ANY years ago in the dim and distant _past, in a s�all drab _ school house two wee frightened httle girls began theff career in the first 0-rade of the Clarkdale schools. Little did they, Martha Mar}� and Florence, know that upon them had been be­ stowed the distinction of chartering the Class of '25. Their infant minds were engrossed with greater problems as those of Tom Thumb Weddings and Mother Goose Rhymes.

The following year first signs of wandering spirit were developed.

Florence wandered to some far-off place beyond the boundaries of Clark­ dale and a loquacious youngster answering to the name of Weinie, not be­ cause she bore any relation to canines, but merely a diminutive for Irene, wandered into her place. Not only did the members of the class display a wandering spirit, but the class as a whole uprooted itself from the little gray school house and took up its abode in another d,velling. When the problems of the second grade were overcome, these ladies of learning ad­ vanced to a higher plane-the third grade. Here, after migrating to the new school building, they were joined by Angelina, hoping that the sul­ phur fumes of Clarkdale might be more conducive to beauty than the mountain breezes of Jerome. Then Myron with perversity of all men, came frJm California, interrupting the girls' plan of instituting a class "For Ladies Only," and added another to the pioneers of '25.

It was in the fourth grade that the Class really began to display unusual ability. No new members who remained throughout the twelve years of toil were added but the Class succeeded in winning an attendance trophy in the form of the "Aurora" which now adorns the main hall, in­ spiring the infants and juniors alike to follow in the footsteps of their mighty elders.

This little group pushed steadily upward and outward, for again they journeyed to new surroundings in the new building. Their number here was augmented by the arrival ·of Betty, who astonished her class­ mates by her ability to expound for hours on the wisdom of using dill pickles in the preparation of pork sausages.

The minority faction of the Class was increased by the arrival of Johnny in the seventh grade, but still the fair sex maintained the most prominent position, for -on reaching the eighth grade Florence returned, a dancing class was instituted, which in the light of their increased social duties, the class considered most expedient. For the first time in the Clarkdale Schools, graduation exercises were planned and in striving to write class prophecies, wills, et cetera; poets, literary geniuses, artists., et cetera, sprung for�h.

By this time the fame of these youths had reached the wilds of Clemenceau and even to the Quaker state and at the beginning of the Freshman year Josephine, of the yellow curls, meek Cathern, and Adolph of sax-playing fame, entered this wonderful class.

Miss James was chosen to sponsor the class and she and the class were hosts at their first social function-the St. Patrick's Party. Algebrn and Latin were mere playthings for these youths who were possessed o:f such a high degree of intellectual prowess, so they passed from the ver­ dant age into the red radicalism of the Sophomore Class. Because of the failure of Miss James to return they were forced to choose another mem­ ber of the faculty, Miss Wood, to be the beacon light of the Class of '25.

Evelyn entered in time to witness the momentous happening of the year­ the fire. One morning in December of this year a shrill siren call floated out on the early morning air, and red flames, very much in harmony with Sophomore temperament, shot out of the auditorium windows. The de­ molishing of assembly room did not deter these worthy students in their ability to adapt themselves to any surroundings, for they carried on classes in any available room.

On reaching the Junior year they assumed the necessary amount of dignity for upper· Classmen. Another class sponsor, Miss Spellman, suc­ ceeded Miss Wood, and preparations for an elaborate prom and banquet were begun. Fate again intervened, not in the form of a fire, but a small­ pox epidemic instead, and hopes of all s·orts were abandoned. However restrictions were raised and an eleventh hour banquet was given on the Tennis Courts. It proved the crowning event of the year, due to the lack of other commencement activities.

Finally the members of the Class of '25, by constant striving, scaled the heights of knowledge and became "reverend, wise and potent Seniors." So great was their prestige that the Juniors and Alumni wished to be in this "Class of Classes." In fact some of these wishes were realized for the class now holds two three-year students, Annabelle and Patricia, and Louise who waited a year in order to be a member of the Class of '25.

Mary, Earl and Orval also entered this year. Yellow curls have been_ clip­ ped and meekness is no more, for in a fe\V weeks these students will go out into the world carrying fond memories of high school days and Miss Finch who has guided them so wisely and well in their last year in the -Irene Wade, '25 best of Alma Maters-C. Father Time is meditating, thinking, won­ dering what is held in store for a group of 17 students, who, ten years ago, on the fourth day of June, were graduated from their dear Old Alma Mater, Clarkdale High School. Not only is Old Father Time concentrating. There are 12 famous women and five famous men, who do likewise. But they think not of the future and the many things they have yet to conquer.

They recall only the ten years and what has happened during that span of time, wondering where their classmates are and what they have accom­ plished.

Let us now draw back the curtain, and may the crystal gazer tell us the story of these noble Seniors, who have trod forth to benefit the world with all their glory.

John Richards, a tall robust man with a few streaks of grey hair, is raving about his office, he is deep in thought, exploding now and then, with a fP,w strong words, because of a misprint made by one of his printers.

John has a record of never letting a mistake be found in any of the seven newspapers of which he is editor.

"Where in the world is that reporter of mine? He's late again; guess I'll have to call him up."

And we see Johnny ringing the 'phone most furiously.

"Two, four, six, eight, please. Right. Hello, is this Mr. Smith?

What? Who? The Davey Conservatory of Music? Say, what Davey is this?

What? Martha Mary? Say, is this Martha Mary speaking?"

John seemed to recognize the voice.

"Well then who is it? Who ·7 Florence Kranso? Well, what are you doing there."

And far off at the· other end of the line which central had made such fortunate connection, we see Fluff, a little older in age, but not in her childish actions. She is greatly flustered at her mysterious telephone ca1ler and demands to know the cause of his personal inquisitiveness.

"Well, I am Miss Davey's private secretary. Did you have some business or are you only trying to annoy someone?"

J-ohn's creaking voice comes back over the wire, showing great anxiety.

"No, no, don't you know me? I'm Johnny, John W. Richards."

Florence's mouth opened to an unusual size, while she dropped the receiver, only to find difficulty in picking it up and again placing it to her ear. ."Yes, yes, I know you. Martha Mary! How are you Johnny?

Come here quick, here's John Richards."

Martha Mary, a tall, slender lady covered with sun spots, enters with a fiddle in one hand and mouth organ in the other humming, "My

Wild Irish Rose." She drops the instrnments upon hearing her old class­ mate's name and rushes for the telephone, which Flossie holds with out­ stretched hands. Her well cultured voice fairly sings over the wire, and Johnny's heart would have been all a flutter, had his wife not been present.

"Hello, John, it surely seems good to hear your voice again. give you time to talk but I want to ask you so many things."

"Well, go ahead, and talk, I can't, my wife's here," she heard Mr. Richards softly whisper.

And so we leave a part of our class happily discussing their past and future.

But here another picture takes form in the chaos of the crystal.

Slowly we see the outline develop, and Irene Wade stands waving a baton through various designs and motions, teaching a group of professors rhetoric in the I. Wade Conservatory of Rhetoric and Composition of Berlin.

And as that vision fades from view another comes to take its place.

Evelyn Heinle is the chief oriental dancer for King Tut of India. Patricia is also in his harem. Many other beautiful maidens envy her as the king falls hard for those big brown eyes, which she rolls around most beguil­ ingly. But lo! who is it that makes such enchanting music? Ah! no one else than Adolph Orrantia, with a brand new saxophone made especially for him by a branch office of the I. ·wade Conservatory of Rhetoric and Composition. "Jack" fairly tickles the king's feet with the notes as they bound forth from the bell of his sax, in a melody, most entrancing, which he calls "Hoodly Boo Who."

But behold! Our scene changes and we are once more back to America, back to the United States, our native land.

There is om fair little Josephine Langdon writing unconsciously the initials ''B. T." as her thoughts return to her former happy high school days. We see her "come to" with a start and immediately apologize to her pupils for not fulfilling the requirements as a modern day pedagogue should do. While way out in Wyoming there is some tall creature hung by a nail to a post, waving and kicking his feet most furiously. As the clouds of the crystal fade, we see Orval Shanuel in a ten-gallon hat, yelling for someone to help him down from the height to which he was just pitched by his favorite pony.

But who is it that comes to his ass"istance, surely that isn't Earl Corley. A second glance tells us for sure that we were not mistaken, for Earl is running toward Orval with leaps and bounds.

"Say, Orval, did you ever hear this one?" And he proceeds to tell him one of his favorite "jokes."

But why should Earl be dressed in a swallow-tailed coat and high silk derby? There can be ·only one explanation, his dreams have come true, he has been chief janitor at the White House and made his fortune.

Now he has retired to live an easy life.

Again the crystal becomes cloudy, only to clear once more and bring forth another setting, with new characters.

We are now looking into the Cathannalina Typewriter Manufac­ turing Company. Catherine Deets is president and janitor of the most prosperous concern. Annabelle Jones is vice-president and master-me­ chanic, while Angelina Knezovitch does all the light and heavy work. case?"

"Say, Annabelle, have you heard anything about Betty Chism's "Yes, Cathern, she was granted a divorce."

"Well, what happened to the twins?"

"Oh, she gave them to the hubby, couldn't be bothered with 'em."

"And what is she going to do now?"

"Don't know."

Here Angelina comes to the rescue, "I heard she was going back to her old job as a journalist."

Kate again chimes in by asking what the disturbance is in front of the building.

Annabelle looks in amazement from the window to an immense crowd waving their hats and canes as a little dark girl mounts the plat­ form before them.

"Oh! kids come here."

Both Kate and Angelina rush to the open window. There below them Mary Farley has taken advantage of woman suffrage and is vigor•• ously campaigning for the presidency of our nation. When she had fin-• ished her campaign speech, the three proprietors of the Cathannalina Typewriter Manufacturing Company vowed to give her their support in the coming election, as did thousands of others who rose in tumultous cheers for our first woman candidate.

As the enthusiasm of the great throng quieted, so did our picture vanish from the crystal, only to give way to another which was no less interesting.

Myron Pexton is clad in a black and white striped suit. The kind which is furnished those who disturb the peace or perform some -other evil. He has had the ill fortune of becoming a member of the establish­ ment at San Quenten. "Well," he said, as he turned to a lady visitor, "l was a prominent cartoonist, as well as a surgeon. I received an invitation to exhibit my powers of art in the form of a chalk t�lk before the president and congress. So I did ; I drew a funny picture and seven congressmen laughed themselves to death. And now I am a life prisoner, safe behind the bars."

But here our last painting by the crystal gazer is made. We see a jolly circus group and among them is one of our old classmates. Louise Howard is making a fortune. as "Large Louie," the living skeleton. She is as thin as a stick of candy. Her diet being cream and cream puffs.

The eyes of the crystal gazer have closed, he sees nothing in the crystal. The soft plush curtains are drawn and we have added to our knowledge the story of our fellow classmates of 1925.

§rqnnl §ptrtt Everyone will readily concede that it is school spirit that makes yom school what it is; or the lack of it that makes it what it isn't. But is everyone aware of the significance of school spirit or what it really is?

How can we get it if we haven't it already?

School spirit is simply good sportsmanship in the class room, in the class meeting, at school parties, on the athletic field, or on the campus.

It's plain boosting for your own school; it's treating the other fellow fairly; it's working, and enjoying it; it's trying, whether you win or lose, having done yom best for your school. Willingness to give up your place on a team to someone who excels you, and doing your best just the same is an outward expression of school spirit.

We all know sportsmanship as it is preached to us by our coaches.

That is, all of us do that have ever known the joy of working and fighting for our school in games, or the fun of going out to practice, even if you don't get a place on the team. Moreover we know that good sportsman­ ship is giving the other fellow the benefit of the doubt, and above all, it's Team Work! Or let us say, giving up glory for gain. That's all school spirit is; but there can be no real interest in school activities without it.

Well, then, it's up to us. We can do it. Fight for your school; hope; work; and above all, love it, boost for it, and give in to the other fellow when it's best.

1.i;nunr EORGE LAvVRENCE was a young man of about twenty-five years of age, who was now in Quebec, not because he wanted to be there, but because he was forced to leave the states on account of having presumedly killed a man. George was an adventurous young man, not above the average in height, with very light hair and dark eyes. He dressed neatly and was al­ ways clean shaven, and physically, he was an A-1 specimen. Lawrence had to get some kind of a position so he decided to get in the Police De­ partment there. After taking several preliminary tests he became a trooper of the Royal Northwest Mounted Police.

Lawrence had not been in the service for more than two months when Capt. James Kent called him into his offices and showed him a pic­ ture and description of a certain criminal and told him to get him. Law­ rence left that night and by morning was in the foothills of some large mountains near there, the fugitive having su1)posedly been Jiving in a cave somewhere near the top. He rested part of that day and then started -on his quest. After a while he began going more cautiously for he was near­ ing the criminal's place of refuge. As Lawrence rounded a turn in the path, he came within sight of the culprit's abode. He saw no sign of life around but nevertheless he still crept on slowly. When he came to the cave he did not at once see anything. Then in a comer he saw his prey, not in fighting condition as he had expected but lying on some filthy blankets and looking very sick. Lawrence bent over the man and to his surprise found that he w · as dead. From examination of the body death seemed to be from a knife wound in the back. He buried the man and then started back to headquarters to report.

Before Lawrence had come to Canada, he had changed his name from Harry Scott to George Lawrence. He had also growp a mustache and not purposely but accidentally, had gained a huge scar under his chin.

When Lawrence had returned to headquarters and reported all that he had seen on his quest, he was given credit for the capture of the man although fate had most to do with it. As Lawrence saluted and swung about to leave the room, Kent ordered him to remain, so Lawrence waited to see what he wanted. It was another search that he was to go -on. Kent reached in his desk and brought out some papers and a photograph con­ taining the description of the culprit and handed them to Lawrence. He looked at the picture and his face flushed and he felt faint for there, staring him in the face was the unmistakable photograph of himself. It was all he could do to remain calm but he mustered ufp courage enough to speak, saying that he would try lo do it.

When Lawrence reached his room he flung himself on his bed and did some deep thinking. His thoughts were of packing and leaving as if going after the criminal and never returning. But far back in his mind his thoughts were of what the honor of Mounted meant. He was torn between which to choose. One path lay to what, he did not know, the other to dis-

honor. That night after he had gone to bed he lay and tossed in wide-eyed sleeplessness. When morning dawned clear and bright, he thought of how he would hate to give this life up if the verdict of hanging were brought if he stayed.

The Quebec train left at 10 o'clock and in a corner of one coach sat George Lawrence, haggard of face from conscience and sleeplessness.

His eyes showed pain, and a bit of determination yet, far back in those once clear eyes, there lurked a look of fear. When the train reached Mon­ treal, Lawrence left it and went to a hotel. That night could be seen a man going swiftly down a dark alley towards the outskirts of the city, which was a place people outside the law usually congregated.

Back at the fort when La·wrence had not communicated with the captain for such a long time as to have been enough to get the man, Kent became worried and on investigating he could find no trace of him.

Kent felt downcast for he had had great confidence in Lawrence's ability and future, and the thought that Lawrence had deserted the force irritated him greatly.

Meanwhile in a dingy room in an old ramshackle house which was set far back on a degraded street, sat George Lawrence. Again he was fighting a battle within himself, and it was by no means easy. He was far different now than back at the fort in content and security; he walked with a marked stoop as if a great load were on his shoulders, his voice of old sounding so clear and ringing was a mumble. Then if someone had been watching him he would have seen his shoulders straighten and a new, true, light shining in his eyes, that of purpose.

Two days later there entered into Captain Kent's office the man that Kent had waited for many days in vain to see. He arose to grip Lawrence's hand but the look in the man's eyes stopped him. Lawrence then made his confession. He told how he had been mixed up with a gang of holdups and he refusing to help them was forced to shoot one of the gang in order to escape. And how a powerful and rich faction in the city which were in league with the crooks, had by their influence outlawed him.

Then how he fled to Canada and joined the force, and finally of his decision to take what was coming to him instead of soiling his honor.

The following week there was a trial held. Lawrence was (Pro­ nounced guilty and sentenced to hang the day following. As he stood awaiting the final moment to come when they .y-ould pull the trap he was asked if he had anything to say. He shook his head negatively. Captain Kent still believing him innocent came up on the platform and bade him farewell with tears in his eyes. A few secon·ds later George Lawrence died like a man and his name was put down fieading the list of heroic Mounted Police fo,r that day he had defended the Honor of �he Service.

N History as taught by Miss Newsom, you get at least six or seven other courses along with it, which makes your total of subjects in Clarkdale Hi about 10 or 11. My advice as a noble Junior is, take History by all means. But in order to back up my advice in detail, I will give some information about each of these courses and· I am sure that further presentation will be unnecessary. The least important of all the courses is History itself as written in the text book. The book is comparatively simple, being such that with continuous work it would be finished in one semester. But with the other coljrses a whole year is all that is necessary.

Then comes the English course included in History. This consists of themes, short stories, essays and memory work. Woe be to him who hands in not his memory work for if he fail to do so his penalty shall be to write the selection to be memorized twenty times.

Current Events is probably the most famous of the History courses-.

Hordes of students may be seen each day in the library, poring over "Collier's," "Saturday E'vening Post," and "The American;" and upon be­ ing asked by the study hall teacher (principally Miss Ebert) if they have time to do any recreational reading, the poor things look up at her with despair and martyrdom written on their care-lined faces and in a feeble voice murmur, "I am getting my Current Events."

About Christmas, Miss Newsom was stricken with a most dire disease, need I mention what? It has been epidemic in all parts ,of the United States. This terrible disease has been called Cross Word Puzzleitis by physicians in our prominent insane asylums. Need I say that the treat­ ment of this plague is a part of the History Course now? However, Miss Newsom is getting somewhat better and each of the entire student body at one time or another has been heard to wish for Miss Newsom's early recovery. A ten-ible rumor has been spread around lately that Mr. Good­ sell was seen helping Peg, who has Chronic Cross Word Puzzleitis, with a cross word puzzle in the library. It is hoped that this is merely a rumor.

Public speaking is also included in History; for further information on this ask any History student. It is hoped though, that any of you who ask, are used to hearipg Dad's language when he bumps his shins over a chair at night.

One course is included in every lesson in History, no matter what it may be; this course is Physical Culture. Students are forbidden under dire penalties to sit on their stomachs in class. For further information ask Berenice.

RAWLING forward on his stomach, Pedro Sanchez slowly made his way across the desert sand, toward a lonely tent of a German prospector. For days Pedro pursued what the old man possessed but guarded closely. Pedro desired it greatly but wished to obtain it without committing murder if possible.

Many times he could have had it but at the crucial moment his weak cot�rage failed him. He pulled from his pocket a flask of whiskey, and hurriedly swallowed the contents. The liquor slowly revived his cour­ age, and he made his way toward the tent.

This box Pedro knew contained something valuable because the old man always kept a close watch on it. At night he would place the box in a sack and hang it to the ridge pole of the tent, and then sleep with a gun under his head.

As he drew near the tent Pedro moved more slowly and on entering he drew from his belt a dagger and grasped it in his right hand. With a lurch he reached the old prospector and struck him. He jerked, slowly stiffened and moved no more.

Pedro took possession of the box and hurriedly made his way to his pony concealed in the bushes not very far away. Not opening the box he hung it over his saddle horn, and proceeded toward Agua· Caliente perhaps 50 miles distant. He could reach it by morning, get water, and by night­ fall the next day be safe in the small settlement, Agua Fria, across the border.

Although he knew the old man was dead, he kept a worried look­ out as if expecting to be pursued. Even his pony knew something was wrong with his master, for at a slight noise the pony would shy away and quiver.

As the sun was slowly rising over the horizon Pedro rounded a point and came in view of Agua Caliente, but on the plain before him were two men, mounted as if on guard, looking for someone, perhaps for him.

Regardless of his raging thirst, he returned a short distaance to a thicket and picketed his pony, then seated himself in the shade of the in­ viting trees.

At about noon he went again to the water hole, but the men still remained and evidently intended to because their tents were up. With thirst increasing he returned to his pony and. waited until sundown. Wild for the want of water he again went to investigate and to his joy found the riders gone. He rushed to the water hole and quenched his raging thirst.

As his mind cleared he thought of his box and returned to examine it.

On the lid he found a red label but the lid was· unlocked. Under the lid was a wire netting through which was a hole, perhaps large enough for the hand to enter.

Regardless of the sign Pedro. thrust his hand in!o the bo:i:c up to the elbow. Suddenly he let forth a pam-racked cry, and withdrew his hand.

The two men who were just leaving heard his cry and returned to investigate. When they reached the grove of cottonwoods, Pedro tried to escape them, but they soon overtook him and retm:ned to his pony and the red box.

"Yo no se! Yo no se!" cried the frightened Pedro. "Porgue viente agui? Yo no hacia nada."

When the men saw the box, they also saw the sign which read, "Reptiles: Handle With Care!"

Pedro would tell them nothing of what happened until one of them noticed his hand. Still clinging to it was a severed head of a Gila Monster.

In an hour or so Pedro in a delirious state of mind told all. The killing of the German prospector, the long ride and wait at Agua Caliente, and the opening of the box. In a short time he could talk no more, the men still riding hard trying to reach town. In due time Pedro passed away ever fearful of the unknown in the Great Beyond.

ID q r JI orutn The fact that the Forum has reached the place where it is taken for granted is the best proof of its importance.

At the present time, the Forum has charge of all school activities and is the controlling unit in the various school organiations, for all classes and clubs must be chartered by the Forum.

A new constitution was written and adopted by the members, many necessary changes being made. The most important innovations of all, however, were the creation of an Executive Committee, composed of rep. resentatives from each class and club of a Student Inter-class Activi­ ties Committee. The former receives all applications for charters and passes on them. Upon acceptance by the committee the charter is given to the Forum to be voted uipon. The latter committee has charge of all contests, decisions concerning the Forum, and the awarding of points earned in the several contests which are held between the two school groups; the Senior-Sophomore and Junior-Freshman. Ten events were ar­ ranged: basketball, tennis, football, track, debate, declamation, oratory and scholarship. The local post of the Am�rican Legion will award a cc(pper cup to the winning group. Competition has been keen, and so evenly are the groups matched that the scholarship will determine the winning group.

Another big step taken in the new constitution was the organization of a Student Welfare Committee, on whose shoulders was to be laid the task of retaining a high moral standard in Clarkdale High School. The committee has been lax this year in the performance of its duties, but it is hoped that succeeding -committees may really accomplish their aims.

The school with its able pilot, the Forum, has outgrown mere law­ making, and has begu. n a new era of expansion of its powers and general well-being. It is hoped that the changes made this year may only help the Forum to do more for the school than it has been able to do, heretofore.

IDqr "Ql" Qlluh The "C" Club consists of Alumni and Clarkdale High men who have won letters in any athletics in C. H. S. It's object is to create interest in athletics and also to teach s!(>ortsmanship and school spirit. This year quite a number of students won their letters and consequently were taken into the "C" Club.

Every member of the "C" Club has something to be proud of and as a general rule they are well aware of the fact and act as members_ of the "C" Club should act. It is the goal of every member ·o f Clarkdale High School to win a letter and join the "C" Club, that is why those who belong are respected.

It is hoped that in the years to come this Club will continue their good work in training good, loyal, and clean athletes.

GH7r ilramattr (!Hub This year the Dramatic Club has taken a step forward, under the able direction of Miss Olive Stansbury and through the cooperation of its officers: Martha Mary Davey, president; Irene Wade, vice-fpresident and representative; and Florence Kranso, secretary-treasurer. Meetings were held twice a month.

The Club prepared a one-act play "The Van Dorn's Merry Christ­ mas," and entertained the student body by giving it at the Christmas party.

During the last semester the work of the Club was concentrated on the production of the operetta "Once in a Blue Moon," the cast being selected from both the Glee Clubs and Dramatic Club. The joint work of the clubs brought forth a pleasing performance.

At the present time, the annual Senior plays "Jones vs. Jones," and "A Girl to Order," under the direction of Miss Finch, the Senior Sponsor, and Miss Stansbury are being prepared for Class Night.

Since the Commercial Department is equipped with all the modern devices with which to teach the students the various phases of business routine and management, and since about three-fourths of the students of the High School have enrolled in this department, the Commercial Gregg Club was organized for the purpose of having a unified body that would function as the staff of a '})aper, and keep up the morale of the en­ tire department.

The paper, with Annabelle Jones as editor, was named the "Loud­ !:!peaker" and has been a decided success. Although only two issues were published the staff did not stop working, but merged with Annual Staff and helped them.

Membership in the club was limited to those who wrote forty words on the typewriter or had won the 0. G. A. Certificate in shorthand. Dur­ ing the year the club sponsored a contest in typewriting. Marie Wom­ bacher won in the advanced class, writing s�venty-four net words per min­ ute, while Betty Chism won in the beginning class, writing fifty-nine words per minute. Marie and Annabelle Jones have their names on the Honor Roll, and every member of the advanced has won the highest award from the Remington Company for speed and accuracy.

Its president, Florence Kranso, has led a club which has been very beneficial and it is hoped that it will continue its successes.

Qll1e �irls �lee (!Hub The Girls' Glee Club has passed another successful year, under the direction of Miss Hickman, and because of her interest it has expanded and improved. The most important work of the year was the presentation of the operetta "Once in a Blue Moon" on February 13th. It was given to a packed house and the Glee Clubs and the Dramatic Club, which cooperated in giving it, felt that it had been truly enjoyed.

Work on music for Commencement and the Baccalaureate service has been begun and equally good results are expected.

iloys' �br Qlluh Our Boys' Glee Club is an organization that Clarkdale High School is really proud of. Despite the fact that they have only been organized for two years they have done splendid work in stimulating interest in music among the boys of Clarkdale High School.

They played a wonderful part in helping to make the Operetta, "Once in a Blue Moon," a success. For this they deserve much credit, for it is the first time the boys have made their appearance in public.

Perhaps in the future, some Carusos may be developed from the material they have in their Glee Club.

The Orchestra is another organization that promotes interest in music. Although it is not very large it has played its part in school ac­ tivities and will probably grow in the years to come.

Miss Hickman has done splendid work in training these people and deserved a great deal of credit for the good work she has done as director of this orchestra.

filrhating From a group of six persons, the largest group ever taking interest in debating from Clarkdale High School, a squad of four debators was chosen. These were John Winters, Myron Pexton, Betty Chism and Margaret Andrews.

The squad had several debates in private between the different members to improve their knowledge of the question and their ability for s,peaking. Mr. McClellan had charge of the debating and worked as hard as any coach.

On February 18, because of the illness of one member and the choice of basketball of another, Myron and John \Vere automatically chosen as the team to represent Clarkdale and gave speeches in Forum.

These two boys worked hard and when at last they appeared on the stage to debate against Prescott at Prescott, they gave good speeches. The subject debated was: "Resolved that the United States should join the League of Nations." Though the boys lost with a decision of two to one against them, they put forth an effort which is greatly appreciated.

We were not successful in debating this year, but we hope that the interest will increase and that we will be more successful in the years

to come.

Athletics have played a prominent part in Clarkdale High School and have been encouraged by the faculty as the school has matured and grown larger. Each year new members of the student body participate in athletics, developing a greater affection for their school and becoming better acquainted with their fellow students. The best and truest sort of friendships may be established between athletes, for, to paraphrase, "there is honesty among athletes." He, who has been a member of a team has learned the lessons of self-denial, loyalty, and honesty. Foot­ ball does not only develop courage and a fighting spirit, it develops other qualities that make better men.

Many persons have the mistaken idea that a student who goes out for sports of one type or another, thereby spends three-fourths of his time on the field or running around the country, and the remaining fourth in school; that his lessons are prepared in a "hit or miss" fashion and that the instructors pass him without regard for his work, in order that he may take part in these athletics. Perhaps this does occur, but in C. H. S. it is the exception which proves the rule.

To take part in any of the activities, not only athletics, a student must be carrying three subjects, he must have a passing grade in these three, and he must have made one and a half credits the preceding semester. In fact, the boy or girl who is a member of any team, has a most strenuous schedule, for a good part of one's time must be S1pent in practice. Proof of the training that is received in C. H. S. is shown by the fact that two former students, who were athletes and have gone to college, are honor students, as well ·as being superior in athletics. Our high school has profited in other ways also, for its teams, at one time or another, have held the Northern Arizona Championship in every form of athletics in which they participated.

The students themselves have appreciated -the value of this train­ ing and the significance of the letter "C." This year the student body or­ ganization has made the letter more difficult to obtain, thus increasing its worth. To them the athlete stands for the highest specimen of man or womanhood. On the other hand they realize that athletics is an activity in which everyone may take his part, for while one is not on the squad, he may play the game and ex:perience the same emotion as the hero on the field.

Thus by means of athletics, a standard for manhood has been set, which will have a greater scope and will be far-reaching as the years go by.

WILLIAM HASKINS, (Quarterback), "Willie."

One of the best quarterbacks C. H. S. has ever had, who proved to be a man worth mentioning for All-State man.

WALTER SHANNAHAN, (Halfback), "Doc." A man who always took pity on "knocked out" men, but who fought with all his might while in the game.

MIKE KENEZOVITCH, (Halfback), "Daddy."

Without a doubt DADDY was the fastest man in the backfield. His side-stepping gai!)ed for him yard after yard.

ADOLPH ORRANTIA, (Fullback), "Jack."

Jack, our fullback, was one of the constant ground gainers, and has the honor of playing all games for four years.

LEWIS MILLER, (Center), "Garbage."

Garbage was a good addition to our brick wall. Passing and tackling are his "pet hobbies." He has one more year.

JOHN RICHARDS, (Guard), "Johnny."

Although this is his first and last year, Johnny always fought hard.

He played every position on the line but center.

JOHN PETERSON, (Guard), "Peterson."

Peterson always fought hard for his team. If yardage was needed Peterson was the man to gain it.

LYNN PACE, (Tackle), "Pace."

Pace's ability along lines of tackling have placed him in such esteem that he will lead his team toward championship.

LORAN PACE, (Tackle).

Loran, another of the Paces, a sure tackle. He never 'missed a man, as was proved in the Flagstaff game.

LLOYD WILHITE, (Rightend), "Lloydie."

This is Lloyd's first year. His ability to tackle gave him the posi­ tion of end. He will be a valuable man next year.

STEVE KRUMPOTICH, (Leftend), "Chaco."

Steve also a first year man, but this didn't detract from his fine fighting spirit; you would be sure of him.

LEWIS BERTI, (Guard), "Berti."

Another of our first year men, was the best guard we had. Recov­ ering fumbles was a natural instinct with him.

JAMES FLYNN, (Halfback), "Jimmie."

Jimmie was given a tryout on the squad. He demonstrated his ability to carry the ball in the Jerome game.

CHESTER JONES, (Halfback), "Chet."

Playing his first year Chet would always be on the job. "Ready for anything" was his motto.

MYRON PEXTON, (Halfback), "Pecky."

Pecky could handle the ball very well, and also drop kick. He played his best game in Kingman.

JAMES HASKINS, (End), "Spuds."

Spuds, another of our fighting Irishmen, was light but able to down any opponent within his reach.

MIKE HOGAN. Always had a chance to fight for the Maroon and White. Believe me he fought. His chance will probably continue.

Games

The first game of the season was with the Alumni, which proved to the high school that they had a team who could win a victory first thing, as the score ended 6 to O for C. H. S.

The boys continued their wonderful playing by bringing home the score of 59 to O from Williams and also a score of 27 to 7 from Prescott.

Clarkdale ran a score on Kingman to, but it was much higher than the others, resulting in 106 to 0.

The two Jerome games were the only games we lost during the en­ tire season the first one being 9 to 6 and the second 27 to 7. The Flag­ staff game' was the hardest game of the season, ending with a score of 14 to 0, in favor of C. H. S. George was a good for­ ward. He is light, fast and surely can shoot baskets. He is expected to make even a ,better man next year

Clarence Wombacher Cherry, our new goal shooter, is from Cherry Creek. Luck is always with him, for he shoots with his eyes closed­ One more year for him

William Black (Capt.)

Fred is another star forward like Billie. He can shoot goals from any place on the court and this is only his first year

Billie is one of the best and fastest men on the team. He is a fighter for C. H. S. This is his last year and he will .be greatly missed next year

Martha Mary's ability is shown by the fact that she has been a member of the team for four years. She has endeared herself to the girls as a sort of super-captain.

A forward with a keen eye for basket shooting and a member of the dependable Howard family.

FLORENCE KRANSO, Running Center.

One of the liveliest members of the team. She has no match for speed.

MARIAN BERGMAN, Jumping Center.

Tall enough to out-jum1J any center, she can be depended upon fo get every tip-off.

BETTY CHISM, Guard.

A splendid guard, both strong and quick in action.

LOUISE HOWARD, Guard.

It takes a good forward to out play Louise. She's always on the job.

BERENICE EVANS, Substitute.

A girl whose playing should win her a place on the first team next year . . HELEN BURRUS, Substitute.

Always ready to fill any place on the ·team. She has three years yet to become a star, as no doubt she will.

No account would be complete without giving due credit to· our coach, Miss Jesse Heathman, who has given her untiring efforts in mak­ ing the team a success.

Although the school did not produce a championship team it was not due to the lack of co(t)eration on the part of the girls. Practically every night of practice two full teams were present, even though many of the girls had no hope of becoming members of the regular team. It is a spirit like this that makes the team and is a credit to C. H. S.

UJ.rark The in�erclass meet brought out loads of material for the track squad. Practically all of the old men were back and this formed the �rncleus of the team. Coach Goodsell picked the squad and they immed­ iately settled down to steady training. Those picked were: Walter Shana­ han (Captain), Billie Black, Lynn Pace, Orval Schanuel Clarence Wom­ 'ba�her, Fred Twitt_y, Louis Berti, James Flynn, Myro'n Pexton, John Wmters, Aurum Riley, John Peterson, Morris Golden, Marcus Reed, and Earl Corley.

The first track meet was .held at Jerome, we w-on with a score of 73 2-3 to 33 1-3. Clarkdale High School took first place in: Black Black Riley Black Twitty Black Black Black Peterson Clarkdale

·we also won from Prescott by a score of 99 to 9. Our boys took first place in all but one event which was a very good record.

The squad will also attend the Northern Arizona Tournament.

One of our own Freshman, Chester Jones, was high point man in the Junior Track Meet held in Prescott, May 8, and received a gold medal as a personal avvard and a bronze loving cup for the school.

ID'r1111i.s Tennis, during the past year, has received much attention in the Clarkdale High School. It is now a part of every Track Meet.

The fil;st Tennis Meet, for both boys and girls, was held in Jerome on April 18. Those who represented Clarkdale High School were: Myron Pexton (Boys' singles), Martha Mary Davey (Girls' singles), Fred Twitty and Lawrence Jones (Boys' doubles) and Irene Wade and Jewel Chism (Girls' doubles).

Although the only thing that Clarkdale took was the boys' singles the other scores were close and the games were interesting which keeps up the spirit in tennis and there is much hope of winning more in tennis next year. The girls' doubles team to play Prescott will be picked from a squad of four consisting of: Irene Wade, Jewel Chism, Marion Bergman, and Annabelle Jones.

With three men on bases and 45 yards to go, he dribbled to the twenty­ yard line and shot a basket from the center of the field, winning the meet.

Lynn : "Were you ever penalized for holding?"

John W.: "No, but I've been slapped."

Chester: "How do you teach a girl to swim?"

Marcus: "Easy, just put your left arm under her waist, take her left hand-" Chet: "Get out, she's my sister."

Marcus: "Oh, push her ·off the dock."

Barber: "No, I've only been working here a year."

There was a light in her blue, blue eyes as he waited breathlessly for her answer-a light that was meant for him alone. He puffed nerv­ ·ously at his cigar-but it had gone out. There fell a silence-a silence· pregnant with the communion of two vibrant souls. He fumbled for a match and then-then-He lit his cigar by the light in her eyes.

Mr. Goodsell: "Irene, your mouth is open."

Irene: "Yes, sir, I opened it, sir."

Mrs. Byrkit: "In the sentence, 'I saw the young girl climb the fence,' how many 'i's' would you use?"

John Peterson: "Both of them."

Mr. McClellan (Study Hall) : "I'll call names if you people don't sit ·down and be quiet."

Bill Haskins: "Go out there and count how many guys there are in suits."

Morris: "I started to count one, but I couldn't find him."

Mike Hogan: "Could I have a date for the game tomorrow?"

Evelyn: "Yes, Mike, but we'll have to do it on the sly, I have a steady."

Mike: "Oh, study in the morning."

Laugh and the class laughs with you, But you stay after school alone.
