Foreword While the curtain is rising on the class of ’30 at the beginning of their first act, in the Great Drama, is it too much to hope that you of the audience who have assisted will continue to give them your appreciative support, with­ holding judgment and censure until the final curtain and the disbanding of the cast?

They trust that many years may pass ’ere this shall happen and that “The Alchemist” of 1930 the program of the prologue of the show will serve as a reminder of the puppets.

The Dramatic Club has been the most active school club this year, Meetings are held every other week; parties once a month.

The Dramatic Club has given two plays in Forum, The first was “Savin’ Dad;” the second, “Mix Well and Stirr.”

AUTO MECHANICS CLASS

DEBATING Clarkdale was especially fortunate in its debating this year. held, in three of which the team won a two to one decision.

Four debates were

The question for debate was “Resolved That a Substitute for Trial by Jury be Adopted in the United States.’’ Clarkdale was fortunate enough each time to debate the affirmative side. The team was composed of Junior Jones and Bill Kuzell with Fred Winkler as alternate. Dolly Southard is also to be praised for the splendid assistance she gave the team.

The first debate was with Jerome on February 17, at Jerome. The team is to be praised for their fine showing although it was their poorest debate. The next debate was with Snowflake at Flagstaff on March 4. Even the team expected Snowflake to win as they have been district champions several years. However, our boys showed the fighting spirit of Clarkdale and came out victorious. The debate for District Cham­ pionship was with Prescott on March 14 at Prescott, and again Clarkdale was the winner. This is the first time Clarkdale has won the Championship, so it can well be proud of the Debate Team.

The last and greatest debate was with Phoenix on March 29 at Clarkdale. Al­ though the decision was in favor of Phoenix, the team outshone itself and gave its best debate of the season. In this debate it was very evident that the team was a happy combination, for while Billy excelled in delivery and smoothness of speech, Junior showed his ability to think clearly and to the point which made his rebuttal a real work of art.

Clarkdale has shown that it can win contests other than athletics. is hoped that it can win even greater success than it has this year.

The Girls’ Glee Club won second place last year at the Music Contest in Flagstaff. The Girls’ Quartet, composed of Betsy Zagt, Helen Mooney, Geraldine Young, and Dorothy Wombacher, won first place. The quartet has sung at a number of community clubs throughout the year.

BOYS’ GLEE CLUB The Boys’ Glee Club has had by far its most successful year, This is the first year the Boys’ Glee Club ever participated in the operetta. The Boys’ Quartet has for members William Landers, Gordon Luepke, Fred Winkler and Dave Saunders.

CHRISTMAS PROGRAM The Christmas program was presented before the general public in the Clark Memorial Auditorium Thursday, December 19.

Solo parts were taken by Edna Miller, Geraldine Young, Betzy Zagt, Helen Dolly, Gordon Luepke, Dave Saunders and Fred Winkler. The Junior High music class and the Girls’ and Boys’ Glee Club sang the choruses.

Miss Merrill directed the program. Miss Goure accompanied on the piano. This was the first program of its kind ever presented by the school. It is planned to have it an annual affair.

BETTY LOU “Betty April 4th.

Club sang one in the

Lou”, the Glee Clubs Operetta was presented to the public Friday evening, It met with great success. This was the first time that the Boys’ Glee in the operetta. Every year before this the Girls’ Glee Club was the only production.

“Betty Lou” is a story of the life of Betty Lou, daughter of a very vain mother who wants to marry Betty to some rich man. Betty Lou, however, has her own ideas on matrimony. She discovers that Robert Sherwood, a bashful young man, is in love with her. Betty Lou masquerades as a small girl and tells Robert Sherwood how to express his love to Betty Lou. She finally makes herself known to him and he tells her how much he loves her.

SENIOR CLASS PLAY The Senior Class Play, “Seven Keys to Baldpate’,, was presented before a large audience in the Clark Memorial Auditorium, March 21, 1930.

“Seven Keys to Baldpate’ is a mystery play. An author goes to a summer hotel in the winter to write a book. He is trying to win a wager that he cannot write a book in twenty-four hours. The adventures he goes through before he can write the story make up quite an exciting evening.

The Senior Class Play is given to earn money to help defray expenses for the Annual.

The play was successful both financially and dramatically. The coach, Miss Martin, and her assistants, Miss Rayle, and Miss Johnson, deserve much credit for their efforts.

Others who helped make the play a success were Pierce Rhodes, advertising man­ ager, David Saunders, business manager; William Boren, stage manager.

THE JUNIOR PLAY The Junior class play, “The Goose Hangs High,” was presented at the Clark Mem­ orial Auditorium, December 6, 1929. It proved a decided success. “The Goose Hangs High,” is a Christmas play, and coming at the time it did, was even more acceptable.

The purpose of the Junior Class Play is to raise funds to help pay for the Junior Prom.

Miss Mooney and Miss Goure are to be congratulated on their work as directors of the play. Credit is also due the property manager, Thelma Wolfe; the stage manager, Bill Landers, and the advertising manager, Wilma Parsons.

FOOTBALL ’29 Thirty men answered Coach Gruver’s first call for football. Of this number about twenty-two remained out the rest of the season. The most difficult task faced by Coach Gruver was developing a line, as practically the entire group of graduating lettermen were linemen. Although the line was a bit ragged the first of the season, it quickly While boasting a number of fast developed into the strongest line in the North, hard-hitting backs, our backfield was never at its full strength, due to injuries or sick­ ness. However, it never failed to gain against any of our opponents.

Starting with Williams, the team marched to five straight conference victories to win the undisputed Championship of Northern Arizona.

Great credit is due to the men who did not make the team but who had such fine school spirit as to remain out all season.

HOLLAND “MUSCLES” RUSSELL—(Senior) “Muscles” always took care of the work connected with his office (manager) in a very satisfactory manner. Nothing was too good for the team or too much trouble when “Muscles” was around.

E. M. “COACH” GRUVER— Coach Graver's teams have lost only two conference games in three years, win­ ning the Yavapai County Championship three times and the Northern Arizona Championship the past two years.

CLARENCE “RED” BOREN—(Frosh) Besides being a real supporter of the team, “Red” was assistant manager, With his sunny disposition he was always willing to help. We’re looking for an effi­ cient manager in Clarence next year.

WILLIE BOREN—(Senior) Willie was captain and quarterback. His generalship had much to do with win­ ning the championship of Northern Arizona. This was Willie’s third year in the backfield and he never gave anything but his best and that was usually plenty to bother the opponents. Honorable mention on All-Northern and All-State in 1929.

CHARLES “CHARLEY” LATHROP—(Senior)

This was “Charley’s” second year as full-back and a real full-back he was. He made second All-Northern and received honorable mention for All-State in 1929.

His defensive work was second to none in the north. Winslow felt the power back of his tackling, as did most other opponents.

BRYANT “JUNIOR” JONES—(Senior) The second year’s work on the Varsity was an outstanding one for Junior. He made All-Northern end and second All-State end in 1929. This is enough to any athlete’s credit. Not a single gain was made around his end during the en­ tire season, and more than one touchdown resulted from his ability as a pass receiver.

PIERCE '“DUSTY” RHODES—(Senior) This backfield man brought the crowds to their feet when he returned punts.

This was his only year on the Varsity and he gave all he had when called upon to carry the ball or run interference.

FRED "FERDY” WINKLER—(Senior) The first and only year on the Varsity was an outstanding one for this husky guard. He made second All-Northern and received honorable mention for AllState. Not bad for one year?

J. D. BIVINS—(Senior) J. D. was the star of centers of the north, althougn he made only second AllNorthern and received honorable mention for All-State. What it took for a good center J. D. had—everything. It was the first year for him.

The season opened here on October 12, with Williams. The team was green as a whole and did not show to its best advantage. We pushed over a touchdown in the third quarter which proved to be the winning margin. The conversion made the score 7 to 0.

Our next game with Flagstaff proved to be the hardest and closest game of the season. Both teams battled on even terms during the first half but a fumble coupled with two line plays in the third quarter gave Flagstaff her six points. In the fourth quarter, a pass to Boren followed by one to Abbott, put the ball over the line.

Saunders plunged across for the extra point making the final score 7 to 6 in our favor.

On October 26, Clarkdale journeyed across the hill to Prescott. Clarkdale had the ball deep in Prescott’s territory most of the game. A touchdown was made in the second and fourth quarters. The final score of 13 to 0 does not show the difference in the two teams. Prescott was unable to penetrate nearer our goal' than the 20-yard line. The final score was 13 to 0.

Due to passes and fumbles they were within our 10-yard line three times but each time the Clarkdale line rose to great heights and withstood the attack.

The kicking of Bentley was a feature of this game. At the close of the game we were on our way to another touchuown.

On Armistice Day the annual classic with Jerome was played before one of the largest crowds ever seen on a valley field. Jerome started off with a bang and pushed over a touchdown as a result of a fumble and a pass. With the score 7 to 0 against us, the team got going and pushed over three touchdowns in the second quarter. One more touchdown was made in the last half, making the final score 26 to 7. The play of the entire team was outstanding in this game.

Our final game of the season was played on Thanksgiving Day with Glendale. Al­ though we had the ball within their 15-j'ard line nine times, we were unable to score.

Penalties or fumbles at the wrong time cost us an easy victory. A trick play ending in a pass resulted in Glendale’s lone touchdown. The final score was 6 to 0.

FRANK “ANDY” ANDREWS—(Junior) “Andy” was just about as sweet a tackle as could be found anywhere. His size, aggressiveness, fight and ability made it impcssiDle for the opposition to accom­ plish much through his side of the line. He should make another All-Northern tackle for Clarkdale by 1930.

FLOYD ALLEN—(Junior) Floyd's knowledge of inside football made him one of the most valuable players on the team. He played guard to the satisfaction of all. His handicap in weight is more than overshadowed by his fight and football mind. Watch him go next year.

BASKETBALL 29-30 Basketball practice started on December 1, with about twenty candidates aspiring for first team berths.

Flagstaff was the first important opponent. The game ended with Flagstaff on the long end of a 33-22 score. The only other scheduled game lost during the season was to Prescott at Prescott.

On Feb. 20, 21 and 22 the team played at the Northern Arizona Tournament. The first game was won rather easily from Williams. Clarkdale won the right to enter the semi-finals by defeating Kingman, conquerors of the state champions. In the semi-finals we again encountered Flagstaff. This time the score was on the other side of the ledger.

The Championship game was played Saturday night with Snowflake. Snowflake had a complete runaway in their semi-final game and this proved their margin of victory.

The final score was 21 to 18.

The following week the team was invited to Tucson to the state Tournament. By some strange turn of fortune Flagstaff was the first opponent. We again defeated them by the close score of 21 to 19. Our next opponent was Gilbert, one of the strongest Valley teams. Clarkdale upset the dope and defeated them 26 to 17, and entered the semi-finals. After a hard scrap we defeated St. David 23 to 18 and entered the finals against Bisbee, something no other Ciarkdale team has ever ac:cmplished before. In the final game, two weeks of tournament play began to show its effects. Bisbee pos­ sessed a stronger team and won the final game 41 to 18.

WILLIE BOREN—(Foward)—During Willie’s three years of Varsity competition he gave his all, both as guard and forward. He made All-Northern forward this year and well deserved the distinction. Willie led in scoring for the team.

OSLEY "HASHER” RAGLE—(Captain and Guard)—This was Osley’s second year on the Varsity. His height, strength and speed made him one of the outstanding guards in the state. He was selected as All-State running guard. Good enough.

BRYANT "JUNIOR" JONES—(Center)—Junior’s two years found him selected as sec­ ond All-Northern center both years. When an opponent out-jumped Junior he was getting close to heaven. He ranked high in scoring among centers, especially from the. charity line.

FRANK "KIKO" ABBOTT—(Forward)—“Kiko”, although only a junior has had two years on the Varsity. Las* year he played running guard but his all-round ability earned a forward berth for him this year. He was the most consistent player on the team.

LA VERNE "BUSTER" BENTLEY—(Guard)—This giant sophomore made All-Northern guard in 1930, his first year on the Varsity. His work was outstanding in every game. He was favorably mentioned for All-State. Two years should find him at the top.

JACK HUGHES—(Sub Guard)—Jack was handicapped on account of his size but his fight made up for this. He was a regular during the first part of the season but gave way to "Buster" whose height told.

JOHN "J. D." BIVINS—(Sub Forward and' Center)—This versatile athlete always gave a good account cf himself when injected into a fray. He was in every play and could handle the ball with the best of them.

NORMAN MUNSON—(Forward and Guard)—This little bundle of greased lightning did some good work during the season and should make things prettly lively for op­ ponents next year. His tournament playing was his best. He craves competition.

JUNIOR HIGH FOOTBALL More enthusiasm was shown in Junior High football this year than in previous years, Coach Kahm had the boys out every night going through their paces in preparation for the season. A number of practice games were held with the High School lightweights. These games were of great value to both squads.

The season opened with an overwhelming victory over Clemenceau at Clemenceau.

Only one game was lost during the entire season and this game was played at Prescott under unsatisfactory conditions. Much material for future High School teams was de­ veloped by Coach Kahm.

JUNIOR HIGH BASKETBALL In developing a Junior High basketball team Coach Kahm was faced with the problem of teaching boys who had never seen a ball before. Very little time was given to the team for the use of the Gym. As a result the team was late in getting started.

But by the end of the season the Junior High had a real basketball team. They held the strong Prescott team, Conference Champions, to two points in the final game of the season. In a practice game with Jerome after the regular season the team showed its real strength by doubling the score on their larger opponents.

TENNIS Enthuisiasm for tennis at C. H. S. this year was greater than ever before. Provi­ sion was made for participation of a greater number of boys than heretofore.

About eight boys answered the first call for tennis and the team was selected from this number by match play.

Jack Hughes playing his second year for C. H. S .was number one. Jimmer Reese number two, Fred Winkler number three and Dick Hughes number four. All matches consisted of four singles and two doubles. The results of the matches are as follows: Prescott 5, Clarkdale 1. Jerome 3, Clarkdale 3. Jerome 4, Clarkdale 2. Camp Verde 4, Clarkdale 2, and Camp Verde 5, Clarkdale 1.

With all Lettermen returning and more interest shown among the younger boys, prospects are unusually bright for this year.

The winner of the Yavapai county district is to meet the winner of the Flagstaff district and of that will go to the state meet.

Jock McLearan’s Dream Is Realized

l

Angus McLearan could never remember the time when he had not been interested in golf. An evening visitor at the Country Club might be reasonably sure that he would find Jock McLearan and his small son Angus in the repair shop. And as usu­ ally Jock fashioned, from well seasoned hickory, shafts for new golf clubs. Angus sat by his knee watching with an earnest intentness the slow painstaking work of his father.

Jock McLearan, in his younger days had been English Open Champion. He was born in Edinburgh and was trained to be a carpenter and a wood carver, but at an early age he took an interest in golf and so ardently did he pursue his desire to be a good golfer, that, after years 01 diligent practice, he became British Open Champion. An American golf enthusiast who happened to see the final match, immediately offered Jock a good salary to be professional at a new country club in Minnesota. Jock, realiz­ ing the opportunites he would have in America, accepted the offer.

Jock had married while in Scotland and he and his young wife went to Minne­ sota where Angus was born three years after their arrival in America. Jock progressed rapidly, winning much prize money in many different tournaments. He then accepted a position as professional at a Country Club in Los Angeles.

As little Angus was approaching his teens, Jock cherished hopes of making Angus even a greater golfer than himself. For this reason he had started to teach Angus to putt when he was only ten years old.

Day after day the little boy practiced for an hour in addition to his school work.

This practice was increased as Angus grew older, but Jock wisely told Angus always to remember that, if one must choose, to be a good sportsman was far more preferable to being a good golfer. Angus, having been taught the strictest obedience, remembered his father’s counsel as one of the guiding laws of his life.

When Angus was seventeen years of age, he played on the high school golf team where he made short work of all opponents, winning for his school the high-school golf championship of the state. Angus was invited to play with many of the men in the annual tournaments, but Jock did not permit him to play, for he did not wish him to get too sure of himself before he was good enough to last in a tournament where good competition would be offered.

Angus played with his father daily until at last it was an effort for Jock to beat his son. Then came the day when Angus beat his father by shooting two under par for eighteen holes. Jock was very proud that night as they walked home together, and his was happiness untold as he related to his wife the events of the day.

Angus was graduated from high school that spring and his father insisted that he go to college to learn to be an engineer. So it was arranged that Angus was to go to Uni­ versity of Southern California but that he must also continue his practice of golf.

Four happy years passed during which Angus attended the University. He gradually improved in golf for it was hard to cut off many strokes from his score.

Angus was graduated and secured a position for himself. Suddenly his father took pneumonia and died. Angus and his mother, in their grief were interrupted one day by an attorney, the executor of a will that Jock had made when he was sick.

He left his estate to his wife and to Angus he left a letter in which the merits of all the leading golfers were discussed, both their weaknesses and their strong points. The letter also stated that in the locker at the repair shop he would find a complete set of matched irons and woods. These clubs were Jocks masterpieces, he had spent his spare moments for a year making them. They had hickory shafts that were seasoned so that they were flexible to a high degree. Another page of the letter contained a schedule of the leading golf tournaments of the coming year, including the “National Open” the dream of every tournament golfer. Angus was to enter these tournaments and then to settle down to engineering.

The next year Angus entered the first tournament on the list in compliance with the 46

wishes , of his, father. As yet he was not a professional, so he entered the California Amateur State Golf Tournament, where he had practically no struggle.

Then came the “Catalina Open" in which he was also the victor. The next on the list was the famous “Agua Caliente Open" at Tijuana with cash prizes amounting to $4^0 ,uuU.

At Tijuana he stayed at the Agua Caliente Hotel where he met some crooks after easy money. Angus was led into a casino where ne was easily victimized. He lost $1,000 in a short hour’s play and then got terrifically drunk.

The tournament was to be played in a week and he needed practice on the strange course in order to be familiar with it so that he might have a better chance of winning.

The crooks took advantage of Angus’ youth and keDt him under the influence of liquor for six days, during which he was cheated out of most of his money.

It so happened that the same golf enthusiast, now an old man, who had brought Jock McLearan to America, was at Agua Caliente on a vacation. In looking over the hotel reg­ ister he found Angus’ name and was surprised to find that he was the son of the famous Jock McLearan. He immediately went to Angus’ room where to his disgust he found Angus in the last stages of a long drunk. As an old friend of Jock’s the man felt it his duty to straighten out the boy.

Angus, ashamed that he had been such a fool, was ready to follow the instructions of his father’s friend, who prescribed a long walk. Ail that day he and his new trainer walked over the dry sun-baked hills of Lower California, and at nightfall they returned dead tired and ready for sleep.

The next day, after qualifying, Angus was to play his first match with a professional of national fame, his most skillful competitor thus far. It was a hot day, and at the end of the tenth hole Angus began to visioly weaken under the strain, for, due to his dissipa­ tion he was not in the best of condition.

At the end of the sixteenth hole Angus had the professional one down; he had only to tie or win the next hold and the match was his. The seventh hole was a 360-yard hole with a hedge on the right and a stone wall on the left, the green being completely sur­ rounded by sand traps.

It was Angus’ honor so he teed his ball, took a glance at the fairway to orient him­ self and swung with a slow easy grace, so becoming to a good golfer. But as he swung back his club, the ball fell off the tee, Angus, completely unnerved, replaced the ball and drove. The ball was topped and rolled only 175 yards. His opponent drove 275 yards.

For his second shot Angus selected a spoon, with which he got into the sand trap at the edge of the green. His opponent used a mashie and placed his ball neatly on the green.

On his third shot Angus approached close to the pin, but to no avail, for his opponent sunk his putt for a three, winning the hole.

The next hole was par four. Angus played it in five while his opponent holed out with another brilliant three.

Angus lost the match but he knew whose fault it was and did not sulk, but heartily congratulated the victor wishing him success during the remainder of the tournament.

Angus was heartbroken but did not let anyone think so. The next day he entered the consolation flight, in which, due to his regained skill, he won, in the course of a week.

The “National Open” was not to be played for two months, so Angus devoted his mornings to engineering and his afternoons to training for the coming tournament which was to be played at Miami, Florida.

He went to Miami, accompanied by his mother, where he practiced diligently for two weeks prior to the tournament. The first day he qualified with a score low enough to permit him to enter the tournament. He made short work of his first and second op­ ponents, but his third was the professional who had eliminated him in the “Agua Ca­ liente" Open. But this time it was a different story. Angus was in excellent condition and he was determined that he should not be eliminated by the same man twice.

Although he was given stiff competition Angus was the victor, beating his opponent three up Since there were thirty-two entrants, Angus had to beat five opponents if he wished to win the championship, the next match was played, Angus being the victor.

He had reached the finals and was matched against the title holder of the preceding year, one of the country’s most renowned golfers.

The match was played before a gallery of several hundred enthusiasts but Angus was as calm as when he was practicing with his father. At the end of the first twenty-seven 47

holes Angus was two down, but he retaliated by winning the twenty-eighth, tieing the twenty-ninth, and winning the thirtieth. He lost the thirty-first and thirty-second; how­ ever won the thirty-third, thirty-fourth and thirty-fifth and tied the thirty-sixth, leav­ ing a tie at the end of the thirty-sixth hole. It was then necessary to play the thirtyseventh hole to decide the match.

As Angus approached the 37th tee, the realization came over him that the coming hole was to be one of the crisis of his life. While looking over the gallery he was startled to notice the two crooks who victimized him at Tijuana, sneering just as if to say; “You’re beaten already.” Angus made up his mind that he would wipe that sneer off their faces by winning the next hole, and proving to them that he was not the weakling they took him to be. Still fired with his staunch determination to win, Angus teed up his ball and drove 300 yards, straight down the green fairway. His opponent drove 275 yards. Angus placed his next shot neatly on the green from a distance of 100 yards. His opponent, how­ ever, was not to be bested and placed his ball on the green even closer than Angus'. An­ gus putted first, his ball going straight as an arrow to a resting place in the bottom of the cup. His opponent approached his ball, every nerve tense, his putt was to decide the "National Open.” His ball went straight for the cup but lacked sufficient force to reach it and stopped about one foot in front of the cup.

Angus had won the tournament; the dream of his father’s life was realized Jock McLearan’s son had won the “National Open,” but fate had deprived Jock of what would have, been the happiest moment of his life.

Lest We Forget It was a bright spring morning in late March that it was learned much to every­ one’s sorrow, that either members of the Senior Class had all contracted mumps, or, for some other trivial reason had failed to put in their usual prominent and noisy appearance in the halls. Seme students thought they had been expelled: others had different solutions; but the wise ones, including some of the Faculty, guessed the truth.

The Senior were having their Ditch Day. Immediately a tremendous sigh of relief could be heard and some of it seemed to come from the school building itself.

Meanwhile the Seniors were gathering at Bridgeport, overjoyed at the thought of “ditching” school for a whole glorious day. As soon as all had arrived, the cavalcade made up of a “Hup,” and “Olds”, two “Chevies” and a Ford started for Sedona as the first stopping place. The Ford, belonging to Ferdy, started in the lead and held this place for the simple reason that the driver was fair enough to give other cars half of the road. He took his half in the center. Everyone but those in the two “Chevies” reached Sedona in record time and immediately a council was held con­ cerning these delayed cars, some suggested writing to General Motors to beg them to build faster cars and seme wanting to go back and look for them. Just as the sug­ gestions threatened to become radical, the missing links pulled up and explained that one car had a flat tire and that the spare from the other had had to be used in its place. When all had quieted down a little, and Willie had said that the ground in Coconino County was quite a bit harder than that in Yavapai, (proved to him by two nicely executed ‘‘spills”) doo-flag (could hardly be called a conference) was held and it was decided to travel up Oak Creek Canyon.

The cavalcade again started out and after many hard bumps, discouraging futher travel, Banjo Bill Park was reached and again everyone stopped and discussed the matter of continuing farther.

As this place was cold and in the shade, it was decided to go on up to Camp Old Glory. On the way up those in the Ford became rather doubtful whether they were still on the road or whether they had mistaken a cow-path for the main afrtery of travel, so, upon seeing two woodcutters by the road, stopped and asked how the roads were farther up. The men kept straight faces and ungloriously replied that the roads were in fine condition. Somewhat doubting their word, the Ford again stopped a few miles farther up, and its occupants questioned another man. He unpatriotically said that what there was of them were fine, but that it was easy to get off. Soon after this, “Old Glory" was reached, and some of the boys began throwing a log across the creek to serve as a bridge. After John had waded out to steer it, one of the chap­ erones declared that she thought the place too cold for a picnic and started back to Sedona. The "Olds” also started and as all the “eats” were in these two cars, there was nothing to do but follow.

Upon our arrival, Dave told us that Big Park was close, and a good place to go for a picnic. Junior was then driving the "Olds” and he started out in the lead. It was at this point that our cavalcade turned into a driving and exploring expedition with Junior as the leading "bohunk”. He gallantly led us over rocks, rills, and troubled hills for seven miles and ended on a dry prairie without a drop to drink. Another consultation was held and all decided to go back, as gas and ambition to be explorers were decidedly low. On the way back Junior managed to hit a so-called “small hole” and wrecked a tire. This afforded his sympathetic class-mates a chance to condole with him which they did almost too frequently until Junior somewhat doubted their feelings for his troubles. This cost the expedition many minutes and it was close to one o’clock when the expedition was finally changed back to a picnic party and took the short road to river glade.

Once here the meal was hurried and all ate well. Some of the boys took old pep rally decorations out of the Ford rumble seat and made a volley ball net. The aft­ ernoon was merrily spent playing volley ball, listening to Bunny’s phonograph, singing, accompanied by his uke or in various other ways.

This jolly gathering was rudely interrupted by the lowly mooing of a “Bossy” and thus we were warned that evening was on us. Amid many howls of joyful anticipa­ tion, our last bit of punch and eatables were prepared. The scraps were gulped down in record time and drivers anxiously scanned the gas gauges wondering if - - - -?

At last the expedition "shoved off” and it was a tired but very happy bunch of Seniors that entered the town of Clarkdale just as the last rays of the setting sun shone over Mount Mingus, thus ending the best “Ditch Day” ever.

CALENDAR OF C-H-S 1929-30 SEPT. 3—School started off with a bang. New teachers, kids *n everything.

SEPT. 5—The honorable class of the school, the seniors, had a picnic over at the lake and make up rules and regulations for the younger generation.

SEPT. 6—The timid Frosh and the Clemenceau Sophs had a pleasant stroll to the “C” where plenty of white wash was used. The unselfish seniors have promised another trip about Christmas time.

SEPT. 13—On Friday 13th these meek school mates of ours were made acquainted with the ten commandments and on this event they were entertained at the hands of the Seniors.

SEPT. 17—Three cheers for the circus. We got the afternoon off to go to the circus but some didn’t get there. Some of the boys took the morning off and consequently the kind hearted principal gave them several days off.

SEPT. 18—The new school bus arrived today, and ‘she’ is some beauty. The janitor has been requested to put her in her red flannels every night.

SEPT. 24—School votes on a standard Senior Class Ring.

SEPT. 25—Meeting held to pick rings, two representatives from each class.

OCT. 2—A Dramatic Club was organized today, under the supervision of Miss Gladys Martin.

OCT. 4—Scouts give a hot party.

OCT. 8—Hiking Club for boys was organized under the supervision of Mr. Clarence Will­ iam Kahm.

OCT. 9—A Pep Club was re-organized by a few members of the Pep Club of last year, with Miss Celia Merill, advisor.

OCT. 10—We are never allowed to forget three and six week exams.

OCT. 11—It was decided upon to have a Pep Rally on this moonlit eve, but for reasons unknown it “fell through” so a few boys and girls who had some excess ambition and who still had a little bit of school spirit left, made a trip to the “C” and made a big bonfire and sang songs. The folks from the valley said that it looked “swell.”

Well if it did or if it didn’t, it was loads of fun.

OCT. 12—Today was the big event. We all nearly burst with pride, when we saw our heroes dash madly down the grid with the “pigskin”. Of course we won, we couldn’t have done anything else. Tonight the different clubs went together and gave a party in honor of Williams, but our guests failed to remain. Anyway we had a good time by ourselves dancing and drinking sour punch.

OCT. 14—A Senior Class meeting was called today and much to the girls’ amazement the boys finally decided to order the rings.

OCT. 16—Game with Flag, believe me we sure showed ’em how to play football.

OCT. 20—Seats in assembly were assigned by Mr. Howard.

NOV. 11—Game with Jerome. Yea! Clarkdale! By the way! We also got a half holiday.

Oh, of course we beat Jerome, like nobody’s business.

NOV. 12—The Home Economics Club gave a luncheon for the Superintendents and Principals of Prescott, Jerome, Clemenceau and Clarkdale. The Auto Mechanics Training classes entertained in Forum.

NOV. 13.—Miss Martin and Miss Rayle supervised a program given in Forum by a group of High School people. The theme of the day was “Know Your School.”

CALENDAR OF C-H-S 1929-30 NOV. 15—Today a quite unusual program was given in Forum under the supervision of Miss Johnson and Miss Watson. The title of the series of scenes was called “The Dream of Life.” Most every grade in school helped out in the program.

NOV. 16—Miss Eliot’s debate squad put on a debate this morning in Forum. The sub­ ject for debate was “Resolved That Health in School is Just As Important as Eng­ lish.”

NOV. 18—Seniors started to have their pictures taken today.

NOV. 19—Bunny Keller had his leg fractured today, when alumnus Miller tackled him during scrimmage.

NOV. 20—Keller back at school on crutches, weak and pale but happy to be alive.

NOV. 22—Annual Staff gave a play in Forum today. We sure kept them in suspense until the last minute.

NOV. 23—Dance given in recognition of the winning of the Northern Arizona Champ­ ionship. Proceeds went to the fund for buying gold footballs for the boys.

NOV. 27—Thanksgiving Program under the supervision of Miss Martin was given in Forum, by a few members of the High School. Mr. Howard graciously announced the vacation today.

NOV. 28—Game with Glendale. We sure gave ’em a run for their money. Big turkey feed for all.

DEC. 2—Home Economics start clothes for poor children, and dressing Christmas dolls.

DEC. 6—Junior Play. “The Goose Mangs High," a real success.

DEC. 9—Home Economics Club make fruit cakes.

DEC. 13—Dramatic Club Play starring Jack Hughes as the perfect lover in "Saving Dad.”

DEC. 18—Dramatic Club party in Home Economics rooms, chaperoned by Miss Johnson and Miss Martin.

DEC. 19—The High School and Junior High School Glee Clubs gave a cantata under the supervision of Miss Merrill.

DEC. 20—For one afternoon we were allowed to forget school and have a nice Christ­ mas tree and party. Mr. Kahm played Santa Claus. “Now don’t say there ain’t no Santa Claus.” We were favored by a program given by the Junior High.

DEC. 21—Christmas Vacation—besides having the flu we are all having a keen time.

DEC. 23—Today we lost one of our Sophomore girls, Mildred Manis, as she em­ barked upon the sea of matrimony. Big Christmas Dance also among day’s fes­ tivities.

DEC. 24—All of the College boys are home and we poor girls are losing souvenirs by the car load.

DEC. 31—JAN 1—A grand old celebration that we had last night. I wonder how a lot of us feel this morning.

JAN. 6—Of course something or someone always has to take the joy out of living.

All good things must come to a sad close and so did our vacation and now we are back at the same old grind.

JAN. 7—The Old Weather Man has jarred loose and shed a few flakes of snow on us.

Hoorah! Heh! Heh! JAN. 23—The program has been changed and now boys and girls have Physical Educa­ tion five days a week.

FEB. 19—The basketball team left today for Flagstaff to compete in Northern Arizona Tournament.

FEB. 23—They returned today. Did we make a showing—and how! We showed Flag­ staff that we could beat ’em, when the team was in good running order.

FEB. 26—The boys left this morning for Tucson to compete in state basketball tourna­ ment where they are “gonna strut their stuff.”

FEB. 27—Well, well and we beat Flag again. Are we hot, and how?

MAR. 4—Debate team to Flag. Defeated Snowflake 2 to 1.

MAR. 7—A big bombardment of carrots, etc. were showered on the Clemenceau Sophmores by some mighty senior boys. Was there trouble about it? Oh, no! Nothing resulted except the loss of ten days at the end cf school.

MAR. 10—Mr. Howard has changed his mind and has given the boys a week’s deten­ tion instead of taking their vacation away.

MAR. 13—Sophmore boys won inner-class basketball.

MAR. 14—Debate team to Prescott today.

MAR. 15—As we expected, we won the debate with flying colors.

MAR. 21—The biggest success of the season and seasons to come and the ones gone by —The Senior Class Play—"Seven Keys to Baldpate.”

MAR. 28—Senior Ditch Day! Did we make whoopee Did we fool ’em, and how? Plenty good chaperons and a swell place. Don’t ask. After lots of roaming around the Red Rock country—incidently up to Oak Creek Lodge and back past Big Park— (thanks to Junior) we finally ended up at River Park and ate—80 buns and 80 wiennies and punch and coffee and—well lots anyhow. Leave it to these Seniors to have plenty of fun.

APRIL 4—The operetta was given by the High School Glee Clubs directed by Miss Celia Merrill and assisted by Miss Rayle and Miss Goure.

APRIL 16—The Senoir Hop, the biggest and best dance this year. marks of a “real” party.

They all look so happy and yet we all know very well that they are just a little bit sad at the thought that this will be their last night together. Commencement exer­ cises are very beautiful, but there is always a look of sadness.
