En dat alles in 11 dimensies, met 11 fabels, in zes keer 11 minuten. Na de première tijdens het Kunstenfestivaldesarts 2017 herneemt schrijver, filosoof en verhalenverteller Pieter De Buysser de planetariumvoorstelling een heel seizoen lang: iedere 11de van de maand, om 11 na 8.

Jed Martin – hoofdpersonage uit Michel Houellebecqs De kaart en het gebied – werd in 1975 geboren in de buurt van Parijs. Op zijn veertigste schrijft hij een brief aan zijn dode moeder. Ze was zo oud als hij nu, toen ze besliste uit het leven te stappen. De combinatie van zijn woorden en zijn beeldend werk vormen een indringend zelfportret van een hedendaags kunstenaar.

Jed Martin – le personnage principal du roman La carte et le territoire de Michel Houellebecq – est né en 1975 en région parisienne. À quarante ans, il écrit une lettre à sa mère défunte.

Elle avait son âge actuel quand elle s’est suicidée. La combinaison des mots et des œuvres plastiques constitue un autoportrait pénétrant d’un artiste contemporain.

MON 24/09 20:30 DIDIER ERIBONFR Conversation #1 In zijn boek Terug naar Reims combineert socioloog en filosoof Didier Eribon een autobiografische vertelling met een krachtige, sociologische analyse.

Nadat zijn vader is overleden, keert de schrijver terug naar zijn geboortestad Reims. Hij herontdekt er de Franse arbeiderswereld die hij dertig jaar eerder achter zich liet. Nu bijt Eribon de spits af in een reeks avondvullende lezingen en gesprekken die doorheen het seizoen 2018–2019 loopt.

Dans son livre Retour à Reims, Didier Eribon combine un récit autobiographique avec une analyse sociologique puissante. Après le décès de son père, l’écrivain retourne dans sa ville natale de Reims. Il y redécouvre le monde ouvrier qu’il a quitté trente ans auparavant. Didier Eribon est le premier hôte d’une série de conférences et de discussions de pleine soirée qui se tiendront tout au long de la saison 2018–2019.

Ophelia comes to Brooklyn is een theatertekst die Antje Katcher in 1982 schreef. In 1967 emigreerde ze als 20-jarige van een klein Duits stadje naar New York. Bij haar overlijden in 2014 liet ze een erfenis achter voor haar nicht: Katja Dreyer. Nu, in de enscenering van Ophelia comes to Brooklyn, proberen drie acteurs dat theaterstuk én het leven van Antje zelf te ontcijferen.

Ophelia comes to Brooklyn is a theatre script that Antje Katcher wrote in 1982. In 1967, when she was 20 years old, she emigrated from a small German town to New York City.

When she died in 2014, she left an inheritance for her niece: Katja Dreyer. Now, by staging Ophelia comes to Brooklyn, three actors are attempting to decipher that play ánd Antje’s life itself.

SAT 29/09 20:30 LISABOA HOUBRECHTS/KUIPERSKAAI & TONEELHUISBE Hamlet

La jeune metteuse en scène Lisaboa Houbrechts s’attaque à Hamlet. Elle opte pour une perspective féminine et donne une place centrale à la relation destructrice entre Hamlet et sa mère, la reine Gertrude. Le parallèle entre le noyau familial de la pièce et la vraie famille sur scène – la membre de la Needcompany Grace Ellen Barkey et ses deux enfants – intensifie l’arc de tension.

De jonge regisseuse Lisaboa Houbrechts gaat de confrontatie aan met Hamlet. Ze kiest voor het vrouwelijke perspectief: de destructieve relatie tussen Hamlet en zijn moeder koningin Gertrude staat centraal. De parallel tussen de familienucleus uit het stuk en de daadwerkelijke familie op scène – Needcompany-lid Grace Ellen Barkey en haar twee kinderen – zet de spanningsboog van het stuk kracht bij.

Vanonder het beton kruipen de moerasplanten naar boven EEN GESPREK MET COLLECTIEF 431

We spreken af met het collectief 431 – bestaande uit Lietje Bauwens en Wouter De Raeve – boven in toren 1 van de WTC-gebouwen aan het Noordstation.

Beneden ligt het Maximiliaanpark. Bussen rijden voorbij, iemand speelt met een autoband. In de toren zitten veel artiesten die betrokken zijn bij het machtsspel tussen projectontwikkelaars, buurtorganisaties, architecturale visies en politiek.

Ook 431 is hier gevestigd, en werkt momenteel aan een docudrama over deze transitie: WTC A Love Story. Tijdens CITY:LAND vullen ze op en rond het Muntplein het tweede deel in van Michiel Vandeveldes Precarious Pavilions-serie.

In plaats van een toren, staat een plein centraal. Maar wie uitzoomt merkt dat overlappingen onvermijdelijk zijn.

Met Precarious Pavilions nodigt Michiel Vandevelde telkens in een andere stad een kunstenaar of collectief uit om mee na te denken over welke architectuur er vandaag nog mogelijk is – terwijl we geteisterd worden door ecologische, economische en sociale crisissen. In Brussel nemen jullie met the new local het tweede paviljoen voor jullie rekening. Wie of wat is die ‘new local’?

Wij zijn geïnteresseerd in hoe we ons lokaal kunnen verhouden tegenover globale en abstracte uitdagingen, zoals klimatologische veranderingen of de gevolgen van kapitalistische machtsmechanismen. Met the new local gaan we op zoek naar een progressieve opvatting van lokaliteit die zich niet laat vangen door de illusie dat je globale problemen op een puur lokale schaal kunt oplossen. Tegelijkertijd is het wel noodzakelijk om je fysiek te kunnen verhouden tegenover die veranderingen. Dit brengt ons bij de notie van ‘ervaring’: hoe kun je deze zowel temporeel als ruimtelijk opentrekken, zodat ook het niet direct aanwezige ervaarbaar wordt? the new local vertrekt vanuit de premisse dat zowel de oorzaak als ons vermogen om oplossingen te bedenken voor huidige precaire situaties is gebaseerd op een westers en mens-gecentreerde ontologie – waarbij de focus op ‘controle’ ligt. In plaats van meteen een nieuw paviljoen te ontwerpen, of een nieuw ruimtelijk voorstel te doen, willen we eerst en vooral een situatie creëren waarin zich een zoektocht kan afspelen naar nieuwe manieren om ook het onzekere en onvoorspelbare te denken en ruimtelijk te ervaren.

Hoe ga je op zoek naar die andere manieren van ervaren?

We nodigen verschillende kunstenaars uit die elk op hun eigen manier de omgeving van het Muntplein proberen te ervaren, door en met hun respectievelijke materiaal. Zo hopen we de plek te benaderen op manieren die vandaag niet gebruikelijk zijn. We willen zo ons steentje bijdragen aan het architecturale veld, want uiteindelijk gaan de Precarious Pavilions daar ook over. Hoe een – lokale – ruimte vorm te geven in – globale – precaire tijden?

Architectuur moet met veel actoren en elementen rekening houden. De mogelijkheid om te speculeren voorbij het gebruikelijke en gekende wordt zo vrij beperkt, omdat er geen plaats is voor echte risico’s. Met the new local – en eigenlijk is dit een rode draad doorheen al onze projecten – maken we een denkoefening vanuit een artistieke en performatieve context, waardoor de benadering van ‘ruimte’ een meer diverse invulling kan krijgen.

Helena Dietrich – één van de kunstenaars die het Muntplein zal verkennen – vertelde over een workshop waarin ze gesprekken moest houden met haar organen. Ons interesseert 9

zo’n benadering, want een andere relatie tot ons lichaam maakt het mogelijk om gestandaardiseerde en beperkende interpretaties van wat een menselijk lichaam is open te breken én te kijken welke invloed die hebben op onze verhouding tot onze omgeving. Denk maar aan de standaarden die Le Corbusier, Ernst Neufert of Henry Dreyfuss ontwikkelden.

Hoe kun je daar voorbij gaan?

Het paviljoen dat tijdens CITY:LAND op het Muntplein staat, zal voor de doorsnee passant niet zichtbaar zijn. Hiermee reageren jullie op het evenementiele karakter dat het Muntplein sinds 2012 heeft gekregen. Waarom is dit zo problematisch volgens jullie?

Een plein dat aangelegd is met oog op events, is an sich niet erg. Maar we hebben wel kritiek op de manier waarop dat vandaag in het centrum van Brussel gebeurt: de stad focust zich op toerisme en wil aan de hand van die events zoveel mogelijk mensen naar de stad lokken, terwijl de stadsbewoners zelf nog maar weinig aandacht krijgen. De resulterende identiteit van het Muntplein wordt volledig bepaald door de twee aangrenzende winkelstraten en het winkelcentrum.

Hoe verhoudt die kritiek zich tot jullie paviljoen, dat je in principe ook als een evenement zou kunnen beschouwen?

Vijf dagen lang driehonderd mensen naar het plein lokken is voor the new local geen optie. Eerst vragen we aan de kunstenaars om overdag ruimtelijke tests uit te voeren, elk vanuit een eigen invalshoek. Die interventies worden gedocumenteerd en ’s avonds voorgesteld in de ruimtes rondom het Muntplein: in de opera, de bibliotheek en misschien ook het administratief centrum van Brussel en de ondergrondse parking. Zo blijft het plein vrij en kunnen de kunstenaars echt uittesten hoe ze de plek aanvoelen en wat er mogelijk is. ’s Avonds nodigen we hen en verschillende gasten uit om de discussie verder te zetten en open te trekken. We hopen op die manier het evenementiele te neutraliseren en ruimte te laten voor rustig en aftastend onderzoek.

Een deel van the new local speelt zich af in Miami. Wat hebben beide steden met elkaar te maken?

Miami is een 21e-eeuwse stad on steroids: kapitalisme ten top, consumentisme alom.

Zaken die we ook zien op het Muntplein – maar dan in overtreffende trap – en die we ten alle koste willen vermijden. De gevolgen van de klimaatopwarming zijn in Miami tegelijk heel aanwezig. De zeespiegel stijgt er zienderogen en er is een duidelijke toename van orkanen. Die gevolgen zijn zo zichtbaar, dat de stad al genoodzaakt is om concreet actie te ondernemen. Het idee dat we alle dreigingen moeten kunnen voorspellen én weten hoe ze te tackelen leeft heel erg, maar beperkt zich tot onze menselijke kennis en ervaring in plaats van te erkennen dat het nodig is om juist van de ecologische situatie te leren. Zo is Miami bijvoorbeeld gebouwd op een moeras – net als Brussel trouwens – en lukt het de stad maar moeilijk het water te onderdrukken. Wanneer in verwaarloosde stadsdelen moerasplanten verschijnen, lijkt de natuur de mens te belagen. Maar dat moeras, de natuur en het inheemse land ligt altijd al onder onderdrukkend beton. Wij zijn geïnteresseerd in die verhouding tussen enerzijds het uitoefenen van controle – of in elk geval de illusie daarvan – en anderzijds de ontwikkeling van een open houding die in staat is mee te groeien met de onzekerheden uit onze omgeving.

Hoe integreren jullie het Miami-verhaal in het Brusselse paviljoen?

Aanvankelijk wouden we naar Miami vliegen om de situatie zelf te onderzoeken en er een reeks interviews over te publiceren. Maar zo’n vlucht is een goed voorbeeld bij uitstek waar het abstracte van klimaatverandering een persoonlijk keuze wordt, en dus besloten we te zoeken naar een alternatieve aanpak. Hoe Miami te ervaren zonder daar fysiek te zijn?

We zochten iets in de lijn met de manier waarop we de kunstenaars het Muntplein laten verkennen. De bedoeling is om activiste/kunstenares Rozalinda Borcila een wandeling te laten uitwerken doorheen de stad, waarin ze de financiële en politieke stromingen blootlegt die de beeldtaal omtrent de klimaatcrisis bepalen en misbruiken. Hoe kun je andere concepten en narratieven ontwikkelen die afstand doen van kolonialistische opvattingen?

Het videomateriaal laten we door kunstenares Naïmé Perrette verbinden met de beelden die ze zelf in Brussel maakt. Deze installatie vormt de scenografie voor zowel de online ruimte als de presentaties ’s avonds.

Vertrekkende vanuit de kritiek op wat het Muntplein vandaag is: wat zou een plein volgens jullie dan wel moeten zijn en bevatten?

We zijn zo gewoon om iets te bekijken vanuit een bepaalde ‘goesting’, dat we de rest errond vaak vergeten. We vinden bepaalde producten zo belangrijk, dat we stilzwijgend akkoord gaan met de erbarmelijke omstandigheden waarin ze geproduceerd worden, of dat er bossen voor tegen de vlakte gaan.

Binnen ons collectief zijn we veel bezig met het ontwikkelen van een integraal denken, dat het grotere plaatje in acht neemt en ziet hoe verschillende sociale constructies met elkaar verweven zijn. Door de globale crisissen kun je eigenlijk niet anders. In veel hedendaagse theorieën komt zo’n inclusieve visie terug: de focus ligt niet langer op enkel de mens, maar ook op niet-menselijke actoren en de onderlinge relaties. Maar uiteindelijk zijn wij wel mensen en heeft het niet veel zin om hier aan voorbij te gaan. De vraag die zich dan opdringt is hoe we als mens zo’n integraal ervaringsvermogen kunnen ontwikkelen. We moeten ons eerst hiermee bezig houden, voordat het mogelijk is om te poneren wat een plein volgens ons moet zijn en hoe het eruit moet zien.

We geloven wel in het potentieel van kunst om deuren te openen naar mogelijkheden die standaardvormen van kennisproductie niet in zich hebben. In plaats van architecten te vragen om workshops te organiseren en ontwerpend onderzoek te laten voeren, selecteren we enkel kunstenaars om naar het plein te kijken en zo een heel andere waaier aan ervaringen aan te reiken. Het architectuurcollectief Parasites 2.0 zal via tekst reageren op de interventies vanuit een ontwerpperspectief, waardoor er reeds een eerste brug verschijnt naar een architecturale interpretatie van ons experiment.

Nous faisons rendez-vous avec le collectif 431 – qui se compose de Lietje Bauwens et Wouter De Raeve – en haut de la tour n° 1 des bâtiments du WTC, à côté de la Gare du Nord et du Parc Maximilien. Des autobus passent, quelqu’un joue avec un pneu de voiture. La tour abrite de nombreux artistes investis dans le champ de tension entre promoteurs immobiliers, organisations de quartier, visions architecturales et décisions politiques. Également établi dans la tour, 431 travaille actuellement à un docudrame sur cette transition : WTC A Love Story.

Pendant CITY: LAND, ils assurent le deuxième volet de la série Precarious Pavilions de Michiel Vandevelde, sur et autour de la Place de la Monnaie.

Au lieu d’une tour, c’est une place publique qui est au cœur du projet.

Mais qui y regarde de plus près, remarque que les chevauchements sont inévitables.

Avec Precarious Pavilions, Michiel Vandevelde invite, chaque fois dans une autre ville, un artiste ou un collectif à réfléchir avec lui aux architectures encore possibles aujourd’hui – alors que nous subissons des crises écologiques, économiques et sociales. À Bruxelles, c’est vous qui vous chargez du deuxième pavillon, the new local. De quoi s’agit-il ?

Nous nous intéressons à la façon dont nous pouvons aborder sur le plan local des défis mondiaux et abstraits, comme les changements climatiques ou les conséquences des mécanismes de pouvoir capitalistes. Avec the new local, nous partons en quête d’une conception progressiste du local qui ne se laisse pas piéger par l’illusion que les problèmes mondiaux peuvent être résolus à une échelle purement locale. En même temps, il est indispensable de pouvoir entretenir une relation physique vis-à-vis de ces changements.

Cela nous amène à la notion « d’expérience » : comment peut-on l’ouvrir aussi bien au niveau temporel que spatial, de sorte que ce qui n’est pas directement présent puisse aussi être perceptible ? the new local prend pour point de départ la prémisse qu’aussi bien la raison d’imaginer des solutions à des situations précaires actuelles que notre capacité à le faire reposent toutes deux sur une ontologie occidentale et centrée sur l’homme, qui met l’accent sur le « contrôle ». Au lieu de créer d’emblée un nouveau pavillon ou d’élaborer une nouvelle proposition spatiale, nous souhaitons avant tout créer une situation qui permette la recherche de nouvelles manières de penser l’incertain et l’imprévisible et de les expérimenter sur le plan spatial.

Comment partez-vous en quête de ces autres manières d’expérimenter ?

Nous invitons différents artistes qui, tous à leur manière, tentent de ressentir, de vivre l’environnement de la Place de la Monnaie à travers leur matériau respectif. Ainsi, nous espérons aborder le lieu selon des modes inhabituels de nos jours. Nous souhaitons contribuer de la sorte au champ architectural, parce qu’en fin de compte c’est aussi de cela que traite Precarious Pavilions. Comment donner corps à un espace – local – en des temps globalement précaires ? L’architecture doit tenir compte de beaucoup d’acteurs et de facteurs. Cela réduit la possibilité de spéculer au-delà de ce qui est habituel et connu, parce qu’il n’y a pas de place pour de véritables risques. Avec the new local – et c’est à vrai dire un fil rouge à travers tous nos projets –, nous faisons un exercice théorique à partir d’un 13

contexte artistique et performatif qui permet d’offrir une teneur plus diverse à l’approche de « l’espace ».

Helena Dietrich – l’une des artistes qui vont explorer la Place de la Monnaie – nous a relaté un atelier lors duquel il lui a fallu mener des conversations avec ses organes. Une telle approche nous intéresse, car une relation différente au corps permet d’étendre les interprétations standardisées et restrictives de ce qu’est un corps humain et d’observer quelle influence celles-ci ont sur le rapport que nous entretenons à notre environnement.

Pensez aux standards que Le Corbusier, Ernst Neufert ou Henry Dreyfuss ont développés.

Comment en faire l’impasse ?

Le pavillon qui se trouve sur la Place de Monnaie durant CITY: LAND ne sera pas visible pour le passant lambda. En cela, vous régissez au caractère événementiel dont la Place de la Monnaie fait l’objet depuis 2012. Pourquoi est-ce si problématique selon vous ?

Le fait qu’une place soit aménagée en vue d’y organiser des événements n’est pas problématique en soi. Mais nous critiquons la manière dont cela se déroule aujourd’hui dans le centre de Bruxelles : la ville se concentre sur le tourisme et souhaite attirer le plus de gens possible à la faveur de ces événements, alors que les habitants ne reçoivent que bien peu d’attention. L’identité de la Place de la Monnaie qui en résulte est entièrement déterminée par deux rues commerçantes avoisinantes et un centre commercial.

Comment cette critique se rapporte-t-elle à votre pavillon, qu’on pourrait en principe aussi considérer comme un événement ?

Attirer cinq jours durant trois cents personnes sur la place n’est pas une option pour the new local. En premier lieu, nous demandons aux artistes d’effectuer des tests spatiaux pendant la journée, chacun à partir de son point de vue personnel. Ces interventions sont documentées et présentées en soirée dans des espaces autour de la Place de la Monnaie : à l’Opéra, à la bibliothèque et peut-être aussi au centre administratif de Bruxelles et dans le parking souterrain. Ainsi, la place reste dégagée et les artistes peuvent vraiment tester la façon dont ils ressentent le lieu et ce qui y est possible. Le soir, nous les invitons, avec d’autres hôtes, à poursuivre et étendre la discussion. De cette façon, nous espérons neutraliser l’aspect événementiel et laisser de la latitude à une recherche sereine et fouillée.

Une partie de the new local se déroule à Miami. Qu’ont ces deux villes en commun ?

Miami est une ville du XXIe siècle sous stéroïdes : capitalisme paroxystique et consumérisme exacerbé. Ce que nous observons aussi Place de la Monnaie – toutes proportions gardées – et que nous voulons éviter à tout prix. Par ailleurs, les conséquences du réchauffement climatique sont très tangibles à Miami : le niveau de la mer monte à vue d’œil et il y a une augmentation manifeste des ouragans. Ces conséquences sont si visibles que la ville a déjà été contrainte d’entreprendre des actions concrètes. L’idée qu’il nous faut pouvoir prédire toutes les menaces et savoir comment s’y attaquer est très actuelle, mais se limite à notre connaissance et nos expériences humaines, au lieu de reconnaître la nécessité de tirer des leçons de la situation écologique. Ainsi, Miami est bâti sur des terres marécageuses – tout comme Bruxelles d’ailleurs – et la ville a beaucoup de mal à contenir l’eau. Lorsque des plantes de marais apparaissent dans des parties délaissées de la ville, on a l’impression que la nature assaille l’être humain. Mais les marais, la nature et la terre de la région sont écrasés sous le béton depuis la fondation de la ville. Nous nous intéressons à ce rapport entre le contrôle – ou en tout cas l’illusion d’exercer un contrôle – d’une part, et le développement d’une attitude ouverte d’autre part, susceptible de s’accroître en parallèle des incertitudes de notre environnement.

Comment intégrez-vous le récit de Miami dans le pavillon bruxellois ?

Initialement, nous voulions nous rendre à Miami pour y analyser nous-mêmes la situation et publier une série d’interviews à ce sujet. Mais ce vol est un parfait exemple de la manière dont l’aspect abstrait du changement climatique devient un choix personnel.

Nous avons donc décidé de chercher une approche alternative. Comment faire l’expérience de Miami sans y être physiquement ? Nous avons cherché quelque chose qui rejoint l’esprit de l’invitation à explorer la Place de la Monnaie que nous avons lancée à des artistes.

L’objectif est que l’activiste/artiste Rozalinda Borcila élabore une promenade à travers la ville dévoilant les mouvements financiers et politiques qui déterminent et utilisent à mauvais escient le langage visuel autour de la crise climatique. Comment développer d’autres concepts et récits qui renoncent aux conceptions colonialistes ? La vidéaste Naïmé Perrette relie le matériel vidéo avec ses propres images réalisées à Bruxelles. Cette installation constitue aussi bien la scénographie de l’espace en ligne que des présentations en soirée.

Prenant pour point de départ la critique de la Place de la Monnaie actuelle : à quels critères devrait répondre une place publique selon vous ?

Nous sommes tellement habitués à considérer les choses à partir d’une certaine envie qu’on en oublie souvent les contours. Nous trouvons certains produits tellement importants que nous souscrivons tacitement aux conditions déplorables dans lesquelles ils sont fabriqués ou que leur fabrication entraîne des déforestations.

Au sein de notre collectif, nous cherchons assidûment à développer une pensée intégrale, qui prenne en considération le tableau complet et perçoive la façon dont les différentes constructions sociales s’imbriquent et interagissent. À vrai dire, les crises mondiales ne nous laissent pas vraiment d’autre choix. Une telle vision inclusive émerge dans bon nombre de théories actuelles : l’accent n’est plus uniquement mis sur l’être humain, mais aussi sur les acteurs non humains et leurs relations mutuelles. Mais en fin de compte, nous sommes bel et bien des humains et ce serait insensé de l’ignorer. La question qui s’impose dès lors est : comment pouvons-nous, en tant qu’être humain, développer une telle faculté d’expérience intégrale ? C’est sur cela qu’il faut se pencher en premier lieu, avant de pouvoir formuler ce à quoi une place publique doit répondre selon nous.

Nous avons toutefois confiance dans le potentiel de l’art à ouvrir des portes vers des ossibilités qui ne sont pas porteuses de formes de production de savoir standardisées.

Au lieu de demander à des architectes d’organiser des ateliers et de commander une recherche en vue de produire un projet, nous sélectionnons des artistes uniquement pour observer la place et offrir de la sorte un tout autre éventail d’expériences. Le collectif d’architecture Parasites 2.0 réagira aux interventions par le biais d’un texte rédigé à partir d’une perspective de projet, ce qui fait qu’un premier pont vers une interprétation architecturale de notre expérience apparaît déjà.

The swamp plants creep up through the cracks in the concrete A CONVERSATION WITH THE 431 COLLECTIVE

We sat down with the 431 collective – which consists of Lietje Bauwens and Wouter De Raeve – high up in Tower 1 of the WTC at North Station.

Maximilian Park lies at the foot of the building. Buses drive past, somebody plays with a car tire. The tower houses many artists who find themselves in the centre of the power game between project developers, local organizations, architectural visions, and politics.

431 is also based here and is currently working on a docudrama about this transition: WTC A Love Story. During CITY:LAND, they will form the second part of Michiel Vandevelde’s Precarious Pavilions series on and around the place de la Monnaie.

Instead of a tower, they will focus on a square. But if you zoom out, you will see that some overlap is inevitable.

For Precarious Pavilions, Michiel Vandevelde invites a different artist or collective in each different city to reflect on the kinds of architecture that are still viable today – while we are plagued by ecological, economic, and social crises. In Brussels, you are presenting the second pavilion, titled the new local. Who or what is this ‘new local’?

We are interested in how we can relate locally to global and abstract challenges, such as climate change or the consequences of capitalist power mechanisms. Along with the new local we explore a progressive conception of localness that does not fall victim to the illusion that you can solve global problems on a purely local scale. At the same time, it is imperative that you are able to relate physically to these changes. This brings us to the notion of ‘experience’: how can we open it up both temporally and spatially, so that it becomes possible to experience the things that are not directly present? the new local is based on the premise that both the causes and our ability to devise solutions for current precarious situations is based on a Western and anthropocentric ontology in which the focus is on ‘control’. Instead of simply designing a new pavilion or presenting a new spatial proposal, we primarily seek to create a situation in which we can stimulate the search for new ways of thinking about the uncertain and the unpredictable and of experiencing it spatially.

How do you search for these new forms of experience?

We invite various artists who attempt to experience the environment of the place de la Monnaie in their own different ways, through and with their respective materials. We thus hope to approach the place in ways that are not currently conventional, and we seek to make our own contribution to the architectural field because that is ultimately what Precarious Pavilions is about. How to coordinate a – local – space in – globally – precarious times? Architecture has to take many different players and factors into account. This limits the possibilities to speculate beyond conventional and known forms because there is no space to take genuine risks. With the new local – and actually, this is a leitmotiv throughout all our projects – we engage in a thought experiment based in an artistic and performative context. We are thus able to diversify the various approaches to ‘space’.

Helena Dietrich – one of the artists who will explore the place de la Monnaie – told us about a workshop in which she had to engage in conversations with her organs. We are interested in such an approach because a different relationship to our body enables us to break open standardized and limiting interpretations of what a human body is and to 18

examine the influences that they have on our relationship with our surroundings. Just think of the standards that Le Corbusier, Ernst Neufert or Henry Dreyfuss developed. How can you ignore those?

The pavilion that will occupy the place de la Monnaie during CITY:LAND will not be visible to the average passer-by. You are thus reacting to the event-focused character that the place de la Monnaie has had since 2012. Why do you think this is problematic?

There is nothing problematic as such with a square being built specifically to host events. But we do have criticisms of the way in which this currently occurs in the centre of Brussels: the city is focused on tourism and aims to use these events to draw as many people as possible to the city, while its residents themselves receive very little attention.

The resulting identity of the place de la Monnaie is thus completely defined by the two adjoining shopping streets and the shopping centre.

How is this critique related to your pavilion, which one might in principle also characterize as an event?

Attracting three hundred people to the square for five days is not an option for the new local. We first ask the artists to conduct spatial tests during the day, each from their own perspective. These interventions will be documented and then presented in the evening in the space around the Muntplein: at the opera, the library, and perhaps also at the administrative centre of Brussels and the underground car park. The square will thus be empty, and the artists can really test how the space feels, and what is possible. In the evening, we will invite them and a range of guests to continue and open up the conversation. We thus hope to neutralize the event-focused character and to create a space for peaceful and exploratory research.

Part of the new local is set in Miami. What do these two cities have in common?

Miami is a 21st-century city on steroids: capitalism rules and there is consumerism everywhere. We see the same thing on the place de la Monnaie – but in an excessive measure – which is something we seek to avoid at all costs. At the same time, the consequences of climate change are very palpable. Sea levels are rising and there has been a clear increase in the number of hurricanes. These consequences are so visible that the city has been forced to take concrete action. The idea that we must be able to predict any threat and know how to tackle it is very prevalent, but there are also neighbourhoods and spaces – some have no alternative – that continue to adapt to the urgency and thus learn from the ecological situation that confronts them. The idea is to ask activist/artist Rozalinda Borcila to map out a walk across the city in which she exposes financial and political movements that define and manipulate the visual language around the climate crisis. How can you develop other concepts and narratives that reject colonial perspectives?

Artist Naïmé Perrette will then juxtapose the video footage with the photos that she takes in Brussels. The resulting installation will be the scenography for both the online space and the evening presentations.

We are interested in the relationship between on the one hand, the exercise of control – or at least the illusion of it – and on the other, with the development of an open attitude that is capable of growing along with the uncertainties in our environment.

How do you integrate the experience of Miami into the pavilion in Brussels?

We initially wanted to fly to Miami to research the situation ourselves and to publish a series of interviews about it. But such a flight is a good example of the abstract character of climate change becoming a personal choice, and we thus opted for an alternative approach.

How could we experience Miami without actually being there physically?

Based on your critique of what the place de la Monnaie is now: what do you think a square should be or what should it contain?

We are so accustomed to looking at things based on a certain ‘desire’ that we often forget everything else that is going on. We consider certain products so important that we tacitly assent to the terrible circumstances in which they are produced, or the fact that forests are felled to make them.

Within our collective, we spend a lot of time developing integral thinking, which considers the bigger picture and analyses how various social constructions are interconnected. Due to all the global crises, it is difficult to do otherwise. Many contemporary theories contain forms of such an inclusive vision: the focus is no longer anthropocentric but is focused on non-human players and factors and their mutual relationships. But ultimately, we are people, and it would be pointless to ignore that fact. The question this raises is how we as people can develop integral forms of experience. This is our primary concern and it is essential before we can claim what a square should be or what it should look like.

We do believe in the potential of art to open doors to possibilities that standard forms of knowledge production do not contain. Instead of asking architects to organize workshops and to conduct design research, we only select artists to come and look at the square and thus to offer us a whole range of different experiences. The architecture collective Parasites 2.0 will respond to the presentations via text from a design perspective, creating a first bridge to an architectural interpretation of our experiment.

A WORK CAN HAVE DEPTH BUT IT NEEDS A CLEAR SURFACE KATE MCINTOSH IN CONVERSATION WITH EVA DECAESSTECKER (KAAITHEATER)

From 23 to 28 October choreographer and artist-in-residence at Kaaitheater Kate McIntosh is presenting three of her pieces in one week: Dark Matter (2009), Worktable (2011), and her latest performance In Many Hands (2016).

Together the works show the evolution that has taken place in McIntosh’ practice: from being a stage animal to creating delicate dramaturgies, from silence to words to sound, but also the appearance of a lot of objects.

We took advantage of the summer break to invite her for an in-depth interview.

Since Dark Matter – created almost a decade ago – your performances have changed radically: how you use the theatre space, the relationship between performer and audience, the role of the performer, the role you give the audience…

How did this evolution start?

I think Dark Matter was the last piece where I really felt that I knew why I was presenting something on stage. The language of stage, being the performer in the middle of it, my relationship with the audience: all these aspects were necessary for what that performance says. After Dark Matter, I become curious about what happens when the performer is no longer the central focus of attention.

Worktable, for example, began with a desire to have no performer and no audience.

Just people in action, with no one watching. It probably differs the most from Dark Matter because it doesn’t tell you explicitly what it’s ‘about’ either. Worktable just creates conditions and makes an invitation – then the visitors enter with their safety gear and tools, and each person develops their own relationship to what they’re doing.

Even the time span is not decided by you?

No, the longest Worktable visit took five hours, but some people are finished in 45 minutes. Addressing this time span was part of my curiosity. Often when you work on stage you direct people’s attention in a very concise way, and I wanted to escape that approach.

So I thought: how can I make something in which I have no control over people’s attention?

So I don’t know what they’re choosing to think about, or how long they’re going to stay.

They decide for themselves in what way they want to relate to Worktable.

On the other hand, in my pieces there is always a strong sense of dramaturgy – which structures how ideas and experience are offered. Dark Matter and In Many Hands look completely different to the audience, but their dramaturgical line is always central. It’s the thing I work on the most and I have a similar approach through all these pieces.

It has been several years since you performed Dark Matter, how will it be for you to get back on stage?

It’s very exotic. I’m a stage animal, I trained for that my whole life, but I’m not on stage very often anymore. It will feel like tasting a food I haven’t tasted for a long time. When you’re on stage, you feel the audience strongly. You have the responsibility to read the room constantly and adjust what you’re doing in relationship to that. But in a piece like In Many Hands, the energy between audience and performer is not the focus. The audience is much more independent and sometimes I’m very surprised by what people say afterwards about their experience.

Although you had something else in mind with In Many Hands, the piece ended up being for theatre stages exclusively. How come it turned out like that?

Yes, when we started making In Many Hands, I wanted it to be adaptable to non-theatre spaces. But in the end, the piece concentrates so much on people’s perception and it heightens their sensibility to everything: light, sound, temperature. So we needed an environment that could provide an immersive experience, almost like a laboratory. A theatre turns out to be the place where you can determine all the conditions for playing with your senses, which isn’t possible elsewhere. Funnily enough, the piece is completely non-theatrical but it needs to be presented on a stage.

On the other hand, Dark Matter is my love letter to theatre and everything I enjoy about it: the staging, the smoke, the glamourous costumes, the music. The audience easily recognises that it is a mix of smoky late-night acts and science TV shows. It echoes other theatre experiences and it references popular culture. This is quite the opposite of In Many Hands: when the audience arrives, they have no idea what to expect and never know what’s going to happen next. The question throughout the whole piece is ‘What is happening here? What am I involved in?’ And not in a bad way: that is actually a very enjoyable, useful question. The performance is structured to embrace ‘not knowing’ and to become curious and go exploring.

How did your perception of the audience, what it is and can do, change over the last decade? Did you discover potentialities in the audience that you never noticed before?

In Many Hands and Worktable seem accessible to people who are not regular art spectators. Often when we tour, the audience is quite mixed and not everyone has much viewing experience, especially in small towns or some festival contexts. And yet I notice that people get very involved, and afterwards feel able to speak about it with confidence. This has been interesting for me because it’s not true of all performance work. Sometimes people exit performances saying ‘I don’t know how to relate to this, I feel unqualified to watch’, and I find that problematic.

I like the quote: ‘A work can have depth but it needs a clear surface’.1 I try to make pieces that are accessible without being simplistic, and are readable from several angles and layers. They should be open to a complexity of different viewings and responses.

Is it the fact that the audience gets another role and is addressed differently that makes Worktable and In Many Hands more accessible?

Maybe, but let’s put it this way: because the formats are not recognizable, I can’t rely on audience members to know what’s going on, so I have to be smart about inviting people in a way that the situation is very clear and available. I can’t make assumptions about what people will understand or how they will behave – as I might in a ‘normal’ stage performance.

I’m not afraid of audience discomfort, but I do think thoroughly about how someone might misunderstand what’s going on, or get lost inside it, or disturb someone else’s experience.

Actually, that’s a fancy way of saying that I try to avoid excluding or alienating people. Otherwise the piece won’t work. This is also another way to say that if it’s inclusive then it’s also accessible.

The other unusual thing is that the subject matter of both Worktable and In Many Hands is actually the audience themselves. This is very different from a piece like Dark Matter which has a ‘topic’ of enquiry and a clear authorial voice. Instead, the ambition of Worktable and In Many Hands is to set up specific – and quite peculiar – conditions for introspection. They invite people to think through physical action. I’m happy about this quality of introspection – even in a communal sense with In Many Hands. Maybe this is also why the pieces are accessible to all kinds of folks: most people are pretty good at being themselves and are often glad to have space and time to quietly think for themselves.

Sound is quite important in your work too. And sound is also your voice which is still present in Dark Matter but has retreated in Worktable and in In Many Hands.

Yes, sound is extremely important to me, often in pretty subtle ways. Dark Matter uses music, but there is also a big layer of sound which is subconscious, things that you would never notice happening but that produce tension and activate your attention. When I do soundchecks, I want to know whether you feel or see the sound as much as you hear it.

For me, sound is a very visceral thing. It tells you where you are in space or it creates a space for you.

Voice work has also been a part of the evolution of my practice. When I was a dancer I didn’t speak onstage, but as soon as I started making my own work it was immediately full of language: I talked an enormous amount! I was fascinated by how you can construct images for people by talking, and you can lie. In a positive way: you can just say things and make them true, at least temporarily. But after Dark Matter, I wished for something that was less in my control as a performance maker. I wanted things to happen without being channelled through me or my words. I wanted to make space for kinds of experience. And that’s why we invite people not to speak during In Many Hands, because you can easily rationalise or frame a situation through language – but if you choose not to speak other possibilities open up.

And to close this conversation, what are you working on at the moment?

I have no idea what shape the next project will take and this is really precious to me, I love not to know. But speaking of voices, I’ve become interested in the non-linguistic possibilities of voice: singing, vocal sounds. I am very interested in the musical aspects but also the physicality and even animality of the voice. And I also think it’s time to work without objects for a while, even though it’s been my focus for the past ten years…

I’m tired of constantly packing and unpacking!

Author and performer Stacy Hardy talks about her life with TBC, about the years before the diagnosis, and about her treatments since.

She combines intimate, personal testimonies with historical archival materials, against the backdrop of political systems still plagued by colonial and systemic racial violence. Together with musicians Neo Muyanga and Nancy Mounir, director Laila Soliman and Hardy also show how vulnerability and disease can initiate resistance and change.

JAN DECORTE/BLOETBE Hamlet 2.0 Jan Decorte neemt opnieuw de draad op van zijn legendarische Hamlet-bewerkingen. In de loop der jaren heeft de eigenzinnige theatermaker en -auteur de Shakespeareklassieker meermaals herschreven, geregisseerd en gespeeld. Versterkt door de jongste generatie theatermakers – dramastudenten Ellis Meeusen en Lisah Adeaga – recycleren hij en Sigrid Vinks de verschillende versies tot opnieuw een Hamletmachine ontstaat, maar dan één van de 21e-eeuw.

Liefde tussen de drie actrices: Lois Brochez, Sara De Roo en Dounia Mahammed. Liefde voor de oneindige schoonheid van de wereld rondom ons. Het tekstmateriaal vertrekt vanuit gesprekken die Tine voerde met kinderen en volwassenen. Maar ook merkwaardige liefdesverhalen uit de geschiedenis en de literatuur krijgen een plek.

Als er één danskunstenaar een monument verdient, dan is het wel de Duitse Valeska Gert (1892-1978). Haar nietsvrezende provocatieve performances, maakten haar tot één van de belangrijkste kunstenaars van haar tijd. Samen met Boglàrka Börcsök vertaalt Eszter Salamon die energie uit het verleden naar het heden. Ze geven het kunsthistorische discours een autobiografisch karakter, en vullen historische gaps op met eigen verbeelding.

S’il y a une artiste de la danse qui mérite un monument, c’est bien l’Allemande Valeska Gert (1892-1978). Ses performances audacieuses et provocantes font l’une des artistes les plus importantes de son époque. Avec Boglàrka Börcsök, Eszter Salamon transpose cette énergie du passé vers le présent.

Elles donnent au discours de l’histoire de l’art un caractère autobiographique et comblent les brèches historiques avec leur propre imagination.

If there is one dance artist that deserves a monument, it is certainly the German Valeska Gert (1892-1978). Her fearless, provocative performances make her one of the most important artists of her time.

Along with Boglàrka Börcsök, Eszter Salamon translates this energy from the past to the present. They give their arthistorical discourse an autobiographic touch and fill historical gaps with their own imagination.

WALTER HUSBE Supersonic Flora In Supersonic Flora, Walter Hus is returning to a number of pivotal pieces from his career and adapting them into brand-new compositions for solo piano. The pieces range from beautiful, radical, and minimalist compositions from the 1980s to more melodious works from the 1990s and a recent jazzy piece that he composed in memory of a friend who died.

De ene keer voeren ze fragiele en intieme duetten op, dan weer ontspint er zich een competitieve krachtmeting. Wat kunnen ze van elkaar leren?

Les univers de l’artiste en résidence Benjamin Vandewalle, de Kobe Wyffels et de Hannah Bekmans ne pourraient être plus éloignés les uns des autres. Ils partent en quête, par le biais du mouvement, de terrains communs et de différences. Ils interprètent par moments des duos fragiles et intimes, à d’autres moments se déploie une épreuve de force compétitive.

KATE MCINTOSHNZ/BE Worktable Worktable is een installatie met verschillende kamers, die je één na één doorloopt. Eens binnen krijg je instructies, uitrusting, veiligheidsbril en materialen waar je mee aan de slag kan. Kate McIntosh legt de hamer klaar, jij doet de rest.

Worktable est une installation composée de plusieurs pièces qu’on traverse une à une. À l’intérieur, on reçoit des instructions, de l’équipement, des lunettes de sécurité et du matériel avec lequel on peut se mettre à l’œuvre. Kate McIntosh prépare le marteau, vous faites le reste !

Geflankeerd door twee onhandige assistenten, staat Kate McIntosh als een hogepriesteres in glitterjurk op scène. Gedurende een soort revue werpen ze zich vol overgave op allerlei huis-tuin-en-keukenexperimenten.

Met hun pseudowetenschappelijk betoog en filosofische bespiegelingen ontmaskeren ze de dilettanten wiens proefondervindelijke bewijsvoeringen – van dat ‘wat ze zeker weten’ – blijven mislukken.

Flanked by two clumsy assistants, Kate McIntosh stands on the stage as a high priestess in a glittering gown. During a kind of revue, they passionately devote themselves to a series of household experiments.

Through their pseudo-scientific contentions and philosophical reflections, they unmask the dilettantes whose empirical argumentations – of the ‘things they know for sure’ – continue to fail.
