KABANA LADIES: Meet Sue Fantini Tell us about yourself, your artistic background and how you began your journey as an artist.

From an early age have always loved colour, creating and travel and always had art supplies of some kind with me wherever I went. I am a self taught artist, who over the years has dabbled in many areas including ceramics & jewellery making before eventually coming back to painting and more recently digital art which I love. It’s a great tool and I love that I can combine an original painting and change it digitally.

What motivated you to pursue a career in arts?

I have always been drawn to traditional textiles, handmade tiles and ceramics and spent many years travelling the globe sourcing treasure for my retail store on the mid north coast.

What is your primary source of inspiration for your artwork?

Having been lucky to visit many amazing locations around the world. If I had to pick I would say Asia is my favourite and where I feel most at home. My inspiration is drawn from those times. Palm filled bays, old patina walls, amazing mosaics and of course beautiful traditional textiles which unfortunately are becoming harder to find.

How would you describe your artistic style, and how has it evolved over the years?

I love colour and pattern and really cant do beige and am not attracted to shiny things, even diamonds!

Give me handmade any day over mass produced. I cant really put my style into a box as it is ever changing and evolving. I don't really get creative's block as I have way too many ideas and just love creating new things to see what will happen. Sometimes it works sometimes not, but my paint overs are often my favourite works.

What challenges have you faced as an artist, and how has it evolved over the years?

The hardest thing I find about being an artist is promoting “yourself” as a business. While I have been self employed for many years it is much different selling your own creations and for quite a while it was hard for me to say I am the artist of this work when people asked.

Do you have a favourite project or piece that stands out to you?

I still consider myself to be ”emerging” and am excited to have collaborated with Lulalife on the Kasbah Print. Textile design is something I really would love to pursue in the future as I think my designs lend perfectly to this application.

What advice would you give to emerging artists looking to establish themselves in the art world?

My advice to any artist starting out is to just go for it! I started painting again age 60 and am loving the new life style I have created for myself. It’s a bit of a roller coaster but playing with paint is so much fun and if something doesn’t work you just paint over and se where it takes you.
