DPS offers a walking escort and vehicle transportation service for students walking alone at night.

The University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa Department of Public Safety (DPS) purchased three new 2015 Dodge Charger vehicles last month.

“We have 12 vehicles currently in our fleet, and all of them are in working order ... We are also working on replacing some vehicles that are breaking down often and hard to maintain,” DPS community programs manager Sarah Rice said.

Each vehicle is installed with radios for communication. Approx-

imately $98,337 was invested in the purchase.

Since July 1, DPS has aimed to provide security services based on legislation that suggested the UH Cancer Center hire a private security. Since the UH Cancer Center in Kaka‘ako is considered a part of the Mānoa campus, it was suggested that DPS take over security at the facility.

At least one or two DPS vehicles are operated daily and patrol both the Mānoa campus and Cancer Center.

According to DPS, the department’s name change last year better reflected services offered, since there are multiple components within security, like emergency management and a community police unit.

Foreign visitors have made a home alongside University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa students – and they are not from another country.

A photo posted to Facebook on Oct. 19 by UH Mānoa student Chris Wehc showed a bed bug he discovered on the second floor lounge area of Campus Center. Originally unsure if the creature was a tick or bed bug, Wehc said he crushed the

bug with his finger and later found out from an internet search that the insect on his pants was indeed a bed bug.

“It freaked me out because the fact that bed bugs are … really tenacious so I couldn’t be taking that home at all because my mother is sick,” Wehc said. “So it was just really shocking for me that the couches had them because there’s no way I could have brought it from home...”

NOTHING NEW

Reports of bed bugs in Campus Center are not a first for UH Mānoa, as reports of the pests in Hamilton Library were also made in 2013. Associate University Librarian Ann Crawford, said the reports were made in October and November after staff members noticed bed bugs.

Still, if a student with a bed bug allergy were to be bitten by a bed bug, the effects could be dangerous.

“Some people can be bitten and they just get a little red spot,” Helen Spafford, associate professor of applied entomology, said in a phone interview. “Other people get bitten and they have huge welts and the more serious reaction would be an allergic reaction similar to what somebody who is allergic to bee stings might have.”

Adult bed bugs produce a “musty-sweetish odor,” according to the United States Environmental Protection Agency.

The University of Hawai‘i may see more sustainability issues being addressed thanks to the creation of two new councils.

One council is the Systemwide Sustainability Curriculum Council (SSCC), which is focused on sustainibility education education. The inaugral meeting will be held in December. The other, the Systemwide

Lynch said these councils serve as an advisory body to help the deci-

“Our office will be working with [the student] to report to the Student Caucus so that the student government body can determine a suitable student representative to serve on the councils,” Lynch said.

A SUSTAINABLE SYSTEM

Part of UH’s sustainability plans include the divestment of fossil fuels. Divestment is the practice of taking money out of something one has previously put money into.

Kalbert Young, UH chief financial officer, said the Board of Regents (BOR) decided to divest from fossil fuels to demonstrate UH’s support and commitment towards energy and resource sustainability strategies.

Young said the BOR began discussing this decision in February 2015 when the Graduate Student Organization (GSO) and campus faculty senate passed resolutions asking the BOR to divest in fossil fuels.

He said two task groups were created to align UH with sustainability.

Young said with this decision, the BOR is demonstrating that pro-sustainability policies will often have to be addressed on the financial side of UH operations.

“The [BOR] desires the University to be an example of how policy direction can encourage sustainable practices throughout organizations,” Young said in an email.

He said the process of making UH a more sustainable institution predates the divestment of fossil fuels, adding that UH West O‘ahu has been an energy efficient campus since its opening in 2012.

UH has also established policies requiring any new building needs to coincide with the energy efficiency standards set by the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED).

STUDENT AWARENESS

UH Mānoa freshmen Samantha Calumpit and Shay Chow said they did not know what sustainability was and were also unaware of the creation of any new sustainability council.

Chow said she thinks UH does not need another council because she does not see the point in making another council when awareness is already so low.

“I feel like maybe they’re wasting their resources, but at the same time it could eventually help in the long run for UH,” Calumpit said.

While the majority of students on campus can choose between a male or female restroom without hesitation, others, such as gender nonconforming students, can have more difficulty.

However, 10 single-stall bathrooms will be relabeled as gender-neutral by the end of the academic year, according to Steve Meder, interim associate vice chancellor for the University of Hawai‘ i at Mānoa Office of Planning and Facilities (OPF). The project comes with an estimated price tag of $2,000 - $3,000, which will be pulled from OPF’s annual budget.

“The pro about [gender-neutral bathrooms] is finding safe, dignified, clearly-designated areas so that there is more universal access and usability for all of our community,” Meder said in a phone interview.

He felt that the only cons to the project were practical challenges OPF faced such as identifying funds and locations for the gender-neu-

tral bathrooms.

Thanks to efforts by OPF, Graduate Student Organization (GSO) and the Associated Students of the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa (ASUH), gender-neutral bathrooms have gained more traction in the campus community. The most recent call for widespread change came after GSO Advocacy Chair BJ Avery was inspired by a Spring 2015 ASUH resolution that encouraged neutral bathroom signage. GSO’s resolution pushes for

A ‘WIN-WIN SITUATION’

While the original ASUH resolution mentioned 52 gender-neutral, single-stall bathrooms, Avery said that after looking into their locations, many were inaccessible or hard to find. Avery’s next step is to obtain a list of all the single-stall bathrooms on campus that are

additional bathrooms to be labeled as gender-neutral, beyond the 10 that UH Mānoa has already committed to.

“Nobody is opposed to having gender-neutral bathrooms, it’s a question of work, and who does the work,” Avery said. “I’m fairly confident at this point that if I had a

the transgender community, other groups would benefit from the change too.

“I’m hearing more and more from the students who are excited that this will be a win-win situation for everyone,” Miyamoto said. “The student parents will be able to have additional access for their kids and the people who have [Americans with Disabilities Act] compliance needs can also have assistance with gender-neutral, single-stall, locking restrooms … So in all of these areas, there’s additional means of having safety, comfort for everyone.”

Miyamoto also said it was important for UH Mānoa to keep with their policies of non-discrimination on the basis of gender and sexual orientation and noted that if a school were to refuse students access to campus facilities, it would become a Title IX issue.

Having worked with members of the campus LGBT community, Avery said many expressed a need for gender-neutral bathrooms and those who were uneasy with transgender individuals would benefit

from the change as well.

“If you have gender-neutral bathrooms, nobody’s uncomfortable,” Avery said. “It’s better for everyone.”

A LARGER-SCALE EFFORT

In addition to clearly identifying and communicating the location of gender-neutral bathrooms currently on campus, Meder said it was a goal that single-stall bathrooms built in the future are also gender-neutral.

At the same time OPF was pushing for gender-neutral bathrooms, Meder said the office has wanted to create lactation stations around campus for student parents and faculty members as the opportunity arises in new building projects.

The rooms would be separate from bathrooms, private, small, have a refrigerator and a place to sit.

“We’ve got women in different departments who close the door in the file cabinet room or something [to breastfeed],” Meder said. “We’re crazy short of space, but there’s a level of dignity and humanity that we should get in place.”

The universe is a beautifully destructive place – filled with massive supernovae and stars 1,200 times larger than our own sun. However, much of the universe is still undiscovered. To solve this problem we have the unimaginatively named Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT), a multi-national $1.4 billion project designed to provide us with views of the stars and galaxies at the very edge of the observable universe, according to the TMT’s website.

Unfortunately, the location where the TMT is being built, Maunakea, happens to be sacred Hawaiian ground, and protestors are failing to see the larger picture.

ASTRONOMY IS PRETTY RAD

In the days before Google Maps and compasses, humans had to rely on the stars to navigate the seas, and Polynesians were incredible at it. Without astronomy, Polynesians would have never sailed one of the world’s largest oceans. Fighting the construction of arguably the greatest astronomical structure of the 21st century thus far is ironic. If anything, we should be embracing it with open arms, as it would truly cement Hawai‘i as a forerunner of astronomical — in every sense of the word — breakthroughs.

SEPARATION OF SPIRITUALITY AND STATE

Religion and beliefs are important in any culture, however these concepts should never impede scientific progress. Maunakea is spiritual ground for the Hawaiian people.

However, stopping the construction of the TMT based solely on a religious factor is reminiscent to George W. Bush limiting the resources of stem cell research, which could cure diseases like diabetes, heart disease and Parkinson’s, based on his “deeply held beliefs,” according to a 2012 Time article.

If the TMT’s construction is stopped for spiritual reasons, we as a nation need to have a much larger dialogue on the division of religion and scientific advancement.

THE BIGGER ISSUE

Though the construction of the TMT is the hot button issue, it’s really just a small part of a larger argument – the continuous struggle of Hawaiian’s fighting for their sovereignty. Preventing the TMT from being built on Hawai‘ i’s most sacred ground would be a huge win for Native Hawaiians, who have been trying to take back their lands since the overthrow of Queen Lili‘uokalani. After a 13-day halt to construction called by Gov. David Ige, it was made clear that the protesters were being taken seriously. However, fighting the construction of something with such significant astronomical value simply to make a stand is uncalled for. If anything, protestors need to set their sights on actual problems affecting Hawai‘i’s economy.

The people behind the TMT are also looking to introduce astronomy to elementary, middle and high school students through its outreach program. Sandra Dawson, the community affairs manager for the TMT, has already started this venture with 13 school programs funded through the TMT’s partners.

Aside from benefitting future astronomers, the TMT is also expected to create 300 construction jobs and up to 140 permanent jobs on the island, according to the TMT’s website, providing a shining light for its dying construction industry. Dean Au, a field representative of the Hawaii Carpenter’s Union referred to the TMT in Hawaii Business Magazine as a “huge project for us,” stating that “Hilo is the poorest town in Hawai‘i. Our economy is in dire need of an uplift.”

Without astronomy research we wouldn’t have GPS, MRI scanning technology, and information about the universe we all live in. It’s cool to be mad at the TMT, but at least consider its positives, particularly the one where it could show us what the beginning of time looked like.

“Hānau ka mauna, he kēiki mauna nā kea.” Born was the mountain, a mountain son of Kea. This verse in the mele hanau, a genealogical chant in honor of Hawai‘i’s ancestors, provides an origin story of Maunakea. This chant is one of many that shows the importance of Maunakea to native culture. Maunakea isn’t just part of their belief, it’s a part of their history, which is why the Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT) shouldn’t be built atop the mountain.

WHY IS MAUNA KEA SACRED?

Many Native Hawaiians believe that the summit of Maunakea is home to some of the great divine deities in Native Hawaiian culture, according to SacredLands. com. Due to this, many ancient Hawaiians practiced religion and were buried there.

To address this, the Hawai‘ i State Historic Preservation Division was planning to cross-examine the entire summit to determine important burial sites and temples.

However, they were not able to do so. The creation of the TMT could pose a threat to some of these archeological sites.

Maunakea is important to Native Hawaiians and locals as the focus of many native chants and stories such as the Kumulipo, the Native Hawaiian origin story. Because of their connections to the mountain, the native people’s voices should be heard when they say they oppose the construction of this telescope.

WILL TELESCOPES BENEFIT LOCALS?

The TMT will be built on conservation lands. According to Hawai‘ i state conservation plans, conservation lands should be protected or used in order to benefit Native Hawaiians and locals living on the islands. However, this isn’t the case.

Maunakea now has more than five telescopes on its summit including the Gemini Telescope and the twin W.M. Keck Observatory telescopes, according to the

University of Hawai‘ i Institute for Astronomy. The Gemini Telescope is operated by seven countries, while the twin W.M. Keck telescopes are owned by the California Institute of Technology.

The telescopes already built on Maunakea don’t have much native influence as they are run by others who come from outside the state.

“Most observatory jobs do not go to Hawaiians,” said Sarah Ballard, University of Washington astronomer, to the Tech Insider. “Most jobs [at the telescopes] are outsourced to the universities and organizations that invest in the telescopes.”

Many locals recognize that the new telescope won’t be any different. How can these telescopes that have been built on Native Hawaiian sacred grounds benefit natives when these telescopes have nothing to do with them?

MOVING FORWARD

The TMT protesters have won a small triumph recently. According to the Star Tribune and other news outlets, on Nov. 17, the Hawai‘i Supreme Court decided to suspend construction of the 30 meter telescope until Dec. 2.

With the pause in construction, those protesting the telescope now have a better opportunity to have their voices heard regarding this project.

Kealoha Pisciotta, a Mauankea telescope protest organizer, told CBC News, “I think [the construction suspension is] a good sign. But [Ige] needs to understand however that we can’t just stand down.”

Although the TMT may advance space research, it should be built somewhere else, where ancient burial sites and native beliefs are not put in jeopardy. After all, how would you feel if what you believe in was threatened?

While the campus libraries are filled with staff and faculty that are passionate about helping students, library and book maintenance may not be getting the attention it deserves. Our school’s libraries are not the highest priority in terms of funding disbursement, but they should be.

MOLDY BOOKS

The lack of library upkeep was first noted by Ka Leo in 2004, when a staff writer cited that two-thirds of Sinclair Library books were growing mold. This cost the University of Hawai‘ i at Mānoa approximately $26,000 a year. Entire collections of journals were lost to the mold and now can only be accessed online.

This is a problem regarding the information intake students require.

According to the American Institute for Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works, keeping your books away from extreme temperature and humidity is vital to the book’s shelf life. The organic materials used to make books (like paper, cloth and leather) are sensitive to damp conditions, and if exposed to high humidity will encourage rapid mold growth. Even today, you can go to the second floor of Sinclair Library and feel those damp trade winds bringing in the Hawaiian humidity that has caused a constant problem for our books.

However, UH Library staff has made

a significant effort to improve their collection.

While the count of moldy books has decreased, it is still a problem UH Mānoa faces.

“I wish we had either the ability to get better environmental control in that building,” said Ann Crawford, associate librarian for planning, administration and personnel. “Or the ability to move those books somewhere that was better controlled.”

If UH libraries received more funding, it could make major progress toward addressing and fixing these mold problems.

HOW FUNDING WORKS IN UH LIBRARIES

According to Crawford, the library is given funding by the campus for staff, materials books and operations. However, maintenance and custodial work is funded centrally through the standard university funding applied to all buildings.

WHY LIBRARIES ARE CRUCIAL

According to a 2013 University of Minnesota study, the average GPA of first-year library users was higher then non-users. Since it is proven that these students are doing notably better in class, it is important for UH Mānoa to recognize that

“One of the things that’s good is the amount of custodial attention we get,” Crawford said.

It’s true, our libraries can be found clean throughout the duration of the week. However, Crawford mentioned that the electronic database and resources available for students could always improve.

“We’d love to have more [resources],” Crawford said. “We are always trying to respond to what the curricular needs are.”

There are many tips, diets and exercise routines to try when wanting to lost weight. Not everyone has a trainer or coach to help them keep on track with their preferred weight loss method. Try these apps, which provide free resources and encouragement for your journey

iPhone “Health”

IF YOU NEED A NUDGE

Many iPhone users have seen the “Health” app, but have never used it. It may seem like a waste of space, but it has useful resources for weight loss. These features include: a step tracker that uses your phone as a pedometer, a reproductive health section that tracks menstruation and a weight tracking option. “Health” is a low maintenance program that tracks your overall welfare. One feature that “Health” doesn’t include is a calorie counter. It does have a nutrition section, but it can become complicated if you don’t know the specific nutrients in your food.

“My Fitness Pal”

IF YOU NEED A PUSH

“My Fitness Pal” is similar to “Health” except with a bigger focus on diet. This app simplifies the process of calorie counting by offering a search bar where you can find meals and estimate how many calories you need to lose weight. There’s also a barcode scanner to log store-bought foods. “My Fitness Pal” encourages you when you log food. For instance, if you say you’re eating an orange, the app will have a message: “This food has lots of Vitamin C.” By utilizing positive reinforcement in the form of supportive dietary comments, “My Fitness Pal” really is a pal that is helping you to eat and be healthier.

“Lose it!”

IF YOU NEED A SHOVE

“Lose it!” is the inverse of “My Fitness Pal” in that it is exercise-based. Its most attractive feature is its exercise challenge section. Each challenge has a set of workouts like 30 crunches, 50 jumping jacks and a minute-long plank. Once you complete the challenge, the app will give you points for completing the exercises.

My favorite aspect about “Lose it!” challenges is its network of other app users. Users can join the challenge and comment on the main forum. Most of them post their point achievements. Sometimes you can even find encouraging messages on the main forum like “You got this!” The app also has the basic calorie counting system and weight and exercise tracker.

In the end, you know your body the best. These apps aren’t a guaranteed promise of weight loss; they are a guide. Find healthy foods, a workout and an app that works for you and lose weight at your own pace. Be patient and work hard for your wellbeing.

Sunny Days A breakfast, brunch and lunch café on Monsarrat Avenue STEPHANIE KIM STAFF WRITER

Sunny Days, a Japan-owned café, opened up a month ago on Monsarrat Avenue a few doors down from Bogart’s café. Sunny Days’ mission is to sell healthy meals and cold press juices from its Japan fruit company, Hanafru, but at a pretty hefty price.

The café has an open kitchen and bare concrete floors. The color scheme includes white, light blues and browns, giving it a beach vibe enhanced by local music playing overhead and a projector showcasing surfers and crashing waves.

Sunny Days is in a great location to attract tourists and beachgoers, but made me feel a bit overdressed in my jeans, covered shoes and blouse.

Although the café is open until 8 p.m., it is more suited for breakfast or lunch. The menu speaks of just that, with its brunch items, sandwiches and pancakes. Sunny Days focuses on healthy foods; you’ll find cold press juices, fresh fruit bowls, sandwiches and plate lunches – all with a vegan option. As good as that sounds, everything is overpriced. A cold press juice will cost you $12, and a sandwich costs up to $16. There are even pancakes that go up to $17.

We decided to order the shrimp sprout sandwich ($15) and the plate lunch of the day, the shrimp and soft shell plate ($14). Both dishes came out on a thick wooden board with the restaurant’s name engraved on the edge. It was a beautiful display of the food, which prompted a photo-op before digging in. Despite the presentation, the taste did not match up. The sandwich came wrapped in wax paper with the cafe’s custom sticker holding it together, alongside a bed of romaine and avocado salad.

The shrimp sandwich, which was bland, was served on whole wheat bread, included shrimp, eggs, mayo, paprika, and an array of colorful vegetables, like bell peppers and carrots. There was no hint of salt, pepper or even paprika, which was mentioned on the menu. It was disappointing.

The shrimp and soft shell plate, on the other hand, had too much flavor. The plate lunch is only served on Tuesdays and sits on a bed of salad with a side of rice and a cup of soup. The shrimp and soft shell crab were fried and must have been drenched in salt because it was way too salty to consume. We tried to combine both dishes to find a medium of flavor with no luck. We stopped eating halfway.

Everything about the café made me want to like it — from the nice décor to the picture-worthy display of their food — but the lunch items either lacked flavor or gave too much of it. I’ve heard good things about its breakfast items, but the prices might steer you away.

If you’ve ever been to a hotel, you probably don’t notice all the people that work together to make your experience enjoyable. Do you remember any of the hotel workers? The front desk concierge?

Do you remember a name or a face? For 21-year-old travel industry management major Allison Vining, the job isn’t about recognition, it’s all about the guests, tourists and patrons that come to enjoy our island paradise.

“No one really remembers the front desk clerk,” Vining said. “The intention is that people dream of coming here, and if they come here once in their life, they’re lucky. They should have a good time and enjoy. If you ruin it, if you don’t help them or don’t give suggestions, then they’re going to have a

terrible vacation. They should remember their trip, not the front desk agent.

I just want to give people their positive memories.”

Allison is originally from Rancho Cucamonga, a suburban city in Southern California. She has two cats, Spaz and Bear, and works two jobs, at Outback Steakhouse and the Holiday Surf Hotel.

After graduating, she’d like to travel.

“My goal in life is to see the world and experience different cultures,” she said. “I don’t want to be stuck in one place. I want to see how other people live their lives. You have this sense that there’s other stuff going on in the world.

I want to see all these different places and experience it first-hand, and get a new outlook on life. We’re so privileged

here that we can see these things and be sympathetic, but we can’t understand what it’s like. I love meeting new people because I feel like you can learn something from everyone.”

Though Allison would like to continue in hospitality, she wants to focus on environmental sustainability.

“I think it’s really important to preserve the places that people want to travel to,” Vining said. “Obviously everyone sees Diamond Head, Waikīkī, Pearl Harbor, but I guess what not everyone sees is the history and the culture behind those places. Locals see heritage sites. We don’t just see a beach, we see a place we love and respect. As long as you can protect what’s already here, people will continue to travel here and be content with what they chose to invest in.”

Vining’s jobs in customer service require patience and a lot of restraint.

The field is tough work, but Vining loves it.

“Focus on doing what you love,” she said. “If you do what you love, you’re always going to be happy. You’ll never feel like you’re working a day in your life.”

Formerly a starter for Nevada and replacement for the current San Francisco 49er Colin Kaepernick, Fajardo was mentored by Rolovich and recorded a Wolf Pack high of 9,000 passing yards and 3,000 rushing yards during his time under Rolovich’s leadership.

In the 2014 season alone, Rolovich led the Nevada offense by averaging 29.2 points a game and bringing their overall offense from eleventh in the conference to fourth. He was responsible for leading the Wolf Pack offense to tally a total of 2,671 rushing yards, averaging over 200 a game. In addition to rushing, Rolovich also helped Nevada rank second in the nation

Although Rolovich has been the leader for the Nevada offense, his ties to Hawai‘ i extend further back than just being a coach. A former junior college attendee at City College of San Francisco, Rolovich became a Warrior and started the majority of the 2001 season, as a quarterback under former head coach June Jones.

During his time as quarterback for UH, Rolovich led the team to an 8-1 start of the season, threw for over 3,361 yards and 34 touchdowns. In this year, Rolovich ranked 10th in the nation in passing efficiency, broke 19 UH passing records and eight total offense records.

Rolovich also participated in the 2002 Hula Bowl and was named “Most Valuable Player.”

Formerly an offensive coordinator for Hawai‘ i, Rolovich is ready to take on the Warriors.

The wait is finally over for University of Hawai‘i Rainbow Warrior football fans, as UH athletic director David Matlin announced the program’s newest head coach for the 2016 season: Nick Rolovich.

“Honestly, I don’t really know that much about him,” defensive lineman David Manoa said. “I’m just hoping that this new beginning will

be good for the program. I trust David Matlin … I just hope he made the right decision.”

Rolovich is currently the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for the University of Nevada, and has been for the past four years.

Prior to officially joining the Wolf Pack, Rolovich was also successful in his coaching career at UH alongside former head coach Greg McMackin.

During his tenure as the quarterbacks’ coach and offensive coor-

dinator for the Warriors, Rolovich’s offense threw for 13,915 yards, averaged 347.9 yards per game and completed 96 touchdowns.

In his 2010 season at the helm of the UH offense, Rolovich averaged 349.39 yards per game, led the nation in passing offense and finished sixth in the nation for total overall offense.

Revered for his ability to be successful on the gridiron, Rolovich then moved on to Nevada and was

in fourth quarter scoring.

This was due, in part, to Rolovich’s efficiency on the passing game with the help of the “Pistol” offense, previously installed by former Nevada coach Chris Ault in 2005. This tactic is what has led the Nevada offense to being one of the most successful in the Mountain West.

“I feel like it doesn’t really matter who’s coaching ... but at the end of the day we’re still the ones playing,” junior defensive back Damien Packer said. “We’re still the ones

“Everybody that I talked to has nothing but good things to say about him,” junior Paul Harris said. “You can’t really go off of word of mouth though, you have to go off of actions.

So we’ll see when he gets here.”

Rainbow Wahine return to glory RASHAWN WONG STAFF WRITER

As the season dwindles to its close, the University of Hawai‘i Rainbow Wahine volleyball team finds themselves in familiar territory atop the Big West Conference standings.

Up next for the Wahine: the NCAA tournament.

Coach Dave Shoji has led the ‘bows to three national titles in his tenure at UH, with his most recent in ‘87.

After 16-straight victories, the ‘Bows finished the regular season atop the Big West Conference with an unblemished record. Now that the regular season is over, the Wahine are hungry in their quest for a national championship.

“It’s not easy. People might think it’s easy, but no matter who the opponent is it’s a difficult thing to string that many games together,” coach Shoji said. “Our girls and staff did a really nice job preparing

every time out.”

The Wahine are no stranger to success in the regular season; this is the 15th time in program history they have finished with an undefeated record in conference play.

The highlight of the season for the Wahine thus far would be the defeat of then No. 2 Florida in a five-set comeback thriller. This marked Hawai‘i’s first win over a top-three opponent since beating No. 1 Texas to open the 2013 season. The win over Florida was also an unforgettable moment for Wahine star Nikki Taylor who had a career high 27 kills.

“The most memorable moment for me had to be defeating Florida because it was the first time I personally felt that I had my biggest impact on helping my team get the win,” outside hitter Nikki Taylor said. “However, I am looking forward to getting some good victories in the postseason.”

The ‘Bows closed out the regular season with victories in six-straight

road games, giving them a perfect record on the road – something they haven’t done since 2011.

“It was a matter of just trying to play one at a time; focus on one match and then come back and do film the next day and practice.

Then it’s the next opponent and we kept that routine,” Shoji said. “It was good that we had a day in-between each match. Sometimes you go back-to-back, and it’s really hard to prepare that way, but this set up really nice for us and the girls took care of business.”

After a demanding season, the Wahine will be allowed the opportunity to rest as they await the decision of where the opening rounds of the NCAA tournament will be held.

“We still have more stuff to accomplish,” Taylor said. “It’s a restweek … time to heal up and then on into the postseason.”

gle-elimination game. The players and coaches are hopeful, but not dependent on the chance they get a home game to open the tournament.

“There’s always that chance that they would see we’re a deserving team. We should be in the top-16, and that’s how you get to host,” Shoji said. “But a lot of it depends on other teams winning or losing.

It’s nothing we can count on but if they left us at home, that would be a really great thing.”

The Wahine will seek to avenge last year’s early round exit, in which they lost at the hands of the University of Washington Huskies.
