When regular animals come in, it is awesome when they remember who you are. The dogs will get really excited and surprise the owners! Written By • Elizabeth Bryan Photo by • Att Eachus No matter where your travels take you during your time in Okinawa, it is important to leave your furry family members in the care of a professional! The staff at Karing Kennels are diligent, caring, and skilled at their jobs. I recently had the opportunity to speak with Samantha Posey, the Lead Animal Caretaker for Karing Kennels, to learn more about what goes on behind the scenes with your pets while you travel. Daily duties of the Karing Kennels’ caretakers include kennel and cat condo deep cleans, medication administration, food distribution, and lots of love and play throughout the day. Samantha’s favorite aspect of her job is interacting with the animals. She said, “When regular animals come in, it is awesome when they remember who you are. The dogs will get really excited and surprise the owners.” Samantha enjoys the deep bond that forms with the pets who have to stay at Karing Kennels for an extended period of time for a quarantine or long TDY. The love the employees have for the animals under their care is clear to anyone who watches their interactions. The staff is also aware of the responsibility they have to our beloved fluffy family members, and they work hard to take excellent care of each of their boarded animals. With the potential for over 70 dogs in residence at a time, it can be no small task to give every animal the attention they need and the Karing Kennels staff rises to the occasion. 14 FOR ADDITIONAL PROGRAMMING PLEASE VISIT KADENAFSS.COM

Samantha recently took over the Karing Kennels Instagram page (@karingkennelsboardingbuddies) and enjoys the opportunity to share how happy their resident animals are with the owners. The Karing Kennels boarding facility truly has the best interests of your animals at heart, and you can rest easy with the knowledge the caretakers give the best care possible to every furry friend to cross the threshold. Keep an eye out for the Karing Kennels renovations for even better boarding options in the future!

SHOGUN DEFENDERS’ SCHOLARSHIP AWARD WINNER!

When you think of a Defender...

When you think of a Defender, do you visualize an Airman at the gate with a beret, a badge and a gun? To the untrained eye, this is what a Defender may be described as, but for me and many alike, it’s much more complex than what can be seen on the outside. Being a Defender is more than a job, or a career field. Digging deeper, it’s more than a culture and even more than a way of life. Being a Defender is a having a sense of purpose and if you dig deep enough, it will teach you unforgettable lessons along the way. Being a Defender is standing the watch, side by side with someone you may have just met, but would be willing to die for. No matter the race, color or creed, you watch their six and they watch yours. Each day, we stand the watch for hours, waiting for the minute when seconds are of the essence. Being a Defender is preserving our past, present and future. We enforce the laws that keep our communities safe and secure the assets that defend our freedom. We never forget the fallen and we honor those who came before us. We uphold military traditions of the past and innovate new ideas towards the future. Being a Defender is thriving under pressure. We move towards the fire when others run away, and when we do move, we are calm, collected and two steps ahead. We make command, and sometimes split-second decisions when others can't. Throw us in the fire and we feed off the friction. Being a Defender is a life of leading. We lead early in our path. We transform groups of people, from different walks of life, into unified teams moving in the same direction. We hold each other accountable and pick one another up when one of us falls down. Being a Defender is a life of serving. It’s knowing that what you do is for the safety and well being of those you are ultimately responsible for. It's putting your life on the line for others without even thinking about it. We protect valuable resources, but we serve invaluable people. All of us have our own definition of what it means to be a Defender. We've all had different experiences throughout our own individual journeys. No matter what roads you've traveled on, there's one thing that will always stay the course: being a Defender is a being a part of something greater than one's self. A DAY IN THE LIFE OF... Emergency Medical Services

Written By • Elizabeth Bryan | Photos by • Att Eachus

Members of the 18th Emergency Medical Services team are the first responders to any medical emergency that occurs on or around Kadena Air Base within a 102 km area. This includes SOFA members, retirees, or dependents who reside off base. Their work ethic was obvious after only a brief conversation with them. These brave men and women who respond so promptly in a medical emergency are truly some of Kadena’s hardest workers. Their responsibility towards the health and safety of Kadena’s residents requires vigorous and regular training to make sure they can handle any situation they encounter while working multiple 24 hour shifts each week. We spoke to TSgt Blask and SrA Mclaughlin about their daily duties as part of EMS. They regularly train and respond to emergency calls for a variety of scenarios that happen on base, off base, or on the flightline during inflight and ground emergencies. TSgt Blask, the NCOIC of ambulance services, stated his favorite part of his job was the “unpredictability, no day is the same. EMS gets a variety of

42 FOR ADDITIONAL PROGRAMMING PLEASE VISIT KADENAFSS.COM

calls. Anything from sprained ankles to cardiac arrest calls.” Their training prepares them to respond to anything they might have to handle, and TSgt Blask emphasized they use their skills every single day. As nationally registered EMTs they work to be prepared for every possible scenario. To support this goal the EMS crew regularly trains in-house and at Camp Foster’s United States Naval Hospital. They constantly train, practice, and complete EMT refresher courses to stay prepared for the unpredictable nature of their duties. As part of the medical group they are also sometimes called upon to help in the clinic for immunizations or deployment lines. TSgt Blask and SrA Mclaughlin wanted everyone to know they are part of the only ambulance service available on Kadena. As a result, if there is a need for multiple responders they need to call ambulances from other bases to assist. Many times, there are resources available outside of an ambulance for a minor injury. They suggest applying Self Aid Buddy Care in a non-emergency situation and reaching out to the nurse advice line. The rule of thumb to follow

We joke around and have fun at times but when it is time to get down to business - we get down to business. when deciding if it is necessary to call 911 is “life, limb, or eyesight.” If there is an amputation, cardiac arrest or stroke symptoms, or something is happening to the patient’s eyesight, definitely call 911. If you are unsure whether an ambulance is needed you can be connected to the nurse advice line by calling the Kadena Clinic (at DSN: 630-4817 or JP: 098-9604817) and pressing three. The men and women of EMS put in long hours all of the time. TSgt Blask remarked, “24/7, 365, we don’t stop, not even during typhoons!” Their shifts are 24 hours long and as a result they form a close bond with one another. SrA Mclaughlin enjoys working with Fire Protection and Security Forces as they work together to respond to the varied emergencies on and around Kadena Air Base. TSgt Blask stated, “Since we live here together for 24 hours at a time we get to know each other very well. We joke around and have fun at times but when it is time to get down to business - we get down to business.”

FOR OPEN POSITIONS, PLEASE VISIT NAFJOBS.ORG AND USAJOBS.GOV

TSgt Blask and SrA Mclaughlin wanted to offer shout outs to their leadership and to those who are there to support EMS. They wanted to thank the people who them train, the bystanders on scene who give them the information they need to do their jobs, and the friends and family members who bring food or spend time with them during their long shifts. The Medical group is prepping for an inspection, and TSgt Blask is proud of the team’s accomplishments to ensure everything runs smoothly. The hard workers of EMS are a critical part of the effort to keep those attached to Kadena Air Base safe, happy, and healthy. It is clear they take this duty seriously. If you are ever in a medical emergency, you can rest easy knowing your safety is in good hands.
