More interest was evinced this year in forensic work than ever before, and ten students belonged to the Debate Club which met four times monthly under the direction of Miss Blanche E. Raylc. Prom the membership three debaters were chosen to make up the Debate Team. Billy Kuzell, a debater from last year's team, had as his colleague Gordon Luepke, and Dorothy Wombaeker was alternate.

The first encounter of the season took place in Camp Verde when Billy and Dorothy won an unanimous decision upholding the affirmative of the question: “Resolved, that the chain store system is detrimental to the best interests of the American public”.

The second debate was against Snowflake at Flagstaff when Clarkdalcu team, composed for that debate, of Billy and Gordon, lost a 2-1 decision in again upholding the Affirmative. This defeat eliminated the team from the contest for State honors.

No apologies are offered for the work done this year by the debaters.

They did splendid work and it is hoped that they will continue their activities along forensic lines next year.

A tha McAllister as Marjorie Blake and Ellen Shanahan as Julv.i were the two feminine leads in the play, and deserve much credit for their splendid work.

Just picture a cheering section at a college track meet—a fraternity dance —a college book store—pep—everything that a college has. That—and a lot more was in “The Poor Nut”, given by the Junior Class of 1931, November 2(5, 1930 at the Clark Memorial Clubhouse.

Senior Play “It Won’t Be Long Now” was the play chosen by the Senior Class this yvear. It was given at the Clark Memorial Auditorium. Friday, March 20. 1931.

Only twenty-four hours to live !Put yourself in this man's place and tell us what you would do. The part of Robert Preston, taken by Marvin Landers showed what a man can be when he has only twenty-four hours to live. Dolly Southard as Ann Winston, the girl Preston loved, helped to reveal the real character of this man. Dr. Tally, played by Floyd Allen, helped Ann to bring Preston’s real life to the surface, and Helen Mooney nearly stole the show, as the lisping Vivian Dcrrill, or “the thilly tliimp” as she was called. These four outstanding characters made the show a success, with the help ol: other members of the Senior Class and Miss Bolinger who directed the play.

“Swords and Scissors” < < Swords and Scissors” was the operetta chosen by Miss Davey this year, to be presented by the girls’ and boys’ glee clubs, April 24, 1931, at the Clark Memorial Clubhouse.

The setting is in the French courts at Malmaison. The part of the empress was taken by Dorothy Wombacker, the emperor by Robert Greenwood, and Mile.

Rose de Vidal, the maid of honor, by Mary Sullivan. Bunny Keller took the part of the detective, who thinks quite a bit of himself, and who proves to be a failure as a detective in the eyes of Monsieur Fouche and the entire French court.

It was received with much enthusiasm, and proved to be one of the best operettas ever presented by the Clarkdale High School.

Flagstaff Trip Clarkdale High School was represented this year at the Music Contest atFlagstaff by the Girls’ Glee Club, who took first place; a one-act pla,y “Sun Up”, which took second place in dramatics; Robert Greenwood, a plane geometry student who took first place in mathematics; a clarinet solo by Thomas Rosas; Nellie Burris, an*advanced typist; and Billy Kuzell in oratory.

Dolly Southard was awarded a gold medal for the best individual actor.

A good time was had by all.

\ FN 1 hough Clarkdalc had the most unsuccessful season in tlic history ol the school it had one of the largest squads ever to remain out tlie entire season, showing splendid school spirit. Coach Gruvcr had four letter men around which to build a team. Three of these were linemen. The line was the strongest in the North and very little ground was gained through it. All the victories against us were largely due to passing. We out played all our opponents as far as first downs and actual playing was concerned, but we had no scoring punch. The team never showed its full power till the last, half of the Prescott game.

Starting with Williams right on through to the end it was the same story of heart breaks. Great credit is due to the men who did not make the team but who had such fine school spirit as to remain out all season.

The season opened at Williams October 12.

It was the first time that eight of our men had ever been under fire but they showed up well, outplaying Williams in every quarter of the game. We were penalized one hundred and ten yards and fumbled the ball every time we approached the goal. Williams got their six points on an intercepted pass. The final score was 0 to 0.

Our second game was played at Flagstaff on October 18. It was played ini the mud and snow. The field was slow and our light backs were at a disadvantage. Flagstaff won on a safety and a touchdown. The final score was 8 to 0.

Football Winslow came to Clarkdale for our first home game October 25. Our team had improved and the line plunged through the Wliliams line time and again only to find the ball speeding through the air on its way to the open arms of a Winslow end or back. Our first score of the year was made when Kent fell on a Winslow fumble. They beat us by the score of 20 to 6.

Next we journeyed some two hundred miles to play Kingman. The game was hard fought as the score will indicate. Emelio made a hit with the Indian girls. We thought that we had a touchdown but the referee said nay.

The score was 0 to 0.

The annual Armistice day battle with Jerome took place here this year.

This game was the biggest heart break of all. It was placed on the air by K. C. R. J. in Jerome. Need I say that they beat us by the score of G to 0.

The last and our most successful game was played on Turkey day with Prescott. The team got going in the last half and showed them what we could do. Prescott was ahead of us at the end of thefirst half with t he score of 12 to 0 but we came back and tied them 12 to 12.

Guard-Captain This was Floyd’s second year of Varsity competition. ITc usually alternated with Abbott at barking signals, but missed 90 per cent of both the Jerome and Prescott games due to illness and injury.

FRANK (KIKO) ABBOTT—(Senior)—5 ft. 11 in.—1'50 lbs.

Half Back Last year Kiko earned his “C” at end and half back as sub, but this year he was about the most valuable man on the squad due to his cool headedness.

PRANK (ANDY) ANDREWS—(Senior)—6 ft. 2 in.—165 lbs.

Tackle-End This was Andy’s second year as a regular and his speed and headeness enabled him to be used most effectively on defensive end. When he hit them they knew it if they were still awake. lie was among the best in the north.

FORD GANO—(Senior)—5 ft. 10 in.—150 lbs.

Guard This was Ford’s first year but he gave a good account of himself—plenty of strength and fight.

WILLIAM (BILL) RUCKER—(Senior)—5 ft. 8 in—145 lbs.

Full Back Bill made a name for himself during his only year of Varsity ball. He was a real Wolf on defense and offense, but endurance proportionate to size"here. ' ?

EDWARD (SHERIFF) HOOD—(Junior)—5 ft. 10 in.—159 lbs. Half Back Sheriff made his first arrests from center but due to his speed was shifted to the back field. He should make a name for himself next season.

MIKE (GALLOPING GHOST) MEDIGOVICH—(Junior)—5 ft. 8 in.

Half Back 140 lbs.

This double-jointed knee and hip actor played his first year of Varsity ball. He’s hard to stop when he gets a wiggling.

ALVIN (JIMMER) REESE—(Junior)—5 ft. 7 in.—135 lbs.

Half Back Jimmer was the best open field runner on the squad and should show his heels to opponents next fall.

Guard.

DAN WOMACK—(Junior)—5 ft. 7 in.—155 lbs.

This boy was fast and rough. He should make history next year.

Center LONNEY FERGUS—(Junior) 5 ft. 9 in.—145 lbs.

One of the best defensive centers in the north and not weak on offense.

LA VERNE (BUSTER-ALL-STATE) BENTLEY—6 ft. 4 in.—185 lbs.

Tackle-End This giant alternated with “Andy”, playing tackle on defense and end on offense. These two boys made it tough for all opponents. All-State pickers overlooked Bus this year—not in 1931.

Half Back Roy can do about everything needed—kick—pass—carry the ball -tackle What more should be expected from a freshman.

CHARLES (CHARLEY) CASTLEBERRY— (Frosh) 5 ft. (i in.—180 lbs.

Quarter Speed personified and the best open field tackier on the squad, but erratic on punt receiving. When he gets over this fault he'll be a real ‘'Wolf'.

EMILIO MONO INI—(Frosh) 5 ft. 10 in.—225 lbs.

This giant starred in every game, opening holes and tackling all over the field. He should be recognized by the All-State pickers next fall.

WILLIAM (BILLY) KUZELL—(Junior) Manager Had all men connected with football and its history been so efficient as Billy, surely the Northern championship would be resting here again this year. He’s a show maker, doctor, tailor, salesman, financier, et al.

SUBSTITUTES—(Future Lcttcrmen) Bern Dolly, Fred Townsend, Frank Mongini, Norman Rhodes, Novum Anderson, Harold Wigstrom, Malcolm Webb, and Phillip Crookham took a lot of battering during the many scrimmage sessions. May their efforts not be in vain in the future.

IIEllK were about twenty-five candidates who answered Coach Cr—er*s call for practice. The squad was afterwards cut to fifteen members, including the two managers.

The first game was here with Pine wlnm we defeated 27 to 10 and from then on we marched through the season with only one defeat and that was to Prescott at Prescott the score being 1 (> to 14. The only other defeat was at the state tournament at the hands of Chandler, 15 to 11.

On February 2G. 27, and 28 the team went to Tucson to the state tournament. Our first .■H opponent was Chandler who defeated us by one & 7 point 15 to 14. In the Consolation tournament AC our first opponent was Yuma whom we out­ classed by the score of 27 to 22. Next we drew (Jlobe and gave them the small end of the score CAPTAIN of 31 to 1(>, this put us into the finals with Clifton and by defeating them 1o the tune of 21 to 14 we won the Consolation cup which now rests in our trophy case in the lower hall.

Basketball Lettermen FRANK (KIKO) ABBOTT—(Senior) Captain Guard.

Kiko is one of the best all-round athletes ever developed at C. H. S. His steadiness, speed, and clean sportsmanship were always outstanding. This makes him a “three striper” and captain.

BUSTER BENTLEY—(Junior) Guard Another all-round athlete to be proud of. His guarding has not been surpassed by anyone since he became a Varsity man in 1929-30. They just can't shoot over him. He’s a two striper with two years on second All-State and one year All-Northern, one more year to go for All-State.

Center GORDON (OTTO) LUEPKE—(Junior) This slim lad is the jumpingest boy here abouts. He never fails to get the tip-off which means much to any team. Then he’s a bear on defense, too.

ALVIN (JIMMER) REESE—(Junior) Forward Another jack of all trades but truly he’s a master at this one. Not the best shot in the north, his speed and a aggressiveness makes him a pleasure to match for he’s always digging-up the ball for the other fellows.

Forward EDWARD (ED) TORREZ— (Frosh) Another all-round star and only a freshman, too. Boy how he can handle a ball and shoot. “Reese or Abbottt to Torrez through the basket was a sort of habit this season.

Forward-Guard NORMAN MUNSON—(Senior) This was Munson’s second year as first-string sub. His speed and ability to guard and shoot made him a big asset in many games.

Guard-Center FRANK (ANDY) ANDREWS—(Senior) This was Andy’s third season on the squad but first year for a letter.

His biggest weakness was his strength which caused him to “Man-handle’ his opponents occasionally.

SUBSTITUTES—Not Lettermen.

Leo Thompson, Luis Gonzales, Clemente Bueno, Phillip Crookham, and Mike Medigovich deserve much credit for the team’s showing. They were faithful to practice and the team and several should be lettermen next season. Give them a hand.

Junior High Basketball i The basketball season of the Junior High was far from successful. The season started here against Prescott, who came out of the game with the long end of the 15 to 20 score. Wc lost both of our games with Jerome and Prescott, and also both with Jerome. We came in ahead of Clemenceau and Camp Verde in all of our games with them.

Most of the material for the team was green and showed lack of team work at times.

The Junior High had a lack of material but this had no drawback to Coach Kahm who enlisted members from the sixth grade this disqualified them from winning the county championship but they had a very successful season otherwise. They either won or tied all their games. Coach Ivahm had his squad out every night for practice even tho there were not enough men to scrimmage.

The season opened at Prescott with a scoreless tie, one of the three which they played through out the season. The other two being with Jerome. In the past two years they have played four scoreless ties out of four games with Jerome.

111 the four years of its existence (!. A. A. has grown to be a live and enthusiastic organization in the life of C. II. S. The purpose of the Association is to sponsor interest in athletics, athletic competition, sportsmanship, and all-around development, among the girls.

The G. A. A. “C” signifies a high standard of attainment, inasmuch as a girl must earn a thousand points for the award, and the difficulty of doing this is indicated by the fact that no girl has ever won hers before her Junior year.

For two years the Class of 1931 were victors in every sport, but this year the Freshmen started a break in their lucky streak by winning the swimming meet. The Sophomores took the volleyball tournament, but in basketball the Seniors staged a comeback by winning the pennant in that sport.

Besides inter-class competition the girls had volleyball and tennis games with Jerome, in which they were defeated, and tennis and basketball games with Camp Verde, in which they were victorious.

Probably the most interesting event that G. A. A. sponsored this year was the Play Day, on February 24, to which representatives from Prescott, Jerome, Camp Verde, and Clemenceau were invited. Golf and tennis were the interests of the morning, a picnic lunch at Peck’s Lake at noon, and basketball in the afternoon. A banquet at the Clubhouse in the evening at which the loosers entertained the winners, finished the day properly.

Typical of the spirit ol: G. A. A.—the hope to develop all-around worth­ while girls—was the one-act play, » . The Real American Girl”, which they produced for their Forum program. The school was surprised and pleased to know that their girl athletes were also their actresses, singers, and dancers.

It is the hope of G. A. A. that the girls of Clarkdale High school will always be '‘Ileal American Girls”.

Jimmy, age six, and his little sister Jane, age four, were making mud pies. Tt was June and a very nice month for the children to play outside.

Mrs. Wellington heard Jane crying and went to the door to see what was wrong. Jimmy was “bawling her out” for spoiling one of his mud pics. Mrs. Wellington told Jimmy that Jane didn’t mean to spoil it. But Jimmy was a hard-headed boy and said, “The little brat'. I just hate her. Why doesn't she play with Margie?

But Jimmy wouldn’t listen to her. so his Mother told him to go play with Dick, who lived just a block down the street.

Poor Jane thought the world was against her, but after her Mother promised her iee cream, she was very happy.

Jimmy had been gone but a little while when he came back for his ball and bat. He was all excited; he told his mother that they were going to have a baseball game, and maybe he would be captain.

Jimmy, running, left home but about thirty minutes later he came back, angry and disagreeable. When lie had returned to Dick’s house he had learned that he was to be a fielder, so Jimmy, who was never crossed, took his baseball and bat and went home.

Something happened later in his life. He fell in love with Valeria Brofton.

She was a tiny red-headed girl with dark brown eyes and plenty of temper Their courtship was short and rapid. They were married about two months after they met each other.

How they ever got along was a mystery, because Valeria, the petted daughter of “Old Man” Brofton. the owner of Putman’s in New York, had had her way all her life, and Jimmy had never been taught to give in to anyone.

Jimmy and Valeria were happy for about six months. Then they declared war. Each wanted his way and the other wouldn’t give in. They separated.

Jimmy was sad and so was Valeria. When each had known the pangs of loneliness and had had time “to think thmgs over , they decided to return to married life, declaring they would give up their pettishness.

When Little Tiny was born, they decided they would teach him the meaning of Sportsmanship, because a lack of that characteristic in the lives of people caused so much misunderstanding and heartache.

SATIRE ('.Youthful Satire)

How widespread is the naive youth of youth! And, (we hear the older assent) how true! Who is one to decide the ever-vibrant term—Youth. To lerm oneself past youth is but mild conceit. To murmur, “I am past that tingling, hectic period of blindness"—is but double, blindness, and, above all, to put a barrier between more material age and that false estimate—Youth— is but pure folly.

No mortals shall draw themselves to a giddy height, fling back their heads indulgently and gurgle, ‘the dear youngness, the sweet idiocy of youth.* They usually assume that lofty, mature air (people of this type) and snicker in embarrassment as they recall with dizzy sensations, their fast moving youth.

What spasms—mv first furbelow—my first armbands. But away, betraying memories, youth is past. Yes, let’s all recognize and join in the cry—Youth is past!

How we love (we so-called youth of today) the thrill and palpitations that scurry through our very beings, when someone a bit advanced in years, can deem themselves to condescend; to expand their souls and melt into anything so infinitely kind as to let their sage tongues wag in our directions.

We, blind youth, are deeply moved when elders see it fit and proper to delve into a passing conversation with us. Our little groping souls are strengthened, the ties and veils of blissful ignorance seem to loosen and clear a little. Our visions expand, every throat is choked with joy akin to pain; a higher plain is foreseen, and a celestial smile curves the lips of the fortunate youngster.

How we love to be constantly reminded of our never outgrown infancy. How our youthful eyes look in longing, at these, our elders. Do young minds remain filled with the soothing thought that some day, (Oh-joyful anticipation!) we will come into our glory by being as learned that we aspire to great works.

Cast aside the deceit! We but crave to stay young. Why? Do you ask? All, ignorance, if we grew older, or came into our full intelligence—gone would be the phrases so sweet to our ears, the phrases we long for and await with stifled breath. And the phrases? Listen and you will hear. From the babble of voices, pick out the most honeyed, condescending accents and hark!

We don’t understand a thing they say.

Those kids arc always in the way!

Not credited with a grain of sense We’ve learned to stay behind our fence, And let the elders do the talking— (We’re supposed to do the shocking!)

And when, in impressive tones and slow To us, our ciders try to show; How to think and how to live, Don’t they ever realize, (When we descreetly drop our eyes) That we learned that long ago?

Their condescensions too slow.

And sympathy—our youth has none, Except for just ourselves alone.

Our mind aren’t capable of ought That needs a little solemn thought.

A golden glow from the heavens afar throws a tinge of light upon this scene . from God’s own heart. All are waiting for tomorrow, thinking, longing, and wondering. From many beauties of early times and all parts of our U. S. A. Just an “ordinary girl” was chossen as the “Real American Girl” of today.

Miss Bolinger starts rehearsals on the play “Sun-up”.

With hopes that at Flagg it will win the victory cup.

The memory of Miss Goure’s party in our minds will always linger.

We hate to use slang—but really it was a hum-dinger.

We’re glad to finish school but its hard to leave our friends.
