she said. If the exclusion application to the ALC is successful, more work would need to be done by the city before the land could be developed, including a determination on if the development fits into the city’s official community plan, an infrastructure servicing study, a traffic assessment and a professional environmental report addressing wildlife corridors and riparian buffers. A future parkland dedication and potential future school expansion would also have to be considered.

Watercolour, Creativity, and a Return to Teaching for Karla Pierce Juli Harland: Reporter news@kamloopschronicle.com

After nearly eight years away from teaching, Kamloops artist Karla Pierce is returning to the classroom, a little changed, but with the same passion for art and teaching that she has been so well known for. Pierce stepped away from teaching around 2018 after years of working with young artists, including running an after-school art program at Aberdeen Elementary. During that time, she was dealing with health challenges and some major personal changes in life. She also developed sensitivities to the acrylics and oil paints, which had been her long-time mediums. Between those and the COVID pandemic, what started as a much-needed break became a much longer sabbatical from teaching. But a sabbatical with purpose, it turned out. Pierce didn’t stop creating. She continued showing and selling her work at the Kamloops Farmers’ Market. She also began exploring watercolour, leaving behind the

KARLA PIERCE acrylics and oils and giving herself time to learn an entirely different medium. “As an artist, it takes time to recharge and get your brain working at a level and your heart working at a level where you can con-

nect and share information,” Pierce said. Over those years, watercolour became much more than a substitute for the materials Pierce could no longer comfortably use. She developed a style that bears little resemblance to the delicate washes many people picture when they think of traditional watercolour. Her work combines watercolour paints with white gouache, pencils, sticks and other water-based materials, building layer upon layer of pigment until the colours become rich, vibrant and sometimes almost opaque. Unsurprising, of course, as her art has always broken boundaries in all the best ways. And her art certainly does get well-deserved attention. Pierce says people regularly stop at her Farmers’ Market booth, commenting that the intensity of the colour isn’t what they expect from watercolour. And after eight years of experimenting, learning and developing her own approach to the medium, she decided it was time to get back into the other art that she loves — teaching. Her return to running class-

es comes through a collaboration with Kamloops Art Party and their owner Carly Schmidt. The two became friends years ago while working as instructors for paintnight events, and Pierce watched over the years as Schmidt took her idea for a creative studio from dream to reality. “Reconnecting with her creative energy is great,” Pierce said. “I’m really looking forward to it.” Pierce will begin offering Thursday morning watercolour classes at Kamloops Art Party on Sept. 24. Classes are open to adults at all experience levels, including those who have never picked up a paintbrush, with special pricing available for seniors and people with disabilities. Students will start by learning about the tools they already have. Pierce plans to teach colour mixing and theory, brushes, paper, and how to get the most out of paints that may have been sitting unopened since someone gave them as a gift. From there, she may lead students through a paint-along to build confidence, but ultimately the goal is for each person to begin

creating works of their own, without worrying too much about what art is ‘supposed’ to look like. Pierce went on to describe how trees can be purple. A student can spend the day painting nothing but shades of yellow. Mistakes can be lifted, painted over, incorporated into something else, or, if all else fails, the paper can simply become something new. “It’s just paint. It’s just paper,” she said. “There is no right or wrong way to approach making a piece of art.” That freedom to experiment is at the heart of what Pierce wants to bring back to the classroom. The goal isn’t simply to teach people how to make a watercolour painting, but to help them be more comfortable playing with colour, trust their own creativity, and see what happens when they stop worrying too much about getting it right. Registration will be available online through Pierce’s website at www.karlapearcegallery.ca, or people can talk to her, see her work, and register in person at the Kamloops Farmers’ Market on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

KAMLOOPS BLAZERS PREVIEW 2026 - 2027 BROUGHT TO YOU BY

POSITIVE SIGNS

Marty Hastings: Reporter

news@kamloopschronicle.com

Head coach and general manager Shaun Clouston said determining expectations for his Kamloops Blazers this season is a tricky task, considering his WHL club is not the only one that underwent an off-season overhaul. What is abundantly clear is the Blazers are without their top five scorers from last season, the departures of J.P. Hurlbert, Nathan Behm and Tommy Lafreniere to the NCAA, Josh Evaschesen to the Medicine Hat Tigers and Jordan Keller to graduation creating a 388-point hole in the offence. No player on the roster as of press deadline has compiled more than 40 points in a single WHL campaign, so Kamloops may find it difficult to fill the void. Veterans have been challenged to lead the way. “It’s really important and we’ve had some chats already,” Clouston said. “It doesn’t just happen. Guys in the past made the mistake of thinking, ‘Well, all the top guys are gone, so it’s my turn,’

but if we’ve got a 16-year-old and he’s playing better and he’s having more success, then he’ll be there.” Can 20-year-old WHL rookie Gavin Nemis make a successful jump from the junior A ranks? Will overager Cooper Moore excel in his sophomore season in the league? “It’s not like you have more rights just because you’re older,” Clouston said. “In some ways, it’s the opposite. It’s more responsibility.” Can 18-year-old Ty Bonkowski take the next step? Will Andrew Thomson and Ty Coupland, both 19, be difference-makers? Is injuryplagued European import Vit Zahejsky, 19, primed to reach his potential? “It’s going to be our third or fourth year in the league,” said Bonkowski, the Richmond product who is among captaincy candidates. “It’s going to be a big year for us and we’re going to need to help take charge.” Bright days appear to be ahead up front, with 17-year-olds Jacob Dumansky (who performed well in the playoffs last season) and Asher Gingras anxious to prove their major-junior chops in 20262027, along with 16-year-olds Teagen Bouchard and Brady Ondrus. “I think it’s a year that I could really make an impact,” Bouchard said. “Obviously, I’m 16, but I’m not going to use that as an excuse. I’m a smaller guy, but kind of like to play big-boy hockey.”

Russian import adds to depth on Blazers’ blueline Continued from page B1

Meanwhile, flashy Collin Kim, who turns 16 in October, is pushing for a roster spot, his pre-season Michigan goal garnering attention across the hockey world. “He’s doing everything he needs to do right now to argue his case,” Clouston said earlier this month. There is continuity on the back end, with 19-year-old Isa Guram taking a leadership role in a group that included five returnees as of press deadline. “I don’t think we’re as top heavy this year,” Guram said. “It’s a little more spread out, so I think everyone’s going to have to chip in a little more.” Dallas Stars’ draft pick Mikhail (Misha) Cherepanov has impressed Clouston, the 19-year-old Russian import showing promise since arriving in August. “He’s a good player, fairly direct and simple. He breaks pucks out and he’s competitive,” Clouston said. “His teammates like him.” Mateo Ferreira appears primed to turn heads in his 16-year-old season, the 11th overall pick in the 2025 WHL Prospects Draft showing poise beyond his years. “They went through a little bit of a rough stretch there, but I feel like these past couple of drafts have been really good,” Ferreira said. “We’ve got a lot of young talent that’s going to make footsteps into the league and, hopefully, help our team out as much as they can.” Carson Olsen, 20, Joaquin Geras and Madden Tymchak, both 17, and Dryden Deobald, 18, are among returnees, with Liam Kilfoil, 17, and Ewan Gillis, 18, pushing to join them. In net, 19-year-old incumbent Logan Edmonstone and 17-year-old Kaeden Tate are competing for the crease. Read more about that duel on Page B6. Clouston said it is mandatory that all of his players show up on time and ready to compete, bring a good attitude, work hard, pay attention, buy into team structure and play fast. “The tough part is to say, ‘OK, how far does that take us?’” Clouston said. “Does that put us in the hunt or a little bit higher or a little bit lower? That is tricky. I really like the energy. It’s still early, but there have been some really good signs.”

KAMLOOPS BLAZERS PREVIEW 2026 - 2027

Competing for the crease Marty Hastings: Reporter news@kamloopschronicle.com

Kaeden Tate of Huntington Beach, Calif., is 6-foot-4 and entering his 17-year-old season with lofty goals. “Yeah, coming for that starting position, coming for Eddy’s spot,” the Golden State goaltender said with a smile. Competition in the crease is a storyline for the Kamloops Blazers. Logan Edmonstone is the 19-year-old incumbent. The 5-foot-11, 173-pound netminder from Saskatoon earned the No. 1 job last season after jostling for position with Latvian import Ivans Kufterins, who is no longer with the club. Edmonstone posted a 22-16-4-4 record and a .902 save percentage in the 2025-2026 regular season. He recorded a .866 save percentage in four post-season games. “Logan is the beneficiary of being here for a few years,” Blazers’ director of goaltending Dan De Palma said. “He bought in early, embraced the habits and you can see it paying off for him. We expect big things from Logan.” The Blazers nabbed Tate 23rd overall in the 2024 U.S. Priority Draft. He spurred excitement in the fan base last season, posting a .919 save percentage in two starts for Kamloops, both wins. “Playing with that speed and then going

back home, it just slows the game down so much for me,” he said. “Everything just felt like it was coming to me a little easier, a little slower, and giving me more time.” Tate, who backstopped the U.S. to silver at the Hlinka Gretzky Cup in August in Edmonton, sees both the advantages and potential pitfalls of his height. “A little more access to those far pucks, those high pucks, but I’ve got to make sure I’m not slow,” Tate said, noting he works on agility and quickness in the gym. “That’s really the thing with the big guys, making sure they’re not slow.” Added De Palma: “Kaeden uses his size really well. He gets around the crease. So, if Kaeden can get to his spots, he’s going to take away a lot of net, and he’s good at making sure there are no holes when he gets there.” Tate stopped 58 of 61 shots in pre-season action. Edmonstone allowed 10 goals on 78 shots in exhibition play. The competition between Edmonstone and Tate appears to be healthy, as does their relationship. “There is no beef, nothing,” Tate said. Added Edmonstone: “I met him last year. It’s really good. We’re close buddies now and I look forward to having him as a buddy all season.”

Kamloops Rock Choir ready to bring the house down Anna Montaner: Reporter

news@kamloopschronicle.com

Kamloops is getting ready for a different kind of choir concert, one where the music is loud, the lights are bright and the audience is encouraged to sing along. The Kamloops Rock Choir will take the stage Sunday, Sept. 27, and Monday, Sept. 28, for its debut performances, backed by a live band and featuring songs from Blink-182, AC/DC, Heart, Joan Jett, Talking Heads and more. The all-ages shows will also raise money for Mount Paul Community Food Centre. Choir creator Nick La Riviere said the project was designed to bring the energy of a rock show into a choral setting. “I wanted to create something where the band is there at every rehearsal, and you can build the music

The Kamloops Rock Choir, pictured here during their April 16 performance, will return to the stage on Sept. 27.

together,” La Riviere said. “And where the concerts truly rock, where they really feel like a rock concert instead of a more mellow, like choir version of rock songs.”

The Kamloops choir is one of seven Rock Choirs La Riviere has established across B.C. He develops the musical arrangements and other resources used by the choirs, while local directors

lead their communities. In Kamloops, that role belongs to Brendan Methot, a multi-instrumentalist who has lived in the city since 2000 and plays piano, bass, drums and guitar.

already been strong. The choir’s first performance sold out months ahead of time, prompting organizers to add a second show this month. See SPOTLIGHT on A7

Stepping into the spotlight with the Kamloops Rock Choir Continued from A6 For La Riviere, the charitable component is just as important as the music. His community music projects have traditionally used performances to support local causes, particularly organizations working on food security and homelessness. “With each choir I run, if we can support a charity that is related to that, then we’re doing something positive for the community, as well as putting on a great musical show and having a great time with the members of the choir,” La Riviere said. That combination is also central to what La Riviere hopes audiences experience. The show is intended to stand on its own as an entertaining concert, whether or not someone in the crowd knows a member of the choir. “My goal for the show has always been to make

it the kind of performance that you would want to go see, whether you know people in the choir or not,” La Riviere said. “It’s about seeing a show that is actually entertaining and musically good and does a good thing for the community with the charity fundraiser aspect.” For the performers, the concerts offer a chance to step into the spotlight. Some choir members have extensive musical experience, while others are newer to performing. With professional lighting, sound and a live backing band, La Riviere said the stage gives participants an opportunity to embrace their inner rock star. After months of rehearsals, the Kamloops Rock Choir is ready to put that work in front of an audience. With two shows now on the calendar, organizers are hoping the community turns out to make the debut

Ursa Major Gold, Silver & Coin returns to Kamloops on September 28th & 29th. You can bring your gold, silver, coins and Canadian paper money to the Kamloops Yacht Club between 10am and 4pm each day. No appointment is required. Barry Dick is a precious metals buyer and President of Ursa Major Gold, Silver & Coin. “Ursa Major has the unique advantage of dealing directly with a smelter,” said Dick. “That allows us to cut out one or even two middlemen. Ursa Major purchases gold and silver from other gold buyers, pawn shops, dentists, jewellers and jewellery makers as well as the public.” In terms of the US dollar, gold and silver prices appear low but the weak Canadian dollar means prices are strong. Ursa Major analyzes your gold, silver, coins, and paper money while you watch, with the process explained to you in detail. Coins with numismatic value are graded and set aside from those with a ‘melt’ value. Silver items such as jewellery and flatware are analyzed for hallmark identification. Items thought to contain gold will also be analyzed for hallmarks, and then confirmed using precise testing that is done while you watch. Then a cash offer is presented and you decide to sell or not. “If you decide to sell after hearing the quote, great, but it is also about information” says Dick. “A lot of times people just need to know a ballpark of what things are worth; we don’t pressure anyone into selling”. Dick took out his first gold claim when he turned 16 in the 1970’s and has been involved with precious metals ever since.
