SENIOR CLASS HISTORY The class of 1932 made its first appearance on September 5, 1919. On that day eight children could be seen walking unwillingly to school. These same eight., charter members of our class, are with us todav after twelve years of the most enjoyable experiences tocgethcr. They were: Mary Golden, Aletha Wait, Inez Florez, Billy Kuzell, who was later to be the valedictorian of our class and an excellent speaker; Alvin Reese, who was later to run over all opponents in athletics: Bruno Rczzonico, who was later to be one of the best football guards in Clarkdale athletic history; Victor Sanchez; and Dick Hughes, who was later 1o become a very good tennis and golf player.

These same eight spent their first two school years without a new mem­ ber: however, in our third year we were very pleased to accept Ed Stevens, of Phoenix, as a. member of our class. On entering the fourth grade we were delighted to sec three new faces in our room. One boy said that his name was LaVerne Bentley. Little did we realize that six years hence this same boy would be tearing opponents apart on the football field. The tall dignified boy said his name was Gordon Luepke and that he came from Los Angeles. We soon found out that he was no slouch when it came to playing the piano. This boy was also to become a basketball player and the salutatorian of our class. The new girl was Ramona Rielly, who skipped the grade below us. Six years later that same girl could bo seen wedding a tennis racket with wonderful skill. Tn the fifth grade Dorothv ITogc decided she would rather join us than stay in Phoenix, consequently we had a new member. Tn the sixth year Wilton Washer, of Phoenix, ioined our class. If we wanted our car fixed, all we had to do was to call on Wilton. The girls were the first to notice the blond boy who joined us in the seventh grade. Although he was very bashful he finally told us that his name was Novian Anderson and that he came from Morcnci.

This same boy later became a very good basketball guard.

By the time we were full-fledged Freshmen our enrollment had increased from the original eight to fifteen. The first dream in our approach to an education had been realized. We had spent many happy years together and had prospects for many more. At last we were Freshmen, a little bit green but not too green. Tn this year, Frank, better known as “Suitcase” Avis, entered our class as a transfer from Clemcnccau. Louise Humbert and Barbara Chick entered from Cornville. We made our first public appearance when we gave the St. Patrick’s dance. We don’t like to boast but we feel sure that it was a success. Tn our Sophomore year a host of boys and girls joined the class to add honor and success to its name. They were the transfers from Clemcnccau! They were: Leo Thompson, who was to make a name for himself in athletics; Dan Womack, football athlete; Tony Stadclman, basketball and track man; Mike Mcdigovich, the “Galloping Ghost” of the gridiron: Edward Hood, famous football hero: Lynn Gano; Lonney Fergus, a very good football center; Ralph Durnez; Edna Webb, our artist and editorial writer; Eros Valazza, Editor of the “Alchemist”, and holder of other high offices; Ollie Simpson; Ellen Shanahan, of dramatic ability: Vivian Liljenberg; Rachel Becchetti, our accomplished artist on the accordion; and Gladys Arnold. We were extremely happy to have these new classmates with us and we looked Jorward to three of the happiest and most profitable years of our lives.

SENIOR CLASS HISTORY In the Junior year Johnny Wicker joined us. Florence Baker and William Banders decided that our class was better than that of our predecessors and enrolled in our class. William, hotter known as “Big Bill”, was a star football athlete. For our Junior Class Play, we presented “Poor Nut”. In May of our Junior year, after three months of hard work, we sponsored the Prom, and again we say that we feel it was a decided success.

Norman Jackson decided to graduate with us, so he bid adieu to Camp Verde. Arl Ragle and Reba York found our class their choice, and we arc glad that they decided so wisely. This year we presented “Three Live Ghosts” as our last public appearance before Class Night. Like all other presentations it was a success. As Seniors we were hosts and hostesses at the Senior Hop. The ballroom of a yacht was the scene. Of course it wasn’t a real yacht but the high school auditorium greatlv resembled a yacht ballroom.

On April 27 the school seemed deserted. Whv was this? The Seniors were out for “Ditch Day”. Scdona was the scene of much merriment, and we all agree that it was the best “Ditch Day” ever. Of course the Seniors won the inter-class track tournament without a struggle.

We wish to take this opportunity to thank Miss Alice Watson who has so faithfully and untiringly guided us through our four years of high school.

We also wish to thank Mr. Jones and every teacher in school who has helped us in any way. To the public we wish to extend our appreciation for the undivided interest it has shown in any tasks we have undertaken.

We have reached the second stage of our education. It is with reluctance and sorrow that we bid good-bye to good old C. IT. S. and tO^ouv many happy days spent there together.

To all the students of Clarkdalc High School we say not good-bye but “Adieu”.

Dorothy Jakle—Class Sponsor ACTIVITIES

The majority of the members of this year’s Junior Class are not residents of Clarkdale; however, their splendid co-operative spirit and loyal support have made this one of the most active and important classes in Clarkdale High School.

The Junior Play, “Daddies”, was given unusually good support this year.

The excellent co-operation of the Junior Class members helped to make this play a great success. Although before the presentation of the play few had taken an active part in dramatic productions, many good actors were found among the members of the class.

The Junior Forum Program was given on Friday, February twentysix. As George Washington’s birthday was just a few days past, it was de­ cided to dedicate the program to the commemoration of his life. The presenta­ tion included a sketch of the life of Washington, his original hatchet story, and a play depicting how he and Martha would act if they were suddenly brought to life.

Three Juniors held Forum offices during the year, and many members of the class were on the squads for the different athletic activities in which Clarkdale High School participated.

The Sophomore Class is by far the largest high school class in the history of Clarkdale High School.

Needless to say, from this large class has come much talent which has added greatly to school activities this year. The Class is proud of the able athletic participation, not only of Emelio Mongini in Football and Ed Torrez in basketball, but also of the many Sophomore members of the various athletic squads, who will doubtless lie outstanding players in future years/ The girls, too, were active in athletics, winning the inter-class volleyball and basketball championships.

It is noteworthy that alnnit one-half of the solo parts for the operetta, ‘‘Oh Doctor!”, were taken by Sophomores. Hazel Cox and Avis Landers were outstanding as accompanists for many of the musical events of the year.

Scholarship also was not lacking in this large class, in fact, the Sophomores were well represented on the Honor Roll during the entire year.

The Sophomores gave the student body a leap year dance on February 26, 1932. The novelty of tbn scheme contributed much towards making the dance a huge success.

The excellent co-operation of the Clemenccau students, both during their period of initiation and during the remainder of the year, together with the excellent class spirit exhibited by the entire class arc to be commended.

We ate our onion at the Frosh Reception without a murmur; we wore green ribbons in our hair; we washed windows and swept sidewalks; we even cleaned football fields, all at the “polite request’ ’of the Seniors.

The Forum, or Student Body Assembly, is the largest and most active organization in the school. Every student in the high school and in the seventh and eighth grades is a member, and every teacher attends the weekly meetings and may take an active part in the discussion.

The objectives of Forum are: to capitalize on the desire of students to group together; the widening and deepening of pupil intrests; the motivation and enrichment of school work; the development in the pupil and in the school of worthy ideals of service; and, the more complete acquaintance of teacher and pupil.

Officers are chosen at a school election and can hold the same office for only one semester. The President is a Senior, the Vice President a Junior, the Secretary either a Senior or a Junior, the Treasurer a Sophomore, and the Sergeant-at-arms a Freshman.

Each class, including the seventh and eighth grades, has a representative on the Student Council, a committee which acts in an advisory capacity on all

important legislation initiated at regular meetings.

There are three standing committees with Faculty Chairmen; they are the Athletic Committee, the Social Committee, and the Literary and Program Committee. The purpose of the Athletic Committee is to promote inter-mural athletics for both boys and girls. The Social Committee has charge of all social functions sponsored by the Forum. The Literary and Program Committee is responsible for the weekly programs of entertainment in Forum meetings.

THE FORUM It is in Forum meetings that all matters pertinent to the entire school arc discussed. Group singing and yell practice are principal parts ol the meetmgs, especially during the fall and winter. Once each six weeks the program is conducted as an Honor Roll Assembly to honor those students whose aver­ age in scholastic work is 3.5 or better. On such occasions a speaker is usually invited to give some sort of an instructive talk to the assembly.

This year the Forum has been active in sponsoring several dances and an inter-mural basketball tournament.

It is safe to say that the Forum enjoyed more and better programs this year than it did at any time in the past, and there is every indication that next year's Forum will he even better in this respect.

THE WOLF WEEKLY This year, for the first time, Clarkdale High School has had a regular weekly newspaper.

Due to the efforts of Fred Winkler and Floyd Allen, post-graduate stud­ ents, the paper was started during the second semester. Each week on Friday the paper, which is mimeographed, usually four or five sheets in length, is published and sold to the students and teachers for one cent a copy. Under an attractive emblem of two wolf heads, on the first page, is usually found an editorial and two articles of importance which are continued on succeeding pages. A section devoted to personal items, a joke section, a scandal sheet”, a “strange as it may seem” paragraph, and a sport page are the usual interest­ ing divisions of the paper.

Demonstrating a splendid co-operative spirit, many of the local business firms have subscribed for advertising space and thus have done much to insure the success of the paper.

Miss Bolinger is the advisor and a frequent contributor to the “Wolf”.

This year the paper has been exceedingly successful and well received by the student body and it is the earnst intention of the staff and the desire ol the student body that this interesting little news organ be continued and improved upon in succeeding years.

A selective group of students, realizing the value of debate and public speaking in their present scholastic activities and as a preparatory step toward tlie development of voice, exnression, poise, dignity, and case of manner in later life, .joined the Debate Club this year.

Thi' forensic group met but twice a month, on the second and fourth Wednesdays. Time was altogether too limited for it to be possible to accomplish or nearly to accomplish all the results desired, but it is to be hoped that the interest evidenced thus far by the club members will be carried on to furition next vear.

The Debate Team was composed of the “veteran” debaters. William Kuzell and Gordon Luepkc. both of whom are speakers of considerable ability.

Clarkdalc High School mnv feel justifiably proud of the two young men who represented her so creditably in upholding the question:—“Resolved. That tlm several states should enact, legislation for compulsory unemployment insurance. »; Ellen Shanahan was alternate on the team.

Because of the economic pronr,,J'ni being practiced throughout Arizona, no state contest was held this vear. Tips was much regretted by Clarkdnle High for the debaters earnestly desired a chance to win the state honor. The three students comprising the team will graduate in June, and their loss to the Debate Club will be keenly felt.

The annual Forum program given by the Club was presented on April 29. when Robert Greenwood and Tola White upheld the Affirmative and Ellen Shanahan and Robert Huntington, the Negative of a semi-serious debate on the question:—“Resolved, that it is better to be a little frog in a big puddle than a big frog in a little puddle, The influence of environment was the keynote of this clever debate.

Miss Blanche E. Raylc. member of two Honorary Debating Societies, is sponsor and coach of the Debate Club and deserves much credit for her un­ tiring efforts to produce, a championship debate team and to encourage debat­ ing among the members of the club who were not. members of the regular team.

HISTORY

The Future Craftsmen of Arizona, as an organization, was founded at the annual meeting of the Trade and Industrial Teachers and Supervisors of Arizona, at Prescott on August 28. 1931. with the idea that individual clubs be formed bv the different, Trade Classes throughout the state.

The Auto Mechanics Class of Clarkdale High School organized its club on October 20. 1931.

The object of the F. C. A. is to create a better understanding; between the T. & I. classes in the state, to raise the standard of trade training and create an interest in trade classes of the state, to participate in the different social, scholastic, and athletic activities of the school, and to encourage an interest among the trades of the community in the different trade classes.

The Girl Reserve organization, under the auspices oi‘ the Women’s Club, has been active tor a period ot eight years.

The school authorities have recognized the value oil the Girl Reserve or­ ganization and have accorded it a place among the regularly instituted extra­ curricular activities.

The Girl Reserves have earned money by sponsoring the following: food sales, candy sales, check room service, and ticket sales. The community has made all ot these activities possible by supporting everything which the Girl Reserve group undertakes.

The purpose of the Girl Reserves is to create a better feeling among girls”. The “Golden Rule” is held foremost in their minds—“Do Unto Others As You Would Have Them Do Unto You. A goal towards which all the girls work is the conference held at Granite Dells, near Prescott, during the summer. Only four girls are allowed to repre­ sent each club; therefore, it is an honor to be able to say you have attended camp.

One of the many dances of the year was given by the Girl Reserves on March 23, and all who attended enjoyed it. One of the interesting Forum pro­ grams was presented by the Girl Reserves on April 22.

The Girl Reserves wish to express their extreme appreciation to the Women’s Club and to Miss Howell and Miss Iledderman, tneir sponsors, who have advanced the interests of the club by their unselfish efforts.

ACTIVITIES

The Dramatic Club is composed of students from the high school who are interested in different phases of Dramatics. The membership of the club is definitely limited to thirty members, twenty-five of whom are Juniors and Seniors; the remaining five being honorary members who are selected from the upper quarter of the Sophomore Class during the last six-week period of the term.

The club meets twice monthly in school time and almost every month it has a social meeting in the evening.

In each regular meeting a definite program is presented. An effort is made to occasionally obtain a speaker on some subjcet pertinent to dramatics.

The fact that the membership is definitely limited and that the applicants for membership must meet certain specifications makes membership in this or­ ganization something worth while.

This year, because the annual speech and one-act play contests at Flag­ staff were not held, the dramatic activities of the club have been confined to programs in regular meetings and to a program which was given in Forum.

When producing one-act plays_i'or practice, almost all the work, including directing, make-up, and stage carpentry and lighting, is done by the club members themselves.

At the beginning of the school year students of Spanish met for the pur­ pose of re-organizing the Spanish Club. At this meetingg the phrase “La Cuesta”, meaning “The Hill” was adopted by the group as the name of the organization.

To secure membership in the club one must have a passing grade in Span­ ish. Those students who have had courses in Spanish in past years and who are at present enrolled in the school are also allowed to belong to the club.

The purpose of the club is three-fold, to give the student a broader knowledge of the Spanish language, to promote interest in the study of Span­ ish by discussing various phases of the language, and for the betterment of social gatherings.

The club, among other things, sponsored one of the many successful dances which were given during the winter.

FOOTBALL 1931 saw the Wolves get back to normalcy. After a very disasterous 1930 season, they won four, lost two and tied one game this season.

The team played a good brand of ball, especially on the defense. An in­ experienced quarterback kept the Wolves from many scores. Although tying Flagstaff and losing to Prescott, the Wolves held large margins in first downs, but a team must get across that old goal line to win games and that’s what was wanting at times.

The old “Jinx of Hard Luck” seemed to hover over the local camp pretty much of the time. Bentley, Fergus, Rczzonico, Castillo, and Reese were caught in his net. Reese broke his leg a week before the Prescott game, which was played on his birthday, and how he might have celebrated!

The victory over Jerome was especially sweet since the Muckers defeated the Wolves 6-0 in 1930, the first time since 1926.

This was Dan’s second year on the Varsity line. He was consistent and all he needed was someone to anger him.

The pmt edition of the “Milkman” was considered the outstanding lineman in Northern Anzona football history by many. He couldn't be stopped defensively. It was Bruno’s second year.

‘Snort” made his letter for the first time this year. His drive was second to none on the squad. His speed and all-round playing made him a real threat at all times. Watch him go in 1932.

End. This was his first year of Varsty competition and he gave a good account of himself. He was a good pass receiver and a good tackier.

MONGINI, EMILIO (FAT) —(Sophomore) 5 ft. 10! in.—235 lbs. too much This was the quart edition of the “Dairymen” and truly he was . edition for his opponents. One of the best and most consistent players ever developed at C. H. S. All-Northern in 1931. Second year on Varsity.

TORALEZ, PHILIP—(Freshman)—5 ft. 9 in.—160 lbs.

“Jim Thorpe” made a good impression this season as a fullback and as a running guard. His ease and grace mark him as the potential star for the Wolf backfield in 1932.

CASTILLO, ESAU—(Freshman)—5 ft. 9 in.—160 lbs.

This chunk of humanity doesn’t realize his own possibilities. His speed and physical proportions made him a real Wolf for his first year.

Manager.

KUZELL, WILLIAM—(Senior) Billy has served very efficiently as manager for two seasons and his loss will be felt as much as that of any player on the team. He did everything willing­ ly and correctly.

NUMERAL MEN An innovation at C. H. S. this year was the awarding: of class numerals (3-inch Chenille, alternating Maroon and White) to candidates who made the souad and were present and eligible for more than 70% of practice sessions.

Due to a broken leg received in the Wolf-Indian football game, the season was half over before Reese was able to take part in any game. The night of his return Luepke took chickenpox and missed three or four games, including the games against Winslow and Williams. On the northern trip Anderson was unable to play due to “auto-intoxication”, and Torrez was counted “out” by the Winslow official two minutes after the starting whistle for reputed pugi­ listic efforts. All these clouds failed to shut out the brightness of the season when the Wolves ate up the Jerome Muckers in both games of the season.

This made it three straight victories over them for the year, and were they sweet? The Muckers haven’t defeated the Wolves in basketball since January, 1928, when they scored a 21-18 victory in the first game of the season.

BASKETBALL

BENTLEY, LaVERNE (BUSTER) —(Senior) Guard.

This was the third year of Varsity play for this giant on defense. Twice he made Second All-State and once All-Northern, the only time he participated in the North. He was selected captain by his mates. His shoes will be hard to fill for more reasons than one.

LUEPKE, GORDON (OTTO) —(Senior) Center.

“Otto” failed to be outjumped again this year. His all-round work made him a valuable asset. He was sorely missed in the Winslow and Williams contests.

THOMPSON, LEO—(Senior) Forward.

He played most of the time when Reese was out and gave a good account of himself. He was a good shot.

Guard.

STADELMAN, TONY (DUTCH) —(Senior) Tony was one of the most aggressive players on the squad. He was every­ where at the same time. This was his only Varsity year.

ANDERSON. NOVIAN (SWEDE) —(Senior) “Swede” placed a verv ^ood defensive game for his first and last year on the Varsity. He was a bit erratic on the offense, but he never quit fighting.

REESE. ALVTN (JIMMER) —(Senior) He was the spark of the offense and defense. His speed was slightly impeded this season by an iniury, but at that, he was by far the fastest man seen in action this season.

“Looie” nlnved a good game when called upon for action. He is a Junior and should be a good man next year. A fair shot and fast.

He has played regularly fov two seasons and is only a Sophomore. What a man he should turn out to be! One of the best shots in the North and clever with the ball, too. Captain for 1933.

HUGHES.. RICHARD (DICK-SHELLY) —(Senior) . , Dick was a very willing and efficient officer. He did much to see that players and spectators were comfortable.

TENNIS The Tennis Team this year was com nosed of Alvin Reese, Dick Hughes. Billy (iil lord, Norman Jackson, Walter Kent, Philip Crookham, and Robert Greenwood. Reese and Hughes are four-year lettermen.

There were three meets held this year. Two were with Je­ rome Muckers, and one with the J e r o m e Town Team. The Wolves could never get their stride in any game. The results were: First Match 2 4 Clarkdale.

GOLF The 1931 Golf Team, which was composed of Alvin Reese, Dick Hughes, Billy Kuzell and Gordon Luepke, was the first Golf Team in the history of the school. Three matches were held with Prescott, resulting in three victories for C. H. S. Alvin Reese and Dick Hughes parti­ cipated in the State Golf Tour­ nament a* th? Greenway Field Meet in Phoenix. Another team composed of Dick Hughes and Billy Kuzell took second place in the Northern Arizona High School Golf Tournament at Flagstaff in which five high schools were represented. Mr. E. M. Gruver was the coach.

TRACK The 1931 County Track Meet was held for the first time in several years at Clarkdale. Prescott won the meet by a large majority. Clarkdale had only six men competing. Each placed in the meet. Men placing were:

Frank Abbott, Senior—Second in javelin.

Marvin Landers, Senior—Tied for third in broad jump.

Norman Rhodes, Sophomore—Third in high hurdles, second in low hurdles.

LaVerne Bentley, Junior—First in discus, third in low hurdles.

Malcom Webb, Sophomore—Second in mile and half-mile.

Leo Thompson, Junior—Tied for third in pole vault.

There was only one local meet held. This was held with Camp Verde at Clarkdale. The Clarkdale Wolves came out with an easy victory, although the Camp Verde team showed much fight. West and Fraley were the stars for the Camp Verde Cowboys, while Rhodes, Bentley and Webb starred for the Wolves.

GIRLS’ ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION The G. A. A. has progressed rapidly in its five years of existence. The chief aim of the Association is to arouse interest in athletics, start athletic competition, produce sportsmanship, and develop an all-around American girl.

The letter “C” manifests a superior accomplishment, inasmuch a girl must earn a thousand points in order to receive this award. The second '‘C” has a stripe to designate the ultra-athletic girl. This letter is obtained by re­ ceiving five hundred additional points.

Two types of sports were innovated this year. These sports were archery and baseball. We hope that these sports will continue as a part of the regular curriculum.

Honors for inter-class sports go to the Sophomore Class. This class won the volleyball, basketball, and baseball tournaments by hard-fought battles.

The G. A. A. presented a program in Forum, May 27, dealing with athletic work. It is the desire that this organization continues to be active and produce more “Real American Girls y >

VOLLEYBALL The most popular sport of the year was volleyball. Its season lasted over a period of three months, which allows the girls time to become very proficient in this sport. The Sophomores, after hard fought battles, beat all the classes and were awarded the distinction of being the class winners. We played volley­ ball games against Camp Verde, in which we were victorious, and against, Jerome, in which we were defeated.

BASEBALL Although baseball was a new sport this year, it played an important part in the physical education curriculum. The Sophomores were the winners of the class tournaments. More pep and enthusiasm from the high school was shown in baseball than in any other sport. By next year we shall probably have some < < Babe Ruths” produced.

BASKETBALL Basketball tournaments were played off in fine shape this year. A rela­ tively new way of playing off our games, called the “round robin tourna­ ment”, was put into practice.

TENNIS Due to the fact that there were not enough girls interested in tennis to constitute a number of teams in tennis, no matches were played.

ARCHERY Through the efforts of Miss Hedderman, physical education instructor, archery was introduced into our high school this year. One thing worthy of recognition is the fact that Clarkdale High School is the only high school in the state which has train­ ing in archery. Next year these pupils who are interested enough to resume practice in archery will probably have the honor of competing against the University of Arizona and other higher institutions of the state.

18. The Truxton-lndian game gave a score of 19-0 in our favor, but “ Jimmer received a broken leg in the fray.

20. The Senior Class rings finally arrived. Girls of under classes seem to be wearing them also! Boys, what’s the reason?

25. Ah! Two whole days of vacation and lots of eat. Who isn’t thankful for Thanksgiving?

26. We would have to lose the last game of the season—to Prescott, 0-13. ...DECEMBER...

11. The Juniors presented the play, “Daddies”. The talent of the Junior class was exhibited.

18. We had a good beginning in basketball, too. We beat Payson 29-0, and Camp Verde 16-13.

23. The Seventh Grade entertained in Forum with a Christmas play. No more school for ten days! Do you or don’t you believe in Santa Claus: 26. The boys beat Camp Verde, 39-7. ..JANUARY...

5. Prescott came over and they beat us, 23-16.

6. This semester’s Forum election promised to be good. Campaign posters covered doors and walls.

15. Camp Verde just wouldn’t believe that we could beat them. Well, we did, 28-11.

23. We also beat Jerome, 17-9. Stars can shine in basketball as well as in the sky.

29. The Annual Staff gave a program in Forum. We saw the Follies of 1932”. Were they good? They had to be to make up for the poor speeches given by members of the staff.

30. Hurrah! Prescott met defeat this time—44-5. ..FEBRUARY...

6. They boys went to Winslow and Willimas on a basketball trip. They were defeated b, both, 21-15 and 22-16.

8. George Jonovich, from Globe, started to school. Did you notice how the girls were dressing up?

MURDER IN PODUNK AT MIDNIGHT It was after eleven o’clock one winter night when the incident, which I am about to relate, occurred. That night, after putting away my work I happened to glance out of my window to see the condition o! the wcathci.

A drizzling rain was falling and I could feel the cold wind as it crept around the window casing. Under the dim street lamp on the corner opposite my apart­ ment 1 perceived two dripping figures. Their backs were turned, but I took them to be newsboys, and my supposition was confirmed a moment later when a passer-by paused before the two dejected creatures and then hurried on stuffing a newspaper beneath his coat. 1 tried to imagine the poverty that those poor fellows must suffer, that the chance of making a farthing or two could cause them to stay out on such a foul night. I was on the point of opening the window that I might call them over and give them a few shillings and advise them to go home and warm themselves, when a movement in the street caught my eye. I was able to discern the figure of a man, as he stealthily approached the “newsies”. I also made out that he carried a small box, which he handled with obvious care. Then after cautiously placing the box behind the shivering boys, the figure again disappeared into the shadows. For a moment I was puzzled by these strange actions. Then I knew! A bomb! Those boys were to be blown to pieces! 1 tried to raise the sash to cry a warning, but, swollen by the rains, it held fast. 1 rushed to the door. My hand was on the knob when a muffled roar rent the air. Then all went black.

It was some time the following day when I recovered consciousness in a hospital. Upon inquiring I learned that the heavy hunting ax that hung over the door of my apartment had evidently been jarred from its support by the explosion, and, in falling, it must have struck my head. The nurse could tell me nothing of the outcome of the heinous crime that I had witnessed, but in the morning paper I found the following: “Last night near midnight an unknown person destroyed the two mechanical men that hold papers in front of Hegg’s Patent Office. The machines were quite remarkable and resembled men to a surprising degree, even to being clothed. Thy had only yesterday been purchased by the ITegg office as a curiosity and advertisement. ! i —ROBERT HUNTINGTON, ’34.

She is stopping for a few days to visit with us, before going on to visit with mother. I ex­ pect her to arrive some time tomorrow afternoon. We will not have to meet her because the train is not running on schedule, so she will take a taxi from the station.” Then Annebelle continued pleadingly Now, Jim, we’ve

The next morning Jim and Annebelle were up bright and early. The hired girl was busy about the house when Jim left for town. About ten o’clock,' Annebelle was very busy and also quite exasperated. Being new at this cooking business and having made a failure of both cake and pie. she wasn t in a very humorous mood. She was just going to try for success in the art of baking for the second time when the doorbell rang. Annebelle jumped up in such a hurry that she didn’t wipe her tear stained face.

She jerked the door open. There stood a frail little woman in black who said, ‘‘Why my dear, what is the matter?”Annebelle forgetting the person was a stranger sobbed out her story. The woman said, “Why I’ll be glad to help you.” Overjoyed, Annabella accepted. They set to work and in no time at all had a big baking out, the house in order, and the dinner on.

With a smile, the woman asked, “Can you tell me where Mr. and Mrs. James Williams reside? 1 am to be their guest Tor several days and I ought to be sending to the station for my bags.

You can imagine Annebelle’s surprise; but after thinking it over she came to the conclusion that she knew Aunt Anne as she never would have known her otherwise.

Late that night Annebelle said, “Jim, I have found that it does not pay to try and make an impression on folks. Just be one’s self and one will always be better liked.

Poor Jim nodded assent but could not understand.

SENIOR PLAY

The Senior Play, “Three Live Ghosts”, which was directed by Miss Bolinger, was presented at the Clark Memorial Club on February 19. 1932. It was one of the finest plays ever to be presented to the people of the Verde District.

It was a three-act comedy, the setting of which took place in the slums of London following the World war.

The three live ghosts were Jimmy, who had been reported dead; Bill, an American, who was trying to escape the police; and Spoofv, a shell-shocked Englishman.

Old Sweetheart”, Jimmy’s stepmother, and Peggy, Jimmy’s sweetheart, were surprised by the reappearance of Jimmy, Spoofy, and Bill. Many com­ plications arose because of Spoofy’s “taking ways.” During the play he robbed a house and kidnapped a small child. Bill, who had committed a crime in the States, was blamed for the robbery and kidnapping.

Everything was finally straightened out by the discovery that Spoofy had robbed his own house and kidnapped his own baby. After paying back the money lie had stolen, Bill was released. Spoofy found his wife; Bill his sweet­ heart, Rose; and Jimmy won his “gal”, Peggy. < i

TUNIOR PLAY The three-act comedy, “Daddies’’, was given by the Junior t lass al the Clark Memorial Auditorium on the evening of December 11, 1931.

The setting of the story is in Mrs. Audrey s home near Tarrytown, N. ., shortly after the World war.

Imagine four confirmed bachelors (thinking women a necessary evil) each inveigled into adopting a war orphan. This is what happens to lour members of one bachelor’s club. Instead of each getting the orphan he orders, all sorts of mixups occur. James Crockett, a regular woman-hater, gets a little French girl. Lorry, instead of a boy. Allen gets a whole set of triplets, all boys. Robert Audrey, fully expecting a young miss of five years, receives a sweet young girl of seventeen, with whom he later falls in love. Walters adopts “Little Uncle Sammy”, the orphan of his friend who was killed in the war. In order to keep Lorry Crockett has to marry Madame Levigne, Lorry’s mother. Bob Audrey finally confesses to Ruth that he loves her; and Ruth returns bis af­ fections. So—“All’s well that ends well.”
