BRIEF: The client is looking for a new and inspiring design for studely boathouse in the manner of a great master.

The adoption of the circular form for the hall calls attention from all visitors. The whole building supported by reinforced concrete columns (pilotis), hence any irregular form can be positioned in the center of the building. The unique design emphasized the importance of the function inside the building.

The brise soleil was designed in a specific angle to block off the view from the front. However, there is nothing opaque. It shows no sign of life from the outside, but there are sufficiently large voids running through several levels inside. Those voids produce the whole its impalpable celestial quality.

The whole building designed around internal circulation. Following Le Corbusier's idea of 'architectural promenade.' The circulation inside the building separated different zones and extended the journey, which makes visitors thoroughly enjoy all facilities and river views. While visitors are moving inside the building, they would have a different view after turning a corner.

The effect of the wall's color can speed up or slow down the flow and also bring a different sentiment to visitors.

BRISE-SOLEIL (3 TYPES)

BRIDGE TO THE KIOSK

The brise-soleil on the east side set to 30 degrees. It will block the sight from all visitors who walk from the car park. Hence visitors may think this building as a dull opaque cubic building. However, when they walk into the porch, they will be shocked by the dynamic internal space.

In the summer, all the direct sunlight will be blocked off. However, warm winter sunlight will be able to reach the depth of the building.

The long horizontal span brise-soleil applied to the north facade. It remains the uninterrupted river view.

The normal brise-soleil on the south side designed for ventilation for the boat storage area to avoid the humid environment.

BRIEF: Design a 24/7 bike shelter with multiple functions with cable-net fabric formwork system. It has to incorporate ideas with the design proposal of the New Student Precinct of Melbourne university.

The traditional design for schools has worked against the coming pedagogy.

Thus the design of the learning environment needs to be innovative in order to fit the future pedagogy. However, whatever the pedagogy changes, the school’s value will not get changed at all. Hence, fuze the new pedagogy and traditional school values together in order to form a new educational building is critical. The most common building material used in UHS is red brick. Red bricks can accurately represent its school value and history.

Narrative: Schools are meeting the real revolution in pedagogy. The traditional teacher-focused instruction is shifting to a more personalized /student-centered approach. The learning space is changing with flexible layouts, collaborative spaces, and integrated technology. Architects need to design the physical space what meets the future innovative pedagogy.

Therefore red brick will dominate the new design in order not to lose the consistency of the whole campus. However, combining the new construction materials which represent the future and the traditional red bricks together is the concept of the design.

New pedagogy emphasized that all students will be encouraged to be active absorbers of knowledge. Therefore more informal study space will help them to do self-learning. There are 12 informal study space designed, and a couple of roof gardens help VCE students to relief their pressure of coming exams.

Fluent movement of the campus is critical.

New access points will shorten the distance from the public transport to school buildings.
