BEHIND THE SEAMS: MEET THE LULALIFE & LULASOUL DESIGNER, TYLER

Tyler is our talented, creative, fashion designer of the much loved Australian fashion brands, Lulasoul & Lulalife Tyler has been designing fashion for the past 35 years including the iconic Dyeworks fashion brand from the 80’s and 90s and has been designing our stable of brands for the past 12 years Not only is she creative but meticulous with pattern making and a passion and work ethic that is unrivalled We sit down with Tyler to ask her a few questions regarding one of her life long passions, FASHION!

What do you love about being a fashion designer?

I love the creative process of seeing my ideas come to fruition, developing the colours and prints at the start, to perfecting the new shapes and making the needed changes along the way until I’m happy with the end result. I feel a great sense of achievement when a range is finally complete and hanging in the showroom after months of hard work

How do you overcome a creative block?

I do make a mess when I’m working on a range I like to place all the prints on the floor or hang them over the racks of my workroom and be able to see them from different angles. I’ll move them around and create unexpected print combinations.

Sometimes I can glance down, see a print and the ideas flow. It is important to reflect on successful styles from the past, analyse why they worked and build on them

How do you juggle family life with a husband, raising 3 children, 2 dogs, a horse and with a full time job?

It is getting easier now that the kids are growing up and have become more independent. I’m lucky to be able to work from my home studio. This enables me to spend my time focusing on what is needed, instead of the distractions of working at head office and stressing in traffic for hours

It has taken a long time to do so, but I now prioritise my weekends by spending quality time with my family which always includes my gorgeous cavoodle girls I don't horse ride as often as I would like to these days but when I do, it always feels so good to be in the saddle. The sense of freedom that comes with that is incomparable

What does a normal day look like for you?

I’m so lucky to wake up being surrounded by nature, trees, birds, space and fresh air It's a beautiful way to start the day. I normally take my dogs for a walk, saying hello at the local horses, sheep and donkey along the way. In summer when the sun is up early, we fit in a beach walk, grab a coffee on the way home and I’m back in time to start work for the day. Then, it’s straight to my desk answering emails that have come in from India overnight seeking my approval of measurement charts before production is cut, chasing prints and emailing off new style sheets. There is always a call or two from the boss to see what I’m up to and to touch base or set up a meeting I spend most days working on new ranges or perfecting fits before they go into production. I try on every garment to make sure they are comfortable before they get the green light Once new ranges are complete, we do the photoshoots which I really enjoy It is so good to see the finished product and work with the models at different locations.

What were your design influences for the latest Spring ranges?

Colour is always important with the Lula ranges. The Spring Collection has a strong tropical influence with hints of South American vibes. The garments are flattering yet still comfortable, designed with our climate and lifestyle in mind

What are your favourite pieces from the July collection?

My favourite piece in Lulalife July drop is the Curtis Dress This is such an easy shape to wear. You can just throw the dress on and you ' re done. I love the combinations of the 4 different prints that contrast yet work so well together The birds in the print make me happy too The navy Miller Dress in the Lulasoul range is great. A lot of thought went into the placement of this digital print to create a unique piece

Tell me about an important lesson you have learned from working in the fashion industry?

What advice would you give someone when choosing a dress style?

Know what suits your body shape and enhance your assets and don't draw attention to your flaws (we all have them) A dress should be comfortable and make you feel good, building your confidence. Don't be afraid to step out of your comfort zone. Try a new shape or print or a colour that you wouldn’t normally choose You might pleasantly surprise yourself and your friends too. It should also be practical for your lifestyle. Our natural only fibres are perfect for our climate

To be kind There are so many people involved in the garment making process, from the cotton farmers, to the weavers, dyers, printers, manufacturers, agents, our office and warehouse staff. Everyone holds an important role in producing a quality garment, all as important as one another with their own lives and stories to tell I've learnt to be thankful and appreciate them and give credit where it is due. Gratitude goes a long way
