ROBSON SQUARE Reactivating the Cultural Heart of Downtown, Vancouver, BC Robson Square as it is lacks visual cues to encourage pedestrians to stay, this is exacerbated by the site elements that cause complications and confusion in understanding circulation through the site. Physical limitations in accessibility is also problematic for a site that is intended to be the cultural heart of the city.

Retrofitted lobby space, to allow visual connection at the street level

Vancouver Art Gallery intends to relocate and with this inhabitant change, the project becomes an endeavour to reprogram the space through porous cultural programming.

A PUBLIC HALLWAY UBC Student Union Building Retrofit, Vancouver, BC Over the last decade the University of British Columbia has looked to both expanding and retrofitting existing buildings on campus to better serve its students and faculty. The Student Union Building (SUB) is being expanded to accommodate a growing population of students with more amenities and services, yet the existing modern building is left untouched.

The scope of the project is a subterranean hallway that is proposed to connect the existing building to the newer facility. At this pedestrian scale, an exploration of the range of ‘public-ness’ is undertaken in a single material assignment: plywood.

In the investigation of the range of public to private spaces within a predominantly student populated campus, the design reflects the need for spaces that differ in its privacy. For instance, the entire length of the hallway begins to look at how spaces on campus are used for meeting up with others, niches for the individual and all the different spaces in between the two.

The idea of personal and public privacy in conjunction with visibility is questioned in this project.

NOW AND/OR FOREVER Capilano View Cemetery, West Vancouver, BC comprehensive studio: collaborative project with Yang Song

The challenge in this project is to orchestrate spatial, programmatic, structural, material and sensorial set of relationships.

Tasked with the identification of ‘what is to be understood’ engenders a methodology of design and questioning of how these processes eventually translate into actual experiences within a set of spaces.

Death is a part of our cycle of life and where the dead are laid to reset is a place of mourning for the living. Through the design of the procession through the site, gradual serenity and healing is sought. The presence of an axial water element is meant to guide the mourner through the site: the entryway served by the administration, flanked by two funeral halls for the masses, leading into the main mausoleum meant for private mourning and a pathway that leading to a pavilion holding a collective ossuary.

Water is an element that has inherent healing properties that have been integrated into the project many aspects. From the pragmatic water collection systems above and below ground, to the spiritual cleansing and watering of the landscape, the cyclic flow of water and alludes to the themes of life and death.

MOCC An Experience of Temperate Seasonality, Vancouver, BC an abridged version: thesis project, April 2015: under the supervision of Joseph Dahmen, Raymond Cole and Melissa Higgs Seasonality was once a habitual part of how we inhabit and occupy spaces. And in a society where we increasingly spend our lives indoors, the acceptance of mechanically controlled interiors has eroded our understanding of, and inherent connection with our immediate climate.

How do we begin to reintroduce ourselves to the seasons again?

Rather than highlight the characteristics of indoors versus the outdoors, can the transition between indoor and outdoor be reimagined as active and habitable spaces?

Continued reliance on controlled indoor environments mutes beneficial elements essential to maintaining wellbeing.

Opportunities to encounter natural phenomena should be integral with human activities in an effort to foster a sense of place and connection with the surrounding context.

A healthy environment should be accessible, welcoming, and stimulating.
