As an outgrowth of thei1· i11te1·est in D1·amatics the Senio1·s are adding a play to the list of Commencement week.

The play selected, ''The New P-0or," is a modern comedy by Cosmo Hamilton. In the t1niqt1e plot a mode1n rich family is left to face a se1·­ vant-less st1mmer whe11 the cor·ps ,of servants 1·efuse to remain at the coun­ try home. The eldest dat1ghte1� 1;0escues the family from desp�ir by secu1·­ jng a bt1tle1·, a footman, a chauffeu1· and a maid throt1gh a curious adver­ tisement in the pape1�. The consternation of the fa1nily is inc1·eased when it is discove1·ed that the ne"v servants a1·e of the Russian nobility. With plenty of action, mysteJ·y and 1·omance, the plot develops to a satisfac­ to1·y close.

With the cast chosen and 1·ehea1·sals under way, the play is gradually taking fo1·m. Under the very competent di1·ection of Miss Spellman, it is assured of a successft1l perf 01·mance.

It was in the days of Pigtails. On the g·1·ounds st11--r·o-µnding· a small g1·ay bt1ilding stood the owne1· of a choice pair adorned with eno1,.mous blue 1ibbons. The g1·ay bt1ilding p11•oved to be tl1e only school house Cla1·kdale cot1ld boast of in 1914. The possesso1-­ of the Pigtails seemed to be Do1·is ·who was only that day ente1·ing the thi11d g1--ade to begin l1er caree1'" in the schoois of Cla1·kdale. Beth can1e down f1·om Jerome to join '24 in in the fou1th g1·ade. Pat1l, deciding that he would like a warme1· climate, also came f1·om Jerome. That year we found 1·ef uge in what is now the Tailo1· Shop until the p1·esent school quilding was com­ pleted. Afte1· Ch1·ist­ mas vi.re 1noved in, --' feeling that at last ) [).;, we had a pe1manent home. In the fifth grade Ina, Friday and Beelie join­ ed the class of the faithft1l. Ina came from Cottonwood and neve1· missed a day although she did travel in a Ford. \>aul �ith ''Friday'' then ceased to b e a day of the week to the inhabitants of Clark­ dale and became instead ''the boy at the · Meat Market.'' We moved again to be sixth graders in one of the ''shacks." The ''flu'' was the only thing that came t-0 Clarkdal� · during our seventh gi1ade existence. After --· that we migrated again to the new grammar building and there we stayed t1ntil -- ---· -- --·- -- school eighth grade graduation. Edna, Catherine, -- - -· - - Bill Flynn and Frank came the next year to - march with the � - r a n k s of the • ''Green.''

They were from Clem-enceau but as a high school did not happen in that vicinity they were compelled to come to C. H. S. for their higher education. In Sep­ tember, the boys in short trousers and the girls in knee length dresses were initiated into the mysteries of high sch�ol at the Freshman re­ ception. Our Sophomore year passed without

any noticeable changes. Bessie Lee joined us from Oak C1·eek. One thing, however, we mt1st not forget to mention is that as a result of a Sophomore 1s with an Illinois postmark. Septem­ ving lette1 romance Beth is still 1·ecef be1·, 1922, we 1·ett1rned to the at1dito1-ium as J t1niors. Anna Lot1 and Eva came from the valley to enter ou1· class. Ray came f1·om Cam1J Ve1'"de with his saxophone and late1· in the yea1· Joseph Bake1· appea1·ed fi·om Cotton­ wood. We were left or1)ha11s by the resignation •of Miss Ba.1·ke1·, ot111 class sponso1·, bt1t Ma1·y King had joined the teach­ ing staff of C. I-I. S., and we found he1· willing to share ot1r joys and ti·ou7301, bles. (Note: We hope Miss King· doesn't feel we have n1ostly ''tr·oubles.'') But we v\'e1·e 11ot always as fortt1nate. Early one mo1-ning, "' befo1·e Ch1·ist1nas, vve awol<e to the tt1ne of the fi1 e v\'histle. It did not take us long to lea1'Il that the 1? · .., aL1ditorit1111 was bt1rning. We saved otrr books, but had to room in c1·owded qt1a1·ters ,until a new at1dito1-ium co11ld be bt1ilt. The opening of this new place was cele­ b1·ated by the Jt1nior Prom. Fo1· weeks befo1·e this we ct1t ou1· yellow butteI·flies ( even in ou1-- sleep) until ''bt1t­ te1i1y'' beca1ne the most des1Jised wo1·d in the Junio1· vocabt1la1·y. Nevertheless both the P1·om and the ban­ quet were ht1ge st1ccesses in the his­ to1·y of '24. With no additions to ot1r class we began ot1r l o n g anticipated senior year.

The bt1siest people in the world do not have time to make a noise, and we have certainly been the ''busiest . I people in the world." However, we did take ''time out'' to give a Senio1· Hop at Easter. Amid the myriads of green and gold balloons that ht1ng from the lights of the at1ditorium the stu­ dents of the high sch,ool enjoyed the last hospitalities of '24. And now it is in the days of ''Bobs'' and Pigtails have vanished into the dim past. As ot1r vision of diplomas and the 1924 Alchemist a1·e fast becoming a 1..eality we know that these years spent in Clarkdale we1·e the happiest of our �.�

But when the book is finished And many a year 1·olled by, Now isn't that the book you want To 1·emember Clarkdale High?

And isn't that the way eve1·y one ,of us feels? Of course ''it'' was lots of \1/0l"k. But that is what makes ''it'' valuable. How satisfied we will feel when vve pick ''it'' t1p fo1-- the first time and know that at least one of ot1r labors have borne frt1it.

And then, too, when we are old and g,:·ay and C. H. S. seems only a memory, if we can pick ''it'' tll) and glance thro11gh it, how those days will live again. ''It'' will bring to others, who have never heard of our school, the very soul of it, fo1-- that is what this is. ''It'' will b1ing to them the foot­ ball a11d basl<etball games that have been played, the work that has been done, the people who make up the school and even th.e school itself.

Of cot1rse, we all know, now, what the ''it'' is that is being described. ''It'' is the 1924 Alchemist finished and 1·eady to be read by the world.

THE FATE OF SODIUM AND PHOSPHATE

Sodium and Phosphate were great friends of the Whi�e Caps. �hey all journeyed across the plains to the Golden West and pitched then- tents facing each other.

The White Caps were thrifty and very unselfish. They sought favors from the Gods of the West that they might overcome all difficulties and develop into real service to lighten the lives of others. They grew in mag­ nificence until they gained the favor and were given the title of "Th<!

White Cap Gods" by the Gods of the West.

Sodium and Phosphate had no ideals and were easily discouraged and cared little for the happiness of others. They had one daughter, Lolomai whom they both worshipped but exhibited no special care in food and ex­ ercise and she began to decline in health and in a few months died. Being very jealous of the White Caps, Sodium and Phosphate began to accuse the Gods of causing their HI luck, and decided to move their tent farther south.

To prove that it was not true about the fate of Lolomai, the White Caps built a beautiful park around the old camping grounds of Sodium and Phosphate, and named this beautTful spot "Lolomai Lodge."

When Sodium and Phosphate started on their joumey, White Caps promised them that they would aid them once, and only once on their journey. Sodium and Phosphate started on their joumey toward the South, but soon came to a stream which they realized at first sight that they could not cross. They knew not what to do, for they had no boats nor anything to aid them in crossing the river. They finally decided to turn to the White Caps for aid. The White Caps were very willing to grant this favor but reminded their two friends that th·ey were not to look back at the White Caps again ; if they did look back something terrible would happen.

After promising never to look back Sodium and Phosphate walked across the river.

They traveled for a long distance without turning back to view the beautiful scenery they had left behind, until suddenly they saw confront­ ing them a very high, very steep range of mountains. Their hopes were dashed _to pieces, for how were they to climb to the highest peaks of the mountams? They were very down-hearted and tired by this time and decided to give up in despair. So, foi:getting God White Cap's warning, looked back and turned into a mountain of Sodium and Phosphate.

For many years this Mount was in the Background but lately it has been brought into the lime-light and is today the fam�us Sodium-Phos­ phate min_e outside o f the little town of Camp Verde. While the White Caps, or 'Frisco Peaks as some people call them, still look down on the camping grounds of their old friends.

Father was standing by me. His face was vvhite and the1·e were blaclc sto1·m cl-0t1ds in his eyes. I'm rathe1· tall, bt1t when he put his aim on 1ny shoL1lder in that ''I'm de1)ending· on yo11'' way of his, I felt myself g·row a few incl1es. . He was st1ch a. sweet little ldd. And I sta1·ted out fo1· that negro. But Mrs. Lenior stopped me. ''Je1·1·y," she said, and she was c1·ying p1·etty hard, ''I saw it all. B11t yot1 mustn't do anything about it. You see, they'd only ht11-t tts wo1·st if yot1 did.'' I was shal<:ing but she picked up poo1· little Jimmy and gave · him to me. ''Please, Jer1·y," was all she said.

But she won. I carried Jimmy into the house, and p1·etty soon we brought him to. He was b1·uised and sore, and when he opened his eyes, Mrs. Lenior broke down, and c1·ied, and he did, too. \Vhat could I do? Ex­ cept to get m o• re ft1rious every minute?

That night a new 1·ec1·uit 1·ode out in the unifor1n of the K. K. K., white-hot ange1· 11nder the concealing robe. A nd my fi1·st pleasure since I'd come home was the whipping of that negro until the whip and my a im both wore out. Do .vou blame me?

Master William Cunningham Root Was the proud possessor of a new serge suit For graduation was draw�ng nigh And William was graduatmg from Bumbleton High.

His mother had laid it away with care, Saying, "William, you mustn't dare To wear your lovely new suit, my dear, 'Till graduation time is here."

Now William was good and he meant to obey But after he came from school the next day A letter addressed to him lay at his plate Inviting him to a party, Saturday, at eight.

Isobel Martin the hostess would be, Much love and admiration for Isobel had he.

And Isobel like William, but goodness knows, She already had plenty of eligible beaux.

The night for the party dawned clear with a moon, But William was sullen and sad as a tomb.

For his old suit was shabby, he had nothing to wear, So he donned his new suit that was hanging there.

Soon the party was over and Isobel knew That she liked William best in his suit of blue, But poor William went home trembling with fear For on the blue coat was a long, ragged tear.

On the gate there had been a long-pointed nail, And had caught in his new graduation coat tail.

The new suit was ruined beyond the least doubt, But this one fact Mother never found out.

Then came to Bumbleton the day of graduation For Mr. Root wsa one of agitation, For just as he was carefully dressing He found that his best suit was missing.

"Hey, Mother, where'd my new suit go?

I can't find the darn thing high nor low! �- Root searched then with troubled face ·a to him, "I can't find it any place." er attired in his every day suit •e grad uation of the Junior R�t almost a state of chilled com� illiam rise to receive his diploma.

1-Half a score and eight years ago th� re was dep�sited upon this earth another Abraham Lincoln known as Bill Flynn, with a stately, manly, comely young figure, acc�mpanied by h_is voice, that when h�ard would deafen the ears of stone. He has attamed what has been his greatest desire--to be·a star debater of C.H . S. 2--Many years ago an ill wind blew into C.H. S. Paul � osenburger, and his profile; he is manly, powerful and stately. He looked hke one of Crom­ well's Ironsides, very sincerely.

3--In the senior class there is a maiden-Edith Perry-whose greatest ambition was to be a man-hater and she says that no one or nobody can keep her from it except one. ( ?)

4-A quiet, quaint, Quaker maiden, ·Eva Girdner, destined to be a future art teacher. When a small girl her one ambition was to rule with an iron hand, and from observations, she probably will.

5--Take some demureness, coyness (a real original brand), obedience, much generous youth in all charms thereof-have .the result, Ray Allen. &-Doris Wade's great aim in life is to be a second Theda Bara. All through the day she stands before the mirror, rolling her eyes, then she turns to her little sister and says, "Irene, don't I look like Theda, now?"

7-Elmo Womack is like the eternal maxim, "Still waters run deep."

He has nothing to say but is the brains of the class. ( ?)

S--The Seniors possess to their joy a natural born Paderewski; Beth Reese. She can tickle the ivory like no one else, and she is the only one who knows what she is playing.

9-Very young, absurd, but just the same very matter of fact, is Frank.

One great thing he has obtained is to be the professional drummer of C.H. S. 10-Edna Wilson, the girl that the boys all admire and like because of her wonderful brown hair, mischievous dimple and winning smile, wishes to be the world's typing champ.

11-Robert Baker had one ambition-but his aim fell since the U. S. went dry. He went to the navy to be a professional boolegger but has changed greatly since he has come back to C.H. S. 12-In this class there is a very sweet girl-Ina Willard. We all know that she wishes to be a clever comedienne. . 13--Augustine Martinez (Friday} is a very bright student. In all his high school years he has been a good athlete. He thinks of nothing but keeping his curly, black hair in that wonderful pompadour.

14--lt's hard� make a booster f�r C.H . S. out of a •full-fledged rooter for C. H. S., but it has been accomplished. Behold, Anna Lou !

15--Bill Bergm�, <Jr in other w.9rds �eelie," is beloved by everyone be­ cause of the attention he pays to Athletics. TEARS The little spring that rippled over the stones back of the scp.ool house was swollen. A tiny, glistening drop whispered to its neighbor. ''Where did you come from and how did you get here?'' ''Why I am one of the tea1·s that Patricia shed when Johnny broke his arm," said the other little drop. ''It was really pitiful to see. She was quite br-okenhearted over Johnny being hu1't, and besides it was his right aim and that was the one he always put around her. So that is what made the brook overflow.'' ''Oh, no, that isn't what makes the stream so large,'' replied the first little drop. ''Just yesterday they had a fight. About noon Pat1icia came down to the bank of this little stream and wept most sadly. There threat­ ened to be a flood then, but it wasn't .until Johnny stopped the truck at 3 :30 and came down here crying bitterly, that the neighbors began' to move out, fearing their houses would be washed away.''

So the two little glistening drops went on down to the Verde river.

The Dramatic Clt1b, t111de1· the supe1·vision of Miss Spellman is now in the third yea1· of its existence. Ve1·y little was done the first semester, bt1t the club is now ft1lly 01·ganized once more.

At the mee·tings, which ar·e held eve1·y other F1·iday from eleven­ thirty t1ntil tv,,elve, short plays a1·e 1�ead and the lives -of their authors dis­ c11ssed. A complete disct1ssion of tlie history of the d1·ama has also been a featt1re of these meetings. In this way eve1·yone has a chance to take part in the clt1b without actually being- in the plays.

It was decided by the old members of the club, that anyone desiring to bec,o•me a memb �r shot1ld show thei1· interest and ability in inte11>1·eting drama by tal<ing a part in a play. Seve1·al one-act plays were given for the Dramatic Clt1b as a 1·es11lt of this decision. '' A11d the Lamp Went Out,'' a ve1-y clever pantomime, was given for the High School Forum on April 23. '' 'Op o' My Thumb'' was f eatured at the Glee Clt1b concert.

We all know that there is not a person who does not take an interest in Dramatics and we have every reason ta expect that thi.s Club will con­ tinue to be a success.

As we are now allowed the time from eleven-thirty until twelve at noon, in which to meet, a number of girls have been enabled to join the Glee Club.

With an average attendance of twenty-seven Miss Hickman has m ade a girls' chorus of which the High School is very proud.

The Girls' Glee Club, the Boys' Glee Club, the Orchestra and the Dra­ matic Club gave a most interesting program for the public on the evening of May fourteenth. The following week the same program was given at Whipple Barracks to entertain the sick soldiers.

THE DEBATE CLUB In the second year of its existence the Debate Club has again proved itself worthy of C. H. S. By the decision of the faculty, Betty Chism and Bill Flynn were chosen to lead the High School to success in debating the subject: "Re­ solved: That the Presidential Candidate of Each Political Party Should be Chosen by a Nation-wide Direct Primary."

The first debate was held at Clarkdale against the Jerome team.

Betty's good placing of her points and Bill's decisive manner easily won for us this debate. We were not so successful against Prescott, but our team ran such a close race with their opponents that we have no cause for regret.

Bill Flynn will leave C. H. S. this year so he will not be able to debate for Clarkdale again. He has always held up his half of the bargain and the Debate Club will certainly miss him but we have a very good member to take his place. Emestine Evans served as alternate this year and we feel sure that she will be able to help C. H. S. win all of the debates that she takes part in next year.

"LA TERTULIA" "La Tertulia" was organized in 1922 under the supervision of Miss King. The first year found only a few members in the club. No one can become a member unless they have had at least one year of Spanish.

The purpose of the club is to enable the students taking Spanish to become better acquainted with Spanish customs and to learn to apply what they learn in th� gram�ar. �v.erythi�g said at the meetings of the club must be spoken m Spamsh, a fme bemg enacted for every English word spoken.

At the regular meetings Spanish programs are given One of the best of these, "El Gitano," was given before the Forum.

Even if Miss Hickman had to make an orchestra out of an unlucky number of players, thirteen, she certainly made a good one. And to prove it they performed in a most pleasing way at the joint Glee Club and Or­ chestra Concert.

THE "C" CLUB We have not heard much of the "C" Club this year but from the var­ ious meetings they have had during the year we know that they are still functioning.

During the Christmas vacation, wh�n a!l of the Alumni members were �t home, a party was given at th� Aud1to�um for the purpose of initiat­ mg four new members who had gamed admittance by their football record.

FOO''fBALL SEASON School had 11,ot bee11 open t,vo days befo1·e the athletes and all other st11dents desiring to be ma1·1·ed tip, came 011t to the first installment of football f01· 1923. Most of the 1·ec1·uits ,,,e1·e g1·een, neve1· having played before, but they soon g·ot ove1· that, fo1· they came ot1t expecting ha1·d ,vork an� training·. With the help •of the olde1" playe1·s and McB1·ide, they st11'"ely got it, too. In the fi1·st \.veek of p1·actice we lost a very g ood playe1· one that we l1ad depended on ve1·y heavily the past t\\ 10 yea1"s,-J ess Daven'po1-t.

Our first game was scheduled with the N01·the1·n At"izona Noi·mal School. We st111)1·ised ot11·selves and all ou1· f1·iends by beating them. Qu i· coach, ever v\,atchft1l, saw the makings of a good team and d1'illed us more than ever. With his help '"'e went th1·ough the season ,vithout be ing de­ feated.

Line-up Bill Bergman-"Beelie" has played center, half-back and full-back re­ spectively. He is a good man at defense as well as at offense. He was captain of the team this year.

Bill Black-Bill has played the position as half-back for the last three years. He is very fast and hard at tackling. He probably is the best man on the team in drop kicking. Bill will be very valuable for the team next

year.

Bm Haskins-The first year Haskins played tackle, and the next year he was not able to play because of a broken wrist. He is fast and a very sure tackler and we know that he is a necessary factor to the '24 team.

Augustine Martinez-The Northern Arizona quarter-back played end two years and then quarter-back his last year. He handles the ball like a flash. ¡Eugene Coleman-"Gene" played center and is a very valuable asset to the team. He was very accurate in passing the ball.

Lynn Pace-This was Lynn's first year at playing football. Being one of our heaviest men he played guard and some of the best players have failed to dodge him.

Elmo Womack-"Onions" by his sterling defense on the line made it possible for our "Backs" to make many yards every time.

Adolph Orantio-Jaek, witli his two years of experience was found to be a valuable man on the team. Played tackle, guard and half-back.

Earl Garrison-One of the smallest men on the team, but always able to hold up his position. He shows the makings of a good end.

Bill Flynn-Bill filled in all the empty places and proved his worth at all times.

Frank Spoone1·-Though he wasn't given much of a chance to show his skill we all know tha.t he had it.

Games After playing the Normal, our next opponents proved to be none others than the Je1·omites. We ran into a ve1·y tough game, but C. H. S. was not to be defeated. Both teams sco1·ed two touchdo,vns, but Bill Black put the ''Pig skin'' over the goal -one time mo1·e than did Je1·ome. This gave the game to us with the score 14 to 13.

Eme1·son and Cla1·kdale battled out for the Championship in one of the fastest games played on Cla1·kdale's field. It was not only fast, but ha1·d. Both teams came close to their goal seve1·al times ,vithout being able to score. Bill Black finally used his booting toe to win the game for us, making the score 7 to 6.

Fo1· the first time since the introduction of football in the Clarkdale high school the team was sent south to Buckeye. Our team went down de­ termined to show the southe1i1 team what good players they had in the north. Putting every effort into running up the score the Smelterites came home victorious, having defeated the Buckeye team 36 to 6.

On Thanksgiving day the Jerome and Clarkdale teams clashed again.

0,ur team was very badly crippled, but they gathered up spirit and deter­ mination to win afte1· Bill Black pulled off some particularly spectacular plays. The game ended 25 to O in our favor, not only ending the game, but the season.

BASKETBALL Line-up Augustine Martinez-Captain "Friday" has played forward and guard but his best position is forward. He is very fast and active, and the team could not have done without him.

Bill Black-Though Billie is not very big he certainly fills his position as forward. He can throw a goal from almost any part of the field and the team will value him next year.

Elmo Womack-Elmo plays center because he is so tall. Never mind, he can jump, too. He played the game with the idea of giving his best and always came out on top.

Bill Bergman-If you ever want a guard that is always on the job and never in the wrong place, then come to Bill.

Lynn Pace-A new "star" has been developed in "Big Boy." He plays a very steady game at guarding and his opponents can never find a defect in the territory which he is covering.

Substitutes Frank Spooner-Frank can play either center or guard and he was official "first sub" this year. It is too bad that he will not be here next year for he would surely add a lot to the team.

Bill Haskins-Bill is an all-around good player. He could fill almost any position on the field.

Adolph Orantio-One of the boys that they are depending on next year is Adolph.

GIRLS' BASKETBALL Beth Reese-Running Center (Captain) Ernestine Evans--Jumping Center Martha Mary Davey-Forward Billie Howard-Forward Maudie Richards-Guard Edna Wilson-Guard Beth was one of the hardest playing members on ¡the team and, though she had to do a good deal of jumping to make herself seen, she always managed to get around pretty lively.

Baby Davey is a real forward. This year she changed her position from center to forward. Her ability lies in her lightness of foot.

Ern estine was one of our new players and with the good start she has wiJI be very valuable to the team in the next two years.

Billie found herself at home as forward. She is su1·e of her field goals and has three more years in which to become an expert.
