Valentine’s Day is almost here, and the pressure to come up with the perfect date can make anyone’s heart race. Don’t sweat it — the 18th Force Support Squadron has a lineup of fun, irty and unforgettable activities to help couples, friends and families celebrate love, laughter and maybe a little friendly competition too.

Couples wanting a classic, intimate Valentine’s evening can enjoy dinner by the sea at Seaside Restaurant, located at the Kadena Marina, or Surfside Grill & Bar at Okuma Beach, where panoramic ocean views and the gentle sound of waves create a naturally romantic setting. Another timeless option is a Valentine’s Day dinner at the Rocker Club, o ering a warm, inviting atmosphere perfect for an elegant night out together.

For a unique experience, the Kadena Marina is hosting a Couple’s Sunset Cruise and Drinks on Friday, Feb. 13. Guests will enjoy drinks and golden-hued sunset views while celebrating an incredible evening on the water.

Golf-loving couples can putt their love to the test during Swing & Swirl at Banyan Tree Golf Course on Saturday, Feb. 14. Participants will enjoy friendly competition on the greens while sampling wine. A Mini Swing & Swirl will also be held Saturday, Feb. 28, at Chibana Golf Course, giving couples another chance to tee up a memorable date on the fairway.

Looking for something a little more laid-back? Head to Chili’s for its Hearts on Fire margarita of the month paired with a avorful Cilantro Shrimp Pasta special — because pasta and margaritas are always a winning combo. For another fun twist on date night, hit the bowling lanes, where friendly competition, laughs and a few strikes make for an easygoing and memorable outing for couples or groups.

Shoppers can also score the perfect Valentine’s surprise at the Risner Pro Shop, which is o ering 10% o everything in the store, plus an additional 10% o sale items — ideal for nding a fresh gym t for that special “swolemate.” A new look paired with a lifting date makes for a Valentine’s celebration that’s equal parts fun and tness.

For a more personal touch, guests can create balloon arrangements or craft handmade cards through Arts and Crafts, adding a thoughtful, creative air to Valentine’s Day gifts. Arts and Crafts is also the go-to spot for showing o your crafty side, o ering a variety of classes that let you and your special someone enjoy meaningful, hands-on quality time together.

The celebration doesn’t stop with couples. Teens are invited to the Cupid’s Candy Land Party at the Teen Center on Friday, Feb. 13. The event will feature games, candy and festive activities as the Teen Center embraces the holiday of hearts.

With dining, cruises, golf, shopping and familyfriendly events, the 18 Force Support Squadron o ers something for everyone looking to make this season of love memorable.

BELOW THE SURFACE

There is something inherently mysterious about stepping into a cave. These underground spaces hold layers of history and storytelling while revealing some of Okinawa’s most hidden geological beauty. If you have never explored the island’s caves, winter is an ideal time to start. Tourist crowds thin out, temperatures cool, and popular sites become more enjoyable. This month, we explored three very di erent caves, each o ering a distinct experience, whether you are traveling solo, planning a date, visiting with friends or bringing the whole family.

THE BLUE CAVE

The Blue Cave is one of Okinawa’s most iconic natural landmarks and an ideal o -season destination for water lovers who prefer fewer crowds. Located o Cape Maeda in Onna Village, the cave is accessible by boat or shore entry and attracts snorkelers and divers from around the world. It is best known for the vivid blue glow that lls the cave when sunlight re ects o the white limestone seabed below.

Those entering from shore descend a series of steps where waves splash against the rocks before swimming north along coral reefs teeming with tropical sh. As the massive cli s close in, the cave opening gradually appears.

Winter visits, while requiring wetsuits, o er a quieter and more intimate experience than the busy summer months. Swimming to the back of the cave and turning toward the entrance reveals the signature blue light that gives the cave its name. The experience is brief but visually striking and well worth the e ort. Visitors should bring a light for additional exploration and always check sea conditions before entering the water.

GYOKUSENDO CAVE (OKINAWA WORLD CAVE)

Gyokusendo Cave, located within Okinawa World, is one of Japan’s largest limestone caves and the park’s main attraction. Stretching several miles, the cave features a designated walking route that winds past towering stalactites, stalagmites and underground streams formed over hundreds of thousands of years. It o ers a rare glimpse into Okinawa’s deep geological past.

The cave also carries historical signi cance. During the Battle of Okinawa in 1945, Gyokusendo served as a shelter and eld hospital for Japanese forces and civilians, adding a sobering layer to the experience. Inside, carefully placed lighting highlights the scale and detail of the formations without overpowering the natural atmosphere.

Access is easy thanks to manmade stairs and ramps, though the cave is deceptively large, making comfortable footwear essential. Okinawa World itself can ll an entire day, with cultural exhibits, dining options, shopping and even a local brewery. It is a well-rounded destination suitable for visitors of all ages.

GANGALA VALLEY

Gangala Valley o ers a slower, more re ective way to experience Okinawa’s natural and human history. This guided nature park showcases limestone caves, dense subtropical forest and important archaeological sites tied to the island’s earliest inhabitants. Unlike Okinawa’s beach resorts, Gangala Valley encourages visitors to slow down and observe. Before tours begin, guests gather at the Cave Cafe, a tranquil space set inside a limestone cavern that serves as a gentle transition into the surrounding environment. Co ee and light refreshments are available, and visitors are encouraged to take their time before the guided walk.

Tours are conducted in Japanese, but English audio and visual materials are available. Limited group sizes help protect the fragile ecosystem while deepening understanding of the area’s signi cance. Highlights include ancient rock shelters, massive banyan trees and fossil discoveries. The experience is structured and educational, placing emphasis on conservation and historical context rather than spectacle.

Okinawa’s caves reveal a quieter, more contemplative side of the island: one best explored when the crowds fade and the island’s natural beauty takes center stage.

As always, visitors should check opening hours and sea conditions before heading out. For those looking to enjoy these experiences with minimal planning, discounted Okinawa World tickets are available through ITT. Diving rentals for the Blue Cave are o ered at Kadena Marina and guided snorkel tours depart through Outdoor Recreation.
