Mitten follows the final rehearsal weeks of Mitten wir im Leben sind, based on Bach’s six cello suites. The documentary will have its first screening at Kaaitheater, after which Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker, cellist Jean-Guihen Queyras and director Gerard-Jan Claes have a discussion.

Toen Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker in 1980 in New York aan Violin Phase werkte, speelde er naast de muziek van Steve Reich slechts één andere opname in de studio: de Brandenburgse Concerten van Bach. Na meer dan 35 jaar zet ze het werk met deze muziek verder, in gezelschap van zestien dansers uit verschillende Rosasgeneraties en live begeleid door het barokensemble B’Rock.

Lorsque Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker travaille à Violin Phase à New York, en 1980, une seule musique autre que celle de Reich est diffusée dans le studio : les Concertos brandebourgeois de Bach. Après plus de 35 ans, elle poursuit le travail avec cette musique, en compagnie de seize danseurs de Rosas, de différentes générations, et l’ensemble baroque B’Rock qui joue en direct.

During her 1980 stay in New York, in which she first rehearsed her celebrated Violin Phase to the music of Steve Reich, the only other recording playing in Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker’s studio was the Brandenburg Concertos by Bach. After more than 35 years, she is pursuing her work with this music, joined by sixteen dancers from various Rosas generations and accompanied live by the Baroque ensemble B’Rock.

LIGIA LEWISDO/DE Sorrow Swag

Cette première partie – en bleu – du triptyque de Ligia Lewis autour de la race et de la représentation. Elle crée de façon méticuleuse un corps hybride en état de flux constant. Vers la fin, ce corps se transforme et se réduit uniquement à une bouche et à un cri implacable. Avec minor matter – le deuxième volet, rouge – elle a fait forte impression lors de WoWmen!18, en mars 2018.

Sorrow Swag is the first part – in blue – of Ligia Lewis’ triptych that deals with race and representation. She meticulously creates a hybrid body that is in constant flux. Towards the end, the body transforms into nothing more than a mouth and an unrelenting scream. Earlier this year, Lewis made a big impression at WoWmen!18 with minor matter, the second, red instalment of this series.

Op meticuleuze wijze schept ze een hybride lichaam dat zich in een constante staat van flux bevindt. Naar het einde toe transformeert het lichaam tot niets meer dan een mond en een onverbiddelijke schreeuw. Met minor matter – het tweede, rode luik – maakte ze eerder dit jaar indruk tijdens WoWmen!18.

Deux hommes souhaitent se laisser aller une dernière fois. Begin the Beguine est le dernier texte qu’ait écrit le cinéaste culte John Cassavetes. Cette allégorie d’une noirceur absolue sur l’amour et la mort est restée plus de 25 ans au fond d’un tiroir des ayants droit de Cassavetes. Jusqu’à ce que la maison d’édition allemande S. Fischer Verlag a invité Jan Lauwers à assurer la mise en scène de ce chef-d’œuvre.

Twee mannen willen zich voor een laatste keer goed laten gaan. Begin the Beguine is de laatste tekst die de legendarische cineast John Cassavetes schreef.

De gitzwarte allegorie over liefde en dood lag meer dan 25 jaar in een kast bij de erven van Cassavetes.

Totdat de Duitse uitgever S. Fischer Verlag aan Jan Lauwers vroeg de enscenering van dit meesterwerk op zich te nemen.

Two men want to live it up one last time. Begin the Beguine is the last text that the legendary filmmaker John Cassavetes ever wrote. The jet-black allegory about love and death was kept in a cupboard for 25 years by Cassavetes’ heirs. Until the German publisher S. Een arenlezer loopt achter de maaiers aan en raapt de aren die op het veld zijn gevallen alsnog op. Ook bij het maken van een werk blijven er veel ideeën liggen in het atelier.

In AREN neemt Benjamin Verdonck je mee op tocht langs onuitgevoerde of groeiende werkstukken uit zijn atelier. Verwacht je aan een parcours langs installaties, een wunderkammer en een miniatuurtheater.

VAN DE OORLOG IN SYRIË IS ER EEN OVERVLOED AAN BEELDEN, EN TOCH ZIEN WE NIET ZOVEEL. EEN GESPREK MET CHRYSTÈLE KHODR & WAËL ALI DOOR EVA DECAESSTECKER (KAAITHEATER)

Het was bijna alsof we met z’n drieën op een terras zaten. Ik dronk thee, Waël Ali en Chrystèle Khodr staken zo nu en dan een nieuwe sigaret op. Alleen zaten er tussen ieder van ons telkens duizenden kilometers. Sinds twee jaar werken beide kunstenaars samen.

Afstand en de bijhorende vertraging maken deel uit van hun werkproces en dat ervaren ze lang niet enkel op een negatieve manier. Tijdens MOUSSEM CITIES: Damascus presenteren ze hun eerste twee werken: Temporary Stay en I once entered a garden.

Het valt op dat in de twee werken die jullie brengen tijdens MOUSSEM CITIES: Damascus, jullie vertrekken van heel specifieke en intieme momenten.

CK: Ik denk dat veel artiesten uitgaan van heel persoonlijke vragen. Aan de basis van Temporary Stay ligt een cassette die ik twintig jaar geleden bij mijn moeder vond. Mijn oom had deze cassette in 1976 uit Zweden opgestuurd naar mijn vader in Beiroet. Het was de eerste keer dat hij van zich liet horen sinds hij samen met zijn vrouw en zijn twee kinderen de oorlog ontvlucht was. In 2015, toen we elkaar nog maar kort kenden, had Waël mijn voorstelling Beyrouth Sépia op het festival Sens Interdits in Lyon gezien, terwijl ik zijn stuk Je ne m’en souviens plus zag in Beiroet. Toen ik besliste om met deze cassette aan de slag te gaan, schreef ik hem aan. Ik wilde er wat mee doen, en wel samen met hem. Waël heeft een zekere terughoudendheid en bescheidenheid in zijn artistieke benadering, en ik wist dat ik hem dit persoonlijke verhaal kon toevertrouwen.

De cassette is dus inderdaad persoonlijk, maar daarom is ze nog niet zo intiem. Tijdens de oorlog in Libanon stuurden mensen elkaar vaak audiocassettes toe waarop ze nieuws hadden ingesproken. Het was een verbinding tussen diegenen die ter plaatse bleven, en de anderen die geïmmigreerd waren. We hebben allemaal bijzondere banden met ons verleden, en we hebben ons op de één of de andere manier allemaal wel eens verplaatst. Door onze samenwerking in dit project kreeg het verhaal van de cassette een andere dimensie. Het onderzoek spitste zich vooral toe op vragen over het theater: hoe kun je vandaag theater maken? En hoe verenig je de beschouwingen van twee personen die deze geschiedenis op een heel andere manier beleefd hebben, omdat ze een heel ander persoonlijk en politiek verleden hebben?

Wat betekent deze cassette voor jou, Waël?

WA: Toen ik de cassette voor het eerst beluisterde, boeide ze me meteen, en wel om verschillende redenen. Ze herinnert me aan een ver verleden, een tijd waarin het beeld niet het belangrijkste was. In de jaren 80, toen we klein waren, luisterden we vaker naar radiozenders dan dat we televisie keken. Bovendien is het verhaal tegelijk heel bijzonder en alledaags. In Libanon maakten de migranten die tijdens de burgeroorlog waren vertrokken, opnames van hun stem om nieuws over te brengen. Ten slotte contrasteert het gebruik van audio met de huidige oorlog, waar er een overvloed aan beelden is.

Van de oorlog in Syrië is er een overvloed aan beelden, en toch zien we niet zoveel.

Het boeide me ook dat een actrice haar eigen geschiedenis wilde brengen. Daardoor werd het mogelijk om vragen te stellen bij de uitvoering en het acteerspel.

Een centrale vraag tijdens het creëren was hoe de echte, scenische aanwezigheid zich verhoudt tot de stemmen uit het verleden. In zekere zin stellen deze aanwezigheden elkaar in vraag en ‘besmetten’ ze elkaar.

Na de reflecties over het theater in Temporary Stay werd jullie tweede samenwerking I once entered a garden geen theatervoorstelling, maar een installatie. Vloeit deze veranderde vorm voort uit het stellen van deze vragen?

CK: Niet noodzakelijk. I once entered a garden vertrekt vanuit de vragen die Bissane Al Charif, onze scenograaf voor Temporary Stay, zich stelt. Zij maakte eerder al twee installaties die eveneens uitgingen van persoonlijke thema’s: dat was zowel het geval in haar eerste stuk Mémoire(s) de femme, als in het tweede, Sham. Bissane stelt zich vragen bij onze verhouding tot ons lichaam in tijden van grote verandering en ballingschap. Hoe kunnen we uitdrukking geven aan onze eerste zintuiglijke ervaringen? Hoe kunnen we de herinneringen reconstrueren die verbonden zijn met ons lichaam, en dan vooral wanneer de plekken waar deze herinneringen gevormd zijn, niet meer toegankelijk zijn?

WA: De vorm van de installatie komt dus van Bissane, maar hij was bovendien ook het meest geschikt. Want hij maakt een intiemere of persoonlijkere band mogelijk tussen de toeschouwer, de ruimte en de verhalen. De toeschouwers ontdekken deze verhalen en gaan ermee in interactie.

In de installatie brengen jullie de lichamelijke vragen van Bissane naar een heel specifiek moment.

CK: Vanuit de vragen van Bissane gingen we op zoek naar een gemeenschappelijke taal waarmee we het onderwerp kunnen behandelen, en begonnen we interviews af te nemen van mensen van verschillende generaties. Deze gesprekken gingen vooral over hun eerste seksuele en emotionele ervaringen. De getuigen kwamen uit buurlanden die verschillende oorlogen hadden doorgemaakt of bezet waren: Libanon, Syrië, Palestina en Irak. Deze band tussen de geschiedenis en de plaats was heel belangrijk. Denken we aan Bagdad in de jaren 80, dan denken we aan het embargo en traangas, maar niet aan een jongen in een groot huis die naar een sekslijn belt. De Iraakse getuige woonde in een enorm groot huis, met een telefoon in het salon. Zijn enige bezorgdheid was dus hoe hij erotische telefoongesprekken kon voeren terwijl iedereen in het salon langs hem heen liep! Zijn grote tragedie was dat hij de meisjes nooit zag, hij hoorde hen alleen aan de telefoon. Ook bij de Libanese getuige van 57 jaar is de plaats onvermijdelijk aanwezig. Ze vertelt: “In de tijd waarin het Israëlische leger Beiroet veroverde, in 82, heb ik de dood van dichtbij meegemaakt. In plaats van aan de oorlog te denken, dacht ik aan hoe ik seksuele relaties kon hebben zonder mijn maagdelijkheid te verliezen, in plaats van te genieten van het leven. Wat was ik stom!” De jongste getuige komt uit Syrië en haalt herinneringen op aan vredestijd. Ze probeert zich een laatste keer deze momenten van vrede eigen te maken. Ze beseft dat hoe verder de tijd voortschrijdt, hoe verder de mensen verwijderd zijn van oorlogstijd, hoe beter ze over hun lichaam kunnen spreken. Ze hoopt dat zij op een dag ook haar huis uit kan komen, de tuin ingaan, een sigaret opsteken en opnieuw vertrouwd kan worden met haar geschiedenis en haar lichaam.

Soms, als we het woord ‘oorlog’ in een zin gebruiken, dan zuigt dat woord ‘oorlog’ alles naar zich toe. Vreemd genoeg blijven deze intieme momenten in oorlogstijd bij I once entered a garden heel teder, zelfs al vinden ze plaats tijdens de Israëlische bezetting of de opeenvolgende oorlogen in Irak.

In deze installatie getuigen vooral vrouwen. Is dat een bewuste keuze, of was het gemakkelijker om aan hun verhalen te geraken? En waarom kozen jullie er toch voor om ook een man aan het woord te laten?

CK: We hadden niet de intentie om alleen met vrouwelijke getuigen te werken. Na meerdere gesprekken met heel verschillende personen kozen we voor verhalen die op een heel gevoelige manier met elkaar verbonden zijn. We vonden het belangrijk om over de 10

getuigenis te beschikken van een man die zijn jeugd beleefde in het begin van de jaren 90 in Bagdad. Luisteren we naar deze getuigenissen, dan worden we ons er al snel van bewust dat de sociale repressie op mannen en vrouwen werd uitgeoefend, weliswaar op verschillende manieren. Het gaat om repressie en censuur die in de eerste plaats op het lichaam worden uitgeoefend – of dat nu een vrouwen- of een mannenlichaam is. Op de plek waar ik vandaan kom, is het even moeilijk om een man of een vrouw te zijn.

Wat betekent het om de twee werken voor het eerst tegelijkertijd te tonen? En is er volgens jullie een verband tussen de werken?

CK: We hadden niet de intentie om twee werken te maken die elkaar weerspiegelen.

Het zijn twee verschillende vormen, een theaterstuk en een installatie. Als er al continuïteit is, dan is dat doordat dezelfde mensen de twee projecten gemaakt hebben.

Het raakt me echt dat de twee werken de eerste keer gelijktijdig voorgesteld worden in het kader van MOUSSEM CITIES: Damascus. Ik ben blij dat we hebben kunnen samenwerken aan deze twee projecten, ondanks de geografische afstand die het werkproces een eigen ritme geeft, en soms ook vertraagt. We hebben een gemeenschappelijke artistieke taal gevonden die geschikt is voor onze vraagstukken en onze theaterpraktijk van vandaag.

De afstand vertraagt het werkproces, maar ik kan me voorstellen dat die ook meer tijd laat om na te denken over het werk.

WA: De traagheid laat ons toe om opnieuw stil te staan bij onze keuzes en beslissingen, om andere wegen uit te proberen en om teksten te maken die nadien weer uit elkaar gehaald worden! Maar de traagheid is ook een keuze. Met meerdere oorlogen die nu aan de gang zijn, is dit een periode waarin we op politiek, artistiek en menselijk vlak onze houvast kwijtraken. We willen niet te snel gaan, we willen wat afstand tot ons onderwerp en onze geschiedenis creëren.

Tot slot: we hadden het er eerder al over dat de twee werken getoond worden tijdens MOUSSEM CITIES, dat zijn aandacht dit jaar op de stad Damascus richt. Kunnen jullie zeggen wat deze stad voor jullie betekent of symboliseert?

WA: We werken niet letterlijk rond Damascus, maar de toestand en de geschiedenis van de stad worden wel weerspiegeld in de plaatsen en de verhalen waar we ons op richten.

In Temporary Stay werkten we rond de geschiedenis van drie generaties van een geëmigreerde familie. Het verhaal begint aan het einde van de Eerste Wereldoorlog en gaat verder tot bij de actrice die het op het podium vertelt. Deze geschiedenis gaat ook over ons, over onze banden met onze geboortestad. Het hele team van het stuk is op het podium aanwezig, en flarden van onze geschiedenis worden weerspiegeld in deze tocht, via het onderzoek naar het theater en de onmogelijkheid om dit verhaal van verplaatsingen en zich herhalende breuken te vertellen.

On aurait pu croire que nous étions tous les trois assis à une terrasse. Moi, je buvais du thé, Waël Ali et Chrystèle Khodr allumaient de temps à autre une nouvelle cigarette.

Sauf que des milliers de kilomètres nous séparaient tous les trois. Depuis deux ans, les deux artistes collaborent. La distance et les retards que celle-ci entraîne font partie de leur processus de travail, mais ils ne le vivent pas forcément de manière négative.

Lors du festival MOUSSEM CITIES: Damascus, ils présentent leurs deux premières réalisations, Temporary Stay et I once entered a garden.

Ce qui est marquant dans les deux œuvres que vous allez présenter lors du festival MOUSSEM CITIES: Damascus, c’est qu’il s’agit de l’amorce d’un moment très spécifique et intime.

CK : Je crois que beaucoup d’artistes commencent à partir de questions très personnelles. Temporary Stay prend pour point de départ une cassette que j’avais trouvée il y a vingt ans chez ma mère. Mon oncle l’avait envoyée de Suède à mon père à Beyrouth en 1976, et c’était la première fois qu’il donnait de ses nouvelles depuis qu’il avait fui la guerre avec sa femme et ses deux enfants. En 2015, Waël et moi nous nous connaissions à peine.

Lui avait vu mon spectacle Beyrouth Sépia au festival Sens Interdits à Lyon et moi j’avais vu sa pièce Je ne m’en souviens plus à Beyrouth. Quand j’ai décidé de travailler sur cette cassette, je lui ai écrit. Je voulais travailler sur cette cassette et je voulais le faire avec lui. Waël a une sorte de pudeur dans son approche artistique et j’étais certaine que je pouvais lui confier cette histoire personnelle.

Cette cassette est donc effectivement personnelle, mais elle n’est pas si intime que ça.

Au Liban, pendant la guerre, les gens s’envoyaient beaucoup de cassettes audio pour se donner des nouvelles. C’était une connexion entre ceux qui étaient restés sur place et ceux qui avaient émigré. On a tous des liens particuliers avec notre passé et quelque part, on est tous quelque part des déplacés. Notre collaboration autour de ce projet a fait que l’histoire de la cassette a pris une autre dimension. La recherche s’est surtout tournée vers des questions liées au théâtre : comment faire du théâtre aujourd’hui ? Et comment réunir la réflexion de deux personnes qui ont vécu cette histoire différemment, parce qu’ils ont un passé personnel et politique très différent ?

Que signifiait cette cassette pour vous, Waël ?

WA : Quand j’ai écouté la cassette pour la première fois, je l’ai immédiatement trouvée saisissante. Pour plusieurs raisons. Ça rappelle un temps lointain, un temps où l’image n’était pas prédominante. Lorsqu’on était petits, dans les années 80, on écoutait des chaînes de radio plus qu’on ne regardait la télé. Et puis, c’est une histoire particulière et très commune à la fois. Au Liban, les migrants partis pendant la guerre civile enregistraient leurs voix pour s’envoyer des nouvelles. Ensuite, travailler avec un média audio contraste avec la guerre actuelle, où il y a saturation d’images.

La guerre en Syrie produit une surexposition d’images. Pourtant on ne voit pas grandchose. Ce qui m’intéressait aussi, c’est que c’était une actrice qui allait porter à la scène sa propre histoire, ce qui permettait une interrogation sur la performance et le jeu d’acteur.

Au cours du processus de travail, la question de la présence scénique réelle à côté de ces voix venant du passé était centrale. Ce sont des présences qui se questionnent et qui se contaminent en quelque sorte.

Après les réflexions sur le théâtre dans Temporary Stay, votre deuxième collaboration, I once entered a garden, n’est pas un spectacle de théâtre, mais une installation.

Ce changement formel est-il la conséquence de cette interrogation ?

CK : Pas forcément. I once entered a garden part essentiellement des interrogations de Bissane Al Charif, notre scénographe de Temporary Stay. Elle avait déjà créé deux installations autour de thématiques personnelles, que ce soit Mémoire(s) de femme, sa première œuvre, ou Sham, la deuxième. Bissane y interroge le rapport au corps, en particulier en période de grands bouleversements et/ou d’exil. Comment raconter nos premières expériences sensorielles ? Comment reconstituer les souvenirs liés au corps, surtout quand les lieux de la mémoire ne sont plus accessibles ?

WA : La forme de l’installation vient donc de Bissane. Elle était particulièrement appropriée dans la mesure où elle permet un rapport plus intime ou plus personnel entre le spectateur, l’espace et les histoires. Les spectateurs « rencontrent » ces histoires et interagissent avec elles.

Dans l’installation, vous avez orienté les questions corporelles de Bissane vers un moment très précis.

CK : À partir des questions de Bissane, nous avons cherché un langage commun pour traiter du sujet. Nous avons ensuite mené des interviews avec des personnes de plusieurs générations. Ces entretiens se centraient sur leurs premières expériences sexuelles et émotionnelles. Les témoins venaient des pays voisins qui ont connu plusieurs guerres ou l’occupation : le Liban, la Syrie, la Palestine et l’Irak. Ce lien entre l’histoire et le lieu est très important. Si on pense à Bagdad dans les années 80, on pensera à l’embargo, au gaz lacrymogène, mais pas à un jeune homme qui s’adonne à du sexe par téléphone dans une grande maison. Le témoin irakien habitait dans une immense maison, avec le téléphone dans le salon. Son seul souci était de trouver un moyen d’avoir des conversations téléphoniques érotiques alors que toute la maisonnée passait dans le salon ! Et sa grande tragédie était qu’il ne voyait jamais les filles qu’il avait en ligne, il ne pouvait que les entendre. Chez la dame libanaise de 57 ans qui témoigne, le lieu est inévitablement présent. Elle raconte qu’à l’époque où l’armée israélienne a envahi Beyrouth, en 1982, elle a vu la mort de près, mais qu’au lieu de penser à la guerre, elle pensait à avoir des relations sexuelles sans perdre sa virginité. « Au lieu de profiter de la vie. Comme j’étais bête ! ». Le plus jeune témoin vient de Syrie et ses souvenirs remontent à la période de paix. Elle essaie de s’approprier pour une dernière fois ce moment de paix. Elle se rend compte que plus le temps passe, plus de la guerre s’éloigne, plus les gens parviennent à parler de leurs corps. Elle espère qu’un jour, elle aussi sortira de sa maison, entrera dans un jardin, y fumera une cigarette et se réappropriera son histoire et son corps.

Parfois, quand le mot « guerre » figure dans une phrase, il aspire tout. Bizarrement, les moments intimes relatés dans I once entered a garden, qui se déroulent pourtant en période de guerre, voire de guerres consécutives en Irak, ou sous l’occupation israélienne, ces moments restent malgré tout vraiment tendres.

Dans cette installation, ce sont principalement des femmes qui témoignent. Est-ce un choix délibéré ou est-ce simplement plus facile d’obtenir leurs histoires ? Et pourquoi avez-vous choisi de quand même ajouter un homme parmi les témoins ?

CK : Nous n’avions pas l’intention de travailler sur des témoignages de femmes uniquement. Nous avons effectué plusieurs entretiens avec des personnes très différentes et parmi 14

ces entretiens nous avons opéré une sélection d’histoires reliées par un fil très sensible.

C’était important pour nous d’avoir le témoignage d’un homme qui a vécu son adolescence au début des années 90 à Bagdad. Quand on écoute ces témoignages, on se rend facilement compte que les répressions sociales s’exercent aussi bien sur les hommes que les femmes, certes de manières différentes. Des répressions et des censures qui s’exercent avant tout sur le corps, qu’il soit féminin ou masculin. De là où je viens, être un homme est aussi difficile qu’être une femme.

Quel effet cela vous fait-il de présenter les deux œuvres en même temps pour la première fois ? Y a-t-il selon vous une relation entre les deux œuvres ?

CK : Nous n’avions pas l’intention de créer deux œuvres qui se font écho. Ce sont deux formes différentes, une pièce et une installation. S’il y a continuité, c’est dû au fait que ce sont les mêmes personnes qui ont créé les deux projets.

Moi, ça me touche beaucoup que les deux travaux soient présentés en même temps pour la première fois dans le cadre du MOUSSEM CITIES: Damascus. Je considère que c’est une grande chance d’avoir pu travailler ensemble sur deux projets, malgré la distance géographique, qui donne un rythme spécifique au processus et qui ralentit parfois le travail.

Nous avons pu trouver un langage artistique commun qui peut porter nos questionnements et notre pratique théâtrale.

La distance ralentit le processus de travail, mais ne permet-elle pas d’avoir plus de temps pour réfléchir au travail ?

WA : La lenteur permet de repenser les choix et les décisions, essayer d’autres chemins et offre la possibilité de produire des textes appropriés pour s’en défaire après ! Mais la lenteur est aussi un choix. Avec plusieurs guerres en cours, c’est une période de perte de repères sur le plan politique, artistique et humain. Nous ne voulons pas aller trop vite, nous essayons de prendre quelque distance de notre sujet et de nos histoires.

Pour conclure, comme déjà mentionné précédemment, les deux œuvres sont présentées lors du festival MOUSSEM CITIES qui se focalise cette année sur la ville de Damas.

Pourriez-vous nous dire ce que cette ville signifie, symbolise pour vous ?

WA : Nous ne travaillons pas littéralement autour de la ville de Damas, mais sa condition et son histoire sont reflétées dans les lieux et les récits que nous présentons. Dans Temporary Stay, nous avons travaillé sur l’histoire d’une famille émigrée qui s’étend sur trois générations : l’histoire commence à la fin de la Première Guerre mondiale et se prolonge à ce jour et à l’actrice qui la raconte sur scène. Ce récit parle aussi de nous, de nos rapports à nos villes natales. Toute l’équipe de la pièce est présente sur scène et des bribes de nos histoires se retrouvent dans le miroir de cette traversée, en passant par l’interrogation sur le théâtre et sur l’impossibilité de raconter cette histoire de déplacements et de ruptures répétitives.

IN THE WAR IN SYRIA THERE IS AN EXCESS OF IMAGES, AND YET WE DO NOT SEE VERY MUCH. A CONVERSATION WITH CHRYSTÈLE KHODR & WAËL ALI

It was almost as though there were three of us sitting together on a terrace. I drank tea, while Waël Ali and Chrystèle Khodr occasionally lit another cigarette. The only difference was that we were all thousands of kilometres apart. The two artists started collaborating two years ago. Distance and the attendant delays are part of their process and that is by no means a purely negative experience. They will present their first two works at MOUSSEM CITIES: Temporary Stay and I once entered a garden.

It is striking that the two works that you will present during the MOUSSEM CITIES: Damascus festival are both based on a very specific and intimate moment.

CK: I think a lot of artists’ work begins with very personal questions. Temporary Stay is based on a tape that I found at my mother’s house twenty years ago. My uncle has sent this tape from Sweden to my father in Beirut in 1976; it was the first time he had been in touch since fleeing the war with his wife and two children. In 2015, Waël and I hardly knew each other. He saw my production Beyrouth Sépia during the Sens Interdits festival in Lyon and I saw his piece Je ne m’en souviens plus in Beyrouth. When I decided to work on this tape, I wrote him I wanted to work on the tape and I wanted to do it with him. Waël has a kind of modesty and discretion in his artistic approach, and I was sure that I could trust him with this very personal story.

This tape is thus definitely personal, but it is not so intimate. During the war in Lebanon, people often sent one another audio cassettes with their news. It was a far for people who had stayed and those who had emigrated to stay in touch. We all have particular connections to our past, and we are all in some way displaced. Our collaboration on this project has made the story of the tape take on a new dimension. Our exploration focused mainly on questions about the theatre: how to make theatre today. And how to bring together the reflections of two people who have lived this story in a different way because they each have a very different personal and political past.

What does this tape mean to you, Waël?

WA: The first time I listened to the tape, I was immediately struck by it. And for various reasons. It recalls a distant past; a time that was not yet dominated by images. When we were young in the 80s, we listened to the radio much more than we watched TV. So this is a very particular story, but at the same time, it is very common. In Lebanon, the migrants who left during the civil war recorded their voices, so they could send each other news.

Working with an audio medium is a strong contrast with the current war, which is saturated by images.

In the war in Syria there is an excess of images, and yet we do not see very much.

I was also interested by the idea that she is an actress who would perform her own story, which allowed us to raise questions about performance and acting itself.

While creating the work, a central question revolved around real stage presence 18

juxtaposed with these voices from the past. These are presences that question and crosscontaminate one another in some way.

After your reflections on theatre itself in Temporary Stay, your second collaboration, I once entered a garden, is not a theatre production but an installation. Is this formal change the result of your questioning?

CK: Not particularly. I once entered a garden largely emerged from the questions of Bissane Al Charif, our scenographer on Temporary Stay. She had already created two installations that were also based on personal themes: her first work, entitled Mémoire(s) de femme, and the second called Sham. Bissane questions the relationship we have with our body, and especially in times of dramatic change or exile. How do we talk about our first sensory experiences? How do we reconstruct the memories associated with our bodies, especially when the places of these memories are no longer accessible?

WA: The form of the installation thus came from Bissane, but it was also more appropriate for this work. It allows for a more intimate or more personal relationship between the viewer, the space, and the stories. The viewers “encounter” these stories and interact with them.

In the installation, you guided Bissane’s questions about the body to a very precise moment.

CK: Inspired by Bissane’s questions, we started looking for a common language with which to speak about this subject and we started conducting interviews with people of various ages. These conversations focused on their first sexual and emotional experiences.

Our interviewees came from various neighbouring countries that have suffered under different wars or occupation: Lebanon, Syria, Palestine, and Iraq. The connection between history and place is very important. When you think about Baghdad in the 80s, you might think about the embargo or tear gas, but you wouldn’t think about a boy having phone sex in a big house. Our Iraqi interviewee lived in an enormous mansion and the telephone was in the living room. So his only worry was how to have erotic telephone conversations when everybody was passing through the living room! The great tragedy was that he never saw the girls. He only ever heard their voices on the telephone. Place is also unavoidably present in the case of our 57-year-old Lebanese interviewee. She told us: “When the Israeli army invaded Beirut in ’82, I saw death up-close but instead of thinking about the war, I was thinking about having sex without losing my virginity, instead of making the most of life.

How stupid I was!” Our youngest interviewee came from Syria, and her memories go back to before the war. She is trying to recapture this moment of peace one last time. She realizes that the more time passes, the further away people are from the moment of war and the more they can talk about their bodies. She hopes that one day she too can leave her house, enter a garden, smoke a cigarette, and reclaim her story and her body.

Sometimes, when we put the word “war” in a sentence, this word “war” dominates everything. Bizarrely, in I once entered a garden these intimate moments that happened in a period of war remain genuinely tender, even if they occurred during the Israeli occupation or the successive wars in Iraq...

Most of the testimonials in this installation are from women. Was this a deliberate choice or was it easier to find their stories? And why did you decide to include the testimony of one man?

CK: We did not intend to work only with the testimonies of women. We had many conversations with very different people, and from all these conversations, we chose the stories that were connected by a very sensitive thread. It was important to us to include the testimony of a man who spent his adolescence in Baghdad in the early 90s. Listening to these testimonies, it is clear that social repression is exerted both on men and women, though in different ways. Repression and censure are exerted above all on the body, whether the body is feminine or masculine. Where I am from, being a man is as difficult as being a woman.

What is it like for you to present the two works at the same time for the first time? And do you see any connection between the two works?

CK: It was not our intention to make two works that echo one another. These are two different artistic forms, one play and one installation. If there is a continuity, it is due to the fact that the same people created both projects.

I am very touched by the fact that both works will be presented at the same time as part of MOUSSEM CITIES: Damascus. I consider myself very fortunate to have been able to work together on two projects despite the geographical distance, which imposes a certain rhythm on the process and which slows down the work sometimes. We were able to find a shared artistic language through which to express our questions and our current theatre practice.

I imagine that the distance slows down the process, but allows you more time to reflect on the work.

WA: The slowness allows you to rethink choices and decisions, to try other possibilities, and to write texts only to rewrite them later on! But slowness is also a choice. With several wars being fought currently, this is a period of loss from a political, artistic, and human perspective. We do not want to go too fast because we are trying to create a bit of distance from our subject and our stories.

To conclude, as already mentioned, the two works will be presented as part of the MOUSSEM CITIES festival, which this year is focused on the city of Damascus.

Could you tell us what this city means/symbolizes for you?

WA: We do not literally work on the city of Damascus, but its current state and its history are reflected in the places and the narratives that we address. In Titre Provisoire, we worked on the story of a three-generation immigrant family. The story begins at the end of the First World War and continues right up to the actress who is telling the story onstage. This story is also about all of us and about our relationships with the cities of our birth. Every member of the team involved in the play is present on stage, and pieces of all our stories are to be found in the representation of this journey, through the exploration of the theatre itself and the impossibility of telling this story of displacement and repetitive rupture.

Het stormt in Ierland, de internetverbinding slaagt er niet in stand te houden en dus schakelen we van Skype over naar een WhatsAppgesprek. Sinds Els Dietvorst op het Ierse platteland woont, is haar leven veel meer onderhevig aan de wetten van de natuur. Storm en wateroverlast kunnen een rotte oogst en zieke dieren betekenen. Het gebrek aan WiFi, is er slechts een detail van.

De menselijke kwetsbaarheid, de relatie met de natuur en al wat ons omringt, stond altijd al centraal in Dietvorsts werk, maar sinds Ierland gaat haar leven een directere dialoog aan met de dood. En als ‘levenskunstenaar’ krijgt dit ook een neerslag in haar werk: in februari presenteert Dietvorst de première van haar eerste theatervoorstelling MEMENTO MORI!IROM OTNEMEM. Hoe komt het dat de dood zo’n prominente rol speelt in je werk?

Ik ben altijd al geïnteresseerd geweest in het dagelijkse leven, de dood hoort daar ook bij. Maar sinds ik in 2010 naar Ierland verhuisd ben, is de dood een pak aanweziger geworden in mijn leven. Op het platteland word je voortdurend geconfronteerd met dingen die sterven, transformeren of verdwijnen.

Ik bedoel niet enkel dieren of planten, deze nacht is er ook dijk gebroken door het noodweer. Het zorgt ervoor dat je je veel sterfelijker en vergankelijker voelt, maar doet je respect voor moeder natuur ook groeien. Er zit iets cyclisch en oers in.

Twee jaar geleden stierf mijn broer. Toen kwam de dood opnieuw heel dicht, ditmaal op intermenselijk vlak. Het vormde het vertrekpunt voor Drijfhout, een van de twee monologen waarop MEMENTO MORI! gestoeld is. Als je geen religie hebt om zo’n gebeurtenis te verwerken, moet je andere manieren zoeken. En voor mij is dat onder andere mijn kunst en vooral het schrijven.

Een ‘Memento Mori’ is ook waarschuwing: ‘besef dat je sterfelijk bent!’ Naar wie richt je deze titel?

Mensen en vooral kunstenaars zijn heel ijdel. Soms vergeten we hoe belangrijk nederigheid is.

We zouden onszelf minder als het centrum van aandacht moeten zien en meer respect tonen voor wat rondom ons leeft en gebeurt. Als je dat doet, accepteer je de dood gemakkelijker als een deel van het leven.

Je bent voornamelijk gekend als beeldend kunstenaar, je maakt tekeningen, sculpturen, films.

Vanwaar kwam de nood om dingen in louter woorden uit te drukken, in plaats van met beelden?

Als filmmaker kan je veel vatten, maar niet alles. Dat merkte ik toen ik tussen 2006 en 2010 samenwerkte met de Kameroenees ACM (‘Art-Coeur-Merci’). Ik maakte verschillende films over en met hem, maar ik raakte gefrustreerd omdat ik niet gezegd kreeg wat ik wou. Op een gegeven moment ben ik aan het schrijven geslagen. Het resultaat was de monoloog Ik ga naar mijn kippen, die ook verwerkt zit in de voorstelling. Ik vind dat ik met deze tekst dichter op de waarheid zit. En dat is toch wat je als documentairemaker en kunstenaar wil: op de huid van je onderwerp zitten en zo dicht mogelijk tegen de waarheid aanleunen.

Wat kreeg je niet gezegd met de camera, dat je wel in woorden kon vatten?

Hoe verschrikkelijk vijandig de maatschappij staat tegenover een grote zwarte man, die niets misdeed, die gewoon in een andere wereld leefde. Hij deed niemand iets kwaads en toch werd hij overal weggejaagd. Het schrijven was voor mij ook een manier om te verwerken wat ik rond mij heb gezien in een grootstad. Zo werd Ik ga naar mijn kippen voor mij ook een afscheid van Brussel, van de stad tout court. Dat verwerkingsaspect is bij de andere monoloog ook duidelijk aanwezig. Ik denk niet dat ik over mijn broer een film had kunnen maken. De ervaring kan ik wel in die tekst kwijt.

Je vond niet enkel een nieuwe uitlaatklep in het schrijven, je laat de teksten nu ook opvoeren in een theatervoorstelling.

Voor Ik ga naar mijn kippen had ik oorspronkelijk een luisterspel in gedachte. Ik ben een absolute radiofreak. Ik luister graag naar stem, naar theater of zelfs naar een voetbalmatch op de radio. Het feit dat je zelf het beeld moet vormen en je zicht even moet uitschakelen, vind ik heel interessant. In de

monoloog rond ACM verwerkte ik daarom veel ritmische en muzikale aspecten. De eerste keer dat ik de tekst opgevoerd hoorde, was echter pas vorig jaar op het Kunstenfestivaldesarts. Ik toonde videowerk over ACM en een vriendin van me – Angelique Wilkie – bracht de monoloog in het Engels. En toen besefte ik dat die tekst eigenlijk nog beter is als hij live uitgesproken wordt! Toen kreeg ik van Kaaitheater de opdracht een tweede monoloog te schrijven, om die samen met Ik ga naar mijn kippen tot een voorstelling te verwerken.

In 2015 werd ik uitgenodigd op de Moskoubiënnale voor Hedendaagse Kunst en daar heb ik gewerkt aan Skull 3, een gigantische schedelsculptuur. In die periode was mijn broer heel erg ziek.

Het was heel confronterend om aan dit kunstwerk, een schedel, te werken, terwijl mijn broer op sterven lag. Die combinatie van kunst bedrijven, een creatie delen, en mijn broer die aan het sterven was, daar gaat Drijfhout over.

Komen er ook sporen van die beeldende kunstwerken terug in de opvoering van de monologen?

Nee, ik doe dat niet graag, zo ‘laten zien wat je hoort’, het mystieke is belangrijk. Bij I watched the white dogs of dawn, een film over Ierse vissers, splitste ik de film in twee delen: het eerste deel bevatte enkel beelden, het tweede enkel ‘talking heads’. Heel wat mensen vroegen me achteraf waarom ik geen beelden tussen die interviews gezet had. Maar voor mij klopt dat niet, dat zou te letterlijk, te direct worden. Je moet als luisteraar en kijker dingen kunnen verbinden in je eigen hoofd. En met die monologen is dat hetzelfde: ik spreek over dingen, maar ik laat ze daarom niet zien.

Er zit trouwens veel herhaling in de monologen, omdat ik soms denk dat we te weinig luisteren.

Herhaling heeft een ongelooflijke kracht om emoties te triggeren. Door te blijven herhalen komt het veel krachtiger over. Het is een beetje zoals de muziek van Arvo Pärt of Philip Glass.

Wat interessant is aan de lange trajecten die je rond eenzelfde onderwerp opzet, is dat je verschillende afstanden creëert tussen jezelf en het onderwerp. In de fictiefilm As long as the blackbird sings is alle aandacht gericht op ACM, die wordt uitgebeeld door een acteur. In Ik ga naar mijn kippen sta je zelf als verteller/schrijver heel centraal.

Ik werk sowieso altijd aan lange projecten. Als ik een onderwerp zoals ACM aansnijd, dan wil ik dat langs alle kanten bekijken en er veel tijd voor nemen. Die tijd is belangrijk om echt te kunnen begrijpen wat er aan het gebeuren is. En hoe dichter ik uiteindelijk kom bij ‘de waarheid’ van dat onderwerp, hoe beter het mij ligt en hoe beter daardoor ook het artistieke werk wordt.

Ook de andere monoloog zit in een langdurig project en hangt samen met Skull 3. Tegelijk komen in mijn werk altijd dezelfde thematieken voor: de kwetsbaarhieid van de mens, la condition humaine, het egocentrisme van de mens, de kapitalistische wereld waar we slaaf van zijn, maar ook de migrantenproblematiek. Die was deel van ACMs verhaal en zit ook hierin vervat. Skull 3 heb ik namelijk opgebouwd met een groep migranten uit Oezbekistan en Tadjikistan en twee andere kunstenaars. Uiteindelijk hebben we beslist om niet meer enkel mijn naam als maker te gebruiken, maar om het op te dragen aan iedereen die had meegewerkt. We hadden de sculptuur samen gemaakt, er samen betekenis aan gegeven en iedereen voelde zich er in thuis. Ieder had voor zich aanknopingspunten met het werk gevonden: de geur van verbrand hout deed iemand denken aan zijn grootmoeder, de leem die we gebruikten deed een ander denken aan het huis dat hij ooit gebouwd had. Al deze kleine elementen vormen samen een soort van collectief geheugen van de sculptuur. Het mooie aan dit werkproces is dat ik merkte hoe je kunst kan maken als een middel om te communiceren met elkaar en dingen te delen.

En om totaal grenzeloos te denken.

Ik werk graag in samenwerkingsverband. Ik geef mijn werk graag uit handen om te zien wat iemand anders ermee doet. Ook nu met Dirk [Roofthooft] en Aurelie [Di Marino]: zij hebben hun eigen karakter en voegen door hun persoonlijke aanpak een extra dimensie toe aan de teksten. Het is een beetje zoals een tattoo. Als je een tattoo laat zetten, vertrek je van een eigen tekening. Maar het is uiteindelijk de interpretatie van de tattoo-artiest die op je lichaam belandt.

Kunst en leven gaan voor jou samen, zeg je regelmatig. We hebben het nu altijd al gehad over de ‘memento mori’ in relatie tot het leven en de dood. Maar wat zou die titel voor jou kunnen betekenen in relatie tot kunst?

Wel, ik denk niet meer dat kunst de wereld kan redden, wat ik vroeger wel dacht. Maar ik denk dat kunst een steentje kan bijdragen om anders in de wereld te staan en de blik van mensen te wijzigen.

Het is niet alleen maar creëren, het heeft ook te maken met energieën en dynamieken, met echt op andere manieren naar dingen kijken. Creativiteit is een basiskenmerk van ons zijn. Kunst is belangrijk, net zoals eten en drinken, we hebben fantasie nodig om te overleven. Voor mij is kunst eigenlijk een levensfilosofie. Het is ook een manier om te delen, om een dialoog aan te gaan, om andere opinies te horen. Gewapend met kunst zijn we alerter en komen we minder bedrogen uit.

How can we be inspired by the paradox that as soon as you attempt to approach reality in a documentary way, it immediately evaporates and mutates? How can we take our responsibility for mechanisms that determine what can or may be observed, seen, heard, said, thought, made, or done? And how do documentary makers themselves deal with their own positions (of power) and blind spots?

The School of Speculative Documentary is an initiative of Belgian photographers Max Pinckers and Michiel De Cleene, theatre-maker Thomas Bellinck and filmmaker An van Dienderen. Together, they founded a research group at the KASK in Ghent, which functions as an interdisciplinary meeting space to question the documentary act. During this symposium, the space will unfold in the Kaaistudios. Through artistic presentations and conversations, makers will talk about uncertainty and guesswork, to come to terms with the irreparable defects in their work and messy reality.

In Crash Park schrijft theatermaker Philippe Quesne zijn eigen robinsonade. Wanneer de overlevenden uit een gecrasht vliegtuig kruipen, ontmoeten ze het bizarre bestiarium van een verlaten eiland. In het eerste deel van deze solo voor danseres Bahar Temiz onderzoekt Vanrunxt de kracht en de mogelijke betekenis van beweging via de herinnering. In het tweede deel vecht Bahar tegen een vertraagde ‘disco-drone’: een scène als één lichtflits die duurt en blijft duren.

Which movements or fragments of movements does a dancer remember after years of training and performance experience? In the first part of this solo for dancer Bahar Temiz, Vanrunxt explores the power and the possible significance of movement through memory. In the second part, Bahar fights a decelerated ‘disco-drone’: a scene in one flash of light that does not stop.

In lostmovements – een solo voor Jan – gaan ze op zoek naar verloren en vergeten bewegingen.

Marc Vanrunxt was there in the early eighties, at the cradle of the innovative dance wave in Flanders. A few generations later, Jan Martens is adding great verve to the succession and continuation of this wave. In lostmovements – a solo for Jan – they explore lost and forgotten movements.
