s someone who is open to new experiences and going on unique and out-of-this-world adventures, getting news about moving to Okinawa sent me to new heights of excitement.

I consider myself lucky to have been given the opportunity to live in a different country, but the mere fact that we get to live in this beautiful tropical paradise is the cherry on top. Recommendations on food and places to visit were offered left and right making my Google maps filled with blue marker icons of restaurants and activities to do. However, being in an unfamiliar place still left us clueless on where to start exploring – until I came across the Outdoor Recreation Team. As the gentle breeze (not quite cold) starts to fill the island this November, and as you begin planning outdoor adventures, keep ODR on your radar for guaranteed unique experiences led by their amazing local tour guides.

It’s no secret that driving around Okinawa exposes you to different sceneries such as their temples, the crystal-clear blue and green ocean, and lush greenery surrounding the city. Views like these make you want to slow down, take snapshots, and appreciate its beauty; however, one can only access so much when driving. With the sweater weather slowly sneaking upon us and less tourists visiting, cycling is the perfect start to your outdoor adventures. So, make your way to ODR and sign up for their weekly trips.

You’re also able to rent different types of bicycles for a variety of trails. Whether you’re in the mood for an easy or challenging trip, ODR can accommodate your needs and help you find this island’s hidden gems.

Naoki Uchida, ODR’s local tour guide of 13 years, loves all kinds of sports and activities; however, he turned to cycling when he realized running wasn’t his strength. Cycling is one sport where, according to him, you can control your speed, access roads not many people take, and get a chance to enjoy the views of the island from a different angle. All this while also getting a good workout.

“It’s a perfect mix of discovering what Okinawa has to offer and staying healthy at the same time.” What’s more fun than staying healthy while experiencing the magical views of the island?

What makes Okinawa unique to cyclists is its “hills for the competitive racers, flats for the casual cyclists, and sceneries like no other place that I have cycled before,” said Delroy Wade, a cyclist.

Wade has been cycling since 2015 and has explored countless places, but the friendly faces of Okinawans have been one of the highlights of his rides here. “[When] I did a perimeter ride around the island, not once was I not greeted with a smile or the occasional friendly nod.” Wade also has nothing but positive admiration toward ODR and its expert staff as they guide him on trips and provide the best experience possible. He added that cycling with others, beginners or experienced, makes it more fun and helps everybody stay safe.

Whether you are a first-timer or an experienced cyclist, ODR has it all! They offer cycling trips with different levels of

difficulty that will surely fit your preference.

Naoki and his team will bring the fun while being safe as they are all equipped with safety certifications. If you’re looking for a more challenging and exciting experience, Naoki, always hungry for adventure, leads cyclists on one insane trip each month.

These trips consist of long-distance trips, narrow trails, or what they call “sea to summit” trips. Sea to summit trips are held from November to April at the Jawbone Ridge, where you cycle and hike your way up and down the hills. You kick off your

Deployment / Remote Assignment Child Care Support allows families 16 hours for pre-deployment, 16 hours each month of deployment / remote assignment, and 16 hours post deployment. AF FCC Deployment Child Care Support may be used once the member has orders and ends 60 days upon return from deployment. AF FCC Remote Assignment Child Care may be used each month the member is on remote assignment.

Permanent Change of Station

PCS program provides care to eligible active duty military families PCSing in or out of Kadena AB. The family will receive up to 20 hours of child care (for each child) when they are within 60 days of your PCS departure or arrival date.
