VENTURE | April 2025
EDITOR’S LETTER
BOBBIE BROCK
Marketing Director 18th Force Support Squadron
Aloha!
Spring is here, and April is often regarded as one of the most delightful months on Okinawa. It signifies a season of renewal, when we celebrate life, nature, and community. And there’s so much to appreciate this month here on Okinawa and at Kadena FSS!
We start by honoring our resilient military children during Month of the Military Child. On 15 April, we join communities worldwide for “Purple Up for Military Kids,” encouraging everyone to wear purple in support of our military children and the sacrifices they make. Kadena’s Youth Center will celebrate with their Purple Up Bash on 25 April.
April also brings Easter festivities, and Kadena FSS has a basket of activities for all! Throughout the month, you can partake in a variety of egg hunts at several FSS activities. If Easter brunch is a cherished family tradition, indulge in exquisite breakfast and lunch dishes and snap memorable photos with the Easter Bunny at the Enlisted and Officers’ Clubs. Or, if you are looking to venture away for the Easter weekend; hop up North to Okuma for Okuma’s Beach Fest on Saturday and Sunday,19 and 20 April.
April’s longer and warmer days invite us to embrace the outdoors through activities such as golf, hiking and exploring the island’s breathtaking natural beauty. This leads us to another important celebration this month: Earth Day, observed globally on 22 April. In recognition, this month’s Oki Cultural Corner takes you to Okinawa’s cherished Yanbaru Forest, which is home to many indigenous species.

If golf is your passion or you’re looking to pick it up as a new hobby this spring, Kadena is the perfect place for you! Our two courses offer a wide array of amenities designed to enhance your golfing experience. Turn to this month’s spotlight on Chibana and Banyan Tree Golf Courses for all the insights you need to make the most of your time on the green.
April invites us to celebrate the resilience of our community and the joy of togetherness. We urge you to embrace the extended daylight and pleasant temperatures. Dive into this month’s issue of Venture to uncover all the ways you can experience this vibrant month to the fullest – the FSS Okinawa way!
With gratitude,

Bingo, a beloved game of chance, has a fascinating history that dates back to 16th-century Italy. It wasn’t until the 1920s, however, that the game truly took o in the United States, where it was originally known as “beano.” Players would use dried beans to mark their cards, and when someone won, they’d shout, “Beano!” Legend has it that one enthusiastic player accidentally yelled, “Bingo!” and the name stuck.
Today, bingo remains a cherished pastime for those who enjoy the thrill of competition and the chance to win big. Speaking of winning big, the Rocker Enlisted Club is hosting an incredible $75,000 Bingo event on Saturday, 26 April. That’s right—$75,000 in prizes will be up for grabs!
The doors will open at 9 am, giving players plenty of time to grab their books, secure their lucky spots, and prepare for an exciting day. A delicious lunch will be served at 11:30 am and the games kick o at 2 pm, featuring a total of 16 bingo games. Tickets are $125 per person, each ticket includes two books, covering 11 games, but for those looking to boost their odds, additional cards and books will be available for purchase. Players must be 18 years and over and you can get your tickets at customer service or memberplanet.
Bingo is more than just a game of luck—for many, it’s a ritual. Players often have unique systems, superstitions, or traditions they swear by to increase their chances of winning. Whether it’s lucky charms, favorite daubers, or a speci c seat in the hall, every detail matters when the stakes are this high. So, mark your calendars and come try your luck at the $75K Bingo event! Whether you’re a seasoned player or a newcomer ready to dive in, this is a can’t-miss opportunity to join in the fun and excitement. Who knows? You might just walk away a winner.

Rich with Life: Exploring Okinawa’s Yanbaru Forest

Article by Andrew Robinson | Design by Diana Lopez Hansen | Photos by Marina Chayka
Characterized by lush evergreen trees, mangroves, waterfalls, and a small bird with a big cult following, Japan’s largest subtropical forest is home to some of the richest biodiversity in the world.
Thanks to steady rain, humidity, and year-round warmth, Okinawa’s climate is well-suited for such a forest to thrive. Spanning the island’s northern half, Yanbaru provides an ecosystem for many indigenous species.
Each year on April 22, the United States appreciates Earth’s natural resources. This Earth Day, as an American living in Japan, turn your attention to the beauty and fragility of Okinawa’s ecology. Practically located in our backyard, the Yanbaru Forest commands both respect and admiration.
The Yanbaru's high biodiversity rate is surprising given its relatively low landmass. As the combined size of three Okinawan villages – Kunigami-son, Ogimi-son, and Higashi-son – the forest is only about 340 square kilometers. That’s about 0.1% of Japan’s total land area.
This little slice of land packs an incredible punch. Half of all bird species in Japan call the Yanbaru home, one of which is the Okinawa rail.
The rail is only found in the forests of Okinawa. Somewhat of a cultural symbol, it’s not uncommon to see souvenirs and artwork depicting the bird. One such landmark includes a large railshaped observation deck allowing explorers to climb inside the bird and look out over the forest facing the island’s most northern point – Cape Hedo.
Excitement for the rail is palpable island-wide. Many have a strong desire to protect this bird. The Yambaru Wildlife Conservation Center Ufugi Nature Museum might be one of the forest’s biggest defenders. The center o ers many educational exhibits that spread enthusiasm for wildlife conservation.
While the rail has captivated the hearts of many, the bird’s not alone in the forest of life. Other endemic species include the Okinawa woodpecker, Ishikawa’s frog, and the Ryukyu long-haired rat.
From the forest oor where the Yanbaru long-armed scarab beetle scurry, to the canopies of the Itajii trees, all living things are connected in an intricate ecosystem.

community. Be grateful not only for its allure but for the value its biodiversity brings. We rely on healthy ecosystems, like the Yanbaru, for essential building blocks of life, including fresh air to breathe, clean water to drink, and food
This world is available for you to appreciate. Kayak through the mangrove forest with ODR, or zipline through the with ITT. Bring some Earth-friendly activities down south by cleaning coastlines with Kadena Marina.
As Earth Day approaches, commit to educating yourself further about the necessity of healthy ecosystems. People tend to lead busy lives detached from the natural world. For those of us stationed in Okinawa, the Yanbaru is a constant reminder that all living things share the same delicate

Spring is here and so is Month of the Military Child!
Spring is a season of renewal and growth. While April showers bring May owers, April also marks a special time to honor a unique and vital group within our community, military children. O cially, recognized as Month of the Military Child, April is dedicated to celebrating the strength, resilience, and sacri ces of the youngest members of military families.
Military children navigate a life lled with challenges such as separations, deployments, frequent relocations, and sometimes even parental injuries. Despite these obstacles, they demonstrate remarkable courage, adaptability, and a maturity beyond their years. These extraordinary kids face change head-on, inspiring those around them with their resilience and positivity.

There are many ways to join the celebration throughout the month. One of the most visible is by participating in “Purple Up for Military Kids” on 15 April. Purple represents all branches of military service, and on this day, communities around the globe wear purple to show gratitude and support for military youth.
In these pages, you will nd activities and ideas to help you celebrate and honor the incredible children in our community.
We encourage everyone to join in the fun and show their appreciation for our military children.
At the 18th Force Support Squadron, we salute military children everywhere. Military life is lled with uncertainty and challenges, but you embrace it with resilience and grace. We are proud of you and celebrate the incredible role you play in our military community!

Sunshine, perfect weather, and endless
possibilities to explore — April is often considered the most beautiful time of year in Okinawa. Say “Hai Sai” to this glorious month as we take you on a tour of some picturesque spots we know you’ll be adding to your pin drops!
@amberrr_ann rested in the shade of a palm tree at the Nakijin Castle Ruins. Aside from its obvious beauty and lush surroundings, Nakijin Castle is rich in history. In its prime, it was the second-largest castle on the island, just behind Shurijo. What makes this castle particularly unique is that, while most castles were built with Ryukyu limestone, architects broke the mold with Nakijin by using hard Paleozoic limestone pulled directly from the site. Ancient fossils have been discovered within! So, the next time you’re itching to explore, hop in the car and head north to walk the grounds of this 14thcentury treasure.

@ro0xay immersed herself in the vibrance and beauty of Bios Hill while wearing ryusou, the traditional dress of the Ryukyuan people. Bios Hill spans 65 acres and aims to recreate Okinawa’s natural landscape as it appeared in the past. This stunning nature park, located near Onna Village, boasts the largest variety of orchids in Japan. Unique activities include boat rides, canoeing on the lake, and riding in a water bu alo-drawn cart. Bios Hill also features some of the largest tree swings and hammocks throughout the forest.
@daphneyj took some time for solitude and rest on an enchanting swing in the Forest of Prayer. If the aesthetic coloring of this photograph isn’t enough to draw you in, the many trails surrounded by lush greenery and ocean views will! This peaceful location o ers several areas for prayer and meditation, making it perfect for those looking for grounding and a nature x.
Whether you’re taking a walk through history, nding a cool place to rest from the sun’s rays, or exploring a new cafe, we want to hear from you! Share your adventures with Kadena FSS by using #VentureinOki.
