Celebrating Mental Health Awareness, Community, and Motherhood

Haitai, May! This month is exceptionally special to me as it marks one year of my journey in Okinawa, and three wonderful years in Japan overall. Looking back on these transformative years, I’m filled with nostalgia, recalling the challenges I’ve faced and the countless blessings I’ve uncovered along the way.

As we shift from the vibrant hues of spring into the warmth of summer and the start of our rainy season, I’m excited to present this special edition dedicated to raising awareness about mental health, celebrating community, and honoring our mothers!

In recognition of Mental Health Awareness, we emphasize the importance of well-being through features focused on the healing power of nature, community, and self-care. This month’s Oki Cultural Corner takes us to Okinawa’s Ogimi Village in the Yanbaru Forest, known as a village of longevity. I invite you to turn to page 22 to discover more about this vibrant community and their secret to healthy living.

May also marks the arrival of Golden Week in Japan, a celebration of Showa, Constitution Day, Greenery Day, and Children’s Day all in one week! Many Japanese take time off during this holiday, and some companies are closed completely. This opportunity offers individuals and families dedicated time for rejuvenation, adventure, and family gatherings.

Or journey out on an adventure to Okuma Beach for a weekend of fun family activities and a decadent Mother’s Day buffet at Surfside Grill & Bar.

Whether it’s exploring the island’s beautiful outdoors or enjoying the countless FSS events happening throughout the month, there is a contagious energy in the air that encourages us to gather, celebrate, and foster connections.

I invite you to take the time to reflect, recharge, and connect with the world around you – we have so much to be grateful for. As always, thank you, for your support and enthusiasm as we bring you the essence of lifestyle in your beloved island homes!

Ogimi Village O ers a Lesson in Longevity

Photos by Att Eachus & Marina

When Americans think about Okinawa, longevity often comes to mind. Distinguished as a “blue zone” by author Dan Buettner in 2008, Okinawa’s culture has become synonymous with wellness. Ogimi Village teaches this lesson quite unlike anywhere else on the island. A rural community situated within the Yanbaru Forest; this area epitomizes healthy living.

The people of Ogimi are proud of the village’s reputation for long life. When visiting, you’ll notice a stone plaque dedicated to longevity. Inscribed in Japanese, one line roughly translates to, “At the age of 80, I’m still a child.”

For the villagers, it’s no secret why this area has such high aging rates. Nutritious diets, strong social connections, and rich culture contribute to Ogimi’s quality of life.

First, the food. Anyone who’s spent time in Okinawa knows how easy it is to nd food that not only tastes good but is good for your body as well. When exploring Ogimi, refuel with a traditional option like kaisen donburi. The dish, which is fresh seafood over rice, will make you feel satiated and energized.

In addition to the food, Ogimi Village is renowned for its proximity to many cultural hotspots. Seven Falls waterfall is a spiritual power spot and provides a space for locals to worship. A short hike through the forest, followed by the serene sound of falling water will leave your mind feeling refreshed and renewed.

The natural world is integral to life in Ogimi. The village’s process of basho-fu relies on the ber of indigenous itobasho banana plants to use for clothing. Colloquially known as “banana ber weaving,” fabric made from this technique is famously light and soft. The texture of basho-fu cloth is so smooth, it’s seen as something of a luxury in Japan.

In the spring, elds of iris owers sprout to life, painting the natural landscape with dots of purple. The vibrant display usually starts in late March and lasts until mid-April. These owers are a welcome sight each year, as locals and visitors alike enjoy their tranquility.

For those of us fortunate enough to call Okinawa home, even temporarily, we bene t greatly from learning about the invigorating lifestyles of those in our host nation. The lesson of Ogimi Village is not complex. It simply reminds us to get back to the basics. If we want to live healthier, happier, more ful lling lives, let's commit to genuine social connectivity, clean eating, and sustainable living.

Check out our OKINAWA JOB BOARD here!

If you haven’t noticed all the delectable pink and red ichigo treats at the “konbini” (Japanese convenience stores), strawberry season has been lling our hearts with bliss for the past few months. There are only a few weeks left to indulge at the all-you-can-eat strawberry farms! @thesashatravels recommends her favorite variety, koiminori, which is said to be lightly scented with peach and have a mysterious taste.

The rst adventure I took when I arrived in this little slice of paradise was up north to the Tropical Dream Center. Though it’s been a few years, I still remember how completely magical and captivated I was by the beautiful array of subtropical owers, fruit trees, and orchids. This was my rst taste of Okinawa’s foliage in all its glory, and that day I realized this island is truly special. @allredabroad captured her experience of embracing the beauty of the Tropical Dream Center, and it goes without saying that this may be the dreamiest spot in Okinawa.

No rain, no owers.

As we enter the rainy season in Okinawa, here are a few visual reminders that without the rain, we wouldn’t be surrounded by all this beauty!

@brit_wanderlust_ t_life reminds us that beauty awaits at every corner. Sometimes, a simple stroll down the backroads of Okinawa can reveal an abundance of oral beauty. Whether you’re walking through quiet, tucked-away paths or wandering along the coastline, Okinawa’s landscapes never fail to impress. It’s a reminder that sometimes the best way to discover a place is by slowing down and letting nature take the lead.

@not.all.who.wander.are.lost1 enjoyed this peaceful oasis hidden among the city streets of Naha. Designed with the help of Fuzhou workers, the garden re ects authentic Chinese landscaping. Highlights include the Lingbo Corridor with views of China’s Min River, the Pavilion of Spring symbolizing well-rounded character, and the Pine and Bamboo Pavilion evoking Fuzhou’s summer atmosphere. Visitors can also admire the twin granite pagodas and experience the tranquil San You Zhai study, surrounded by pines and plum trees.
