DEDICATION

Mr. Clarence Beale

The class of 1962 wishes to dedicate this edition of the Mingus Hi-Lo to a courageous and upstanding citizen of the Verde Valley. Not only is he active and interested in community affairs, but also he has proved to us that he is interested in all our activities from the academic to the athletic. We thank him for his help and encourangement since he has been affiliated with our school. We know that he w'ill continue to be a guardian of our student body in the years to come. It is with appreciation and gratitude that we dedicate the 1961 Hi-Lo to Mr. Clarence Beale.

The Student Council has advisory and executive functions. Through it the faculty receives suggestions and recommendations concerning the organization and the general welfare of the Student Body—its traditions, its ideals, and its standards. It has the responsibility of planning and executing a program of student benefits through cooperative effort and action, management of parties and the adoption of regulations concerning student’s behavior and conduct at assemblies, in the halls, at ball games, and in public relations everywhere.

The FFA is an intra-curricular activity having its origin and root in a definite part of the school curriculum—vocational agriculture. Among other things, members learn through active participation how to conduct and take part in a public meeting; to speak in public; to buy and sell cooperatively; to solve their own problems; to finance themselves; and to assume civic responsibility. The foundation upon which the Future Farmers of America organization is built includes leadership and character development, sportsmanship, cooperation, service, thrift, scholarship, improved agriculture, organized recreation, citizenship and patriotism/

F.H.A. is a national organization of students who study homemaking in high schools. Any student who is taking, or has taken, a homemaking course in school may become a member. Their motto, "Toward New Horizons,” reminds F.H.A. members that their present study and contributions toward home life will influence their community and country tomorrow. The F.H.A. is mainly to promote appreciation of the joys and satisfaction of homemaking and to further the interest in Home Economics in personal, family, and community living. 62

"See if I care if you give me a five!"

A tyrannical editor, a benign moderator, work ing sometimes against one another for months; a publisher, resignedly waiting for copy, glossy photos of high-school life—all combine to produce the Hi-Lo, our high school year book.

From all the campus haunts emerge reportersin-embryo with reviews, interviews, and scoops. Into this chaos Gaye Morgan, Editor of the Mingus Spirit, racing against a news-hungry press and a deadline, must bring order. Their success is shown by the monthly struggle for the Mingus Spirit, our widely known school paper.
