LEARNING WITHOUT TEXTBOOKS One should not feel that all of education is hound up in textbooks. "Book learning" is only a part of the pro­ That does not mean gram which the modern school sets up.

It merely means that any lack of confidence in textbooks, outside your books and your regular recitations, there are other forms of training that you should have.

In the first place, there is the matter of train­ developing your body for strength ing your physical self and health. You can learn from a textbook how to be healthy, but the surest way t6 have health is put the body through its paces.

Another thing that you do not learn from a text­ book is how to get along with your fellow pupils and with the school authorities. The pupil is largely on his own re­ sources in this part of his education, He may receive a few sharp lessons from his fellows, but for the most part, he will have to set many of his own standards.

School clubs are organized for the purpose of pro­ viding some .form of activity which appeals to some partic­ ular interest the pupil has. Select a club that deals with one of your hobbies. If your school does not provide the clubs that appeal to you, there v/ill no doubt be other splendid opportunities to receive valuable training apart from the regular school subjects. Perhaps you can indentify yoursolf with the glee clubs or orchestra so that your talent for music may bo developed.

THE HISTORY OF THE CLASS OF f 34 In 1931, this graduating class was composed of twenty-three squirming little freshmen, who were compelled to wear green hair ribbons and do other strange things which ill became the haughty demeanor of a high school student#The outstanding ep­ isodes in the freshman year, however, were the senior initia­ tion and reception of the fresh, the painting of the "C", and the St.Patricks Day Dance at which the aforementioned young­ sters were gracious hosts and hostesses.Here the "Farm Dance" theme proved delightfully informal for those attending. .As Freshmen, we already displayed considerable school spirit.

As Sophomores, our roll was increased by the addition of thirty people from Cloraenceau. Our social ovont this year was the St. Valentine's* Dance, carried out with red and white decorations. After a comparatively calm year, otherwise, the sixty—four of us were ready to welcome our active upper­ classman years.

The Junior year was filled with several outstanding activi­ ties.

Our dramatic presentation that year was "The Yollow Shadow", a nystery play in which members of the class showed their skill in being ghosts and villains. The formal under­ taking of our high school career, however, was the JuniorSenior Banquet and Prom, held on May twenty-first and carried out with Spanish decorations, food, and favors. In addition to these activities, put on exclusively by the Juniors, many members of this class participated in the school operetta, "Rings in the Sawdust". Having now done all in our power as juniors, we finally reached the height of our ambition------the Senior Year.

The Year 1933-1934 arrived and with the rank of Senior for the forty-four students new in our class. This was the big year----full of responsibilities and activities. The Sen­ ior participation in "Be An Optimist", in the Glee Club con­ cert, and in "Submerged" evinced much talent as well as in­ terest in school life. The Alchemist, too, was published by the Senior Glass and represents a permanent record of our work in the history of C.H.S. By this time we needed a rest, so we took it. On April thirtieth, wo spont our "ditch day" at Camp Old Glory.

After the grand fihale, the hustle and bustle of being pro­ perly graduated, we look over the record of our past four years with pardonable pride.

Wo are exceptionally proud of our class, not only because of what it has accomplished, but also because of the co-operation arxl fine sportsmanship of the members themselves.

JUNIOR CLASS ACTIVITIES

Beginning the school year, the Junior class contained for­ ty-eight members9 but at the close of the term, only forty remained. Not daunted by this loss, the Juniors gave a good account of themselves in music, athletics, dramatics, and in general school activities.

Margaret Ann Hagius accompanied all Glee Club activities and well proved her worth to the school* Alma Riley won first place as woman’s high voice soloist in the Northern Arizona contest* In dramot ics,the Juniors showed their ability in a Thanks­ giving program presented before the Forum on November 29th* More sure of themselves, and brilliantly directed by Miss Blanche E. Rayle, they proscntod "Philip for Short" in the Clark Memorial Auditorium on December 8th* Giving further proof of its talented membership, the Junior Class presented Preston Powell who took part in "Submerged" a very dramatic one act ploy,dirocted by Miss Raylo,given in connection with the Musical Concert.

The Junior Class members may indeed bo proud of their ath­ letic ranking as Coach Lunceford found good mator.ial in Esau Castill*., Philip Toralez, Joe Lessard, Hugo Liljeriberg,Tommy Jones, George Benatz, John Modigovich, and Tony Minerich in football and basketball* To insure financial stability for the Junior Prom prepara­ tions, the Junior Class sponsored a ,,Talkie" given at the Rialto Theater in Cottonwood on April 23 and 24. "Chance at Heaven" was enjoyed by those attending and a satisfying pro­ fit was realized* The Prom was effectually carried out with a circus setting and the decorations and entertainment gave everybody a good reason for enjoying himself* The circus plan adopted, tho animals, trapeze artists, tent-like decorations galloons and pink lemonade helped create an atmosphere of reality* This successful year for the Juniors would not have been possible were it not for the splendid co-operation shown by the class members and the faculty* Mr* Hey, our sponsor, gave much af his time and labor to our class activities.

SOPHOMCRE ACTIVITIES This year the Clarkdale Sophomore Class of twenty-five members was joined by twenty-four graduates of Cleraenceau, making the total forty-nine students# The sophomores this year have not contributed as many activities as they would have liked, because they have been saving funds for a successful prom in the junior year# Under the sponsorship of Mr# Gruver, the class gave a combined Washington and Lincoln program on February sixteenth.

TOBSHMEW ACTIVITIES An unusually small Freshmen Class entered Clarkdale High in 1933. During the year it has been ably sponsored fcy Miss Margaret Hedderman.

The haughty-and-always-to-be-obeyed Seniors soon gave the Ten Commandments to the verdant underclassmen,and for sever­ al days, the rest of the school enjoyed seeing the Frosh bqps with pants rolled up, girls wearing dresses on backwards and wearing no make-up, and boys with uncombed hair. 7fliat the class lacked in size it made up for in spirit.This was shown by the excellent work done in giving the"C"its annual white­ wash bath.

September fifteenth, the Seniors entertained the Freshmen unquestat the traditional reception where the Frosh were ionably initiated. From that time they were deemed worthy of recognition as students of Clarkdale High School.

The one public effort of the Freshmen Class was a Christmas program in Forum. This program consisted of a dramatization several of "Bird1 s Christmas Carol" and the rendering of suitable numbers by the Glee Club.

Our Sophomore year is dawning. Let us hope that our FresBfcmen year has prepared us for a happy and useful participation in the life and hopes of Clarkdale High School.

The high school mixed chorus has provided much of the community entertainment during the past year.The Women’s Club, the Kiwanis Club, and the high school forum have all had the pleasure of hearing this well-trained group ensem­ ble and in part. .At the Christmas season, the chorus also provided special music#

Perhaps their most outstanding event of the year was the winning of honors in the Northern Arizona Music Contest in April. Entrios were made in girl's high voice, girls* trio girls* glee club,piano solo, and men's quartet. Out of the five divisions entered, Clarkdale took three first places.

Mary Sullivan,Bonnie Parsons,and Alma Riley received first place in the girls' trio entry, while Alma also took first in girl's high voice. Although the boys did not roceive an award, tho girls' glee club took first place as a group Hazel Cox, a former Clarkdalc music studont,roceivod third place with her piano solo. Margaret Ann Hagius should also rocoivc coraraondation as a piano soloist, although she was not given an award in the contest. Miss Florence Bavey* s untiring efforts made those awards possible,and tho chorus is very grateful for her sponsorship during the year that has passed. Margaret Ann Hagius deserves credit also as an accompaniest.

On May 4, the mixed chorus gave a special musical proA feature of the gram in place of its annual operatta. evening was a one-act play, "Submerged", directed by Miss Rayle's dramatic group.Tho cast was composed of six boys.

Forum, for the purpose of carrying on all student enterprises with the cooperation and under tho supervision of the faculty.”

This briof statement, taken from the foreword of tho Forum Constitution, clearly summarizes tho principles which are behind this organization. The primary objoct of tho organization Forum is to sorve as a student cooperative rather than as a student self-governing body. Its principal On function is the conducting of periodical assemblies, these occasions, some kind of social, literary, or dramatic entertainment is usually presented. These programs natur­ al ly stimulate the students* interest in the Forum, and as a result,it has become the custom for each class to present at least one Forum program during tho year.Other activities different sponsored by the Forum are school dances and kinds of student and interclass competition.

The principles upon which tho Forum is conducted wore first introduced in 1929. The Forum v/as permanently estab­ lished as a student organization the following year, when a constitution was adopted. Prior to 1929, a quasi-form of our present organization existed, but the present Forum dates back to the reorganization of the original body in 1929. Since then, many improvements have been made and the students* privileges have been increased.

The earliest record of a student paper in Clarkdale High is that of an issu9 printed in September 1924. This paper was edited under the name of f,The Loud Speaker1' ,and a sec­ ond number appeared in Ko^smber of the same year. Any sub­ sequent issues which may have been printed have since been lost, but it is certain that "The Lnv-d Speaker" was pub­ lished for only a brief period* It was not until after a lapse of nearly eight yvaro that the students again took an interest in such a publication. In 193?., Fiojrd Allen and Fred Winkler, together with several other students ^un­ dertook to edit a school paper. Appearing first as "The Wolf Weekly" and later as "The Wolf Howl"rthis publication became a definite feature in the school's extra-curricular program# As the name indicates, it was originally printed every week, but because of the small circulation and the desire to improve the paper, publication interval was ex­ tended to three weeks. In 1933,Floyd Allen and Alvin Reese continued as post-graduates to edit this paper in co-oper­ ation with a select staff of students. In 1934, "The Wolf Howl" became a student publication exclusively. Edited en­ tirely by undergraduates, it has continued with the policy of its founders: "Every issue a better issue", until now it ranks among the first of its class.

In the endeavor to make a diversified and an interesting paper,the editors have tried to include a section for each division of student interest. Robert Huntington, a senior, took the part of Henry in place of Preston Powell, who was taken to the hospital for an operation shortly after rehearsals had begun.

The plot of the play involved tho efforts of Betty and Phillip to get Henry to consent to their marriage. Com­ plications, that developed as the story unfolded, kept the audience in constant excitement during the evening’s entertainment.

It was coldf grey dawn, November 7, 1917. On the east­ ern horizon, a thin streak of color foretold the sun* s as­ cension* From tha west came the faint reports of rifle fire interrupted by the occasional,angry rat-a-tat of a machine gun. On the edge of the little town of Corcieux, Franco, a troop of French soldiers was still sleeping. The firing died down a little. A cock crowed and in a nearby stable a horse neighed. Then came the sharp bark of an officer issuing or­ ders. A group of soldiers roundod the corner of a building* They marched in two parallel files and between their lines there walked a solitary figure. Coming to a point at the for ond of the wall, the company halted. The unpleasantness of their mission weighed upon the men and none of them spoke* Only the brusque commands of the officer broke the silence* The company formed a single line at some distance from the wall, facing it. Each man boro a riflo* Franz H--was facing a firing squad because he was a spy in the servico of the German army. Years--- many, many years before, as a tousle-headed youngster he had been thus exe­ cuted,only thon the firing squad had been less in earnest* Instoad of cold steel rifles tho weapons had been crooked sticks which were waved with accompanying lusty shouts of bangi bangi At the mental picture of that early experience a grim smile crossed Franz's face* Thon ho was jerked back to the present by the crisp order, f,Company,aiml,, Franz sudden­ ly realized that he was looking into the mouths of six riflo barrels* Running his eye along each of the guns ho met the eyes of his executioners* Tho re was a pair of blue eyes, lined at the corners from much laughing, but they were now cold and unblinking; the re was a pair of sad brown eyes .Sure­ ly this man would not shoot a brother. Tho next wero gray, grim and expressionless. And so on down the line Franz stud­ ied each in turn, wondering-what each was thinking* Then his thoughts turned back to the guns. Which was loaded? Only one contained tho fatal charge. Who would fire it? Would it come from that big man with the black board and the ferocious, bloodshot eyes, or from that little fellow with the sneaky, cruel expression? No, probably the sad, brown-eyed fellow would fire it* That is the Irony of life* Tho suspense was becoming unbearable. Would they never fire? A wild desiro to scream possessed him*A horse v/hinnied softly on the other side of tho wall# The sound relaxed his nerves and his mind again floated back to scenes in his youth.There was the tim®

For ana instant his body stiffened, and in that split second his ruptured brain framed escape.

He felt a soft thump as something hit his forehead. Oh, it was only a piece of plaster from the wall. The gunner had missed, the bullet hitting the wall to the right. That was what had thrown the piece of plaster. Franz whirlod,and plac­ ing his hand on the top of the wall, vaulted over. He land­ ed in a court yard in tho contor of which stood a sleek young mare, saddlod and bridled. Angry curses broke from the soldiors on the other side of tho wall. Y/ith a bound Frnnz was in the saddle. As his heels dug into her sides, the maro cloarod tho gate and galloped down tho road. Tho soldiers were hot in pursuit. The road was bocoming stoepor. Tho horse was having a hard time keeping her footing. Now tho road pointed almost strai^it dc*m.

The maro had slippod. Ho was falling, falling...............

A trickle of blood ran from a neat, round bullot holo in tho center of his forehead.

One cold Januaiy morning a dishevelled, bearded, dirty Shivering and little man walked out of the city jail, frightened, he strolled down the street, He had been locked up for several days on a minor charge, and now he had been ordered to leave the city within eight hours.

While he was pondering on some way to leave, a large sedan drove up to the curb. He was staring into the muz­ zle of a machine gun.

"Hop in, buddy," said a gruff voice.

He obeyed and was soon speeding acroes the country on the way to Hollywood, with a band of desperate criminals, who, wishing to take no chances, planned to use him as a tool. He was kept blind-folded at all times when they were unmasked.

A v/eek later, the little man looking more frightened He was than ever, was entering a large Hollywood home, urged on by the prodding of a gun in his back. He had been given specific information as to the location of a large number of valuable jewels which he was to obtain and hand over to his captors. After considerable trouble he obtain­ ed the loot and, as it was midnight, expected to be unseen.

Just as he left the small room where the jewels had been kept, he encountered a wrinkled old servent on his way to his quarters.

The thief had no weapon so he fled as quickly as pos­ sible, but he knew he had been plainly seen and could be identified.

He turned the jewels over to his captors who gave him enou^i money to buy several meals and told him to keep quiet.

Knowing he had been recognized, the little man felt constantly in danger of being picked up by the police. One day he was walking through the tougher section of the city when he noticed that he was being followed. He started to run, but the man behind caught up and laid a heavy hand on his shoulder.

"We want you in the movies; we*re looking for new faces."

"Sure," said the little man.

COHBMTS BY THE COACH The 1933 season was rather too dismal to bear close scrutiny.

Lack of experienced material and a new system and f coach combined held us down.

The season v/as opened with a win over Gilbert, which was the result of an intercepted pass by Luis Orrantia, and a fine last-half stand against the all-state Clare, who nearly ran us rugged on reverses.

The next game v/as dropped to Flagstaff, 12-6, and if over we should have won a game,that was the one. The Wolves roll­ ed off some four-hundred-fifty yards from scrimmage against a third as much yardage for Flagstaff and had their score inside the first four minutes.

Two smoothly handled passes gave Flagstaff the game. The gang shoved power—lots of itbut lack of experience.

The next gome v/as ono in which the score speaks for it­ self—Winslow 33; Wolves, 0. Everything attempted was wrong, and certainly it was not a jubilant gang that came home that night.

The Prescott game was close, 15-13, and a blocked punt v/as the deciding factor. Again, power in spurts was avail­ the able, but the defense was ragged and unable to check Badger's scoring.

The lost game v/as dropped to a much-superior Jerome team, 16-0. Ono day the worm v/ill turn, however, and then look out l They fought the Muckers throughout, although hopelessly outclassed, and made the game so interesting that the drunken rowdies on the sidelines didn’t attract the usual amount of attention.

Prospects for 1934 are better with L. George, Liljenborg, Perez, McDonald, Medina# Benatz, Lessard, and Medigovich available as a nucleous for a new team.

Reports on Football Gaines The football season opened very well for Clarkdale. Our gridiron men defeated Gilbert here, the Wolf offense show­ ing remarkable ability# On meeting the Flagstaff eleven, our defense weakened, and the Eagles wont homo victorious# On the twenty-first of October tho Wolf team went to bat­ tle Winslow at Winslow. Many passes were incomplete, and Win­ slow scorned to score by completing passes. This success won them the game.

A very good game, the best in the season, was staged when our Wolves met the Badgers from over the hill. During tho game, tho ball did not pass the goal linos many times; but although our boys tried thoir best, they were defeated.

On Armistice Day, the kick-off was made amid cheers and yells as Clarkdale and Jerome started the battle of might# The spirit of rivalry, always shown between Jerome and Clark­ dale, was evident again# The Mucker eleven was too tall and heavy for the Clarkdale team and had many more experienced players. Those who saw the game know well enough that our men tried their best and played in a fair, honest way.

This is a game on fouls, more points are being made on foul shots than on field goals. The last half goes on with both sides scoring, and the game is getting more and more interesting> The audience arises go get a better view. Orrantia and Mac Donald are scoring, while Huntington and Castillo are showing us the way to play the defensive side. During the third quarter, Jerome takes the lead and holds it to the end. We lose this game, but this is the best game our men have played; and now, confident in giving better shows, they are ready for newcoming battles.

According to the critics of Northern Arizona, this game was the evenest and most brilliant ever staged on the Clarkdale basket ball court. Clarkdale scores first and is ahead on the first half by six points. During the third quarter, the Badgers catch up, and through failure in field shots Clarkdale is left behind by Prescott. Although we lose, we see more improvement and better playing this time.

Flagstaff to compete in tho Northern Arizona Basketball Tournament. On the first bracket, Clarkdale defeats Winslow 21-20; this qualifies us to enter the semi-finals against Flagstaff who defeat us and later defeat Jerome for the Northern Arizona championship.

INTRAMURAL BASKETBALL We held our third annual basketball games and tournament again this year under the direction of Adolph Orrantia. A very good response was made by the boys to Mr. Orrantia*s first call, and much ability and fight were shown on the basketball floor* The teams were divided into classes A. and B according to size and ability. There wore six teams under Class A and four under Class B. CLASS A - Porfirio Duran* s team defeated the team coached

by Mongini in the first bracket.

The next teams playing were those trained by Esau Castillo and John Medigovich.

The teams of Duran and Medigovich contested in the semifi­ nals; the team of the former won. From the lov/or bracket, Don McDonald* s five came up with a victoiy against the men under Louis Orrantia and played that team under Porfirio on Friday, March 9, for the championship. Porfirio*s team chalked the victory.

CLASS B - In the first Class B game, Jock Gilford’s team won over that of Luis Alvillar. The team under D.Gassaway defeated Richard Holly’s team and contested against Jock Gilford’s for the championship. The honor was taken by the Gilford quintet with a veiy close score*

This year a basketball team under the coaching of Adolph Orrantia was organized by the junior high boys* Four games were played during the season* The boys wanned up by beating Jerome at Jerome in their first game. On February tenth,we were defeated at Clemenceau on the Clemenceau court* After Coach Orrantia had given us another week of hard drilling,we again defeated Jerome* 3Jhe last game of the season was played on February twenty-fourth when Clarkdale defeated Clemenceau here by a largo margin* We look forward to another junior high team next year; and having such good material. Coach Orrantia feels confident in piloting a winning team.

k Troop 17 Troop 17 of Clarkdale "began its activities for the year in November 1933. That month the troup attended a Court of Honor held in Jerome.

Weekend hikes to various places in the surrounding: coun­ try were taken regularly during the year. Relative to this phase of activity, "Outing in Scouting", was an enjoyable three-day camping trip in the "old faithful"school bus to Sherman’s Ranch.

.Another Court of Honor was held in Clarkdale in February* It was very well attended.

In a message by radio from President Roosevelt to the Scouts, he requested each troop to do a National Good Turn by collecting old clothing and furniture for relief purpo­ ses. Troop 17 responded by gathering a truckload of cloth­ ing in good condition.

This clothing was turned over to Mrs. Lavers for distribution.

The high-light in this year’s activities for the Scouts Field was the trip to Phoenix to compete in the Greenway Meet. Troop 17 won one first place with the fire-building team, which was composed of Jock Gilford and Loren George.

The G,A,A. has charge of all interclass sports, such as bas­ ketball, volleyball, tennis, baseball, and swimming* Every girl in this organization is striving toward a goal, which is achieved by earning one thousand points in different competitive sports. When she receives the required number of points, she is entitled to a letter ,,CM, of which she can well be the proud possessor, A girl who makes the class team in any sport receives one hundred twenty-five points, and twenty-five additional points are given if she makes the var­ sity team.

Basketball In the Interclass Basketball Tournament, the senior class emerged victorious after much hard fighting. The game with Camp Verde, which the Clarkdalo girls won, was a very fast and exciting game.

Volleyball Volleyball was also played with great enthusiasm, No games were scheduled with Camp Verde or Jerome, so an interclass tournament was held, A new method, the Round Robin TournaTh© freshmen girls won the Interclass Cham— ment v/as used, pionship.
