KABANA MUMS Meet Melissa

Owner & Designer for RUByyaya

What does the ideal Mother’s Day look like for you?

I always spend Sunday morning with my Mum & Dad, we go to Mass and then come home to my house for a cup of tea and cake! My children that are no longer at home, always ring in the morning so I will look forward to their calls. My gorgeous daughter, Sophia usually comes downstairs and shares a few laughs with my father and debriefs on the footy game from Saturday night We usually have Sunday early dinner with whoever is around.

What is your go to Mother’s Day outfit?

I love my Itami pampelone white cotton poplin pants and if it’s a nice day will coordinate that with the Rubyyaya Andros green top I am very simplistic in my fashion choices and my outfit must take me from walking the dog to casual dinner.

What's a nostalgic memory you have with your mother or grandmother that always brings a smile to your face?

I dearly loved my grandmother and was blessed that my grandparents lived with us for a few years when I was a small child. I loved spending time with her and she would teach me to embroider fabric and feed me pancakes with butter and sugar

What smell reminds you of your Mother or Grandmother?

The smell of Chloe Nomad Eau De Parfum

What's the most rewarding aspect of being a mother?

Watching my children navigate through the ups and downs of life.

Meet TYLER

Designer for Lulasoul & Lulalife

What does the ideal Mother’s Day look like for you?

For me, an ideal Mother's Day would be to have my family together to share a relaxed breakfast outside on the deck, followed by a long beach walk with our 2 dogs

What is your go to Mother’s Day outfit?

I'm all about comfort and natural fibres. So, I’m loving the relaxed Wisteria top and pant with a pair of chunky slides. I love the muted colours and the luxuriously soft viscose fabric.

What's a nostalgic memory you have with your mother or grandmother that always brings a smile to your face?

My sister and I took our mum and our 2 daughters for high tea for Mother’s Day at the Versace Hotel. We have a photo of the three generations which I cherish, as this was the last time we were all together

What smell reminds you of your Mother or Grandmother?

We would visit our Nana every Sunday night and I remember the smell of the roast dinner cooking as we walked in her house This was a smell that I will never forget

Can you share a funny or memorable "Mum fail" moment that you can now laugh about?

Oh dear I don't want to incriminate myself here as there have been many that I probably shouldn't mention. I did leave Kai, my youngest behind after soccer training, and drove a few kms down the M1 before realising he wasn’t in the car I’m sure I could get Mother Of The Year for that

Meet Jeanette

What does the ideal Mother’s Day look like for you?

The ideal mothers to me is a family tradition of always starting with the family taking me out to breakfast and a beautiful bunch of flowers for the house that I can admire looking at.

What smell reminds you of your Mother or Grandmother?

The smell of Estée Lauder Youth Dew perfume was one of my grandmothers’ favourite perfumes It has been around for as long as I can remember.

Family of course. Watching your children grow into adults, then marring and starting their families

Women’s Only Travel

How did the idea of creating ladies-only travel expeditions come about, and what inspired you to pursue this unique niche?

In 2017 my friends and I had reached the stage where our children were relatively selfsufficient or could at least manage without us for a short period of time, and we started talking about planning a girls getaway As a travel agent I was tasked with making all the arrangements, and ultimately 18 of us flew to India for 10 days. It wasn’t quite the destination they were expecting (Byron Bay was probably what first came to mind), but it was a HUGE success. We had a fabulous time. New friendships were forged, and old friendships cemented. And we discovered that our families really could survive without us. We all returned happy and fulfilled. So, the seed was planted, and I organised another trip to Morocco; then as word spread the demand grew and I decided to make ‘ladies only’ adventures an official offering as part of my core business, The Classic Safari Company. And thus, Journeys for Women was born.

In what ways do you believe women benefit from joining travel expeditions exclusively designed for them?

Put simply, we know what women want. Our itineraries are designed by women, for women We incorporate a mix of adventure, cultural immersion, shopping, down-time and solo time to suit all our travellers. There are so many corners of this world that inspire curiosity and wonder, but often women don’t feel comfortable travelling to these places alone or have partners or family members who may not share their love of travel Expeditions that are exclusively designed for women offer them the freedom of solo travel but with the safety and security of a small group It’s where new friendships are forged, experiences are shared and fun and laughter is had, and as women, we know how important that is to our overall wellbeing.

What elements do you incorporate to ensure that your ladies-only travel expeditions provide a distinctive and empowering experience for participants?

Women are warriors when it comes to understanding how tourism can be a force for good and on all our journeys we showcase female innovation and strive to support local women This is as powerful for our participants as it is to the communities we visit. Women supporting women is the most effective way to amplify all our voices

How do you curate destinations and activities to cater to the diverse interests and preferences of women travellers?

We curate journeys that showcase the landscape, architecture, history, art, flora and fauna, cuisine, festivals, and lifestyles within the destinations we visit. Our activities encompass learning about cultural heritage whilst also spending time with women in their everyday lives. Whilst destination dependent, activities may include viewing impressive architectural wonders, from ancient forts to centuries old palaces or the pyramids, whilst also visiting local homes and breaking bread with local families We may weave with women, learn to block print or make our own signature scent. We wander through thriving flower markets, chat with vegetable vendors and create culinary masterpieces from local ingredients We drink chai, sake, champagne and sangria and dine in some of the finest restaurants and little-known gems. We track animals in the wild and sometimes go wild and dance the night away We chant with monks, sing with school kids and travel by camel, boat, plane, train and tuk tuks. And we listen. If we haven’t covered a specific interest we’ll find a way to weave it into the journey!

How has your ladies-only travel community evolved, and what role does it play in fostering connections among participants?

Our Journeys for Women ‘Tribe’ has predominantly grown through repeat and referred travellers. There is power in women coming together and the friendships that have been fostered is something that we are truly proud of! Many ladies join our tours as solo travellers and leave with a host of new friends. In fact, many ladies who meet for the first time on one of our journeys band together and sign up for future adventures. There is great comfort in knowing you will be travelling with likeminded ladies Whilst on tour we sit around campfires, on deserted beaches or on Saharan sand dunes and learn about, and from, each other, sharing stories, anecdotes, memes, recipes, and great lifestyle tips And all the while we are making fabulous memories that can be shared for years to come.

Can you share any memorable stories or experiences where the sense of community among women travellers was particularly strong during one of your expeditions?

EVERY journey has incredible moments of connection. There are so many I could publish a book! A highlight from one of our India trips was swept up in a wedding and dancing through the streets in India.

Ensuring safety is crucial in any travel expedition. How do you prioritize and address safety concerns specific to female travellers?

As women ’ s only travel continues to grow, ‘ women only’ offerings are also on the rise, such as ‘pink taxis’ in Dubai, women only train carriages in India, women only accommodation offerings and spas/bath-houses that have women-only sections or are exclusively for women. We also ensure that our travellers are always familiar with local customs and culture prior to travel, and we are always in the company of our local guides (often also women) who always ensure the safety of our groups, provide guidance on cultural norms and who speak the local language.

We also make sure to follow all health and safety protocols, providing resources for our travellers to ensure they are up to date with all destination entry and exit requirements, vaccination recommendations and strongly advise they keep up to date with the Australian Government’s Smart Traveller information.

What measures are in place to ensure the well-being and comfort of participants throughout the journey?

We combine real adventure in unreal style! We carefully curate a range of accommodations throughout our journeys that meet our discerning travellers’ standards of luxury and comfort Even when we ’ re off the beaten track, desert-camping in Morocco, slumbering under the stars in Kenya, or sleeping on ice in Antarctica, attention to service and comfort are our main concerns Well-being comes in many forms, and throughout our journeys we make sure there is down-time so that the women who travel with us can get the break that they deserve, have a chance to read that book they haven’t had the chance to pick up, and take time to just rest and recharge. We travel in air-conditioned comfort (aside from riding camels and driving in local tuk tuks and open-air safari vehicles), ensure that everywhere we eat meets high hygiene standards and we endeavour to accommodate all dietary requirements.

Are there any emerging trends or shifts in preferences that you ' ve observed among women interested in travel expeditions?

Women are venturing further afield, keen to explore more of the world that is opening up to them through small group travel They’re not just heading for the safety of Europe anymore, but really branching out and exploring places they might not have otherwise gone to if they were travelling alone. Our trips to India, Morocco, Kenya, Egypt and Jordan are always sell out destinations, but we ’ ve also had more and more interest in places like Bhutan, Georgia and The Stans, Madagascar, Norway, Uganda, Peru, Patagonia and Colombia. Small group women ’ s travel has made these destinations more accessible There’s safety in numbers, so we ’ re busy developing itineraries that explore further, dig deeper and showcase and support local women doing extraordinary things

How do you stay attuned to the evolving needs and desires of your target audience when planning future expeditions?

Many of our travellers are not first-timers with Journeys for Women and the Classic Safari Company They’ve often been around the block with us more than once, and we always encourage feedback about how we can make our trips better. We take this feedback very seriously when designing new itineraries or redesigning existing ones For anyone who hasn’t travelled with us before, we ask A LOT of questions to make sure we truly understand what our travellers are looking for and if we are the right fit for each other. There’s nothing worse than unmet expectations when it comes to travel, so selecting the right itinerary for you is paramount.

What advice would you give to women who are considering joining a ladies-only travel expedition for the first time?

There are a lot of companies jumping onto the ‘ women ’ s only’ travel bandwagon and finding the right fit for you is paramount Our advice is to be sure to travel with a company that is tried and tested, with deep and extensive knowledge of your chosen destination. This will ensure you will have a truly immersive experience – because they know where to go, when to go, what to see and the best way to see it It’s important to understand what you want from your travels, in terms of values, content, pace and style; and you should be sure to interrogate your chosen travel company as much as they (should) interrogate you Find an itinerary that excites you and offers you the mix of activities, adventure, and physical exertion that you ’ re looking for, and you will doubtless meet other women who are the same as you. Be open minded, curious and adventurous. You will meet travellers from all walks of life and come away with incredible memories and new friends. Be prepared to be surprised at how much you will enjoy travelling with a bunch of other fabulous women Most of the ladies who have travelled with Journeys for Women immediately book their next trip as soon as they get home It’s addictive be warned!

Are there any exciting upcoming destinations or themes you can give us a sneak peek into for your future expeditions?

We’re always developing exciting new itineraries Africa is one of our favourite destinations, so it’s always a delight to introduce our ladies to life on safari for the first time. We love exploring beyond the usual suspects, so expect Ethiopia, Madagascar and West Africa in our future, along with some tried and tested returns to Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe If you love horse-riding, you’ll love riding through Rajasthan in India later this year. Also in development are our new Mothers & Daughters itineraries, our Travel Tales series of literary journeys with guest authors, itineraries that focus on wellness and yoga, and hosted bespoke getaways designed for private groups of girlfriends. We’re always open to new ideas too If you ’ re dreaming about it, tell us where you want to go, and we ’ re confident we can make it happen!
