In hun choreografie op John Coltranes A Love Supreme verweven Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker en Salva Sanchis improvisatie en compositie tot ze in elkaar opgaan. Een nieuwe cast van jonge dansers geeft zich over aan Coltranes spirituele ode aan de goddelijke liefde.

Dans leur chorégraphie sur A Love Supreme de John Coltrane, Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker et Salva Sanchis marient improvisations et compositions jusqu’à ce que celles-ci se fondent.

Une nouvelle distribution, de jeunes danseurs s’abandonnent à l’hymne à l’amour divin de Coltrane.

In their choreography set to John Coltrane’s A Love Supreme, Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker and Salva Sanchis intertwine improvisation and composition until they merge with one another completely. A new cast of young dancers submits to Coltrane’s spiritual tribute to divine love.

The result acts as a journey through time, towards what in the 1970s was still the music of the future, and which quite possibly still sounds like that now.

In de herwerkte versie van zijn bestsellerboek Welvaart zonder groei schetst econoom Tim Jackson de krijtlijnen van de post-growth economie. Hij gaat nu in dialoog met politica en activiste Barbara Unmüßig. Zij roept op tot een radicale sociaal-en-ecologische transformatie, om sociale gelijkheid en ecologische rechtvaardigheid boven economische belangen te plaatsen.

Marc Vanrunxt crée un spectacle de danse autour de l’œuvre du solitaire Lucien Goethals, un pionnier de la musique électronique flamande. Le résultat agit comme un voyage à travers le temps, vers ce qui dans les années 70 était encore la musique du futur – et qui a peut-être toujours cette résonance à ce jour.

In the revised edition of his bestselling book Prosperity Without Growth, economist Tim Jackson sketches the outlines of the post-growth economy. He is now coming to dialogue with politician and activist Barbara Unmüßig. She calls for a radical social and ecological transformation to prioritize social equality and ecological justice over economic interests.

Hoe zou de hel er vandaag uitzien? De 500e sterfdag van Jheronimus Bosch zette Vasco Mendonça, Kris Verdonck en Dimitri Verhulst aan het denken. Ze kwamen al snel uit bij de stranden van Lampedusa: een plaats waar toeristen zonnebaden terwijl vluchtelingen aanspoelen. Het valse paradijs van de resorts en de Boschiaanse hel op aarde vloeien in deze productie naadloos in elkaar over.

À quoi ressemblerait l’enfer aujourd’hui ?

C’est la question que se sont posé Vasco Mendonça, Kris Verdonck et Dimitri Verhulst à l’occasion du 500e anniversaire de la mort de Jérôme Bosch. Ils ont rapidement pensé aux plages de Lampedusa : un endroit où les touristes se prélassent au soleil tandis que des réfugiés s’échouent sur la plage. Dans ce spectacle, le faux paradis des complexes touristiques et l’enfer terrestre de Bosch se marient à la perfection.

Caspar Western Friedrich combineert de verhalende kracht van de western met het dromerige verlangen van de Romantiek. Met als inspiratie de lonesome cowboy en de schilderijen en persoonlijkheid van Caspar David Friedrich – één van de belangrijkste landschapsschilders uit de Duitse romantiek – bouwt Philippe Quesne een atelier op scène.

Het stuk kwam tot stand in de Münchner Kammerspiele, met onder meer Europese cowboy van het theater Johan Leysen.

Caspar Western Friedrich combine la force narratrice du western et le désir onirique du romantisme. Avec pour inspiration d’une part, le cow-boy solitaire et d’autre part, les tableaux et la personnalité de Caspar David Friedrich – l’un des plus grands paysagistes du romantisme allemand – Philippe Quesne construit sur scène un atelier de paysages.

Il a créé la pièce au Münchner Kammerspiele, avec, entre autres, cow-boy européen du théâtre Johan Leysen.

Caspar Western Friedrich combines the narrative force of the Western with the dreamy longings of Romanticism. Drawing his inspiration from the lonesome cowboy and from the paintings and personality of Caspar David Friedrich – one of the most important landscape painters of German Romanticism – Philippe Quesne builds a studio of landscapes on stage. The piece was created at the Münchner Kammerspiele with, amongst others, the European cowboy of the theatre Johan Leysen.

EEN FRANSE COWBOY IN MÜNCHEN IN GESPREK MET PHILIPPE QUESNE Mannen met cowboyhoeden, geruite hemden en cowboyboots aanschouwen een wolkenzee tussen bergtoppen. In Caspar Western Friedrich combineren Philippe Quesne en Münchner Kammerspiele de eindeloze landschappen van de romantische schilder Caspar David Friedrich met de woeste natuur van westerns. Dat resulteert in een ruimte die het midden houdt tussen museum, atelier en theaterdecor.

Caspar Western Friedrich zet de romantische schilder Caspar David Friedrich en de eenzame cowboy uit de westerns samen op de planken. Waarom breng je deze twee personages samen?

Het thema van een western is voor mij altijd de zoektocht van een cowboy die door een landschap trekt. Ik zie daarin een analogie met de romantische schilderijen van Caspar David Friedrich, die vaak een in gedachten verzonken persoon confronteert met perspectivische landschappen die aan reizen en verre horizonten doen denken. De titel is een woordspel.

Het westerngenre en de romantiek bieden me de mogelijkheid om het via een landschap te hebben over de huidige zoektocht naar een ideaal. Ook al is verovering – geweld, oorlog, moord – typisch voor een western. Per slot van rekening speelt bij Friedrich ook de context van de Napoleontische oorlogen een rol en is zijn werk een geestelijke zoektocht van een schilder die over de mens en de natuur wil vertellen – en niet alleen over oorlog.

Theater in het algemeen, en mijn werk zeker, werpt veel vragen op over de perceptie van de scène als atelier. Ik koos niet voor Friedrich om zijn biografie op te voeren, maar eerder om zijn werk te gebruiken als inspiratie voor een poëtisch gebaar. Een gebaar waarvoor we zijn atelier zo goed als letterlijk ensceneren. Er zijn talrijke referenties aan dat atelier – dat een heel eenvoudige houten constructie was – waar hij met gesloten gordijnen schilderde. Hij had een heel eigenaardige relatie met de werkelijkheid. Hij schilderde maar heel zelden in de openlucht, zijn landschappen zijn dus eigenlijk gefantaseerde reconstructies. In een aantal schilderijen construeert hij een poëtische natuur met collages van bossen en bergen die totaal niet stroken met de werkelijkheid.

Friedrich schilderde perfecte natuurtaferelen. Voor hem was de natuur eerder een zelfbedachte collage dan een realiteit. Ook vandaag wordt de natuur meer en meer gezien als een constructie of een illusie. Is het daarom dat je de natuur door de mens laat ensceneren in de vorm van een schilderij dat in een museum hangt?

Toen ik aan dit stuk begon, was dat het basisidee. Maar ook in La Mélancolie des dragons (2008) of Swamp Club (2013), stond de reconstructie van de natuur op de scène centraal. Ik heb al vaak gedacht dat theaterscenografie een kwestie van schilderkunst is. Hoe kan je op de scène een artificiële natuur neerzetten en een droombeeld creëren voor de toeschouwer? Ik identificeer mij heel sterk met de composities van Friedrich. Zijn geconstrueerde natuur en enscenering van lichamen in de ruimte zijn romantische aspecten die ook in mijn werk terug te vinden zijn: mensen die door kunstsneeuw stappen, acteurs die in de Swamp Club wonen.

De tijd nemen om zowel lichamen en stemmen op de scène te observeren als materialen, objecten, kleuren, rook en licht. Al meer dan tien jaar probeer ik ‘microwerelden’ te construeren. In Caspar Western Friedrich is die wereld vrij letterlijk, want je ziet cowboys een museum optrekken en een museumzaal inrichten rond deze schilder en de romantiek.

Voor deze microwereld gebruik ik geen echte materialen. Een reconstructie van de realiteit heeft altijd een in elkaar geknutseld aspect. We laten een rots zien, maar ook het 9

piepschuim dat de rots reproduceert. Ik houd van dat soort poëzie. Anders zou ik het publiek gewoon meenemen op een wandeling door de natuur, de echte. Het theater is een transpositie van de reële wereld, geen imitatie ervan.

Waar komt ons verlangen vandaan om altijd maar het beeld van de natuur te reproduceren?

Wat projecteren we van onszelf in dat beeld? En wat gebeurt er als we dat beeld op de scène zien?

Ik hou ervan om op het podium werelden te reconstrueren, maar ik kan moeilijk verwoorden waarom ik dat doe. Ik hoop gewoon dat de toeschouwer terwijl hij naar het stuk kijkt, een gevoel van vrijheid krijgt en dat het hem zin geeft om te schilderen of te lezen. Het is bijna als actie voeren voor meer kunst in het leven. Schilderen, lezen, schrijven, naar muziek luisteren, daar gaat het in al mijn fabels om. Tragedies op de scène interesseren me niet. Momenteel is mijn wereld eerder de postromantiek! In ieder geval fascineert de band tussen mens en natuur me al heel lang. Misschien omdat je als theatermaker constant in een black box leeft, ver van frisse lucht en boswandelingen?

Je brengt verschillende werelden samen op een theaterpodium: de museale wereld met schilderijen en acteurs die niet alleen spelen maar ook decors monteren en demonteren.

Het zal geen toeval zijn dat je dit stuk presenteert tijdens Performatik, een festival op het kruispunt tussen podiumkunst en beeldende kunsten?

De voorstelling is een reactie op de trend van de laatste jaren om dans of lichamen in beweging te programmeren in musea. Je zou bijna zeggen dat er een soort vrees bestaat om alleen maar schilderijen of sculpturen te tonen, angst voor dingen die niet live zijn. In het Louvre, bijvoorbeeld, zie je steeds vaker klassieke concerten tussen de werken in, in plaats van 10

gewoon schilderijen te exposeren. Die ‘animatie’ is vooral een initiatief van de musea, niet van kunstenaars. Het klopt dat ik in de voorstelling die kwestie met een zekere ironie benader, en dat je de cowboys ook kunt zien als perfecte museumgidsen of animators.

Anderzijds: Caspar Friedrich schreef een prachtige tekst waarin hij ronduit toegeeft dat hij de voorkeur geeft aan een ruimtelijke presentatie van meerdere schilderijen – in plaats van één enkel. Hij suggereert zelfs om zijn werk te combineren met licht en muziek. Een erg avant-gardistisch voorstel dus, met een scenografie, een enscenering. Friedrich was bevriend met musici en schrijvers die eveneens tot de romantiek behoorden. In die tijd was er veel kruisbestuiving tussen de kunsten, dat is niet nieuw. Ik vind dat het debat over de zogenaamde tegenstellingen tussen theater, musea, dans en tekst een valse moderne discussie is. Volgens mij is er momenteel een sterke tendens om visuele kunsten in de podiumkunsten te introduceren.

Omgekeerd is het vandaag misschien wel heel modern om één enkel schilderij te tonen in een groot museum?

Waarom is het westerngenre volgens jou zo geschikt om die spanning te tonen tussen de tijdsbeleving van een voorstelling, en de museale tijd van het kijken naar een kunstwerk?

In westerns is er altijd een moment van nietsdoen. De personages rusten en vallen in slaap in de woestijn, bij een rots of een paard. In die tijd ging het tegelijk om het bouwen van steden, Amerika ontdekken en goud zoeken. Maar er was ook altijd een afwachtende houding, bijna zoals in Beckett: de cowboy Beckett die niet goed weet waarom hij moet veroveren en hoe hij een plek op aarde moet vinden. Personages in zo’n gemoedstoestand hebben inspiratie geleverd voor tal van songs die het hebben over de problemen van het bestaan. Waar ik in westerns van houd, is het verhaal van de bewegingloze reis: de cowboy die zittend op een stoel met zijn gitaar over grote avonturen in de woestijn zingt. Voor mij is het werk van Friedrich de ultieme bewegingloze reis. In theater is de reis net zo goed bewegingloos.

Het zoeken naar een nieuwe wereld – zo typisch voor westerns – vind je vandaag terug in kunst en poëzie. Om alternatieve, utopische oplossingen te vinden voor onze planeet moeten we misschien wat meer poëzie lezen of naar kunst kijken. Met verschillende stijlen in verschillende periodes, tonen schilders ons mogelijke wegen. Ik vind het erg belangrijk dat Caspar David Friedrich de mens toont als iets dat deel uitmaakt van de natuur – in plaats van er superieur aan te zijn. De mens maakt deel uit van het landschap. Hij domineert het niet.

Voor deze voorstelling werkte je niet met je gebruikelijk gezelschap, maar met de Münchner Kammerspiele. Hoe is die samenwerking tot stand gekomen? En hoe verliep het creatieproces?

Het was eigenlijk een opdracht voor het repertoiretheater, in Duitsland. Naast acteurs van de Münchner Kammerspiele speelt ook Johan Leysen mee, een freelance acteur en een Europese cowboy van het theater. Mijn werkwijze was in elk geval dezelfde als altijd: ik maakte het stuk samen met de acteurs – zij hebben me geïnspireerd. We lazen veel teksten, keken naar beelden van westerns en naar Friedrichs schilderijen in het museum. Maar ik voelde me toch een beetje als een Franse cowboy in München. Het Duitse theater is erg hiërarchisch georganiseerd. De decorbouw is daar heel gestructureerd. Er zijn technici op alle niveaus en tientallen decorbouwers. Dat was voor mij redelijk exotisch. Normaal werk ik met een kleine ploeg van trouwe medewerkers en we maken alles zelf. Veel teksten en gedichten werden me aangereikt door de acteurs zelf. Zo is Peter Brombracher, de oudste van de acteurs, een erg romantisch persoon. Hij heeft in zijn carrière al de hele Duitse theatergeschiedenis doorkruist. Net als Johan Leysen heeft hij een nauwe relatie met de tekst. Die acteurs zijn vol van teksten. Ze dragen hun eigen museum met zich mee!

UN COW-BOY FRANÇAIS À MUNICH UNE CONVERSATION AVEC PHILIPPE QUESNE Des hommes aux chapeaux de cow-boy, aux chemises à carreaux et aux santiags contemplent une mer de nuages entre les sommets des montagnes. Dans Caspar Western Friedrich, Philippe Quesne et le Münchner Kammerspiele réunissent les paysages infinis du peintre romantique Caspar David Friedrich et la nature sauvage des Westerns.

Cela donne lieu à espace entre musée, atelier et scène de théâtre. « La scénographie théâtrale m’a souvent semblé une question de peinture. »

Caspar Western Friedrich porte à la scène le peintre romantique Caspar David Friedrich et le cow-boy solitaire du Western. Pourquoi réunir ces deux personnages ?

Pour moi, la thématique d’un Western est toujours la quête d’un cow-boy qui voyage dans un paysage. Et j’y vois une analogie avec ce que je perçois dans la peinture romantique, et plus précisément dans celle de Caspar Friedrich, qui place souvent l’observateur face au champ des possibles de la perspective, du voyage et de l’horizon. Le titre part d’un jeu de langage. Le genre du Western et le romantisme me permettent de parler de la quête d’un idéal actuel, à travers un paysage. Même si le Western se caractérise par la conquête – la bataille, la guerre et le meurtre. Finalement, chez Friedrich il y a aussi le contexte des guerres napoléoniennes et la quête spirituelle d’un peintre qui ressent le besoin de parler de l’homme et de la nature, pas seulement des affrontements guerriers.

Le théâtre en général, et mon travail en particulier, soulève toujours beaucoup de questions sur la perception de la scène en tant qu’atelier. J’ai tenté de transformer la référence à Caspar Friedrich, non pas pour retracer sa biographie, mais plutôt pour faire un geste poétique inspiré de ce peintre. Un geste qui met presque en scène son atelier. La scénographie fait de multiples références à son atelier, qui était une pièce en bois, très simple, dans laquelle il peignait avec les rideaux pratiquement fermés. Il entretenait donc un rapport très singulier à la réalité. Ses paysages sont plutôt des reconstitutions de son imaginaire, puisqu’il plantait très peu son chevalet dans la nature. Dans certains de ses tableaux, il réinvente quasi une nature poétique, avec des collages de forêts et de montagnes qui ne répondent pas à la réalité.

Friedrich a peint des scènes de nature parfaite. Pour lui, la nature était plutôt un collage créé qu’une réalité. Aujourd’hui aussi la nature est de plus en plus considérée comme une construction et une illusion. Est-ce pour cela que vous portez la nature à la scène sous forme de tableau dans un musée, conservé par l’être humain ?

Quand j’ai amorcé la mise en scène du spectacle, cette idée était au cœur du travail.

Mais même dans La Mélancolie des dragons (2008) ou Swamp Club (2013), les questions centrales concernaient la place de la nature comme dispositif scénique. La scénographie théâtrale m’a souvent semblé une question de peinture. Comment parler de la nature artificielle sur scène et proposer une rêverie au spectateur ? Je m’identifie beaucoup à la composition de Caspar Friedrich. Sa nature reconstituée et sa mise en scène des corps dans l’espace sont des aspects romantiques qu’on retrouve dans mon travail : des gens qui marchent dans la neige artificielle, des acteurs qui habitent le Swamp Club. Prendre le temps d’observer autant les corps et les voix que les matériaux, les objets, les couleurs, les fumées et les lumières sur scène. Depuis plus de dix ans, je cherche à reconstituer des « micromondes ». Avec Caspar Western Friedrich, ce monde est plus littéral, puisqu’on voit des cow-boys fabriquer un musée et essayer de monter une muséographie autour de ce peintre et du romantisme.

Pour ce micromonde, je n’utilise pas les vrais matériaux. Dans la reconstitution du réel, il y a toujours ce côté bricolé. On montre un rocher, mais aussi le polystyrène qui en fait une reproduction. Cette poétique me plaît. Sinon j’aurais emmené le public se promener dans la nature, la vraie. Le théâtre, c’est une transposition du monde réel, non pas une imitation.

D’où vient notre désir de toujours vouloir reproduire l’image de la nature ? Que projetonsnous de nous-mêmes dans cette image ? Et que se passe-t-il quand nous voyons cette image sur scène ?

Tenter de reconstituer des mondes sur scène m’est très familier, mais j’aurais du mal à dire pourquoi je le fais. J’espère juste que le spectateur éprouve un sentiment de liberté en regardant le spectacle, et que ça lui donne envie de peindre ou de lire. Il s’agit presque de militantisme pour plus d’art dans la vie. Peindre, lire, écrire, écouter de la musique, voilà qui habitent toutes mes fables. Je ne suis juste pas intéressé aux tragédies sur scène. Pour l’instant, mon univers est plutôt post-romantique ! En tout cas, j’aime depuis longtemps le rapport entre l’homme et la nature. Peut-être parce que faire du théâtre, c’est vivre sans cesse dans des « boîtes noires », loin de l’air frais et des promenades dans la forêt ?

Vous réunissez différents mondes : le monde muséal, avec des tableaux sur une scène de théâtre et des acteurs qui, en plus de jouer, montent et démontent les décors. Est-ce pour cela que vous présentez votre spectacle dans le cadre de Performatik, un festival qui s’articule à la croisée des arts de la scène et des arts plastiques ?

Le spectacle est une réaction aux tendances des dernières années : la volonté des musées de programmer de la danse ou des corps en mouvement. On dirait qu’on a peur de ne montrer que de la peinture ou de la sculpture, peur de ce qui est « mort ». Au lieu de juste exposer la peinture au Louvre, par exemple, on y programme des musiciens classiques qui jouent devant 13

les tableaux. Cette « animation » est surtout une initiative des musées, non pas des artistes. Il est donc vrai que j’aborde cette question avec une certaine ironie dans le spectacle et qu’on peut imaginer les cow-boys en parfaits guides muséaux et animateurs.

En même temps, il y a un texte magnifique de Caspar Friedrich qui dit clairement que pour montrer sa peinture, il préfère une organisation spatiale de plusieurs tableaux que d’un seul, et il suggère même de rajouter de la musique et de la lumière. Il s’agit donc d’une proposition très avant-gardiste, avec une scénographie, une mise en scène. Friedrich fréquentait des musiciens et des auteurs appartenant au même courant du romantisme. À cette époque, il y avait aussi des connivences entre les arts, ce n’est pas nouveau. Je pense qu’opposer le théâtre, le musée, la danse, le texte est un débat faussement moderne. L’arrivée des arts visuels sur scène est une question très ouverte de nos jours, me semble-t-il. Peut-être que la modernité actuelle, c’est présenter un tableau, seul dans un grand musée ?

De quelle manière le genre du Western convient-il à cette tension entre le temps performatif et le temps muséal consacré à regarder l’œuvre d’art elle-même ?

Dans le Western, il y a ces moments de désœuvrement : les personnages se posent et s’endorment dans le désert, près d’un rocher ou d’un cheval. À l’époque, il y avait à la fois la quête de construire des cités, de découvrir l’Amérique et de chercher de l’or. Mais il y avait aussi ce climat d’attente, presque comme en Beckett : le cow-boy Beckett qui ne sait pas très bien pourquoi conquérir et comment trouver une place sur la terre. Ces corps, dans ces états ou ces positions ont inspiré de nombreuses chansons qui chantent la difficulté de l’existence. Ce que j’aime dans le Western, c’est l’histoire du voyage immobile : le cow-boy qui chante les grandes aventures dans le désert, assis sur une chaise avec sa guitare. La peinture de Friedrich est pour moi le voyage immobile absolu. Au théâtre, le voyage est aussi immobile.

La quête de Nouveau Monde propre au Western se retrouve aujourd’hui dans l’art et la poésie : pour trouver des solutions alternatives ou utopiques pour la planète, il nous faudrait peut-être écouter plus de poésie et voir plus d’art. Par leurs époques et leurs styles différents, les peintres nous montrent des chemins possibles. Et je trouve très important que Caspar Friedrich situât l’homme dans une relation d’appartenance et non pas de supériorité à la nature.

L’homme fait partie du paysage, il ne le domine pas.

Pour ce spectacle, vous n’avez pas travaillé avec votre compagnie habituelle, mais avec la Münchner Kammerspiele. Comment cette collaboration a-t-elle vu le jour et ressentiez-vous l’envie de travailler avec un autre groupe ?

Je pense qu’il faut dire qu’il s’agit d’une commande pour le répertoire, en Allemagne.

Outre des comédiens de la Münchner Kammerspiele, il y a aussi Johan Leysen, un acteur flamand indépendant et un cow-boy européen du théâtre qui s’est souvent produit sur la scène du Kaaitheater. J’ai toutefois travaillé avec la même méthodologie : j’ai composé la pièce avec eux et ils m’ont inspiré. On a lu beaucoup de textes, regardé des images et des Westerns et contemplé des tableaux de Friedrich au musée. Mais je me sentais quand même un peu le cow-boy français à Munich. Les codes du métier sont très hiérarchisés dans le théâtre allemand.

La question de la reconstitution du réel est prégnante. Il y a des domaines techniques à tous les niveaux de la maison et des dizaines de constructeurs. C’était très exotique pour moi.

Normalement, je travaille avec une équipe très fidèle et on fabrique tout nous-mêmes.

Beaucoup de textes et de poèmes me sont venus des acteurs qui ont fait des propositions.

Peter Brombracher, par exemple, le plus âgé des comédiens, est quelqu’un de très romantique.

Il a traversé l’histoire du théâtre allemand. Comme Johan Leysen, il entretient un rapport très fort au texte. Ces acteurs sont remplis de textes. Ils sont porteurs de leur propre musée !

A FRENCH COWBOY IN MUNICH IN CONVERSATION WITH PHILIPPE QUESNE Men in cowboy hats, plaid shirts, and cowboy boots behold a mountainous skyline against a sea of clouds. In Caspar Western Friedrich, Philippe Quesne and Münchner Kammerspiele combine the boundless landscapes of the Romantic painter Caspar David Friedrich with the rugged nature of the western genre.

The result is a space that blends museum, studio, and theatre set.

‘I have often thought that theatre staging is a question of painting.’

Caspar Western Friedrich brings together the Romantic painter Caspar David Friedrich and the lone cowboys of the western genre onstage. Why have you combined these two figures?

To me, the theme of the western genre has always been the cowboy’s quest as he travels across the landscape. I see an analogy between this and the Romantic paintings of Caspar David Friedrich, who often places pensive figures in perspectival landscapes that are reminiscent of travel and distant horizons. The title is a play on words. The western genre and Romanticism offer me the opportunity to use landscapes to address the current search for an ideal. Although conquest – violence, war, murder – is typical of westerns, the context of the Napoleonic Wars also plays a role in Friedrich’s work, which also represents the spiritual quest of a painter talking about humanity and nature – and not only about war.

Theatre in general, and my work in particular, raises many questions about the perception of the stage as a studio. I didn’t choose Friedrich to act out his life story, but rather to use his work as the inspiration to create a poetic gesture. And this gesture required us to recreate his studio almost identically on stage. There are numerous references to the studio – which was a simple wooden structure – where he painted behind closed curtains. He had a very particular relationship with reality. He rarely painted in the open air, so his landscapes are actually imagined reconstructions. In some of his paintings, he constructed a poetic natural landscape from collages of forests and mountains that did not correspond to reality whatsoever.

Friedrich painted perfect natural tableaux. Nature was more of a self-devised collage than a reality. Nowadays, nature is increasingly being perceived as a construction or an illusion.

Is that why your characters depict nature in the form of a painting hanging in a museum?

When I started working on this piece, that was the basic idea. But the reconstruction of nature onstage was also a central theme in La Mélancolie des dragons (2008) and Swamp Club (2013). I have often thought that theatre staging is a question of painting. How do you present artificial nature onstage and create a dream vision for the audience? I identify very strongly with Friedrich’s compositions. His constructed nature and staging of bodies in the space are Romantic aspects that recur in my work too: people walking through fake snow, actors who live in the Swamp Club. I take the time to observe both bodies and voices on the stage as materials, objects, colours, smoke and light. For more than ten years, I have been trying to construct ‘micro-worlds’. In Caspar Western Friedrich, that world is quite literal because you see cowboys build a museum and install a museum room focused on this painter and Romanticism.

I do not use real materials for this micro-world. A reconstruction of reality always has an aspect of being cobbled together. We show a rock, for example, but also the polystyrene foam from which the rock is made. I love that kind of poetry. Otherwise I would just take he audience on a hike in nature, real nature. The theatre is a transposition of the real world, not an imitation of it.

What is the origin of our desire to keep reproducing images of nature? What do we project of ourselves into that image? And what happens when we see that image onstage?

I enjoy reconstructing worlds on the stage, but I find it difficult to articulate why I do that. I just hope that watching the piece makes the audience feel free and want to go and paint or read. It is almost like campaigning for more art in life. Painting, reading, writing, listening to music… that is what all my fables are about. I am not interested in staging tragedies. At the moment my world is more like post-Romanticism! In any case, humanity’s relationship with nature has fascinated me for a very long time. Might that be because as a theatre director, you constantly live in a black box, a long way from fresh air and walks in the woods?

You bring disparate worlds together on the theatre stage: the world of museums with paintings and actors who do not only perform but also build and dismantle sets. It is presumably not a coincidence that you are presenting this piece during Performatik, a festival at the intersection between the performing and visual arts?

The production is a reaction to the recent trend of programming dance or moving bodies in museums. You would almost think that there is a kind of fear of simply showing paintings or sculptures; a fear of things that are not live. At the Louvre, for example, you can increasingly see classical concerts being performed amongst the works, instead of just exhibiting paintings.

This ‘entertainment’ is primarily the initiative of the museums themselves, not of the artists. It is true that in this production, I approach this issue with a certain irony, and the cowboys could be interpreted as the perfect museum guides or entertainers.

On the other hand, Caspar Friedrich wrote a beautiful text in which he plainly admits to preferring a spatial presentation of multiple paintings, rather than a single painting. He even suggests that his work should be combined with light and music. So that is a very avant-garde proposal, with scenography and staging. Friedrich was friends with musicians and authors who 18

were also part of the Romantic movement. There was a lot of cross-fertilization between the arts. That is not new. I think the debate about so-called oppositions between theatre, museums, dance and text is a false modern dichotomy. There is currently a strong tendency to introduce the visual arts into the performing arts. Conversely, perhaps it is now very modern to display one painting in a big museum?

Why do you think the western genre is so apt to show that tension between the experience of time in a production and the museum time of looking at an artwork?

In westerns, there is always a moment of stillness. The characters rest and fall asleep in the desert, near a rock or a horse. In those days, the focus was on building cities, discovering America and looking for gold. But there was also always a hesitant attitude, almost like in Beckett: the cowboy Beckett who is not really sure why he is supposed to conquer anything and how to find his place in the world. Characters in that state of mind provided the inspiration for numerous songs about existential problems. What I like about westerns is that motionless journey: the cowboy sitting in a chair with his guitar, singing about great adventures in the desert. To me, Friedrich’s work is the ultimate motionless journey. In theatre, the journey is just as motionless.

Looking for new worlds, which is so typical of westerns, is also a common theme in art and poetry nowadays. Perhaps we should read more poetry or look at more art to find alternative, utopian solutions for our planet. Painters show us possible ways of doing that in different styles and in different periods. I think it is extremely important that Caspar David Friedrich shows humanity as something that is part of nature instead of being superior to it. People are simply part of the landscape; they do not dominate it.

You did not collaborate with your usual company for this production, but rather with the Münchner Kammerspiele. How did you establish this cooperation? And what was the creative process like?

It was actually commissioned by the repertoire theatre in Germany. In addition to actors from the Münchner Kammerspiele, Johan Leysen is also in the production. He is a freelance actor and a European cowboy of the theatre. My method was the same as always: I created the piece with the actors and they inspired me. We read a lot of texts together and looked at footage from westerns and Friedrich’s paintings in museums. But I still felt a little like a French cowboy in Munich. German theatre is organized very hierarchically. Set building is very structured there. There are technicians at every level and dozens of set builders. That was all rather exotic to me. I usually work with a small group of trusted collaborators and we make everything ourselves. Many of the texts and poems were suggested to me by the actors.

For example, Peter Brombracher, the oldest of the actors, is a very romantic person. His career has criss-crossed the whole of German theatre history. Just like Johan Leysen, he has a close relationship with the text. The actors are brimming with texts. They carry their own museum with them!

TABLE TOP SHAKESPEARE: NOWHERE TO RUN, NOWHERE TO HIDE TIM ETCHELLS on Forced Entertainment’s Complete Works Shakespeare ghosts the English language so ubiquitously, cropping up just about anywhere you look as either idiom, pun, quotation or paraphrase, that it’s pretty much impossible to avoid the bloke, no matter how deep in the world of devised performances, new texts and interdisciplinary projects you might generally try to hang out. Nowhere to run, nowhere to hide. Plus as a theatre maker – in England at least – you’re almost inevitably dogged by random annual inquiry as to ‘when you’re going to try your hand’ at that particular 16th century fairground attraction.

Coming late in the game, after 30 years pretty much Shakespeare-free (ok, bar the odd textual allusion and a week-long skirmish with King Lear), the new Forced Entertainment project Complete Works feels like we’ve found a good solution to this particular version of the ‘English problem’. Approaching all the Shakespeare plays in a single project, albeit focusing entirely on the narration of the plots, we’re in at the deep end, and somehow pretty much dodging the bullet at the same time.

In the 36 discrete 45-60 minute-long performances that comprise the complete version of the project, Forced Entertainment performers – Robin Arthur, Claire Marshall, Cathy Naden, Terry O’Connor and Richard Lowdon, joined by regular collaborator Jerry Killick – take turns enacting or summarising the stories of the plays using a large collection of everyday objects arranged on a modest tabletop.

Drawing on research I did during an RSC MyShakespeare commission a couple of years back, the schematic narrations of Complete Works are about proximity and overview. The intimacy of the auditorium, seating people close to the table that serves as its stage, finds a close mirror in the camera shot presenting the action to online audiences when we have sometimes livestreamed the work. The banal platform of the table-become-stage is at once the how-to space of so many Internet tutorials and how-to videos and at the same time, a distant cousin to the ‘wooden O’ invoked by Shakespeare in Henry V as the arena for the audience’s collective imagination. Indeed, Shakespeare is full of such references to the alchemical transposition of language to images, explicit invitations that spectators work to conjure action as described from the stage. It’s a device that, in one form or another, has been a part of Forced Entertainment’s performances since a long time, most centrally perhaps in Dirty Work (1998), a stage production in which pretty much everything that ‘happens’ does so through description and a process of linguistic unpacking. For Complete Works – our episodic Shakespearean marathon – this game of decoding language is set in motion hand in hand with a kind of lo-fi puppetry and diagrammatic deadpan, playing the tabletop as stage, making stand-ins for the characters and actors with a set of unlikely domestic objects.

Watching Richard Lowdon in rehearsal for The Tempest, with a flower pot for Caliban and a bottle of soy sauce for Trinculo, summoned for me the idea of some last-minute-kitchen-tablebank-heist planning session gone wrong; the shipwrecked mariners here, Prospero and Miranda there, the getaway car long forgotten. Claire Marshall’s All’s Well That Ends Well meanwhile cast a bottle of Nina Ricci Perfume as the King of France and a large size Discount Pharmacy Nail Polish Remover as Bertram, Claire seated at the elaborately laid out table, resembling a storybook child acting plays with whatever’s to hand, confined to a bathroom, cupboard or attic on some toyless rainy afternoon.

In one sense, the inscrutable objects give nothing, amplifying to absurdity some of Bresson’s maxims about the ideal of blankness when it comes to acting and images in cinema. But the project does somehow manage to get blood from the stones. The unpromising machinery of the tabletop stirs something deep, through which the stories gain a kind of traction; in time you find yourself watching the box of matches for a trace of a protaonist’s guilt, staring at the large bottle of wood glue for signs of a supporting character’s dilemma, or wondering about the fate and motives of an allspice jar. On the one hand, it’s a kind of rudimentary ventriloquism, bringing life and voice to these supposedly dead things, but on another, the work taps the half-life that objects have anyway, their speechless speech, the traces of their action and purpose, their haunted existence. Even these inanimate performers – coming from the kitchen cupboard, the grocery store, the garage, the junk shop and the supermarket – bring something to their roles.

Amongst the most interesting moments in these versions of Shakespeare are those where the plays, on their own terms, stage questions about personhood and agency, fate and free will, life and death. Watching the objects arranged on the table for the end of King Lear, gathered around the body of Cordelia (as played by a small glass vial), Robin Arthur’s glass vase representing Lear looking down to see if his daughter is still breathing; or watching Terry O’Connor’s Richard II pontificate and philosophise endlessly, you’re confronted in a double sense by the lifelessness of Cordelia, by the inertness of the king. It’s the search for a speculative interiority that’s compelling and baffling at the same time – the conundrum that’s at the heart of puppetry, and perhaps, at the heart of acting itself.

‘I ALWAYS TEND TO FIND THE CRACKS AND FISSURES OF HISTORY’ A CONVERSATION WITH TRAJAL HARRELL

What happens when the Japanese butoh pioneer Tatsumi Hijikata meets the early 20th-century French dancer Loïe Fuller? This imaginative encounter lead the American choreograper Trajal Harrell to create his most recent work, CAEN AMOUR. Although he is always traveling, he found time to talk to us about Japan, about imagination and about history. ‘The most important liberation is the liberation of the imagination.’

CAEN AMOUR draws from three sources of inspiration: the French dancer Loïe Fuller, Tatsumi Hijikata, one of the pioneers of Japanese butoh, and the fashion designer Rei Kawakubo of Comme des Garçons. How do they relate to each other in the piece?

I started by imagining a meeting between Tatsumi Hijikata and Loïe Fuller. At that time, I was researching Loïe Fuller. I was already conducting long-term research on Tatsumi Hijikata and I’m continuously working with the work of Rei Kawakubo. In the process of the work, however, I decided to veil this proposition and inspiration. I wanted the work to be more experiential, inspiring the audience to physically move through the piece.

What is so fascinating about Hijikata and butoh?

My grandmother’s grandmother was from Japan, so I’ve always had an affinity with Japan. When I got a fellowship to go there, I was involved with the work of Rei Kawakubo/ Comme des Garçons. My work always begins with a formal examination of the ‘défilé’, but this time I was thinking of changing my relationship with the fashion spectacle. Rei Kawakubo first came to the fashion shows in Paris in 1981 with a totally new way of designing and presening clothes. The way people spoke about this change felt very similar for me to the way people spoke about butoh dance as being post-Hiroshima and a violent break from western ideals. During my stay in Japan, I first wanted to draw a fictional map between butoh and Rei Kawakubo to investigate possible influences between the two. I wanted to play ‘six degrees of separation’, a game based on the idea that everyone on the planet is separated by six people. I was asked to go to the archives of Hijikata, but that research method seemed too conventional. After I was asked repeatedly, however, I realized it would be rude of me not to go. I saw some recordings there of Hijikata’s pieces and I was just floored! I almost couldn’t believe the kind of aesthetic resonance and richness of the work that I discovered. I’d seen a lot of butoh but I’d never seen anything like this. Hijikata’s work didn’t come to the west, except for one excerpt that came to the Louvre, at some point during the 1980s. I understood that this was where I had to stop the mapping project. I’ve been going back to Japan regularly since then, delving into the archives and doing research.

From 2013, I started to develop a set of projects around this material.

How does CAEN AMOUR fit into this research? And to what does the title refer?

In my research, I was looking at how butoh started. Among other things, butoh artists were revolting against the conventions of Kabuki. The early Kabuki began with rural theatre forms. They reminded me of my own relationship to rural theatre and my first encounter with dance as a performance. When I was growing up, in a small town in Georgia, my father would take me to the fair. At a certain point during the night, he would send me off with friends and he would go to something called the hoochie coochie show. It was only when I got older that I began to realize what it meant.

I started researching the hoochie coochie and looking at its potential relationship to butoh in terms of formal practices, both from an imaginary and a realistic point of view.

Butoh was highly influenced by modern dance and I think that this hoochie coochie is related to the beginnings of modern dance as well. In my research, I always tend to find the cracks and fissures of history: things that are clearly a part of (dance) history but that haven’t been fully exposed or investigated.

In bringing together these inspirations, you combine very opposing ways of dealing with the oriental. Do you mean to research it from these different perspectives?

The hoochie coochie shows were a kind of bastardization of orientalism that became watered down and turned into something else. Hijikata was trying to break away from the west. At the same time he re-inserted certain western strategies back into his work. I find this way of breaking away and re-problematizing very exciting.

In CAEN AMOUR, we don’t just erase orientalism either. We try to expose it and see what it produces in the imagination, by recognizing these different historical strands and bringing them together. It’s up to the viewer to interrogate his or her own perspective on that. Instead of erasing orientalism, sexism, or racism, we try to let all of these ‘-isms’ collide in the viewer’s imagination.

By locating both dances in my personal history, I’m first of all problematizing my own relationship to orientalism and to butoh. I’m trying to find the connection for myself, which lies mainly in the imaginative. Creating art is not about a creating a definitive position on these things but proposing new or different perspectives. Of course different kinds of 23

images can get produced, but I don’t focus on that in the making. I try to stick to the aesthetic principles and the formal concerns. It’s about how you create a terrain in which the viewer can produce different imaginative possibilities based on what he or she encounters, rather than the artist pointing it out and showing them what and how they should see.

It takes a lot of trust in the aesthetic proposition and in the work. The most important liberation is the liberation of the imagination. I don’t get caught up in representation. Of course we’re critical and we are constantly challenging ourselves. But I want the work to remain productive for the viewer.

The set is quite specific, with a forefront and a space at the back. How did the hoochie coochie show influence these set?

Usually the hoochie coochie show had a front and a back. The front was the zone of teasing but you could also go to the back to see more, such as more nakedness. In some shows you could even go to a even more hidden area with actual sex work.

I was in a two-year residency at MoMa, where I was investigating the exchange between my practice as a theatre director and my practice in making gallery works. Toward the end of this residency, I wanted to make a piece that could be seen both in theatres and museums. I used one of the key questions of my residency: How to create a sculptural experience in a dance performance? For CAEN AMOUR this sculptural experience was influenced by the hoochie coochie idea of the front and the back. It offered two kinds of experiences: the front is a kind of dance performance experience, while the experience at the back relates more to the visual arts and gallery experience.

CAEN AMOUR is part of the Performatik programme, which deals with art at the intersection of the visual arts and performance. Is the set an installation or a scenography for you? And wherein does the difference lie?

I think the sculptural object is an installation and a scenography as well. By playing on both possibilities, they fuse, creating this other sculptural possibility: a kinetic sculpture, which is a choreography that the audience itself generates. If it was just an installation, I don’t think that the audience choreography would operate in the same way, and the same is true for the scenography. The tension between the two invites you to walk around kinetically in a very different kind of way.

You want to enter history through imagination as opposed to forms as re-enactment, which stay closer to the facts. You try to activate it, to make it mobile and attract new kinds of knowledge from it. Why do you treat history in this way?

When I was in junior high school, there was the annual ‘History Day Competition’.

There was a general theme and different categories: you could write a paper, make a display, create performances and so on. There was a different theme every year. You would take something from history and filter it through this theme. I won the Georgia History Day first place for six years in a row in group performance. It was only towards the middle of the Twenty Looks series that I realized these History Days had been crucial in my education as I had learned to take historical issues and problematize them. You could say that once I had enough grounding in the formal investigations, this historical practice came back to me as a way to enliven the imagination. But it wasn’t conscious. Like many artists, I am stumbling around in the dark. At a certain point you get to briefly turn on the light and see what’s going on, but as soon as you do that, you notice another space of darkness that you had not taken into account. So the most important thing is to be willing to research and go into the unknown. For me anyway.

In his new solo, Thomas Hauert dances to various different versions of Monteverdi’s baroque madrigal Si dolce è’l tormento and to 12 Madrigali by Salvatore Sciarrino. For Hauert, this musical poem about impossible love symbolises the tension between longing for an ideal and understanding the tormenting truth that the ideal will remain out of reach.

Hij zoekt de scheidingslijn op tussen het wiskundige en het organische, tussen de digitale precisie van elektronische muziek en de analoge imprecisie van dans, tussen het dansbare en het hoorbare.

Dans son premier solo de danse, Gabriel Schenker déconstruit et reconstruit la toile musicale de la composition électronique de John McGuire, Pulse Music III. Il analyse la ligne qui sépare le mathématique de l’organique, la précision numérique de la musique électronique de l’imprécision analogique de la danse, l’audible du dansable.
