HE Senior Class of 192) ha· edit.eel this volume with a two-fold purpose in view. First,, to intrnducc to outsiders the Clark­ dale High School and its standard of work, of which we are justly proud. Second, to carry away with us a token of the good fellowship and the pleasant. times shared by all the class during the four years that we have met together in the halls of dear old C. H. S. This is the first successful attempt that has been made to publish a book edited and assembled by t,he students. We know its faults arc manifold, but we hope that the reader will welcome our effort, and thaL those who follow in coming years will care to make of it an annual pub­ lication and will so impr.ove its quality as to make of it a just and fit­ ting product of this school.

ERY lit.tie space is ever allowed for the history of Freshmen, although some mio-hty things do come from that class. \.Ve, the clas. of .1920, begnn our career as high school students wisely. We kept our eyes open and observed our upper classmen, .of whom we had a constant fear. Even their condescending smiles , ent us seeking the protection of our classmates. Om ac­ tivities in our Freshman _year. were few; however, we ,,·ere well repre entcd in the track meet that year, a.n d we also decoraied the auditorium for the graduation, which wc were informed was an honor bestowed upon us.

Our Sophomore year was really one to be rem em bercd by all of u:<. The school 'pep' and spirit was at its height, perhaps because of the enthu. iasm of the Sophomores and the care-free life that we led. All the awe of our uppcr-cla.·. men and fear of making a blunder was lost by this time. We organized as a class and gave a, very uccessful Valentine party. We participated in all the ocial affairs of the school and also in the athletics, some of the best basket-ball players beinp: from our class. We surely had the life and spirit of the school thnt year and kept pace with the other classes. Although there were some very bad 'ca. e in our cla.·s, there was noth , ing else to mar the memory of i't. 1\7e were again informed that as we had nothing of importance to do ll'e 1rnuld be pcrmitt-rd t-o clrcorn t c t hr audi­ torium for the graduation.

This year was noted though for the many mysterious disappearances of om highly valued pennant. The class of '19 and the Alumni found out thou h that the class of '20 was a, litt.le too wise for them. We closed this year with a sumptuou · banquet for the Seniors of '19, and this year we were told that it was our duty to decorate for the graduation class, this being our last opportunity.

Altho, when our long looked-for Senior year came, only seven of us remained to enjoy it, however we had the class spirit of a number far larger than that. Now, when we look back over our four years together at Clarkdale High we cannot help but feel that each year is a treasure of our own that no one can ever take from us.

We have enjoyed each year and a.re glad that nearly all of our class have "braved the waves" t.ogether, which seems to make a stronger tie to our graduation. Al tho we regret leaving our Alma iVIater we are proud to think we were prepared at Clark­ dale High to overcome the greater struggles which we will meet later in life.

When we have at last gone our way and pursued our desires in higher places of learning we will look back with a feeling of pleasme at our high school life with its friends among the students and faculty.

A CLASS REUNION IN 1930.

T

HE Banquet Hall of Lhc new C. H. , '. had ju. t been complclccl and to e;ele­ brate thaL evenl too, the Class of l920 was to dc:lic:alc it by a class re­ union. We hearlily greeted each other and Lhcre \\'a- such a hubbub of "Well, what have you clone in the ten years", Lhat we could hardly wait until after the banquet to hear each one's experience . Leo \\'as chosen toastmaster and after a toast to our Alma Mater, Joel Willard, amid clapping and cheering, slowly rose to his feet and welcomed his classmates. He looke�I a grc'.Lt deal older and had a st.rained cxprc ion; hi hair hung long over his houlder.- and in a weak voice he said: "After my graduation I determined to carry out my life :1mbilion, so I set out for the Thos. Jacobs, Jr. Art School, but much to my sorro\\' I found that as I sought to have my paintings win fame, a firm known as "The Greater Larson Artists' had by electrical mean and devices turned out hundred of pictures daily.

They far excelled any that human hand could paint, by their \\'Ondcrful rcproduc­ t.ions of nature. I then went to this firm and who should I find the originator but Leo Larson. I explained to him how his invention had rninc:l my cherished career.

He advised me t·o use my artisLic abilities in his 011·11 r.cld of business, 'The Noble Arl of :Motion Pictures'. The latest picture I directed was 'Education:11 Advant­ ages at Home,' starrin" Leonel Larson. Thi picLurc put natmc at her height by the wonderful electrical productions of the Verde Valley. 'o, m_v cb f;mates I have left my work only to come here for this reunion of our cla ·.

His recital won applause as well as smprisccl gasp becau c of the success he had gained in his work.

Jennie Willard rose next. She had aged con iclerably and now looked to be a very trim suffragette.

"When I left C. H. S.," she declared, "I went to college and earned an A. Q. degree. I was then prepared to be a college professor, but for some unknown reason I scampered off and got married. Then the government passed the 33rd Amendment, wltich tumecl all the families into community home , and then it became more than I could stand, so I left my family in the Ruth Allsman Institute for Children and have been leading the Women's Rights Party ever since. My travels around the country have brought me in contact with some of the worst vices of the human race, and after my return home I will sec to the enact.ion of prohibition of tea, coffee, and chewing gum. Wh�, classmates, I never before realized what a vile world this is. So next election, all follow my pln,tform and we can make the world a better place to live in. 11 Jennie's stirring appeal was foUowecl by shouts as "\Vomen's Rights. Rah! Rah! and applause that shook the t.a.ble so that clinking glasses added to the sounds of merriment.

Then, out of ympa.thy's sake, I sent a bottle of the hair restorer to Joel Willard, who had lo t his hair by worrying over t:he loss of his career. You can see t•1c results for yourself."

considered no good, I left for the Barker St.udio at Hollywood. Here 1 took Eu­ crene O'Brien's place as the Matinee Idol. ll ,ms while here that I perfected my invention for reproducing paintings and at .last when my invention proved suc­ cessful, I formed the Company of 'The Greater Larson Artists'. But. as my t.alent. seemed to be in t ,he field of silent drama, I continued my carerr, with Joel \\Ti I lard as my manager and clirrctor."

"I had graduated from tanford and taught English in Lhe Verde High School, when Thelma brought; to light ·her discovery of the 'Educat.ional Pills' and my worthy profession was placed in the dark, because what was the use of my wasting my labors when a pupil could receive an educ·ation by taking pill.. HE Alumni extend their hearty greetings to the members of the faculty and the acting members of the C. I:I. S. Each one of us has been made bigger and better by the time we spent under the Orange and Green and we all t,ry to live up to the motto of the first class which was graduated, to find "Good in Everyt,hing".

THE CLASS OF 1917 which went forth so joyously, is scattered. EJjzabeth Sullivan was married to Darrell W. Rush, April 25, 1920, but we can ncYcr lo e Elizabeth, who was too much in the heart of the school. Fra.nk O'Brien is also rumored t¡o be married, and living in Phoenix. Frank Rice, who served in the Nav_v duri11g a period of the war, is now attending the University of Arizona. His voice is as strong in an argument as ever. Will Kearns sent us a most intere. ting letter of hjs life under the colors. He is now with the Mountain State Telephone Company. Boulder, Colorado. Maybe now Bill will be able to "speak to Maida."

Blanche Jolly. who attended the University of Colorado for a year, i now in the Clarkdale Post Office. She expects to return t,o college next year.

THE CLASS OF 1918 sent forth five graduates resolved to conquer Lhe world.

Myrtle Pexton is attending the Northern Arizona Norma.I School. Eileen Bennett is now in the Post Office in Clarkdale, but she leaves for "pastures new" next year.

Maywood Spellman is at the University of Arizona, hut we have heard vagur rumors that she will be the next to promise to "Love, Honor and Obey." in the very near future. Paul Allsman is going in for track at the U. of A. this year, and we hope that he lives up to the promise that be showed while he was yet in High.

We can't find it in our hea r. ts to blame Myrtle for looking to Tucson as her Mecca.

Donald Finlayson has left the fold entirely for Nevada U. As much of a dreamer as ever, is Donald, and we miss him and look forward to his return.

THE CLASS OF 1919 graduated only three students, Ruth Norris, who won the County Scholarship, is now in the University of Arizona., and we wish we could give you the interesting letter she wrote us about her first year in college. Paul Woerz is working in the Smelter here, the only boy to remain with us after leav­ ing school. Raymond Maestas went to the University for one semester, but was compelled to leave on account of his health. He is going back again he tells us, and will be all the more able to enjoy and appreciat,e his work.

THE AIM of every graduating class of Clarkdale High has been to put out a school annual, but for some drawback or other this aim has never before been realized. We, the class of 1920, are proud to t,hink we have at last overcome all the ob­ stacles that have stood in our path, and glad also t.hat the citizens of Clarkdale have awakened and given us their generous support.

This little book lacks in many fine qualities, we well know, but exper­ ience is really the only imprnver of all our work, so, dear reader, we trust that you will overlook what bas been omiLted, and in its place see our attempt and efforts. Our only drawback has been that of a lack of finances which has limit.eel our space, but this made us more considerate of what we did put in and so the best work of all the classes has been chosen. However, there were many fine contributions of equal value from the different students. but we chose t.hese with the thought of bringing out the ideals of each class. We have tried to show the good feeling and friendliness at C. H. S. and to reproduce ·the victorious spirit with which we hiwe won all our contests. Many little incidents · recorded in this book might otherwise have been forgotten in the course of time, but with the snap-shots and sketches we are assured of a lasting memory of rna.ny little acts and stunts at school.

Altho this book is small, it is the

first a.nd we leave behind us the hope that each year. will bring with it improvements in the annuals that follow, and by the efforts of the other high school students we hope our ideals will have been realized, that is, that the future volumes will be records of loyalty to the Alma Mater and of the undying school spirit of the C.H. S. TllELMA PEXTON.

THE GE IERATIONS', ACIUFICE OF REVERENCE.

T11ERE is no excusable reason why we of this rapidly risino- civilization should be losing the reverence justly due to a visible beauty, purity and sacredness. Because we arc advanc­ ing along a scientific trend is no cause that we should be called on to sur­ render our finer instincts.

Are we, as a race of intelligent people, incapable of making a vigor­ ous advance in craf(,S and sciences without a reverion and decline of our moral standard'? Or, doe Lhc development of such wonderful ma­ chinery and the new discoveries which are so greatly increasing our knowledge cause us to apply a scientific explana­ tion to all phenomena and mystery of creation'? Instead of growing in­ different to the blessings, which would, if we let them, enrich our existence, our progress should cause us to feel only greater reverence for the good, arid bear in awe the Master Being, who has created in us such a power for achievement.

It is a noticeable fact that the young­ er generations, though developing in a more noble environment than t.he dark ages of warfare and presecution produced, fail to grasp a thorough sense of appreciation and reverence toward the sanctity and chastity of things unmarred and invested with holiness. Have their elders grown careless or shirked the task of instill­ ing in them the characteristics of nobleness'? Or is it just a freakish whim they have picked up, of sneering at all that is good or magnificent?

Are we going to risk the deterior­ ation of our civilization by allowing a coarseness of morals to lead us away from those finer, enobling instincts?

-Home, the World's proudest em­ pire. was broken clown through its aha11clonment to pleasure and vice, and Germany, a modern world-power fell into a n . abyss of chaos because she lo L all reverence for the lives and rights of mankind. Shall we follow them? No!-We will not, follow in the footsteps and accept the same fate of these grcaL nat,ions whose downfall hisLory has placed before us as a warn­ ing example.

The future of out· nation rests upon the younger generations, now forming the ideals which will determine their life career. So let us take tJic opp::>r­ tunity to make it a great and worthy future by inspiring the children to higher ambifrrns, and st,::>p the de­ moralizing effect of irreverence. With­ out reverence they will lose sacredness, purity and n::>bleness, and those qual­ ities are necessary to make a nation tmly great.

BOOKS AS FRIENDS ANYONE can have friends if he desires them. It is all in the way one looks upon life as to the number of

friends he has, and yet it is better to hav.e a few true ones than a lot of insincere ones, the kind that forget you when you are down and out or have nothing more to give them.

The same applies to books. They may bcuefi t a person or ruin his ideals and morals. More care should be taken in choosing the type of books one reads than the people he mingles with daily, because one can sec through human nature and make allowances, but the characters of a book remain the same always.

If the story is good and there is a great deal to be learned from it, one cannot, help letting it's ideals creep into his own character, making it stronger.

The good points of characters in books often impress t,he reader, and after reading a good story one cannot help but be enthusiastic about it and wish that someone else would read it too. It even makes the reader want to be like the characters of the story. For instance, among our mod­ ern popular writers, L. M. Mont­ gomery paints her characters so vivid­ ly that they draw words of admira­ tion from any young girl reader and makes her also want to be "one of those that, know Joseph". George Eliot's hooks as well as those of Dickens, deal chiefly with the devel­ opment of character, and that is what makes their stories so long re­ membered. One can always place an acquaintance or oneself in the guise of characters, so true to life as those authors picture them.

People come and go, and change continually; sometimes they agree with us and again they do not. It is like suddenly meeting an old friend to find a book by one's favorite author in a place where you are a total stranger. It makes you feel

as though you would like to be friends and talk with the owner of it, even if you don't know him personally as yet.

A good author makes people think.

He puts ideas before him that may not be exactly new, but they are ex­ pressed in such a clear and understand­ ing way that they appeal to the read­ er in a new light. The author that writes about, the real things of life are t,he most read because they are the most human. They teach us how to find our own happiness in what is around us, by being more satisfied with our smroundings and by giving a helping hand where'er it is needed.

Pleasure and enjoyment are the pro­ ducts of service, and these authors show us more clearly how to serve.

Col'RTESY is that form of polite­ ness that distinguishes the difference between ill bred and a well bred person. A courteous act is always looked upon with a sense of pleasme, and in these days if a person is able to give pleasure to his fellow country­ man he is in a clear way of making a mark for himself.

It is in school that a student's sense of courtesy should, and really is, moulded into the being and be­ comes one of his most noble and dis­ tinguished characteristics. It is in school literally speaking, that we lay the foundation of our destinies; wheth­ er they be for good or bad depends olely upon our true self. If we ares

armed with a strnng en e of courtesy om battle arn half won, because, while we are expounding our philosophy or theorie., as it may be, if we arc able to retain that sense of respect and po­ liteness which is due to all, we im­ mediately gain the confidence and good will of others or brn.:i.dly peak­ ing, of om fellow countrymen.

The successful men of to-clay are the men who realize fully the value of a strong sense of courte y. They are the men who always meet you with a smile and cheery salut::Ltion.

The philosophy and teaching· of om greatest poets and philosophers, impress us with the fact that the man who can always meet his troubles with a smile and still retain his sense of courtesy for all with whom he comes in contact, is the truly succc. sful man.

A,.-. ATTEMPT should be made to clear the streets of the community as a whole from the night roaming burro.

There is no question as to the fact that the bmro is a menace to the town.

We know it is bad enough to be awakened by the whistle, in the morn­ ing, but being kept. awake all night until the whistle blows is beyond the limit.

Burros do prove a great enjoyment to the younger boys of the town, and on the other hand, are often of great usefulness. Nevertheless they should

have their proper place, which 1s not on the streets.

The method now used to get rid of them is altogether the wrong method to obtain proper results. When they become too annoying they are herded into a group and escorted out of town.

Refening to the statement, "Once a tramp, always a tramp," they naturally wander back again.

Owners should be compelled to keep their animals in a corral of their own and not allow them to mingle

with the others. If this should be of too much trouble a large corral could be built out of town to keep them in, and a caretaker hired to attend to their needs of feeding and watering. Whenever a burro was needed, he could be taken out, and later returned.

We most assuredly need some meth­ od of stopping their midnight sere­ nades, and this last method would be the cheapest, and easiest way out ¡or the difficulty.

ONTEZUMA WELL lies in the heart of a ranch just within the southern boundary of the gigantic Coconino National Forest Reserve on the west­ ern bank of Beaver Creek. Its walls of milky white lime tone some eighty feet in height., tower above the still placid waters of the well below. Thi is not the type of well that serves man with wa.tcr for refreshing drink and for household purpo. cs. The area i quite equal to the small citrn farms in one of the tracts of outh rn alifornia. The urfare of the water presents a green appearance cau eel from the heavy growth of green stringy moss. The few feet of bank separ­ ating the wa.Lcr from the perpendicular cliff wall of the north shore is well concea.lecl by the den ·e foliage of the Spa.nish semi-evergreen willota plant. In place on the western and eastern wall, signs of man's ancient habitations is presented with clearne s by the caves whose large mouths are partially closed by rncle rustic wall of clay and rock. The ceilings of one is plastered with a deep carpet of grime from the effect of smoke of a thousand fires. Down the southern cliff wall, winding il. way . lowly toward the edge of the water nca.r the out.let, a hole through the f clif , lie.· the trail, accessible on foot. This trail was worn smooth before a human being of our present uper-civilization beheld its grandeur.

A Fishing Hole at Sedona

HIS pool is one of many located on Oak Creek, a dashing ice-cold mountain stream which i · not very

deep or wide but very swift. It emerges from a deep 11:ll'l'OW va!Jey walled in by steep slope. covered ll'ith scrub pines at higher levels, and a heavy o-rowth of cedar and manwnita brush at lower ele­ vations.

On one side of t,his pool in this canyon is a river bottom hiclcl n beneath

the dense foliage of cottonwood , mountain ash, willow, box-elder, bla.ck 11'::tlnut and sycamore, whose grey bark blends with the rolor of the gray rounded boulders of the creek bottom.

On the oppo ite side an irrigation ditch runs ll'atering the

home ranch and one of our neighbors. This ditch of water winds iL ll'ay like a silver thread about the base of a hill, skirLinO' the neighbor's place and c\i,-appcnrs behind the trees in a bend of the creek.

Through an open space an orchard of peaches and apples, and in it. mid. t the rich, gleaming luscious reel of strawbenies can be seen.

Between the ditch and I.lie pool rises a rock shelf allowing plenty of room to stand upon while casting your line into the cool depths where the wily trout lurk.

In the cool gray dawn or the dusk of evening, of early June, the trout will ri. e Lo a cricket at.tachecl to a small sharp hook and a fishing pole of second growth syca­ more as readily as to the expensive handmade bamboo rod and trout Ay of the fisherman who flashes a huge roll of greenbacks.

This litt.le mountain settlement has now bid good-bye to those who love Lhe solitude of an isolated wilderness.

It was only a matter of ten year.- ago, when thi

place was devoid of summer tourists, when the electric horn of the automobile did not disturb the silence of the wilderness, as the deep penetrating tones echoed and re-echoed among the sLill forms of the trees; to warn away a range cow reclining in the sandy road beneath their cool shade. But the coming of the auto has chang­ ed the routine of this place as in t.he warmer months it enables those in the far away cities to heed the call of the wild. On June the first, opening day of the trout season, those_ who shake off the shackles of civilization, search out these pools and at night many campfires among the trees glow brightly in the darkness.

Prune Juice

O

NE summer evening a young fellow rode into the Lazy Y Ranch on a dust covered, sweaLing and puffing horse. The man himself was covered with dirt and looked very tired. His new saddle, new chaps and the awkward way in which he managed his horse, all pointed out that he was a" green­ horn He "struck the boss for a job and got it as a sort of odd-job man, sta1ting with wages of forLy dollars. "'vVell sonny, you-all look 'perty' tired. How about some grub?" asked the bos , after these arrangements were made.

The "greenhorn's" face brightened at the name of food. The "grub" seemed lo bring back all his. pirit, and when he joined the group of men on the porch of the bunk hou e, a long lanky man said, drawlingly, "\Veil, how'cl you-all like the nose bag?".

"Il rcfre. heel me greatly. You know, a man gets pretty tired after riding a hunclrecl're so miles in a clay. You know, one time when I was riding clown in South America * * * I-le told of his experiences in Wyoming, Australia, Ar­ gentina, etc., unLil the oLher men went in and flopped clown on their bunks.

Later, Lhe bo s called Archie, the "greenhorn" into his house and said, "They tell me, Arch, that you-all 're a powerful good rider. Well, here's a proposiLion: I'll give you a hundred dollars if you can bust my bronc, Prune Juice There hain't been no feller around here yet what can do it. Are ya game'?"

Archie answered, hesitatingly. I-le couldn't back out now.

"Ye-e-e "Will you-all try 'er tomorrow?"

Archie noclclecl.

The next morning he got up and pretended to be very sore and was not able to ride that clay. He chopped wood almost all clay, and that evening had a rag clipped in reel paint, tied around his hand.

"I'm afraid I won'L be able to ride your horse, Prune Juice, to-morrow either," he informed Lhc boss, waving his injured hand at him.

The following clay Archie rode out with the boys, who were going to do some branding. When he came home that night, he told the boss, "I say, out at the branding corral today, one of your men got careless and dropt a hot branding iron on my arm. I fear I won't be able to ride your pony for a few days."

This kept up for a little over a week, until finally Archie could not figure out :1,ny new excuse.

The afternoon set for the bronco busting was bright and hot, and all the cow hands except three, were standing outside the corral, peering in. The three were 11•

saddling the great black Prune Juice. When all was ready, Archie sprang into the saddle. The horse jumped to his feet and started rearing, standing on rea.r and fore legs, bncking or rolling, but always Archie was easily holding on, or jumping off if Prnne Juice took it into his head to roll. Once, as Prune Juice was in mid-air the cinch parted, but the man landed lightly on his feet and was quickly back on the horse, hcl-ling to his mane.

Then he began running the horse up and down the fields, until he was worn out, nnd as tame as a dog.

All the while the cow hands had been gaping on, shouting, or talking among t,hem elves.

"Well, fellows, I guess I win," panted Archie. "Shall I touch the boss [or Lhat roll'? Bet it'll take all his savings."

The others shouted approval, shook his hand a.nd patted him on the back.

"Wrong, here's yer money, an' I'm a thousan' times obliged," said the boss heartily, handing him a check.

"Now where's my horse?" asked the bronco buster.

"She's in the barn," he was told.

He soon had her saddled and rode out of the gate shouting good-by and w:w­ ing his hat. \¼'hen the boss went into his house, the cook handed him a note. He read the following to the men: "Dear Boss:-Thanks awfully fer th' grub, bunk and dough. I was travellin' thru th' country an' I heard of your offer. I thot I would have some fun, so come clown. Yours trn]y, Bronco Bill. " "Wall, that explains it," spoke up the lanky man, "Bronco Bill'. the be t bronco buster in the Southwest."

Julia

you11g boy came slowly clown the road, shoulders stooped, hands jammed deep clown in bis pockets, his hat pullec ( over one eye and one foot draggi�1g _ listlessly after the other. Under Ju111or's hat bnm could be seen two cbs­ contented eyes, a nose at a very sneering angle and very pouting lips. \Vho could help it, with the sissy name of "Junior" tagged onto them. Yes, some people might think it was fun to be called "Julia" and "Junie".

Just then, when his thoughts were darkest, came a faint call, "Julia!" "Oh! Julia!"

Junior turned on his heel and out came two hard knotted fists, up went the shoulder. and the listless walk became a fast stride.

"By Golly! I'll fix the guy who dared call me that. He must be over in Har­ ri. on's garden, peeping out. The sneak!"

Junior leapt over the garden wall, and there behold! stood Miss Ann Harrison, dressed in ruffles, shyly twirling her sun shade.

"Diel you call me Julia?" demanded Junior.

Ann, getting a liLtle ruffled from his tone of voice, tossed her head in the air and replied, "No I did not. Do you think you're the only pebble in this garden? Since when did you change your name to Julia? Shame on you! That's a girl's name."

Ann was not aware that this lately had become Junior's nickname among the boys, and that many bloody battles had been fought over it.

Junior, whose face was very red and whose hat was on at a very comical angle started making hasty apologies, but Alm broke in exclaiming, "Oh! here comes Julia now", and there stood Julia Martin, Ann's pretty little city friend, who had come to spend the summer.

"Miss Martin, I want you to meet my friend, Junior \Vhite, whom I hope is going to help me entertain you this summer."

Junior became more and more confused, but Julia very composedly walked up, and said very smilingly and sweet, "I know we're going to be good friends. Oh! I think you have the nicest name for a boy!"

Half an hou._r later, Junior was whistling on his way home. lVIaybe it wasn't such a bad world after all.

Revelations

was staying with cousin Mary Jane for a week while Mother went to the coast.

There was another visitor beside myself who insisted on being called by her entire name, "Aunt Matilda Jane Saunders". This very stately lady, on this particular Sunday afternoon, was seated on the veranda in the black silk gown and the high bonnet which we had grown to hate. She believed in being ready for church in plenty of time. It was a very warm sleepy clay and Mary Jane and I were taking off our shoes for a wade in the creek, when-

"Mary Jane, 11 said Aunt Matilda Jane, "get your bible and come here. Child­ ren should learn that Sunday is a clay of worship."

Aunt Jane had on her sternest manner and must be obeyed. Very reluctantly we picked up our shoes and with a very disappointed air we got our bibles and brought them to our haughty aunt. She raised her lorgnette and looked us over from l1ead to foot. We felt like two culprits, but could not imagine what sin we had committed. We did not expect anything very interesting to pass the time away but we did expect something more interesting than "Revelations." But Aunt Jane thought that Revelations was the most important part of the bible.

Under the scorching gaze of our aunt we were soon studying our bibles. But all things will come to an end. The chair was very comfortable; the creek singing and dancing in the sun was bewitchingly soothing, and Aunt Jane was nodding in less than fifteen minutes. ·we waited until we were sure he was asleep and then we quietly laid our books aside and, while I kept watch, Mary Jane slipped into the house. I suddenly remembered what Mary Jane had said.

"I know what I'm going to do the next time Aunt Jane tries to boss me."

Jan . e ha.cl more spirit than she showed, and was tenibly like her namesake, in some ways. I remembered then, she had slipped a mysterious package into her toy box.

Vi'hen she ca.me out she softly removed Aunt Matilda Jane's sacred bonnet, and took something from her pocket. I beard little Billy crying, so I ran to . ee what was the matter with him. When I came back I could hardly wait to see what she was "doing" but :Mary Jane would not tell me. With a sly smile she said, "Just wait and see", and again, :Mary Jane was studiously studying Revelations, with her head bowed and a very i1111ocent look on her face.

Aunt :Matilda Jane never ate lunch on Sunday evening. She thought it was very unhealthy after a late dinner, to eat again. But nevertheless Aunt JVIary always gave us children some lunch and didn't consult Aunt Jane about her opinion, so when we ";ent in we were very careful not to disturb her.

When Aunt Mary called her to go to church, she rushed right out to the car without saying a word. She sat like a stone image all the way to church. If she would only relax once in a while I might stand her, but she was always the same.

Mary Jane and I had insisted on attending church that night for the purpose of seeing the slides that the minister was going to show. I marched into our pew with my hand in Aunt Jane's, which· was not my suggestion. The minister asked all the ladies to remove their hats, so all could see the slides. I suddenly noticed that everyone was staring at Aw1t Jane and when I looked to see what they were staring at-Oh! Horrors! Her head was entirely covered with little pink bows.

Mary Jane and I could scarcely keep from laughing for she looked exactly like Topsy. I thought I ought to tell her, for everyone was staring at her, but it was such a good way to get even with her. ""What rude people," said Aunt Jane in a repressed whisper, "they act as if they had never seen anyone before."

Aunt Jane forgot that she was brought up not to whisper in church.

"What is the matter with these people, lVIary, and why is Jane acting so queer?"

"Jane, if you don't behave I shall take you out!"

"What are they laughing at, Niece iVIary? Take a good look at me and see if there is anytbing to laugh at." Aunt :Mary did as she was asked.

"Aunt Jane! What on earth is the matter with yom hair? Put your hat on quick and come with me."

Mary Jane and I were taken very ungraciously by the hand and jerked to the door. Aunt ]VIary removed the decorations but our embarrassed relation could not be persuaded to go back.

I shall omit what happened next, but Aunt Mary finally got the whole story.

For three clays Mary Jane stayed in her room reading Revelations and eating bread and milk. But Aunt Jane remained until Mary Jane's punishment was over and then. left, clad in her black silk with her nose at a ninety degree angle, and as Mary Jane watched her out of the window, she said with her most grown up air, "Pride goeth before a fall!"

School Days

ITH an angry buzz a June-bug shot up from Johnnie Kelly's desk. The teacher, a long nosed, reel faced man of about forty years, was short and stout, with broad shoulders, a firm jaw, and thin, determined lips.

He was bending over hi note-book, too interested to notice whether or not the students were studying.

Tied to the June-bug was a very small pen-and-ink drawing of the teacher.

The students, all but Johnnie, were giving their undivided attention to the bug.

"Evangeline" lay open on their desks. She could have given chase to Gabriel all over the world for all they cared. The June-bug sailed around the room, crawled over the globe, gave Lincoln the "once-over", then stopped at the pro­ fessor's desk. The teacher's "portrait" rested wearily against the inkstand.

Upon discovering his visitor, the teacher jumped to his feet. There was no doubt, the drawing was made to represent him. A_ gurgle from his throat was the only sound to be heard.

Then the professor tried to strike the bug and it darted away and landed on the map of North America; the class giggled. From Maine to Salt Lake it travelled, his passenger still with him. The teacher advanced, note-book in hand. The June-bug crossed the Grand Canyon of Arizona; "Whnck!" went the note-book, -and there was a new city in Arizona.

The instructor whirled around, but all noses wer<' immeclintely buried in their books. He looked over the class.

"Johnnie Kelly, Stand!" he commanded sharply. The boy could .no more conceal his guilt than the freckles on his pug nos<'. The entire class looked at the embarrassed boy, and giggled characteristically.

Johnnie was a tall, red-headed, freckled faced boy. He was so slender that he was actually "skinny" .. His hands dangled from his coat. sleeves, his clothes were ill-fitt,ing and patched in several conspicuous places, but his big Irish blue eyes fairly twinkled with good humor and love of mischief.

"Young man, in one week you have caused more trouble than all the rest of

A Dissertation Inspired

by Toast

A VE you ever tried to break through the reserve and win the confidence of an individual, who because of his self-esteem disdains the confidence and intimacy of friendship? You will find some such peculiar qualities are quite usua.1 among people who feel their superiority over one-another. It is generally the attitude of people who are devoted to themselves and have too little work to do to understand the worth , of the other man to the progress of humanity.

There are other people that you meet daily, who are pretending, effusive, and undependable, tho to your face they may act the part of affectionat.e friend hip.

But you are never really interested in them. It is the independent person, who ac­ cepts only a few into intimate friendship, that you try to win for a comrade. But if you wish to win the confidence of one of these reserved uncommunicative indi­ viduals, you must patiently study his personality; learn the po itive of his char­ acter, his interests and his ideals, and familiarize yourself with hi negative char­ acteristics. Then, you will be able to approach him on his own footing.

There is some difference in every character, but you must learn how to judge them all, or you will fail to discem this contrast. You may understand better what I mean. if I give you a simile in the form of a loaf of bread for comparison and study.

A loaf of bread is just a loaf of bread with its merits or shortcomings (some­ times short), no matter where it originate:! or whatever house it occupies. So that is insufficient. to draw from for our study. But who can perceive the qual­ ities of bread in the loaf? Do not all, first break the loaf? Then slice it. Slice it,-there, you have samples for the connoisseur. But you have clone more than that: you h:we, if I may say it, given individuality to the slice.

That bread will go on the table and each of us will have a slice; perhaps more if it is excellent., less if it is lacking of good qualities. We will think "that is good bread", or "that ought not be called bread", and for you that is the last of it.

You always are through when you have clone that.

But to me a plate of bread has as strong individual characteristics as a group of people. Take the middle slices and the heel for instance. Those middle slices are false pretending personalities; clothed i11 a whiteness which announces itself as purity. They alone of the loaf have those qualities which fit them to appear at society's table. But it is only the humor of society and a set of tender gums that causes me to accept them. It is only because of the advantage they give me that I acki1owledge intimacy with the middle slices. Personally I detest their deceitful enticements of white purity and their softness and lightness. I dislike their lack of individuality and their indifference. They are too amiable and assenting. Middle slices are too much like people who agree with you about every thing, as though they had no mind of their own.

You have never seen a heel showing these weaknesses. They are too proud

and too well acquainted with the vanity and pretense of society to appear at its table. They are like wise old clergymen who are too well acquainted with the world to join in its vices, and so proud and self-righteous that they would rather be slighted than have society accept them in its condescending way. Yes, the heels are certainly the most resolute slices of bread.

Vi'hen I meet a heel crnst at an informal dinner, at once I feel the presence of a strong personality and there is nothing about the meal that gives me more pleas­ ure than to play my knowledge and understanding to outwit it in its dignity and re. erve.

But you must beware of the heel. If you are not very familiar with its qual­ iLics, you are apt to suffer great humiliation, in the first few encounters at least, for it i very obstinate and conceited, and takes great pleasure in causing you em­ barrassmcnt,.

I like to be alone when I have a tussle with a heel slice of bread, because I feel lhat it is animated with such a spirit of perversity and stubbornness that I could not succeed a. well under the observation of spectators. And besides there will be no one lo comment if I lose a tooth in the bout or the heel retire from off my plate.

But you ask what all this talk about bread and character has to do with toast. vVhy, t ha,t is what started all this outburst. That piece of toast I had this morning was a heel-it set me to thinking of the characteristics of people.

Mi Moore, our faithful instructor, came to Clarkdale in 1916. A Girls' Glee Club was then organized with an attendance of only twelve members.

Clarkdale Hiµ;h grew it took in new members unt,il now there are twenty flutety voices, all told. larkchlc High hould be very proud of the "sticktoiLiveness" of these girls, for nothing has launted them, not even hicrh note , thrilly scales or givi.ng up two evenings a week for pract.icc. Along with the work of the orchestra many good times have been had, includ­ ing an occasional "feed" which seems to have e pecially appealed to the ma culine members. \Ve hope that next year the number in our orchestra may increase as we realize much more may be accomplished if we do.

Hallowe'en Masquerade The Hallowe'en dance given by the Student Body on Friday, October thirty­ first, was a very successful affair. The auditorium was decorated in orange and black, and the gay colored costumes of the dancers added to the Hallowe'en spirit.

Eleven o'clock found the members of the party sitting on the floor eating pumpkin pie , a la mode. Soon after, the dancers started homeward, all agreeing that the evening had been a very enjoyable one.

Faculty Reception

One of the most delightJul affair. of the year was a reception given on December fifth by our fa.culty to the friends and patrons of the school. After a short, but unique program. consisting of several musical numbers, and a varied entertainment by the primary children, light refreshments were served. The remainder of t, he evening was t.hen enjoyed in dancing and card playing.

Christmas Party December Nineteenth wiU long be remembered as one of the many good limes that have been given by the Student Body this year. The attractive decorations of holly, mistletoe, red bells, and a Christmas tree lent a fest.ive air to the scene.

Several of the students gave a bmlesque on a faculty meeting, which was exceeding­ ly humorous. Little gifts were given out to each of the students, each Fre:hmn,n receiving a stick of candy. The party was followed by dancing, and at the close of the evening refreshments were served.

Senior-Alumni Party On Tuesday evening following Christmas, Miss Barker entertained the Seniors and Alumni at her home with a dance and party. A good many of the Alumni had come home from college for the holiday vacation, and enjoyed meeting their fonner schoolmates and teacher. During the evening, some danced while others played games. Unusually delicious refreshments were served.

Sophomore Dance The Valentine party, given by our Sophomores, was not at all interfered with by the rainy weather conditions. The hall was gaily decorated in reel and white streamers and little hearts, which were suspended from the ceiling. Everyone was so busy having a good time that they did not notice such minor things as the scant supply of punch and the missing traps from the orchestra. Howard brought "his girl" to the dance, which accounts for the last mentioned calamity. The dance lasted until about eleven-thirty, and as Mr. Hull is very strict about time, we all had to go home in the rain.

Freshman Entertainment

The Freshmen entertained the other members of the High School and the fac­ ulty dming the evening of March nineteenth, the second day after St. Patrick's Day. The auditorium was elaborately decorated with strips of green and old rose crepe paper, and a green "welcome sign was hung in the entrance hall.

All of the lights were covered with green, making the place look very Irish and "Freshie like. Dancing was the entertainment of the evening, and the artistic favor dances were especially unique.

HEN Clarkdale wa barely six months old, a school wa opened with an attendance of about three times as many as were required for one di trict. A few months later, when school opened in t.he fall of 1913 for a second term, a larger attendance was found, including four high school student .

This was the beginning of Clarkdale High School.

With the next year came an att.encla.nce of about twelve high school pupils and additional teachers. As the attendance was so very , mall that year Lhere was scarcely any real loyal spirit among the students. But with the next year came the Love and Loyalty to good old C. H. S., which has never died. Thi. year was a memorable one. Altha we had only a three roomed frame building and a two roomed brick cottage for classrooms, we fared splendidly.

With the coming of the fourth year, the High School was moved to several office buildings on the Cla_rkdale townsit.e. The school spirit was growing and ev­ ery student was a proud defender of C. H. S. Our principal, lVIr. Gorman, wa a jolly and good-natured person who aided in pushing the school reputation higher up the long hill to success. By the opening of the second semester the new . chool building was ready t.o be occupied. There was much rushing and excitement while our little high school was moving into its new quarters. Then everything settled down for a successful year. And successful it was! The High School Spirit was at its highest pitch. The Verde Valley Teachers' Association, organized to better cooperate the schools of the valley, was entertained by the high school and their friends. Work clone by the various schools in the district was exhibited, Clarkdale receiving the Scholarship Cup, as the best City School. This eventful week reached its climax in a track meet held with Jerome, and resulting in a vic­ tory for Clarkdale High. At the close of this year the first eighth grade graduated into the High School division. There were three graduates: Thelma Pexton, Ruth Johnson and Lewis Allsman, all of whom graduate this year from Clarkdale

High.

On opening the school for the fifth term, a new principal was in charge. Under Mr. Latham's supervision the school's progress became more rapid. In the spring of the year a track meet was held between Prescott and Clarkdale, the Clarkdale boys coming out three points ahead. A banner of blue and gold was presented to

the High chool for winning the relay race. At the close of this term the first graduates I ft the High , chool.

Our . ::une superintendent supervised the next year but many new teachers were employed, the cla ·sos growing each year. The spirit of this year was all that could be desired, and everyone took an interest in the activities and welfare of the school.

The fall or 1918 marks the coming of our present superintendent, Mr. W. R. Hull. chool was barely opened when the dreaded plague, Spanish Influenza, seized the Lown and our chool was forced to close for about thirteen weeks. When it opened :-tp;ain we were so ru heel to make up our work that very little time was spent in !1 Lhlclics or social activities. R.egardless of the I'll h, however, about twelve game of b:1. eball were played, our boys losing only one. Also the faithful Juniors were "011 the job", and entertained the eniors royally at a banquet and dance, aL Lhe close of ! he term.

This year appear to lack a little of the old time spirit, but that is only because we are a "busy bunch"; the old easy-going spirit is gone, but the love and loyalty to our Hiµ,h .�ehool i a, Lrong as ever. The Seniors are publishing an annual, which Lhe�· le:we as a token of loyalty to the school. Their purpose is not only to give pleasure, but Lo how that our high school life ha a real motive behind it, and they h:we I ried l"o pre ent to the rca.ders the ide:i.ls for which C. H. S. stands.

HG 'larkdale High chool Forum wa originated for the welfare of the high school as a whole, including all students and Lhe faculty. Its great ob­ ject i to "accomplish a unified spirit among the student.s of Clarkdale High School, and to encourage and maintain the variou social, litera.ry, athletic and other activities which may contribute to the social and moral culture among its member.".

The organization was first originated with the opening of the last school term, in the fall of 1918. It had merely drawn up its constitution when school closed on account of the epidemic of the "flu". When school again opened with such· a great amount of work to make up, unluckily the Formn was one of the school ac­ tivities that had to suffer in order that our school work could go on. vVith the opening of school this term the Fonun stepped out with a new force and determination. It was here we really faced, not the problem of reconstrnc­ tion, but of constrnction. But our President of the first semester worked and fought and we entered to take hold from the bottom. With several books on Parlia-

menmry Law, Mr. Hull gave his time to teaching us the rules of order, with prac­ tical experience on the side. \Ve are now well on our feet and well over the first problems of construction, ever ready to tackle new ones.

No doubt the study of Parliamentary Law and the practical experience received by it in the Forum is one of the great assets received in the high school. It trains the mind to think other than from books, and proves rather amusing at times, but t.he greatest, asset or" all is its work of preparing a person to face a crowd or an audience and express hjs opinion. There is an everlasting amount of chances for need of this training after leaving hjgh school and the best trained gets the job.

Our Forum will undoubtedly find this true in the future school term , when it has conquered all obstacles of construction, and has other greater accomplish­ ments to which to look forward.

Camp Verde Hospitality

O not consider this to be a great and moral story, my readers. It i merely a tale of our last basketball trip to Camp Verde several weeks ago. · Six cars were to leave at the same hour-six o'clock, but five of we boys left about two hours earlier so the rest could assemble the remains, if neces­ sary. We arrived at Camp Verde about two hours later with nothing less than a torn out radiator, due to the fan tearing into it.

Our spirits had somewhat fallen with our arrival in Camp Verde, things seeming so dead and lifeless, but if we could have looked ahead to the adventures of the njght that were to follow, no doubt we would have livened up. It was not long tho, before our crowd began to arrive, a.ncl that helped matters somewhat.

The game and dance that followed seemed to pass quite speedily, clue to so much excitement, and it was not long before the time approached for our "bunch" to leave. On account of our tom out radiator and another "stalled" car, ten of us were doomed to stay overnight. Let me na.me you the lucky members; there was Jimmie Cheek, Louie Allsman, Ernest Garrison, Harold Laudeman, and myself in our car. , and Johnny and George McMillian, "Venus", "Fat" and "Sleepy" in the other. George, "Venus", Ernest and Harold stayed overnight at different homes, while Jimmie and Louie were to sleep with the "Prof". Now, not being used to it the boys did not feature the idea of sleeping with "Prof's", but did not know how to get out of it without hurting the old gentleman's feelings. Arriving at the hotel and finding t.hey were all to sleep in the same bed brought more cour­ age to the mind of one.

"Er-a-er-never mind, a-we don't want to put you to the bother," finally stam­ mered Jimmie.

"No bother at all, boys, no bother at all," answered the professor.

With this one uttered phrase Jimmie began to warm up, but Louie was still struggling to speak, first standing on one foot, then on the other, and finally clos­ ing his mouth with a gulp.

"N-No", Jimmie again ventured to say. "It's too much bother, we'll go back to the gang!"

With such arguing they finally won out. Now, as it happened the "Prof." had two quilts and two sheets on his bed, and the boys succeeded in"getting away" with the two quilts, leaving him with the two sheets, before returning to us. This left six of us; Jimmie, Louie, Johnny, "Fat", "Sleepy", and myself to sleep in the Ladies' Dressing Room of the dance hall. Louie and I, taking one quilt, a large piece of canvas we found, and an extra blanket we had, proceeded to make our bed, first feeling of the floor to see how hard it really was. "Sleepy" and Jimmie followed sujt with the other quilt and an old piece of canvas. This left "Fat" and Johnny with two cushions of the car and still another piece of old can­ vas, but why should Johnny worry with such a bed partner as "Fat"?

On account of not going to bed very early the rught before, I was tired and wanted to get to sleep before the floor got too hard. But no such luck with that bunch around. I had just become well under the influence of Somnus when some­ one piped: "Where's the Swede? Is he asleep?"

"Yeah!"

"Well, wake 'em up!"

With a hazy and faint recollection of things I awoke, but again I had just reached the same point when the same voice piped: "Where's the Swede? Is he asleep"?

"Yeah!"

"Well, wake 'em up!"

After this had happened three or four times I did not feel •like sleep, so we proceeded to raise the roof another notch. This had gone on for some little time when there suddenly arose from the far right a terrible sound, sounding like a saw mill. Now if there is anything that gets on my nerves it is listening to some one "sawing logs". I finally remarked to Louie, "I'll give that guy just three more chances, then its his neck," thinking it was Jimmie on my right who was making all the disturbance.

"A-Arkswee-ee," sounded the shriek.

We counted "one!" In something like half a minute out cnme another.

"A-Awrkswee-ee."

"That's two!"

Again, "A-Arkswee-ee."

That ended matters, and I jumped astraddle Jimmie's neck.

"Where do you guys get that stuff? JI he bellowed. "That ain't me, its 'Sleepy' next to me." At that we let the shriek prevail.

1Vter this we all seemed to want to go to sleep but couldn't on account of the saw mill. ,ve must have dozed off, tho, for the next thing I remember was ome­ one walking a,11 over my neck with the remarks, "Goodnight! Like to freeze to death! Somebody give me a match!"

From m�r neck he stepped in Louie's face, but with no results in the form of a match.

"Well then, gimme a nickel and I'll go across the street and buy some." It was then about three-thirty in the morning.

Finally after succeeding in fincling :i. match and striking it, we found the night prowler to be Johnny. With the match he lit the oil stove which he and "Fat JI took to bed with them. This ended all domestic trouble for awhile and we \\"ent to sleep agai.n.

About six-thirty we decided to get up, and it was a bard looking outfit that separated themselves from canvas, quilts, coats and oilstoves that morning. When Jinuuie was asked how he slept during the night his grammar wa extremely shock­ ing, but he gave us to understand that he had chased "Sleepy" all over the place during the night trying to keep up with the covers. Someone then hollered, "Jigger, here comes the 'Prof.' "! Right then we proceeded to hide his quill .

After that we were fortunate enough to find an old curry-comb, a horse brush and a barrel of water with a thin coating of ice over it-ample requisites for making preparations for our toilet! We all made a dive for the barrel, which became quite crowded with the six of us around it at once. We became more aware of this fact when "Sleepy" laughed, "Ha! Ha! That's one on you 'Fat'! That's my face you've been awashin!"

With our clothes looking as if they had never seen a cleaners or a pre: ing cs­ tablislunent we wa,lked the middle of the street to the hotel for breakfast.

Morning exercises are taken before breakfast, but in this case they were taken after, so with twelve or fourteen boys pushing we finally succeeded in starting Johnny's car, then we all piled in. With the car full we made a regular Fourth of July in Camp Verde by flying up and down Main Street with a wide open mufficr and plenty of "chin music".

About twelve-thirty, our car being finished to the tune of a good garage bill, we left town with a flourish.

So profit by our experience, my readers, and take no chances, always be pre­ pared with a good sized pocketbook and a bed whenever you leave for the "wilds".

Now Lhcre wa. a particular motorist who had wonderful visions every time the sign was i o·hLed by him. He was from the "East", and had heard a great deal concernino- "tamale ". He imagined a huge plate heaped with a delicious con­ coction from which came tantalizing and appetizing odors. o one evening he Look courage and also his Spanish vocabulary, which he immediaLcly forgoL a soon as the door of the little "choza" opened, and humbly a keel if he could gel omc Lamales.

The woman of lhe "choza" aid, "Weil, you will have to order them for next week. How many dozen do you wanL?" "Dozen! Do they come by the dozen?" He thot they must be like oysters, "Nfy, I could cat about Lwo dozen myself." Then aloud he replied, "I'll take four dozen."

That evening he s:ticl to his wife, "Dear, I've ordered some tamales for Friday, so you might a k a couple of the teachers to come in and help us eat them."

Friday evening arrived and so did the tamales,-a great tub of them! The little wife who had forgotten all about the tamales exclaimed in a shocked voice, "My <rooclnc ·, whaL in the world are those? And what are they all for?"

She called her husband and bade him come and see what he had clone and what he meant to do now.

"They are the tamale ! Diel you ask anyone to come and help us eat them?"

"Oh! Oh! You'll need the entire teaching force to make any impression on all of tho. e thing . " Then he tarted on hi pilgrimage to find the teachers, and fu1d them he did, but alas! much to his sorrow, nearly all had engagements.

But in . pite of the efforts of those few that came Mr. Hull was doomed to eat "tamales" the next day, and for many days to come.

The Mexican Christmas Tree

HE week preceding the Christn�as vacation was a very busy a.ncl inte�esting _ one for the members of the high school, as we were preparing a Christmas tree for the Mexican children of the Grammar School.

We had a "white elephant day" when every student brought some toy or other article which was useless to him. Many and various were t.he donations

that pomecl into our impromptu . "t.oy shop", where the hjgh school girls accomplish­ ed transformations to the broken and apparently useless toys. Dolls were supplied with necessary legs, arms and sometimes, even heads, while all were so brilliantly and strikingly attired as to prove beyond question that "fine feathers make a fine bird". The boys oft.he Manuel Training Class turned worthless scraps of wood into realistic battleships and all the gayly painted toys so clear to the little folk.' hearts.

On the Frida.y before Christmas a lofty tree found it way into the high school auclitorium where m:yriad willing hands transformed it into a thing of dazzling glory. Finally, the magic moment came, and two hundred little Mexican tots were marched in to behold their first Christmas tree. Here were gasps of surprise and litt,le cries of delight. Then hark! A sound of jingling bells, and a moment later Santa Claus, red and puffing, climbed down through the glowino- fire-place, his pack fairly creaking with toys, and goodies. There was uch a burst of joy from the little ones, uch a shining of faces, and such a clapping of tiny hands that most of us onlookers smiled at each other with eyes that were suspiciously wet.

After a Christmas Carol, and after all the little ones, carefully clutching an al­ ready beloved dolJ or boat or game under his arm had marched gayly out, the high school students let forth their pent up excitement in a wild "Three Rahs! for 'hrisL­ mas!"

The part, Miss Barker, was admirably taken by Thelma Pexton. Ruth Johnson was immediately recognized as Miss King by her late appearance per usual, and th<' expression: "Now, there's just this much about it!"

JCS Our Coach Our coach is pat1:enl, stem and true, And loyally he led us loo, And by his m.elhocls we have learned, To win our place; it must be earned.

The above lines are intended to give the qualities that are dominant in Mr. Getsinger, our coach. Although his career as a coach has been short, nevertheless this seeming handicap is more than counter-balanced by the military tactics he adopts. He believes in punctuality, fair play and bringing out t.he manly qualities of his men. He makes no discriminations whatever among his men; with him the best man takes the job.

He is stern, yes, in every sense of the word. Without this quality he could not have wielded t-he baton with such good results. It was through this sternness that he commanded obedience, fair play an . d good turn-outs for practice games.

If a fellow did not tum out for practice and could not give an eligible excuse, he was given his "walking papers".

Patience and perseverance are two other qualities that are dominant in our coach. These were brought out time and time again on the field of practice where he was ever offering encouragement and advice, such as "on your toes, men", "go from the jump", etc. With such a guidance there could be but one termina­ tion, Victory for the ORANGE AND GREEN".

Indoor Baseball

E had, at the beginning of the year, quite a number of boys who wen• not large enough to do much in foot-ball, so we decided to try our luck at indoor-baseball, which we played out-doors.

It was an entirely new game to all of us; but with the coaching of Mr. Getsing­ er we progressed very well and in a few weeks we were in shape to schedule some games. The first game we played was after school, with Jerome, and terminated much to our liking with the Cliff Dwellers journeying back up the hill with their spirits shattered.

The second game was also played on our grounds. This time the Jerome play­ ers came down with banners flying and fire in their eyes, and they sure did run up a nice little score against us.

This did not quite suit our team, to be defeated by the Jerome boys. The next week was spent in good hard practice, and when Jerome came clown for the third or championship game, the score was rolled very high in favor of the OR,UWE ,urn GREEN. Our outfield, which consisted of Joel, Jack and Paul, did exceptionally good work in our championship game. Jack :dcled a little excitement by knocking a home run, which was the only one knocked ail the games.

Our infield, which was made up of Albert, 1st. b.; Jose, 2nd.; Reginald, 3rd.; Ernest, r. hort; and Harold, I. short stop, proved to be air tight. Leo headed them all off clown behind the bat in perfect shape and Lewis kept up his good record in curving the "pill".

BASKET-BALL

Prescott High vs. Clark�ale On December the 10th the first team played and lost their first game of lhc season to Prescott High School; the game ending with a score of HJ-23. It wa,; a fast and exciting game, resembling football in many respects. The score was neck and· neck up to within two minutes before the final whistle. Then fate wavered and cast her lot with t.he "Badger;,". A close observer said of the . game , "You fellows can play rings around them when it comes down to real basket-ball, but of course you fellows didn't come over expecting to play foot-ball." AJthough we lost the game we learned a valuable lesson, and that i!i "prepared­ ness"! Hereafter when we play basketball, football or baseball we are going after om opponents from the jump.

Clarkdale vs. Jerome High School Thursday, December 18, 1919 the Clarkdale quintet of basket-ball player. and their coach, Mr. Getsinger, motored up to Jerome to engage the Cliff Dweller . in our second game of the season.

The game proved a very fast, hard contested battle with our men playing on the offensive most of the time; the "old pill" was down at our encl of the field more than at the other end, but try as our forwards would they seemed unable to shoot the goals, probably due to the tenacious guarding of the Cliff Dwellers, for they all turned guards when they saw the danger lurking near. Because of the small court and trying to hold on to the peak, the team found it difficult to get their b<>,.ll'ings. .· -::. · . .

With such disadvantages against our men there could be but one result to the game, the score ending in 26-13, in favor of the Jerome men, but they confessed that they didn't think they could do it again, this prophesy coming true later when they came clown to our own grounds.

Our line-up was: Lewis Allsman, center; Jim Cheek, left forward; Leonel Larson, right forward; Ernest Garrison, left guard; Joel Willard, right guard; Teel Miller, sub. guard and Jesse Bean sub. forward.

Clarkdale vs. Jerome High School

The old saying, "revenge is sweet" can certainly be applied to our second game with Jerome, for in this game we surely made up lost time for the other game, which we lost to the Cliff Dwellers on their comt .

In this encount.er we had our old fighting caps on and followed our coach's orders, "take them off their feet" which is really the only way to go at athletics and make a success of it.

Frnm the instant the ball was tossed up at center to the final whistle we simply played ring around them and had them running in circles. We made the first baskcL about thirty seconds after the game started, which seemed to have bewild­ ered them so that they were unable to gain their wits again during the whole melee, which ended in the grand score of 20-6 in favor of the "GREEN AND GOLD".

In this game the whole team starred, Lewis distinguishing himself by his .fast work on the field; Jim by his wonderful foot work and the way he eluded his guard and the wonderful dexterity with which he handled the "pill"; Garrison for his record breaking long shots from the center of the field which looked rather grand in mid-air; Lar on for his fine goal shooting; a.nd Willard distinguished himself by his close guarding which held his man to one basket.

No substitutes were played in any of our games, which is a remarkable thing within itself, but as a precaution Teel Miller and Jesse Bean were given the role as subs.

Second Tearn vs. Camp Verde

Friday, February 13, 1920.

Our second team, well accompanied with loyalists, motored clown to the valley town of Camp Verde and administered to its local quintet a defeat which made them sit up and take notice.

The final whistle found the score lďż˝-25 and our second teammates still going strong, notwithstanding the fact that the Camp Verde boys were good mixers and believed in "treating 'em rnugh ", a characteristic of the valley men. But this availed them naught when up against a more scientific adversary, for our cubs, by quick maneuvering, had them chasing rain!)ows from the jump. The line-up was: Russel Langdon, center; Harold Laudemann, right forward; Jesse Bean, left forward; Ted Miller, left guard; Chester Allen, right guard; Morris Bennett 8:!ld Albert Norris substitutes. After the game the Camp Verdeites showed their real western hospitality by royally entertaining their adversaries with an old time

dance, with hot, coffee and sandwiches thrown in for good measure. When every one had tripped th , e "fantastic toe" until there was no more energy left, the Camp Verde Professor gave a little informal address on the relations between the two schools, with the hopes that the two schools would become more closely related in the future.

S this book goes to press the "Great American Game" has hardly started its season. It has been twice delayed, once by the ball pa1¡k, which has grown so slowly out of the rocks and brnsh west of town, and again by the "measly" vacation. The outlook is bright however.

Jerome is clamoring for a game, and they will surely get it. Prescott is booked for two or three games. Any number of practice games with the town teams, the Indians, the Mexicans, etc. are waiting. With the new ball park and our choice of opponents a big time is in store for the team and school.

Of the old team only three remain, Lewis Allsman, this year's Captain and the famous Garrison-Swede battery. But a lot of recruits are out and a crack team is assured.

The elates of the games are not yet sure. One of the first will be with Jerome High. Prescott is expected to venture over the hill a little later. The return game with Prescott will come the latter part of May, if the roads will be kind to the autos. If Jerome survives the first encounter she will be welcome to come again. Practice games will be worked during the week.

It is safe to say that the Clarkdale colors will be as fully successful in baseball as they have always been in all things.

It is just now passin g through a period of readjustment to a higher plane of service and of compensation for that sen·ice.
