Alongside his interest, enthusiasm and application to the coursework I found Kalpak to be an attentive, good natured and polite student. At every stage of the year under my teaching and also with my colleagues he strove to push him self, his intellectual approach and his architectural design output to the highest level. I have been asked by Mr Kalpak Kala to provide a reference in support of his application to work as an architectural assistant following completion of his Bachelor Degree at the Liverpool School of Architecture. I am a part time tutor (university teacher) at the school of architecture, teaching in the third year of the Architecture BA (Hons) course. I have been in this position for 15 years. I am also a practicing architect, being Partner at the Manchester, UK, studio of Sheppard Robson LLP.
With my colleagues, I taught Kalpak during the 2019- 20 academic year. Specifically, I was his lead studio design tutor for both semesters. He is a thoughtful, talented and hard working student who took his studies seriously, applying him self diligently in terms of design production and in intellectual striving. ARHAM URBANIA
Indian temples are a marvellous feat of rock-cut architecture with a prominent feature of rhythmic patterns rising from the earth towards the sky in temple architecture. This physical and metaphorical aura was the drawing inspiration for the elevation of the project. The colonnade rise from the ground later bends and blend with the beam bands wrapping up the complete building.

Arham Urbania is a 120-apartments residential scheme with about 300,000 sq ft area. It is located in the heart of Aurangabad near Gajanan Maharaj Mandir (Temple). I was responsible for developing form-giving elevations for the project with a strict condition, not making changes in the floor plan and structural detailing. Therefore, the task was to produce the best form within a limited frame. I was also closely involved in developing brochures, choosing appropriate viewpoints for marketing renders and landscape designing for creating an impactful synergy.

It has 89-row houses and 168 apartments masterplan. It provides amenities like a temple, two clubhouses with an indoor gymnasium, basketball court, turf, skating rink, lawn tennis court, volleyball court and vegetated recreational areas. Alongside adding multifunction spaces; consideration of Government Policies, Economic Factors, Tax Exemption Schemes and Socio-cultural factors played a critical role in the development of the scheme. I chose an integrated approach towards factors influencing the design is crucial to achieving a highly desirable product that is developed in the best interest of all parties; customers, developers, architects and other members involved.

IDIOSYNCRATIC ARCHITECTURE
After World War 2, the UK had faced a massive housing crisis. The government had to incentivise huge housing developments for its citizen. Similarly, the Indian government today is incentivising developers for developing housing schemes. For the housing development proposal of Carnatic Halls, I was able to analyse how people responded to such developments collectively and individually over some time. Interestingly, people expressed beautifully by decorating their houses to their favourite colours whilst respecting their neighbours dwelling architectural elements like the roof and windows stayed intact over some time. This observation throughout the time helped me imagine future possibilities of changes to our proposal and the form of the structure. I proposed to emphasise elements that don’t change like roof and sharing wall as the boundary; dividing and defining the shape of each row house. The form is such that celebrates the transition and repetitiveness of row houses. By this approach, the architectural form of this group housing is intact in the long run while owners are flexible to beautify their dwelling as per their convenience and interests.

Bombay Heights is an 80,000 sq ft commercial complex developed by Shashwat group on Beed ByPass, Aurangabad. It is an nine-storey high, proposed to target middle-income group investors.
Contrast is one of the most striking observations humans experience. The perforations in Jali don’t only create fascinating daylight patterns but also protect building users from harsh afternoon southern sunlight. Till this age, perforated pattern’s were only characteristic of the day but today, through modern technology, they can be reimagined differently.
The light glowing through Jali Pattern in the evening can become a unique characteristic to the form of the building.
