2025: Kala’s 20th Anniversary
HOW TIME FLIES!
In the spring of 2005, Leanne and I had just closed up the Hohner / HSS Santa Rosa, California warehouse. We had packed up 16 semi-trucks of gear and sent them down to the Los Angeles area. I had been encouraged over the last year by Rudi and Ilse DeGaspari to start my own ukulele company, given the rapid success of the Lanikai line that I had created for Hohner. The third uke wave had started a few years earlier.
Kala was born on July 4, 2005. I had the independence to run with the idea — and plenty of motivation — that it was possible to create high quality, reasonably priced ukes that folks could afford, play, and enjoy. It is also my belief that you can run a good business, serve people well and have a bit of fun at the same time.
The rest is history, as they say.
I want to thank some very wonderful people who have made Kala what it is today: my lovely wife Wendy; my kids Hannah and Benjamin; my friend and business partner Dave Cafiero; our indefatigable Sales Director Leanne McClellon; and the army of Kala employees — past and present.
A huge thanks to all of our great dealers who have supported us over the years, as well as several dear souls who have passed on: my Father Gene Upton, who instilled in me a love of music; Rudi DeGaspari, who initially suggested I start a business of my own; and Clay Nakasone from Goodguys Music in Hawaii, who was a huge encouragement early on.

The striking solid Koa top is paired with solid African Mahogany back and sides, an Ebony fingerboard and bridge, trimmed with Rosewood binding, with Paua Abalone shell rosette and purfling that frames the body, neck and headstock.

James Hill is a Kala artist and educator who discovered his passion for ukulele in a fourth-grade music class in Langley, British Columbia. He later became a key member of the Langley Ukulele Ensemble. As an innovative educator, he co-authored the Ukulele in the Classroom series and created Uketropolis.com while gaining international acclaim as a performer. His musical evolution from instrumentalist to award-winning singer-songwriter includes several acclaimed albums, including the JUNO-nominated The Old Silo.

Our Teak Tri-Top Ukulele delivers immense value at an affordable price point. Made primarily of teak—a tropical hardwood—the Tri-Top comes together with a triangular strip of mahogany that runs down the center, providing a red or orange contrast against the brown. All Solid Hawaiian Koa
In celebration of the 20-year history of Kala, and the even greater history of the Ukulele, we are proud to present the Pan Pacific ukulele. The ethos of this special model harkens back to the ukulele’s earliest roots in Madeira, Portugal.
The centerpiece of this instrument lies in the traditional “figure 8” soprano body style, wholly unique in the Kala catalog. This modern classic features all solid Hawaiian Koa construction and a timeless rope-style rosette of maple and rosewood. The Deluxe model also features mahogany binding with the same maple and rosewood rosette and purfling. The conversation piece headstock crest features an homage to Petaluma’s history as the home of the World Wrist-Wrestling Championship.
Originally called the Machête (pronounced “ma-SHEH-teh”), this small but captivating instrument found its way from the tropical Madeira down to the Hawaiian islands with migrant workers around the 1870’s. Portuguese woodworkers Manuel Nunes, Augusto Dias, and Jose do Espirito Santo were three of these workers, and in addition to their craft of furniture making, all became self-taught luthiers, and began producing instruments that slowly evolved into the ukulele.
One of the earliest promoters of the ukulele in Hawaii was none other than King Kalakaua, the last king of Hawaii. With the support of this beloved “Merrie Monarch”, the next generation of ukulele makers began. Jonah Kumalae, one of these ukulele makers, was the one to introduce the ukulele to the mainland at San Francisco’s 1915 Pan Pacific International Exposition, not an hour away from Kala’s hometown of Petaluma.
The Kala Pan Pacific Ukulele was conceived to honor and celebrate the centuries-old history and tradition of the ukulele, the luthiers who pioneered the instrument, and the spot where Hawaii’s gift to the mainland began its spread.

James “Hutch” Hutchinson began working with Latin and funk bands in California shortly after graduating high school. After meeting guitarist John Cipollina, he started recording with him at Grateful Dead drummer Mickey Hart’s ranch. He later joined the Neville Brothers Band in
Austin, TX. In 1982, Hutch met Bonnie Raitt, with whom he has recorded and performed for the past four decades. After moving again to Los Angeles, he became a session musician, working for producer Don Was, among others, and recording with artists like Ringo Starr, Willie Nelson, Randy Newman, The Doobie Brothers, and B.B. King, just to name a few. He continues to tour the world with Bonnie Raitt.
