EL CONDE DE TORREFIEL[ES] LA PLAZA El Conde de Torrefiel is een van de recente revelaties van het Kunstenfestivaldesarts.

Het duo uit Barcelona creëert steevast visuele performances waarin hyperrealistische tableaus clashen met scherpe tekst – een mix van geschiedenis, actualiteit en futurisme.

LA PLAZA beschouwt het podium als plein: een publieke plek die tegelijk dagelijkse, banale bezigheden in het Europa van vandaag laat zien én verontrustend toekomstscènes verbeeldt.

El Conde de Torrefiel est l’une des révélations récentes du Kunstenfestivaldesarts. Le duo de Barcelone crée systématiquement des spectacles visuels dans lesquels des tableaux hyperréalistes s’entrechoquent avec des textes acerbes – un mélange d’histoire, d’actualité et de futurisme. LA PLAZA considère la scène comme une esplanade : un espace public qui montre à la fois des activités quotidiennes, banales dans l’Europe d’aujourd’hui et représente des scènes d’avenir préoccupantes.

Over the years, Christodoulos Panayiotou has compiled an archive on the ways in which fiction can escape mortality and finitude. From Dalida’s most tragic songs to Michael Jackson’s urge to perform one last time.

He presents this archive in Dying on Stage. He combines the precision of a lecture with the indeterminacy of night-time internet surfing.

Au fil des années, Christodoulos Panayiotou a rassemblé des archives sur les différentes manières dont la fiction peut échapper à la mortalité et la finitude. Des chansons les plus tragiques de Dalida au désir de Michael Jackson de se produire une dernière fois. Lors de Dying on Stage, il dévoile ces archives. Parfois avec la précision d’une conférence, d’autres fois selon les imprécisions de navigations nocturnes sur la Toile.

Juli 1968. Het legendarische – zelfs revolutionaire – Paradise Now van The Living Theatre gaat in première in Avignon. 50 jaar later waagt artist-in-residence Michiel Vandevelde zich aan een zoek-tocht naar de restanten van de erfenis van Mei ’68, samen met een nieuwe generatie jongeren. Openen er zich nieuwe toekomstperspectieven wanneer 13 jongeren een halve eeuw geschiedenis scannen in een wilde choreografie van iconische beelden?

TOSHIKI OKADA[JP] FIVE DAYS IN MARCH (RE-CREATION) De deelname aan de Amerikaans-Britse invasie van Irak in 2003 betekende het eerste Japanse militaire engagement sinds WO II. Historische vredesbetogingen in Tokyo volgden, tussen de manifestanten heel wat jongeren. In Five Days in March delen enkele personages hun hoogstpersoonlijke bekommernissen. Het beeld dat zij je geven van het alledaagse, private leven in Tokyo contrasteert met hun publieke deelname aan de betoging. Met deze herwerking van zijn originele creatie uit 2007 schetst Toshiki Okada een generatie jongeren die het spoor bijster is.

La participation du Japon à l’invasion américano-britannique de l’Irak en 2003 constitue le premier engagement militaire du pays depuis la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Cette décision a provoqué des manifestations historiques en faveur de la paix à Tokyo auxquelles se sont joints beaucoup de jeunes. Dans Five Days in March, quelques personnages partagent leurs préoccupations hautement personnelles. L’image qu’ils nous renvoient de la vie privée quotidienne à Tokyo contraste avec leur participation publique à une manifestation. Avec cette adaptation de la création originale de 2007, Toshiki Okada brosse le tableau d’une génération égarée.

PARADISE NOW (TOEN EN NU): OVER REVOLUTIONAIR THEATER MICHIEL VANDEVELDE IN GESPREK MET RICHARD SCHECHNER (GEMODEREERD DOOR KRISTOF VAN BAARLE)

In oktober 2017 nodigden we grondlegger van de theaterwetenschap Richard Schechner en choreograaf, danser en curator Michiel Vandevelde uit voor een gesprek over kunst, kunstencentra en de wereld. Het gesprek vond plaats tijdens de 40ste verjaardagsweek van het Kaaitheater, als onderdeel van Radio Etoile.

In een kleine serre in het midden van het Kaaicafé gaven kunstenaars, denkers, docenten en journalisten een inkijk in hun denken tijdens een reeks radiogesprekken.

Het gesprek met Schechner en Vandevelde draaide rond de in 1968 gecreëerde voorstelling Paradise Now van het Amerikaanse collectief The Living Theatre, dat werd opgericht in 1947 en vandaag nog steeds bestaat. Richard Schechner richtte het departement theaterwetenschap op aan de NYU Tisch School of the Arts. Hij heeft de manier waarop we podiumkunsten vandaag bestuderen en hoe we erover denken zwaar beïnvloed. Het belang van zijn eigen onderzoek naar rituelen valt niet te onderschatten. Vanaf de jaren 60 was hij nauw verbonden met The Living Theatre.

Michiel Vandevelde was op het moment van het gesprek net begonnen met het creatieproces van zijn nieuwe stuk Paradise Now (1968-2018), dat geworteld is in de productie van The Living Theatre. Hij heeft een brede praktijk in dans, choreografie, schrijven en discursieve activiteiten. Hij is hier bovendien artist-in-residence en maakt deel uit van de artistieke teams van het Brusselse festival Bâtard en de Antwerpse kunsthal Extra City. Tot maart van dit jaar zat hij ook in het redactieteam van het podiumkunstenblad Etcetera.

Richard, wat was The Living Theatre precies? Kun je met ons je toenmalige kijkervaring van Paradise Now delen?

RS: The Living Theatre begon vlak na de Tweede Wereldoorlog als een ‘klassiek kunsttheater’. Het was een collectief onder leiding van Judith Malina en Julian Beck. Zij waren geïnteresseerd in poëzie en het werk van schrijvers als Antonin Artaud en William Carlos Williams. Hun eerste grote doorbraken waren The Connection van Jack Gelber in 1959, en The Brig van Kenneth H. Brown. Die stukken voerden ze hyperrealistisch op en er zat een duidelijke sociale bekommernis in. In 1964 vielen belastingsagenten het theater binnen tijdens een voorstelling en arresteerden iedereen van The Living Theatre omdat de groep niet betaald had. De aanwezigen in het theater – ik was er zelf ook – hadden de keuze: we konden blijven en ook gearresteerd worden, of weggaan. Daarop vertrokken de meeste leden van The Living Theatre naar Europa. De enkelingen die bleven, zoals Joseph Chaikin, richtten The Open Theatre op. Degenen die naar Europa trokken, werden openlijk politiek en anarchistisch. Ze waren tegen elke mogelijke vorm van regering. Ze noemden het ‘de mooie, anarchistische revolutie’ en de zwarte vlag van de anarchie was hun kernidee. In Europa creëerden ze Paradise Now. In dat stuk verwierpen ze het realisme en de notie van een narratief. De performers representeerden zichzelf en vertelden hun verhaal, van slavernij tot bevrijding, van onwetendheid tot kennis en van duisternis tot verlichting in spirituele zin. Tegelijk wisten ze dat ze dat paradijs nooit konden bereiken, dus het ging evenzeer over de woede en frustratie van niet verlicht en vrij te kunnen zijn. De kenmerken van de voorstelling die me het meest troffen op dat moment, waren die woede en de intensiteit ervan, samen met de hoop die altijd uitgesteld werd.

Ze nodigden de toeschouwers uit om mee te doen, wat die vaak deden. De voorstelling vond plaats in 1968, een periode van grote opschudding in heel de wereld. Je had de moorden op Robert en John Kennedy en op Martin Luther King. De Nationale Democratische Conventie vond plaats met de daaropvolgende onlusten in Chicago, en er waren enorme studentendemonstraties in Mexico City en in Parijs. Die jongerenbewegingen waren extreem optimistisch, maar ook polariserend. De bewegingen tegen de regering waren vitaal en actief. The Living Theatre steunde ze niet alleen, het collectief sloot zich erbij aan en nam een leidersrol op zich: na de voorstellingen bracht het mensen op straat.

Michiel, jij wil met jongeren een herwerking maken van Paradise Now. Wat is je precieze bedoeling?

MV: Ik heb Paradise Now leren kennen door een videodocumentaire die ik zag in 2012. Ik was toen erg getroffen door het performatieve en onverholen politieke karakter ervan, iets wat je tegenwoordig nog weinig op een podium ziet. Op dat moment was ik zelf betrokken bij de Idignadosbeweging hier in Brussel en de Occupy Movement in Londen.

Toen een theatergezelschap me vroeg om iets met jongeren te maken, besliste ik daarom met dit stuk aan de slag te gaan. Ik wil zien wat er gebeurd is in de vijftig jaar tussen ’68 en 2018. Toen was er bijvoorbeeld een soort van hoop. Ze konden de toekomst nog denken, terwijl dat nu bijna onmogelijk geworden is. Ik ben geïnteresseerd in hoe The Living Theatre met energie, chakra’s en spiritualiteit werkte. Hoe kunnen we daarmee aan de slag gaan om een nieuw soort voorstelling te maken? En wat zou in de 21e-eeuw een ‘paradise now’ kunnen zijn? Ik denk dat het radicaal anders zou zijn, iets wat niet kan zijn wat het toen was.

RS: Ik denk dat een ander cruciaal verschil de komst van het internet en de digitalisering is. In plaats van de straat op te gaan, gaan we naar almaar globalere maatschappijen, waar mensen via hun machines contact zoeken met elkaar. Ze leven op die machines.

Vandaag denken we aan digitale grondstoffen en hebben we de multisensoriële ervaring, waardoor we omgeven kunnen zijn, getranformeerd en gereduceerd tot een voornamelijk visuele ervaring. De klassieke revolutie gebeurde onder het schild van de dichtstbijzijnde zintuigen: tastzin, smaak, geur. Natuurlijk waren zicht en gehoor ook erg belangrijk, maar beperkter, want de actie kon niet op afstand gebeuren. Digitale acties – en we weten nog niet of onder die voorwaarden een revolutie mogelijk is – gebeuren structureel op een soort kritische afstand. Onze jonge mensen zijn veel cynischer – in de positieve betekenis van het woord – ze zijn ironisch, niet ‘oprecht’. The Living Theatre droeg oprechtheid hoog in het vaandel. Anders dan waarheid, die je kunt toetsen aan een reeks standaarden, zoals de wetenschappelijke of de religieuze, is oprechtheid persoonlijk. Voor hen telde de notie van dat persoonlijke geloof van oprechtheid en ‘authenticiteit’, veeleer dan het publieke geloof of de politieke ideologie.

MV: Mag ik daar even tegenin gaan? Voor veel mensen brengen de machines waarover je spreekt ook nabijheid. En ze hebben mensen wel degelijk de straat op gebracht, zoals tijdens de Arabische Lente. Ook in Europa komen mensen trouwens nog steeds samen, denk maar aan de Nuit Debout in 2016. Ik ben het er wél mee eens dat technologie veel invloed heeft: ze werkt vooral met beelden en spreekt daardoor vooral aan wat vóór de taal komt. Het draait om aangrijpen. We worden aangegrepen door iets wat we op ons scherm zien. Maar vanaf het ogenblik dat we het proberen te vatten in taal, valt de hele beweging uit elkaar. Je krijgt dus een individualisering van de politieke actie.

The Living Theatre vormde een erg fysieke gemeenschap: ze leefden samen, droegen de waarden van hun gemeenschap uit en maakten er een artistieke vertaling van op het podium. Wat is collectiviteit vandaag nog? En welke plaats krijgt ze in voorstellingen van vandaag?

MV: Gemeenschappen in Brussel komen vandaag niet langer samen rond een ideologie, zoals dat ging in de jaren 60, maar er vindt wel nog politieke actie plaats, meestal rond erg concrete problemen. Het gaat niet meer zodanig om het ‘geheel’ maar om specifieke punten. Wat ik veel zie in het activisme van vandaag, is dat het inspeelt op jurisdictie, op recht: je bekijkt wat de regels precies zijn en hoe ver je ze kunt uitrekken.

Het Charter voor podiumkunstenaars bijvoorbeeld, focust op een erg specifiek probleem, namelijk het feit dat kunstenaars vaak niet eerlijk betaald worden voor het werk dat ze leveren in bestaande instellingen. Maar het charter doet niets anders dan opnieuw bevestigen wat al wettelijk vastlag.

RS: In plaats van de klasserevolutie van de jaren 60, hebben we het nu over de herverdeling van de rijkdom: hoe transnationale bedrijven meer dan individuen de arbeid opslokken en bij een relatief kleine groep plaatsen. En wat met de opkomende automatisering? Arbeid wordt almaar meer vervangen door geautomatiseerde systemen. Vandaag gaat het bespaarde geld naar de bedrijven, de eigenaars van de robots. Maar je kunt ook zeggen dat het bespaarde geld herverdeeld zou moeten worden onder de mensen die vroeger de arbeid uitvoerden, in de vorm van een gewaarborgd jaarlijks inkomen. Maar we willen niet dat de mensen die zo’n vast jaarlijks inkomen krijgen hele dagen voor hun tv-schermen zitten. Als zij echt werk zouden doen – artistiek of sociaal, dus iets anders dan arbeid – zou dat soms een ‘paradise now’ kunnen zijn?

Michiel, hoe ga jij het materiaal van Paradise Now gebruiken om je eigen productie op te bouwen? Hoe ga je wat vandaag aan de hand is in de wereld erin betrekken?

MV: Ik heb nog maar twee weken gerepeteerd, maar wat ik interessant vind in het originele Paradise Now, is de evolutie van binnen naar buiten. Het publiek zat duidelijk in de traditionele positie, maar werd continu in het stuk getrokken, of het probeerde deel te worden van de voorstelling. Die beweging wil ik behouden. Ik wil ook met de jongeren op zoek gaan naar wat sprituele praktijken in de 21e-eeuw kunnen betekenen, door er nieuwe uit te vinden, door onze verbeelding te gebruiken, en zo misschien zelfs een utopische manier te vinden om samen te leven – wie weet? Ten derde wil ik nadenken over de intimiteit tussen die jonge lichamen. We leven in een vreemde tijd: aan de ene kant gaan we in de publieke ruimte extreem conservatief om met onze lichamen. En aan de andere kant heb je de pornoficatie van reclamecampagnes. We hebben al gewerkt rond dit soort conservatisme, de manier waarop we elkaar benaderen en met onze lichamen omgaan, door de grenzen tussen lichamen open te breken. PARADISE NOW (ALORS ET MAINTENANT) : À PROPOS DU THÉÂTRE RÉVOLUTIONNAIRE MICHIEL VANDEVELDE EN CONVERSATION AVEC RICHARD SCHECHNER (MODÉRÉ PAR KRISTOF VAN BAARLE)

En octobre 2017, le père fondateur des études sur les arts du spectacle vivant, Richard Schechner, et le chorégraphe, danseur et commissaire d’expositions Michiel Vandevelde étaient invités à participer à une conversation qui se déroulait lors de la semaine anniversaire du Kaaitheater et faisait partie d’une série d’entretiens réunis sous le titre de Radio Étoile. Dans une petite serre au milieu du Kaaicafé, artistes, penseurs, conférenciers et journalistes ont réfléchi, lors de sept émissions de radio, sur l’art, les centres d’art et le monde.

La conversation entre Schechner et Vandevelde s’articulait autour du spectacle Paradise Now (1968) du collectif de théâtre états-unien The Living Theatre – fondé en 1947 et toujours existant à ce jour. Richard Schechner a créé le département d’études des arts du spectacle vivant et de la performance à la NYU Tisch School of the Arts et a profondément influencé la manière dont nous étudions et envisageons aujourd’hui le spectacle vivant. Ce qui à son tour a fortement marqué sa propre recherche sur les rituels. Dès les années 60, il était étroitement lié au collectif The Living Theatre.

Au moment de la conversation, Michiel Vandevelde venait d’entamer le processus de création de sa nouvelle pièce de théâtre Paradise Now (1968-2018), enracinée dans le spectacle du Living Theatre de 1968. La pratique de Vandevelde, artiste en résidence au Kaaitheater, est très variée : danse, chorégraphie, écriture, activités discursives, participation à l’équipe artistique du festival bruxellois Bâtard et du centre d’art anversois Extra City.

Jusqu’au mois de mars de cette année, il a également fait partie de l’équipe éditoriale de la revue néerlandophone sur les arts de la scène Etcetera.

Richard, qu’était au juste The Living Theatre ? Et pouvez-vous partager avec nous ce qu’a été l’expérience d’assister au spectacle Paradise Now à l’époque ?

RS : The Living Theatre a vu le jour juste après la Seconde Guerre mondiale, en tant que compagnie de théâtre classique. Un collectif dirigé par Judith Malina et Julian Beck.

Tous deux s’intéressaient à la poésie et aux écrits d’auteurs comme Antonin Artaud et William Carlos Williams. Ils ont réalisé leur première grande percée avec The Connection de Jack Gelber en 1959 et avec The Brig de Kenneth H. Brown : des pièces à la teneur sociale, mises en scène de façon hyperréaliste. En 1964, pendant une représentation, des agents du fisc ont fait incursion dans la salle et ont arrêté les membres du Living Theatre pour défaut de paiement d’impôts. Le public dans la salle – dont je faisais partie – avait le choix : quitter les lieux ou rester et être arrêté. Après cet incident, The Living Theatre a quitté les États-Unis pour l’Europe, hormis certains membres, comme Joseph Chaikin qui a fondé The Open Theatre. En Europe, le collectif s’est politisé et a explicitement embrassé l’anarchisme. Ils ne voulaient pas instituer de nouveau gouvernement, leur révolution consistait à ne pas instituer de gouvernement./Ils s’opposaient à toute forme de gouvernement. Au cœur de leur pensée, il y avait le drapeau noir de l’anarchie et ce qu’ils appelaient « la merveilleuse 13

révolution anarchiste ». C’est en Europe qu’ils ont créé Paradise Now, dans lequel ils ont rompu avec le réalisme et la notion de narration. Les performeurs incarnaient leur propre personnage et racontaient leur parcours de l’esclavage à la libération, de l’ignorance à la connaissance et des ténèbres aux lumières, au sens spirituel du terme. En même temps, ils savaient qu’ils ne pourraient jamais réaliser ce paradis, donc il y avait aussi de la rage et de la frustration de ne pas pouvoir être réellement libres et éclairés. Ce qui m’a le plus frappé à l’époque dans le spectacle tel que je m’en souviens, c’est cette rage et cette intensité mêlées à de l’espoir toujours renvoyé à plus tard.

Ils invitaient le public à les rejoindre, et le public acceptait souvent. Le spectacle a eu lieu en 1968, une période de grands soulèvements et de bouleversements partout dans le monde. Il y a eu les assassinats de Martin Luther King et de Robert Kennedy quelques années après celui de son frère John. Il y a eu le mouvement de la Convention démocratique nationale, les émeutes à Chicago, les manifestations d’étudiants à Mexico et à Paris…

Ces mouvements, portés par la jeunesse, étaient extrêmement optimistes, mais aussi très polarisants. Le mouvement contre le gouvernement était énergique et actif et The Living Theatre l’a soutenu et rejoint. Il en est devenu l’un des chefs de file, entraînant le public dans la rue à la fin de ses spectacles.

Michiel, pour votre reconstitution de Paradise Now, vous allez travailler avec de très jeunes personnes. Quel est l’enjeu de votre vision de ce spectacle ?

MV : J’ai découvert Paradise Now en 2012, par le biais d’une vidéo documentaire, et j’ai été très frappé par cette forme de performativité et cet engagement politique si direct qu’on voit rarement sur scène ces temps-ci. À ce moment-là, j’étais moi-même impliqué dans le mouvement des Indignés ici à Bruxelles et dans le mouvement Occupy à Londres.

Quand une compagnie de théâtre m’a demandé de réaliser quelque chose avec des jeunes, j’ai décidé de travailler sur cette pièce. Je voulais savoir ce qui s’est produit en ces cinquante ans entre 1968 et 2018. À l’époque, il y avait de l’espoir, par exemple. On pouvait encore imaginer l’avenir, alors qu’aujourd’hui imaginer le futur est devenu quasi impossible. Je m’intéresse à la manière dont The Living Theatre a travaillé avec les énergies, les chakras et la spiritualité. Comment intégrer ces éléments dans la création d’une nouvelle sorte de spectacle et que serait un paradis au XXIe siècle ? Je crois que c’est radicalement différent aujourd’hui et que ça ne peut plus être ce que ce fut à l’époque.

RS : Je crois qu’une autre différence cruciale est l’avènement de l’internet et du numérique. Au lieu de descendre dans les rues, nous vivons dans des sociétés toujours plus mondialisées où les gens s’installent devant leurs machines pour établir des contacts.

Ils vivent sur ces machines. Aujourd’hui, nous pensons à un commun numérique et nous avons transformé et réduit l’expérience multisensorielle qui peut nous envelopper à une expérience principalement visuelle. Les révolutions classiques se déroulaient sous l’égide des sens proximaux : le toucher, le goût, l’odorat. Certes, la vue et l’ouïe étaient très importantes, mais plus limitées dans la mesure où les actions ne pouvaient avoir lieu à distance.

Les actions numériques – et nous ignorons encore si une révolution est possible sous ces auspices – se déroulent de manière structurelle à une certaine distance critique. Nos jeunes sont beaucoup plus cyniques dans un bon sens, ironiques, pas « sincères ». The Living Theatre appréciait la sincérité. Contrairement à la vérité – qui est vérifiable par une série de standards scientifiques ou religieux – la sincérité est personnelle. Et c’est ce qui leur importait, la notion de conviction personnelle au lieu de croyance publique ; la sincérité et l’« authenticité » – provenant du for intérieur – comptaient plus que l’idéologie politique – imposée de l’extérieur.

MV : Si je peux me permettre de légèrement vous contredire : pour beaucoup de gens, les machines dont vous parlez sont un facteur de proximité. Et elles ont incité les gens à descendre dans la rue, comme lors des printemps arabes, mais en Europe aussi, les gens 14

continuent à se rassembler. Pensez à Nuit Debout l’année passée. Là où je suis d’accord, c’est que cette technologie exerce une influence énorme, principalement visuelle, une suprématie de l’image, et elle s’adresse à ce qui précède le langage, à l’affect. Nous sommes « affectés » par ce que nous voyons à l’écran. Mais dès que nous commençons à le formuler à travers le langage, tout le mouvement se fissure, s’atomise. Avec pour conséquence une individualisation de l’action politique.

The Living Theatre était une forme de communauté très physique : ils vivaient ensemble, partageaient des valeurs communes et les traduisaient de manière artistique sur scène.

Que représente la collectivité de nos jours et quelle place occupe-t-elle dans le spectacle vivant aujourd’hui ?

MV : Aujourd’hui, à Bruxelles, les communautés ne se rassemblent plus autour d’une idéologie comme dans les années 60, mais il y a toujours de l’action politique, le plus souvent pour des problèmes très concrets. Il n’est donc plus question de « l’ensemble », du global, mais de points spécifiques. Ce que j’observe beaucoup dans l’activisme actuel, c’est qu’il mise sur le juridique. On examine ce que disent précisément les règles et on évalue jusqu’où on peut les étendre. Prenez la Charte pour les artistes de la scène : elle se focalise sur une question très spécifique, à savoir le fait que les artistes sont souvent souspayés à l’égard du travail effectué dans les institutions existantes. Mais la charte ne fait que réaffirmer ce qui a été légalement mis en place, rien d’autre.

RS : Au lieu de la révolution de classe des années 60, nous parlons désormais de redistribution des richesses, de la manière dont les entreprises transnationales plutôt que les individus absorbent la main-d’œuvre et la redistribuent à un petit nombre. Et qu’en est-il de l’automatisation ? Le travail est de plus en plus remplacé par des systèmes automatisés.

Aujourd’hui, l’argent épargné de la sorte va vers les entreprises géantes, propriétaires des robots. Mais on pourrait aussi dire que l’argent ainsi épargné devrait être redistribué aux anciens travailleurs comme revenu annuel garanti. Cette logique distingue le travail – ce qu’on accomplit pour un salaire – de l’activité – par exemple, une activité artistique. Mais nous ne voulons pas que les gens qui bénéficient d’un revenu garanti passent leurs journées assis devant leur télé. Reste à savoir si effectuer une activité réelle – artistique ou sociale, distincte du travail classique – serait un « paradis » ?

Michiel, comment allez-vous utiliser le matériau de Paradise Now pour construire votre nouvelle production ? Comment allez-vous y intégrer ce qui est en jeu dans le monde d’aujourd’hui ?

MV : Je ne répète que depuis deux semaines, mais ce que je trouve intéressant dans le spectacle original est le mouvement de l’intérieur vers l’extérieur. Le public était clairement installé dans la configuration traditionnelle, mais était constamment entraîné dans le spectacle, incité à en faire partie. Je désire maintenir ce mouvement. J’aimerais aussi explorer avec ces jeunes ce que signifient les pratiques spirituelles au XXIe siècle, et en inventer de nouvelles. Faire appel à notre imagination et peut-être inventer une façon utopique de vivre ensemble – qui sait ? Et troisièmement, je crois que je voudrais réfléchir à l’intimité entre ces jeunes corps. On vit une époque étrange, avec d’une part un conservatisme extrême dans l’approche de nos corps dans l’espace public. Et d’autre part, une « pornographisation » des campagnes publicitaires. On a déjà travaillé sur ce conservatisme, la manière dont nous interagissons et dont nous gérons nos corps respectifs en brisant les frontières entre eux. En ce sens, cela rejoint ce que faisait aussi The Living Theatre : devenir réellement partie intégrante les uns des autres. Bien sûr que toutes ces entreprises tentées par The Living Theatre se sont révélées des échecs, mais je crois que c’est précisément ce qui rend ce collectif tellement intéressant.

PARADISE NOW (THEN & NOW): ON REVOLUTIONARY THEATRE MICHIEL VANDEVELDE IN CONVERSATION WITH RICHARD SCHECHNER (MODERATED BY KRISTOF VAN BAARLE)

In October 2017, the founding father of performance studies Richard Schechner and choreographer, dancer and curator Michiel Vandevelde were invited to have a conversation about art, arts centres, and the world. The conversation took place during the Kaaitheater’s 40th anniversary week as part of a series of conversations entitled Radio Etoile. In a little greenhouse in the middle of the Kaaicafé, artists, thinkers, lecturers, and journalists shared their thoughts during live radio broadcasts.

The conversation with Schechner and Vandevelde centred on the performance Paradise Now (1968) by the American theatre collective The Living Theatre, which was founded in 1947 and is still active. Richard Schechner founded the department of performance studies at NYU Tisch School of the Arts and has deeply influenced the way we study and think about performance today, which in turn is strongly marked by his own research on rituals.

He became closely involved in The Living Theatre in the sixties.

Michiel Vandevelde had just started the creation process of his new piece, Paradise Now (1968-2018), which is rooted in the The Living Theatre performance from 1968. His artistic practice is very diverse, including dancing, choreographing, writing, and discursive activities, he is an artist-in-residence at Kaaitheater, and he is part of the artistic team of the Brussels festival Bâtard and the Antwerp venue Extra City. Until March of this year, he was also part of the editorial team of the performance art journal Etcetera.

Richard, what was The Living Theatre precisely? And can you share with us your viewing experience of the Living Theatre’s Paradise Now back then?

RS: The Living Theatre began right after WWII as a “classic art theatre”, a collective lead by Judith Malina and Julian Beck. They were interested in poetry and in work by writers like Antonin Artaud and William Carlos Williams. Their first big breakthroughs were Jack Gelber’s The Connection in 1959, and The Brig by Kenneth H. Brown. The plays were staged in a hyper-realistic way and contained a social concern. In 1964, during a performance, tax agents raided the theatre to arrest The Living Theatre for failure to pay.

Those who were in the theatre – I was there myself too – had to choose whether to stay and be arrested or leave. After that, The Living Theatre left for Europe, except for a few members, like Joseph Chaikin, who started The Open Theatre. Those who left for Europe became overtly political and anarchic. They opposed any form of government. Their core ideas were the black flag of anarchy and they called it the beautiful anarchist revolution.

It was in Europe that they created Paradise Now, in which they began to reject realism and the notion of narrative. The performers represented themselves and were telling the stories of their journey from enslavement to liberation, from ignorance to knowledge and from darkness to enlightenment in the spiritual sense. At the same time, they knew they could never accomplish this paradise, so it was also about the rage and frustration of not being able to be enlightened and not being able to be free. What struck me most about the performance as I recall it at that time was this rage and its intensity, combined with a hope that was always delayed.

They invited the audience to join in, which they often did. This play took place in 1968, a period of great upheaval around the world. There were the assassinations of Robert 18

and John Kennedy and of Martin Luther King. There was the movement of the National Democratic Convention, the disruptions in Chicago, huge student demonstrations in Mexico City and in Paris. These youth movements were extremely optimistic, but also polarizing. The movements against the government were vital, active and The Living Theatre both supported them and joined them. They became a leader for them, bringing people out into the street at the end of their performances.

Michiel, you are going to work with young people in your reworking of Paradise Now. What are the stakes of your take on this piece?

MV: I encountered Paradise Now in 2012 via a video recording and I was very struck by the performativity and straightforward politicalness, which you rarely see on stage these days. At that time, I was also involved in the Indignados movement here in Brussels and the Occupy movement in London. When a theatre company asked me to do something with youngsters, I decided to work with this piece. I want to see what has happened in the fifty years between ’68 and 2018. Back then, for example, there was a kind of hope. They could still think the future, whereas nowadays thinking the future has become almost impossible.

I’m interested in how The Living Theatre worked with energy, with chakras and spirituality.

How can we work with this in the creation of a new kind of performance and what would be a ‘paradise now’ for the 21st century? I think it would have to be something radically different, which cannot be what it was back then.

RS: I think another crucial difference is the advent of the internet and digitalization.

Instead of coming into the streets, we now have increasingly global societies, in which people go on to their machines in order to make contact. And they live on these machines.

Today we think of a digital commons and we have transformed and reduced the multisensorial experience, by which we can be surrounded, to a largely visual experience. The classical revolution occurred under the aegis of the proximal senses: touch, taste, smell.

Sight and sound were also very important, of course, but more limited as the actions couldn’t occur at a distance. Digital actions – and we don’t yet know if a revolution is possible on these auspices – occurs structurally at a certain kind of critical distance. Our young people are much more cynical in a good sense, ironic, not ‘sincere’. The Living Theatre valued sincerity as an opposite of truth – which is verifiable by a set of standards, such as scientific or religious ones – whereas sincerity is personal. For them, the notion of this personal belief counted, rather than the public belief, of sincerity and “authenticity”, rather than political ideology.

MV: If I may contest a little bit: for a lot of people the machines you’re talking about also bring proximity. And they have made people come out on the streets, such as in the Arab Spring, but also still gather in Europe. Think of the Nuit Debout a year ago. Where I do agree is that this technology has a huge influence: it is mostly image-based and it mostly speaks to what comes before language. It speaks about affect. We are affected by something we see on our screen. But the moment we start to phrase it within language, the whole movement splits up. You get an individuation of political action.

The Living Theatre was a very physical form of community: they lived together, they propagated the community values and translated them onto the stage artistically.

What is collectivism today and what role does it play in their performances?

MV: Communities in Brussels today are no longer assembled by ideology, as they were in the sixties, but political action does still take place, mostly for very concrete problems. So it is not about the ‘whole’ anymore, but about specific issues. Activism nowadays is very concerned with jurisdiction. You look at the precise rules and to what extent they can be bent and stretched. The Charter for Stage Artists, for example, focuses on a very specific problem, namely the fact that artists are often unfairly paid for the work they do in existing 19

institutions. But the charter doesn’t do anything other than reaffirm what has already been legally put in place.

RS: Instead of the class revolution of the sixties, we’re now talking about redistribution of wealth: how transnational corporations rather than individuals suck up the profit of the labour force and it remains in relatively few hands. And there is the question of increasing automation. Labour is increasingly being replaced by automated systems. Today the money saved goes to the corporations, the robot owners. But one might also say that the money saved should be redistributed to the people who were former workers, as a guaranteed annual income. This logic distinguishes labour – what you do and get paid for – from work, like artistic work. But we don’t want the people who are guaranteed an automatic income simply to sit in front of their television screens all day. If they were to do real work, be it artistic or social, as distinct from labour, would that be a ‘paradise now’?

Michiel, how are you going to use the Paradise Now material to build your new performance? How are you going to involve what is at stake in the world today?

MV: I have only been rehearsing for two weeks now, but what I find interesting in the original Paradise Now is the movement from in to out. The audience was clearly sitting in the traditional position, but they were constantly dragged in or tried to become part of the performance. I want to maintain this movement. I’m also interested in exploring the meaning of spiritual practices in the 21st century with these young people, perhaps by inventing new ones. We will use our imaginations and maybe even invent a utopic way of living together – who knows? Thirdly, I want to think about the intimacy between these young bodies. We live in a strange time in which, on the one hand, we see an extreme conservatism in how we deal with our bodies in the public space. But on the other hand, we see the hyper-sexualisation of advertising campaigns. We’ve already worked on this conservatism, the way we approach each other and deal with our bodies, by breaking boundaries between bodies. And in that sense, it connects to what The Living Theatre was also doing: really becoming part of each other. Of course, The Living Theatre failed in all these enterprises, but I think this failure is exactly what makes it so interesting.

IT IS STILL RAINING ON FRANCISCO CAMACHO DANCE CRITIC INÊS NADAIS SPOKE TO MEG STUART, BEFORE LAST YEAR’S REPRISAL OF BLESSED IN PORTO AND LISBON.

Ten years after the premiere of BLESSED – a solo created especially for the Portuguese dancer Francisco Camacho – Meg Stuart is bringing the show back to Porto and Lisbon.

The piece has aged well, she says; the world not so much.

When Meg Stuart first saw the rain fall on the pocket-sized model that scenographer Doris Dziersk showed her, which immediately became the most auspicious beginnings of a new piece, it did not carry the cataclysmic violence of the environmental apocalypse that it is now impossible to miss in BLESSED. But even that rain falling in droplets from a small sprinkler was enough to destroy an entire world in minutes, Doris assured her. Doris had the idea of working with cardboard and water after spending time in Latin America, with its eternally precarious, eternally temporary cities, which we all believe to be unreal until we actually go there.

Meg Stuart believed in her. At first, the apocalyptic devastation that Hurricane Katrina caused in New Orleans, where the American choreographer and dancer was born and raised, and which she thought should have been the most solid and indestructible city of all, had also seemed like a hallucination. It was 2006 (BLESSED had its debut in Ghent in March the following year) and it was impossible not to associate the proposed installation on the table in front of her with the shock of that disaster, seen in real life, during those unimaginable days in late August 2005.

‘At that time, I kept thinking about how absurd it was that all the assistance in the days after Katrina failed – the whole structure failed – and about the extreme experience of losing everything from one moment to the next. You have your wonderful world, or at least your world, and then suddenly that falls apart… How do you react? How do you live with that? How do you keep your faith? What do you believe in? I couldn’t get those questions out of my head,’ she tells Público from Berlin, days before bringing the solo performance back to Portugal.

But at the same time, she goes on, other things were coming into her head: ‘The favelas in Brazil; the homeless people on the streets in our cities; the disaster tourism that leads people to want to visit the most devastated places in Haiti; or… Most of all, I was intrigued by people’s resistance. I wanted to understand how we keep going in spite of everything; what it is that keeps us going.’

During those days, there was something else she couldn’t get out of her head: the body of Francisco Camacho – one of the most exceptional she had encountered in the late 80s, just before she became a choreographer. In fact, she has seen few like it to this day. She couldn’t imagine the rain, which she wanted to cascade down on stage, falling on anyone in the world as well as it would fall on him; there was no one capable of inhabiting, with such mystery and authenticity – holding on as though there were no tomorrow – the little cardboard paradise (a hut, a swan and a palm tree) that we see collapsing before our eyes like something out of a disaster movie, over the course of 70 minutes.

‘That was a long time ago… But I still remember being in New York in those early years, to dance and teach, and someone – I don’t know who – telling me that there was a very special, strong dancer that I had to meet. He did a few things with me in the studio and then, when I went to Leuven to do my first piece, Disfigure Study (1991), I wanted him to be one of the performers. The way he moved was exceptionally intelligent, very precise and very well crafted; he moved with incredible presence, and he still does,’ the choreographer tells Público. Since then, they have been in constant contact (Camacho was her assistant on UNTIL OUR HEARTS STOP, which premiered in 2015), but it wasn’t until 2006 that Meg Stuart finally got her hands on the perfect setting for a solo by Francisco Camacho.

BLESSED was the piece that she created especially for him and it is, perhaps, even more enjoyable seeing him perform it now than it was ten years ago.

ENDURING To recap: a man, a hut, a swan, a palm tree and the unrelenting rain that still falls on them ten years on. A hurricane named Katrina and a president called Donald Trump (who would have this to say on Twitter about the Paris Agreement: ‘Covfefe’). ‘The world is worse than ever; we are not doing well at all. In 2007, the phenomenon of global warming was still just beginning. Suddenly, it seems that everything has got alarmingly more precarious,’ says Meg Stuart. But she didn’t want to put the weight of that on BLESSED, which actually has a heartening and overtly religious title (if we see a god moving out there, it is not a hallucination). It seems to say: fear not, water is a saviour; it washes away the sins of the world.

Before salvation, however, an entire little universe will undergo harsh punishment: the hut, the swan, the palm tree and the only inhabitant of this lost paradise. ‘I wanted to see how Francisco would handle the heavy adversity of that rain over time. The piece was being written as we were looking at how he danced before and after the water, and how much time it would all last – his resistance, and the resistance of the materials,’ Meg Stuart tells us. Francisco Camacho’s body endured – we all endure. ‘As a performer, Francisco doesn’t allow much of himself to be seen. On stage, he has a very strong presence, but one that does not seem to be associated with an ego. That is why it is easy for us to project ourselves onto him but difficult to grasp him completely. He doesn’t throw his distinctiveness out to the public. Quite the opposite: he lets the public step into that world; into that fantasy.’

He was the ideal soloist for a choreographer with a preference for ‘multifocal’ group pieces in which a lot happens to a lot of people at the same time, or, indeed, for her own solo performances. ‘With Francisco you can work with small, subtle, precise movements; he essentially lets the movement move through him.’ None of that has been lost ten years on.

‘It’s all still there and it’s still just as strong… I think seeing him do this piece now that he is ten years older makes it more real and emotive; more poignant. For me, it’s lovely to watch a mature performer in action and witness a life experience play out on stage. Politically, I think it is important for dance not to be a place just for twenty-somethings. It is important for me to be able to continue dancing too.’

At the age of 52, something keeps her going.

De uitgesproken vitale voorstelling werd één van de hoogtepunten van het voorbije seizoen, en haalde gezwind de selectie van het TheaterFestival. Geef je samen met de dansers opnieuw over aan Coltranes spirituele ode aan de goddelijke liefde!

En 2017, Salva Sanchis et Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker ont retravaillé A Love Supreme avec quatre jeunes danseurs.

Le spectacle résolument énergique était l’un des sommets de la saison passée et a d’emblée été sélectionné pour le TheaterFestival. Abandonnez-vous une fois de plus avec les danseurs à l’ode spirituelle de Coltrane au divin amour !

Along with Rosas dancers, the children will take their first tentative steps into the world of dance. Tempo, improvisation, limberness, and body control are the central focuses of this swinging workshop set to the saxophone sounds of John Coltrane. Meanwhile, the little ones (0-4y) have fun in the playroom.

Ook in de Kaaistudio’s presenteren ze eindejaarsprojecten. Interesse in aanstormend jong theatermakerstalent van diverse pluimage? Feedback en support zijn meer dan welkom.

Une nouvelle promotion de créateurs achèvent leurs études. Tout au long du mois de juin, dans divers lieux à Bruxelles, vous pouvez assister à des moments de présentation publique des étudiants en théâtre de la RITCS School of Arts. Aux Kaaistudio’s, ils présentent également des projets de fin d’études. Vous vous intéressez au jeune talent émergent de tout genre ? Vos réactions et votre soutien sont plus que les bienvenus.

In My Dinner with André schuiven Damiaan De Schrijver en Peter Van den Eede aan tafel voor een viergangenmaaltijd. Terwijl de ene een nuchtere humanist is, oreert de andere uitvoerig over zijn extravagante spirituele ervaringen. RE:RITE

The Monastery is coming to the Kaaistudios for the fourth time, to close the RE:RITE season and guide you through the transition from spring to summer with a final day of rituals. You can join this experimental spiritual urban community for one ritual or for the whole day, to become conscious of your entire being and of everything going on around you. The rituals during this closing event are focused on ‘Buying Time’: how can we redefine our approach to time and our perception of public space.

Als fin de saison brengt het gelegenheidscollectief Lucinda Ra een driedaags open atelier. Je kunt vrij binnen- en buitenlopen, je mengen in gesprekken, of gewoon luisteren en kijken naar muziek, (animatie)films, korte voorstellingen en beeldend werk.

To close this season, the occasional collective Lucinda Ra is organizing an open studio for three days. You are free to come in and out, join the conversations, or just to listen and watch the music, animated films, short presentations, and visual work.

The kitchen – which forms the heart of the project – will be open throughout and is free. You contribute your own ingredients: a ticket for Grondwerk costs 250 grams of food.

RE:RITE

Comme fin de saison, le collectif de circonstance Lucinda Ra propose un atelier ouvert pendant trois jours. On peut y entrer et en sortir à sa convenance, se mêler aux conversations ou simplement écouter et regarder ; il y aura de la musique, des films (d’animation), de brefs spectacles et des œuvres plastiques.
