ESCAPING BANKRUPTCY

How an event planner innovated her way to profit

S

ome months ago, I met with a friend whose company helps Marketing Managers of multinationals to runsuccessful events. She had an enviable portfolio, and had done events for some of Africa’s biggest multinationals, cutting across telecommunications, oil & gas, business consulting, and governments. Yet she felt, something was amiss.

It appeared her clients were not getting as much value from events as before. Sure, they still organised events, but allocated budgets were shrinking. Her revenue was taking a hit.

She needed to find a solution. Fast.

But clearly the old playbook wasn’t working. She needed something new, something fresh.

But what?

Several experiments, event management books, and blog articles later, she met with me over coffee at the Makonjo Media R & D office in Silicon Mountain for a chat. We talked strategy for hours. Everything I proposed fell into her bin. She had tried all those tricks.

She forced me to put off all my meetings. “We must figure this out,” she said. “How do we make sure I continue doing events? Events are my life and I must make it work”.

I reached out to my creative team for help. We pulled together different framework templates. Value Proposition framework, Business Model Canvas, Blue Ocean Strategy Canvas, Positioning Canvas, Fishbone diagrams and more. And many hours later, we had nothing.

It was not until somebody among the creative team started asking the right questions that we began to make headway. He asked: “What if the success of the event is not a problem?

What if the success of your client’s business after the event is the real problem?

What if you can continue to work with your clients to achieve real success after the event?

What if you stop seeing your businessf as an Event company and start seeing it as a sales company?

After all, isn’t the real objective of your client to make sales?”

T

hat was the spark that led us back to the whiteboards and frameworks. We had to help our friend discover how she could help her clients make sales. If an event business is actually a different kind of sales business, then by maximizing her clients’ investments to guarantee and grow returns, then she would be back in business.

She saw herself back in business. The planning, the tickets, the sending of invitations, the opening prayers, and the long list of “atalkus” MCs use to address the guests of honor.

These same techniques could also be used to nurture panelists and speakers by engaging them with the planning process so that they are as invested in the events as my friend’s clients themselves. This will reduce the likelihood of them cancelling.

We were gradually developing a framework for Digital Marketing for Events. We just didn’t know it yet. My friend on her part simply wanted to create more value for her clients through her events. That would surely bring back the previous budget sizes.

We based our plan of action on two digital marketing frameworks the “Content Funnel” and the “Sales Funnel”.

We knew that if we used targeted social and search advertising to attract the right audience with the help of a lead capture that will be of interest only to the client’s target market, we would be able to attract the right audience. We could then collect the contact information of interested participants so that we could continue to nourish, so as to increase their likelihood of attending the event.

In between the nourishment, we could offer special treats like discounts and coupons for event tickets, hotel rooms and other necessities to attendees. We could even take it to the next level by offering specials like free private sessions to expert consultants and bonus packages. This would attract and convert just the right persons the clients needed for their events

We could accomplish all these using email marketing, SMS marketing, and retargeting advertising techniques.

For that we decided to use Marketing Automation. The contacts of all participants who indicated interest in the event and those who finally attended the event would be put into a marketing automation system in different lists. By strategically sending value-adding messages, sandwiched with promotional messages using permission marketing principles, we would help her clients to continue closing deals and enjoying the ROI of the events months and even years after the event. Contacts in the list would gradually be graduated into her client’s CRM (Customer Relationship Management System).

This was it. She got it.

Today, she not only gets better budgets assigned to her events, she also enjoys a retainer deal with her clients wherein, Makonjo partners with her to maintain their marketing automation systems after events.

At the production level, we work with her to handle the production of all digital assets comprising logo design, graphic design, web development, social media audit and redesign, marketing automation setup, email copywriting and more.

We connect all the tools and platforms we use to make sure all leads captured are collected into the marketing automation system.

At the distribution and maintenance level, we work with her to maintain the event’s social media pages, ticketing page, customer support, digital ads optimization and more.

We keep the presence online alive and ahead.

We look forward to working with other event marketing companies and marketing managers to help them offer real value to their clients. We believe that our efforts in this value chain helps us win because at the end of the day, we are the clients of our client’s client’s clients.

Kamer Link has built a strong team behind the Magazine consisting of young, passionate and innovative entertainment stakeholders; Clarisse Ndinge(Beta Media), Lukong Jude(Hovareigns), Ndedi Asek (Asek Arts), Gina Ebob(Miss Gina Promotes), Kelly Munge(Kameroon Beauty), Mbah Emmanuel, Lyonga Darling(Trackz On Fire), Angwere Miranda (Trend Camer) and my humble self Felix. What we have as Kamer Link Magazine today is a collective effort from this dedicated 9 man team. The creative portfolio is now driving creative collaboration amongst creative individuals from all fields, featuring them in this first issue of the magazine.

The Magazine features some of the country’s best artists, animators, musicians, bloggers, writers, photographers, models, media presenters, actors and fans. This is no ordinary feature but it is a vision tied into seeding growth and innovation in these communities.

It’s been a tug of war trying to get Cameroonians to realize the quality of talent we have back home and abroad. Right now I can say we are recording enormous progress, judging from recent happenings in the entertainment industry. Apart from raw material; crude oil, cocoa, coffee, timber etc, our country can also export finished products of entertainment.

Our success strides are remarkable and I believe it’s time to step up the energy and of course spotlight our stars. The Kamer Link Magazine is here to do just that!

DISCOVER CAMEROON THE BEAUTY OF LIMBE

L

imbe, formerly called Victoria by the British missionary Alfred Saker of the Baptist Missionary Society of London in 1885 during the colonial era, is a very attractive town in the South West Region of Cameroon.

She is located on a beautiful bay against the backdrop of a major mountain range. Black sand beaches make Limbe one of two coastal towns (Kribi being the other with white sand) that are popular among Western tourists. The Limbe Wildlife Centre, a center for the rehabilitation and protection of some endangered animal species; and Limbe Botanical Garden with its rich and divers plant species, a center for recreation, education, relaxation, research etc., are notable attractions. Not forgetting Bimbia in Limbe with the site of an old slave trading port where slaves were assembled for exportation to Europe and America during the period of slave trade. Some historical attractions still present in Bimbia today include; Old German Wharf where ships anchored for the embarkation of slaves, chains used on slaves and abandoned Ship, the Alfred Saker Camp (where Alfred Saker first landed in Cameroon, A monument has been constructed to commemorate his arrival); the British Canon (an instrument used to abolish slave trade); and Nichol Island (site that harbored slaves prior to their journey to the new world).

Limbe is considered a good region in the country in terms of night life, from live divers music (Neptune, Bamboo bar) to cool clubs (Palace night club, Calypso) and snack bars (Ocean Blues, Maxim) which will give you the groove of night time in Limbe. It is the home to the Bakweri people with fishermen villages, to experience the different method of fishing with an opportunity to do inshore fishing.

You also will fancy the Limbe amusement park for some Kiddo fun.

The official language is English, although French is spoken due to the city’s geographic proximity to the nation’s economic capital, Douala(70killometers), where the official language is French. Most of the population speak Cameroonian Pidgin English. When you create time to enjoy the beauty of nature, Limbe has it all from beautiful and affordable hotels in the heart of the city like: Trinity Hotel, Lady L Hotel/ Restaurant, Atlantic Beach Hotel with a beautiful sea side view, and Holiday Inn Resort. he Movie Industry Before now I’d like to term the spirit in the industry before ‘A numb one’ meaning we had no competition and no market for our movies. No one really cared to make movies knowing that there was no market. In the past we had very few producers making movies.We never really had producers coming up or wanting to tell stories in different ways, very few movies being produced yearly, very few actors and I would say no one actually recognized that there was a film industry in Cameroon.

The Movie Industry Today Today it’s entirely a different case.

I’ll term it the “striving one”. The Cameroon movie industry started a long time ago, even before NOLLYWOOD. We’ve always had what it takes to make good movies and to have an outstanding film industry. I guess the wind of change has blown across the industry and we’ve had a ‘wakeup call’ which has brought more producers, more actors and more people willing to join/support the industry and hence a high level of competition among producers, actors and technicians. Hence the need for creation of a market system, cinema halls and more. The industry has recorded a step-up in the production of movies and a higher level of professionalism in the way the movies are shot, the way the stories are told and in the way the craft is being exposed generally.

The Negatives The very first issue is the fact that we are not able to work together. At this very early stage, movie makers should be coming together and getting/offering help to one another so the industry would go major steps further. If only people would work together, then the productions coming out of Cameroon would be way stronger than what they are right now.

Producers should be able to work together, actors should be able to support each other and recommend each other for projects.

The Positive Side The positive side lies in the high level of competition with the projects coming out. Seeing a movie as a film maker and striving to do more in terms of level of production, image, sound,storytelling and acting. There is a high level of competition with the quality of movies being made which is a good thing.

The producers are stepping up their game and coming out with good products ready for the market both at home and abroad. I like that.

The destiny of our industry When I say we are ready, it’s because it’s about to blow. I mean, the world is not ready yet. They are not ready for what the Cameroonian movie industry is about

Projects To watch out for There are a lot of projects to watch out for and a lot of people to watch out for. The most exciting thing I’m proud of is talent which is coming up every day. New actors, producers, directors, technicians etc. That’s how an industry should be and that’s how you know there is growth taking place.Generally I’d say every project coming out now should be watched out for because no one is sleeping. Everyone is stepping up the game.

To Movie Lovers For those who have been supporting, I’d say thank you for the support so far. For those who have not been supporting us I’d say come out and support us because it’s not just about sitting, complaining and criticizing but suggesting ways to better the industry. The little support you put in could create a huge impact somewhere, you have no idea.

For those willing to get into the industry, they should consider. It’s not just about quitting school and saying you want to be an actor or film maker. You need to go to school, study, have a dream, a vision, a focus in life, then you can better make a decision to get into the movie industry.

To movie makers My advice is simple; support one another, push one another up and continue with the hard work because it’s not just the talent but its talent blended with hard work that takes people places they had no idea they’d be. Keep on with the good job not forgetting God who is the center of everything. Don’t think that because you won an award or because you have directed/produced this number of movies, you are so good. No, we learn every day. Dear movie makers, go back to your drawing boards every time, study and learn from people who’ve done it before and better your craft.

Talents To Watch Mic Monsta : Born and bred in Kumba, Molua

Alous Mosima aka Mic Monsta started rapping in 2008 at the age of 16 and in 2010 he kicked off his professional career recording his first song “I No Get Chorus” which went viral in Kumba. This was followed by a series of successful covers off his mix tape “My thoughts” which paved his way into Best Music Inc u n der which he gained more street credibility, releasing his h i t single “N Word” (Ice Prince cover) and earning a feature in Jovi’s “Et P8 Koi” R e mix. Then came USA based music label Kreef Entertainment with a good deal which he jumped to, releasing “KingKong” (Vector cover) ft Crispy which took Kamer music fans by storm. He later released his first official single under Kreef Entertainment titled “Fear” followed by “Kwata State Of Mind”, “Freedom of speech”, etc confirming the fact that he is one of Cameroon’s most promising talents.

Berinyuy Bertrand

: Berinyuy Bertrand Shybam is a young Cameroonian model who hails from the North West Region. His love for fashion and new trends nurtured a strong urge to get involved in the fashion industry. He finally satisfied this urge in 2014 by making his first modeling tryouts. In 2015 he went professional with the determination to inscribe his name in the f a s h ion record books with a bold point. So far he has m o d eled for top Camer oonian designers, storming the runway at events like FIAFA, NIKI HEAT, PROJECT NEW BAMENDA, CAMEROON TOP MODEL ETC. He has also done commercials for businesses like; BIOPHARMA and BIG YELLOW PAGES (Android App). Bertrand’s major breakthrough came after he was selected to take part in the Cameroon Top Model TV Show being the only English speaking Cameroonian candidate. His unique looks, height, body build, skin colour and hair clearly distinct him from the ordinary.

KGD : Kamer Great Dancers “KGD” is an all female dance crew based in Buea. KGD consists of three vibrant Cameroonian girls who go by the show names; “Pamzy, JJ, Veena and Maya. They have been operating professionally since 2015. They dance all brands of music but focus more on Afro s o n g s which satisfies their primary goal being to promote the African culture. Dancing being their passion, the KGD girls have unfailingly met the expectations of their fans, performing with top Cameroonian artists, a long list of music videos.

Ko-C : Njang Collins aka Ko-C kicked off his pro-

fessional music career in 2015. He was part of the PIM BOYS crew and after the release of their hit single “Ici au Kamer”, he decided to go solo.

Ko-C has set himself apart from every other artiste through his unique style, introducing his solo career with outstanding covers of popular songs like “Panda” and “All the way up” then finally icing the cake with a breath taking debut single titled “Balancé” followed by “I Love You” in collaboration with Locko. Ko-C is currently regarded as the fastest Cameroonian rapper.

Malvis Ann : Malvis Ann Mohvu is a Camer-

oonian actress from the north west region. The 24year old got her debut role in the TV series Rumble currently airing on CRTV. She has also acted in movies like “barefoot on broken bottles” and “before you say I do”.

Venturing into designing and is a budding entrepreneur and social lite..

She loves working with kids and hopes to have an orphanage named after her. Malvis Ann strives towards making a change in the world in the biggest way possible.

Mimie

: Mimie Ngoga known by the stage name M.I.M.I.E debuted her professional music career in 2014 with her first official single “Warriors”. This came soon after she introduced herself with acoustic covers such as Hein Pere by Stanley Enow which won her a stage opening performance at a Stanley Enow Concert in Cameroon. MIMIE went further to release hit singles; “Dance Fi You” and “Dona” which ironed her place in the hearts of music lovers nationwide. Mimie is currently hitting every major stage, TV/Radio shows and collaborations with other artistes while raising anticipation for next hit. Her unique voice and great ability to dance has made her a potential music goddess not only in the studio but also on stage.

Mink’s : La vingtaine entamée, Mink’s se positionne aujourd’hui comme l’avenir du rap camerounais. En 2008 alors élève au collège des Lauréats, Minkada Franck Stéphane commence à écrire des textes dans les rues du quartier bonamoussadi à douala avec quelques voisins et amis d’enfance tous fans de youssoupha, Kanye West et Jay z.

V é r i t a b l e kickeur, Mink’s aime la compétition. Il d é cide de se mesurer a u x autres en participant avec brio à plusieurs concours de rap et projets comme mboa come test, NSC3, AKDMY, MTNmake the music et Cameroon Hip Hop Talent Search qui lui permettent de se faire un nom et lui donnent l’opportunité d’intégrer le label ACH4LIFE. He creates art that voice out the essence of human beauty and strength of the spirit.

Tenor enregistre son premier single intitulé MAMAN rendant ainsi hommage à sa maman et a toutes celles du monde.

Il rencontre le groupe de musique GAME B O Y S , avec lequel il travaille sous le label 937 muzikstar.

Avec ce label, le jeune prodige vas faire des merveilles, un vidéogramme intitulé GOOD STYLE en feat avec GAME BOYS et MISSI G STILL DASH. Il décide par la suite de faire un single intitulé ALLELUIA, son premier freestyle titré CAMEROUNAIS. Briana Lesley :

Bertha Lesley Ndiba, aka Briana Lesley born on the 15th of September 1995 in Limbe is a Cameroonian artiste/ model/vixen/actress. Briana Lesley has been in the entertainment Scene for a while developing herself more as a model/ vixen/backup singer. Nevertheless, she held onto her burning desire to become C a m e r o o n ’s finest female artiste.

Her most recent material; a mashup of Cameroon’s top trending Afropop songs paved her way deep into the souls of her die heart fans and music lovers. A music cover well received by entertainment bloggers, endorsed by hit makers & producers. This was followed by a breath taking debut single titled; ‘Falling’. She is not only here to stay but also to create a lifetime legacy of good music for her fans. Briana Lesley is highly supported and managed by OZI International, a brand known for its groundbreaking excellence in Fashion designing and top of the line creativity.

What were your dreams, growing up, did you always want to be an artiste?

- (chuckles) growing up as a kid, music was never in the picture, even when i got into arts, music wasn’t still on my mind. Actually I started with painting, I was very good at it. After that (chuckles) I went to football. So u see music was last.

everyone followed that trend then i came to boycott that in the name of doing music. it was crazy,a real battle, (chuckles) I can’t even explain. But of course it took me proving to them that music was worth doing in Cameroon, music can pay bills ,and even them. And finally they came around so and i can proudly say i have their full support.

Which artistes would you say influenced your love for music, growing up?

- What actually touches me is the music itself not the person behind the music. Good music is good music doesn’t matter if it is coming from someone down the streets ; what matters is if its real or natural. If it has all these characteristics then fine. Quand c’est bon c’est bon.

So when did you start doing music professionally?

In 2010. You know! I started singing way back about 9, 10 years ago, 2007/2008 and ehmm yah. But music actually became serious business for me around 2010.

Do your parents and family support your music? Have they always supported?

- Yes they do, I think everyone does (chuckles) but the truth is they were not in support of it at the start you know! My Dad was a very strict person. He had this formula he applied to all his kids; go to school, get certificates, get a job and stuff. So imagine 12

for music, but you went through with your education. What was your drive - Yeah like I told you, it was never easy convincing my family to let me do music. Of course it’s that thing I love doing so much and all that. But truth be told whatever you are doing, whatever you really want to do, you need your family’s blessings. But

they would not give it to you if they are not fine with what you are doing. But I used it as a trick, I got them the certificates and they let me do music, . That’s the price I had to pay if not they would not I won’t b here. May be with some other guy the case was different but in my case I had no choice. I could still go, get stubborn and do it but you know! I like the clean shit you know! I wanted it that way. I wanted them to be with me, you know!

I wanted them with me each step of the way.

How did your journey with Alpha Better records begin?

- It wasn’t easy from the onset. But then it became progressive as we went deep today its at a geometric rate because we have put in our all. It took time, energy, money, sleepless nights, prayers and we gave in all that. So far I think we are on the right track, judging from our fans, we are on the right path.

So you have been with the label for over 6 years now, how would you describe your journey so far?

- Yeah ah… that’s because we are a team. I mean! its Alpha Beta is not just Mr Leo. That means we have a whole team behind that monitors, you know! That assists, that runs every affair. What I do is, I just make sure I do good music and we all decide when its right for song to be released.

I personally, I do songs. I record maybe with Salatiel or any other producer available. So that’s how we roll.

You are one of the few Cameroonian artistes who has succeeded to gain the hearts of Cameroonians all over Cameroon, that is from the North to South, East to West, unlike some artistes who have fans chunked in one region, you have succeeded to cut across. How did you do that?

- How did I do that? it all started with the single “Ei go be. I released my first single 2014/2015, but then I started working with the record label 2010. I mean from 2010-2014, it’s not because we didn’t have songs to release but because we wanted the perfect single for Mr Leo. We wanted something with that wow effect. We wanted a song that will cut across Cameroon because it is a bilingual country. We didn’t want any language barriers either as well as age group differences. It was not easy but I derived a strategy that worked for me. Now to cut across every age group, I thought of the youths, I thought of the aged people and most of the time 98% of them don’t want noise. That is the first reason why “Ei go better” is a cool and calm song that was to bring them close. But then to make the youths come into it I had to speak their language.

You know, pidgin English, franc-anglais, mboko and all that, so the song was able to merge he two audiences.. And when we succeeded with “Ei go better” and hence other songs have followed quite the same trend 9.

Your music is original, we want to get in touch with your creative process a little bit…Tell us the things you do in between composing a track? What is your muse? What inspires you?

Originality is a key factor, originality is very important in anything you’re doing.Originality comes from don there;from where you started. When you are on your way to that place you are going, when you are looking for means to get there that’s when you choose to either keep your originality or lose it. Once you lose it, it’s not easy to become a professional in that field and bring your originality back, it’s not easy.

You know! That’s the mistake people. That’s when you either choose to stay original or lose it. Being good in what you are doing is different from being good in it and being original in doing it. Those are two different things. Any way that’s that. About how I come about my songs; each song comes

to me as an entire project. I don’t just wake up and just write.I have many things I put in place; what’s the state of the industry? What works I mean, what’s actually working? I ask myself those questions. What genre of music are people going in for now? How do I make mine special?. Now, how is the video of this song going to look like? I mean it comes to me like a whole concept. Like before I finish writing, I already know how I want the video to look like. You know! I think o f the stage, how am I going to perform this song? How am I going to communicate with my audience? Like when am on stage right, now I could sing from start to end of course they will enjoy it, it’s Mr Leo singing. But when do they sing with me? Which part of the song permits them to sing with me? That’s how you get to make your show. I think of all those things when am writing the song.So that a clue of how i do it.

Did your teach yourself how to play the guitar?

- I am still learning how to play the guitar, hopefully in a few months I will be very good. It takes a bit of time and I have to put in more hours. In a short while, I will be a good guitarist but for now am still learning.

All your major releases have been hit records, do you have a special formula you use? How do you know which song to release?

- Yeah ah… that’s because we work as a team. That means we have a whole team behind that monitors, you know! That assists, that runs every affair. I just make sure I do good music. That’s how we work actually. We just do songs and songs and songs. You know! And when it’s time for a release, we then sit down as a team and decide which song to release. I record maybe with Salatiel or any other producer available.

Most often it’s with Salatiel. At the end of the day we come up with the songs. Each time we have an opportunity to do a song, we do and we sit down as a team and we decide on which song we all think should be released at that moment and we go ahead and we the release. So it’s about team work.

You are one of those few Cameroonian artistes who is succeeding to earn a decent living out of music. You have succeeded to turn your passion into a genuine business. What is it about you that makes it all possible?

- God works in mysterious ways. I don’t know how to detail out how I turned my passion to a living. You know! I really don’t know how to explain that. I just know that am a very hard working person. I work hard and I pray hard. I try my very best to keep a clean sheet. You know! Those are just the things I do. The rest is God’s doing.

5 cups of rice (Basmati preferably) 1 whole chicken or 4 -6 chicken split chicken breast(3 to4lbs) or 3 to 4 Lbs of beef stew 4 cups of coconut milk 1 large onions 4 large Jamaican hot pepper ½ large red bell pepper ½ large green bell pepper ½ cut leeks 1 cup of canola oil ½ teaspoon salt 3-4 bouillon cubes (Maggi) 4 cups of water 3 stem of celery 2 stems of green onion 3 cups of green beans 3 cups of carrots

Method:

-Prepare and cut chicken into moderate sizes as desired spice with white pepper, black pepper and pinch of salt and 1 bouillon cube and bake for about 20 to 30 minutes or until cooked.

-Put coconut milk in blender, add spices and puree - Warm up your oil and add coconut milk with pureed spices. Add 3 to 4 tablespoons of curry powder.

- Add 4 cups of water.

-Add bouillon cubes and salt to taste and bring to a boil for about 3mins - Add rice and cook on low to medium for about 20 to 30 minutes or until cooked.

After application, you either get a matte finish, satin finish or dewy finish 2) Cream foundation: Similar to liquid but the texture is thicker. They usually come in compact, jar or pump. Goes best with dry skin or normal skin because it’s very hydrating, has better coverage and more moisturizing components.

3) Stick foundation: comes in the form of a stick and best for really oily skin since the skin is well moisturized and has a good base for the stick foundation to melt.

Nsang D: Nsang Dilong is an ex beauty queen( Miss West Africa Cameroon 2011) , a model, an actress and founder of Dilong Entertainment. She is also a Cameroonian woman using her talent to impact her society.

2. When/Why did you embark on this journey and how hard has it been for you so far?

Nsang D: It all started in 2012 but got serious in 2014. So far it’s been good and it only gets better. The Cameroon film industry is growing.

3. You have made quite an impact already. Are you satisfied with your success? How do you feel about the response you are getting?

Nsang D: Well, I am not where I was and I am not yet where I want to be, but I am a hard worker, as well as a smart worker, so things will only get better. The response from the fans is very encouraging

Nsang D: Yes, I know Paulina will become my trademark because I work with a team that believes in Paulina and are working so hard to see her big.

Nsang D: I am yet to act my hardest role. I believe someone is writing that script somewhere. The most fun role will be Paulina. She is crazy, funny and stupid, so yea I love Paulina. As for my dream role I don’t really have one. I just want to play characters who either challenge me, inspire the society or make people laugh.

9. Name 5 Cameroonian actors you would like to work with.

Nsang D: I have already worked with a few of those I would really like to work with. The ones I am yet to work with will be Christa Eka, Lucie Memba,Itambi Delphine, Ivan Namme and several others.

10. In your opinion, what’s the biggest problem the movie industry in Cameroon is facing right now and how can it be solved?

Nsang D: I would say we lack markets for our movies. Film makers need to find a way to market their movies. We need marketers, if possible a marketers guild, as lack of markets for our movies is scaring away potential investors.

11. Any word for aspiring actors?

Nsang D: Just like Meryl Streep once said, “Giving voice to characters that have no other voice , that’s the great worth of what we do.” You have to be passionate about your craft, ready to learn. Be you, don’t try to be someone else. Work hard and smart, and trust me you will be a success story.

We know you are not married yet, any near plans? LOL - Of course I have a girlfriend, common am not gay. But about marriage, I cannot tell for sure. Of course I want to get married tomorrow, have kids, make a family. But that would come when it would come.it could be tomorrow, a week from now, two years, five years three months, you never can tell. You can never tell how these things will happen.

Describe the type of girl you would love to marry.

- Of course being beautiful is a must But in this case, I mean the real definition of beauty. Beauty has a lot to do with your heart it’s not just your looks, I want inner beauty as well. I don’t have any language barrier, color barrier or what so ever. When it comes to love, it’s not easy to predict. It comes to you like a thief in the night and you never know. You only realize (chuckles) yourself when you are into it so.

Do people judge you sometimes based on your dreadlocks? LOL. Is there any particular reason why you chose that hairstyle?

- Yeah a lot of people do that. A lot of people judge me from my hair style they assume everyone with dreadlocks smokes marijuana 98% of people do that. Now it’s different, because they now know me as Mr Leo. They know me as a musician, an artist they love. They don’t really get to judge me a lot these days, but when I started doing my dreads it was hell even my dad. Why I choose it because I needed a look for myself, not a look to be changed very often. I checked out a few and dreadlocks was the one I choose.

From our inquiries many people say you have remained humble despite your fame. What keeps you level headed?

- It all stems from my upbringing and my mum had big role to play in this, also I have my principles. The fact that am Mr Leo today and am making money and succeeding with my career doesn’t mean I should become disrespectful or aggressive. What do I lose staying humble, absolutely nothing.

- What advice do you have for artists who are not patient enough with their record labels. You’ve stuck with Alpha Beta for years now.

- It takes alot of time and sacrifice to make it. With a record label, if it was of no use to you, you wouldn’t join it. You joined the label because you have something to offer besides your talent. . Okay I do a very good song, people love it and then I keep it in my cupboard.

Nothing changes it stays there until the day you decide to open that cupboard and let it out. But it’s some other person’s job to take that song to the consumer. It’s not your job, you cannot do it better than that person. That’s why we have bloggers, TV presenters, radio animators, DJs and all that. People are specialized in different things and it’s this team that makes you a star and thats what happened with my label You just have to know what works for you. You never know the kind of deal an artist signs until you see that paper, you understand! If you are given a good deal, then there is no need for you to leave. If you are leaving, leave for the right reason, if you are staying stay for the right reason.

Why do you think some artists can’t make an honest living out of music?

- About that I think some of them focus too much on the music side of it, which is good but then they forget the business side of it and that’s where the problem is. You know! It doesn’t end with you being a good singer and doing a good song. You have to make sure that song gives you money. How does that song give you money? It means people have to listen to it, then call you up for shows then pay you so that you make money of it. There are questions you have to ask yourself, and to ask yourself these questions you have to see music as a business. Ask yourself those questions that any business man will ask himself; what am I producing? Where am I producing? To whom am I producing? You know you ask yourself these questions. First of all it guides you to know the kind of music and where. I cannot came to Cameroon and am doing rock. Why? It’s not because rock is a bad genre of music but because people don’t listen to rock too much in Cameroon a few do but people don’t listen to rock. That’s just a clue of what I think some artists should consider in doing music.

18. when you are not doing music ,what else keeps you busy.

- Besides being on stage, radio session, TV programs, you know! Studio and all that, I love sports, more football and I love to party yeah I love to party. Learning without play makes Jack a doll boy. So anything to do to take off the stress then am good to go .You can call me a party freak that’s when I have time lol...

What is your advice for youths who see you as the model?

I always say this and never change it. It goes to every other person who has passion for any field. Take your time, to choose carefully what you really want to do because that’s the most important part of it that will either make or break you. Once you’ve found it, then work hard.
