In develop­ ing this theme we have tried to show how education helps each person make the most of his talents, seeks to educate all the children and all the people, helps prepare people to earn a good living, prepares individ­ uals to be wise and loyal citizens and recognizes the eternal dignity of hu­ man personality. *

We think that education is the greatest common defense the Ameri­ can people have erected or can erect.

II tf-ittauxUncj, Public, &ducatian The United States Office of Ed­ ucation has estimated that the cost of all schools including the colleges and universities is less than a dime a day for each person of voting age in the nation. When one con­ siders that this money is expended for the education of over 26 mil­ lion pupils enrolled in the public schools, the cost does not seem large.

The source of the money needed to finance education lies, of course, in the taxes paid by the citizens of our country. We are fortunate to live in a country where school

taxes are considered an- invest­ ment in human resources.

Comparative figures show that a great discrepancy exists in dif­ ferent states in the amount of money spent for education. In 1938 there was a range of from $28 per pupil in the state spending the least to $148 in the state spending the most. In this same year Arizona spent an average of $100 per year for each of 20,314 high school pupils. We students in Arizona should appreciate our good fortune when we consider our opportunities.

Forum meetings were presided over

by Russell Jones and Donald Green­ wood, first and second semester stu­ dent body presidents, respectively.

marionette artist, a reader, a deep sea diver, a lecturer on plastics, a world traveler, and a concert by a group of Hawaiian singers.

Student body meetings were nu­ merous and of a varied nature. Be­ sides such regular meetings as pep and honor roll assemblies, a number of educational films on a variety of subjects were shown. The dramatics clubs of both the junior and senior high schools presented assembly pro­ grams.

A Christmas program was given by members of the student body under the direction of Miss Rayle. The story of the Nativity was told through readings and songs which accompa­ nied the showing of large pictures illustrating the Christmas story.

First semester officers were: Rus­ sell Jones, president; Meredyth Wil­ lard, vice-president; Donald Green­ wood, secretary; Bob Beltz, treas­ urer; Dick Mason, custodian of the flag; Milton Lindner, color guard.

Second semester officers were : Don­ ald Greenwood, president; Clyde Wig­ gins, vice-president; Melba Shockley, secretary; Richard Gussman, treas­ urer; Billy Hunter, custodian of the flag; Roy Prather and George Svob, color guards.

On the social side the Forum offi­ cers, with the aid of the senior class, sponsored the Freshman reception, given in September. A special so­ cial hour was given as a benefit for the infantile paralysis drive shortly after the President’s birthday.

Of particular interest were the se­ ries of National Assemblies which in­ cluded talks and demonstrations by a

The loyal citizen ap­ preciate this heritage and seeks to perpetuate it. He shows his gratitude not only with words and symbols but by study and inter­ action.

In all grades the schools seek to help us to be good citizens and to grow steadily in the skills and qualities of effective adult citizen­ ship. We learn to work and play together throughout our educa­ tional careers. i* a a v.

In school we are given opportu­ nities to participate in a wide va­ riety of community civic activities.

Possibilities for shaping public opinion are found in the class­ room, the assembly, personal con­ tacts, and through student govern­ ment.

From the time we enter school, we are confronted with problems of self-discipline. If pupils respect the rights of others they find that school activities, we come to under­ stand the necessity of laws for or­ dered living and why respect for them is essential.

•CLASS OF 1941

The first social event of the school year was the initiation of the Fresh­ men and the Clemenceau Sophs.

These new students were entertained at the Freshman reception which was given by the seniors and mem­ bers of the Forum.

The Senior Hop, held on December 20, marked the beginning of the Christmas vacation. Wreaths, bells, and a large gaily decorated Christ­ mas tree added to the holiday spirit of the dance.

On March 28 members of the sen­ ior class presented the play, “The Phantom Tiger”, a mystery comedy in three acts.

One day in May the seniors for­ sook the Temple of Learning to go to parts unknown—in other words, Ditch Day came around and the sen­ iors were AWOL.

Class officers for the first semester were: Virgil Kane, president; Rus­ sell Jones, vice-president; Ruth Dick­ inson, secretary; Mary Wright, treas­ urer; Clara Coleman and Rose Vare­ la, Forum representatives.

Second semester officers were: Russell Jones, president; Ruth Dick­ inson, vice-president; Clara Cole­ man, secretary; Jimmy Lewis, treas­ urer; Mary Wright and Consuelo de la Torre, Forum representatives.

Faculty adviser of the senior class this year was Mr. Donald Ensign.

Baccalaureate services for the Class of 1941 were held Sunday, May 25. On May 29 Commencement ex­ ercises brought to a close the high school careers of a group of friends who had enjoyed many years of work and play together.

JUNIOR ULUS* Junior activities throughout the year pointed toward the crowning event of the spring—the Junior-Sen­ ior banquet and prom.

Members of the class entertained the student body at a benefit dance given in the high school auditorium on November 15.

“Beyond Reason,” a three-act play combining comedy and mystery, was presented on December 6.

The eagerly anticipated Prom was given on May 9 in honor of the grad­ uating class of 1941. The juniors carried out a patriotic motif in dec­ orating the Clark auditorium for this successful occasion.

The juniors were a large and en­ thusiastic class and worked this year under the leadership of Mr. Nelson Payne.

SOPHOMORE CLASS

The Sophomores, a large and in­ dustrious class under the sponsor­ ship of Miss Blanche Rayle, engaged in a number of school activities throughout the school year.

A number of sophomores were ac­ tive in various student undertakings.

Marjorie Jones and Joe Crockett were outstanding in musical circles both entering the Music Festival as soloists.

Varsity athletes among sophs were Bob Beltz, Harry Strahan, Salvador Medina, Dick Daley, Bill Haltigan, Teddy Simpson, Fred Smith, John Tavasci, Tony Guillen, William Tom, Clarence Wellington.

member of the English team which competed in the Academic Contest held in Flagstaff on April 5. George Truscott was a member of the de­ bate team.

An annual St. Valentine’s dance was planned for February 14, but the class found it necessary to post­ pone this activity until later.

freshman class* At the beginning of the school year, the Freshmen were initiated into high school by the Seniors. Af­ ter satisfactorily whitewashing the “C” and wearing burlap sack, carrot corsages and other such finery, they were rewarded at the end of the first week of school by being the guests of honor at a reception given by the student body. They were then ready to participate in high school social life and studies.

On March 14 the Freshmen enter­ tained the student body at the an­ nual St. Patrick’s dance. The hall was decorated in a green and yellow

color scheme. The Los Conquistadores band furnished the music.

'EIGHTH GRABS

The eighth grade conducted few extra-curricular activities this year as a whole, but many members of the class were active in a number of clubs, taking part in the programs of the library club, dramatics club, and the boys' and girls’ tumbling teams. Many of the eighth grade girls were also members of the Camp Fire Girls.

John King was selected winner of the junior high school division of the essay contest sponsored by the Amer­ ican Legion Auxiliary. The subject of the essay was “How Can I Pro­ tect America.” A number of other

pupils in the class also submitted compositions.

The eighth grade was well repre­ sented on both the junior high touch football and basketball teams.

SEVENTH G k A I) E The seventh grade was divided in­ to two sections, both under the spon­ sorship of Miss Catherine Henson.

Section I held a sucessful candy and ice cream sale during the first part of the school year. This group also presented a Forum program in April.

Section II took an active part in the high school Christmas program by portraying and presenting the Christmas story in original, large chalk pictures.

The year’s activities were brought to a close with a joint picnic for both sections.

Movies, dancing and all that sort of thing.

December 12—Basketball team begins tour of Salt River Valley.

December 17—Native Hawaiians entertained stu­ dents with their musical numbers and tales of the Islands. This was a presentation of the Na­ tional Assemblies.

December 18—Everybody was in midst of the flu epidemic.

December 19—Grand Theatre received competition.

As a Christmas present to the students, the Span­ ish Club sponsored a full length motion picture, “Love and Kisses.”

December 20—Santa Claus arrived a little early and made the students happy with a present of two weeks vacation . . . Wolves won over Seligman basketball team, 30 to 27. This was the first game of the season . . . Senior Hop was held after the game.

January 6—Why such long, painful faces? It was hard to take*up the old routine after two weeks of loafing.

January 8—Captain Art Hook, a deep sea diver, told students of his exciting adventures in “Davy Jones’ Locker”. The diver represented the Na­ tional Assemblies.

January 11—Wolves traveled to Ash Fork and found little trouble in overwhelming the Ash Fork team, 59 to 7.

January 17—Basketball team motored to Kingman to meet the Bulldogs. Kingman was defeated, 41 to 19.

January 18—Williams lost to our victorious team, 37 to 32.

January 24—Student body was entertained by the Arizona University Glee Club . . . Muckers and Clarkdale Wolves met for their annual bout . . . score was in our favor, 36 to 24.

January 25—The Camp Verde Cowboys challenged the Wolves. The game ended with Clarkdale holding the lead, 24 to 18.

January 31—The Wolves were handed their first de­ feat of the season in the Prescott game, 27 to 21.

March 28—“The Phantom Tiger,” presented by the Senior Class, furnished plenty of thrills and chills for the faculty, students and their friends.

April 5—Academic contest in Flagstaff called forth the scholars of C. H. S. Nice work.

April 10—School dismissed for Easter vacation. Two days of leisure!

April 18-19—Glee Clubs, Band and Drum and Bugle Corps traveled to Flagstaff to enter musical con­ tests and festival.

May ?—The underclassmen were filled with envy as the Seniors treked off on their annual Ditch Day. Everyone had a good time and longed for more picnics on school time.

May 9—Greatest social event of the year . . . The Junior-Senior Banquet and Prom, given in honor of the graduating Seniors of 1941. The Prom was marked as a great success.

May 25—The Seniors wore their first caps and gowns when they attended Baccalaureate serv­ ices at the Clark Memorial Auditorium.

May 26—Class night exercises displayed senior tal­ ent in a grand finale.

This event ended the Seniors’ school year which was filled with fun, work, and joy for everyone.

The schools of the United States are the principal agency set apart by society for the development of human resources.

In school, we learn the basic skills of reading, writing and arithmetic to which have been added, as the curriculum has been enriched and extended, many other areas of knowledge and skills, such as music, art, home economics, in­ dustrial arts, physical education, and other expansions of the school program.

The schools help to guide the

students in the surveys of the vo­ cational fields and help them make decisions that are vital.

Home and family life are pre­ pared for in the school. Home life is happier, too, if the wife knows how to cook and decorate and the husband knows how to make house­ hold repairs. Many of these skills are provided through courses such as home economics and industrial arts.

The school seeks to develop good character, honesty and dependabil­ ity in every pupil throughout the entire range of the program of school activity. *

The Wolves of Clarkdale high school came through the 1940 sea­ son with two victories, two ties and four losses. But win, lose or draw, Clarkdale students may be justly proud of the men who rep­ resented them on the football field for the spirit and good sportsman­ ship they showed throughout the season.

The Wolves opened their cam­ paign with a 26 to 0 victory over the Williams Vikings in a game played at home on September 20.

Touchdown honors were shared by Teague, Kane and Thompson, the latter carrying the ball over the line twice. Kane added two extra points by line plunges.

The second game of the season was played on September 27 in Flagstaff against the Eagles. Not until the last quarter were the Wolves able to score but came out with a 7 to 0 lead in a closely con­ tested game. Thompson scored both the touchdown and extra point on line bucks. Plecas and Beltz were outstanding for Clark­ dale in the line.

On October 14 the Winslow Bull­ dogs journeyed down to Clarkdale to engage the Wolves in a game which will probably go down in the history of Northern Arizona foot­ ball as the one played under the worst conditions. In a steady

downpour of rain the two teams battled to a scoreless deadlock after playing the entire game in water which started about three inches deep and ended up shin high.

The St. Johns Redskins, co­ champions of the North, took the Wolves into camp on October 12 by defeating them, 13 to 6. The Redskins drew first blood in the second quarter when Overson plunged over for a touchdown from the four-yard line. Clarkdale tied the game up in the third quarter, Thompson climaxing a 75-yard sus­ tained power drive by plunging over from the two. In the final minutes of the game St. Johns let go a 35-yard aerial for a touch­ down that gave them the victory.

The Lobos’ next game was played in Kingman against the Bulldogs, co-champs with St. Johns for the 1940 season. The Wolves absorbed their worst defeat at Kingman’s hands, coming home on the short end of a 19 to 0 score.

The Prescott Badgers, one of the Wolves’ traditional rivals, came to town on October 26 with high hopes of crushing the Clarkdale team but were turned back with a 6 to 6 tie. Prescott’s Alexander started the scoring in the second quarter on a 30-yard dash through entire Clarkdale team. Clarkdale evened the count in the fourth on

a touchdown pass from Thompson to Beltz in the end zone.

In the only non-conference game of the season, the Wolves met the Phoenix Indian School Braves at Phoenix on November 1. After they had earned a 7 to 0 lead over the Redskins at half time, the Wolf defense collapsed and the Indians scored two touchdowns to win, 13 to 7. Guillen at fullback was the main gun in the Clarksdale of­ fensive.

The Jerome-Clarkdale game, one of the hardest fought traditional rivalries in the North, was played on Armistice night under the lights of Clark Field before the largest local crowd of the 1940 season. The game was a hard fought affair from start to finish, but a 25-yard touchdown run by Curan of Jerome settled the issue and gave the vis­ itors a 6 to 0 victory.

Twenty-six boys finished the sea­ son, of whom only five will be lost by graduation. Seniors who played their last high school football last fall are Russell Jones, Virgil Kane, Donald Greenwood, George Siler, and Arthur Carlos.

Coach Goddard awarded twoyear football letters to George Plecas, Virgil Kane, Charles Yates, John Tavasci, Russell Jones, Har­ ley Thompson, Marion Teague, and Clarence Wellington. One-year let­ ters went to Clyde Wiggins, George Turner, Kenneth Thelen, Teddy Simpson, Harry Strahan, Bill Haltigan, George Siler, Salvador Me­ dina, Dick Daley and Steve O’Brien.

Numerals went to William Tom, Frank Lopez, Tony Moreno, Ar­ thur Carlos and Harold Montgom­ ery. Dale Hites earned a mana­ ger’s letter.

Bob Beltz: Sophomore, left end, all-Northern end.

Although this was his first appearance in a football uniform, Bob’s ability in snagging passes and blocking the opponents’ in­ terference was uncanny. It paved the way to his being selected to the all-Northern team for 1940.

Arthur “Porkan” Carlos: Senior, end.

It’s too bad that this is Arthur’s last season on the squad. His good defensive play will be missed next year.

Richard “Dick” Daley: Sophomore, end.

This is another sophomore with two years experience. He was a hard hitting de­ fensive end and an excellent pass receiver.

Donald “Greeneggs” Greenwood: Senior, quarterback.

This 130-pound quarterback, although handicapped by lack of weight, was one of the brainiest men on the squad and proved to be the outstanding punter on the team.

Tony “Surtho” Guillen: Sophomore, right end, fullback.

As an end, Tony was an excellent pass receiver and a fine defensive man. When shifted to fullback, Tony proved his worthi­ ness as a bruising plunger.

Bill is only a sophomore, but this was his second year on the varsity squad. He has good possibilities for making a great tackle for Clarkdale high.

This speedy halfback could always be depended upon for extra yardage. He was outstanding in broken field running and blocking. We will really miss “Tuz” next season.

Co-captain Rare was one of the most valuable men on the team this year. His blocking, kicking and fine spirit will be greatly missed next season.

Although Frank was only out half of the season, we know that he will make an­ other fir.e showing in his one remaining year.

Salvador “Sully” Medina: Sophomore, end.

His opponents saw plenty of Sully this year and can look forward to seeing much more of him in the next two years.

Harold “Beaver-Toot” Montgomery: Soph­ omore, guard.

Monty proved to be the clown of the squad and could always relieve the tension before a game with his comical antics.

Tony “Gortho” Moreno: Freshman, center.

This 190-pound freshman was really hard to move. In his three remaining years he’ll play a lot of football for Clarkdale.

George showed plenty of football abil­ ity this year with his steady blocking and vicious tackling. His opponents will see plenty of this scrappy center next year.

Harry Strahan: Sophomore, guard.

Although hampered by a shoulder in­ jury in the latter part of the season, Harry was one of the most aggressive men on the Clarkdale team.

George “Red” Siler: Senior, tackle.

This hard charging lineman would be a credit to any squad. Red is one of the few boys who have completed the third year out for football.

Teddy ‘ ‘Mormon” Simpson: Sophomore, guard.

Here’s a boy who will be back next year fighting for Alma Mater, and he won’t be handicapped by lack of experience.

When Porky gets mad, there’s bound to be trouble for the opposition. Although Fred is only a sophomore, he was in the starting lineup.

Here’s a boy with the real spirit. He came out regularly to practice, although he was ineligible.

Harley “Dusty” Thompson: Junior, left half.

The leading scorer of the 1940 season was this 150-pound junior. We hope he takes up next season where he left off last fall.

George “Prescott” Turner: Junior, half­ back.

Turner was always a problem for the first team to stop in scrimmage. This letterman has one more playing year for C. H. S. Clarence “Chuspa” Wellington: Junior, guard.

This very little guard was known as the fifth man in his opponent’s backfield.

Although handicapped by a trick knee, he was a 48-minute man.

Frank “Franko” Wellington: Senior.

Although Frank was ineligible, he gave the first squad stiff competition with his great open field running. We are sorry to see Frank leave the squad.

Clyde “Wig” Wiggins: Junior, quarterback.

Wig is proof that dynamite can come in small packages. His running, kicking and tackling were only overshadowed by his excellent signal calling.

Charlie “Toad” Yates: Junior, right guard.

Toad, although handicapped by lack of weight, made up for it with his fight and cleverness. This is Charlie’s third year on the varsity squad.

“Shaky” used his height to great ad­ vantage in knocking down passes on the defense. He was a fine snapper-back, a credit to the team.

Thirty junior high school boys with gridiron aspirations were out for touch football this year. Playing a six-game schedule, the junior high team, under the guidance of Coach Curtis Cox, finished the season with one victory^ two ties and three de­ feats.

In the junior high conference, in­ cluding Clarkdale, Jerome and Clem­ enceau, each team meets the other two twice during the season.

In the first game of the season the boys played Clemenceau here on Sep­ tember 20, losing by an 8 to 0 score.

Playing the junior Muckers from Jerome on October 5, Clarkdale held its ground and although unable to score, held the opponents to a score­ less tie. Prescott journeyed to Clark­ dale on October 11 and managed to take home a 7 to 0 victory.

In the second round Clarkdale played all games away from home, meeting Jerome first on October 19 in a game that duplicated the first en­ counter insofar as score was con­ cerned—again a 0 to 0 tie. Prescott also repeated its first performance and took another 7 to 0 victory on Oc­ tober 26. As a grand finale, however, the Clarkdale juniors cut loose against Clemenceau in the last game of the season, played on November 1, and won by a decisive 19 to 0.

The first Clemenceau and Prescott encounters were played in the even­ ing as preliminaries to high school games. Others were morning games.

Only freshman members of the team are eligible for letters. Those to whom junior “C’s” were awarded are Henry Rodriquez, Darwin Ryan, Dick Mason, Ralph Hites, Fred Guer­ rero and Billy Hunter.

The Wolves of Clarkdale High School ended their very successful 1940-1941 basketball season with a crushing 35 to 23 win over the Jerome Muckers. The Wolves finished second in the conference, thereby earning a bid to the State Tournament played in Tucson February 28 to March 2.

The Clarkdale point-a-minute men won 14 games and suffered two de­ feats during the regular season, these two being the aforementioned Pres­ cott game and a non-conference game played with the powerful Mesa Jackrabbits.

On a barnstorming tour of the Salt River valley in December, the Clark­ dale boys opened their season with a slim win over the Wickenburg Wran­ glers. The next night they were beaten by Mesa; and, on the next, playing for the third consecutive night on the road, the Wolves de­ feated Glendale, 32 to 27, in a hard fought game.

The Wolves opened conference play on December 21 with a win over the Seligman Antelopes. Clarkdale con­ tinued by defeating Winslow, Ashfork, Kingman, Williams, Jerome and Camp Verde. Then the Prescott Badgers came to town and snapped the Wolves’ winning streak. Taking up where they left off before the Pres­ cott game, Clarkdale went on to gain

victories over Winslow, Flagstaff, Prescott and Jerome to wind up their season.

Playing one of the toughest sched­ ules in the history of basketball in Clarkdale High, the Wolves came through with flying colors. Although they were eliminated in the first rounds of the State Tournament, the boys who played may be justly praised for their attitude, for the brand of ball they played and for their fine sportsmanship throughout the season.

This year’s squad will be cut in half by graduation and ineligibility.

Those who finished their high school basketball careers this season are: Captain Maurice Rosas, Virgil Kane, Donald Greenwood, Gonzalo Leon and Joe Contreras. Varsity regulars re­ turning next year will be Bob Beltz, Jesus Rodriquez, Frank Lopez, Harry Strahan, Salvador Medina and Tony Guillen. With these boys and many fine players up from the junior var­ sity and the junior high, the outlook for the Wolves in basketball next sea­ son looks very bright.

The Clarkdale Wolf Pups, play­ ing their first season under the tute­ lage of Boyd Shumway, played an eight game schedule. They won four games and lost four. Games played were: Clarkdale Pin Setters, three times; Sedona grade school, twice; Mayer, once; Jerome, once; the Se­ dona Civilian Conservation Corps, once.

The second team was composed of one senior, two juniors and five soph­ omores . These boys were: Juan Flores, senior; Sidney Deitrich and Harley Thompson, juniors; Pat San­ chez, Dick Dale}7, Glenn Everett, Roy Gradford and Antonio Uribe, soph­ omores.

The C.C.C.’s beat them 36 to 33, and Jerome second team was victorious over them 29 to 24. In a third en­ gagement the second team defeated Sedona twice by large scores, 68 to 11 and 28 to 7, and Mayer was beaten 45 to 21.

Harry Strahan and Salvador Me­ dina began the season as second team men but were promoted to the varsi­ ty squad later.

These second team boys gained valuable experience and were com­ mended highly for their sportsman­ ship by opposing players and coaches.

On March 7 the Jerome and Clarkdale Lettermen acted as co-sponsors of an all star basketball game be­ tween a combined Jerome and Clarkdale team and the Flagstaff Teach­ ers’ College Frosh.

The Lettermen’s club, under the supervision of Coach Goddard, is made up of high school boys who have completed in high school ath­ letics and have received a letter.

This organization entertained the high school student body at a barn dance on November 29. The audi­ torium was changed into a corral for the evening, with hay, saddles and even a few chickens to add local color. Western attire, ranging from the hayseed to the Hollywood type, made a picturesque scene. The event was marked as one of the most suc­ cessful of the year.

Clarkdale’s four debate teams made a remarkable record in the Northern Arizona high school debate tourna­ ment held in Flagstaff on March 21 and 22, emerging from the three pre­ liminary rounds without a loss. Of sixteen teams entered from five schools—Winslow, Jerome, Prescott, FlagstafF and Clarkdale—all but seven were eliminated after the third round.

Of those seven, four were Clarkdale teams. Others remaining were two Winslow teams and one Prescott team, which eliminated Clarkdale teams in the fourth and fifth rounds.

Winslow defeated Prescott in the fi­ nal round to win the championship.

The question debated was the na­ tional high school question: “Re­ solved: That the power of the Fed­ eral government should be increased/' Russell Jones, speaking on the sub­ ject, “Can Our Democracy Survive?” was named second in the Northern district competition conducted as part of the State Oratorical Contest spon­ sored by the Arizona Republic. The oration was given in Flagstaff on February 26.

Gonzalo Leon entered the compe­ tition in extemporaneous speaking which was held as part of the Aca­ demic meet in Flagstaff on April 5.

The Photography Club, under the leadership of Mr. Nelson Payne, was divided into three groups because of the very large number of students who enrolled in this organization at the beginning of the year.

These three groups consisted of two beginners’ classes and an ad­ vanced class. The beginners’ classes each met once a week, one on Tues­ days and the other on Thursdays, seventh period. The advanced group met on Monday evenings at 7:00 o’clock.

In the beginners’ classes, Mr. Payne was assisted in teaching the students by members of the advanced group.

Negative printing, roll developing and picture taking were the major activities of club members. Devel­ oping paper and chemicals were sup­ plied by the school. The members fur­ nished their own films and cameras.

During the month of December the advanced class made several differ­ ent types of Christmas cards with lo­ cal scenes printed on them. Several sets of these cards were sold to high school students who were not mem­ bers of the club.

The Girls’ Tumbling club was made up this year of junior high school girls who met three times a week, seventh periods, with Miss Helen Armstrong.

The girls participated in the all­ school May Day festival, doing acrobatic work. In April George Sherman made a motion picture in color of the girls as they per­ formed.

The club was first organized in the spring of 1940 as an extra-cur­ ricular activity for a group of jun­ ior and senior high school girls.

The team then took part in the May festival.

Because they say all work and no play will make Jack a dull boy, the Cribbage club was organized this year with the purpose of acquaint­ ing students with an enjoyable lei­ sure time activity. The club proved to be very popular.

Twenty-three boys met with the club sponsor, Mr. Ralph McBride, every Thursday seventh period.

Instruction in the techniques of the game were given at the first of the year as most of the players were beginners, only a few having had any experience. As soon as the members became familiar with the game, they began a round robin tournament which has been con-

tinued throughout the year, sev­ eral rounds being played. At the end of the year Mr. McBride awarded a cup to the player hav­ ing the greatest number of points.

At the time of publication of this book, the winner had not been de­ termined, but Jack Morgan, Billy Uren, George Turner, Leo Best and Russell Jones seemed to be the most probable candidates. All had in April won more than half of the games which they had played.

The members of the club made their own cribbage boards in man­ ual training.

Los Conquistadores Club, under the supervision of Mr. Adolph Orrantia, was organized by a group of Spanish speaking students in order to foster friendship and social relationship among its members and other stu­ dents.

Social functions for the year in­ cluded various parties and picnics.

As a Christmas present to the stu­ dent body the members of the club sponsored the presentation in assem­ bly on December 18 of a motion pic­ ture entitled “With Love and Kisses.”

One of the outstanding achieve­ ments of this organization was the publication of “Los Conquistadores,” a monthly newspaper printed in Spanish. Boy Scout Troop 217 led an active life this year under the leadership of Scoutmaster Chet Jones.

Of special interest were the many hikes and camping trips. Last spring the troop packed in to Sycamore Can­ yon. Among the longer camping trips was a five-day sojourn at Mormon Lake last summer. While there the Scouts took side trips to visit Sunset Crater and Lowell Observatory.

Troop 217 participated in the pa­ triotic meeting held in Clarkdale in July. They also assisted in the fire­ works demonstration at Peck’s Lake on July 4.

Under the leadership of Mr. Adolph Orrantia, Boy Scout Troop 218 engaged this year in a number of interesting activities.

A successful project of the troop was the establishment of a work­ shop equipped with machinery nec­ essary for manual arts work, in­ cluding power and carving tools.

Last summer Troop 218 made a three-day camping trip to the Grand Canyon and the boys are planning for an extended trip this summer. The locale of this summer’s camp has not been deter­ mined, but the Natural Bridge in Utah and Tonto Basin are being considered as the most probable destinations.

In sports activities the Scouts have taken a great deal of interest.

They were active in basketball dur­ ing the season and are preparing for soft ball this summer.

On April 14 a Father and Son banquet was held. The Mothers’ Club sponsored the banquet.

To a large extent the success of Troop 218 is due to the efforts of the members of the Scout Execu­ tive Committee. Mr. Padilla is chairman of this committee.

A new service group in school this year and one of outstanding merit was the Safety Council, organized un­ der the supervision of Mr. Adolph Orrantia. The aim of this Council was to bring about a better practice and observance of safety in Clarkdale High School. The major undertak­ ing of the Council was the patrolling of street crossings at noon and at other times when pupils in large num­ bers were crossing the streets.

Members of the organization vol­ untarily offered their services in or­ der that safety and orderly conduct could be encouraged in the school.

The Dramatics Club, under the guidance of Miss Blanche Rayle, conducted a program of interesting activities throughout the year.

Members of the club, during regular meetings held each Thurs­ day, read and studied a number of one-act plays and studied the arts of speech and of make-up.

The club sponsored a program in assembly on February 28, pre­ senting Mary Sykes and Joe Crock­ ett in vocal selections, both solo and duet. A special feature of the program was a burlesque style show.

The Junior High Library club con­ sisted of twenty-three members who met after school on various days.

This organization presented an as­ sembly program during the first se­ mester. The play, which was writ­ ten in part by members of the club with Miss Henson’s assistance, en­ couraged the use of the library. An­ other assembly program was planned for the spring.

Members of this club volunteered to take charge of the library seventh periods during the school year when high school students were not avail­ able.

The high school band, under the direction of Mr. Richard de Pont, was made up this year of 25 players.

Among its regular activities the band played at football and basketball games and in a number of assemblies during the year.

The band was entered in the spring Music Festival held in Flagstaff on April 18 and 19 as one of the musical units representing Clarkdale High School. This year for the first time schools were designated as Class A or Class B, according to enrollment.

Clarkdale, with an enrollment of less than 250, entered Class B competi­ tion. The band contest number was “Horizon Overture” by Peter Buys.

Juan Flores and Refugio Flores, cornet, violin and clarinet soloists, participated in the solo events at the Festival. The instrumental solo num­ bers were: violin, “Waltz No. 2” by Weber-Burmester; clarinet, “Prelude” and “Tarentella” by Cohen; cornet, “Capriccioso” by Jeanjean.

This musical organization suffers the loss of seven players who are members of the graduating class.

The Drum and Bugle Corps, sponsored by the music depart­ ment, had a membership of thirtyfive girls this year. Colorful in their maroon and white uniforms, the corps performed several times.

Among the events in which they took part were between half per­ formances at the high school foot­ ball and basketball games, at the Tempe-Flagstaff Teachers College Freshman football game, the spring festival and the parade of the Legionnaires on Memorial Day.

The senior play, “The Phantom Tiger,” under the direction of Miss Blanche Rayle, was presented on March 28.

This three-act mystery comedy, a sequel to “Tiger House,” which was given by Clarkdale high school stu­ dents several years ago, was pro­ nounced a dramatic success.

The plot of the play concerned the complications that arose in solving the mystery of the disappearance of Aunt Sylvia (Mary Wright). Erma Lowrie (Roberta Pesterfield), the heiress of Mystery Manor, and her fiance, Macintosh (Jack Morgan), were chiefly responsible for unravel­ ing the tangled threads of the mys­ tery. Spiritual seances, ghosts and tiger’s claws added an air of eeriness.

Mr. Ensign was general manager of the house staff. Business man­ ager was Edward Redmond, assisted

by Elton Edens.

On the technical staff were Miss Henson, adviser; Lucille Hites, prop­ erty manager; Miss Rayle, make-up artist; Leo Best, Albert Venables, Morris Humphrey, John Manriquez, technicians. Other members of the senior class contributed to the pre­ sentation of the play by selling tick­ ets, ushering and working on publicity.

“Beyond Reason,” a three-act mys­ tery comedy, was presented on the night of December 6 by the junior class under the direction of Miss Blanche Rayle.

The action of “Beyond Reason” took place in an asylum for mental patients. The story concerned two criminals, Dr. Wilfred Steele (Pres­ ton Heinle) and Sonia Petroff (Lor­ raine Wilson), owners of the asylum, and their efforts to gain ill-gotten riches by preying upon their rich, in­ nocent victims. Through the efforts of Jean Heather (June Whitewing) and Skip Tolliver (Clyde Wiggins) the criminals were brought to justice.

Other characters in the play were: Rose Colfax, played by Meredyth Willard; Clyde Loring, by Kenneth
