One large Step for Art, Another step for Artíst

In the age of digital art when everyone has a cellphone with them, it becomes more important for artists to have a way to work on their phones. This has resulted in the emergence of many mobile applications for drawing. But what about when you can work on a computer? The best solution is an app that works on both. On June 16, 2015 one such app was released. MediBang Paint!, an app created by MediBang inc., is free to use with some additional things available to buy. The most recent update was made on September 24, 2020. And is currently on version 19.6.

This app is comparable to Adobe Illustrator and their mobile app Adobe draw. But you do not have to pay for it. So, it is great for students trying to make a little money from commissions. This app allows you to create multiple layers in the same artwork and change to opacity of the layers. There are other differences between this app and Adobe. This app allows you to manipulate your workspace more. You can turn it to make it easier to draw lines.

MediBang Paint! is designed for creating comics. It contains premade features to split the artboard into sections like a comic book page. It also contains premade backgrounds for artists to use. It also contains fonts typically used in professional comic books.

There are over 100 brushes to use for free. Some of them are the normal brushes seen in digital art platforms like the pen and pencil. Others are more to allude to styles used on paper like watercolors and the airbrush. Other brushes are more fun like the sparkle brush and the rotation symmetry pen. All of the brushes can be edited. Some brushes, like the rotation symmetry pen, have special brush properties that can be edited. The rotation symmetry pen’s most obvious use is to make mandalas. It creates sym-

metrical lines radiating from a center point. This brush’s special property is the number of lines it will create.

The app also includes over 20 different color pallets as well as slides to alter the colors. There are three slides to be exact. One changes the shade of the color, the second changes the tint of the color, and the third slide lets you change your hue. You can alter the pixel size of your brush from one pixel up to 300 pixels. The opacity of the bush stroke can also be altered. It ranges from 0% to 100%.

MediBang Paint! allows you to import photos to use as a photo reference. It lets you change the opacity of the layer your photo is on to make it easier to trace. This can be done with any layer, not just ones with a photo reference on them. You can also lock a layer from being edited, and you can add filters and blending options to layers to change how they interact with each other. It is important that they are in the order you want, or your filters will not look right. If the layers are not in the right order you can move them around. As long as you have more than one layer you can delete layers. The only catch is that you must have at least one layer.

I highly recommend trying this app. Whether you are a seasoned artist or just starting out, this app is great to use. I will say that you must be a little patient with this app. Like any phone application, some of the updates can have bugs.
