Kaling Phung I’m Kaling Phung and I’m currently an Undergrad student at the University iof Idaho, majoring in Architecture. My passion for architecture ignited with the idea of designing beautiful homes for my family as an upgrade, compared to the living space that we grew up in. Even after achieving that goal, I plan to spread that intention to the public as well.

Locatiing along the intersection of the Bill Chipman Palouse Trail and Paradise Creek, in between Pullman’s Toyota Dealership and Premix Inc, this structure’s program serves as a nature center where it’ll provide environmental education to the public and also serve as a rest stop. Due to the abundant amount of wind at the site, the building is insulated with hay, which is what the Palouse is known for as a part of their agriculture.

During quarantine, there are so many emotions that all of us have experienced such as anxiety, stress, constraint, etc. This area is considered as a beach house on the site, Kailua beach, in Oahu, Hawaii. The purpose of having the space near water is because the water has calming properties that can help the clients relieve those emotions. Science explains that being near the water generates a sense of awe, promote creative ideas to flow through the brain due to the brain waves slowing down in speed, and brings one to a calm and meditative state. There are openings that allows the clients to see the view of the ocean and the entire beach and allow light into the space.

Maze through the past

Using 5 models and merge them into one, the program of the building serves as a memorial and a museum using the theme of reminicence. From top-down leading to an underground maze consisting of a sequence of foregone memories. People are more likely to remember the negative experiences, causing multiple blockades to form and leading one circulating in different directions to becoming their future selves. Each representing an obstacle experienced in the past, leads developing what’s to come in the future. There will be some obstacles are more difficult than others. All are connected to the present, however, some are not able to have the opportunity

to be rearranged.
