Wat is geluk? In welke donkere en afgelegen hoeken moeten we ons individueel én collectief begeven om het te vinden? Samen met dansers van EnKnapGroup creëren Pavol Liska en Kelly Copper een bizarre, pijnlijke en hilarische horrorkomedie over de expansiedrift in het Wilde Westen – en al het geweld dat daar bij kwam kijken.

Qu’est le bonheur ? Dans quels recoins obscurs et reculés faut-il se rendre individuellement et collectivement pour le trouver ?

Voor deze ambitieuze groepschoreografie beet Daniel Linehan zich vast in Stravinsky’s Le Sacre du Printemps. Hij koos voor de prachtige versie voor twee piano’s, die live wordt uitgevoerd door Jean-Luc Plouvier (van Ictus) en Alain Franco. Zelf neem je plaats vlakbij de dertien dansers en de pianisten – een nabijheid die zorgt voor een collectief gedeelde energie.

Pour cette ambitieuse chorégraphie de groupe, Daniel Linehan s’attaquait à Le Sacre du Printemps de Stravinsky. Il a choisi la magnifique version pour deux pianos interprétée sur scène par Jean-Luc Plouvier (Ictus) et Alain Franco. Le public prend place à proximité immédiate des treize danseurs et les pianistes, ce qui génère une énergie collective partagée.

THE MONASTERY ONTVLUCHT DE DICTATUUR VAN DE KRITIEK IN GESPREK MET MONNIK ELKE VAN CAMPENHOUT/ELLE

Tijdens dit seizoen in het teken van rituelen, zijn het niet enkel artiesten die het Kaaitheaterprogramma bezetten. De spirituele stadsgemeenschap The Monastery staat bijvoorbeeld vier keer in de Kaaistudio’s.

Telkens ben je welkom om mee te stappen in het monniksleven: voor één ritueel of de hele dag. Maar wat is dat eigenlijk, zo’n monniksleven?

Wat doet een spirituele gemeenschap in een theaterhuis? En welke plek nemen rituelen en spiritualiteit tout court nog in in onze samenleving?

Tijd voor een diepgravend gesprek met monnik Elle.

Je hebt een uiteenlopend parcours afgelegd, met een achtergrond in jazz, filosofie en performance studies, en als critica en oprichter van het post-master and PhD-programma in de kunsten a.pass. Hoe ben je uiteindelijk in The Monastery beland?

The Monastery is in de eerste plaats het resultaat van een ontmoeting tussen twee mensen met een zelfde ongewoon verlangen om een klooster op te richten: Stijn Smeets en ik. Mijn parcours als coördinator van a.pass en als artistiek onderzoeker ging oorspronkelijk over andere manieren van denken over wat de politieke ‘wij’ vandaag zou kunnen zijn. Mijn onderzoek – onder de noemer ‘Bureau d’Espoir’ – wilde kijken naar andere manieren om hoop te creëren in een samenleving, in het samenkomen van zeer diverse invloeden zonder vooropgesteld plan of leidende ideologie.

Ik was op zoek naar een manier om beweging te creëren in het sociale weefsel. Niet zozeer als een synchrone beweging van individuen, maar eerder als een zwerm die samenkomt en zich telkens reorganiseert doorheen de tijd. Via dit onderzoek naar hoop ontdekte ik een pad dat weg liep van het idee dat dingen te onderscheiden zijn als wel of niet ‘zinvol’ of ‘waardevol’.

Ik kom uit de performance- en danswereld. Wat het lichaam is en hoe het werkt, zijn daar belangrijke vragen. Toen ik ging kijken naar spirituele praktijken waarin het lichaam centraal staat, wou ik weten hoe de technologie van het lichaam – hoe adem ik, hoe beweeg ik, hoe ben ik fysiek en energetisch gelieerd aan de ander? – kan helpen om mentale ruimte en beweging te creëren. Om hoop te genereren.

Vanuit dat idee besloot ik om een jaar lang alles wat me als spirituele praktijk werd voorgesteld te aanvaarden. Die spirituele praktijk – en vooral tantra – werd al snel steeds belangrijker voor mij. Aan het einde van mijn traject bij a.pass gaf ik onder de naam ‘The Mobile MNSTRY’ – in samenwerking met de werkplaats Bains Connective – een workshop rond monastieke praktijk in de openbare ruimte, in en rondom de abdij van Vorst. De discrepantie tussen mijn kritisch-artistieke-werk binnen a.pass en mijn spirituele praktijk kwam hierdoor op scherp te staan. In The Mobile MNSTRY ontmoette ik trouwens Stijn, waarna de eerste plannen voor The Monastery ontstonden.

Waar bevindt die discrepantie tussen het artistiek-intellectuele en het spirituele zich volgens jou?

Ik ben begonnen als critica. Een kritisch perspectief op hedendaagse experimentele kunst en het artistieke onderzoek stond op dat moment centraal. Onderscheid maken, verschillen duiden, het discours over macht, queerness, gender, wie spreekt op welke manier 10

en vanuit welke positie… Na tien jaar a.pass begon die kritische inslag voor mij eerder storend dan inspirerend te werken.

Sinds het begin van de 20e eeuw zit de kunst in een soort constante feedback loop, een resonantie van kritiek op kritiek, van zelfreflectie en ondermijning. In deze kritische tijd zijn dingen als schoonheid, harmonie en originaliteit niet langer vanzelfsprekend. Er moet altijd iets tegenwringen. Hoewel ik zelf ook voor een spiritueel pad heb gekozen dat over confrontatie gaat, kreeg ik de indruk dat niet alleen kunstenaars hinder ondervinden door dictatuur van de kritiek, maar dat ik ook zelf als mens niet meer kon groeien.

Neem nu de muziek die we samen in The Monastery maken. Die voldoet niet aan bepaalde artistieke waarden en ik zou er zelf nooit naar luisteren. Maar het werkt in de rituelen om een gemeenschap samen te creëren, om verbinding te maken en in een andere staat van zijn te komen.

Heb je radicaal gebroken met de kunstwereld of zijn er elementen die een weg hebben gevonden naar je spirituele praktijk?

Ik wou het zelf graag zien als een radicale breuk, maar ik hoor vaak dat The Monastery toch heel wat overeenkomsten vertoont met a.pass. Zo zijn er de horizontale organisatiestructuur, de transspiritualiteit, de queerness of practice, de afwezigheid van een leidersfiguur… (lacht) Mijn onderzoek naar wat een gemeenschap of een ‘wij’ is, blijft inderdaad lopen. Hoe maak je een gemeenschap waarin mogelijkheden ontstaan?

Eigenlijk gaat het over esthetiek: hoe organiseer je tijd en ruimte, en welke ethiek produceert die esthetiek?

Net zoals de a.pass-onderzoekers hun pad volgen, vertrekken de monniken in The Monastery ook vanuit eigen overtuigingen. Hierin verschillen we van een regulier klooster. Er is geen doctrinaire waarheid en inhoudelijk blijft alles open: wat je gelooft of niet gelooft kies je zelf. We delen eerder een praktijk van spirituele routine: van zitten, zingen, dansen en discussiëren. Je merkt dat een gemeenschap gemakkelijk uit elkaar valt wanneer je waarheden en onwaarheden begint te bediscussiëren. Volgens mij is iedere spirituele uitleg over wat ‘het’ nu is, problematisch. Ik vind het prima om er omheen te lopen en paaltjes te zetten, maar je moet die paaltjes ook kunnen verzetten. Het zijn hulpmiddelen, geen waarheden.

Je zei net al dat The Monastery transspiritueel is, maar waar hebben jullie de mosterd gehaald? Zijn er bepaalde stromingen of scholen die je kunt aanduiden?

We zijn begonnen vanuit onze eigen ervaring met monastieke plekken. Stijn komt uit een christelijke monastieke traditie, maar botste met bepaalde kerkdoctrines. Ik had vooral ervaring met het boeddhistische klooster van de Vietnamese monk Thích Nhat Hanh in Bordeaux, een praktijkcentrum voor mindfulness. Maar ik kon daar niet verder met de negatie van lichaam en seksualiteit. Zo ben ik op het tantrische pad beland, waar het lichaam wel geïntegreerd is in spiritualiteit. Onze praktijken zijn een combinatie van deze tradities, maar er zijn ook andere invloeden zoals sjamanisme en sufisme. Elke nieuwe resident of monnik kan ook nieuwe praktijken voorstellen.

Hoe ziet een doordeweekse dag er uit voor jullie? En met hoeveel monniken zijn jullie in The Monastery?

Onze dag begint altijd om 6:00, en eindigt na de avondceremonie rond 22:00 waarna iedereen de stilte respecteer tot na het ontbijt van de volgende dag. Stijn en ik zijn de twee enige full-time monniken die hun geloftes hebben afgelegd. Daarnaast hebben we momenteel drie langdurige residenten, die geen geloftes hebben afgelegd maar wel in een spiritueel kader willen leven. Soms hebben we ook residenten die voor een korte periode komen. Dit zijn vooral mensen die doorheen een moeilijke periode 11

gaan, zoals een burn-out of een scheiding. Hun voornaamste focus ligt op healing.

Wat de monniken absoluut niet mogen missen zijn de ochtend- en avondrituelen.

In de ochtend zijn dat body practice, een theeceremonie, zitmeditatie en karma yoga. De avondrituelen bestaan uit het lezen van bronteksten, terugdenken over de dag, etcetera.

Ook de langdurige residenten doen hieraan mee.

Daarnaast heb je de studie- en werktijd. Als monnik vul je die zoveel mogelijk in in relatie tot je monastieke praktijk. Studietijd betekent dat je een praktijk oefent of teksten leest, die te maken hebben met jouw spiritualiteit. Dit kan heel ruim zijn. De werktijd draait om werk voor de gemeenschap. Stijn werkt met cognitief begaafde kinderen en jongeren aan de universiteit in Leuven, wat zijn dienst naar de gemeenschap is. Dit is niet altijd even eenvoudig, omdat je in de logica van een heel ander instituut terecht komt.

Ikzelf heb gekozen om mijn werk uitsluitend binnen The Monastery te verrichten, zoals met mijn tantrapraktijk en workshops. Buitenshuis werk ik in naam van The Monastery.

Dit seizoen stonden jullie al twee keer in de Kaaistudio’s met de seizoenwissels, en er komen nog twee sessies aan. Waarom hebben jullie toegezegd op dit voorstel van het Kaaitheater?

We hebben heel lang gepraat over de vraag of terugkeren naar een artistieke instelling echt zin had. Ik vond het verwarrend om opnieuw geconfronteerd te worden met die zo centraal staande kritische blik – die ik heb losgelaten. Stijn zag het vooral als een mogelijkheid om The Monastery meer zuurstof te geven. En om mensen te bereiken die niet zo snel de drempel van een klooster zouden overstappen. Zelf ben ik uiteindelijk heel blij met onze beslissing. We werken heel hard aan die rituelen, met nieuwe muziek, teksten en vormen.

Normaal gezien zouden we nooit zoveel tijd kunnen vrijmaken om creatief te werken voor The Monastery.

Het brengt ons ook in interessante situaties: Robin is bijvoorbeeld een mindfulnessbeoefenaar met wetenschappelijke en cognitieve interesses. Ik ben dan weer een tantrabeoefenaar. Hoe je praktiseert, mensen aanspreekt, met verbeelding werkt, of waar je het werk situeert kan voor ons een wereld van verschil zijn. Aan de oppervlakte zijn we het over heel wat dingen eens, maar eens je inzoomt op de technologie van het lichaam merk je dat verschillende praktijken wel degelijk beantwoorden aan verschillende mens- en wereldbeelden. Dat is exact de uitdaging die we willen aangaan: in hoeverre biedt spirituele praktijk een uitkomst uit het duale denken van goed of slecht, juist of fout, waardevol of niet. En op welk punt komt het oordeel toch weer langs de achterdeur naar binnen?...

Op 9 en 10 maart komt The Monastery terug naar de Kaaistudio’s, in het kader van WoWmen! Wat mogen we ditmaal verwachten?

We maken een combinatie van het vieren van de lente en de queerness of practice. In tantrische praktijken gaat het vaak over de polariteit van mannelijke en vrouwelijke energie, maar is er vrij weinig interesse in gender politics of queerness. Interessant genoeg gaan de oude tantrische teksten evenmin over het verschil tussen man en vrouw, maar over energieën en ontologische krachten. In sommige tantrische praktijken is er dus een conservatisme geslopen, waar ik kritisch mee om wil gaan.

Dit onderwerp behandel ik trouwens ook buiten de WoWmen!-sessie: in de thuisbasis van The Monastery geef ik een reeks workshops over vrouwelijke archetypes, voor vrouwen, mannen én zij die die opdeling al lang achter zich hebben gelaten. In klassieke tantrische praktijken is dit niet voor de hand liggend en moet er vaak een gelijk aantal mannen en vrouwen zijn die in koppel werken. Die genderstereotypering kunnen we gerust doorbreken, al is dat niet altijd even simpel voor de deelnemers.

THE MONASTERY FUIT LA DICTATURE DE LA CRITIQUE UN ENTRETIEN AVEC LA MONIALE ELKE VAN CAMPENHOUT/ELLE

Au cours de cette saison inscrite sous le signe du rituel, il n’y a pas que des artistes à l’affiche du Kaaitheater. La communauté spirituelle urbaine The Monastery est, par exemple, à quatre reprises à l’affiche des Kaaistudio’s.

Vous êtes chaque fois les bienvenus à vous joindre à la vie monacale : pour un seul rituel ou pour la journée. Mais que signifie en fait cette vie monacale ?

Que fait une communauté spirituelle dans un théâtre ? Et quelle place occupent d’ailleurs les rituels et la spiritualité dans notre société ?

Il est temps d’engager une discussion profonde avec la moniale Elle.

Vous avez effectué un parcours varié, avec des antécédents dans le jazz, la philosophie et des études de performance. Puis vous avez exercé la profession de critique et cofondé le programme de doctorat en Arts a.pass. Comment avez-vous abouti dans The Monastery ?

The Monastery est en premier lieu le fruit d’une rencontre entre deux personnes avec un désir commun et inhabituel de fonder un monastère : Stijn Smeets et moi-même.

Mon parcours de coordinatrice d’a.pass et de chercheuse artistique concernait à l’origine des modes de penser différents sur ce que le « nous » politique peut signifier de nos jours.

Ma recherche – sous le dénominateur de Bureau d’Espoir – avait pour objectif d’observer les manières différentes de créer de l’espoir dans une société, et ce dans une convergence d’influences sans projet préalable ni idéologie dirigeante.

J’étais en quête d’une façon de créer du mouvement dans le tissu social. Non pas un mouvement synchrone d’individus, mais plutôt un essaim qui se réunit et se réorganise à chaque fois au fil du temps. Par le biais de cette recherche d’espoir, j’ai découvert la voie qui menait à l’idée de discerner les choses selon qu’elles « font sens et sont valables » ou pas.

Je viens du monde de la performance et de la danse. Les questions essentielles y sont : qu’est-ce que le corps et comment fonctionne-t-il ? Lorsque je suis allée observer des pratiques spirituelles dans lesquelles le corps est central, j’ai voulu savoir comment la technologie du corps – la respiration, le mouvement, les liens physiques et énergétiques aux autres – peut contribuer à créer de l’espace et du mouvement mental. Afin de générer de l’espérance.

Partant de cette idée, j’ai décidé d’accepter, un an durant, tout ce qui me serait présenté comme pratique spirituelle. Cette pratique spirituelle – en particulier le tantra – a rapidement pris de plus en plus d’importance pour moi. À la fin de mon trajet à a.pass, j’animais un atelier – en collaboration avec l’espace de travail Bains Connective – qui portait le nom The Mobile MNSTRY et qui s’articulait autour d’une pratique monastique dans l’espace public, dans et autour de l’abbaye de Forest. Le hiatus entre mon travail de critique artistique au sein d’a.pass et ma pratique spirituelle s’en est trouvé exacerbé.

C’est d’ailleurs lors d’un atelier The Mobile MNSTRY que j’ai rencontré Stijn. Peu après les premiers projets de création de The Monastery ont germé.

Où se situe le hiatus entre le domaine artistique intellectuel et le spirituel d’après vous ?

J’ai entamé ma carrière en tant que critique. Une perspective critique sur l’art contemporain expérimental et la recherche artistique était au cœur de mes préoccupations à cette époque. Discerner, expliquer les différences, disséquer le discours sur le pouvoir, la 13

condition queer, le genre, observer de quelle façon tout cela s’exprime et à partir de quelle position… Au bout de dix ans d’a.pass, cette trame critique a fini par avoir un effet plus dérangeant qu’inspirant.

Depuis le début du XXe siècle, l’art se situe dans une sorte de boucle constante de feed-back : une résonance de critique sur la critique, d’introspection et de sape. En ces temps complexes, des notions comme la beauté, l’harmonie et l’originalité ne sont plus du tout évidentes. Il faut toujours que quelque chose fasse obstacle, prenne le contre-pied. Bien que j’aie moi-même opté pour une voie spirituelle qui traite d’affrontement, j’avais l’impression qu’il n’y avait pas que les artistes qui se sentaient incommodés par la dictature de la critique, mais que moi-même, en tant qu’être humain, je ne pouvais plus évoluer non plus.

Prenez la musique que nous jouons ensemble à The Monastery : elle ne répond pas à certaines valeurs artistiques et je ne l’écouterais jamais, mais dans les rituels qui créent une communauté, elle fonctionne, elle génère du lien et permet d’atteindre un autre état de conscience.

Avez-vous rompu radicalement avec le monde de l’art ou y a-t-il des éléments qui ont trouvé la voie vers votre pratique spirituelle ?

Je voulais le voir comme une rupture radicale, mais j’entends souvent que The Monastery présente pas mal d’analogies avec a.pass : la structure organisationnelle horizontale, la transspiritualité, le caractère queer de la pratique, l’absence d’une figure dirigeante… (rit) Ma recherche de ce qu’est une communauté ou un « nous » se poursuit. Comment fonder une collectivité au sein de laquelle des possibilités émergent ? Au fond, il s’agit d’esthétique : comment organise-t-on du temps et de l’espace ? Quelle éthique produit cette esthétique ?

De même que les chercheurs d’a.pass suivent leur voie, les moines de The Monastery partent aussi de leurs convictions intimes. En cela, nous différons d’un monastère classique : aucune vérité doctrinaire et sur le plan du contenu, tout reste ouvert, chacun choisit ce qu’il ou elle croit ou ne croit pas. Nous partageons plutôt une pratique qu’une routine spirituelle : s’asseoir, chanter, danser et discuter. On remarque qu’une communauté se disloque très vite dès qu’on commence à discuter de vérités et de non-vérités. Selon moi, toute explication spirituelle de ce dont il s’agit vraiment est problématique. Je trouve parfait de jalonner un parcours et de le contourner, mais il faut pouvoir déplacer ces jalons.

Ce sont des outils, non pas des vérités.

Vous disiez que The Monastery est « transspirituel », mais quelle est votre source ?

Pouvez-vous nous indiquer certains courants ou écoles ?

Nous avons commencé par nos propres expériences de lieux monastiques. Stijn est issu d’une tradition monastique chrétienne, mais s’est heurté à certaines doctrines ecclésiastiques. Moi, j’avais surtout une certaine expérience du monastère bouddhiste du moine vietnamien Thích Nhat Hanh à Bordeaux, un centre de pratique de la pleine conscience. Mais j’ai fini par y buter contre la négation du corps et de la sexualité. C’est ainsi que j’ai atterri sur la voie tantrique qui intègre le corps à la spiritualité. Nos pratiques sont une combinaison de ces traditions, mais d’autres influences s’y mêlent aussi, comme le chamanisme et le soufisme. Aussi tout nouveau résident ou moine peut proposer une pratique encore inédite dans The Monastery. À quoi ressemble une journée de la vie courante pour vous ? Combien de moines et de moniales y a-t-il à The Monastery ?

Notre journée commence toujours à 6 heures du matin et s’achève après la cérémonie du soir vers 22 heures. Ensuite, tout le monde respecte le silence jusqu’après le petitdéjeuner du lendemain matin. Stijn et moi sommes les deux seuls moines à plein temps 14

qui avons prononcé nos vœux. Du reste, nous avons actuellement trois résidents de longue durée, qui n’ont pas prononcé leurs vœux, mais souhaitent néanmoins vivre dans un cadre spirituel. Parfois, nous accueillons aussi des résidents de courte durée. Il s’agit surtout de personnes qui passent une période difficile, comme un burn-out ou une séparation. Ils se focalisent principalement sur un processus de guérison.

Ce que les moines ne peuvent en aucun cas rater, ce sont les rituels du matin et du soir. Le matin, ce sont des pratiques physiques, la cérémonie du thé, une méditation assise et une séance de yoga karmique. Les rituels du soir se composent de lectures de textes sources, de réflexion sur la journée passée, etc. Les résidents à long terme y participent aussi.

Par ailleurs, on consacre du temps à l’étude et au travail. En tant que moine, on le remplit autant que faire se peut par ce qui touche à une pratique spirituelle. Le temps d’étude signifie qu’on exerce une pratique ou lise des textes qui se rapportent à sa spiritualité.

Cela peut être très vaste. Le temps de travail est consacré à la communauté. Stijn travaille avec des enfants et des adolescents précoces sur le plan cognitif à l’Université de Louvain, ce qui constitue sa contribution à la communauté. Ce n’est pas toujours simple, parce qu’on se retrouve dans la logique d’un institut totalement différent. Moi-même, j’ai choisi d’exercer mes activités uniquement au sein de The Monastery, comme ma pratique tantrique et mes ateliers. Et en dehors de la maison, je travaille au nom de The Monastery.

Cette saison, vous étiez à deux reprises déjà les hôtes des Kaaistudio’s lors des changements de saison, et deux sessions sont encore au programme. Pourquoi avez-vous accepté la proposition du Kaaitheater ?

Nous avons longuement parlé de la question si retourner dans une institution artistique faisait réellement sens. Je trouvais troublant d’à nouveau me trouver aux prises avec ce regard critique si central – que j’ai lâché. Stijn le voyait surtout comme une possibilité d’offrir une bouffée d’oxygène à The Monastery. Et d’atteindre des personnes qui ne franchiraient pas si vite le seuil d’un monastère. Finalement, je suis très contente de notre décision. Nous travaillons intensément à ces rituels, avec de la nouvelle musique, de nouveaux textes, de nouvelles formes. En temps normal, nous ne pourrions jamais libérer autant de temps à travailler à être créatif pour The Monastery.

Cela nous mène à des situations intéressantes : Robin, par exemple, pratique la pleine conscience, avec un angle d’intérêt scientifique et cognitif. Moi, je pratique le tantra. La façon dont on pratique, dont on s’adresse aux gens, dont on travaille avec son imagination, où l’on situe le travail… Tout cela peut représenter un monde de différence. Nous sommes d’accord sur bon nombre de choses à la surface, mais dès qu’on se penche de plus près sur la technologie du corps, on se rend compte que des techniques différentes répondent bel et bien à des idées différentes de l’être humain et du monde. Et c’est exactement le défi que nous voulons relever : dans quelle mesure la pratique spirituelle offre-t-elle une réponse à la pensée duale du bien et du mal, du juste ou du faux, du valable ou pas. Et à quel niveau, le jugement s’infiltre-t-il quand même par une porte dérobée… ?

Les 9 et 10 mars prochains, The Monastery revient aux Kaaistudio’s, dans le cadre de WoWmen! À quoi peut-on s’attendre cette fois ?

Une combinaison de la célébration du printemps et du caractère queer de la pratique.

Dans des pratiques tantriques, il est souvent question de la polarité de l’énergie masculine et féminine, mais il y a peu d’intérêt pour la politique du genre ou la condition queer. Il est intéressant de noter que les anciens textes tantriques ne traitent pas de la différence entre hommes et femmes, mais entre énergies et forces ontologiques. Dans certaines pratiques tantriques s’est insinué un conservatisme certain, que je veux aborder d’un regard critique.

J’aborde également ce sujet en dehors de la session de WoWmen! : dans le port d’attache de The Monastery, j’anime une série d’ateliers sur les archétypes féminins et ceux-ci s’adressent 15

aux femmes, aux hommes, et à ceux qui ont depuis longtemps abandonné cette subdivision.

Dans les pratiques tantriques classiques, ce n’est pas évident et souvent, il faut un nombre égal d’hommes et femmes qui travaillent en couple. Ces classifications de genre peuvent être dépassées, transcendées, même si ce n’est pas toujours aussi simple pour les participants.

THE MONASTERY ESCAPES THE DICTATORSHIP OF CRITIQUE A CONVERSATION WITH MONK ELKE VAN CAMPENHOUT/ELLE

In this ritual-themed season, Kaaitheater is not only welcoming artists.

For example, the spiritual urban community The Monastery is coming to the Kaaistudios four times. You are invited to discover the monastic life, for one ritual or for an entire day. But what exactly is the monastic life?

Why is a spiritual community coming to a theatre?

And what role do rituals and spirituality still play in our society, if any?

Time for a profound conversation with monk Elle.

You have had a very varied career, with a background in jazz, philosophy, and performance studies, and as a critic and the founder of the a.pass advanced Master’s and PhD programmes in the arts. How did you become a member of The Monastery?

The Monastery is principally the result of an encounter between two people with the same unusual desire to found a monastery, Stijn Smeets and me. My career as the coordinator of a.pass and as an artistic researcher was originally concerned with different ways of thinking about what the political ‘we’ might mean nowadays. My research – conducted under the title ‘Bureau d’Espoir’ – aimed to explore different ways of creating hope in society, by bringing together very diverse influences without a preconceived plan or guiding ideology.

I was looking for a way to create movement in our social fabric, not so much as the synchronized movement of individuals, but more as a swarm that comes together and constantly reorganizes itself through time. Through this exploration of hope, I discovered a path that diverged from the idea that things can be distinguished between being ‘meaningful’ and ‘valuable’ or not.

My background is in the performance and dance world. What the body is and how it works are important questions in that context. When I started researching spiritual practices that focus on the body, I wanted to know how the technology of the body – how do I breathe, how do I move, how am I physically and energetically linked to the other? – can help to create mental space and movement, in order to generate hope.

Rooted in that idea, I decided simply to accept everything that was presented to me as a spiritual practice for a year. These spiritual practices – and especially Tantra – became increasingly important to me. At the end of my tenure at a.pass, I collaborated with the workspace Bains Connective to organize ‘The Mobile MNSTRY’, a workshop focused on monastic practice in public space, in and around the Abbey of Vorst. This brought the discrepancy between my critical-artistic work at a.pass and my spiritual practice into sharp 18

relief. Incidentally, I met Stijn at The Mobile MNSTRY, and that is where we outlined our first plans for The Monastery.

Wherein do you think the discrepancies between the artistic-intellectual and the spiritual lie?

I started my career as a critic. My work centred around having a critical perspective on contemporary experimental art and artistic research. Making distinctions, highlighting differences, the discourse on power, queerness, gender, who speaks in which way from which position… After ten years at a.pass, that critical approach became more of a restriction than an inspiration.

Since the beginning of the 20th century, art has been in a kind of constant feedback loop, an echo of critique on critique, of self-reflection and undermining. In this critical age, things like beauty, harmony, and originality are far from self-evident. Something always has to counteract them. Although I also chose a spiritual path centred on confrontation, I had the impression that artists were not the only people hindered by the dictatorship of criticism, and that I could no longer grow as a person.

Take the music that we make at The Monastery, for example. It does not comply with certain artistic values and I would never listen to it myself. But it works in the rituals in which we create community together, to make connections and to move into another state of being.

Have you made a radical break with the art world or are there elements that have found their way into your spiritual practice?

I wanted to think of it as a radical break, but I often hear that there are quite a few similarities between The Monastery and a.pass. We both have horizontal organizational structures, trans-spiritualties, queerness of practice, the absence of a leading figure… (laughs) I am still conducting my research into what constitutes a community or a ‘we’. How do you create a community in which possibilities can flourish? It is actually about aesthetics: how do you organize your time and space, and what kind of ethic produces that aesthetic?

Just like the a.pass researchers follow their path, the monks at The Monastery operate based on their own convictions. This differentiates us from a regular monastery. There is no doctrinal truth and content-wise, everything is open: your beliefs can be whatever you want them to be. We share a practice of spiritual routine: of sitting, singing, dancing, and discussing. You notice that a community quickly falls apart when you start debating truths and untruths. I think any spiritual explanation of what ‘it’ is, is problematic. I think it’s fine to skirt around them and set goalposts, but you have to be able to move the goalposts. They are aids, not truths.

You just mentioned that The Monastery is trans-spiritual, but what inspired that?

Are there any specific movements or schools that influence you?

We started from our experiences of monastic places. Stijn comes out of a Christian monastic tradition, but clashed with certain church doctrines. My experience was mostly of the Buddhist monastery of the Vietnamese monk Thích Nhat Hanh in Bordeaux a mindfulness practice centre. But I had great difficulty with the negation of the body and sexuality. That is how I discovered the tantric path, in which the body is integrated into spirituality. Our practices are a combination of these traditions, but there are also other influences like shamanism or Sufism. Each new resident or monk can also propose new practices.

What is an average day like at The Monastery, and how many monks do you have?

Our day always starts at 6 AM and ends after the evening ceremony around 10 PM, after which everyone is silent until after breakfast the next day. Stijn and I are the only two 19

full-time monks who have taken vows. We currently have three long-term residents who have not taken vows but who do want to live in a spiritual context. We sometimes also have residents who want to come for a short period. Many of them are going through difficult periods in their lives, such as a burn-out or divorce. Their primary focus is on healing.

The monks are absolutely not allowed to miss the morning and evening rituals. In the morning we do body practice, a tea ceremony, sitting meditation, and karma yoga. The evening rituals consist of reading primary sources, reflecting on the day, etc. The long-term residents join us for these rituals.

We also have study and work periods. As a monk, you spend this time in a way that corresponds as much as possible to your monastic practice. Study time means that you train yourself in your specific practice or read texts related to your spirituality. It can be very broad. Work periods are devoted to work for the community. Stijn works with cognitively gifted children and young people at the university in Leuven, which is his service to the community. It isn’t always easy because you have to negotiate the logic of a very different kind of institution. I chose to work exclusively within The Monastery, such as in my Tantra practice and workshops. When I am outside, I work in name of The Monastery.

You have appeared at the Kaaistudios twice before this season, for the seasonal switches, and you are coming back for two more sessions. Why did you accept the Kaaitheater’s invitation?

We talked for a long time about whether returning to an artistic institution would make sense for us. I found it confusing to be confronted with the critical gaze again, which I have let go. Stijn thought of it primarily as a way to give The Monastery more oxygen.

And to reach people who might otherwise never consider entering a monastery. I am ultimately very happy with our decision. We worked very hard on the rituals, with new music, texts, and forms. We would otherwise never be able to make so much time to work for The Monastery creatively.

It has also led to interesting situations. For example, Robin is a mindfulness practitioner, with scientific and cognitive interests. I am a Tantra practitioner. How you practice, speak to people, work with imagination, or where you situate your work sometimes makes a world of difference to us. On the surface, we agree on most things, but once you zoom in on the technology of the body, you notice that different practices do actually correspond to different worldviews and anthropologies. That is precisely the challenge that we seek to explore: to what extent can spiritual practice offer a solution to the dualist thinking of good and bad, right and wrong, valuable and worthless. And at what point do judgements sneak in by the backdoor anyway?...

On 9 and 10 March, The Monastery is coming back to the Kaaistudios as part of WoWmen! What can we expect this time?

We are making a combination of the celebration of spring and the queerness of practice. Tantric practices often focus on the polarity of male and female energy, but there is relatively little interest in gender politics or queerness. Interestingly enough, ancient tantric texts never mention the differences between men and women, but focus on energies and ontological powers. Some conservative ideas have thus found their way into Tantra, which I address critically. I also treat this topic outside the WoWmen! session: in our homebase at The Monastery I give series of workshops on female archetypes for men, women, and those who have left such distinctions far behind. In classic tantric practices, this is not easy because you need an equal number of men and women to work as couples. We are happy to break through this gender stereotyping, but it can sometimes be difficult for the participants.

In december was dat aan Brussel Helpt!, in september, maart en juni aan Cinemaximiliaan. Kaaitheater et The Monastery reversent les recettes de leurs passages aux Kaaistudio’s. Celles de décembre ont été reversées à Brussel Helpt!, celles de septembre, de mars et de juin seront données à Cinemaximiliaan. Ce cinéma pop-up pour primo-arrivants qui a vu le jour au parc Maximilien projette désormais des films à travers toute la Belgique, dans des centres d’accueil pour demandeurs d’asile, dans des cinémas et chez des gens à la maison.

Kaaitheater and The Monastery are giving away the proceeds from their appearances at the Kaaistudios. In December, the proceeds went to Brussels Helps!, and in September, March, and June, they are supporting Cinemaximiliaan. This pop-up cinema for and by newcomers was launched at the Maximiliaan Park and now screens films across Belgium at asylum centres, in cinemas, and at people’s homes.

HALF INDELIBLE IMAGE, HALF HAZY DREAM FRENCH DANCE HISTORIAN LAURENCE LOUPPE ON ACHTERLAND, AFTER SEEING THE FILMED VERSION IN 1990.

I have seen this piece twice, one time being in Montreal (I think). I vividly remember one specific, symbolic moment: a quintet of girls in the spotlights at the front of the stage. In discovering the film, I was not only able to see the piece again, but also revive my memory of it. After all, one of the characteristics of an Anne Teresa work is that they remain in the memory for a long time; half indelible image, half hazy dream. When I looked at the videotape there seemed to me to be two cuts in conversation with each other: my reconstructed memories and the actual film (remarkable).

Let’s talk about the film. In her work, Anne Teresa combines various styles of writing, sets them against each other them and gives them a voice: choreographic writing, musical writing, and cinematographic writing. The film carries her stamp. It doubles the choreography, intensifies it even (the dance and its doppelganger). It was recorded in black and white, which enables a stronger appreciation of relief and light – of the texture of the skin in the light. In short, of the entire substance of the dance materiel – its very grain.

The stage is deep. At the front, two rows of lit squares on the floor lengthen the space. Shared space, heterogeneous and complex: light-shadow, far-near. Same thing with the musicians: the violinist in the foreground, the piano all the way at the back. The violinist’s physical presence is very tangible. The pianist is translucent. A musical dialogue: Eugène Isaÿe’s finesse and Ligeti’s structures. In fact the piece starts with JSB. A dancer enters the stage: irruption-interruption. The first small conflict: musician versus dancer. Subtle connections are revealed through close-ups: signals, relations, and mutual expectations that you would not always notice during the actual performance.

Here are the men. They cross the space, try to hold on to the floor. They can’t find support. Next comes the women’s scene. They have the keys to the space. The space becomes rhythm. Here the Rosas company’s strong link with theatre becomes apparent. Not in the narrative, no words need to be said.

Building up what Edward Bond called ‘accidental time’ requires rhythmic work and very strong accents.

The space and floor as percussion. Pedestals for the female dancer-statues, female dancer-instruments: they tick, scratch, make music with hands and feet. And then, that recurring motif throughout the piece – the loud fall – momentum brusquely arrested. The floor as the orchestra to bodies leaning away from their axis. Hectic madness, moments without tone, sudden blankness. Then, Anne Teresa’s writing is at its most articulate, in the moments between the passages that are loaded with tempestuous energy and the almost stationary, breathless intervals. The composition’s general rhythm — contrasts in the intensity of detail and tempi.

The rhythm is also tension; pauses between the tension. Men-women. Two communities. They do not really confront each other. The conflict that theatre is based on remains latent, suspended. This is perhaps precisely the work of dance vis à vis theatre: to wipe out the too obvious, ostentatious contours of tragedy; to express emotional metaphor through bodies. Keeping tension as pure drama. There are signs on the body too – heels for the girls. I have read somewhere that a ‘De Keersmaeker dance’ is a leg dance. That is true. There are many legs in Achterland; lots of legwork. They even used them for walking (a few times). The heels excite, are worshipped as fetishes. The balance is disturbed. A boy tries to do the same: he also wears shoes, large, ugly, unlaced shoes; small smiles play on his feminine lips. You can see he’s not succeeding because the others’ faces speak: smile, communicate, and express emotion. It is the intimate condensement of presence that exceeds the acting. This piece breathes the feminine as a way of driving the world, as a way of transforming the earth. The whole ground in a heartbeat.

Voor het eerst schreef de choreografe specifiek dansmateriaal voor mannen én kregen muzikanten een centrale plaats op scène. Op de klanken van Györgi Ligeti en Eugène Ysaÿe maakten het minimalisme en de vrouwelijkheid van het vroege werk plaats voor een ambigu niemandsland waarin grenzen en tekens vervagen. Een herneming om naar uit te kijken!

Achterland (1990) est un spectacle charnière dans l’œuvre d’Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker.

Pour la première fois, elle a conçu une chorégraphie spécifique pour des hommes et octroyé une place centrale aux musiciens sur scène. Aux sons de Györgi Ligeti et d’Eugène Ysaÿe, le minimalisme et la féminité des œuvres des débuts de ces artistes font place à un no man’s land ambigu dans lequel les limites et les symboles ne cessent de s’estomper. Une reprise très attendue !

Achterland (1990) is a pivotal production in Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker’s oeuvre. It was the first time that the choreographer created dance material specifically for men and that she gave musicians a central role on the stage. To the tones of Györgi Ligeti and Eugène Ysaÿe, the minimalism and femininity of her earlier work made room for an ambiguous no man’s land that blurred boundaries and signs. A reprisal to look forward to!

ANNELEEN KEPPENS[BE] THE MOON IS THE MOON IS THE MOON Anneleen Keppens – nieuwkomer in het Kaaitheaterprogramma – ontmantelt de structuur van een danstrio en legt de bouwstenen bloot. Net zoals in de schetsen die voorafgaan aan een schilderij, vertrekt de voorstelling vanuit verschillende perspectieven en houdingen. De afzonderlijke lagen die je in de choreografie ontdekt, nodigen uit tot een nieuwe manier van kijken.
