Meg Stuart en de Indonesische kunstenaar Jompet Kuswidananto wagen zich aan een artistieke ontdekkingstocht doorheen collectieve herinneringen en fictieve trauma’s. Imaginaire en onzichtbare ruimtes – en de stemmen die ze tot leven wekken – vormen slechts enkele van de vertrekpunten voor dit avontuurlijk onderzoek op onbekend terrein.

Op zoek naar een betere toekomst voor zijn kleindochter, ontvlucht Meneer Linh een door oorlog verscheurd land. Hij voelt zich niet thuis in het vreemde land, tot hij op een dag meneer Bark ontmoet. Koen De Sutter brengt deze indringende monoloog naar een tekst van Philippe Claudel. Tegelijk toont hij het verlangen naar communicatie met de ander – met het publiek. Zitten we eigenlijk in het hoofd van de verteller, net zoals zijn personages?

Cette fois, Ictus prend pour point de départ la thèse que la musique n’est pas uniquement du son et réunit de la poésie sonore, du spoken word et de la musique modale à la croisée de la mélodie et du rythme.

Vertrekkend vanuit rituelen en vieringen brengt Gisèle Vienne een groep van 15 jongeren bij elkaar die zich al dansend verliezen in een DJ-set van Peter Rehberg. Tegen het discours in dat alle geweld als barbaars bestempelt, zoekt ze naar verschijningsvormen en afbeeldingen van geweld die een waardevolle, positieve rol kunnen spelen in de samenleving. À partir de rituels et de célébrations, Gisèle Vienne réunit une quinzaine de jeunes qui s’immergent dans la danse au son d’un DJ-set de Peter Rehberg. À contre-courant du discours habituel qui qualifie toute forme de violence comme barbare, Vienne cherche des manifestations et des images de violence susceptibles de pouvoir jouer un rôle précieux et positif dans la société.

Exploring rituals and celebrations, Gisèle Vienne is bringing together a group of 15 young people who lose themselves while dancing to a DJ set by Peter Rehberg. To contradict the notion that all violence is barbaric, she looks for manifestations and images of violence that might play a valuable, positive role in society.

Wat als we na eeuwen van rechtop lopen, de verticaliteit weer loslaten? In de nieuwe creatie van Laurent Chétouane gaan twee dansers en een danseres op zoek naar nieuwe evenwichten in een ontwrichte setting. Een violist begeleidt hen ondertussen live op scène met Bachs prachtige eerste vioolpartita in b-mineur.

Et si, après des millénaires de bipédie, nous renoncions à la verticalité ? Dans la nouvelle création de Laurent Chétouane, deux danseurs et une danseuse partent à la recherche de nouveaux équilibres dans un décor disloqué. Sur scène, un violoniste les accompagne en interprétant la magnifique Partita n° 1 en si mineur pour violon de Bach.

‘VERLANGEN NAAR EEN GEVOEL VAN TRANCE’ IN GESPREK MET GISÈLE VIENNE

Wat gebeurt wanneer een groep mensen een trance bereikt waarin ieder al zijn spanning en agressie kwijtraakt? Hoe werkt groepsdynamiek echt?

Voor CROWD nodigde de Franse kunstenares en choreografe Gisèle Vienne vijftien jongeren uit om zich over te geven aan de technobeats van de jaren 90.

Enkele weken voor de première hebben we het met haar over de presentatie en representatie van geweld, over Indonesische rituelen, en door kunstenaars gecreëerde begrafenissen. ‘Kunst is wel degelijk een legitieme context waarin dood en geweld een plaats kunnen krijgen.’

In CROWD benader je geweld niet vanuit het typische negatieve perspectief. Is er nood aan een nieuw discours rond geweld?

GISÈLE VIENNE: De uiteenlopende types van geweld vormen al jaren één van de onderwerpen waar ik rond werk. Geweld en dood worden vaak als iets negatiefs beschouwd, ook al is het altijd inherent geweest aan de mensheid. Mensen zoeken al duizenden jaren de confrontatie met geweld op, ook in de kunst. Denk maar aan de rotsschilderingen in Chauvet. Daarom vind ik het zo verrassend dat sommige mensen zich afvragen waarom ik zulke onderwerpen nog altijd wil behandelen. Hoe gaan we om met onze gewelddadige impulsen? En met al die andere invasieve, onbeschaafde gedachten die we niet durven uitdrukken? Het is een zorg die al lang meegaat.

De manieren waarop samenlevingen ruimtes en situaties creëren waarin we geweld en andere emoties kunnen uitdrukken – zonder onrespectvol te zijn of anderen schade te berokkenen – houden me erg bezig. Ik denk dat kunst zo’n ruimte kan zijn. Eén van de uitgangspunten voor CROWD was de verschillende manieren om geweld uit te drukken tijdens een feestje – al dan niet gereguleerd, ongereguleerd of gerepresenteerd. Dit proces is sindsdien nog sterk geëvolueerd. De basisvragen zitten er nog in, maar zijn wat meer naar de achtergrond verschoven. Ik denk inderdaad niet dat ik geweld per se vanuit een negatieve hoek benader: ik probeer meer nuance te leggen door de verschillende uitdrukkingsvormen ervan aan te raken.

Deze expressie van geweld is mogelijk achter het beschermende schild van kunst.

Ook rituelen komen al lang tegemoet aan deze nood. We moeten zulke rituelen absoluut behouden, maar er evenzeer nieuwe bedenken. De eerste stap zal echter zijn om deze noden te identificeren, analyseren en begrijpen. Er zijn al kunstenaars, maar ook politici, sociologen en psychologen, die daarmee bezig zijn. Een betere dialoog tussen de verschillende benaderingen zou onze maatschappij vast en zeker ten goede komen.

Met RE:RITE, het focusprogramma van dit seizoen, staat het Kaaitheater stil bij de relevantie van bestaande rituelen, maar gaat ook op zoek naar nieuwe rituelen in kunstpraktijken. Welke plaats vind jij dat kunst moet innemen in hedendaagse rituelen?

We mogen het belang van het artistieke in rituelen – zoals huwelijken en begrafenissen – niet onderschatten. Een niet-religieuze staat moet een sterk, artistiek alternatief bieden 10

voor zulke symbolische momenten. Anders zou je denken dat religie een sterker spiritueel kader biedt dan niet-religieuze gemeenschappen.

Wellicht zoek je sowieso op de een of andere manier naar diepe en spirituele ervaringen in je leven, wie je ook bent, waar je ook bent opgegroeid en met welke middelen.

Kunstenaars zouden veel meer met die aspecten van de samenleving begaan moeten zijn.

Het zou bijvoorbeeld erg interessant zijn als je voor een begrafenis à la Matthew Barney of Pierre Huyghes kon kiezen. Aangezien zulke gebeurtenissen erg specifieke bedoelingen hebben, zouden de kunstenaars wel nauw moeten samenwerken met psychologen, sociologen, enzovoort, om er zeker van te zijn dat ze het volledige spectrum aan taken invullen: een begrafenis is bijvoorbeeld een spiritueel moment dat mensen confronteert met diepe vragen, maar ook een sterk moment van sociale cohesie.

Wat gebeurt er wanneer je geweld verbeeldt? Vindt er een transformatie plaats? En hoe waardevol is die transformatie, bijvoorbeeld tijdens het beleven van CROWD? Er zijn veel manieren om geweld te verbeelden en te suggereren. Ik heb vooral gewerkt met suggestie, veel meer dan met representatie. Vanaf de eerste repetities van CROWD was ik verrast door het grote plezier en de sensualiteit in het spelen rond, kijken naar en omgaan met geweld. Daarom vond ik het interessant om dat plezier te belichten en te stimuleren. Net als de krachtige, veelzijdige sensaties die boven komen tijdens het feest dat we op scène brengen, vol choreografische regels die de tijd lijken te vervormen.

Je zet het idee van lichamelijkheid duidelijk op scène door de performers van CROWD te laten dansen op sterk ritmische beats.

De lichamelijkheid van de danser en de lichamelijke ervaring van het publiek staan centraal in CROWD. We kozen ervoor te focussen op de underground techno raves uit de vroege jaren 90, met zijn utopieën en drugcultuur. Daar creëerden de feestvierders nieuwe rituelen – of droomden daar op z’n minst van. Meestal ging het slechts om onhandige pogingen: de kloof tussen utopie en realiteit bleef vaak groot. Niettemin waren sommige van die pogingen erg sterk en doordacht. Het was een zoektocht naar die ervaringen waar de maatschappij geen ruimte voor bood. Ravecultuur werd vaak gezien als niet meer dan een bende kinderen die uit de bol wouden gaan op zoek naar genot. Maar ik denk eigenlijk wel dat ze vaak op zoek waren naar diepere ervaringen. In plaats van afzonderlijke nummers te draaien, mixten de deejays lange, ononderbroken sets die dagen- en nachtenlang konden doorgaan. Het was een verlangen naar een gevoel van trance, door te dansen, wakker te blijven of drugs te gebruiken. In CROWD werken we rond dat soort van ‘altered experiences’, en met de vragen die daarbij komen kijken.

Hoe breng je zo’n ervaring van trance over op het publiek?

Ik denk niet dat het publiek de trance zelf zal ervaren, of dat ik die overbreng op het publiek. Maar we stellen hun perceptie wel in vraag tegenover die van ons, en ook hoe muziek, licht en beweging die perceptie kunnen beïnvloeden en veranderen.

De subjectieve ervaring van tijd en zijn vervormingen staat centraal in CROWD. We hebben gewerkt rond ritmische verstoringen en de specifieke kwaliteit van de performers.

Ook optische effecten, en vooral het lichtontwerp van Patrick Riou, wekken tegelijk een gevoel van helderheid en verwarring op. Ik werk wel vaker – en zeker in CROWD – met geretoucheerde bewegingen: met artificieel ogende lichamen, filmachtige montage en speciale effecten zoals slow motion, cut movements, superposities en versnellingen. Ze triggeren allemaal die tegelijk heldere en wazige staat. We gaan op zoek naar een persoonlijke en gevoelige benadering van die triggers, zodat ze de persoonlijkheid van de performers versterken. De superpositie van die verschillende soorten kwaliteiten en stijlen in de bewegingen heeft niet alleen choreografische en muzikale waarde, maar ook dramaturgische 11

en narratieve. Dat creëert interessante ritmische vibraties waarop je je kunt afstemmen – met soms een hypnotiserend effect.

Wanneer toeschouwers een theaterzaal binnenstappen, hebben ze allemaal een verschillend ritme, afhankelijk van de staat en situatie waarin ze zich bevonden voor ze naar binnen kwamen. Het stuk kan het ritme van hun lichamen afstemmen op haar eigen ritme.

Ik heb dat bijvoorbeeld al heel duidelijk ervaren in het Japanse Noh-theater.

Ervaren de dansers ook een soort trance?

Daar weet ik eigenlijk te weinig over, maar het klopt dat de dansers zich vaak in een bepaalde toestand bevinden tijdens mijn voorstellingen. Of dat is in elk geval wat we proberen te bereiken. We vertrekken van echte gevoelens en een bewuste aanwezigheid.

Zo willen we voorkomen dat we zomaar iets ‘faken’. Michel Leiris’ tekst1 over de theatrale aspecten van trance beschrijft de essentiële verschillen tussen ‘théâtre joué’ (gespeeld theater) en ‘théâtre vécu’ (geleefd theater). Die analyse sluit mooi aan bij mijn zoektocht op scène.

Dankzij Arco Renz kon ik naar Indonesië gaan in het kader van Europalia Indonesia, samen met fotografe Estelle Hanania en muzikant Stephen O’Malley. We kregen er de kans om veel verschillende rituelen te zien, waarin sommige mensen een tranceachtige toestand bereikten. Ik probeerde dit op een zo accuraat mogelijke manier te bestuderen. Natuurlijk was ik me er continu van bewust hoezeer ik een buitenlander was: ik probeerde te begrijpen wat ik kon – wat waarschijnlijk niet zo veel was.

Je hebt het vaak over de collectieve ervaring van het publiek en de dansers. Tegelijk heeft iedereen ook zijn individuele ervaring. Is dat iets wat je op de een of andere manier zichtbaar maakt?

Ik probeer inderdaad echt op een individueel niveau te werken. Vragen rond het functioneren van groepen kwam ook al voor in The Ventriloquists Convention: wat maakt een gemeenschap tot gemeenschap en hoe komt het dat al die mensen tegelijk erg geïsoleerde personen zijn die zich eenzaam of anders dan de rest van de groep voelen? In die zin voelt CROWD een beetje aan als een reeks portretten.

Ik heb veel nagedacht over en geëxperimenteerd met het aantal mensen dat nodig was om een ‘crowd’ te vormen, waarin toch nog elk individu afzonderlijk opvalt. Voor deze voorstelling bleek vijftien het ideale aantal: je hebt de tijd om elke danser apart te bestuderen.

Elk lichaam vertelt een volledig verhaal, een heel boek, dat een web van narratieven spint.

Het is als een rijk schilderij vol details. Hoe vaak je het ook bekijkt, je ziet nooit alles. Ik hoop een soortgelijke ervaring teweeg te brengen in CROWD – niet op een frustrerende manier, maar op een spannende.

« IL Y A UNE SOIF GÉNÉRALE D’UN SENTIMENT DE TRANSE » UN ENTRETIEN AVEC GISÈLE VIENNE

Que se passe-t-il quand un groupe entre dans une transe qui lui permet de libérer toutes les tensions et l’agressivité ? Comment fonctionne la dynamique d’un groupe ? Pour le spectacle CROWD, l’artiste et chorégraphe française Gisèle Vienne a invité quinze adolescents à s’abandonner au rythme de la techno des années 90. Nous l’avons rencontrée quelques semaines avant la première du spectacle pour discuter des présentations et des représentations de la violence, de rituels indonésiens et de funérailles pensées par des artistes. « L’art est véritablement un contexte légitime pour aborder la mort et la violence. »

Dans CROWD, vous approchez la violence à partir d’une perspective différente de la conception négative habituelle. Y a-t-il besoin d’un nouveau discours sur la violence ?

GISÈLE VIENNE : J’ai travaillé de nombreuses années sur différents types de violence – parmi beaucoup d’autres sujets. La violence et la mort ont souvent une connotation négative. La violence a cependant toujours fait partie de l’humanité, qu’elle soit ou ne soit pas considérée comme civilisée. Les humains ont fait face ou ont cherché à faire face à la violence depuis des millénaires, également dans l’art. Il suffit de penser aux peintures de la grotte Chauvet dont j’ai visité la réplique l’été passé. Il me paraît donc étonnant qu’au XXIe siècle, certaines se demandent encore pourquoi j’aborderais ces sujets. Comment gère-t-on les différentes pulsions violentes en nous et d’autres pensées inappropriées si difficiles à exprimer ? C’est une préoccupation très ancienne.

Je suis très concernée par les manières dont les sociétés et les communautés créent des espaces et des situations dans lesquels la violence et d’autres émotions et pensées peuvent être exprimées et échangées au sein d’un dialogue intime, sans être irrespectueuses ou porter préjudice à la communauté. Je pense que l’art peut être un tel espace – parmi d’autres.

Toutefois : si les diverses façons d’exprimer la violence au sein d’une petite communauté lors d’une fête – qu’elle soit régulée, non régulée ou représentée – étaient un des points de départ de CROWD, le processus a beaucoup évolué. Ces questions sont toujours présentes, mais plus périphériques. Je ne pense pas aborder la violence d’un point de vue forcément négatif ; j’essaie d’introduire plus de nuances dans l’approche de ses différentes expressions. Et CROWD tente aussi de présenter ces nuances additionnelles.

Aussi les rituels ont longtemps répondu à ces besoins. La représentation et le dialogue sur la violence – et autres pensées et sentiments malséants – deviennent possibles derrière la force protectrice de l’art. Il nous faut certainement continuer à pratiquer ces rituels et à en inventer de nouveaux pour satisfaire ces besoins. Mais la première étape consistera à les identifier, les analyser et les comprendre. Certains artistes, certains politiciens, ainsi que des sociologues et des psychologues y travaillent. Un meilleur dialogue entre les différentes écoles de pensées, une meilleure collaboration bénéficierait sans aucun doute à l’organisa-tion de notre société vis-à-vis de ces sujets.

Parlant de rituels : cette saison au Kaaitheater, le programme RE:RITE examine les rituels. En réfléchissant à la pertinence de rituels existants, mais en partant également en quête de nouveaux rituels dans des pratiques artistiques. Selon vous, quelle place les rituels devraient-ils occuper dans l’art aujourd’hui ?

Il ne faudrait jamais sous-estimer l’importance de la qualité de l’expérience artistique dans les rituels, comme les mariages ou les enterrements, ou n’importe quel autre rituel. Lorsqu’une société sécularisée ne propose pas de rituels aux qualités artistiques puissantes pour ces moments symboliques, les gens pourraient croire que la religion offre un espace spirituel plus intense que les communautés non religieuses.

J’imagine que chacun est d’une certaine façon à la recherche d’expériences profondes et spirituelles dans la vie, qui qu’on soit, où qu’on ait grandi et quels que soient les outils dont on dispose. Les artistes devraient s’engager davantage dans ces aspects de la société.

Ce serait très intéressant de pouvoir choisir, par exemple, des obsèques Matthew Barney ou Pierre Huyghes. Dans la mesure où l’objet de ces événements est très spécifique, ils devraient sans doute travailler en étroite collaboration avec des psychologues, des sociologues, etc., pour s’assurer de satisfaire la gamme complète de tâches que remplissent des funérailles. Il s’agit d’un moment spirituel où les personnes touchées se retrouvent face à plusieurs questions profondes, mais il s’agit aussi d’un moment de forte cohésion sociale.

Les psychologues et les sociologues sont bien entendu plus compétents que moi pour décrire ces divers rôles et aspects.

Que se passe-t-il quand vous représentez la violence ? Une transformation ? Si tel était le cas, quelle serait la valeur de cette transformation lorsqu’on assiste à CROWD, par exemple ?

Il y a plusieurs manières de représenter et de suggérer la violence. J’ai surtout fait appel à la suggestion, bien plus qu’à la représentation. Dès le début des répétitions de CROWD, j’ai été surprise par la part importante de plaisir et de sensualité qui s’en dégageait en le jouant, en le regardant, et en gérant – parmi d’autres sujets – la violence dans ce contexte précis. J’ai donc pensé qu’il serait intéressant d’également mettre ce plaisir en valeur et se focaliser sur la variété étendue et puissante de sensations qui émergent durant une fête. Une fête au large éventail d’émotions et de comportements dans la structure formelle que nous avons choisie, où le temps est fortement déformé par des règles chorégraphiques particulières.

En faisant danser la foule de CROWD sur des beats très rythmiques, vous donnez au corps, au physique, un rôle très important sur scène.

L’état physique du performeur et l’expérience physique du public sont essentiels dans CROWD. Le lieu où se déroule le spectacle pourrait être une rave dans les années 90, avec ses utopies et sa culture de la drogue. Un lieu où l’on crée de nouveaux rituels ou rêve tout du moins d’en créer. Dans la réalité, tout cela était plutôt très maladroit : le fossé entre l’utopie et la réalité était grand. Néanmoins, certaines de ces expériences et idées étaient réellement fortes et réfléchies.

C’était une autre façon de rechercher des expériences auxquelles la société n’offrait pas d’espaces appropriés. Ces rave parties et cette culture étaient souvent considérées comme des réunions de jeunes qui voulaient s’éclater, se divertir. Mais je pense que la plupart du temps les gens étaient en quête – de manière maladroite ou de façon très pertinente – d’expériences plus profondes.

Ces subcultures liées à la musique font référence à des genres spécifiques : la techno, le black metal, le punk, le rock… Pour CROWD, nous nous sommes concentrés sur la musique techno en tant qu’élément d’une culture underground du début des années 90.

Au lieu de « morceaux », cette musique se déployait en longues plages ininterrompues.

De la musique composée de morceaux, mais échantillonnée de manière à susciter la sensation d’une longue composition qui va perdurer jusqu’au bout de la fête, tout au long de la nuit et du jour suivant. Il y a une soif générale de ce sentiment de transe, qui peut éventuellement se manifester par la danse, le manque de sommeil ou la prise de stupéfiants. Dans CROWD, nous travaillons autour de ces expériences de perception altérée et de questions qui y ont trait. On retrouve d’ailleurs ces mêmes questions dans mes autres pièces.

Comment transmettez-vous cette sensation de transe au public ?

Je ne pense pas que les spectateurs ressentiront cette transe ou que je la leur transmettrai. Mais nous interrogerons certainement notre perception par opposition à la leur. Et aussi la façon dont la musique, la lumière et le mouvement peuvent les influencer et les altérer.

L’expérience subjective du temps et de ses distorsions est au cœur du spectacle. Nous avons travaillé sur les distorsions rythmiques et sur la qualité spécifique de la présence des performeurs. Les effets optiques aussi, et en particulier l’éclairage de Patrick Riou, peuvent provoquer un sentiment de clarté ainsi qu’une confusion simultanée. Mon travail s’inspire en général, et CROWD en particulier, de mouvements retouchés, de possibilités de corps artificiels, de montages et d’effets spéciaux cinématographiques, comme des ralentis, des mouvements saccadés, des coupures et des accélérations – tous des éléments déclencheurs de cet état de clarté et de confusion.

Nous n’abordons pas ces sensations en les imitant, mais tentons au contraire de trouver une approche très personnelle, très spécifique, afin qu’elles puissent aider à souligner la personnalité des performeurs. La superposition de ces qualités de mouvements et de styles ne recèle pas seulement une grande valeur chorégraphique et musicale, mais dramaturgique et narrative aussi. Elle génère des vibrations rythmiques intéressantes auxquelles on s’habitue et qui peuvent en fin de compte exercer un effet quelque peu hypnotique.

Quand on entre dans un théâtre, chacun a un rythme différent, un rythme déterminé par l’état d’esprit et les situations qui ont précédé l’entrée au théâtre. À un moment donné, leurs corps peuvent s’harmoniser avec la musicalité de la pièce. J’ai ressenti cela de manière très claire dans le théâtre nô japonais.

Les performeurs entrent-ils en transe ?

Je l’ignore. Il me faudrait d’abord mieux comprendre ces types d’états. Mais il est vrai que les performeurs atteignent souvent des états particuliers dans mes pièces. Du moins, c’est ce que nous tentons d’obtenir. Nous essayons de travailler à partir de sentiments réels et d’un état de conscience très présent afin d’éviter de simuler quoi que ce soit.

Le texte de Michel Leiris1 sur l’aspect théâtral de la transe décrit les différences essentielles entre le « théâtre joué » et le « théâtre vécu ». Cette analyse me paraît fondamentale et très intéressante pour les états de conscience que je recherche pour mes pièces. Et je suppose qu’elle constitue une expérience essentielle du spectacle vivant.

Grâce à Arco Renz, nous sommes allées en Indonésie dans le cadre d’Europalia Indonesia avec la photographe Estelle Hanania et le musicien Stephen O’Malley. Nous y avons eu l’occasion d’assister à plusieurs rituels différents, lors desquels certaines personnes entraient en état de transe, ce à quoi je ne m’attendais pas. J’ai tenté de les observer et de ressentir la situation de la manière la plus précise et la plus ouverte. Il va de soi que je suis restée pleinement consciente à quel point je suis étrangère à tout cela, mais j’ai essayé de comprendre ce que je pouvais – sans doute pas grand-chose.

Vous parlez beaucoup de l’expérience collective du public et des danseurs. En même temps, chacun vit une expérience individuelle. Tentez-vous de rendre cet aspect quelque peu visible ?

Je tente en effet vraiment de travailler au niveau individuel. J’ai abordé le fonctionnement de groupe dans The Ventriloquists Convention : qu’est-ce qui fait d’une communauté une communauté ? Et comment tous ces gens sont-ils aussi des individus, des personnes isolées qui se sentent même seules et différentes du reste du groupe ? En ce sens, CROWD me paraît plutôt une galerie de portraits.

J’ai beaucoup réfléchi et beaucoup expérimenté pour décider combien de personnes il me fallait porter à la scène pour avoir une foule et toujours être capable de voir chacun séparément en tant qu’individu. Pour le spectacle CROWD, quinze était le nombre idéal.

On peut prendre le temps d’observer chaque danseur à travers la forme spécifique de la pièce. En outre, ils ont tous de fortes personnalités, chaque corps véhicule toute une histoire, tout un livre et cela donne une densité élevée de récits, comme un tableau très dense qui regorge de détails. Même en le contemplant à plusieurs reprises, on ne peut jamais tout voir. J’espère déclencher une expérience similaire avec CROWD. Non pas de manière frustrante, mais très excitante.

‘THERE’S AN OVERALL CRAVING FOR A FEELING OF TRANCE’ IN CONVERSATION WITH GISÈLE VIENNE

What happens when a group of people gets into a trance in which they release all their tension and aggression? How do group dynamics actually work?

For CROWD, French artist and choreographer Gisèle Vienne invited fifteen youngsters to surrender to the techno beats of the 90s. We meet her some weeks before the premiere, to talk about the presentations and representations of violence, Indonesian rituals, and artist-made funerals.

‘Art truly is a legitimate context to deal with death and violence.’

In CROWD you approach violence from a different perspective than the usual negative one. Is there a need for a new discourse on violence?

GISÈLE VIENNE: For many years, I’ve been working on different types of violence – among many other topics. Violence and death are often considered negative. Violence has always been part of humankind, irrespective of whether it was considered civilized. Humans have made and searched for confrontations with violence for thousands of years, including in art. Just think of the cave paintings in Chauvet, of which I discovered the replica last summer. So it’s surprising that in the 21st century, some people still wonder why I treat these topics. How do we deal with the different violent impulses inside us? And with other, improper thoughts that are so hard to express? It’s a very old concern.

I have a deep preoccupation with the ways societies and communities create spaces and situations in which violence, and other emotions and thoughts, can be expressed and exchanged within an intimate dialogue, without being disrespectful or causing damage to the community. I think art could be such a space.

Nonetheless: if the various ways of expressing violence during a party – be it regulated, unregulated, or represented – were one of the starting points of CROWD, the process changed a lot along the way. These questions are still there, but they are more peripheral.

I don’t think I necessarily approach violence from a negative angle: I attempt to create more nuance in approaching its different expressions. And CROWD tries to contribute these additional nuances too.

Rituals have fulfilled these needs for a long time as well. The representation of and the dialogue on violence – and other improper feelings and thoughts – are possible behind the shielding force of art. We certainly need to continue these rituals and invent new ones to respond to these needs. But the first step will be to identify, analyse and understand them. Some artists, but also politicians, sociologists and psychologists are exploring these issues. A better dialogue between the different schools of thought, and more effective collaboration, would certainly benefit the organization of our society with respect to these concerns.

Talking about rituals: in this season’s focus programme RE:RITE, Kaaitheater is investigating rituals. By reflecting on the relevance of existing rituals, but also by looking for new rituals in artistic practices. What place do you think art should have in rituals nowadays?

We should never underestimate the importance of the quality of the artistic experience in rituals, such as for example weddings and funerals, or any other ones. When a non-religious state does not propose a strong artistic quality for these symbolic moments, people could perhaps think that religion is a stronger spiritual space than non-religious communities.

I guess everybody is somehow looking for deep and spiritual experiences in life, whoever you are, wherever you’re raised and whatever tools you have. Artists should be far more involved in these aspects of society. It would be very interesting if you could choose, for example, to have a Matthew Barney funeral or a Pierre Huyghes version. As the purpose of these events is very specific, they should probably work closely with psychologists, sociologists, etcetera, to make sure that they’re fulfilling the complete range of tasks that a funeral implies. It is a spiritual moment where people face many deep questions, but also a strong moment of social cohesion. Psychologists and sociologists are, of course, more competent than me to describe these various roles and aspects.

What happens when you represent violence? Does a transformation occur? What is the value of this transformation, for example, while experiencing CROWD? There are many ways to represent and suggest violence. I’ve mainly been working with suggestion, far more than representation. From the very beginning of the rehearsals for CROWD, I was surprised by the enormous pleasure and sensuality of performing, watching, and dealing with violence in this specific context. So I thought it would also be interesting to enhance and focus on this pleasure and the powerful and wide variety of sensations that arise during a party. A party with a great range of emotions and behaviours in the specific formal way we chose, where time is completely distorted by specific choreographic rules.

You clearly bring the notion of physicality onto the stage by having CROWD’s crowd dance to very rhythmic beats.

The physical state of the performer, and the physical experience of the audience are central concerns in CROWD. We decided to focus on a techno rave party in the early 90s, with its utopias and drug culture in which new rituals were created, or at least dreamed up.

In reality, this often remained very clumsy: there was a big gap between utopia and reality.

Nevertheless, some of these attempts really were strong and carefully considered. It was another way of looking for the experiences for which society didn’t offer the right spaces.

These parties and this culture were often just seen as kids who wanted to get crazy and entertain themselves. But I think most of the time people were actually looking for deeper experiences.

Instead of playing tracks, deejays mixed uninterrupted sets, creating the feeling of one long composition during parties that would last all night and day. There’s an overall craving for this feeling of trance, which can be triggered by dancing, a lack of sleep or taking drugs. In CROWD we work with these experiences of altered perception – and the questions related to it. These questions also recur in my other pieces.

How do you transfer this experience of trance to the audience?

I don’t think the audience will experience this trance, or that I will effect it in them.

But we will certainly question our perception versus their perception, as well as the way music, light, and movement can influence and alter them.

The subjective experience of time and its distortions is central in CROWD. We worked on rhythmic distortions and the performers’ specific quality of presence. Optical effects, and especially Patrick Riou’s light, can also provoke a feeling of clarity – as well as a simultaneous confusion. My work in general, and especially CROWD, is often inspired by 20

retouched movements, artificial bodies, and the possibilities of film-like editing and special effects such as slow motion, cut movements, edits and accelerations. All these are triggers for this state of clarity and confusion. We try to find a very personal and sensitive approach to these triggers, so that the personality of the performers can be enhanced through them.

The superposition of the qualities and styles of these kinds of movements not only has great choreographic and musical value, but is also dramaturgically and narratively important. It creates interesting rhythmical vibrations to which you can attune, and which eventually have a somewhat hypnotising effect.

When you step inside a theatre, everybody has a different rhythm determined by the state and situations they were in before entering. The rhythm of the piece can ultimately attune their bodies to the musicality of the piece. I experienced that very clearly in Japanese Noh-theatre.

Do the performers also experience a kind of trance?

I don’t know, I would first have to understand these kinds of states better. But it is true that the performers will often be in a specific state during my pieces. At least that’s what we try to achieve. We try to work from real feelings and a very present state of being to avoid faking anything. The text by Michel Leiris1 on theatrical aspects of trance describes essential differences between ‘théâtre joué’ (played theatre) and ‘théâtre vécu’ (lived theatre).

This analysis seems to me to be essential and interesting for the states of being I’m looking for onstage, and I think this is a more essential experience of performance.

We had the opportunity to see many different rituals, in which some people reached trancelike states. This was not something I had expected. I tried to watch them and experience the situation in the most accurate and open way. Of course I was still conscious of how much of a foreigner I was, and I tried to understand what I could, which was probably not much.

You talk a lot about the collective experience of the audience and the dancers. At the same time, everybody is having an individual experience. Is this something you make visible somehow?

I really try to work on an individual level, indeed. I addressed the functioning of groups in The Ventriloquists Convention: what makes a community a community and how are all these people also very isolated persons that even feel lonely and different from the rest of the group? In that sense, CROWD feels like a gallery of portraits.

I’ve thought and experimented a lot to discover how many people I had to put on stage to have a crowd, while still being able to see every single one on their own. For CROWD, fifteen was perfect. You can take the time to observe each dancer through the specific form of the piece. Each body is a full story, a whole book, which creates a very strong density of narratives. It’s like a rich painting with many little details. Even if you were to watch it several times, you would never be able to see everything. I hope to trigger the same experience in CROWD. Not in a frustrating way – but in a very exciting way.

MOUSSEM CITIES: CASABLANCA THE CITY OF THE MOROCCAN DREAM We asked Mohamed Ikoubaân and Cees Vossen – the director and performing arts programmer of Moussem Nomadic Arts Centre, respectively – why they decided on Casablanca this year.

It seemed exciting and necessary to introduce audiences to contemporary Moroccan society – which also plays a role in Brussels – through the current arts scene in Casablanca.

We chose Casablanca because it is by far the most modern city in Morocco, even though there are other more famous cities. The royal cities of Fez, Marrakesh, Meknes and Rabat, for example, are flooded with tourists every day. Casablanca is different, and historically it is a much more recent city. It is the city of the Moroccan Dream, and embodies the transition in Moroccan society from the old to the new, from agrarian to urban. This has made the city a contemporary metropolis that undergoes constant change. Take demographics, for example: from 20,000 inhabitants in 1907 to more than 4 million today. This has resulted in an economic boom, but also social inequality.

Perhaps it is precisely thanks to its diverse and complex character that Casablanca has such a rich cultural life. For example, the city’s music scene is the place where new bands try to break through. It was here where the film industry began flourishing, and the first cabarets opened across the city. An underground scene and counterculture have been developing, both in the arts and in social movements and urban culture. As a metropolis with urban challenges, Casablanca is an ideal biotope for an independent, socially engaged arts landscape.

Almost all the artists we invited for this edition are from Casablanca. They live and work there, and are constantly inspired by their context. Their work sketches a portrait of the city, as it were, and reveals the current developments and the histories that are associated with it. Our main goal is to showcase the diversity and dynamism of this special place. Casablanca is a melting-pot of people from different backgrounds. And just like in Brussels, the city welcomes newcomers with open arms. In other words: anybody could be from Casablanca!

In the run-up to the festival, a few local writers sketched impressions of their city. Among them is Maria Daïf (°1972, Casablanca), journalist and cultural manager. Since 2015, she has been the director of ‘La Fondation Touria et Abdelaziz Tazi pour la promotion et le soutien de la culture’, and of the arts centre l’Uzine.

Borrowing the expression from Zola I often like to say that Casablanca is the belly of Morocco. To feel the pulse of the country, an immersion in the indomitable metropolis is unavoidable. Receptacle of a massive rural exodus, laboratory for small and large investors, playground for real estate developers, source of so much misery, generous when one takes the trouble to probe her, heartless for he or she who doesn't have the cash: Casablanca is by herself the condensation of the contradictions that traverse and define the whole kingdom. Casablanca is difficult to define. It’s difficult to give her an identity, a cachet – like the tourists who frown at her like to say. She escapes all uniformity. She changes form from street to street, from season to season, from day to day. Even in the most general sense, there’s no typical Casablancais or Casablancaise. Petrified by the paradoxes of their city, her inhabitants navigate between liberalism and conservatism, without really knowing where the wind will lead them. They live from day to day.

Casablanca’s tensions are visible to the naked eye and one needn’t be a prophet in one's town to know that it are these same tensions that generate this two-faced energy of which she alone has the secret: an energy that is both violent and creative.

Two facets of Casablanca compete. The most dangerous city in the country is also, surprisingly, the most cordial. The city where women are the most harassed in the street is also the one where you’ll find the most active and autonomous women. The city where every derby is a riot is the same city where creativity is most surprising.

Thus is Casablanca, in the eyes of those who are passionate about her. Her best side always saves her from her worst side. She is in perpetual redemption. No doubt, that’s what makes her so terribly human.

Casablanca gives nothing for free. She opens her arms to everyone who has a name, cash or the gift of the gab. She unscrupulously bans the one who only has her tears to offer. She loves neither the oppressed nor the troubled souls. She prefers conquerors whatever their weapons. No one lives in peace in Casablanca. Everyone accepts this state of affairs, as one accepts a divine fatality. In the end, in Casablanca you try to get what you want, that’s all. To each his technique and I have mine.

Take Casablanca with open arms. Look for the best and find it, inevitably. Continue searching. Especially do not pretend not to see the worst. On the contrary, confront it.

Believe, perhaps naively, that Casablanca will eventually show her most beautiful side.

Samen met vijf acteurs suggereert Bashar Murkus een vorm die al deze verhalen met elkaar verbindt in een nieuw soort Palestijnse identiteit: één die niet gebonden is aan een territorium.

Que signifie la Palestine pour la diaspora palestinienne étendue, composée de réfugiés ou d’exilés volontaires ? Avec cinq comédiens, Bashar Murkus propose une forme de nouvelle identité palestinienne qui relie toutes ces histoires : une identité qui ne serait pas liée au territoire.

What does Palestine mean to the extensive Palestinian diaspora of refugees and selfimposed exiles? Along with five actors, Bashar Murkus suggests a form that connects all these stories in a new kind of Palestinian identity: one that is not tied to a particular territory.
