The bells softly tolled the hour of twelve, and my head was bowed over my work, for there is no rest or peace for the ·writer of stories and sentimental verse. As I glanced at the calendar on my desk I observed it was June 11, 1946. Twenty years ago I had proudly received my diploma from the Clarkdale High School. I picked up the latest copy of Who's Who in America, and opened it at random. The first name that caught my eye was Flynn, James E. It was with astonishment that I read, "Sec­ retary of War of the United States." I realized I was very much behinct in political affairs. But I was delighted to find that he enjoyed this position, for what Irishman does not enjoy anything connected with a fight? This aroused my curiosity and I decided to see how many of my classmates I could find in this worthy volume.

Mary Giordano was the leader of the most famous jazz orchestra in the world. George Haskins was the director of the Famous-Lasky Players in Hollywood. Lewis Miller had taken up the study of drama and was one of the most noted actors of the country. It was recorded that he brought more business to the post office than any other individual, due to the letters he received from love-stricken maidens. Lewis Berti was an archi­ tect and he was at the present time constructing the thirty story building on the corner of Main in Clarkdale. Karl Bloom had ceased trying to phophesy the weather and everything else, and was now a famous violinist. Lynn Pace was a construction engineer, who had constructed the bridge across the Atlantic Ocean. Billy Black is the athletic coach at Yale University and they have held the football championship for ten years. I was not at all surprised to see that Margaret Sullivan had gone in for the silent drama, and was the most beloved star in America. Bere­ nice Evans has become a fashion model and receives more salary than the president o.f the United States. John Winters had but recently become the editor-in-chief of College Humor. Marcus Reed was the dancing master of the largest dancing establishment in Los Angeles. Floyd Tilson has become the chaplain of the United States Senate, and has written many books on the subject of World Peace. I next observed the name of Margaret Andrews Thompson Riley Jones, retired English teacher of Clarkdale High School. Sumner Jordan is an excellent magazine illustra­ tor, I know for I would rather have him illustrate my stories than anyone in this country. Lloyd Wilhite is the Scout Master of the United States.

Marie Wombacher this year received the world's championship by writing 195 words a minute. Vera York is happily wedded to the secretary of war. Clarence Wombacher is the cowboy movie hero of the world. Ernes­ tine is the athletic coach and physical education director at Bryn Mawr.

Walter Shanahan is the richest man in the United States. No one knows just how he made his money. Bill Haskins' name was the last that I read and I found that he too had artistic talents.

As I read the last name, my eyes closed in slumber, but my dreams were very pleasant for I dreamed of the success that the class of '26 had brought to C. H. S. -Beatrice Chivers.

To look upon the mighty men and fair ladies of the large senior class, you would never guess that the first school which they attended was a srnail gray chmch, in ,, hich one teacher taught all grades. Here the noble clam of '26 was rrnresentecl by little Peggy Sullivan and "Shorty" llaskiJJs. then very short indeed. Next year they were joined by Beatrice Chivers, who caffe in from the farm driving a burro team. Bill Haskins a 1 so joined in tlrnt year. In the fourth grade, the class was much bright­ ened by the appearance of Vera York and her red head.

It wa5 not until tl:e sixth grade that Marie tired of her solitary life on Cherry and journeyed to the metropolis of Clarkdale. Margaret An­ dre1Ys joined us in the seventh grade but left again in the eighth. Mary Giordano tired of the high altitude and came down from Jerome.

In the eighth grade sv:eet music was heard in the distance and as it drew nearer we observed a little boy with a marcel w · hich would mal{e all beauty parlors envious. This ·was little Lewis Berti. who had come all the 1rny from Italy to have the honor of being in our class.

Then came the memorable year when we all donned beanies and began to talk in scornful accents of the "little grader" for now we were full­ fledged high school students. This year was also notable in that there was added to om ranks Karl Bk>om, the sage from Cottonwood, the Honorable James E. Flynn of Clemenceau, John Winters whose talents are innumer­ able, and our Irishman, Shannie. Clarkdale also received two of Califor­ nia's fairest daughters, Ernestine and Berenice.

In our sophomore year, we were joined by Lloyd Wilhite from Montana. Our junior year was a big year. We were joined by Lewis Miller who had tired of the sulphur smoke of the smelter and decided to honor us with his presence. "Cherry" Wombacher realized that a farmer's life wasn't an unalloyed joy and came into the class. Margaret Andrews decided to stop her 1·oving and came back. All year the whole class worked on the prom and banquet until we thought and dreamed of nothing but food. Ho,wever, the .i unior prom came off ,vonderfully and left us all feeling a little ( ?) proud. , In om senior year two bills came to us but not the unwelcome kind.

They were Bill Haskins and Billie Black.

When we were frosh we had Miss Mor·se as class advisor, but for three years Miss Newsom has sbared all our woes and joys, and with her assist­ ance we have overcume all our difficulties, even civics. And we know that here in C. H. S. "e have spent some of th� happiest days of our lives, and all our hopes are that we ·may do that which will make C. H. S. proud of the clnss of '26.

There are many kinds of sportsmanship. Many places in the world _ 1�here 1t can be used to an advantage but of all these places there is none like the good fellowship shown in one's school life.

rhe e�rly _sunoun�ings o! a per �on will always have a great effect on h1 � entll'e \ife. :VVhlle pupils _are 111 the gramrr.ar school they do not take mto cons1derat10n the mean111g of such a word. They only think of it as a long word whic_h �hey have io learn to spell. They know, though, or should kr.ow, that it 1s wrong to cheat or gain their ends by unfair methr.ds. This is a training or lessen as one might say, which should be taught at home.

When students are entering high school they are then old enough to know what sportsmanship means. They should then know enough to take into consideration the true and real meaning; not only the definition given in the dictionary but another meaning, a meaning which is not written, only felt and understood.

If one were told that such-and-such a person \\"as a good sportsman, riuite often he does not only think of the written meaning but he thinks of the many friends that this person has. A thought flashes through his mind which tells ;him that there is a person ·who has more friends, a broader view of life, higher moral standards than the average person.

It must be so. How could it be otherwise? He is one who can play a fair game and win or lose as the case might be w�thout being beaten.

He can never be defeated. He might lose to his opponents but what does that matter to him, his soul can never be conquered. He can go into the next battle just as undaunted as before, and he can win, and win fairly.

What does the cheering of the multitudes mean to a pers:m ,vhen it comes to a clean conscience. He can see his opponent win by underhanded tricks and be cheered and cheered. But in his heart he knows that he has played fair so what does it matter. His conscience is clean and unstained and he can face the world with a smile. His opponent cannot do this because he knows that he has don-e wrong. It is a vvrong that cannot be righted; others may forget it but the doer of such an action can never forget.

After one leaves his high schc-::>I and goes out to face the world he will appreciate, then, more than e·1er the training that he has acquired in his school life, because he will find that not only is sportsmanship shown in hi<Yh school life but it is to be shown every day. Life is one contest afte; another and one must have ready trafoing to meet the daily tests that come his way.

EXPELLED FROM C. H. S. The day is dark and dreary, And I am all alone, And my heart is sad and lonely, And as cold as the coldest stone.

I thought at first she loved me, In those days when first we met, But now she says she hates me, But I can't help but love her yet.

She turned me from her bosom, To the cold hard world outside, Saying there I must live forever, Saying there l must abide.

I wanted her to take me back To love and treat me as her child, But she was harsh and cruel, And her feeling is making me wild.

You will wonder why I was sent away, 'Tis a story that I shall tell, I acted like a child 'Tis a thing I know full well.

I was sitting in my chair one day Studying as my brain might allow When plunk! came a spitwad across the room And I up and hollered, Wow!

But the teacher was busy reading, And didn't notice the noise.

Oh, if only I'd had a rock I'd have thrown it at those boys.

But I went right on a studying As a nice little girl should do But the giggles all over the room Made me do something new.

I rolled a nice little spit wad Covered it well with gum, And slammed it across the room; One should have heard it hum.

But alas! It hit the teacher Right on top of the head.

Oh, that terrible look she gave me, Why I thought I would drop dead.

"Now you may go to the office," She says in an unpleased voice.

"I'd be ashamed to start such commotion And cause such a lot of noise."

I went to the office meekly, My sentence there to await, But I did not have to wait long, 'Cause Mac is never late.

I was sent home that same hour, And was told that I should never return, I could stay at home and work, If I couldn't go to school and learn.

Now you know my troubles, It was my school that turned me away, And I have never gone back again ever since that clay.

But I love the clear old C. H. S. Even though I'm not welcome there, For I did wrong in the beginning, To ruin that teacher's hair.

Yes, her hair was com1Jletely ruined, And somehow it made me glad, Because it was those boys' fault, And they made me awfully mad.

But now when I'm alone, With all my life to live, I hold not a single grudge Toward that school that was willing to give.

It would hi1ve given me knowledge, That would help me in later life, To fight and win through all Despite the battle and strife.

But I was not willii1g to accept it, When anger stood in the path, So now I must take the payment, In turn for my fit of wrath.

And live alone forever, And battle against all strife, Because that school can't help me, To a higher station in life.

I JUST TOOJ{ A CHANCE College was going to be such a wonderful experience, thought Jean as she watched the ever changing landscape through the window of the observation car. There would probably be a crowd of college students cheering, as the train ar¡ew in, welcoming all new-comers and making them feel at home.

"Tucson! Ten more minutes," shouted the porter.

Jean felt thrilled. Was it really true? Was such a wonderful thing really going to happen to her? Yes, for even now they were pulling i n at the station. Ah! there were the crowds, just as she had expected.

But as she alighted, she noticed that there was no cheering, everyone seemed to be ¡welcoming their own particular friends. Suddenly Jean felt as though her legs were not able to support her. She felt limp, all her feeling of joy was gone and instead of feeling at home, she was wishing that her mother was there. What was the matter with her?

Nonsense, she wasn't a bit homesick, she just felt a little strange. She found herself trying to swallo,v the rising lump in her throat, when"Why hello there, Jean! This is surely a surprise. Are you going to college, too?"

"Why-er, that is, YES! I am so glad to see you, did you come in on this train?"

A very nice looking boy was speaking to her, one she had never seen before, but he probably knew her, or how could he have said her name and been so nice? And since he knew her, why shouldn't she enjoy his company?

He took her to the bus, and they were both taken to the university.

Jean saw much of the young fellow during the next few months. She made several discoveries. One was that his name was Russel, and another that he thought she had been on a great 51any excursions and parties, of which she had no memory. But she didn't care, she understood now that Russel mistook her for someone else, whom he had evidently known very well.

As the end of the school year drew near, sne realized that she must tell the truth before Russel should find her out. And if she didn't give some explanation, what kind of a girl would he think she was? Going with a young man she had never met before, and pretending to be a good friend of his. The next evening she forced herself to come to the point.

"Russel," she gulped-she hated to lose his friendship-"Russel."

"Yeh? Dij a want something?"

"No, yes, I mean I just wanted to tell you, I never did see you before until that day at the depot."

"Well, I never saw you before then either."

"What? Why-how did you know my name, how could you dare speak to me?"

"Well--er, you see I, well it wasn't as I had thought it would be. I had expected to be met by a crowd of cheering students, and all that you know, and you looked as though you felt pretty much the same way. I saw your name on your baggage, and, well I just took a chance."

GROWTH It is easy to climb when the strong hands lift, It is easy to go where the waters drift; But it tests the sinew and tries the bone To climb to the heights when you climb alone; And your back must bend with a breaking strain When 'gainst the tide your port you gain.

A SENIOR LUNCHEON It was the evening after the night before, a warm sultry evening.

Dave Hogan sat before a table heavily loaded with food. Dave had been out the night cefore. He had had a whiz of a time, but, oh heck! four hours sleep wasn't enough for any human. He yawned and things began to grow fainter in his vision. At last they all disappeared but his plate and the food on it. His head dropped to his shoulder and his eyes closed.

On one side of the plate was a lettuce leaf, cool and refreshing. Yes this surely was, Mary Giordano, small, delicate and always the same. The mayonnaise en the lettuce, oily but tasty, took the form of Berenice Evans, inclined to be stout bnt pleasant and friendly toward all. An onion, so strong his eyes smarted, which was in the farm of Beatrice Chivers and carrnts, Vera York, who has auburn hair. Lewis Miller, beef steak, which was nice and juicy. Salmon fish, Lynn Pace and Lloyd Wilhite.

"Dave, for goodness $ake ciuit your dreaming and eat your dinner."

Once more Dave yawned.

"Alright, mother, but gee that was a funny dream."

STATIC

Seated one day in the study hall, Weary and ill at ease, There came to me a babbling call, The sounds I heard were these: Lloyd was loudly chewing his gum, Masticating with joy, While Billye's pen scratched rapidly­ Writing notes to a boy.

Chester loudly blows his nose, And Lewis lowly whistles, Peg Sullivan paints her lips rose, And Marjorie speaks of thistles.

Marcus beats time on the floor, To the latest tune, While Karl's laughter comes out loud, And Jack is trying¡ to spcon.

A newspaper rattles, a book falls down, And a door slams with a bang, Ah, Heck, I'll have to stop, The darn old bell just rang.

WHAT WE LEARN IN CIVICS What do you learn in civics, my dear, The father asked his child, A little of everything I fearThe answer was sweet and mild.

We learn who is the king of Spain, And why the country's dry, To chew gum gives your teacher a pain, And the kind of stock to buy.

Why money is, and what it's for, And how to keep it, too, Who plays baseball, and what's the score, And why roses are not blue.

To speak and smile intelligently, And walk with gentle grace, To run a government good and free, And the best rouge for your face.

We study as well as we know how, We do our very best, What is to be, what was and is 110,v; Miss Newsom teaches the rest.

FORUM Ot1r student body is much larger this year, clue to the addition of the junior high to our ranks.

The Forum, for t.he first semester, took the ))]ace of Glee Club, Orches­ tra, Dramatic, and all other cluts. Dm-ing that time, several very inter­ esting programs were presenter! by members of the student body.

A greater measme of student body rule is being given through the Forum each year, and it serves now, more than ever, to bind the interests of all.

The social activities of the school are carried on through the Forum and all events are of highest interest.

DRAMATIC CLUB

The Dramatic Club of 1926, under the supervision of Miss Gladys Martin, is in its fifth year of existence.

The club nid not meet until the second semester, but now it has been recognized and is looking forward to a successful future.

Members of the Dramatic Club ente1-tained the Forum with a St. Patrick's Day program.

"Adam and Eva," a. school play to be giv.en during commencement ,rnek, will be the leadi,ng feature of the club.

GLEE CLUB

The Girls' Glee Club was not organized until the second semester due to the absence of an instructor.

Although the club is not large, it is steadily improving under the splendid director, Miss Davey. The first public appel;lrance of the club, was at the May Day .Musical.

THE ORCHESTRA The orchestra due to the absence of a director, did not .begin its work until the second s�mester. Once started, it has improved rapidly, under the direction of Miss Davey.

We have not heard much from the C. G. Club this year, but from the various meetings they have held throughout the year we knovv that they are still functioning. The club is now in its second year's existence.

The members of the club are planning to present to the Forum a plaf entitled, "Not to the Swift." Miss Wilson was sponsor of the club.

THE GIRL RESERVE ORGANIZATION The Girl Reserve is a part of the national and international movement of the Young Women's Christian Association. The Blue Triangle, as it is called, is already known throughout the world today and by wearing it here in America a girl is sharing the responsibility of girls throughout the world, and is helping to bring about the mngdom of Friendly citizens.

The Girl Reserves of Clarkdale ha.ve been organized two years and is composed of two sections with twenty members each-the Junior High School Triangle and the Senior High School Club.

The girls strive to live up to the Girl Reservâ&#x201A;Ź Code and purpose of the Blue Triangle.

In the schools of today athletics have reached a point where it is considered as one of the leading phases of school work. The educators of the present time have come to the conclusion that physical development is as essential as mental development.

In order to secure these results, &tate organizations are formed to promote interscholastic athletics. Thus, a desirable way of giving to the younger Americans that training and development which is essential to a healthy and prosperous people.

FOOTBALL

The football season began with a bang as there were nine letter men and a score of new material. We also hD.cl Coach Goodsell with us, whose ambition was to produce a strong team.

This was the second time in the history of C. H. S. that a champion­ ship team was put out and which was successful in winning a majority of the games.

Georg,e Haskins, (Quarter Back), "Shorty."

With past experience and knowledge of the game. He leaves C. H. S. with a reputation of being on two N. A. C. teams.

Walter Shanahan, (Full Back), "Shannie."

The fa�test and hardest �itter on the team. Shannie is the only man with the honor of bemg on C. H. S.. football teams four years.

Earl Twitty, (Right Half), "Red Grange."

He won honors for his school and will pilot his team of '26.

Lloyd Wilhite, (Left Half).

The littlest, smallest, quickest and surest yard gainer in the team of '25. He graduates this year.

Robert Manis, (Right End), "Bud." From the marshes of Mississippi comes Robert fo nab those long passes and score a touch clown. He has one more year.

Louis Berti, (Right Guard).

Bring on your all-state guards, we have one to equal, for Berti has played guard for two years.

Louis Miller, (Center), "Garbage."

Garbage's three years at this position for C. H. S. has shown him to he one of the most valuable players. He graduates this year.

Fred Twitty, (Left Guard) .

By hard fighting and determination Fred won the guard position.

Clarence Wombacher, (Left Tackle). · Hits 'em hard and knocks 'em cold. That's what always happened anyway. He graduates this year.

Jant'es Flynn, (Left End).

Two years experience made ,Tim one of the hardest tacklers and surest men to receive passes on the team. He bids farewell to C. H. S. this year.

Lynn Pace, (Tackle and Captain).

"Pace" could always be depended upon to do his part whether it was tackling opening a hole 01· bucking the line. He was a steady, husky fighte� and was as the captain should be-the best.

One of t�e largest squads of candidates that ever appeared for any . lme of athletics came out for basketball.

Coach Goodsell with good judgment soon elected his squad of ten men to represent the school.

Clarence Wombacher, (Center).

Ch_errie ha� played a� t �is position for two years and was a high pomt man m the maJonty of games. This is his last year.

George Haskins, (Forward).

Shorty was a sure point man and one of the steadiest players on the team. He leaves this year.

Chester .Jones, (Forward).

Chet sprung a great spn)rise when he showed his great ability as forward in the Jerome game. He will be a strengthening factor in the team next yeai'.

Lloyd Wilhite, (Guard).

He was probably the fastest and cleverest man on the team. This is his last year.

Lynn Pace, (Guard, Captain).

"Big Pace" was the most dependable and steady man on the team.

It was very nearly impossible to get by him as opposing forwards will say. This is his last year.

Her ability as a guard and her courage and cheerfulness has been a great asset to the girls.

Sadie Mae Howard, (Guard).

She has proved her ability as a guard, in basketball. her first year.

This is Ernestine's last year. For three years she nas fought faithfully for C. H. S. She will be greatly missed.

Julia Benatz, (Running Center).

Julia always played an intelligent game. Clarkdale will have her one more year.

Jewel Chism, (Left Forward).

This was Jewel's first year. She seldom missed a basket. We are sure that next year she will be a star. . ,Berenice Evans, (Right Forward).

Berenic-e Evans has played two years for Clarkdale and has always been very loyal. C. H. S. will miss her next year.

V'era York, (Substitute).

This was her first and last year. She was always ready to fight hard.

Marian Bergman, (Substitute).

Marian had hard luck this year but she has shown that she has ability and we are sure she "ill be a great asset to Clarkdale next year.

Berenice Kent, (Substitute).

This is her first year. She has two more years in which her support to the team.

Miss. Johnson, the coach, has been the most ardent and loyal of work-ers. She has worked with the girls, and has made them reach the highest standard of good clean play.

Girls' Basketball this year has been mor-e successful than in recent years, though the girls seem to be followed by hard luck. They have put up the good fight and the clean sportsmanship which they have displayed throughout the games has endeared them to the heart of all Clarkdalians.

We are proud of the girls, and exceedingly proud of the fact that there were five of them made letters this year.

According to the "Humoristicke," a comic weekly printed in Prague, a teacher asked a young pupil, "What is a creditor."
