Design Portfolio by Kabir Manoj Dole Architectural Works from 2017 - 2024
Curriculum Vitae I am Kabir Dole, a second-year Master of Architecture student pursuing a concentration in Health and Well-being. I believe architecture has the power to alter people's perception of space. Architecture is about building a story through design and bridging a built environment's user experience, context, and sustainability aspects. With sensitivity towards material usage, which helps achieve not only sustainable design but also helps bring attention to contextual ecology.

Research Papers 1. Exploring the Viability of Open Building Concept in Healthcare Architecture This paper investigates implementing Open Building Concept in healthcare architecture to create flexible, adaptable, and sustainable designs. Using mixed methods including a literature review, expert interviews, and case studies, it highlights OBC's advantages. Interviews with industry leaders Paul Strohm and John Pangrazio provide insights on OBC in healthcare. Case studies of Banner Estrella Medical Center, INO Hospital, and Object One Residential Building demonstrate OBC principles. The paper offers a new approach to handling changing facilities and coordinating stakeholders in healthcare infrastructure. Overall, it provides architects and healthcare professionals valuable insights for developing dynamic, sustainable, patient-centered facilities. The research makes a case for revolutionizing healthcare architecture through Open Building Concept's flexibility and adaptability. 2. The interdependence of facade design and performance in inpatient rooms This study investigates the interdependence of facade design and performance in inpatient rooms by examining six case studies from different climate regions in the US. Using data from OpenStudio, it analyzes the relationship between exterior and interior factors, categorizing places by heating, cooling, or equal load dominance. The methodology involves examining energy consumption and comparing the case studies. A literature review covers topics like glazing performance, occupant well-being, and building envelopes' impact on humans. The research finds that thoughtful design incorporating room layout, shading devices, and technology is key to enhancing patient comfort and well-being. By focusing on elements like daylight, views, window dimensions, and ratios, the study explores how facade considerations affect inpatient environments. The insights emphasize optimizing facades to improve energy efficiency and occupant health through contextual design adaptations.

The project was a crucial historic landmark to the neighborhood as the proposed building sits within the existing walls of the old Pilgrim Baptist Church which was designed by the famous architects Sullivan and Adler built in the 1890s. The significance of the existing walls was very imperative to our design by creating spaces in such a way that the users experience the relationship between old and the new through a journey.

The P.A.R.C. is a rehabilitation and mental health facility between the Harold Washington Library and the Metropolitan Correctional Center in Chicago, IL. The project goal is best described through 4 keywords: Healing, Impact, Purpose, and Society. At P.A.R.C., a person's purpose is cultivated and encouraged through education, mentorship in finances and career development, and a residential reentry program. PARC will engage positively with the Chicago community through its architecture and operations.

The concept of freedom used to guide this project is about giving a second chance, making people better, and not being bound to addiction. Free in letting your calm mind control your actions rather than the chaotic mind controlled by urges and desires. This concept sits well with the context of the building in Chicago, as the city is chaotic, and we are trying to create a calm and relaxing environment. The concept of freedom architecturally talks about not conforming to the rigidity of the site context but adopting fluidity through design.

Horizon Hospital Won Design Topper for the Semester
Collaborators : Kabir Dole Software used : Revit, AutoCAD, Procreate, Lumion 12, Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator.
This project was located in the small town of Udupi, India. The project was a live proposal for a district-level hospital. The prompt for this project was to create a new modern-looking hospital with a residence block behind the hospital for the doctors and nurses to stay. The design's intent was to create a well-planned hospital with a focus on the circulation for general patients and highrisk patients. A lot of focus was given to the layout of the emergency ward, as seen in the first-floor plan. The space has underground parking going two levels below.

Exploded Axonometric The planning was done in such a way that each floor houses functions which follow a particular order, this creates easy access for doctors and patients. There is an atrium open to sky which brings in natural light for the entire interior of the building.

When one views any hospital, the immediate reaction is to be afraid or feel nervous. With the design for this hospital, I wanted to create a space for the users where they can feel less stressed by providing breakout green spaces on the third and fourth floors. Since studies show that providing such green spaces tends to reduce stress levels, it became a design intent to create them for the patients, doctors, and patients' families.

Hotel Shibuya Collaborators : Kabir Dole, Aditya Nimbalkar and Vaishnavi Nataraj Software used : Revit, AutoCAD, SketchUp, Procreate, Lumion 12, Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator.
This project is located in Shibuya , Japan. The project brief was to design a Luxury hotel over an underground subway system which connects into the main lobby of the building. A lot of amenities such as a dining space, banquet hall, night club, art exhibition area and many more were planned out in a methodical manner which compliments japanese minimilism. The word Shibuya Tower means making contact with and taking in the atmosphere of the forest, this being our concept we created green pockets within the hotel to juxtapose the concrete jungle surroundings.

Extruding rectangles as they show to house most efficent planning.
Creating height difference so structure in the back can enjoy the scramble square.
Creating a curved sloping exterior to maximize diffused natural lighting in rooms
Creating green patches and garden floors to create a juxtaposition amongst the concrete jungle in which the site sits.
31
Design Development
The design was put forth in such a way that the interior space of the hotel would get natural light coming from the north and south side of the site. The infinity pool which is located at the 23rd floor has been planned to have a beautiful view towards the scramble square. The rooms facing west side would get the views to the magestic Mt. Fuji.

Competition Projects Collaborators : Kabir Dole and Akash Shetty
Museum of Design This competion project was located in Oslo, Norway. In a Northern country like Norway, the main consideration was given to the climatic background of the site. The materials used for this project are mainly glass, wood, and stone. The concept for designing the building was green and minimal, that resonates with context while also being environmentally friendly. The green earth sheltered roof is not only aesthetically pleasing but also has environmental effect that makes the interior warm and doesn't let the heat escape which is important considering the climate of Oslo which is quite cold throughout the year.

INSAKAS Community Center Collaborators : Kabir Dole, Harshil Jain, Hrushikesh Chavan and Naveen Reddy
The Refugee Community Centre at Mayukwayukwa, Zambia, is crucial because many refugees have come here over the years and formed new settlements. This community learning centre focuses on vocational training for people to build their own houses as they develop their settlement, this learning centre being the backdrop teaching them the construction techniques directly from the site. Understanding the site's climate and the context, the orientation of the learning centre plays a crucial role in reducing energy consumption by allowing natural daylight and adding thermal comfort since electricity is unavailable. The learning spaces are oriented for climate and multipurpose space and positioned in a way that does not cut any trees on site. The Private areas/ Dorms are segregated from the public areas/learning areas.
