In passing through the pages of this book, you will witness history; we believe it will be even more interesting because it is such. If reference in years to come to this tangible record of the happenings of 1936-37 recalls happily to mind the individuals and episodes of high school, the 1937 Alchemist will have served its purpose. Let us now proceed to re­ view the life of these high school days—

Dedication The smelter is more than an integral part of our com­ munity—it is the life and existence of Clarkdale.

The copper-smelting industry, the foundation of all local business and work, has been operating for some 25 years in this community and gives employment directly to the greater percentage of the local popu­ lation. Without the smelter there would be no town, no school, and no annual. Therefore we take great pleasure in dedicating this, the 1937 issue of the Alchemist, to the Clarkdale Smelter.

FORUM PRESIDENTS Kenneth King Henry Maxwell

With Miss Eleanor Anderson as sponsor the Forum met every other Friday for the “purpose of carrying on all student enter­ prises with the cooperation and under the supervision of the fac­ ulty.’’ On these occasions some kind of literary or dramatic enter­ tainment was presented. The outstanding innovations this year were the presentation of a number of pep assemblies to stimulate school spirit and interest in athletic events, the abolishment of the traditional sergeant-at-arms, and the installation of a cus­ todian of the flag and of a color guard. This color guard gave the junior high its first opportunity for active participation in forum ritual. The student council, a branch of the forum, met more regularly than it had for many years. Under the auspices of this group a student activity ticket was planned by means of which the students will be able to attend dramatic and athletic events at a reduced price.

With the memory of three enjoyable years which lay behind them and pleasant anticipation of their final high school year lying ahead, the members of the senior class started to school in 1937.

Forced to accept, together with their newly acquired maturity, the resultant need and understanding of money, the seniors ran­ sacked their minds for lucrative enterprises. The immediate result of this was a carnival given in the Clark Auditorium on November 21. This was followed by the sponsoring of the picture show, David Copperfield,” at the Grand theatre. As the climax of their money-making schemes and in an effort to obtain the funds to publish their annual year-book, the class presented a three-act comedy, “Meet the Duchess,” on April 9. i »

On December 18 the seniors entertained the high school and faculty at the annual Senior Hop. The hall, beautifully decorated in silver and blue, was the scene of one of the most successful The senior class was well represented in all fields of extra­ curricular activities. Delfino Rosas entered the Music Festival contest as a violin soloist, and many seniors were members of the various glee clubs. Julia Huntington won first place for twelfth year English at Flagstaff. Clarkdale’s outstanding athletes for the year were to be found in the senior class and one, William Moore, gained state recognition for his excellent playing as fullback on the football team.

In May the seniors eluded the rest of the high school and jour­ neyed to parts unknown for a riotous “ditch day.” After consum­ ing vast quantities of salad, sandwiches, and pickles, they returned home at peace with the world, but beginning to feel a trifle uneasy at the imminence of the close of school.

The class of ’39 took the first bow of its third year on December 11 when the hilarious comedy, “Tons of Trouble,’’ was presented.

This play broke all former records for light, swift-moving drama.

During the brief periods between acts the audience was enter­ tained by the school orchestra.

On February 5 further class talent was displayed in the junior Forum program. A musical reading, several tap dances, and a program of ukeline music formed the first part of the entertain­ ment. These were followed by a one-act play, acclaimed as one of the outstanding entertainments of the year, which was an oldfashioned silent movie in pantomime.

The juniors emerged victorious in several phases of athletics, taking first place in both the volley ball and basketball tourna­ ments.

Numerous members of the class represented the school in the Flagstaff Music Festival. Irma Smith competed in the alto solo contest. In the Academic Meet Katherine Powell entered for first year typing; Martha Jane Garrett and Billy Jean Ralge for second year typing; Martha Jane Garett, Katherine Powell and Ethelda Simmons for eleventh grade English; Martha Jane Garett for chemistry; and Deraid Keezer and Ethelda A fitting finale to the Juniors’ year was to be found in the Junior-Senior prom and banquet on May 14. Amid southern holly­ hocks and an old plantation setting the class of ’39 closed the third and most successful of its high school years.

Strengthened by the addition of many students from Clemenceau, the sophomore class made its first public appearance on Novem­ ber 24 when it presented the annual Thanksgiving Forum pro­ gram. Cleverly dressed as the various parts of a Thanksgiving dinner, the sophomores portrayed the chaos which resulted when a Thanksgiving turkey and his friends refused to be sacrificed in the name of patriotism and gratitude. Several dances and vocal solos were cleverly woven into the narrative.

On February 12 the class proved its social ability at the Valen­ tine dance at which the members of the student body and the faculty were entertained. The decorations and feature numbers at this dance well merited the praise and commendation which they received.

The sophomore class furnished the school the majority of its outstanding musicians this year. Roberta Riley, Eldon Rudd, and Richard Johnson were contestants at the Flagstaff Music Festival.

Roberta winning second place for the soprano solo, and Richard third for the bass solo. In addition a number of sophomores were members of various glee clubs.

Year after year it has been the tradition of the school for the seniors to initiate the Clarkdale freshmen and the Clemenceau sophomores as full-fledged students of Clarkdale High School.

Therefore September 24 was set as the day on which the boys were to obey the standard initiation of painting the “C”. The excellence of the work done on this softened the seniors’ hearts to such an extent that the usual five-day initiation period was shortened to two. The outstanding features of this initiation were the dunce caps worn by the initiates during all school hours and the problem to be memorized and recited upon the request of any senior.

The Freshman Reception was held September 25 and marked the official introduction of each plebe to the bona fide forum members. The relief and gayety of the underclassmen at being released from their bonds set the keynote for the other guests, and a genuinely enjoyable dance resulted.

On Friday, March 12, the freshmen ventured to offer the school a little social life on their own behalf. The hard-times dance was an unusually original and well-planned dance and proved of the freshmen that size is no determination of worth.

The freshmen were represented in athletics and music and sent two representatives, Kenneth Foote and Leon de Leon, to the Flagstaff academic contest for English and algebra respectively.

£ypanislt duly The Spanish Club, organized three years ago, continued this year under the sponsorship of Mr. Orrantia. Meetings were held bi­ weekly on Thursdays for the three-fold purpose of promoting a better understanding of Spanish, fostering a spirit of friendship among classmates, and enabling the students to contact each other in an effort to develop a feeling for the language.

The outstanding accomplishment of the Spanish Club this year was the inauguration of a Friday afternoon social hour at which the members of the student body could avail themselves of the opportunity to learn and practice dancing. The club invited the junior high school students to this social hour, but reserved the right to eject any individual who failed to conduct himself properly.

April 30 the club entertained the high school and faculty at a dance in the intermediate building. This dance, the first large social event to be given by the Spanish Club since its organization, marked the close of the club’s activities for the year.

Glchemist In the publication of the 1937 Alchemist the staff has tried to present an accurate pictorial and word history of this school year.

Henry Maxwell, Julia Huntington, and William Moore have had the responsibility of assembling the book. Pictures, other than those made by Mr. Bate of Prescott, were made by Henry with the assistance of Charles Reese and George Sherman. Julia Hunt­ ington has been chief scribe. The mechanical end of the editing was handled by William Moore. Jean Schwerdtfeger, Sam Medigovich, Sara Maxwell, and Harold Moody were the reporters. Jean Schwerdtfeger and Frances Liljenberg typed copy for the printer.

George Sherman and Charles Reese are the boys who contacted the business firms for the advertising which contributed largely towards making the book financially possible. The circulation of the book was in the hands of Margaret Rucker and Frank Becchetti. The entire senior class, through the production of the class play and the sponsoring of the moving picture “David Copperfield” and the carnival, helped finance this annual.

Woljj Howl The school newspaper, the Wolf Howl, was printed again this year, under the combined sponsorship of Miss Downey, who had charge of the content of the paper, and Miss Watson, who had charge of the printing. In order to facilitate the bi-weekly printing of the paper two staffs were organized which alternately pub­ lished the paper. This enabled more interested students to take part in the school’s journalistic work.

The style of the paper was changed this year so that it is now more of a newspaper than magazine publication. After concen­ trated effort and study the style of the paper was standardized and uniformity was striven for throughout the year. The success of this effort may be ascertained by the fact that on April 3 the paper received a rating of 725 points out of a possible 1000 in the Flagstaff Academic Meet.

The only social activity of the Wolf Howl staff during the year was a theatre party given early in the fall.

Cfill /ZeselOes A number of high school girls have participated this year in the activities of the Girl Reserves, an organization whose aims are both social and altruistic. High-lighted in the social calendar were the box supper held on October twentieth and the dance given on December nineteenth in the auditorium of the inter­ mediate school. At Christmas time the girls made rag dolls and gave them to Mrs. Goodwin for distribution. Earlier in the year they sold for-get-me-nots for the benefit of the disabled war veterans.

Bettie Washer, president, and Dorothy Bailey, delegate, at­ tended the state Girl Reserves’ convention held in Phoenix in March. Funds for this trip were furnished from the proceeds of a successful bazaar sponsored by the organization.

On March ninth a recognition service was held for the follow­ ing new members: Vivian Tyler, Erlah Dent, Florine Gilcrease, Nell Wright, Winifred Parker, Jane Linn, Fredria Welch, and Ruth Durnez.

Officers of the club were Bettie Washer, president; Mariam Hogan, vice-president; Mary Lou Lewis, secretary; Mae Vidler, treasurer. The girls have worked under the guidance of Mrs. Morris Fowler of Clarkdale and Mrs. Ersel Garrison of Cottonwood.

I3c\j Scouts Boy Scout Troop No. 217 has this year acted under the leadership of Mr. Chester Jones, appointed scoutmaster to succeed Mr. Earl Twitty. New patrols were formed in July, and Albert Nausin and Donald Greenwood were elected patrol leaders, Kenneth Foote, scribe and treasurer. In November the troop elected Albert Nau足 sin and Milford Jones patrol leaders. During the summer months the scouts took three trips, going to Oak Creek Canyon, Mormon Lake, and Sycamore Canyon. The Sycamore Canyon trip was made via pack burros. The troop received the Acorn Award for a mem足 bership increased over that of the year before. In April the Clarkdale troop competed with the Jerome boys in a field meet, the latter team winning decisively.

llettelmens duly The LettermerVs Club was organized at the annual football ban­ quet in December for the purpose of promoting comradeship and sportsmanship among the athletes of Clarkdale high school. The club is composed of boys who have received a letter in either football or basketball and who maintain passing grades in at least three subjects.

New members’ initiation consists of wearing the left trouser leg rolled up, a red football sock, a tennis shoe, a silk stocking for a necktie, and shoulder pads. This initiation was celebrated by a party in the intermediate school auditorium on January 15 and by a picnic at Peck’s Lake on April 2.

Among the more serious enterprises of the club were the spon­ soring of a tournament for the junior high teams of northern Arizona, the purchase of an electric score-board for athletic events, and the purchase of life-time passes to all athletic events staged by Clarkdale for all men making three letters in one sport.

Pep £cjuac) With Miss Foster as sponsor the pep squad continued its activi­ ties with renewed vigor at the beginning of the year. Sara Maxwell was elected president for the first semester and all other officers were dispensed with. After intensive drill in the gymnasium the girls marched at the home football games dressed in their official uniforms, maroon skirts and white twin sweaters.

One of the leading contributions of the pep squad to school spirit was the series of pep assemblies which it sponsored. By means of short, well-planned skits and programs more interest was aroused in athletic events than had been evidenced for many years.

At the first of the second semester the Pep Club reorganized, elected new officers, and adopted a point merit system by means of which letters could be earned. With Bobby Riley as president, Josephine Becchetti as secretary-treasurer, LaVerne Harrel, Mae Vidler, and Betty Vidler as cheer leaders the pep club planned to surpass during the basketball season their accomplishments of the first semester. Additional interest within the club was aroused by the vision of letters to be earned through hard work and faith­ ful practice. Among the activities by which points could be earned were the selling of tickets, attending of games in uniform, and attending of drill practice. [ 39 ]

OlcLestia For many years the Clarkdale orchestra has been purely a figura­ tive organization whose occasional valiant attempts at harmony have been met with surreptitious smiles or expressions of sym­ pathy. This year, however, under the capable direction of Miss Foster, the orchestra developed into an active group which played at many school functions to the enjoyment of all those listening.

The membership of the orchestra increased this year, as did the variety of instruments in use. Additional inspiration was offered by the merit and demerit system introduced for the first time this year. Each student had one hundred merits to start the year and deductions or additions to these were made according to the type of work done by the student.

Delfino Ross, Maurice Rosas, and Milford Jones entered the Flagstaff musical contest as soloists on April 16. Other orchestra members presented solo numbers on various local programs dur­ ing the year.

CjilL’ Cjlee duly The Girls’ Glee Club organized this year in the form of a club with Josephine Becchetti as president, Frances Lilgenberg as vice-presi­ dent, and Willie Stout as treasurer. The official glee club uniform, which was worn at the concerts in Clarkdale, Jerome, and Flag­ staff, was a white dress with red trimming worn with red sandals.

The Girls’ Glee Club provided much of the community musical entertainment during the past school year. The Woman’s Club, Kiwanis, Rotarian, P.T.A., and B. & P. W. were among the organ­ izations to which the Club gladly offered their services.

The girls sold candy and gum during the year in order to earn money to help defray the expense of their uniforms.

Roberta Riley and Irma Smith entered the Flagstaff Music Festival as soprano and alto contestants respectively, and Roberta Riley, Vivian Tyler, and Margaret Rucker composed the girls’ trio. Roberta placed second in spite of the strong competition which was offered by many northern schools. The Girls’ Glee Club was accompanied by Julia Huntington.

So\fS Cjlee Club In spite of one of the smallest regular memberships which it has had in many years, the Boys’ Glee Club showed an unusual amount of talent. Eldon Rudd and Richard Johnson were solo contestants at Flagstaff; Richard won third place in the baritone solo. Harold Moody, Eldon Rudd, Charles Kuzell, and Richard Johnson com­ posed the boys’ quartet which sang at several local programs and entered the Flagstaff contest.

The glee club also sang at the musical presented in the Clark Memorial Auditorium December 4 and at the concerts in Jerome and Clarkdale May 1 and April 14.

Juan Refugio accompanied the Boys’ Glee Club the first semes­ ter, and Julia Huntington the second.

The play was a comedy and dealt with the difficulties of Albert Hale, who, spending the money his uncle had given him to buy a farm with, had to find a farm to claim as his own when his uncle came visiting. With the assistance of a friend Albert solved the problem by temporarily loaning his wife to this friend in exchange for his friend’s farm. John White, the friend, had to produce a wife because he had falsely told a rich aunt that he was married.

The resultant humorous situations when the aunt and uncle mer on the farm were enjoyed by an unusually large audience, which fully appreciated the expert performances of the following unusu­ ally talented cast:

The senior play, a three-act comedy entitled “Meet the Duchess, was presented April 9 in the Clark Memorial Auditorium. The plot centered around Elsie Blake of Hogwash, Iowa, who won a popularity contest back home and then journeyed to Hollywood, confident of the ease with which she would become a star over night. In “Mrs. Plop’s Exclusive, Refined, Professional Boarding House” she met many interesting characters; a press agent (with whom she falls in love) ; numerous former stars or would-be stars, a Harvard professor, and a motion picture producer. The efforts of these people to get her, disguised as a duchess, into the motion pictures formed the basis for a humorous, well-written, and wellproduced comedy. Miss Rayle, director of dramatics, should re­ ceive especial credit for her untiring efforts to make this play a success. The cast was:

This was the first year for Mr. Russell Goddard to coach the Wolves. After graduating from State Teachers’ College at Tempe, where he played tackle for the Bulldogs, he coached the Tempe freshmen, played professional football on the coast. Under his guidance the Wolves employed the deceptive double wingback for­ mation with excellent results. The boys know Mr. Goddard as a friend, advisor, and “regular fellow”; no one is better liked than our amiable, happy-go-lucky coach, who has done much to­ ward rejuvenating the school’s athletic activi­ ties.

Douml £et! Hike l The Wolves ended the 1 935 foot­ ball season with the successful performance of three wins and three losses. On the opening day of school, thirty candidates re­ ported for practice; of these, twenty had the makings to stick the entire season. To ascertain the merits and defects of the prospec­ tive team, the squad went to Flag on Sept. 22 to scrimmage the col­ lege freshmen.

October 1 the Wolves invaded the Flagstaff Eagles’ stronghold.

Injury in practice or doctor’s orders had incapacitated several regulars; nevertheless the team made a good showing. Cracking the Eagle line from end to end, Captain Bill Moore put across the only score of the game. Excessive fumbling kept the score low; the game ended with Clarkdale, 6—Flagstaff, 0—the first game in six years the Wolves have won from the Eagles.

On October 10 the Winslow Bulldogs were encountered. With beautifully executed passes the Bulldogs scored in the first quar­ ter. The Wolves suddenly started playing ball in the second quar­ ter, but were interrupted in a powerful drive down the field when a Winslow man intercepted a pass and made the second Bulldog tally. But the Wolves continued pounding and in the third period scored. The last quarter saw the Winslow pass offense clicking once more to produce a third touchdown for the Bulldogs, making the final score Winslow 18—Clarkdale 6.

A non-conference game took place with the Peoria Panthers on October 17. The smoothly clicking Wolf offense proving too strong for their ground play, the Panthers took to the air, but met

with little success; Bob Cunning­ ham snatched a Panther pass and raced across the goal for the Wolves’ second tally. In the third period Clarkdale stopped a re­ newed Panther air attack and accounted for a third touchdown, ending the game Clarkdale 19— Peoria 9.

The Wolves met the Kingman Miners on October 24. On the first play a Miner caught a Wolf fumble and scored the first of the three Kingman touchdowns. An air attack by Clarkdale in the closing minutes of play was stopped from scoring by the final gun.

Captain Moore’s defensive work behind the line consistently held the Miners from pay dirt; nevertheless the final score stood at Kingman 18—Clarkdale 0.

The Prescott Badgers crossed the mountain to meet the Wolves on November 31. The tussle, played in mud and rain, was domi­ nated throughout by the Wolves, who pushed two tallies across in the second quarter. Outplaying the Badgers in every depart­ ment, the Wolves kept the situation well in hand throughout the second half. A third score was made by King after sifting through an army of tacklers. Bud Young’s work at quarter contributed to the Wolves’ excellent showing. The final score, Clarkdale 19— Prescott 0.

The annual Armistice Day battle with the Jerome Muckers, the last game of the season, brought disaster to the Wolves. Although they played a fine brand of football, the Clarkdale boys were steam-rollered by the powerful Mucker contingent. Much more one-sided than the game itself, the score ended with Jerome 32— Clarkdale 0.

MOORE, captain and fullback. Bill was the best defensive back in the north; he was mentioned on all-state team and received the all-northern full­ back berth.

MEDIGOVICH. Powerhouse Sambo played guard like no one else could; he received all-northern and all-state mention.

MINERICH. George’s shrewd and agile brain at quarterback produced many yards.

HOGAN. Walt was a fast and hard-hitting end; his punt-covering was excellent.

WILSON. Grinning, ferocious, fighting Jim put his great bulk to productive use; he received all-state mention.

MEDINA. Luis’ powerful running and blocking will be missed next year.

MAXWELL. Hank at the pivot position was a “johnny-on-the-spot;” he received all-northern and all-state mention.

MURILLO. Johnny was one of the fastest backs in the north.

CUNNINGHAM. Little Bob was a slippery, hard-to-handle yard gainer; he received all-state mention.

SHERMAN. Soy at his end position had a way of smearing ’em on the defense and knocking ’em down on the offense.

MONGIN I. Joe at guard was the fifth man in the other team’s backfield.

KING. From his halfback position Kenneth produced many a yard with his knee-action.

YOUNG. Bud played quarter with the ability and mind of a master. His block­ ing and tackling were wonderful to behold.

PARKER. Hayseed was a strong defensive tackle with immovable determination.

MUNOS. Salvador played guard in a remarkable fashion.

MANETH. Farmer neither gave nor took quarter when he smacked ’em down.

CROCKETT. Red-headed Bob was a fine, con­ sistent guard who never would quit.

URIBE. Heavy Joe at center was always willing to shoulder more than his share—a football natural.

MANRIQUEZ. Smiley gave a good performance at end.

HAYES. Leonard at his end position liked work and feared no man.

REESE. Charlie, with his congeniality and amia­ bility, kept the squad in a merry mood. A well-liked manager, he’ll be missed next year. [ 54 )

The basketball season for the Wolves had a none too promising beginning, but, before the season was over, Coach Goddard had a team which showed the local fans some spectacular playing, winning games from the Mesa and the Phoenix Indian teams which are always in the running for state honors. The Wolves played twenty-one games, winning twelve and losing nine, col­ lecting 586 points to their opponents’ 456. The Wolves won the Northern Arizona consolation championship at the tournament held in Flagstaff on March 5 and 6. Captain William Moore was picked on the all-tournament five as forward, and Delfino Rosas, his running mate, took one of the forward positions on the second tournament team. By graduation will be lost William Moore, Delfino Rosas, Bob Belzner, and Walter Hogan. To take their places are some promising boys able to make the Wolf pack a threat for the coming year. They are Buddy Young, Smiley Manriquez, Milton Clark, Bob Clark, Sherman Parker, Vernon Hazen, and Charles Kuzell. All of the above boys received basket ball letters. Milford Jones, as manager, was also awarded a “C”.

Two intramural tournaments, one in volley ball and one in basket­ ball, were held this year by the high school girls, the junior class teams emerging victorious in both sports. The volley ball games were played in November, the final game between the juniors and freshmen ending 25 to 23. Runners-up in the basketball tournament played in March were the seniors who lost to the juniors 15 to 12.

Honorary all-high school teams were chosen in both sports. On the “varsity” volley ball team were Frances Liljenberg, Margaret Rucker, Frances de la Torre, Vivian Tyler, Yvonne Landers, Paula Rodriquez, Dorothy Bailey, Mabyn Wright, Rose Juarez, Myrtle Mounts, Jeronima Juarique, and Josephine Villaescusa. The “var­ sity” basketball team was made up of Rosa Juarez, Paula Rodri­ quez, Dorothy Bailey, Margaret Rucker, Frances Liljenberg, Ma­ byn Wright, L’Verne Harrell, Vivian Tyler, Josephine Becchetti, and Frances de la Torre.

fluniol fiicjh Basketball The junior high basketball squad, under the able coaching of Mr. Cox, ended an impressive season by defeating the Jerome junior high team to win the Northern Junior High Tournament cham­ pionship. All told, the juniors played fourteen games this season, winning ten and losing four. Clarkdale rolled up a total of 306 points to 217 for the opposition. George Eridio and Salvador Mar­ tinez were selected on the all-Northern junior high team.
