UNTIL OUR HEARTS STOP was een van de absolute hoogtepunten van het vorige seizoen, en haalde meer dan terecht de selectie van Het Theaterfestival 2016.

In his latest project, Christophe Meierhans sues money in court. Is it directly responsible for all this misery, or is it no more than a neutral instrument that often falls into the wrong hands? As a first step, Meierhans stages the preliminary hearing: prosecution and defence deliver their opening arguments.

Het opslaan en verwerken van de dagelijkse informatie-tsunami is een tijdrovende bezigheid. Vanuit deze vaststelling neemt Michiel Vandevelde de rol van het denken onder de loep. Met een uitbundige choreografie vol gereapproprieerde dans, flarden tekst en bizarre muziek formuleert hij een kritiek op onze tijd, voorzichtig zoekend naar nieuwe denkmogelijkheden.

Inspired by the hymn Say No!, more than 30 choirs and ensembles from across the world have created their own song about conscientious objection and desertion. Kate McIntosh is geboren in Nieuw-Zeeland maar woont in Brussel, en dat heeft haar werk sterk beïnvloed. Aangetrokken tot het onbekende, daagt ze zichzelf in elke voorstelling uit.

De toeschouwers en hoe die zich verhouden tot de voorstellingsruimte, spelen een centrale rol in haar producties. ‘Als ik zelf in de zaal zit, ben ik vaak nieuwsgieriger naar de mensen die rondom me zitten, dan naar wat er effectief op het podium gebeurt.’

Laten we bij het begin beginnen. Je bent van start gegaan als danser, maar je werk raakt vandaag heel uiteenlopende disciplines aan. Hoe ben je tot dit punt gekomen?

Tot mijn dertigste heb ik als danser getraind en gewerkt. In 2004 maakte ik mijn eerste eigen productie en stopte tegelijk ook quasi volledig met mijn danstrainingen. Ik was toen al enkele jaren in Brussel en raakte gefascineerd door de kruisbestuivingen tussen allerhande disciplines die ik hier aantrof. In andere landen waren de grenzen tussen de verschillende genres nog altijd erg strikt. Het feit dat een danser interessante gesprekken kon hebben met een schilder of schrijver en daarbij ook met hen kon samenwerken, was voor mij een ware openbaring. Het prikkelde me om andere kunstvormen te onderzoeken, zowel als maker als in samenwerking met anderen.

Sindsdien is dingen doen waarvan ik niet goed weet hoe ik ze moet doen en waarmee ik heel weinig ervaring heb, een blijvend gegeven in mijn werk. Elke nieuwe productie is iets wat ik nooit eerder heb geprobeerd en daarom ook een zoektocht.

In mijn werk zie je duidelijk mijn affiniteiten met het lichaam: menselijke lichamen, dierlijke lichamen, en de grenzen tussen de twee. Maar evengoed lichamen als materiaal in de wereld: de materialiteit van het eigen lichaam en de verschillende soorten van materialiteit bij niet-menselijke lichamen, levende en nietlevende. Mijn danstraining heeft mijn werk dus voor een groot stuk gevoed, maar niet op een danstechnische manier. Dat is voor mij een ander discipline – dat ik erg respecteer, maar verlaten heb.

Wat is volgens jou de rol van de kunstenaar? En wat zou de relatie van de kunstenaar moeten zijn tot de maatschappij, de kunstwereld en de cultuurhuizen waarin hij of zij werkt?

Op die eerste vraag bestaan veel verschillende antwoorden, die elke kunstenaar op een heel persoonlijke manier invult. Een goed werkende praktijk ontwikkelt zich in twee richtingen: zowel kunstenaars als theaters doen hun best om voor iedereen de juiste werkomstandigheden te creëren. Ik denk dat iedereen een grote verantwoordelijkheid heeft om te garanderen dat die omstandigheden ook ethisch en politiek gezond zijn.

Tegelijk zorgen de kunstenaars en instellingen samen voor een erg belangrijke creatieve publieke ruimte, dat een sociaal draagvlak heeft en een politieke visie uitdraagt. De keuzes die een instelling maakt over het type openbare ruimte die ze aanbiedt, gaan ver: hoeveel kost het om iets te eten op die plek? Hoe toegankelijk is ze? Welk publiek wordt er uitgenodigd? Waar komen sponsoring en subsidies vandaan? Achter al die dingen gaat een diepgaande ethos schuil, die ik erg belangrijk vind. Volgens mij krijgen zowel kunstenaars als instellingen de mogelijkheid om elkaar op dit vlak uit te dagen. Hopelijk dagen ze zo ook meteen het publiek uit en laten ze hen beseffen dat het om meer draait dan enkel een voorstelling te zien. De theaterruimte is ook een plek waar mensen samenkomen, gefinancierd met overheidsmiddelen. Hier wordt een publiek een echte gemeenschap.

Dat alles creëert een structureel kader, met daar middenin een ruimte waarin het kunstwerk verschijnt. Die ruimte zou haar maximale vrijheid moeten behouden – voor de kunstenaars om te begrijpen wat ze het publiek te bieden hebben en voor de toeschouwers om het te ontdekken en erover te reflecteren.

Kate McIntosh est née en Nouvelle-Zélande, mais vit à Bruxelles, ce qui a notablement changé sa pratique. Attirée par l’inconnu, chaque pièce qu’elle crée est un défi qu’elle se lance. Le public et sa relation à l’espace de performance jouent un rôle central. « Lorsque je suis spectatrice, je suis parfois plus curieuse des gens autour de moi que de ce qui se passe sur scène. » Commençons par le début. Vous avez entamé votre carrière en tant que danseuse, mais aujourd’hui votre œuvre est transdisciplinaire. Comment en êtes-vous arrivée là ?

J’ai étudié la danse et j’ai travaillé en tant que danseuse pendant de nombreuses années, jusqu’à la trentaine. Puis, en 2004, j’ai commencé à créer mon propre travail et j’ai quasi complètement arrêté de m’exercer.

Quelques années auparavant, j’avais déménagé à Bruxelles où la transversalité entre différentes formes d’art m’a enthousiasmée. Dans d’autres pays, j’avais fait face à des frontières tellement strictes entre les genres.

C’était une véritable révélation qu’un danseur puisse engager une conversation et une collaboration intéressantes avec un peintre ou un écrivain. J’étais très curieuse d’explorer d’autres expressions artistiques, aussi bien en tant que collaboratrice que créatrice.

Depuis lors, un élément récurrent dans mon travail est de souvent faire des choses sans vraiment savoir comment les faire, des choses avec lesquelles je n’ai que très peu d’expérience. Chaque nouvelle production est quelque chose que je n’ai jamais essayé auparavant et me fait adopter une approche très exploratoire.

Dans mon travail, on peut observer ma sensibilité pour le corps : les corps humains, les corps animaux et les frontières entre les deux. Mais aussi les corps comme matériaux du monde : la matérialité de son propre corps et les différentes matérialités des corps non humains, vivants ou pas. De toute évidence,

ma formation de danse a fortement influencé mon travail, mais pas au sens technique de la danse. Pour moi, c’est une autre discipline que je respecte énormément, mais que j’ai abandonnée.

Quel est selon vous le rôle de l’artiste ? Et quelle devrait être son rapport à la société, au monde des arts et aux maisons de la culture dans lesquelles il ou elle travaille ?

Je pense qu’il y a de nombreuses réponses à cette première question. Chaque artiste y répondra de manière très personnelle. Le développement d’une bonne pratique est un élément à double sens : aussi bien les artistes que les théâtres tentent de créer les conditions adéquates pour que chacun puisse travailler. Je pense que chacun a la responsabilité considérable de s’assurer que ces conditions soient saines sur le plan éthique et politique.

Entre-temps, les artistes et les institutions procurent un espace public créatif très important qui a des effets sociaux et une vision politique. Les choix qu’opère une institution quant au type d’espace public qu’elle fournit sont très étendus ; cela va du prix de la nourriture qui y est servie, à son accessibilité, aux publics qui s’y rendent, à ses sponsors et à la provenance des financements… Derrière tout cela, il y a une véritable philosophie que je trouve très importante. Et je pense qu’aussi bien les artistes que les institutions ont la possibilité de se remettre mutuellement en question à ce sujet. Il est à espérer qu’ils incitent aussi le public à prendre conscience qu’il ne s’agit pas seulement d’aller voir un spectacle. L’espace du théâtre est aussi un lieu de rencontre financé par des deniers publics. Dans ces conditions, le public devient une véritable communauté.

Tout ceci crée un cadre structurel au milieu duquel se situe un espace dans lequel émerge l’œuvre d’art.

Cet espace devrait défendre un maximum de libertés – afin que l’artiste comprenne ce qu’il offre et que le public puisse rencontrer et entrer en dialogue avec cette offre.

Born in New Zealand, but living in Brussels. Which has strikingly changed her practice.

Attracted by the unknown, every piece Kate McIntosh makes is a challenge for herself.

The audience and its relation to the performance space play a central role. ‘When I sit in an audience, I’m sometimes more curious about the people around me, than about what’s actually happening on stage.’

Let’s start with the beginning. You started as a dancer, but your work today crosses over many disciplines.

How did you get there?

I trained and worked as a dancer for many years until my thirties. Then in 2004 I started to make my own work and stopped my dance training pretty much completely. A few years before, I had moved to Brussels and became excited by the mix of different art forms I found here. In other countries I’d experienced such strict boundaries between the genres. It was a real revelation that a dancer could have an interesting conversation and collaboration with a painter or writer. I became very curious about exploring other art forms both as a collaborator and as a maker.

Since then an on-going theme in my work is that I am often doing things I don’t know how to do and in which I have very little experience. Every new production is something that I never tried before and to which I have a very exploratory approach.

Through my work you can see my feeling for the body: human bodies, animal bodies and the boundaries between both. But also bodies as materials in the world: the materiality of one’s own body and the different kinds of materiality in non-human bodies, living and not living. So for sure, my dance training informed a great deal of my work, but not in a technical dance sense. For me that is another discipline, which I respect a lot, but left.

What would you say is the role of an artist? And what should his relation be towards society, the arts world, and the culture houses he works in?

I think there are many answers to that first question. Every artists fills this in in a very personal way.

The development of a good working practice is a two-way thing: both artists and theatres are busy creating the right conditions for everyone to work. I think they have a strong responsibility to make sure that those conditions are ethically and politically healthy.

Meanwhile, both the artists and the institutions provide a very important creative public space, which has social effects and a political vision. The choices an institution makes about the kind of public space it provides, go far: how expensive is the food served in that place? What is its accessibility? Who are the audiences invited? Where do the sponsors and the funding come from? Behind all these things lies a deep ethos, which I consider very important. And I think both the artists and the institutions have a chance to challenge each other around this. Hopefully they also challenge the audience to be aware that it’s not only about going to see a show. The theatre space is also a gathering spot, financed by public money. An audience then becomes a real community.

All this creates a structural framework, in the middle of which is a space where the artwork appears. That space should defend a maximum of freedom – for the artist to understand what they’re offering and for the audience to meet and negotiate it.

Christophe Meierhans is muzikant, theatermaker, performer en zelfs film- en tentoonstellingsmaker. Door het diverse oeuvre van de Zwitser loopt één rode draad: zijn interesse in het collectieve en de gevolgen die ontstaan wanneer je in het collectieve meestapt. ‘Waarom zou een discussie over een politiek thema in een voorstelling minder echt zijn dan wanneer je diezelfde discussie buiten de theaterzaal voert?’

Je plaatst jezelf met je voorstellingen vaak in een erg kwetsbare positie: vaak weet je vooraf niet hoe een stuk precies zal eindigen en vraag je je publiek om in diezelfde speculatieve situatie mee te stappen. Hoe zie je jouw rol als kunstenaar in dat licht?

Ik creëer eerder situaties dan voorstellingen. Ik gebruik theater en dramaturgie om situaties op scène te brengen die niet perse fictief zijn, maar wel tot een andere realiteit behoren. Dan pas wordt het interessant voor mij: waarom zou een discussie over een echt politiek thema minder echt zijn wanneer je ze voert in mijn voorstelling No use for broken clay pots, dan wanneer je dat doet buiten de theaterzalen? Soms zijn mensen verontwaardigd als ze beseffen dat ik niet ‘ernstig’ was in een stuk. Maar wat is ernst?

Kwetsbaarheid is een vast ingrediënt als je werkt met publieksparticipatie, omdat je mensen vraagt deel te nemen zonder dat ze weten wat hen te wachten staat. Om hun vertrouwen te winnen, moet je jezelf – of de voorstelling – in een even kwetsbare positie plaatsen als je publiek. Als er risico’s zijn, moet je ze samen nemen. Je kunt niet aan mensen vragen risico’s te nemen en dan zelf gezellig achterover leunen. In Verein zur Aufhebung des Notwendigen ga je het podium op, doe je iets, en als je het verknoeit, zal niemand je helpen, of het moest een andere behulpzame toeschouwer zijn. Tegelijk kan de voorstelling op elk ogenblik compleet de mist in gaan. Iemand kan bijvoorbeeld het script in het water gooien. Zonder script is de voorstelling afgelopen, want er is geen back-up. Als je niet goed voor de voorstelling zorgt, houdt ze op.

In het project Fondo Speculativo di Provvidenza, dat ik samen met Luigi Coppola doe, beslissen de toeschouwers wat er moet gebeuren met een som geld die collectief is opgehaald. Eén stem kan alles veranderen.

Daar draait macht om: zodra je iets kunt veranderen, kun je dat ook doen in slechte zin. Een aanbod is nooit enkel positief. Het is als dat kortverhaal van Borges, De loterij in Babylonië, waarin niemand wil deelnemen aan een loterij omdat je er alleen maar kunt winnen. Wanneer ze verliezende loten toevoegen, wordt spelen plots verslavend. Er is iets onechts aan louter positieve dingen – ze druisen in tegen elke vorm van intuïtie.

Le Suisse Christophe Meierhans est un artiste pluridisciplinaire : ce musicien, créateur de théâtre et performeur a même réalisé des films et monté des expositions. Son œuvre présente cependant un aspect récurrent : l’analyse du collectif et des conséquences qu’entraîne ce caractère collectif lorsqu’on s’y engage. « Quand on aborde une véritable question politique dans une pièce de théâtre, pourquoi serait-ce moins réel, moins authentique qu’en dehors du théâtre ? »

Sinds 2000 kom je geregeld naar Brussel. Welke band heb je met de stad? En hoe zou je Brussel in je toekomstige werk willen betrekken?

Ik heb een erg complexe band met Brussel. Aangezien ik Franstalig ben, voelde Brussel altijd een beetje als thuiskomen. Toch kan ik me niet voorstellen dat ik voor altijd in Brussel zou blijven. Er is nauwelijks groen in deze stad. Of toch zeker geen natuur die je overweldigt en die je klein doet voelen, zoals in de bergen. Ik ben en blijf een Zwitser, remember.

Ik hoop wel dat mijn werk betrekking heeft op de stad, zelfs al staat het in een theaterzaal. Ik voel me niet specifiek tot de publieke ruimte óf tot het theater aangetrokken, de zaal is momenteel gewoon logischer voor de ideeën die ik heb.

Er is een beeld dat ik nogal inspirerend vind als ik manieren wil bedenken waarop de realiteit binnen de artistieke of theatrale bubbel zich kan verhouden tot de wereld erbuiten: groepen burgers bouwen luidsprekers en hangen ze overal op in de stad. De luidsprekers zijn verbonden door een dikke gele kabel, die door de deur van het theater naar binnen loopt, zodat de deur niet meer dicht kan. In de theaterruimte zelf houden andere burgers politieke toespraken. Het fictionele kader laat hen toe om dingen te zeggen en te schrijven die ze buiten op het plein misschien niet zouden durven. Maar, door de kabel die het theater uit loopt en door de luidsprekers, kan heel de stad de toespraken horen.

Vous vous mettez souvent dans une position très vulnérable lorsque vous ne savez pas vraiment comment une pièce de théâtre va se terminer et que vous tentez de convaincre le public d’entrer dans la même situation spéculative. Comment considérez-vous votre rôle d’artiste sous ce jour ?

Je tente davantage de créer des situations que des pièces de théâtre. J’utilise le théâtre et la dramaturgie pour créer des situations qui, plutôt qu’être de la fiction, relèvent d’une réalité différente. C’est là que les choses deviennent intéressantes pour moi : quand on discute d’une véritable question politique dans No use for broken clay potss, en quoi serait-ce moins réel que si on le faisait ailleurs ? Parfois, les gens sont offensés parce qu’ils se rendent compte que je n’étais pas « sérieux » dans la pièce. Mais que signifie sérieux ?

La vulnérabilité est inévitable lorsqu’on crée de la participation, parce qu’on demande aux spectateurs de s’engager sans le savoir. Pour gagner cette confiance, il faut que sa propre position, ou celle de la pièce, soit 12

aussi vulnérable que celle du public. S’il y a des risques, il faut les prendre ensemble. On ne peut pas demander au public de prendre des risques, et se renverser dans un fauteuil pour voir ce que ça donne. Dans Verein zur Aufhebung des Notwendigen, on monte sur scène, on fait quelque chose et si on le gâche, il n’y a qu’un autre spectateur qui puisse venir à la rescousse. En même temps, la pièce peut elle-même mal tourner à tout moment. Quelqu’un pourrait prendre le scénario et le jeter dans l’eau. Alors, tout est fini : le scénario est parti et il n’y a pas de sauvegarde. Si l’on ne porte pas toute son attention à la pièce, elle s’arrête.

Le projet Fondo Speculativo di Provvidenza, que je réalise avec Luigi Coppola, met chaque membre du public dans la position de devoir décider ce qu’il faut faire d’une somme d’argent réunie par la collectivité. Ici, une seule voix peut tout changer. C’est ce qui caractérise l’agentivité : dès qu’on peut changer quelque chose, on peut aussi le changer pour le pire. Ce qui est proposé n’est jamais exclusivement positif. C’est comme dans La loterie à Babylone, la nouvelle de Borges, où personne ne veut participer à la loterie parce qu’on ne peut que gagner. Mais dès que des numéros non gagnants sont introduits dans le jeu, jouer devient compulsif. Il y a quelque chose d’irréel à l’exclusivement positif, c’est totalement contre-intuitif.

Vous avez commencé à travailler à Bruxelles, où vous vivez entre-temps, à partir de 2000. Quelle relation entretenez-vous avec la ville ? Et comment souhaiteriez-vous vous investir vis-à-vis de Bruxelles dans vos futures productions ?

C’est une relation très complexe. Étant francophone, venir à Bruxelles me donnait toujours un peu l’impression de rentrer chez moi. Par ailleurs, je n’imagine pas y vivre définitivement. Il y a à peine de la nature dans la région, ou tout du moins pas une nature qui subjugue, qui coupe le souffle et nous fait à nouveau nous sentir petits, comme dans les montagnes. N’oubliez pas que je suis Suisse.

J’espère que mon travail ne s’investit pas trop vis-à-vis de la ville, même s’il s’articule dans l’espace théâtral. Je n’aspire pas spécifiquement à un espace public ou à un théâtre, c’est juste le lieu le plus approprié pour les idées qui me viennent en ce moment.

Une image qui me paraît inspirante pour concevoir des manières de relier la réalité artistique ou théâtrale à la réalité en dehors de ces bulles est celle de groupes de citoyens construisant des haut-parleurs qu’ils disposeraient partout dans la ville et qui seraient raccordés par un gros câble jaune entrant au théâtre par la porte, de sorte qu’on ne puisse plus la fermer. À l’intérieur du théâtre, d’autres citoyens tiendraient des discours politiques. Le cadre fictionnel leur permettrait d’écrire et de dire des choses qu’ils n’oseraient peut-être pas proclamer à l’extérieur. Toutefois, à travers les haut-parleurs auxquels est raccordé le théâtre, les discours pourraient être entendus dans toute la ville.

The Swiss Christophe Meierhans is musician, theatre maker, performer and even made films and exhibitions. One aspect coming back in his works however, is his investigation in the collective and the consequences it produces when you step into this collective. ‘If you’re discussing a real political issue in a play, why is it less real than when you would do it outside?’

You often put yourself in a very vulnerable position, when you don’t really know how a piece will end – and try to convince your audience to enter the same speculative situation. How do you consider your role as an artist in this light?

I’m more trying to create situations rather than pieces. I’m using theatre and dramaturgy to create situations which, rather than being fiction, belong to a different reality. That’s where things become interesting for me: if you’re discussing a real political issue in No use for broken clay pots, why is it less real than when you would do it outside? Sometimes, people are offended because they realize that I was not ‘serious’ in the piece. But then what is serious?

Vulnerability is unavoidable when you create participation because you ask people to engage without knowing. To gain this confidence you have to make your position, or that of the piece, as vulnerable as the audience’s. If there are risks, you have to take them together. You can’t ask people to take risks and lean back yourself. In Verein zur Aufhebung des Notwendigen you go on stage, do something and if you mess it up, nobody’s going to help you if not another spectator. At the same time the piece itself can also go wrong at any moment. Someone could take the script and throw it into the water. Then it’s finished: the script is gone and there is no back-up. If you don’t take care of the piece, the piece stops.

In the project Fondo Speculativo di Provvidenza, which I do with Luigi Coppola, we put each audience member in the position of having to decide about what should be done with a sum of money that has been raised collectively. Here, one voice can change everything. That is what agency is about: the moment you can change something, you can also change it for the worse. What is offered is never only a plus. It’s like Borges’ short story Lottery in Babylon where nobody wants to take part in a lottery because you could only win. But the moment they introduce unlucky numbers in the draw, the playing becomes addictive. There is something unreal about only plus, it contradicts any intuition.

You started coming to Brussels in 2000. What’s your relation with the city? And how would you like to engage with Brussels in future work?

It’s a very complex relation. Since I’m French speaking, coming to Brussels always felt a bit like coming 13

home. On the other hand, I can’t imagine living in Brussels forever. There is hardly nature in this place. Or at least not nature where you get overwhelmed and where you feel small again like in the mountains. I am Swiss, remember.

I hope the work I do does engage with the city even though it’s in the theatre space. I don’t specifically crave for public space or for theatre, one just makes more sense for the ideas I have at the moment.

There’s an image I have which I find kind of inspiring for thinking ways in which reality inside of the artistic or theatre bubble could relate with the reality outside of it: groups of citizens building speakers and hanging them everywhere in the city. The speakers are connected with a big fat yellow cable, that enters the door of the theatre, so you can’t close it anymore. Inside the theatre space, other citizens hold political speeches. The fictional framework enables them to write and say things they wouldn’t perhaps dare to deliver on the square outside. Yet, through the cable reaching out of the theatre and through the speakers, the speeches can be heard in the entire city.

Choreograaf en danser Radouan Mriziga volgde dansopleidingen in Marokko en Tunesië en kwam daarna naar PARTS in Brussel. Hij is geïntrigeerd door de relatie tussen het lichaam en zijn omgeving. Vandaar dat architectuur zich als een rode draad door zijn werk weeft.

‘De vrijheid om verschillende contexten te kunnen ervaren, en dan verrast te zijn over hoe zo’n context iets kan toevoegen aan het werk, is erg belangrijk voor me.’

Hoe ben je met dans begonnen en hoe heeft dans je van Marokko naar Brussel gebracht?

Waar ik ben opgegroeid was het niet vanzelfsprekend om voor hedendaagse dans te kiezen. Toch is mijn passie voor dans vrij organisch ontstaan. Ik was bijvoorbeeld altijd bezig met verschillende soorten sport en street dance. In het begin was dans dus een van vele hobby’s, maar al snel kreeg ik zin om er elke dag mee bezig te zijn. Helaas bestond in Marokko geen echte dansscène – er was nergens ondersteuning, er waren geen scholen – dus moest ik mijn eigen weg zien te vinden. Op een gegeven ogenblik ontmoette ik Jacques Garros en Jean Masse. Zij zouden mijn eerste mentoren worden. Ik volgde een workshop bij hen in het Marokkaanse Merkness. Die inspireerde me om een aanvraag in te dienen voor een dansopleiding in Tunesië. Ze legden veel nadruk op lichaamswerk en op het belang van inzicht in de menselijke anatomie. Dat heeft veel invloed gehad op mijn verdere opleiding. Na Tunesië trok ik naar Frankrijk om opnieuw bij Jacques en Jean te gaan studeren, maar ik voelde dat ik ook nieuwe visies nodig had. Ik hoorde over PARTS, deed een aanvraag, en kwam naar Brussel. Wat me daar vooral aantrok – bovenop de technische danstraining – was de nadruk op choreografie en performance en de compleet nieuwe manier om met theorie om te gaan. PARTS heeft een heel open blik op theorie als een mogelijke bron voor een voorstelling. De combinatie van de verschillende opleidingen beviel me: ik hou er niet van om op één enkel standpunt vast te blijven zitten. Elke opleiding wees me de weg naar de volgende. Telkens had ik iets specifieks om op te reageren, kon ik verder zoeken en was ik verplicht om nieuwe manieren van denken te ontwikkelen.

Je ontwikkeling als danser bracht je naar een ander continent. Hoe geef je vorm aan de afstand tussen je land van herkomst en je huidige woonplaats?

Ik woon en werk graag in Brussel, maar ik wil mijn werk zeker ook buiten Centraal Europa opvoeren.

Mijn culturele achtergrond is één van mijn inspiratiebronnen, dus moet ik ermee in contact blijven. Vandaag zijn er in Marokko heel wat meer mogelijkheden voor een danser dan toen ik pas begon. Ik ben er een goed netwerk aan het opbouwen en heb er verschillende projecten lopen.

Wat zijn de basiselementen die je in elk van je creaties laat terugkeren?

Ik vraag me af op welke manier ik dans en choreografie kan gebruiken om net uit de disciplines dans en choreografie te breken. Ik wil de kennis van mijn lichaam en beweging uitbreiden om nieuwe dingen te creëren en me anders tot mijn omgeving te verhouden. Die vragen staan al sinds het prille begin centraal in mijn werk. Gaandeweg zijn daar lagen bovenop gekomen. Ik raakte bijvoorbeeld geïntrigeerd door de handeling van bouwen en construeren. Daardoor ben ik me beginnen verdiepen in architectuur en wiskunde – in de Arabische architectuur speelt wiskunde een grote symbolische rol. Vanuit dat onderzoek ben ik ideeën beginnen te ontwikkelen over de verhouding tussen rede, lichaam en geest – en dat werd een essentieel deel van mijn werk.

Le chorégraphe et danseur Radouan Mriziga a étudié la danse à Marrakech, puis en Tunisie, et ensuite à PARTS, à Bruxelles. Intéressé par la relation entre le corps et son environnement, c’est l’architecture qui constitue le fil rouge à travers son œuvre. « Pour moi, l’important est d’avoir la liberté de présenter mon travail dans des contextes différents et d’être surpris de constater à quel point chaque contexte peut ajouter quelque chose au travail. » Comment en êtes-vous venus à vous intéresser à la danse et pourquoi vous a-t-elle amené du Maroc à Bruxelles ?

Mon intérêt pour la danse m’est venu de manière assez organique, bien que la danse contemporaine n’ait pas fait partie intégrante du contexte dans lequel j’ai grandi. J’ai toujours pratiqué plusieurs activités physiques : différents sports et de la street dance. Au départ, la danse était un intérêt parmi d’autres, mais j’ai rapidement eu envie d’en faire une pratique quotidienne. Au Maroc, il n’y avait cependant pas de scène de danse – ni subventions ni écoles d’ailleurs –, donc il m’a fallu développer ma propre pratique. À un moment donné, j’ai rencontré deux artistes qui allaient devenir mes premiers véritables mentors, Jacques Garros et Jean Masse. Ils ont animé un atelier à Meknès (Maroc) et m’ont suggéré de m’inscrire dans une école de danse en Tunisie, où l’on m’a transmis l’importance du travail corporel et une connaissance scientifique de l’anatomie.

Cela a eu un grand impact sur mon éducation artistique. Après la Tunisie, je suis parti en France poursuivre mes études avec Jacques et Jean, mais j’ai senti qu’il me fallait d’autres perspectives. J’ai entendu parler de PARTS, j’ai posé ma candidature et je suis venu à Bruxelles. Ce qui m’a attiré à PARTS, outre la formation technique, était l’accent mis sur la chorégraphie et la performance, et une façon différente d’aborder la théorie que celle qui m’avait été proposée dans mes formations précédentes. À PARTS, la notion de théorie était très étendue et ouverte et devenait ainsi une source possible de spectacle. La combinaison de différentes formations m’a bien convenu, moi qui n’ai jamais aimé l’idée d’être coincé dans une seule conception. Chaque formation m’a poussé vers la suivante, sentant chaque fois qu’il me fallait réagir à quelque chose de spécifique, continuer à chercher, découvrir un nouveau mode de pensée.

Votre évolution de danseur vous a mené vers un autre continent. Comment donnez-vous corps à la distance entre votre lieu d’origine et votre contexte de vie actuel ?

J’aime vivre et travailler à Bruxelles, mais depuis que j’ai achevé mes études à PARTS, je ressens le besoin de ne pas me produire exclusivement en Europe occidentale. Mes antécédents culturels sont en partie le berceau de mes intérêts et de mon inspiration, donc il me faut rester en lien avec cette part de moi. À l’heure actuelle, il y a plus de possibilités pour la danse au Maroc. J’y établis un bon réseau et je travaille à différents projets.

Quels sont les principes clés de votre pratique artistique qui résonnent dans toutes vos créations ?

Une question importante pour moi est de savoir comment me servir de la danse et de la chorégraphie en tant qu’outils pour aller au-delà de ces disciplines. Je m’intéresse à l’exploration de la connaissance du corps et du mouvement pour pouvoir produire de nouvelles choses et développer un rapport différent à l’environnement direct. Cette question est récurrente depuis le début de mon parcours artistique. D’autres strates s’y sont ajoutées de manière organique. Par exemple, mon intérêt initial pour l’édification et la construction en tant qu’actions m’a amené à effectuer des recherches sur l’architecture et les mathématiques. Dans l’architecture arabe, les mathématiques jouent un rôle symbolique. The choreographer and dancer Radouan Mriziga studied dance in Marrakesh and Tunisia and continued his career at PARTS in Brussels. Although he is fascinated by the relationship between the body and its surroundings, it is actually architecture that forms the central leitmotif in his work. ‘The important thing for me is to have the freedom to be able to present in different contexts, and to be surprised by how a context can add something to the work.’

How did you first get involved with dance and why did it bring you from Morocco to Brussels?

My interest in dance came quite organically, though I grew up in a context where contemporary dance was not a given. I’ve always done a lot of bodily activities: different sports and street-dance. At first, dance was more a general interest, but I quickly wanted to develop it as a daily practice. In Morocco, however, there was no dance scene – no fundamental support or schools – so I had to find my own way to practice dance. At some point, I met two artists who would become my first real mentors, Jacques Garros and Jean Masse. They gave a workshop in Merkness in Morocco and inspired me to apply for a dance school in Tunisia. What they taught me was an emphasis on bodywork as well as scientific insight into anatomy. This made a huge impact on my artistic education. After Tunisia, I went to France to study with Jacques and Jean again, but I felt I needed other insights. I heard about PARTS, applied, and came to Brussels. Apart from the technical dance training, what attracted me to PARTS was the emphasis on choreography and performance, and a different way of dealing with theory than what I had encountered in previous schools. At PARTS, the idea of theory was very open and broad, it became a possible source for performance. The combination of different trainings worked well for me – I never liked the idea of being stuck in one vision. Every training pushed me to the next, in that I felt I had to react to something specific, to search further, to find a different mode of thinking.

Your development as a dancer brought you to a different continent. How do you give shape to the distance between your place of origin and your current residence?

I really enjoy working and living here in Brussels, but since I graduated from PARTS, I have felt the need to perform my work not only in Central Europe. My cultural background is partly where my interests and inspirations come from, so I need to maintain a relationship with it. There are more possibilities to work 15

Vera Tussing haalde haar diploma aan de London Contemporary Dance School. Ze werkt in België, Groot-Brittannië en Europa als choreograaf, maker en danser. In haar werk onderzoekt ze de relatie tussen danser en publiek, en de manier waarop die relatie kan veranderen.

What are the key principles in your artistic work that resonate through every creation?

An important question for me is what I can do with dance and choreography as tools to reach beyond dance and choreography as disciplines. I’m interested in exploring the knowledge of body and movement to produce new things and to relate to our surroundings differently. This question has been present since the beginning of my artistic trajectory. And it organically led me to other layers. For example, I started to be interested in building and constructing as actions, which led me to research architecture and mathematics.

In Arabic architecture, mathematics plays an important symbolic role. From there, I started developing ideas about the relationship between mind, body and spirit, which became an essential part of all my artistic work.

Hoe heeft je opleiding je artistieke werk beïnvloed?

Als kind in Freiburg ging ik naar een zogenaamde Waldorfschule, wat jullie hier een Steinerschool noemen. De school benaderde elk vak tegelijk vanuit theoretische én praktische hoek. We bouwden huizen, naaiden, kerfden, werkten met hout, enzovoort. Dat constant wisselende handwerk heeft mijn praktijk zeker beïnvloed, vooral de manier waarop ik verschillende soorten materiaal benader. Mijn leraar houtbewerking en beeldhouwen heeft me veel bijgebracht. Ook mijn balletlerares in Freiburg was erg progressief en zag ballet heel ruim. Zij bracht me in contact met wat je ‘somatische technieken’ zou kunnen noemen. Later in Londen, aan de school voor hedendaagse dans The Place, klikte het ook altijd het best met de docenten die meer geïnteresseerd waren in dialoog en creatie dan in reproductie van bestaande vormen en processen.

Naar Brussel komen was een openbaring. Ik heb er een erg empirische manier van werken ontwikkeld – erg praktijkgericht. Ik probeer dingen uit, en schort daarbij mijn eigen oordeel op. Zoiets lukt trouwens beter in Brussel dan in Londen. In Brussel gaat dans veel verder dan louter esthetiek: het kan er heel pure en gereduceerde vormen aannemen, maar ook bijzonder hybride zijn. En natuurlijk voel ik me daar erg toe aangetrokken. Ik wist snel dat Brussel voor mij de juiste context was en dus bleef ik. Eerst om samen te werken met Albert Quesada, later om mijn eigen werk te creëren.

Wat verwacht je van je residentie in het Kaaitheater?

Ik was verrast door de uitnodiging, maar ze kwam precies op het juiste moment. Ik had net een goed werkritme gevonden: er ontstonden de krijtlijnen van wat ik deed. Daarom wil ik tijdens mijn residentie in Kaai niet zozeer radicaal nieuwe dingen uitproberen. Ik wil vooral de praktijk die ik nog maar pas heb opgezet uitbreiden en exploreren. Zo hebben we bij The Palm of Your Hand slechtziende en blinde toeschouwers in het werk uitgenodigd. Daarmee sloot de productie aan bij het engagement van Kaaitheater in het Humane Body European Network. Het was een prima start van mijn residentie. Ik vind het ook fijn om deel uit te maken van een groep residenten. Sommigen van hen kende ik ook al goed, zoals Radouan Mriziga en Benjamin Vandewalle. Tot slot hou ik ervan om het theater langs binnen en langs buiten te onderzoeken. Een van mijn ideeën is om The Palm of Your Hand naar de verschillende wijken van Brussel te brengen, op onverwachte plekken en onverwachte momenten.

Son œuvre explore la relation entre les danseurs et le public et les possibilités de transformation de cette relation. « L’un des défis de mon travail est d’établir le contact et de réaliser une rencontre avec l’Autre plutôt que de reconstituer une forme chorégraphique. » Dans quelle mesure votre formation a-t-elle influencé l’œuvre que vous développez à l’heure actuelle ?

Ma scolarité à Freiburg a été très influente. J’ai fréquenté la Waldorfschule, l’équivalent d’une école Steiner ici, où chaque sujet était abordé à partir d’un angle théorique et pratique. Nous avons construit des maisons, fait de la couture, de la découpe, nous avons travaillé le bois, etc. Cette alternance permanente de travaux manuels a beaucoup influencé ma pratique professionnelle, en particulier, mon approche de différents types de matériaux. Mon professeur de menuiserie et de sculpture m’a ouvert de multiples horizons. Ma professeure de ballet à Freiburg était également très progressiste et avait une conception très large du ballet. Elle m’a fait découvrir ce que l’on pourrait qualifier de « techniques somatiques ». Par la suite, à Londres, à l’école de danse contemporaine The Place, j’ai surtout accroché avec les professeurs qui s’intéressaient au dialogue et à la création plutôt qu’à la reproduction de formes et de processus déjà existants.

La Belgique a été une révélation pour moi : j’y ai développé un mode de travail très empirique, très

orienté sur la pratique. J’essaie des choses, en excluant provisoirement mon propre jugement. C’est plus facile de faire cela à Bruxelles qu’à Londres, soit dit en passant. À Bruxelles, on conçoit la danse comme au-delà de l’« esthétique » : elle existe sous forme très pure et minimale, mais aussi sous toutes sortes de déclinaisons hybrides, ce qui m’attire bien entendu. Je savais d’emblée que c’était le contexte qui me convenait. Je suis d’abord restée à Bruxelles pour travailler avec Albert Quesada, et plus tard pour créer mon propre travail.

Qu’attendez-vous de votre résidence au Kaaitheater ?

L’invitation pour une résidence m’a pris par surprise, mais elle est aussi arrivée à un moment de mon évolution professionnelle où j’ai enfin trouvé un cycle de travail qui me satisfait, où une sensation de trajectoire commence à se dessiner. En somme, la résidence au Kaai n’est pas une occasion de faire quelque chose de radicalement nouveau, il s’agit plutôt de me permettre d’étendre et d’explorer la pratique que je viens (à peine) d’établir. Je dois avouer que transformer The Palm of Your Hand en une collaboration qui invite des personnes mal voyantes ou non-voyantes à assister au spectacle – un engagement du Kaaitheater envers le réseau européen Humane Body European Network – est un point de départ très réussi pour cette résidence. L’idée qu’il y ait un groupe de résidents me plaît beaucoup et je connais très bien certains d’entre eux, comme Radouan Mriziga et Benjamin Vandewalle. J’aime aussi beaucoup explorer l’intérieur et l’extérieur des théâtres. L’une de mes idées est de présenter The Palm of Your Hand dans différentes communes de Bruxelles, dans des lieux inattendus, à des moments inattendus.

Vera Tussing graduated from the London Contemporary Dance School, and has worked as a choreographer, creator and dancer throughout Belgium, the UK and Europe. She explores the relation between dancers and the audience and how this relation can transform. ‘A big challenge in my work is to actually make contact and to perform an encounter with the other rather than a ‘re-enactment’ of choreographic form.’

In which way did your education influence the artistic work you make now?

My school education in Freiburg was very influential. I attended a Waldorfschule, which in Belgian is called a Steiner School. The school approached every subject from a theoretical and a practical angle. We built houses, did sewing, cutting, we worked with wood and so on. This constant switching between crafts influenced my working practice, in particular the method of approaching different kinds of materials. My woodwork and sculpture teacher opened my eyes to many different things. My ballet teacher in Freiburg was also very progressive and had a very broad sense of ballet. She introduced me to what one might call ‘somatic techniques’. Later, in London, at the contemporary dance school The Place, I mostly related to the teachers who were interested in dialogue and creation rather than the reproduction of pre-existing forms and processes.

Coming to Brussels was a big eye-opener for me. I developed a very empirical way of working here – very hands-on. I try things out, suspending my own judgment. This is easier in Brussels than in London, by the way. Dance in Brussels is understood as being beyond the ‘aesthetic’: it exists in very ‘pure’ and reduced forms, but also in all sorts of hybrid states, which of course I am drawn to. I knew this was the right context for me. I stayed in Brussels first to collaborate with Albert Quesada, and later to make my own work.

What do you expect from your residency at the Kaaitheater?

The invitation for the residency came as a surprise to me. But it also came at a stage in my work where I had finally found a working cycle that I was happy with. There was a sense of a trajectory that started to appear. So initially, the Kaai residency is not about letting me do something radically new – its more about allowing me to extend and explore the practice I have (only just) established. I have to say that shifting The Palm of Your Hand into a collaboration that invites partially sighted and blind audiences into the work is a very successful starting point for this, as part of Kaaitheater’s commitment to Humane Body European Network. I also like the idea of being a group of residents. I know some of them very well, like Radouan Mriziga and Benjamin Vandewalle. I like to explore the inside and the outside of the theatre. One of my ideas is to perform The Palm of Your Hand in different communes in Brussels, locating the work in unexpected spaces, at unexpected times.

Sinds hij afstudeerde aan PARTS, is Michiel Vandevelde choreograaf, curator en schrijver.

Een rode draad doorheen zijn werk is een uitgesproken politiek en artistiek activisme. In plaats van te t wachten tot alles beter wordt, pleit hij ervoor om zelf het heft in handen te nemen.

Je verhoudt je op verschillende manieren tot het culturele veld: je maakt voorstellingen, co-cureert onder andere het Bâtard-festival, zit in de redactie van Etcetera en schrijft artikels. Hoe staat dit alles in relatie tot elkaar?

Alleszins niet los van elkaar. Misschien valt mijn praktijk zelfs te omschrijven als curatorschap: ik werk altijd met materiaal van anderen dat ik reapproprieer. Dit leidt tot nieuwe samenstellingen waarmee ik iets nieuws vertel – zowel bij mijn dans- en theaterwerk als in het schrijven en cureren. Ik gebruik het principe van ‘kannibalisme’, dat ik ontleen aan de Braziliaanse schrijver Oswalde de Andrade. Hij ziet kannibalisme metaforisch, als het opeten van een invasieve of hegemonische cultuur om die vervolgens te verteren en uit te scheiden in een andere vorm. Hoewel de Westerse samenleving mij niet gekoloniseerd heeft, ga ik er ook niet mee akkoord. Wat beschouw ik invasief in mijn leven, of – breder – in de samenleving? Los daarvan kan het ene discipline ook het andere inspireren. Toen ik begon te repeteren voor Antithesis, the future of the image (2015) schreef ik eerst heel veel. Die teksten kwamen uiteindelijk terecht in een magazine. Tegelijkertijd hebben die teksten geleid tot de voorstelling.

De stad is voor jou een structuur waarin zich voor de kunsten zo’n alternatief systeem kan ontwikkelen.

Zoek je ook naar een actieve betrokkenheid tot de stad zelf? Je hebt immers al verschillende keren de theaterzaal de rug toegekeerd, om in de stad een idee te ontwikkelen.

Ik engageer me in de stad voornamelijk als burger – niet enkel als kunstenaar. Voor mij bestaat die stad uit openbare voorzieningen, van park tot theater. Vaak bestaat de neiging om het ‘binnen’ en ‘buiten’ van een theaterzaal als tegenstellingen te zien. Maar ik zie ze allebei als publieke ruimtes, met elk zijn eigenheden, zijn voor- en nadelen. Afhankelijk van het project beweeg ik langs die as van binnen en buiten. Binnen heb je een focus en een enorm mooie machinerie om dingen te verbeelden, om een gevoel van ‘samen’ te creëren. Buiten is het chaotischer en is aandacht veel minder vanzelfsprekend.

Ik heb lang nagedacht over de black box als de negatieve ruimte van diegene rondom het theater. Zo spreekt de Duits-Koreaanse filosoof Byung-Chul Han over de ‘overpositivering’ en privatisering van de stad.

Binnen Brussel is dat momenteel nog minder extreem, maar in een stad als Amsterdam bepaalt de aanwezigheid van toeristen de volledige ontwikkeling van de binnenstad. Waar vindt in zo’n context de publieke discussie nog plaats? Theaterhuizen staan idealiter los van die overpositivering, het zijn zwarte dozen voor verbeelding of het delen van ideeën, als negatief van de ruimte rondom het theater. Als plekken voor publieke discussie.

Theater als ruimte voor het denken en ontwikkelen van andere discours, is iets waar ik intens mee bezig ben. We leven in een bizarre tijd die ons confronteert met een overvloed aan stupiditeit. Bijvoorbeeld: de grootste clown schopt het tot president. Hoe kunnen we het denken terug op de voorgrond plaatsen? Ik zie daarin een interessante rol weggelegd voor kunst.

Depuis la fin de ses études à PARTS, Michiel Vandevelde est actif en tant que chorégraphe, commissaire d’exposition et auteur. Le fil rouge à travers son œuvre est le militantisme politique et artistique. Au lieu d’attendre que tout aille mieux, il plaide pour une reprise en main active des choses. « Je suis convaincu qu’au bout du compte, chaque génération finit par créer ses propres institutions. » Vous entretenez différents rapports avec le champ culturel : vous créez des spectacles, vous êtes co-programmateur du festival Bâtard, entre autres, vous faites partie de la rédaction de la revue Etcetera et rédigez des articles. Quel est le lien entre toutes ces activités ?

Elles sont à tous égards liées les unes aux autres. Peut-être que ma pratique se définit comme de la programmation : je travaille toujours avec le matériau des autres que je m’approprie. Cela mène à de nouvelles compositions qui me permettent de transmettre quelque chose de nouveau – aussi bien à travers mes productions de danse et de théâtre que l’écriture et la programmation. Je me sers du principe de « cannibalisme » que j’emprunte à l’écrivain brésilien Oswalde de Andrade, qui l’envisage de façon métaphorique, comme l’absorption d’une culture invasive ou hégémonique pour la ensuite la digérer et l’évacuer sous une autre forme. Bien que la société occidentale ne m’ait pas colonisé, je n’y souscris pas. Qu’est-ce que je considère comme invasif dans ma vie, ou – plus largement – dans la société ? Indépendamment de cela, une discipline peut aussi être une source d’inspiration pour une autre discipline. Pour vous, la ville est une structure qui permet le développement d’un système alternatif pour les arts.

Cherchez-vous aussi un engagement actif dans la ville ? Car vous avez à plusieurs reprises tourné le dos à la salle de théâtre pour développer une idée dans la cité.

Dans la ville, je m’engage principalement en tant que citoyen – pas seulement en tant qu’artiste. Pour moi, cette ville se compose d’aménagements publics allant du parc au théâtre. On a souvent tendance à voir « l’intérieur » et « l’extérieur » du théâtre comme des pôles opposés. Moi, je les considère tous deux comme des espaces publics, avec chacun leurs particularités, leurs avantages et leurs désavantages. En fonction du projet, je me déplace le long de cet axe allant de l’intérieur à l’extérieur. À l’intérieur, on dispose d’une attention et d’une formidable machinerie pour représenter des choses, pour générer un sentiment « d’être ensemble ». À l’extérieur, tout est plus chaotique et l’attention est beaucoup moins évidente.

J’ai longtemps réfléchi à la « boîte noire » comme le négatif de l’espace autour du théâtre. Ainsi, le philosophe germano-coréen Byung-Chul Han parle de la « surpositivation » et de la privatisation de la ville.

Au centre de Bruxelles, c’est moins extrême pour le moment, mais dans une ville comme Amsterdam, la présence des touristes détermine entièrement le développement du centre-ville. Dans un tel contexte, où peut encore avoir lieu la discussion publique ? Idéalement, les théâtres devraient être totalement détachés de cette surpositivation, ce sont des boîtes noires pour l’imaginaire et le partage d’idées, qui font office de négatif de l’espace qui les entoure, de lieux de discussion publique.

Le théâtre en tant qu’espace de la pensée et de l’élaboration d’un discours différent me préoccupe intensément. Nous vivons une époque étrange et faisons face à une profusion de stupidité, comme celle du plus grand bouffon qui parvient à se faire élire président. Comment pouvons-nous ramener la pensée au premier plan ? J’y vois un rôle intéressant réservé à l’art.

You relate to the cultural landscape in various ways: you make productions, co-curate the Bâtard Festival among other things, are on the editorial board of Etcetera, and write articles. How do all these things relate?

It is not fragmented. You might even describe my practice as curatorial: I always use other people’s materials that I re-appropriate. This results in new compositions through which I tell a new story, and that is true in my dance and theatre work, as well as in my writing and curating. I use the principle of ‘cannibalism’, which I borrowed from Brazilian author Oswalde de Andrade. He conceives of cannibalism metaphorically, as the consumption of an invasive and hegemonic culture, which is then digested and secreted in a different form. Although Western society does not colonize me, I do not agree with it. What do I consider to be invasive in my life or – more broadly – in society? But even separated from that question, one discipline can inspire the other. When I started rehearsing for Antithesis, the future of the image (2015), I wrote a lot. The texts were eventually published in a magazine. At the same time, those texts resulted in the production.

For you, the city is a structure in which such an alternative system can be developed for the arts. Do you also look for active involvement with the city itself? You have turned away from the theatre hall several times, to develop an idea in the city.

My engagement with the city is primarily as a resident – not only as an artist. For me, the city consists of public facilities, from parks to theatres. There is often a tendency to see the ‘inside’ and ‘outside’ of a theatre as opposed. But I consider them both as public spaces, each with their own characteristics, their own advantages and disadvantages. Depending on the project, I move along that axis of inside or outside. Inside, you have focus and great performance machinery to create a feeling of ‘togetherness’. Outside, it is more chaotic, and attention is far less self-evident.

For a long time, I thought about the black box as the negative space of what is outside the theatre. That is how the German-Korean philosopher Byung-Chul Han talks about the ‘over-positivizing’ and privatization of the city. That has not yet reached an extreme in Brussels, but in a city like Amsterdam, the presence of tourists totally determines the development of the city centre. Where does public debate still occur in a context like that? Theatres are ideally disconnected from that over-positivizing, they are black boxes for the representation or the sharing of ideas, as negative of the space around the theatre. As spaces for public discussions.

Theatre as a space for reflecting on and developing different discourses is something that I work on intensively. We are living in a bizarre age that confronts us with an excess of stupidity. For example, the biggest clown is elected president. How can we put thought back on the foreground? I see an interesting role for art in that process.

Benjamin Vandewalle studeerde in 2006 af aan PARTS. In zijn werk onderzoekt hij de perceptie van ruimte en beweging in verschillende contexten, zowel in de theaterzaal als op locatie.

In de publieke ruimte onderzoek je de mogelijkheden van een stadschoreograaf. Hoe vul je dit idee in?

Naar een theater gaan is een bewust keuze, waar je je op voorbereidt. Met kunst in de publieke ruimte gaat dat niet. De kijkdozen van Interview zien er bijvoorbeeld heel onschuldig uit, maar de ervaring ervan – die onverwacht is – kan hard toeslaan. Onder de zelfgekozen naam van stadschoreograaf ben ik vooral aan het werk met wat ik voorlopig de Kunstkermis noem. Het is een ontwikkelingsparcours doorheen de stad met verschillende kleine presentatiemomenten. Het einddoel is een reeks installaties en interventies zoals Interview en Birdwatching 4x4, over enkele maanden heen. Zo wil ik onderzoeken wat het betekent om langdurig in de publieke ruimte aanwezig te zijn, en een relatie op te bouwen met de omgeving. Zoals bepaalde daklozen die haast iedereen kent en de identiteit van de stad meebepalen, wil ik ook deel worden van het straatbeeld.

Eigenlijk wil ik kunst verweven met het dagelijkse leven. Dat begint met het in kaart brengen van wat er allemaal beweegt. De beweging tussen mensen, beweging van mensen binnen hun leefwereld, of de beweging op zichzelf. Een goed voorbeeld is Tracking Traces dat ik uitprobeerde voor het Performing Spaceplatform in Maastricht. Drie dagen lang achtervolgde ik mensen met een groot stuk krijt. Je kreeg op een mooie manier te zien hoe ze zich bewogen in de publieke ruimte. De lijnen en tekeningen breidden zich ver uit in de stad. Soms kwamen er nieuwsgierigen toe op het plein, omdat ze een lijn hadden gezien en die waren blijven volgen. Door dit netwerk van passanten te ‘onderlijnen’ is de passage plots niet meer iets vluchtig – en lokt zelfs de beweging uit van anderen.

Waarom ben je ingegaan op de residentievraag van het Kaaitheater – en wat zijn je verwachtingen?

Ik weet dat ik het beste functioneer als er enige continuïteit is, maar als kunstenaar zijn relaties met huizen en instellingen erg precair. Als een programmator waar je een goede band mee had het huis verlaat, ben je zelf ook voor een stuk de binding met dat huis kwijt. Deel gaan uitmaken van een huis en zijn gemeenschap, waarin je iedereen beter leert kennen, is dus echt betekenisvol.

Die residentie is vooral een hulp om mijn werk vloeiender te laten verlopen. Om in een lange adem aan een project te kunnen werken, wat ik bijvoorbeeld nodig heb voor de Kunstkermis. Daarnaast wil ik teruggaan naar de performer in mij, die soms verstopt geraakt door te werken in de publieke ruimte. Soms heb ik heb het gevoel louter ten diensten te staan van mijn werk. De residentie is dus een kans om opnieuw te gaan experimenteren. De mogelijkheid bestaat om naar de Kaaistudio’s te komen, aan dingen te werken en die te tonen zonder dat het meteen in een programma moet staan. Pas achteraf besefte ik wat de grootste luxe van PARTS was: je kan falen, zelfs heel zwaar falen. Als het maken plots je broodwinning wordt, ga je veel minder risico nemen. En daar zit de paradox, want ik heb ondertussen ook geleerd dat goed werk maken betekent: veel risico’s nemen. Waar er bij mijn ‘minder goede’ voorstellingen teveel controle zat door het op voorhand bedachte recept, ontstaan mijn beste werken wanneer ik empty-handed de studio binnenkom en vanuit een aantal losse ideeën begin te creëren. Tot er plots iets uitkomt dat ik niet zomaar had kunnen bedenken.

Benjamin Vandewalle a achevé ses études à PARTS en 2006. Son œuvre étudie la perception de l’espace et du mouvement dans des contextes différents, autant dans la salle de théâtre que hors les murs. « Tout comme certains sans-abri que quasi tout le monde connaît et qui contribuent à déterminer l’identité de la ville, je veux également faire partie de l’image de la rue. » Dans l’espace public, on analyse les possibilités d’un chorégraphe urbain. Comment concrétisez-vous cette idée ?

Aller au théâtre est un choix délibéré, auquel on se prépare. Il n’en va pas de même avec l’art dans l’espace public. Les boîtes à images d’Interview paraissent très anodines, par exemple, mais en faire l’expérience – qui est inattendue – peut avoir un effet considérable. En tant que chorégraphe urbain, une dénomination que j’ai moi-même choisie, je travaille surtout sur ce que j’appelle en ce moment Kermesse de l’art (Kunstkermis). Il s’agit d’un parcours de développement à travers la ville avec différents petits moments de présentation publique. La finalité est une série d’installations et d’interventions, à l’instar d’Interview et de Birdwatching 4x4, étalées sur une période de quelques mois. Ainsi, je souhaite analyser ce que signifie être durablement présent dans l’espace public et établir une relation avec l’environnement. Tout comme certains sans-abri que quasi tout le monde connaît et qui contribuent à déterminer l’identité de la ville, je veux également faire partie de l’image de la rue. À vrai dire, je veux mêler l’art à la vie quotidienne. Cela commence par un tour d’horizon de tout ce qui bouge. Le mouvement entre les gens, le mouvement des gens au sein de leur milieu ou le mouvement en soi. Un bon exemple est Tracking Traces que j’ai éprouvé dans le cadre de Performing Space-platform à Maastricht. Trois jours durant, j’ai poursuivi des gens avec un grand bout de craie. Cela a donné lieu à un bel aperçu de la manière dont les gens se meuvent dans l’espace public. Les lignes et les dessins s’étendaient

jusqu’aux confins de la ville. Parfois, des badauds s’approchaient de la place parce qu’ils avaient continué à suivre une ligne qu’ils avaient aperçue. En « soulignant » ce réseau de passants, le passage n’est soudain plus quelque chose de fugace, et incite même le mouvement des autres.

Pourquoi avez-vous accepté une résidence au Kaaitheater et quelles sont vos attentes ?

Je sais que je fonctionne au mieux quand il y a une certaine continuité, mais en tant qu’artiste, les relations avec les maisons et les institutions sont très précaires. Quand un programmateur avec lequel on entretient de bonnes relations quitte l’institution, on perd en partie le lien avec cette maison. Faire partie d’une maison et de sa communauté et y approfondir ses liens avec tout le monde est donc véritablement significatif pour un artiste.

Pour moi, cette résidence est avant tout un moyen d’effectuer mon travail avec plus de fluidité, de pouvoir travailler de manière continue à un projet de longue haleine, comme Kunstkermis. Par ailleurs, je souhaite revenir au performeur en moi que j’ai parfois perdu de vue en travaillant dans l’espace public. Il m’arrive d’avoir le sentiment d’être uniquement au service de mon travail. La résidence est donc pour moi une occasion d’à nouveau pouvoir expérimenter. J’ai la possibilité de travailler aux Kaaistudio’s et d’y montrer ce que je fais sans que cela doive pour autant figurer au programme. Ce n’est qu’après coup que je me suis rendu compte de ce qu’était le plus grand luxe à P.A.R.T.S. : on a droit à l’échec, même à un échec cuisant.

Aussitôt que la création devient son gagne-pain, on prend nettement moins de risque. Et c’est là que réside le paradoxe, car j’ai entre-temps appris que pour fournir du bon travail, il faut prendre beaucoup de risques. Là où mes « moins bonnes » productions étaient trop contrôlées, à cause d’une recette imaginée au préalable, mes meilleures pièces ont été réalisées quand je suis entré au studio « les mains vides » et que j’ai commencé à créer à partir de certaines idées sans liens particuliers entre elles. Jusqu’à ce que soudain, quelque chose émerge qui, autrement, ne m’aurait pas effleuré l’esprit.

Benjamin Vandewalle graduated from PARTS in 2006. In his work he explores the perception of space and movement in a variety of contexts, both in the theatre and on location.

You explore the possibilities of a city choreographer in public space. How do you give this idea content?

Going to the theatre is a conscious choice that you prepare for. That is not possible with art in the public space. For example, the view-boxes in Interview look perfectly innocent, but the experience – which is unexpected – can hit you very hard. As a self-titled city choreographer, I am particularly active in what I am provisionally calling the Art Carnival. It is a developmental tour throughout the city with various small performance moments. The end goal is a series of installations and interventions such as Interview and Birdwatching 4x4, which take place over several months. The aim is to investigate the significance of being present in the public space over a long period of time, and to develop a relationship with the environment. In the same way that certain homeless people know everybody and co-determine the identity of the city, I also aim to become part of the cityscape.

I would actually like to interweave art with everyday life. That starts with mapping everything that’s going on. The movement between people, the movement of people within their world, or movement as such.

One good example is Tracking Traces, which I tried for the Performing Space platform in Maastricht. For three days, I followed people with a large piece of chalk. The result was a beautiful sketch of how they move in the public space. The lines and drawings expanded right across the city. Curious people would sometimes come to the square because they had seen a line and wanted to keep following it. By ‘underlining’ this network of passers-by, passing by itself is no longer fleeting – and even stimulates the movement of others.

Why did you respond to the residence offer of the Kaaitheater – and what are your expectations?

I know that I function best when there is a certain continuity, but as an artist, relationships with cultural centres and institutions are very precarious. If a programme director with whom you have a good relationship leaves the centre, you lose part of your connection with the centre. It is thus very meaningful to be part of a centre and its community so that you get to know everybody better.

The residence is especially helpful to make my artistic practice smoother; it helps to be able to work on a project over a longer period, which I need for the Art Carnival. I would also like to revisit the performer in me, who sometimes gets buried under the works in the public space. I sometimes feel as though I am merely at the service of my work. The residence is an opportunity to experiment again. There is a chance of coming to the Kaaistudios, to work on things and to present them without them necessarily having to be programmed. It was only afterwards that I realized the enormous luxury of PARTS: you can fail, even very badly. When creation suddenly becomes your livelihood, you take far fewer risks. And therein lies the paradox because I have learned that making good work implies taking a lot of risks. Where there was too much control in my ‘lesser’ productions because of the preconceived recipe, my best works happen when I come into the studio empty-handed and start creating based on a number of disparate ideas. Until something emerges that I could not just have devised.

Inspired by an old map of the Middle East, the Dictaphone Group explored the now unused rail network in current Lebanon.

In this video installation, they look for the meaning of Lebanese borders, and of borders in the Arab world.

In 2012 bezochten Karthik Pandian en Andros Zins-Browne de Atlas Film Studios in Marokko, voor het videoproject Atlas/Inserts.

Ze huurden er een groep kamelen die ze probeerden te laten dansen tussen de oude filmdecors. Met Atlas Revisited blikken de kunstenaars terug op deze zoektocht naar een beeld van de vrijheid – met gloednieuw videomateriaal, deze keer op scène.

In 2012, Karthik Pandian and Andros ZinsBrowne visited the Atlas Film Studios in Morocco for the video project Atlas/Inserts.

They rented a herd of camels that they tried to make dance among the old film sets. In Atlas Revisited, the artists reflect on this search for an image of freedom – with brand-new video footage, but on stage this time.
